A Season to Celebrate Those We Love and Remember and Honor Those Lost

As we make our way through spring and into summer, we find ourselves celebrating those important people in our lives, and honoring those who sacrificed their lives for us.

Mother’s Day, always held the second Sunday in May, is May 14 this year, while Father’s Day is June 18, the third Sunday of June. These days are set aside for us all to take the time to truly reflect back on all our parents, or guardians, have done for us—and continue to do. Motherhood and fatherhood can feel like thankless callings at times, but know that your role is so important in your child’s life, and you are raising those who will lead others one day—whether families of their own, a business, a nonprofit. The sky’s the limit, and it starts at home.

On Monday, May 29, we honor and remember those who lost their lives serving our nation in order to keep this place we call home a land of the free. Our families, our communities, our nation, will forever be indebted to those

men and women who served selflessly for all of humanity.

Which is best for your next home update?

Dorothy said it best: “There’s no place like home.” And, while appearance certainly doesn’t make a house a home, it helps when you’re hoping to preserve and build equity in that home. The style, design and materials of a home should be taken into account when updating it. Whether doing a DIY fireplace restoration or resurfacing an exterior accent, it’s all about the finishes.

Natural stone, brick and various forms of concrete have been used as building materials for thousands of years. As a natural element, stone can lower your heart rate and elicit a sense of peace. The symmetrical lines of brickwork are both artistic and grounding. Concrete brings versatility and unique architectural elements while giving spaces a minimalist, urban-industrial vibe.

Materials like brick, stone and concrete are great options to add texture to a dated or dull area when updating your home’s aesthetic. Deciding which material is right for you depends on your home, project and budget. Here’s everything you need to know when choosing which option is best for your home.

Natural Stone

From the Egyptian pyramids to the Roman Colosseum and the Washington Monument, humans have used stone to build durable, elegant structures for centuries. As a building material, stone is fire resistant, long lasting,

and able to withstand nature’s elements. As a natural resource, stone connects us to the earth, while the unique beauty and various colors, shapes and sizes of each stone allow for artistic flexibility.

Including stone in your design can drastically upgrade the look and increase the value of your home. While images of quaint English stone cottages might come to mind, adding stone to a fireplace or as an exterior accent may be a more manageable approach—unless you have the urge to start knocking down walls. Brick

One of the most popular building materials in US history, even “The 3 Little Pigs” told us brick is a superior building material for homes. Made from combining clay and shale, bricks are extremely durable and resilient to fire and extreme weather conditions. Homes that include bricks provide a feeling of comfort and safety to those within, and the versatile colors and textures allow for unique and detailed architectural designs.

Using brick as a primary structural building material should be considered at the time of construction and completed by a professional brick mason. While bricks tend to be at a lower price point than natural stone, the cost is still quite high. Between the added steps in the brick production process, the heaviness and subsequent transportation difficulty, and the need for professional installation, including brick as

an accent is often a more feasible option. Like stone, a brick veneer is often used for aesthetics rather than structural support. Though not as durable as solid brick, brick veneer is better at keeping moisture away from the exterior wall and tends to last decades longer than traditional siding.

Using concrete as a building material is nothing new; in fact, Thomas Edison designed and built the first concrete homes in 1908. Heather Hanley is third generation in the Hanley family business, along with parents Jim and Sue Hanley. “I really like solving problems, and I think helping our customers solve the problem of furnishing their homes is like putting together a beautiful puzzle. We want to get them just the right piece to suit their needs, their budget and their lifestyle,” affirms Heather. “Delivering on just the right piece of furniture is really fulfilling. Helping people craft not only functional but beautiful environments to live in is a great service to provide.”

Now I bring our fourth generation to work with me every day—Helen Marie! She was born on December 1, 2022, and is named after my grandmother. She comes to work with me, so I get to work with my dad and my child. There are not many jobs where you get to do that, so that’s super special.”

Heather is grateful to be able to bring the families they serve together through furniture. “It’s not just a place to sit, or sleep, or dine, but somewhere they create memories that will last a lifetime,” she smiles.

