Gary Williams Brought Happiness & Hope to People of Nicaragua IN LIFE AND IN DEATH, GARY WILLIAMS MADE A DIFFERENCE Article by Patty Hutchens
A
sk anyone who knew Gary Williams and they will tell you he made a difference in the lives of many. Gary lost his battle with cancer and passed away in September of 2011 at the age of 56. His close friend Dale Jeffres fondly recalls the adventures the two shared, Three years ago Dale and his wife Vicki joined Gary and his teenage daughter Brooke on a mission trip to Nicaragua with the group Forward Edge International. While in Nicaragua, the group not only shared the word of Jesus Christ, but also worked on various building projects and also offered an eye glass ministry. In the afternoons some of the group would take time to spend with the young people in an orphanage. It was there that Dale said Gary connected with the young boys and teenagers. “It was pretty incredible to watch,” said Dale. “He had a lot of merit with the kids and they really trusted him.” A former professional baseball player who was drafted out of high school by the Kansas City Royals, Gary shared his passion for the game with the boys. The baseball field is right outside the orphanage and Dale said he enjoyed watching the kids play. “Every once in awhile the game would have to stop to get the cattle off the field,” chuckled Dale. Sadly, even in a poverty stricken country like Nicaragua, the laws dictate that one cannot attend school or even play competitive baseball without a uniform. When Gary learned that the young baseball players did not have the uniforms necessary to compete, he took it upon himself to do what he could to provide them. He returned to Sandpoint and spoke to Chris Young, the head coach of the Sandpoint High School varsity baseball team. Gary was in luck. Chris was holding a fundraiser to replace
the high school uniforms and told Gary he could have the old uniforms for the high school aged kids in Nicaragua. “They are baseball fanatics there (in Nicaragua),” said Gary’s wife Karen. who adds that many of the children told her they did not know Jesus until they met Gary – just one of the many blessings he brought to the children and young adults in the town of Puerto Cabezas. With the younger team now outfitted with Sandpoint High School uniforms, Gary wanted to do what he could to get uniforms for the other young men. It was a goal he was unable to achieve before he died. When he passed away it seemed only natural that Karen and Brooke should do what they could to carry on his mission, so in lieu of flowers, the mother and daughter requested that donations be made towards the purchase of baseball uniforms. In what Karen and Dale both refer to as a community wide effort, the final wish of Gary became a reality. With the help of Centerfield Sports, which was previously in Bonner Mall but now operates an online business, and Nancy Meyer at Meyer’s SporTees, they were able to purchase full uniforms at a reduced cost. They had everything from professional baseball caps to cleats. Earlier this year, Karen and Brooke went to Nicaragua to present the uniforms to the team. “It was through his passing that he was able to fulfill his dream,” said Karen. And not only was it his dream but the dream of many children in a country far away. Dale said that Gary’s love and passion for both baseball and the children and young adults of Nicaragua is something that touched many lives. “He had a vision and got people involved to help get these uniforms,” said Dale, adding that it meant so much more than just baseball and uniforms. “Some of these young men could have gone a different direction in life, but Gary had a real effect on them. He is sorely missed.”

Late Season Pike & Muskie Fishing Article by Dan Howard
Some of the best pike and muskie fishing of the year is upon us. Fall is an excellent time to fish for them. The water has begun to cool due to the night temperatures and shorter days. The big fish that have been in the deeper water all summer begin to move up into the shallows to prepare for winter. Almost everyone is hunting or have turned their attention to other activities and so the fish are a little less pressured and wary. The weather can be a bit of a problem sometimes, but if you plan accordingly and are prepared for chilly weather your chances for a memorable trip are pretty good. I try to pick favorable weather days without rain and/or high winds. If I am cold, wet and miserable what is the point of going? Several years ago, I learned that leaving a little later in the morning in the fall makes the trip a lot more enjoyable for me. I like to give the day some time to warm the air before I get on the water. Water clarity is the biggest problem faced when fishing in the fall. The rivers feeding the lakes are generally at their lowest flows of the year so there is little debris or silt to discolor the water. With the exception of the fall turnover, there is really nothing to move the water around. The result is very clear water. Clear water means that the fish will be able to see your bait from a great distance and scrutinize your bait as it moves through the water. The best way to deal with this is to speed up the retrieve so they have little time to look over your offering. This will force the fish to make a quick decision and hopefully they will choose to bite.

