Lillstreet’s nationally-recognized Ceramics department offers classes that are appropriate for students of all skill levels. Students ranging from first-timers to advanced ceramicists can take advantage of our generous open studio hours while enrolled in classes such as wheelthrowing, handbuilding, sculpture, slip casting, and more. With hundreds of options for glaze combinations, a variety of firing options, and access to our state-of-the-art equipment and facilities, students are afforded every opportunity to find their way with clay.

First-Time Artist First-Time Potter 4 and 5 Weeks Dress for mess and spin the wheel to shape clay into the basic forms of mugs and bowls. Learn to work with ceramic tools and glaze your own pottery. Handbuilding will also be introduced; including pinch pots, bowls, and small serving trays. Plan to purchase a clay tool kit at Lillstreet. The class fee includes one 12-pound bag of clay.

Beginner’s Guide to Bowls and Cups 5 Weeks If you don’t have much experience at the potter’s wheel and want a brief class to see if throwing is for you, then this is the perfect class to choose. Students will focus on learning how to throw basic cups and bowls in this “sample size” session. Lessons will include the basics of making, refining, and finishing simple, functional wares.

All About Slabs

Drawing on Pots

5 Weeks

Low fire surface treatments can give your work vibrant colors and options for narrative illustrations. Learn to use slips, underglazes, and glazes to make your terra cotta forms come to life. Demonstrations and discussions will include techniques for developing illustrated surfaces and narrative elements.

Focus on the possibilities that are available to create functional and sculptural ceramic forms with slabs. Students will explore forms, textures, surface, and content during the process. Demonstrations will be given during each class, and we will have discussions about contemporary ceramics examples.

Whether your interests are in functional pottery or sculptural objects, the use of slips and stencils can create rich surfaces full of layered images. Demonstrations include mono-printing, sgraffito, inlay, and Mishima techniques. Learn to use pattern and narrative elements to make the most out of your pots.

5 Weeks Develop your skills at throwing the “perfect” cylinder. Through increasing poundage, learn to use your clay efficiently by occasionally cutting open to check for even cross-section. Focus on finishing the form as much as possible by wet trimming. Explore the variety of forms made from cylindrical cups and vases. All levels welcome

You’ve mastered the basics; now it’s time to improve your ceramic skills while building functional and sculptural objects. Weekly demonstrations will teach more complex techniques to manipulate clay and allow the further development of your handbuilt work. Discussions of contemporary approaches will help you find your voice in clay.

In this handbuilding class, students will focus on how to make functional household items such as pour-overs, butter dishes, jars, and more. We will explore the use of slabs, coils, and pinching. Discussions will address the balance of decorative elements with functionality and will help your development as a maker of wares.

Sculpting the Head 5 Weeks Self-portraiture is prevalent in art history because many artists have discovered that the one model they can always count on is themselves. This class will teach you how to observe your head in a sculptural way and making yourself in solid clay. The final sculpture will be hollowed out and decorated with color slip or glaze. In this class, you will discover several ways to go big, including centering more clay, stacking tall forms, and throwing large platters without centering. Home & Garden Pottery 5 Weeks This independently-driven class begins each week with a potluck and group discussion about ongoing projects. The instructor is on hand to guide you through your projects, problem solve, and demonstrate as needed. Prerequisite: Two sessions of Beginning/Advanced Beginning Wheelthrowing or Handbuilding & one intermediate ceramics class

Introduction to Moldmaking & Slipcasting 5 Weeks Learn the basics of making one and two-part molds from found and crafted objects of your own choosing or creation. With these molds, you will create several objects and explore constructing and altering multiple casts. Develop the potential to incorporate slip casting and mold making into various aspects of your practice

5 Weeks Experience flashes of color, textured surfaces, and the excitement of unpredictable results found by utilizing the distinct atmospheric qualities of the soda kiln. Weekly demonstrations will encourage more complex forms. By using slips and glazes, soda-firing becomes accessible and more predictable. Workshops Date Night: Cocktail Cups Join us for a celebratory evening dedicated to the handcrafted happy hour. Roll up your sleeves and dress for mess! You’ll learn to hand build cocktail cups from terra cotta clay using slabs and templates. Create, decorate, and embellish them in your own, unique style. Once fired, you’ll have two handmade cups to toast with for years to come. BYOB, must be 21+ to consume alcohol.