Six swoon-worthy color palettes for your home

There’s something about the sun’s direction and intensity as we head into early summer that shines a spotlight on even the slightest hint of drabness. Pair that with the inspiration sparked by the prospect of summer, and you might find yourself staring at a wall of color swatches, considering paint colors.

Updating the paint colors in your home is a relatively quick way to make a huge impact on how your house looks and feels. A couple of coats of paint can hide that gloomy wall color from the 2020 COVID-19 lockdowns and turn your space into one that is warm and modern. Updating outdated or weathered exterior paint or adding a bold color to your front door can instantly increase your home’s curb appeal.

The transformation that fresh paint can make is undeniable, but choosing the right colors can be downright dreadful. To help ease that dread, we’ve talked to interior designers and paint color experts at Benjamin Moore and Sherwin Williams to bring you six color palettes that are sure to revive your home’s color vibe.

Modern Minimalist

Minimalist styles begin on a neutral foundation, but they’re not limited to shades of white. Natural hues found in wood and stone are a great place to start when considering minimalist colors for the interior or exterior of your home. A neutral base color, such as Benjamin Moore’s Gray Owl (2137-60) with White Dove (OC-17) trim, allows you to easily incorporate other pops of color. Add Hale Navy (HC -154) for the kitchen island or monochromatic office and Chelsea Gray (HC-168) for powder room cabinets or to coordinate with brick on your exterior.

Earthy and Grounded

When it comes to Earth tones, gone are the days of dull browns and brassy beiges. Shades like Benjamin Moore’s Baked Terracotta (#1202) in the dining room or on lower kitchen cabinets add color while exuding a feeling of warmth and groundedness. A neutral beige like Manchester Tan (HC-81) as a flow color ties in the terracotta with an emerald sage such as Peale Green (HC-121) in the office. Finish this palette with Sherwin Williams’ White Flour (SW7102) trim and an accent color, such as Warm Brownie (2101-30) for a cohesive wholehouse color palette.

Warm and Inviting

Traditional colors representing warmth are dark, saturated hues in the red, orange, gold or brown family, but the deepest shades of cool colors can be very comforting. Entryway walls painted with Benjamin Moore’s Yellowstone (HC-10) with Cotton Balls (OC-122) wainscoting invites people in. Adding America’s Heartland (#197) as a flow color extends the warmth from the entry and ties in Nightshade (2116-10) on the kitchen island. Racoon Hollow (#978) in the bathroom or office pulls the interior look together but is also a versatile exterior color option.

Vibrant and Lively

After several years of cool color trends, vibrant colors are making a big comeback. Benjamin Moore’s 2023 color of the year, Raspberry Blush (2008-30), is a bold statement color that energizes a room or front door. Include other rich colors like their Wenge (AF-180) for a moody bathroom or exterior accent color and North Sea Green (2053-30) in the formal dining room for a more balanced feeling. Coupling Stone Harbor (2111-50) for the flow walls or main exterior paint and White Heron (OC-57) for trim helps highlight the vibrant colors without making them seem overwhelming.

Hues of green can reduce anxiety, invite harmony and bring the serenity of nature indoors. A fresh green/blue/gray shade like Benjamin Moore’s Hollingsworth Green (HC-141) on lower kitchen cabinets radiates relaxation while adding a deep green like Sherwin Williams’ Billiard Green (SW 0016) in the office or powder room is reminiscent of a peaceful rainforest retreat. Warm white colors like Benjamin Moore’s Swiss Coffee (OC-45) on the walls and crisp white Chantilly Lace (OC-65) on the trim paired with soft charcoal Wrought Iron (212410) accents complement the interior green shades and highlight the colors of nature when used on the exterior.

Classic and Timeless

Finding a color palette that can transcend time and bringing in color with furniture, art or wallpaper is always in style. Sherwin Williams’ neutral greige shades like Agreeable Gray (SW 7029) for walls or cabinets and Pure White (SW 7005) on trim are versatile options that coordinate well with warm or cool tones. A monochrome design in Dovetail (SW 7018) for the dining or powder room adds elegance, while a chameleon hue, like Seasalt (SW 6204), adds depth by appearing to change color depending on the light. Finish this palette with Iron Ore (SW 7069) interior accents or as a dramatic exterior color.

