Lillstreet’s nationally-recognized Ceramics department offers classes that are appropriate for students of all skill levels. Students ranging from first-timers to advanced ceramicists can take advantage of our generous open studio hours while enrolled in classes such as wheelthrowing, handbuilding, sculpture, slip casting, and more. With hundreds of options for glaze combinations, a variety of firing options, and access to our state-of-the-art equipment and facilities, students are afforded every opportunity to find their way with clay.

First-Time Artist First-Time Potter 5 Weeks Dress for mess and spin the wheel to shape clay into the basic forms of mugs and bowls. Learn to work with ceramic tools and glaze your own pottery. Tile Making 10 Weeks Looking for something unique to adorn your kitchen, bathroom, or fireplace? Learn to make decorative tiles from a slab of clay. As physical appearances can be deceiving, your sculptural portraits will express the contradictions and complexities of your identity. Low Fire I: Wheel Exploration 10 Weeks Explore terra cotta and focus on surface design by utilizing the unique benefits that low firing offers, including the low fire glaze palette. Introduction to Paper Clay

Soda I: Learning Surfaces

10 Weeks

Chart your progress along your personal journey in clay. Take inventory of your skill set and create a path forward by recognizing the areas in need of development, working in a series and establishing personal goals for growth. Students will participate in a private, cone 10 reduction firing at the end of the session.

Learn to use paper clay and explore the many possibilities this material provides in the ceramics studio. This more forgiving material will give you hands-on experience in numerous handbuilding construction methods as well as decoration techniques to create exciting and unique pieces.

Soda firing offers the opportunity to infuse a bit of “chance” into the ceramic process. Each week different surface techniques will be demonstrated for use in the soda kiln. By using slips and glazes, sodafiring becomes accessible and more predictable. You will participate in all stages of the process, including required kiln loading and unloading outside of class time.

Prerequisite: One year of wheelthrowing classes

Soda I: Beginning Soda Firing

10 Weeks This independently-driven class begins each week with a potluck and group discussion about ongoing projects. The instructor is on hand to guide you through your projects, problem solve and demonstrate as needed. Prerequisite: Two sessions of Beginning/Advanced Beginning Wheelthrowing or Handbuilding & one intermediate ceramics class

Soda II: Tea and Soda 10 Weeks In this unique class, students will learn about the function and creation of unique teapots and tea-related accessories. We will travel around the world to explore both Eastern and Western vessels and the tea brewed with them. Additionally, students will utilize the soda firing process to enhance and enliven their tea-centric creations. Prerequisite: Two sessions of Soda I or instructor approval

Sculpting Critters

10 Weeks

Soda firing offers a dazzling variety of surfaces both planned and unplanned for the artist to explore. Demonstrations will include an array of more advanced techniques that reveal how to achieve more refined and intentional results in the soda kiln. Participation in all stages of the process, including loading and unloading outside of class time, is expected of each student.

Does making multiples of your favorite cup, vase or other sculptural or functional forms interest you? Learn to make two-part plaster molds of household objects to use for slip casting. This technique allows you to pour a specially formulated, liquid clay into your mold and create multiples of the same object.

Learn to use the core elements of hand building (pinching, coiling and slabs) to build hollow animals with lots of character. Demonstrations of construction of patterns for limbs, the use of paddling techniques and a variety of additive methods will take place weekly.

Prerequisite: Two sessions of Soda I or instructor approval

10 Weeks Get ready for the big burn! In this class, you’ll create work for a sessionend firing in Justin Rothshank’s wood-fueled anagama kiln. This class presents a rare, hands-on opportunity to learn about, and participate in, one of the world’s oldest continuing firing traditions. Students will be required to participate in at least one 6-hour firing shift in Goshen, IN during the firing in early November. Form Focus: Still Life in Clay Learn to use various ceramic handbuilding techniques to recreate objects from a still life in clay. By observing simple objects and analyzing their forms, we will find ways to translate them into clay forms with personal expressions. Family Clay-cation Workshop

Thanksgiving Serving Dishes

Want to have a fun day out without hiring a babysitter? You won’t have to leave the kids at home in our Family Clay-cation Workshop! We’ll prepare a multimedia activity for the little guys, so parents & guardians can create fearlessly—just down the hall. Parents will work with slabs of hire-fire clay to create functional mugs with a colorful glaze firing of their choosing. Kids will learn to roll slabs, decorate and paint with glazes to create a unique mug and plate.

Up your Thanksgiving game by creating two serving dishes for your table. You will get to choose up two of the following forms to make: a small serving bowl, an oval-shaped shallow dish and/or a cheese plate. The dishes will be made out of a high fire stoneware, and you will get to pick the color for your finished dishes to be glazed in. All pieces made will be ready for pick up by November 24th.

This unique workshop opportunity is for children ages 5+. Registration must include at least one child and an adult.

Open to beginning and continuing students of figure drawing, each session begins with instructor demos followed by long poses for individual development. The instructor will work with you one-on-one, at your level. Students supply their own materials; charcoal, pastel, Conte, and oil paint are all welcome.

Experiment with acrylic and oil painting techniques that redefined painting in the mid to late twentieth century. Through material experimentation, we will explore movements such as Abstract Expressionism, Pop Art, and Photorealism – all while learning the stories, techniques, and motivations of artists like Mark Rothko, Joan Mitchell, Chuck Close, Gerard Richter, and other prominent influencers. Work one on one with your instructor to develop a project of personal interest, be it a portrait of a family member, pet, place you have visited, or any project which needs further development. This class meets the needs of oil painters with an emphasis on classical painting techniques used in representational painting.