When pike and muskie fishing, speeding up your retrieve means REALLY PICKING UP THE PACE! Typically, a good trolling speed for trout and kookanee is 2-3 mph. When trolling for pike and muskie the speed needs to be at least doubled to 4-6 mph especially in clear water. Don’t worry about going too fast. If the rod is still manageable in the rod holder the speed is fine. Most modern outboard motors will troll for pike and muskie without a small “kicker” outboard. A modern 35 to 250 HP outboard will troll a pike or muskie bait just fine. I mention trolling, because it is a very effective method for fishing this time of year. I will often troll when the weather has turned windy or colder and/or I do not feel like casting any more. It is also a great method for searching and covering a lot of water quickly. I very seldom see anyone trolling big baits for pike and muskie. Don’t dismiss this method. Troll along the deep side of weed beds using the standard “S” curve trolling method. Trolling in a straight line does not vary the speed and generally does not produce bites. When navigating around points, it is very important to continue trolling out into the main body of the lake as you pass the tip of the point and double back in a loop to meet the point again, now paralleling the other side of the point. Points are very productive structure items and this method allows you to cover them much better than simply following the contour. Bait selection is difficult to pin down. Sometimes they are finicky and other times they are not. On a normal day, it is not uncommon to fish 6 to 8 hours and turn 4 to 6 fish in that time. I say turn, because at least half of the fish you see (or turn) will follow your bait but will not bite or if they do bite, they will miss the bait altogether or you will pull it out of their mouth in the midst of all the excitement. I would suggest using baits that are larger and that you are comfortable fishing with. Your confidence with the bait is more than half of the game. The best advice I can give you is to NEVER slow your bait down when a fish is following it. SPEED IT UP. If you can’t speed it up because you have run out of line, you must begin a figure 8 with your pole immediately or loose your opportunity. I can’t emphasize this enough. Big pike and muskie like deep water next to weed beds. They like weeds that are leafy and are often found in deep water as they often never reach the surface. Be sure to have fun...you may even catch a trophy!

anking has never been easier; you’re now able to check balances and transfer money directly from a computer, or even a smartphone. For instance, if your computer or programs are infected, you could be led to a fake website posing as a legitimate site, but it hijacks your passwords and account numbers without you knowing. Or they can install a program that records the information you enter on your bank’s website. More than 5,000 new malicious websites turn up every day, some of which are cleverly designed to mimic legitimate financial services websites. In fact, over a three-month period in 2012, Kaspersky Lab experts found more than 23,000 new malicious programs created to spy on your money. Studies show that 60 percent of all consumers shop and bank online, and one-third of those online shoppers store their banking details on their computers, so the risk of their financial data being intercepted has never been higher. In addition to using software such as Kaspersky Internet Security, follow these steps to ensure you are the only person with access to your banking information: • Always decline automatic log-in for online banking sites. It’s also important to never save the password for your bank on your browser. • Always remember to log out and close your browser window on your smartphone or laptop when finished with your online session. • If you receive an email from your bank asking for your account information, do not follow the link in the email. HEALTHY LIVING
UPWARD Basketball and Cheer Continues to Grow in Sandpoint EMPHASIZING HEALTHY COMPETITION, SPORTSMANSHIP AND SKILL BUILDING
I
n a time where families are pulled in a million different directions, Upward Basketball and Cheerleading is bringing families and the community together. Upward Sports, the world’s largest Christian sports league for children, attracts more than 550,000 kids each year with its unique approach—teaching skills for the sports arena and values for life. On any given Saturday in January and February it’s hard to go anywhere and not spot boys and girls in the brightly colored Upward uniforms. For the last five years Upward has provided a firstclass sports experience that emphasizes healthy competition, sportsmanship, skills building and fun while seeking to build spirituality, character and self-esteem. To avoid player and parent burnout, Upward Sports Leagues limit the time commitment to one practice and one game per week. Upward attributes its growing popularity to a combination of factors: • Unique substitution system designed to provide every child equal playing time, competing against an equally matched opponent. • Competitive games with strict adherence to a proprietary drafting system that balances talent on each team. • Supportive coaches that bring out “the winner” in every child regardless of the game’s score.
hitening for Life...
24 Hour Access & No Registration Fees !
The league accommodates players and cheerleaders from 1st – 8th grade. Upward will never turn a child away due to cost, last year over $3000 in scholarships were awarded to families who needed some financial help. The gymnasiums draw a full house of spectators on game days and the excitement is contagious with players announced by name as they run through the “tunnel”, high energy music, announcers calling the games and fun half-time activities that draw the parents in for participation. After the first game of last season one family commented, “We just moved here from the east coast and honestly I’ve never seen anything like this. From the music to the coaches, the quality officials and the cheerleaders…it’s REAL basketball. I am impressed with the encouraging environment you’ve managed to create with this program.” While Upward will continue to be committed to teaching great skills, what will remain a larger focus is the commitment to shaping great kids. There is still time to register your child for this season. For more information you may contact the League Directors, Hillary DeCecchis or Kim Brackett at 208.263.4818.