The Family Tree

Celebrating, remembering and honoring children we’ve lost

There is a beautiful garden here in Sandpoint; a tranquil space for those who are facing difficult times, a place to honor and remember loved ones we’ve lost, and just a peaceful oasis to escape the busyness and stresses of life. “Our Healing Garden provides a place of quiet reflection, remembrance and solace for our entire community,” shares Tami Feyen of Bonner General Health Community Hospice.

The Healing Garden, which sits at roughly an acre on the grounds of Bonner General Hospital, was dedicated in 2004 and is completely maintained by community volunteers and funded through donations from the community, as well as through fundraising events such as their Garden Galas.

Within this garden, visitors will find the Children’s Remembrance Garden, which was dedicated in August of 2019. Here lives the “Family Tree, the vision of longtime Sandpoint resident Kristina Orton, whose son Patrick, a renowned photographer, passed away at the age of 25. She was looking for a way to help other parents, and our community, honor children lost.

“I had this vision. In Israel they have the Wailing Wall, and it occurred to me that there was nowhere for people to go to have their children recognized,” she recalls. “Not everyone can afford a gravesite, so it was important to me that these children be recognized in a place where parents can go and think about their children.”

Within this garden, visitors will find the Children’s Remembrance Garden, which was dedicated in August of 2019.

Kristina brought her vision to Lissa Defrietas (Bonner Community Hospice bereavement and volunteer coordinator), and Lissa began to coordinate with individuals to realize Kristina’s vision. It would be Hospice volunteer and welder/artist Betty Gardner who would ultimately answer the call.

Betsy had lost a brother in a work-related accident when he was 18, and his death devastated their mother, who was never able to move on from it. Betsy agreed to come up with a few designs—one being a metal tree about the size of a dormant fruit tree, with branches that could support copper heartshaped leaves engraved with the names and birthdates of children who had died. She called it the “Family Tree.”

“The first name I hung on the tree was Patrick for Kristina, and the second was David, for my brother,” says Betsy. “Every

time I hang new leaves, I read the names of each child to myself. I say a prayer that they are in a good place in their journey. I grieve for each person who has a loved one’s name there.

“I love the fact that there are so many little trinkets hung on the tree, most likely by the people who love and miss someone,” she adds. “The glass blue bird in the nest in the tree was a gift to me by my mother-in-law who has passed away. It symbolizes hope. The sculpture’s names make me understand that there are others who have had a similar loss as my family. We share both the loss and the love. It makes us feel less alone in our grief and connected.”

To honor those children who have left us all too soon, the first annual Celebration of Life gathering in the garden is planned for May 31 at 4pm. As Tami shares, this event will be

a gathering of community for anyone who wishes to attend; a time of celebration of lives who have touched us, a time of reflection and gathering together to remember.

“As humans, we experience love. It is the greatest gift of all. Because we love, we will also experience loss at some time. Having traditions, ways to honor that love and those individuals so important to us, is vital to healing and growth,” notes Tami.

As Kristina adds: “It must be comforting, in a strange way, for other parents to see how many other children have left and passed on, and we’re in this horrible club no one wants to be in, but comrades of those who understand the pain and grief, can recognize their children, form community and connection, and honor the child.”

Bonner General Health Community Hospice is the only nonprofit hospice serving Bonner and Boundary counties and has been serving our communities for more than 30 years. Their priority is our community, those persons they support with their Holistic in-home Hospice care and their loved ones. Hospice also provides bereavement support for our community, whether a person has been touched by BGH’s Hospice program directly, or not. It is Bonner General Health Community Hospice’s greatest honor to serve our community.

MINDY ROGET MATH | SANDPOINT HIGH SCHOOL

Mindy Roget, who currently teaches math at Sandpoint High School (SHS), has been working for the Lake Pend Oreille School District (LPOSD) since 2007.