Create a one of a kind holiday gift or make yourself a set of truly unique ornaments. Using slabs of high fire porcelain, you will cut out your own shapes and decorate with a variety of ceramic colors. Each participant will get to make up to four ornaments and will be available for pick up in one week.

Winter Mugs Whether it’s for coffee, tea, soup or hot cocoa, create your own clay mug to warm you up on those chilly days. Working with stoneware slabs, you will learn to construct, texture, decorate, and carve into clay to make it your own functional piece of art. Choose a glaze that will be applied to your mug after its final firing.

Soda firing offers a dazzling variety of surfaces, both planned and unplanned for the artist to explore. Demonstrations will include an array of more advanced techniques that reveal how to achieve more refined and intentional results in the soda kiln. Grab your sweetie, bestie, or crew for a Friday night “throwdown.” Join us for a fun evening of getting a little messy and trying your hands at wheelthrowing. Learn basic techniques, and throw as much clay as you can with the help of our skilled instructors. At night’s end, pick two pieces to have glazed. Each participant must register and pay the workshop fee. BYOB, Must be 21+ to consume alcohol.

Learn to create with gouache, also referred to as opaque watercolor. Gouache is an extremely versatile and forgiving medium, great for those looking to build on their watercolor skills. We will cover color mixing, brushwork, paint application, layering, and blending. We will also touch on more general principles such as composition, shape and form, light, and value.

Oil pastels, with their bright colors and gooey texture, offer artists a visceral way to create vibrant works. You will employ various techniques, including optical blending, layering, and creating washes to take advantage of some of the unique properties of this medium. Please bring a medium pastel drawing pad and a small set of artist-quality oil pastels to the first class.

Explore the art of watercolor painting and discover how to paint wet into wet for expressive painting. In this class, you will learn to define shapes with color, create a color plan, and establish value from color. We will also delve into exercises that will teach about composition, color mixing, brush style, shape and form, light and value, paint application, and layering.

Learn to maximize your use of color to add vibrancy and depth to your work. Our focus will be on working with complementary colors, warm versus cool, color mixing, and blending. Learn the fundamentals and history of traditional dip pen calligraphy. Using a variety of tools and materials, explore and practice several styles of alphabets and lettering and discover what works best for you. You will learn a few techniques, such as copperplate, blackletter, and italic.

Finally cleared time in your schedule to make art and found yourself staring at a blank page? This class will help you strengthen your artistic voice and banish artist’s block. Each week will include creative exercises designed to help you generate new ideas. Your ideas will guide your individualized instruction as you expand your skills as a painter. If you choose, a still life setup will be available each week to further develop your skills in representational painting. This class will build on and enhance your previous painting experience.

Work one on one with your instructor to develop a project of personal interest. Some examples include a portrait of a family member, pet, place you have visited, or any project which needs further development. This class meets the needs of oil painters with an emphasis on classical painting techniques used in representational painting.

Expand your vision in a lively, interactive environment using all forms of abstraction and nonobjective painting. Our focus will be on formal issues, exploring and encouraging skill development, techniques, and materials. Individual needs will be addressed. Works of influential artists will be discussed, and visits to galleries encouraged. This class will help you develop and refine your personal creative goals.

Copper Electroforming 5 Weeks Electroforming is a metal plating method that slowly deposits copper on to the surface of your work to create more density and support. You will start by exploring a variety of processes of plating on copper foils, waxes, and plastics. We’ll then move on to more complex methods that relate to your particular interests, like jewelry making and sculpture. Prerequisite: Metalsmithing I or instructor approval

Working with Wax & Casting 5 Weeks Explore the three-dimensional possibilities of hard wax for carving and soft wax for modeling. You can expect to complete two small pieces such as rings, charms or miniature sculptures. Two castings will be done in class, and waxes can be brought to a production caster for a nominal fee.