refreshing swim can help lower blood pressure and cholesterol. These are vascular health bonuses for people who are at risk for stroke, the leading cause of disability and the fourth leading cause of death in the United States. In 2010, 137,000 Americans died of stroke, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC). “Swimming is a vascular health bonanza,” said David H. Stone, MD, and a member of the Society for Vascular Surgery. “Low-impact swimming provides a total cardiovascular workout. Regular exercise strengthens the heart muscle, resulting in less effort and a decrease in blood pressure.” One in every three Americans over 20 years old -- 74 million Americans -- has high blood pressure according to 2010 statistics from the CDC. One in every six American adults has high cholesterol (more than 250 mg/d L). More American women than men have high cholesterol. To reduce high cholesterol levels, exercise and diet are important factors. The American Council on Exercise suggests that adults burn 2000 calories a week from exercise. The lack of regular physical activity results in 250,000 deaths annually, according to a 2003 report in the journal Circulation. As long as the exercise regimen continues, the health benefits remain.

In a 2010 University of Western Australia study, 100 women swimmers, ages 50 to 70, lowered their bad cholesterol and lost more inches in the waist and hips than walkers. Likewise, swimming is easy on the joints and doesn’t result in overheating. There are non-invasive screening tests that can detect vascular disease. Medication can treat vascular disease. FESTIVAL OF TREES
Kinderhaven Hosts its 13th Annual Festival of Trees A FAMILY TRADITION Article by Patty Hutchens
I
t all started in 2000 when Rokstad Ford-Mercury in Ponderay opened its doors to host the first Kinderhaven Festival of Trees. The staff and Board of Directors of this area’s only privately owned emergency shelter and group home for abused and neglected children were thrilled with the money raised from the event – $6463.00 Since those early years, Kinderhaven’s Festival of Trees has grown in popularity and has become an annual tradition for many. The event, which includes a luncheon and family night, culminates with the Saturday evening gala. It is the only major fundraiser each year for the home which houses up to 16 children. People are often moved by the outpouring of generosity at the Festival. It is not uncommon for someone to bid on a tree for upward of $2000 only to donate it back to be auctioned off again; all to benefit the children in need in the community. There are beautifully decorated trees, wreaths, gift baskets and other live-auction items which are crafted and donated by area residents, organizations and businesses. One of the highlights at the gala each year is when a young adult who lived at Kinderhaven as a child and benefitted from their services, speaks to the guests about how the experience has changed his or her life, often leaving very few dry eyes in the room. There are countless stories and each is one of heartbreak and hope. For instance there is the story of a young teenage girl who lived at Kinderhaven for nearly a year. During her time at
the home she went from lying and stealing to being able to trust the adults who were in her life. She came to call Kinderhaven her home and the other children her siblings. Most importantly, she learned that although her actions would result in natural consequences, no matter what her behavior, she was still accepted and loved. Over time her grades improved, she become considerate and kind, supporting those around her by doing small favors and doing what she could to cheer them up on a bad day. There are others who come with anger issues but soon learn to control their outbursts and have appropriate responses to their feelings. They respond to the love and hugs and begin to feel secure – often for the first time in their life. “We see these changes because we are so focused on creating the relationships with the children,” said Executive Director Phyllis Horvath. “Every staff member has an individual, nurturing relationship with each child. Because of the level of interactions, the children feel loved, accepted, and safe. That’s when they begin to change.” While the Festival of Trees brings in a significant amount of money, staff and board members stress that the costs of running a home 24 hours per day 7 days a week for so many children can be very costly. The home’s annual budget averages $240,000 per year. “This can go up or down depending on the number of children,” said Horvath. The largest expenditures include utilities, liability and worker’s compensation insurance, mortgage, maintenance and payroll.