She can understand and effectively engage with her students because she once walked in their very shoes, having graduated from SHS herself.

“Teaching at the high school that I attended is a blast,” Mindy describes. “I enjoy interacting with young adults and bringing my enthusiasm to as many as I can at SHS.”

Mindy is originally from Illinois, but her grandparents moved to the mountains of North Idaho when she was young, and shortly thereafter her parents decided to follow. Mindy’s family relocated to Sandpoint when she was 5 years old, and she started school in the LPOSD as a first-grader.

After graduating from SHS, Mindy attended University of Idaho before returning to Sandpoint to begin her teaching career. Since joining the staff of LPOSD 16 years ago, Mindy has taught at the elementary, middle and high school levels.

Regardless of what grade level she teaches, Mindy’s love for education has remained unwavering.

“I was inspired to become a teacher because I have always loved children and, to be honest, I’m just a big kid at heart,” Mindy jokes.

pleasure of raising their daughter, Cienna, who graduated from SHS in 2018, and son Stirling, who is a senior this year, in the same school district that Mindy teaches in.

“Being a teacher with children in the district has always been great,” Mindy explains. “I loved seeing what they were doing differently, and sometimes I would even borrow their work for examples in my own classroom.”

Mindy’s hard work and dedication to the LPOSD was rewarded in January when she was voted as Sandpoint Living Local’s 2022 Finest Teacher of the Year.

“My first reaction when I found out that I won this award was pure excitement,” Mindy recalls. “It means so much to me to be recognized because I feel like I love what I do, and all my hard work was being acknowledged by so many people!”

Outside of the classroom, Mindy loves to get outdoors and stay active, whether she is enjoying live music, hiking, biking, playing volleyball, boating, paddle-boarding or— most importantly—going to the beach.

“I love living in Sandpoint because everywhere I go I am surrounded by beauty and familiar faces,” Mindy adds.

“I enjoy interacting with youn g adults and bringing my enthusiasm to as many as I can.”

In her first three years at Sandpoint High School (SHS), Aliya has asserted herself as a bona fide star athlete, and she was recently selected as the 5A-4A Female Athlete of the Year for 2022-2023.

Aliya averaged 14.3 points, 4.6 steals and 4.7 rebounds per game this season, earning her the 4A Inland Empire League Player of the Year honors and a First-Team All-State selection; not to mention her First-Team All-League and Second-Team All-State nominations in soccer this past fall and her prowess as a talented sprinter and jumper on the track and field team.

With 1.7 seconds on the clock and her team clinging to a two-point lead, junior Aliya Strock stepped to the freethrow line and sank the two biggest shots of her career, putting the finishing touches on a 69-65 win over 4A favorite Shelley that gave the Sandpoint Bulldogs their first girls’ basketball state championship in school history.

“It still feels surreal that I was on a team that won state,” Aliya exclaimed. “It was great to

When Aliya began playing varsity sports two years ago, she struggled to have confidence in herself as an athlete. However, she has grown tremendously in this area over the past year, which has catalyzed her success.

“When I first started playing these high-level sports as a freshman, I was not at all confident in myself, nor my abilities,” Aliya explained. “My dad, Michael Strock, has pushed me to get out of that mental block, and this year I made a pact with myself, with the help of my mom, Kristin Strock, and my dad, that I would give 100 percent effort each time I’m on the court/ field/track.”

Aliya hopes that her hard work and dedication as a student athlete will eventually earn her a scholarship to play sports in college somewhere in the Pacific Northwest. She also aspires to go to school to become a physical therapist or trainer.

When not participating in sports, Aliya loves to get outdoors and enjoy all four seasons in Sandpoint, whether that looks like snowboarding in the winter, hiking in the fall or swimming in the summertime. She looks forward to one more year of high school and hopes to soak in as many memories as possible at SHS.

“I just want to say that I love this town, this community, and all the people who have been there for me, and I can’t wait for next year,” Aliya excitedly added.

