Ceramics

Lillstreet’s nationally-recognized Ceramics department offers classes that are appropriate for students of all skill levels. Students ranging from first-timers to advanced ceramicists can take advantage of our generous open studio hours while enrolled in classes such as wheelthrowing, handbuilding, sculpture, slip casting, and more. With hundreds of options for glaze combinations, a variety of firing options, and access to our state-of-the-art equipment and facilities, students are afforded every opportunity to find their way with clay.

First-Time Artist First-Time Potter 5 Weeks Dress for mess and spin the wheel to shape clay into the basic forms of mugs and bowls. Learn to work with ceramic tools and glaze your own pottery. Handbuilding will also be introduced; including pinch pots, bowls and small serving trays. Plan to purchase a clay tool kit at Lillstreet. The class fee includes one 12-pound bag of clay. Each student receives half of a shelf to store work, clay, and tools.

Tile Making 10 Weeks Looking for something unique to adorn your kitchen, bathroom, or fireplace? Learn to make decorative tiles from a slab of clay. We’ll teach you how to build up and carve into clay, then make a plaster mold from your tile to make multiples. We will also discuss firing and glazing. 10 Weeks Bring your stories, dreams, and myths to life with hand-built clay forms. An optional, open-ended prompt is given at the start of each class to help generate ideas. Classes include the exchange of stories and ideas as well as guidance on forming, texturing, and finishing your work. In the final session, we will view and discuss each other’s work in terms of dreams, myths, or stories expressed.

Create functional or sculptural forms by exploring the fundamental techniques of handbuilding. Have you always wanted to sculpt figuratively but didn’t know where to start? Take this class to learn the basics of handbuilding and how it’s used to form figurative sculptures. You will progress through simple abstractions to full detailed bodies, focusing on features like eyes, mouths, hands, and hair. Learn how to coil build and free form clay into figures of your own imagination.

Learn the unique benefits and versatility of working with Terra Cotta clay while experimenting with different types of low fire surface design, including slips, terra sigillata, and low fire glazes. Have a chance to learn the basics of glaze technology, glaze testing, and building the correct vocabulary around glaze finish.

Advanced Handbuilding 10 Weeks

Ceramics

Improve your skills for making hand-built forms while building functional and sculptural objects. Weekly demonstrations will teach more sophisticated techniques to manipulate clay and allow further development of your handbuilt work. Demonstrations will be designed to meet the specific needs of the students. Each student receives two shelves to store work, clay, and tools. Prerequisite: Two sessions of Intermediate Handbuilding

Intermediate/ Advanced Classes Intermediate Wheelthrowing 10 Weeks Design your pottery and establish a personal aesthetic while learning intermediate techniques to make complex forms. You will explore throwing off the hump, learn how to use the spray booth, receive weekly demonstrations, and experiment with new glaze combinations to help develop your signature look. Projects range from creating sets, lidded jars, pitchers, and more. Each student receives two shelves to store work, clay, and tools. Prerequisite: Two session of Beginning/Advanced Beginning Wheelthrowing

Soda I: Beginning Soda Firing 10 Weeks Experience flashes of color, textured surfaces and the excitement of unpredictable results found by utilizing the distinct atmospheric qualities of the soda kiln. Weekly demonstrations will encourage more complex forms. By using slips and glazes, soda-firing becomes accessible and more predictable. You will participate in all stages of the process, including required kiln loading and unloading outside of class time. Each student receives two shelves to store work, clay, and tools. 8 SPRING CLASSES BEGIN THE WEEKS OF MARCH 30 AND MAY 4

Soda II: Throwing for the Soda Kiln 10 Weeks Analyze the critical steps necessary to create dynamic and inventive ceramic work utilizing Lillstreet’s urban soda kiln. Students will use the potter’s wheel to create and alter pots by adding lids and handles, faceting, and incorporating applied textures. We will also explore the use of atmospheric slips and experiment with Lillstreet’s studio glazes in the soda kiln. Each student receives two shelves to store work, clay, and tools. Prerequisite: Two sessions of Soda I or instructor approval

Lidded objects come in many different shapes, sizes, and designs with the focal point landing on the lid. Learn to throw different lidded objects from jars to teapots with stylized lids that both fit the pot literally and aesthetically. Think through the pot methodically to produce a lid that is both functional and compliments the object.

From dogs and cats to horses and other wildlife, learn how to create the animal of your choosing. With fast and effective armature building, each student will construct their own animal using additive and subtractive techniques that can then be hollowed out and fired. Finalize and decorate your work with underglazes, stains, and different colorants, bringing your creation to life.

Visiting Artist Workshop Home Ceramic Studio: 101 1 Day Have you ever thought about having your own home studio? This one day workshop will teach you everything you need to know about transitioning from a community ceramics studio to your own home studio. Oil pastels, with their bright colors and gooey texture, offer artists a visceral way to create vibrant works. You will employ various techniques including optical blending, layering and creating washes to take advantage of some of the unique properties of this medium. Learn to create with gouache, also referred to as opaque watercolor. Gouache is an extremely versatile and forgiving medium, great for those looking to build on their watercolor skills. Build upon your existing watercolor skills and learn more advanced watercolor techniques while developing a personal direction in your work. Demonstrations and practical exercises will focus on the properties of paint, value, color, texture, and composition. Painting projects will be self-directed, and class discussions will allow the opportunity to discuss color choices and composition. A variety of subject matter and styles will be explored.