FESTIVAL OF TREES
“If we have more than 8 children living here at a time we must have at least two staff members working,” said Horvath.
On Friday, November 30th the holiday luncheon will take place. The luncheon begins at 11am when guests are directed to the third floor of the Events Center where a silent auction is held in the auditorium. Lunch then takes place in the first floor area among the aroma of the beautifully decorated Christmas trees. This is where lunch is served and a live auction takes place.
Co-founded by Sandpoint’s current mayor, Marsha Ogilvie, in 1996 the home has seen nearly1500 children pass through its doors, most of them a success story making the transition from being neglected, abused and scared children to children with a high self esteem who feel loved, safe and secure. The Festival of Trees is an amazing display of the collaboration of many in the community who donate their time and talents to help those children who need it so desperately. This year the festivities will begin on Thursday, November 29th at the Sandpoint Events Center on the corner of Euclid and Pine. Opening night is always a special night for children and adults to enjoy the trees, visit with Santa and enjoy refreshments. Family Night runs from 4:00 to 6:30 p.m. and is free to all attendees.
The festivities culminate on December 1st with the Progressive Gala event. The doors open at 5:30pm and guests are invited to the third floor auditorium for a silent auction, hors d’oeuvres and no host bar. Once the silent auction is over, dinner, catered by Ivano’s Ristorante, will be served and a live auction of trees, wreaths and special gifts will take place. Tickets for the luncheon and gala are available starting on November 1st by contacting Jacinda Bokowy at 208.610.2208 or email her at jbokowy@mac.com. Tickets for the luncheon are $35 and $75 for the gala.

Cowboy in Heaven An old cowboy was riding his trusty horse followed by his faithful dog along an unfamiliar road. The cowboy was enjoying the new scenery, when he suddenly remembered dying, and realized the dog beside him had been dead for years, as had his horse. Confused, he wondered what was happening, and where the trail was leading them. After a while, they came to a high, white stone wall that looked like fine marble. At the top of a long hill, it was broken by a tall arch topped by a golden letter “H” that glowed in the sunlight. Standing before it, he saw a magnificent gate in the arch that looked like mother-of-pearl, and the street that led to the gate looked like gold. He rode toward the gate, and as he got closer, he saw a man at a desk to one side. Parched and tired out by his journey, he called out, ‘Excuse me, where are we?’ ‘This is Heaven, sir,’ the man answered. ‘Wow! Would you happen to have some water?’ the man asked. ‘Of course, sir. Come right in, and I’ll have some ice water brought right up.’ As the gate began to open, the cowboy asked, ‘Can I bring my partners, too?’ ‘I’m sorry, sir, but we don’t accept pets.’ The cowboy thought for a moment, then turned back to the road and continued riding, his dog trotting by his side. After another long ride, at the top of another hill, he came to a dirt road leading through a ranch gate that looked as if it had never been closed. As he approached the gate, he saw a man inside, leaning against a tree and reading a book. ‘Excuse me,’ he called to the man. ‘Do you have any water?’ ‘Sure, there’s a pump right over there. Help yourself.’ ‘How about my friends here?’ the traveler gestured to the dog and his horse. ‘Of course! They look thirsty, too,’ said the man. The trio went through the gate, and sure enough, there was an old-fashioned hand pump with buckets beside it. The traveler filled a cup and the buckets with wonderfully cool water and took a long drink, as did his horse and do. When they were full, he walked back to the man who was still standing by the tree. ‘What do you call this place?’ the traveler asked. ‘This is Heaven,’ he answered. ‘That’s confusing,’ the traveler said. ‘The man down the road said that was Heaven, too.’ ‘Oh, you mean the place with the glitzy, gold street and fake pearly gates? That’s hell.’ ‘Doesn’t it make you angry when they use your name like that?’ ‘Not at all. Actually, we’re happy they screen out the folks who would leave their best friends behind.’