Bonners Ferry Wrestling Club twice a week and competing in freestyle and Greco wrestling tournaments.

Ashlei said that he appreciates the relationships that sports have afforded him, and he loves challenging himself to improve.

“I really enjoy competing,” Ashley noted. “That’s what I love so much about wrestling— the grinding, the close matches [and] all that. Definitely my favorite part of sports is the competition and the people.”

When he is not playing sports or training, Ashlei loves to get outside and take in the beauty of Lake Pend Oreille and the surrounding mountains. Some of his favorite hobbies include swimming, backpacking, hunting, fishing, and riding horses.

Ashlei Hawkins Sophomore

After earning a spot in the 4A State Wrestling Tournament as a freshman last year, Sandpoint High School’s Ashlei Hawkins entered his sophomore season with high expectations for himself.

To his surprise, Ashlei struggled out of the gates, winning only one match, and failing to place at the Bulldogs’ season-opening tournament in early December.

Yet Ashlei did not let this initial setback deter him, and his determination throughout the season allowed him to not only make it back to the state tournament but also place this time around, as he finished sixth in the 126-pound weight class.

“As the season progressed, I started doing better and better, and I made it to state and I worked hard,” Ashlei recalled.

In addition to his success on the wrestling mat, Ashlei has also shown his potential on the football field, earning varsity reps at running back this past fall.

As far as his plans after high school, Ashlei thinks that he would like to attend college to study engineering and potentially play sports as well. His future aspirations range from either joining the Army as an officer or even utilizing his wrestling skills to try his hand at competing in mixed martial arts.

As he reflects on this past year, Ashlei admits that he was slightly disappointed with his sixth-place finish at the state wrestling tournament in February. He made it to the semifinal match undefeated before three straight losses dropped him to the final spot on the podium.

Despite this feeling, Ashlei explained that his sophomore season was a success overall, and he noted that the memories he made and lessons he learned will help him come back even stronger next year.

“Competing at state is amazing,” Ashlei described. “The Ford [Idaho] Center is awesome. There are thousands of people there, [and] when you make the semifinals, it is you and the other guy, and everybody is watching because it’s important and it [decides] who is going to go to the finals.”

He concludes, “It is something I will never forget.”

According to a recent study conducted by Our World Data, more than 750 million people still do not have access to electricity today, and 3 billion—or 40 percent of the world’s population—have no access to clean fuels for cooking.

Another strategic partnership that MAD sees as a primary fixture in achieving its goals moving forward is with ADACEN, whose CEO, Lt. General Jon M. Davis, is the chair of MAD’s Strategic Advisory Board.

ADACEN has an exclusive contract with MAD, making MAD Energy the organization’s sole Power Integrator as it begins to roll out a global web of next-generation data center infrastructure.

A third, and possibly the most intriguing, project that MAD is currently working toward is developing a new technology designed to allow for wireless energy transmission based on the ideas of Nikola Tesla.

“MAD Energy is going to be the company that commercializes modern-day Nikola Tesla wireless energy transmission towers,” Christian said. “And we are going to be able to bring safe energy and data transmission to the world.”

Ultimately, in everything MAD does, the organization’s primary goal is to put the power back into the hands of the people. One primary way MAD accomplishes this goal is by funding itself entirely through retail and accredited investors.

“Not only is MAD funded by the people—because we wanted to bring the people in to [reap] the reward that comes from this [instead of] big oil companies or Wall Street,” Christian said, “but we also plan to allow for investments into our subsidiary companies as well, by both retail and accredited investors.”

As MAD continues expanding and furthering its global clean energy projects, the organization hopes to encourage prosperity in North Idaho, North Africa and everywhere in between.

“Something very special is being done here [at MAD],” Christian noted. “And it is the coolest thing ever, to me, that it’s headquartered in Sandpoint, Idaho, because I look forward to seeing some of those external benefits supporting this area because of the success of this company.”

The 1950s are decades in the past, but one weekend each spring, downtown Sandpoint turns back the clock to simpler times of sock hops and saddle shoes, ice cream shops and rock-n-roll. That’s right! It’s that time again for Lost in the ‘50s.