Work from the nude model for a more in-depth portrait or figure study by focusing on long-pose sessions. There will be individualized instruction at the student’s level, and each model pose will last one or two weeks. Previous drawing experience helpful. Students work in the material of their choice.

Electroforming is a metal plating method that slowly deposits copper on to the surface of your work to create more density and support. You will start by exploring a variety of processes of plating on copper foils, waxes and plastics. We’ll then move on to more complex methods that relate to your particular interests, like jewelry making and sculpture.

Looking to improve your soldering skills? This class will help you feel confident using sheet, wire and paste solder. Multiple soldering techniques, basic jigs, and more advanced setups will be demonstrated. Most materials will be available for purchase from your instructor.

The Bezel and Beyond

Using low-carbon steel, explore liquid form enamel’s possibilities through color mixing, watercolor-like washes, sgraffito and spraying liquid enamels. Jewelry, sculpture and small panel paintings can be made by kiln-fusing color enamel glass to the steel surface. Simple soldering on steel, sandblasting and kiln firings enamels will be covered throughout these processes.

Torch Fired Enameling 5 Weeks Let’s fire up that torch and melt powdered glass onto copper! This is a great way to add color in a spontaneous way to your designs. Be more proficient at stone setting and soldering by focusing on bezel setting. Learn to create bezels more quickly, with ease, and improve skills learned in Metalsmithing I. Organic Forms Silver 5 Weeks So often the term organic is misused to describe pieces that are rustic or unfinished. Explore both classic letterpress techniques and contemporary practices on different types of presses. This technique uses movable type to create an impression on the paper when printed. Explore contemporary and traditional methods of intaglio printmaking including line etching, aquatint and drypoint on copper plates to create an edition. Utilize etching’s distinctive qualities to produce multiples, creating beautiful handmade prints in single or multiple colors.

First-Time Embroidery 5 Weeks Make new friends while learning embroidery with a contemporary spin. Boro and Sashiko Stitching 5 Weeks BORO is the sewing together of rags or scraps of cloth. Inspired by this Japanese technique, you will develop your own visual expression through exercises such as stitching, cutting, mending, patching, and assembling fabric. Dye fabric with indigo and apply Sashiko (running) stitches to these small pieces of cloth and assemble them to form a small Japanese style quilt. All levels welcome.

Quilting II: Improvisational Piecing 5 Weeks Flex your artistic muscles and create unique pieced quilt tops using improvisational techniques. Fashion I: Garment Construction 10 Weeks Make clothing that fits your body and personality perfectly! Put your basic sewing skills to work as you investigate commercial sewing patterns and explore different kinds of fabric. The option to alter patterns for style and fit is encouraged in this more independent environment. An instructor will teach methods for professional finishes that will make you proud to wear what you’ve made.

Textiles

All around us, certain flowers, tree barks, and fruits can be used as natural dyes. Experience this incredible process through various methods of natural dyeing, including indigo, cochineal, and other materials. We’ll experiment with Shibori (including stitching, pleating, twisting), over-dyeing techniques, and mordants to create a spectrum of colors. You provide fabrics after the first week.

Workshops Pom Pom Bomb 1 Day Want to add some flair to your backpack, bag, key chain, or clothes? Pom poms are a quick and fun way to accessorize or decorate your home. Use several techniques to make different sizes and even patterns of pom poms. Walk out with at least three new poofs to add to any outfit or wall in your house. No experience necessary.

Whether you’ve run out of clean laundry or you just can’t find anything that fits right, join us, and learn how to make your own underwear. It’s easier than you think! You’ll use sergers and the home sewing machines to create custom underwear in a variety of styles. Materials provided on the first day.

Develop and master the art of designing patterns for fabric yardage. Translate your designs into seamless patterns through straight repeats, half drops, and toss patterns. Learn the importance of scale, balance, and color through several experimental repeat techniques. Students provide most materials. Come prepared to print with inks or dyes in the first class.

Who doesn’t need an extra basket? Learn to make one yourself out of fabric in just one afternoon. With the use of interfacing, these baskets have stiff sides, and the pattern can be used to make multiple baskets in the future. These baskets are perfect for gift-giving or organizing your sewing stash. Students will provide fabric; a materials list will be provided.

Guided Quilting Projects 8 Weeks Begin a quilting project or revisit your unfinished work. This class allows you to work individually while tapping into the creative energy of your classmates and instructor. Incorporate quilting techniques into your art practice and conquer the range of technical issues that arise as you take your ideas from concept to quilt.

Tuition credits are good indefinitely toward any classes, workshops or gallery items and are not redeemable for cash under any circumstances. Refund Policy For Dropped Classes And Workshops: Tuition is refundable for all classes and workshops dropped more than one week prior to the session start date, minus a $40 processing fee. Classes dropped during the week prior to the start of the class session are eligible for a studio credit only (no refunds). Classes dropped during the first week of the session are eligible for a 50% studio credit (no refund). Classes dropped after the first week of the session are not eligible for a credit or refund except in cases of documented medical emergency with physician’s note. Students are responsible for notifying the lillstreet staff that they wish to drop a class or workshop. Not attending class does not constitute an official withdrawal or cancellation of tuition or fees. Visiting artist workshops and summer camps have separate cancellation policies. Public Transportation: Take the CTA Brown Line to Montrose, or use Montrose Bus #78. The Metra Union Pacific North line Ravenswood stop is located four blocks north of Lillstreet.