BUSINESS SPOTLIGHT
Dr. Mark Hawn, DDS A SHORT HISTORY
F
rom the time he was a young boy, Dr. Mark Hawn, DDS, knew he wanted to live in Sandpoint. He often traveled with his family from Eau Claire, Wyoming to visit his aunt and uncle, John and Sue Porter. So when he graduated from University of Minnesota Dental School in 2009, he thought he would take a trial run at living in the West. He spent a year in Pocatello in a general practice residency. He was trained by dental specialists who were certified in, among other areas, oral surgery, periodontics, endodontics and sedation dentistry. That year confirmed for him that the Northwest was where he wanted to settle. He planned to start blanketing the area with his resume. The first dentist he contacted was Sandpoint’s Dr. Jim Lewis. The rest is history. He joined the practice in August 2010 and will become Dr. Lewis’ business partner as of November 1st. In addition to general dentistry Dr. Hawn is able to perform advanced procedures including the extraction of wisdom teeth, implants, periodontal surgery and sedation. Dr. Hawn’s parents are physicians and he too was interested in that field. But his parents encouraged him to explore other professions which led him to dentistry. Knowing he enjoyed working with his hands and interacting with people, it quickly became clear to Dr. Hawn that it was the profession meant for him. Twice in the past three years, Dr. Hawn has traveled to Peru to help administer dental care to the poor in that country. He hopes to do that again in March.
After moving to Sandpoint Dr. Hawn met his wife, Sara, at Schweitzer Mountain and the two married in March of this year. He enjoys working with Dr. Lewis and his staff and said he especially enjoys building relationships with his patients and taking the extra time to connect with them. “I am very blessed to be here,” said Dr. Hawn.

CARE Corner: Parents Lending Support to Staff and Students Through New Organization Article by Patty Hutchens
S
tacy Temple has always been an involved parent. She and her husband Brad have two sons, an eighth grade student at Sandpoint Middle School and another who is a sophomore at Sandpoint High School.
When she learned late last year that no one had taken on the task of coordinating teacher appreciation week at the high school, a project she was very involved in at the middle school, Stacy made it her mission to establish an organization that supports both staff and students at Sandpoint High School. She met over the summer with her friend, also a mother of a high school student, Stephanie Allen, and from that CARE at Sandpoint High School was born. “The idea resonated with both of us,” said Stacy, who met with Sandpoint High School principal Dr. Becky Meyer, who also enthusiastically supported the idea. CARE, which stands for Caring Adults Recognizing Excellence, already has approximately 100 members and has been fulfilling needs at the high school since new student orientation in August. Stacy stresses that CARE is different from a parent teacher organization at the elementary school level. She said this group of parents recognizes the need for students at the high school level to have independence, and CARE’s mission is to support the students at the high school through supporting their environment and helping them gain independence. “It’s not about micromanaging our kids,” said Stacy. “It’s about promoting excellence.” The organization’s focus is in three primary areas – appreciation, recognition and collaboration. Examples of appreciation shown by the organization include