5 Weeks Learn to create textured rings, stacking rings, and spinning rings. You’ll even make a ring with a bezel setting for a cabochon stone. Silver, some cabochons and additional metal will be available for purchase from your instructor. All levels welcome

Photography

Lillstreet’s Digital Photography program offers artist-taught classes covering a wide range of topics — from basic technical instruction to advanced creative projects. We engage in conversations surrounding contemporary digital media and facilitate students’ critical thinking skills when it comes to reading the image. Equipped with Adobe software, Epson printers, and a large lighting studio, we’re here to help you master the tools and concepts necessary to create meaningful images that stand out in a culture in which everyone has access to a camera.

Beginner/ Advanced Beginner Photoshop I 5 Weeks

First-Time Artist First-Time Digital Photography 4 and 5 Weeks This class is designed specifically for those who are brand new to digital photography. Get to know your DSLR with the help of an experienced instructor who will guide you through how your camera works and how to control its various exposure settings. Learn the functions of aperture, ISO, and shutter speed while you explore the visual elements of image-making. USB drive and camera with manual settings required, DSLR preferred.

First-Time Photo Editing 4 and 5 Weeks What do we do with our digital images once they’re shot? This introductory class will guide you through the basics of digital workflow, file organization, image enhancements, and printing using various editing tools across Adobe Photoshop and Lightroom. Learn the strengths and weaknesses of these two programs and how you can effectively integrate them to meet all your photo editing needs. This class is not designed for images made using smartphone cameras.

Take your Photoshop skills to the next level in this invigorating and informative class. This course will build on the Photoshop basics learned in First-Time Photo Editing. Explore printmaking and handmade books in our fully-equipped studio. Letterpress and bookbinding complement techniques such as etching, relief, and screen printing. Explore both classic letterpress techniques and contemporary practices on different types of presses. This technique uses movable type to create an impression on paper when printed. Projects are designed to showcase type, color, and the printed form. The material fee includes ink, newsprint, and a sampling of specialty paper.

Explore contemporary and traditional methods of intaglio printmaking, including line etching, aquatint, and drypoint on copper plates to create an edition. Utilize etching’s distinctive qualities to produce multiples, creating beautiful handmade prints in single or multiple colors.

Learn the basic skills, tools, and vocabulary of bookbinding and book arts. You will create simple folded books, pamphlets, Japanese stab bindings, accordion, and Coptic books.

This class is for those who have screen printed before, or those interested in refining their skills. You will learn new tricks such as color fades and watercolor monoprinting while focusing on projects such as poster runs, handmade cards, and fine art editions. All inks and some paper included in material fee.

Make miniature book pendants for a unique handmade accessory or gift! The instructor will also introduce methods of closures for a leather cord to complete the necklace. Two methods will be introduced, and supplies will be provided. Students are welcome to bring their own supplies as well.

Introduction to Relief Printmaking 4 Weeks Learn to make relief prints by carving and inking linoleum blocks. This class includes detailed instruction on tools, techniques, and the translation of ideas. We will explore single and multiple block approaches, collage techniques, and have the opportunity to incorporate monoprint techniques for even greater creativity. Works can be printed with the press or by hand. Some materials are included; additional supplies may be purchased from the instructor.

Make a box to fit a favorite book or keepsake. Students will learn methods for measuring and constructing archival books that will last for generations. All supplies will be provided.

Toner Litho Transfer on Clay 5 Weeks Print repeatable images on green or leather-hard clay tiles, vessels, and sculptural forms. Use paper lithography techniques that can be applied directly to clay at many stages using special oil-based inks. Learn surface design techniques that can be adapted for wheel-thrown or hand-built forms, for low or high fire clay bodies. Ceramics students enrolled in the previous session can keep your shelves in the ceramics department.