Started by Carolyn Gleason back in 1986, Lost in the ‘50s is a celebration of music, cars and community; the event the response to Carolyn’s love of music and desire to bring the great artists of that era to Sandpoint before it was too late. And what goes better with great music from the 1950s than those classic cars and hot rods from the era?

“This is the most impressive and exciting event that not only draws huge amounts of outside attraction to Sandpoint but also literally opens the gates of summertime enthusiasm in the downtown Sandpoint corridor for all businesses,” share Corey Obenauer, owner of Burl Wood Dreams and member of the Downtown Sandpoint Shopping District. “And at the heart of this event, Carolyn Gleason of Second Avenue Pizza. Caleb Worley hasn’t always been in the business of remodeling and building custom homes. His career started out in law, studying for nearly four years and working in business litigation for three. “I remember this not being my dream job but merely pursuing knowing it is a rewarding career,” he recalls.

Remember, your location also includes the lot on which the home stands. You can remodel and renovate a house to your every specification, but the lot will remain the same. Consider the lot location and size carefully when viewing homes. Does it get enough sunlight? Will the driveway be difficult to navigate when it snows? Is the yard large enough for your kids and dog to run around? Are you prepared for the amount of maintenance needed for this size yard? If anything about the location or the lot seems concerning or feels like a compromise to you, don’t hesitate to walk away. It will be easier to find another property in a better location or lot than to live with frustrations that could’ve been avoided.

Know your budget and the market. While this sounds simple enough, it can be a complex process. You need a clear picture of your finances to determine a down payment amount and the maximum mortgage payment you can afford. Your real estate team can help review various mortgage payment scenarios and point out sleeper costs, including HOA dues, homeowner’s insurance, and property taxes. “Home buyers need to have all their documents in order

What goes into a retirement ‘paycheck’?

During your working years, you generally know how much money you’re bringing in, so you can budget accordingly. But once you’re retired, it’s a different story. However, with some diligence, you can put together a “paycheck” that can help you meet your income needs.

Where will this paycheck come from? Social Security benefits should replace about 40 percent of one’s pre-retirement earnings, according to the Social Security Administration, but this figure varies widely based on an individual’s circumstances. Typically, the higher your income before you retire, the lower the percentage will be replaced by Social Security. Private pensions have become much rarer in recent decades, though you might receive one if you worked for a government agency or a large company. But in any case, to fill out your retirement paycheck, you may need to draw heavily on your investment portfolio.

Your portfolio can provide you with income in these ways:

• Dividends - When you were working, and you didn’t have to depend on your portfolio for income to the extent you will when you’re retired, you may have reinvested the dividends you received from stocks and stock-based mutual funds, increasing the number of shares you own in these investments. And that was a good move, because increased share ownership is a great way to help build wealth. But once you’re retired, you may need to start accepting the dividends to boost your cash flow.

• Interest payments - The interest payments from bonds and other fixed-income investments, such as certificates of deposit

(CDs), can also add to your retirement income. In the years immediately preceding their retirement, some investors increase the presence of these interest-paying investments in their portfolio. (But even during retirement, you’ll need some growth potential in your investments to help keep you ahead of inflation.)

• Proceeds from selling investmentsWhile you will likely need to begin selling investments once you’re retired, you’ll need to be careful not to liquidate your portfolio too quickly. How much can you sell each year? The answer depends on several factors—your age, the size of your portfolio, the amount of income you receive from other sources, your spouse’s income, your retirement lifestyle, and so on. A financial professional can help you determine the amount and type of investment sales that are appropriate for your needs while considering the needs of your portfolio over your lifetime.

When tapping into your investments as part of your retirement paycheck, you’ll also want to pay special attention to the amount of cash in your portfolio. It’s a good idea to have enough cash available to cover a year’s worth of your living expenses, even after accounting for other sources of income, such as Social Security or pensions. In addition, you may want to set aside sufficient cash for emergencies. Not only will these cash cushions help you with the cost of living and unexpected costs, but they might also enable you to avoid digging deeper into your long-term investments than you might like.