baking homemade treats for the monthly teacher meetings. “It just adds a special touch,” said Stacy, who adds that her group is in the process of planning other events to show appreciation to the staff. One such project is to provide the teachers with dinner in the teachers’ lounge during the first night of conferences in November. CARE hopes that through its efforts it will further a culture of appreciation and respect in the school environment. To that end the members of CARE, along with input from the staff, will be recognizing a student each month. The choice is not necessarily based on academic performance, but instead on contributions the student has made to his or her school. “We look to what they (the student) have done to make the classroom or the school environment as a whole a better place,” said Stacy. At the homecoming pep rally in early October, September’s student of the month, Carli Giard, was presented with a

Bulldogs Impressive Run Comes to an End Losing to Eventual State Champs Article by Steve Russo
T
he girl’s bulldog volleyball season was not without its challenges, primarily their biggest, their inseason competition being so weak that when it came time to facing stronger teams, they may not be up for the challenge.

Bonneville who knocked the bulldogs out of the tournament last year had also lost to Century earlier. Unfortunately, the bulldogs were missing their outside hitter, Taylor Martin, due to a freak accident where she was struck in the head by a random volleyball prior to the first game starting. Seemingly out of sorts, the bulldogs quickly dropped the first two games. “She’s a force for us on the outside and without her we weren’t ourselves,” said Alsager of Martin. When it came to facing the upper echelon teams the bulldogs (25-10) weren’t quit ready to compete at the level needed to advance. Although cruising to a 3-0 victory in their first match versus Wood River beating them 25-13, 25-11, 25-15, and notching their first state tournament win over 3 seasons, the bulldogs quickly fell victim to two-time defending state champion Century (38-3) in the next match 25-7, 2515, 25-13. Seemingly overmatched, games two and three were closer than the final score. Century’s coach went on to say, “give Sandpoint credit, they made it tough on us and fought hard, but we were able to keep them off balance with our blocking.” The height advantage was evident, and Century showed why they were the team to beat.
Despite all of this, the team rallied and started 7-0 in game three showing Bonneville they weren’t quite finished. As things would prove, Bonneville was too strong versus a handicapped bulldog team and eventually won game three 25-22. “We fought hard, but it was too little too late.” Jim Glaser, Sandpoint assistant coach stated after the game. Bonneville would eventually make it to the championship game to face Century. Century won 3-2 and was crowned state champions for the second year in a row. “That should have been us fighting for the title” stated Madison Russo, “but we fell short and that’s hard to take because we all knew how good this team was. It’s a shame we couldn’t put our best team on the court in the biggest tournament of the year.”

Athletes of the Month Kennedy Search & Jeremiah Gagnon Article by Patty Hutchens | Photos by Jason Duchow Photography
Kennedy Search
K
ennedy is a Sandpoint High School junior who plays on the varsity volleyball team as well as the tennis team. She also used to play basketball. This is Kennedy’s first year on the SHS varsity volleyball team. She has also been on the varsity tennis team for two years. Kennedy was the district champ for tennis in both doubles and singles her freshman and sophomore year. In addition to her athletic achievements, Kennedy’s academic accomplishments include being on the honor roll every semester. She said her worst practices have been in basketball when they had to get a certain number of “sweet 16’s” and they had to do it about 8 times. She said the most memorable moment in sports, however, was winning the regionals for volleyball last year. Kennedy said she likes participating in both team and individual sports. “I like being part of a team in volleyball and also playing by myself in tennis. You can learn so much from yourself and teammates.” She plans to attend either Boise State or Northwest Nazarene University to become either a physician’s assistant or a pediatrician. Kennedy’s Favorite Teacher: Mrs. Knowles. Kennedy said she is fun to be around and is a great teacher! Kennedy’s Favorite Food: Cheesy potato casserole.
Jeremiah Gagnon
J
eremiah is a junior at Sandpoint High School and has been playing sports since he as very young. He started soccer at the age of four and basketball when he was in the sixth grade. As a SHS freshman Jeremiah’s talent landed him on the Sandpoint Bulldog varsity soccer team and he has been a great contributor to the team’s success over the last few years. This fall Jeremiah played a significant role in his team winning the state championship in soccer. He said winning state and scoring two of the team’s three goals in the championship game was definitely the most memorable moment thus far in sports. He says he enjoys team sports because he enjoys the competition, the friends he has made and the chemistry he has with his teammates. “There is no other group of guys I would rather spend my time with,” said Jeremiah. He has a GPA of 3.5 and cites math as his strongest subject. He says out of all the classes he enjoys business classes the most. He plans to attend Boise State and receive a business degree. He would like one day to open a sporting goods store in a small town. Jeremiah’s Favorite Teacher: Mr. Darling. Jeremiah said he looks up to Mr. Darling because he is a nice man who cares. He said Mr. Darling was a war veteran and yet you never hear him complain about anything. Jeremiah’s Favorite Food: Cookies and cream or Oreo milkshake from Dubs, accompanied by a double bacon cheeseburger. “Yum!”