The Textiles Department welcomes students of all levels whether you sew, print, dye, or collect fabric. Our student population is diverse — from professional artists who sell at artisan fairs, online shops, and consignment, to those who enjoy working with their hands and want to explore something new. Our instructors will guide you as you turn your project ideas into one-of-a-kind completed works of functional, decorative, or fine art. First-Time Crochet 5 Weeks All it takes is a hook and a ball of yarn, and soon you’ll be crocheting your way to scarves, blankets and other cozy projects! Learn how to hold your hook and make a basic stitch. Using new skills like increasing, decreasing, and stitching in the round, leave with at least one finished project to wear or gift. One hook and yarn for your first day will be provided.

Make new friends while learning embroidery with a contemporary spin. Each week we’ll practice stitches such as the chain stitch, bullion knot, and turkey work on a custom sampler designed and printed by the teaching artist. Build layers of thread onto your cloth, leaving with a finished sampler to show off your skills. Material fee includes all supplies.

Whether you are interested in onesies, custom yardage or band t-shirts, this class shows how easy it can be to put your designs onto fabric. Our studio is equipped with a UV exposure unit, aluminum screens, and large print tables. Projects can include tote bags, gifts, or fabric for sewing and quilting. Sculptural needle felting is simply stabbing loose wool with a needle repeatedly which, effectively, knots the fibers together into a semi-solid state. You can form shapes for animals, flowers, people, landscapes and more! Learn three dimensional and flat piece additive needle felting in this class using wool roving. Indigo and Natural Dye 4 Weeks All around us, certain flowers, tree barks, and fruits can be used as natural dyes. Experience this incredible process through various methods of natural dyeing, including indigo, cochineal, and other materials. We’ll experiment with Shibori (including stitching, pleating, twisting), over-dyeing techniques, and mordants to create a spectrum of colors. You provide fabrics after the first week.

Guided Sewing Projects 5 Weeks You’ve got the sewing basics down, now take the next step to complete your one-of-a-kind sewing projects. An experienced instructor will help you select an appropriate project and walk you through the steps to complete it. Block Printed Fabric Gift Wrapping Family Workshop

Pom Pom Holiday Decorations Family Workshop 1 Day Looking for a new and fun way to decorate your home for the holidays? Pom poms are fun to make and can be all sorts of shapes, sizes, colors and can even be customized with sequins and ribbon! Using yarn and other provided materials, leave this workshop with beautiful poms as garlands, ornaments or gifts. An excellent activity for kids! Ages 8 and up welcome with an adult. No more than two kids per adult, please.

Gift wrap can be gorgeous and sustainable. Inspired by furoshiki, or traditional Japanese gift wrapping cloths, we will learn to block print cloth that gift recipients will enjoy passing along. Create your own stamp and customize each piece by playing with color and pattern. We will also demonstrate methods of wrapping and tying to make the package complete. Young artists become explorers as they learn to create fearlessly while investigating a variety of media and creative processes. We present opportunities for students to develop critical thinking skills, enhance creativity, and build confidence. Students are encouraged to discover their own artistic interests while refining technical abilities. Our classes are kept small and taught by highly skilled teaching artists.

Ages 1-3 Smocks are available, but dress for mess! A caregiver participates with the child in these classes. In order to provide the best quality time with your toddler, kindly refrain from bringing non-registered children to class.

Lil’ Artists 4 Weeks Music and art collide in this fun, creative combination class for our youngest artists. We’ll begin with songs, instruments, and dance before moving to the art table to explore paint, collage, and clay. These multimedia, sensory art classes are specially designed to nurture your little one’s creativity, build, and develop investigative fine motor skills. Projects emphasize social skills and visual thinking through an inspiring and art-filled time.

In this skill-building class, kids will be introduced to new art materials, tools, and the work of a new artist each week. Students will learn at least three specific ways to use tools to alter and manipulate materials. We’ll then use their new skills to follow their imaginations in creating their own unique artwork. Students will use clay, paint, paper, fabric, and other media.