Second, only to the brain, the eyes are the most complex, powerful organ in the human body. Our vision is responsible for about 80 percent of what our brain processes, making proper eye care a vital component of our overall health. Ophthalmologist Dr. Mark Torres shares the importance of proper eye exams and when you may need an eye specialist.

Do ophthalmology and optometry work together?

Absolutely. In many instances, optometrists are the first line in identifying patients needing ophthalmic care. In a rural setting such as North Idaho, those specialists are experienced in identifying and managing eye conditions. In addition, they are experts at prescribing and fitting glasses and contact lenses. For a patient needing advanced care from an ophthalmologist, optometrists can easily and efficiently make the referral for a patient. Sandpoint is fortunate to have several highly skilled and talented optometrists.

What about kids and teenagers?

I firmly believe that children should get a comprehensive eye exam as early as feasible, especially as they reach preschool, kindergarten, and elementary school. Adolescents should also have an eye exam before participating in physical activities, sports and hobbies. Clear vision is an important factor in academic performance, physical activity and sports performance, and activities such as artwork, graphics and computers. If a child is struggling in any of these areas at an early age, parents should consider obtaining a good, comprehensive eye exam for their child.

The same goes for teenagers and young adults. The eyes can change quite a bit during the growth years, and clear vision is just as crucial for this age group. The same performance considerations apply to

this age group—school, sports, hobbies and social interactions. Once again, start with optometry. The solution may be as simple as a quality pair of glasses or contact lenses. This can go a long way to alleviating stress and concerns for parents, children, teenagers and young adults.

Does ophthalmology focus primarily on eye surgery?

Not really. Only about a third of our patients are eye surgery patients. Most patients come to us to identify and manage other eye-related conditions that don’t necessarily require eye surgery, such as glaucoma and macular degeneration, and many others. Furthermore, if patients need more specialized eye care, we can assist by facilitating and streamlining the process of finding an ophthalmology sub-specialist. This could be a pediatric ophthalmologist, a glaucoma specialist, or a retina specialist.

Does ophthalmology interact with other medical specialties?

That actually happens daily. The eyes are an organ system connected to the rest of the human body. They can be affected by such things as diabetes, hypertension, heart disease, vascular disease, neurologic conditions, autoimmune diseases, and cancer. We have patients shared between our clinic and other medical specialists regularly and frequently, such as Internal Medicine, Family Practice, Neurology, Rheumatology, Oncology, and many others.

With laser hair removal you can ditch your razor and have smooth, hair-free skin year-round! Below we break down commonly asked questions.

How does laser hair removal work? During the laser treatment, a diode laser beam passes through the skin toward the hair follicles. The penetrating energy then heats up the root of the hair, which in turn prevents future hair growth.

Which areas of the body can be treated? LHR is safe on most areas of the body that have unwanted hair. Most commonly treated areas include the bikini, underarms, legs, arms, chest, back, shoulders, stomach, neck, chin and sideburns.

How much does laser hair removal cost? Pricing varies based on your region. LHR is generally sold in a package of treatments and averages $1,200 for smaller areas like the face or underarms, up to $2,200 for larger areas like the legs.

How many sessions are required? Hair is reduced with each treatment, and results are observed after four to six sessions. The number of sessions will differ depending on your hair color, hair type, body area and skin tone, but on average is six to eight sessions.

Why do I need multiple treatments to achieve hair removal? Laser hair removal works best when hair follicles are in their mature stage; however, at any given time, your hair is in various stages of growth. Multiple treatments allow for each individual follicle to be treated during their mature stage.

Does laser hair removal hurt? Most LHR machines have a built-in skin-cooling surface. This makes treatment more comfortable and virtually painless. Additionally, the treatment is quick and over before you know it.

What is the benefit of laser hair removal? Unlike traditional methods (waxing, shaving, bleaching, or using depilatory creams), LHR impacts the root of the problem, rather than offering a temporary solution. Traditional methods will require treatment forever, while LHR only requires a few sessions. Most patients immediately notice a significant reduction in hair growth and eventually smooth and hairfree skin.