SHS Boys Soccer Team Wins State Championship! Article by Patty Hutchens | Photo by Jason Duchow Photography
F
or senior Jeffrey Rokstad, captain of the Sandpoint High School boys’ soccer team, it was a picture perfect way to end his Sandpoint soccer career – winning the state championship.
Rokstad has been a dedicated soccer player since he was five years old when he started playing in the Sandpoint Soccer Association program. He made the varsity team as a freshman, the last time the boys’ team went to state. This season the team finished with a 14–5–2 record and took home the state title for the first time under head coach Adam Tajan, who is in his third year at the helm. “We went into it (state playoffs) pretty confident because the team has worked hard all year,” said Rokstad who adds that this year more than any other, he felt a unity among the team from the very beginning. On the road to winning the boys 4A state soccer championship the Bulldogs defeated Bishop Kelly in a 4–0 shutout and triumphed over Wood River 2–0. The championship game was a hard fought battle with Sandpoint winning the state title in a 3-2 victory over Skyview. Tajan said there are many factors which contributed to the success of this season, including team unity and year round training. “The group of young men has played together for a long time and they all put in a lot of work in the off season getting prepared for this year.” Tajan said the Inland Empire League was extremely competitive this year, which he believes helped his players prepare for the high level of competition they encountered at the state tournament. “Post Falls, Lake City, Coeur d’Alene and Lakeland were all quality squads this year,” said Tajan. He said there was tough competition among the team members as well, with players battling for starting positions and minutes played. “Each day practice was a very competitive environment,” said Tajan. “You had to earn it and that forced guys to step up and deliver under pressure.” Looking ahead to next year, Tajan said eight of his 22 players will be graduating. But that is not reason for concern. “The current juniors are a tremendous group. I’m very excited about the 2013 campaign” said Tajan who adds that with the addition of several strong JV players, next year’s team is sure to be exceptional. Jeffrey Rokstad agrees and said although he will be graduating, he too is confident the younger players on the team can once again win the title next year. “They just need to keep playing the way they are and they will win,” said Rokstad.