The world of stuffed animals comes alive in this bright and colorful, skill-building class! Kids learn how to imagine, design, and hand sew their very own plushies. In this fun intro to design and tactile creativity, we’ll develop our fine motor skills while making small and large plushies using a variety of materials.

Come explore the world of cartooning with us! Students will learn the process of writing and drawing a complete short story and find inspiration in popular culture and comics. Inspirations can be based on real-life experiences, dreams, or an idea they’ve always wanted to put into words and images.

Learn the basic skills needed to center clay and throw a pot while encouraging the expression of your personal ideas on the wheel. We will also explore glazing as we create our own collection of pottery. Students will make functional pieces such as vases, plates, bowls, and mugs.

Handbuilding & Wheelthrowing 4 Weeks This class is an excellent opportunity to try your hand at clay. We’ll spend time learning the basic techniques of handbuilding, then practice making pottery on the wheel. The combination of techniques will prepare kids to make great pots and unique sculptures.

Learn how to paint with a variety of media such as pastels, inks, watercolors, tempera, and acrylics. We’ll also explore different application methods such as color mixing and paint layering. Block-Printed Tote Bags Learn the basics of textile surface design and take home a tote-ally awesome reusable bag! Together, kids and adults will carve out a printing block using linocutting techniques. We’ll show you how to create an exciting pattern repeat and print your design onto a canvas tote bag with colorful fabric paints.

School’s Out Camp Head into 2020 with resolutions to make more art. Join us during winter break as we keep warm, stay busy, and create fearlessly all day long. We’ll explore handbuilding with clay, printmaking, large 3D sculptures, and fiber art.

4 Weeks Learn to generate a wealth of new ideas by combining sketches and collaged materials to push the boundaries of our compositional possibilities. We will experiment with perspective, space, scale, and shape by breaking images into moveable and interchangeable parts. Our works on paper can serve as preliminary sketches for later work, or stand alone as unique art objects in and of themselves.

Cold weather is the perfect time to appreciate the warmth of clay! In this fun, creative workshop, we’ll learn to make mugs for cocoa, bowls for soup, and other objects to wrap your hands around on a cozy winter day.

Private Lessons Would you prefer individualized instruction over a classroom situation? Is there a specific technique you’ve always wanted to learn but don’t have the time to commit to a 10 week class? If this is what you’ve been looking for we have some options for you to choose from. • A two-hour minimum commitment is required. • Your customized lesson can be for one person, two or three. • No previous experience necessary. • Private classes can be set up in any of our departments. • Your lesson includes open studio time on the day of your lesson only; it does not include open studio for the week.

Class Age Restrictions: All classes are for ages 16 years and older unless otherwise noted.

Tools & Materials: Students may be required to purchase a tool kit from lillstreet, or other materials in order to complete class work. Unless otherwise specified, materials will be provided for the first class session and students will receive a supply list for purchase.

Cancellations & Refunds (Please Read Carefully)

Cancellations: Classes are canceled when enrollment minimums are not reached. Students will be notified if classes are canceled and will be eligible for a full refund or class credit. Tuition credits are good indefinitely toward any classes, workshops or gallery items and are not redeemable for cash under any circumstances. Refund Policy For Dropped Classes And Workshops: Tuition is refundable for all classes and workshops dropped more than one week prior to the session start date, minus a $40 processing fee. Classes dropped during the week prior to the start of the class session are eligible for a studio credit only (no refunds). Classes dropped during the first week of the session are eligible for a 50% studio credit (no refund). Classes dropped after the first week of the session are not eligible for a credit or refund except in cases of medical emergency. Students are responsible for notifying the lillstreet staff that they wish to drop a class or workshop. Not attending class does not constitute an official withdrawal or cancellation of tuition or fees. Visiting artist workshops and summer camps have separate cancellation policies.