Sushi at Home!

• Rinse the sushi rice in cold water until the water runs clear. Drain the rice and add it to a pot with 2 cups of water. Bring to a boil, then reduce the heat to low and cover the pot. Cook for 18 to 20 minutes, or until the rice is tender and the water has been absorbed.

• While the rice is cooking, make the sushi vinegar by mixing together the rice vinegar, sugar

• Once the rice is cooked, transfer it to a large bowl and add the sushi vinegar. Use a wooden spoon or rice paddle to gently fold the vinegar into the rice until it’s well combined. Let the rice cool to room temperature.

• Place a sheet of nori seaweed on a bamboo sushi mat or a piece of plastic wrap. Wet your hands with cold water and grab a handful of rice. Spread the rice evenly over the nori, leaving a 1-inch border at the top edge.

• Add a few strips of fish, cucumber and avocado to the center of the rice. Use the bamboo mat or plastic wrap to roll the sushi tightly, tucking in the filling as you go. Press the sushi roll gently to make sure it’s compact and the filling is snugly packed.

• Repeat the process with the remaining ingredients, making three more sushi rolls.

• Use a sharp knife to slice each sushi roll into eight pieces. Serve the sushi with soy sauce, pickled ginger and wasabi on the side.

A glimpse into the annual CHAFE 150 charity event

The scenic and sensational cycle ride of the summer, Sandpoint’s 16th annual CHAFE 150 Gran Fondo is nearly upon us! Witness this wondrous event on Saturday, June 17, as a spirited supporter or a pedaling participant. Organized by the Sandpoint Rotary, the CHAFE 150 is regarded as “One of the top charity rides in the U.S.” This year’s proceeds will be donated to Lake Pend Oreille School District’s (LPOSD) “Book Trust” program, whose mission is “to help elementary school children with little/no access to books fall in love with reading and become lifelong learners.”

A Gran Fondo, Italian for “Big Ride,” is a long-distance bike ride that challenges each rider to battle their own individual clocks rather than race against other cyclists. The Sandpoint CHAFE 150 offers a variety of distanced routes: 150, 80, 40, 25 and this year’s brand new 55-mile gravel route, all of which are majestic, joyous journeys. The 150-mile route is what separates this event from others and draws in repeat riders from all over the country as they attempt to beat their previous times. The 150-mile ride is a lavish loop around the Cabinet Mountains of Idaho and Montana, traversing through a gorgeous lake and riverriddled route.

This glorious undertaking is overseen by a dedicated year-round committee and made possible by over 80 sponsors and 150 volunteers. The day starts with a beautiful breakfast hosted at the beachfront Trinity restaurant after registering at City Beach. For those partaking in the 80- and 150-mile routes, a shuttle bus provided by LPOSD will transport you to the ride’s starting line, the rest of which will start at Sandpoint City Beach. A bike shuttle service will also be provided by Litehouse, and SAG (Support And Gear) services will be offered by Greasy Fingers. There will be a multitude of hydration stations manned by dedicated volunteers and first aid supplied by Bonner General Health. “The rest stops are some of the best of any ride you’ll find,” boasts Mel Dick, CHAFE 150’s organizer.

Circle the date, throw on some bike shorts and invite the family out this summer to participate in this year’s CHAFE 150. “We expect between 350 and 500 riders this year,” Mel states. Come challenge yourself on two wheels while taking in the lovely land of Sandpoint and aiding local students with the gift of literacy.

It’s officially farmers market season, as the Farmers Market at Sandpoint kicked off on April 29 at Farmin Park and will continue bi-weekly through October 14. With the mission to support local agriculture through education and a diverse community market, the community is invited to shop the market 3 to 5:30pm every Wednesday and 9am to 1pm each Saturday. Shop local while wandering booths of produce, specialty foods, crafts and goods from a variety of vendors throughout the area, and take in the free concert in the park (each Saturday and most Wednesdays).