It Works® Body Wrap FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS
Try one today for just $25 or get 4/$59 as a loyal customer!
How does it work? It Works!® body contouring Applicators offer a natural solution to take you from flab to fab! These non-woven, cloth wraps are infused with a powerful, botanically-based formula that delivers maximum tightening, toning, and firming results where applied to the skin.
How often can I use the Ultimate Body Applicator? Applications can be applied once every 72 hours. The ingredients continue to work for 72 hours after you have applied the Applicator, so you may continue to see progressive results over this time period. Each Applicator is only to be used once. Discard after use.
Body contouring Applicators continuously hydrate for firmer, smoother, more youthful-looking skin and help to reduce the appearance of unsighlty cellulite and skin slackering. The Ultimate Body Applicator™ can be applied to many areas of the body, and the Chin & Neck Applicator™ has been designed specifically to fit the chin and neck area.
How long should I wear each Applicator? Each Ultimate Body Applicator should be worn for at least 45 minutes. Because the Ultimate Body Applicator is a safe and naturally-based product, it is safe to wear longer than 45 minutes if desired. In fact, we’ve found that one of the easiest ways to use the Applicator is to wear it all night long while you sleep. If it is your first time using the Ultimate Body Applicator, we recommend that you only leave it on the 45 minutes to test your skin’s sensitivity to the natural active ingredients with detoxifying properties.
For best results, use Defining Gel, our daily body contouring gel lotion, twice a day in between your Applicator uses. Does the Ultimate Body Applicator work on cellulite? Yes, the natural active ingredients in the Ultimate Body Applicator, Chin & Neck Applicator, and Defining Gel have been proven to help minimize the appearance of cellulite, especially with continued use. Do the results last? The Ultimate Body Applicator helps detoxify, tighten, tone, and firm in a manner that produces lasting results. As is true with any weight loss or body contouring product, you can reverse the results you see from the Ultimate Body Applicator with poor eating habits or lack of exercise. What will it feel like when I use the Applicator? While wearing an Ultimate Body Applicator, you will experience a slight tingling, cool, soothing sensation that lets you know instantly that the Applicator is working.

Pet Parenting Tips Around the Holidays TENDING TO YOUR PET DURING THE HOLIDAYS
P
et parenting can be as crazy as it is fun, especially around the holidays. Add the stress of hosting family and friends, and many pet parents end up ignoring Fido or Fluffy in favor of cooking a feast or wrapping last-minute gifts. So, how do you find balance between preparing for the holidays and tending to your pet? • Keep Plants and Goodies Out of Reach: Many traditional holiday plants, like poinsettias and mistletoe, can be harmful to your pet’s health, so be sure to keep these out of reach. Also, refrain from sharing specific holiday treats with your tail-wagger, particularly fruitcake and sugar-free goods, which contain dog-toxic ingredients. • Decorate Wisely: Holiday decor can be dangerous for pets, so it’s important to take certain precautions when decorating. Place fresh trees in discreet corners, and keep lights, ornaments and tinsel off the lower branches. Deter your pet from electrical cords by spraying the cords with lemon peel or bitter orange tea. • Mind Your Pet’s Manners: Heightened activity at home can affect your pet’s behavior, so it’s important to prepare. Hosting small gatherings prior to the holiday can help reinforce good manners. If you know your pet won’t hold back his excitement, set aside a safe room with a bed, water, toys and some treats where he can stay during your event. • Get the Right Travel Gear: Crates are useful for all forms of travel, but if flying, be certain to use an airlineapproved shipping crate. Take all health records with you, and ensure that your pet is wearing a collar and tag
with appropriate contact information. • Give Back with Gifts: While toys and treats are always welcomed by our furry relatives, consider a comfortable bed or deluxe grooming session to pamper your pet instead. Older pets may especially benefit from a therapeutic bed or massage. For more tips on pet parenting around the holidays, visit www.pet360.com. Roxy’s Mobile Dog Grooming We come to you! SMALL TOWN SHERIFF
In one small rural town the sheriff also fulfilled the role of the town’s veterinarian. One night the phone rang. The sheriff’s wife answered.
There were appreciative murmurs from the crowd. “Not a stone in it has been touched,” the guide continued, “nothing altered, nothing replaced in all those years.”
An agitated voice inquired, “Is your husband there?”
“Wow,” piped up one woman from the rear of the group. “They must have the same landlord I do.”
“Well, do you need him as the sheriff or the vet?” the wife asked.
CAFETERIA CHOICES
“Both,” came the reply. “We can’t get our dog’s mouth open and there’s a burglar in it!”
EUROPEAN TOUR
A group of tourists was being guided through an ancient castle in Europe. “This place,” the guide told them, “is 600 years old.”