Learn to focus on rendering the model directly in color in either soft pastel or an alla prima painting style with oil or acrylic paints. There will be a 2-week portrait pose and a 3-week figure pose. You will investigate color relationships, the importance of relative values, and lost and found edges.

In this model class, we will start each day with a half-hour of quick poses, followed by one long pose, which will last one or two classes. The instructor will work with you on a one to one basis to refine your drawing skills to render the form and light on the human figure. All drawing media are welcome, including pastels.

Landscape Painting in the Studio 10 Weeks

Develop your own language of mark making through a series of activities structured to develop your painterly instincts. Learn to trust your intuition while generating original ideas and expressing the unconscious. Exercises will include color studies and experimentation, the use of non-traditional paint brushes, using gravity or other natural forces to move paint, adding “chance” to your creative process, and finding inspiration in sound.

Create landscape paintings using photographs and your imagination. You will learn the best way to gather reference photos and how to modify your painting for success. Composition, value, and color principles will all be discussed as you bring together an effective landscape. We will also consider how light reveals form and how to accentuate that. Saw Piercing Perfection 1 Day

Improve your saw-piercing skills by understanding the jeweler’s saw and the techniques used to pierce intricate designs in metal. Starting with a variety of lip designs, you’ll saw pierce and file copper sheet to create the base for your enamel. Visiting Artist Workshop Introduction to the Hydraulic Press 1 Day This fast-paced workshop is an introduction to using the hydraulic press to create form and texture in metal. We will experiment with embossing, pillowing, and die-cutting techniques to achieve quick and repeatable results. Each participant will make custom individual dies that can be used in limitless combinations to form metal in ways unique to the hydraulic press.

Advanced Hydraulic Press Topics: All the Bells & Whistles This workshop will concentrate on combining different forming capabilities and accessories of the hydraulic press to achieve complex forms in metal. 10 Weeks This practice-based survey course centers on the storied relationship between walking and photography. Classes will frequently meet on location at local museums/galleries as starting points for guided photo walks through various parts of the city, as well as convening in the classroom for discussion and group feedback sessions. Discover the nuances of the artist/subject relationship while you explore composition, lighting, positioning, and environment. Learn to use images in new and alternative ways through photographic collage. This class will introduce you to several techniques to combine imagery, both physically and digitally. You will gain experience in photomontage, scan objects to create 2D images, layer photographs in Photoshop, and reappropriate found imagery. Collage offers you the ability to abstract the photograph beyond the camera.

Explore printmaking and handmade books in our fully-equipped studio. Letterpress and bookbinding complement techniques such as etching, relief and screen printing. Get creative with traditional, contemporary and experimental approaches to printmaking. With generous open studio time and non-toxic inks and solvents, printmaking has something for all skill levels. Explore both classic letterpress techniques and contemporary practices on different types of presses. This technique uses movable type to create an impression on the paper when printed. Projects are designed to showcase type, color and the printed form. The material fee includes ink, newsprint and a sampling of specialty paper.

Explore contemporary and traditional methods of intaglio printmaking including line etching, aquatint and drypoint on copper plates to create an edition. Utilize etching’s distinctive qualities to produce multiples, creating beautiful handmade prints in single or multiple colors.

Learn the basic skills, tools and vocabulary of bookbinding and book arts. You will create simple folded books, pamphlets, Japanese stab bindings, accordion and Coptic books.

10 Weeks Design and create a multi-color etching. You will explore traditional intaglio methods using line etch, soft ground, and aquatint techniques. 10 Weeks Learn to silkscreen, toner-litho transfer, monoprint, and stencil on clay forms. You’ll create layered imagery for narrative or decorative purposes. Demonstrations will include printing processes and ceramic construction techniques as well as the creation of finished forms with surface depth for low or high-fire clay bodies. Learn how to make monoprints on fabric during this five week course. This experimental class encourages students to embrace play and intuition. You will be taught various immersion dye techniques, color removing, and stencil screenprinting. Work with Textile Artist in Resident, Cassie Tompkins, to develop your designs, and screenprint with deColourant, dye, and inks onto fabric.

Whether you’re repairing an old favorite or tailoring a new garment to your body, this class fits perfectly! Learn to take shirts in and jeans up; mend holes, fix hems, and sew on buttons. Color Theory with Fiber Reactive Dyes

Learn the basics of color theory and applied color mixing techniques using fiber reactive dyes. Experiments include immersion dyeing, overdyeing, ice dyeing, and Shibori as methods of adding layers of color to cloth. Leave with a variety of colorful plant-based fabric samples for future projects.

Learn a survey of techniques to make weavings from images. We will borrow techniques from several sources, including Medieval tapestry, cartooning, tapestry weave, yarn color blending, and joining techniques. Discover a wide range of natural dye techniques. We will explore various colors, tannins, and mordants on a variety of fabrics while achieving saturated color on cotton. Learn new shibori techniques, more about the mordanting processes, and the range and strength of color from dyes such as indigo, cochineal, logwood, and madder.

Are you interested in making clothing for little ones? In this course, you will learn the essential skills of sewing for children; fabric selection, pattern reading, basic sewing skills, and finishing techniques will be covered. The instructor will work with you to create a simple heirloom project such as a bonnet, bloomer or tunic (newborn to 6 years).

Learn how to needle-turn applique with precision. Our Teaching Artist will guide you through designing, cutting, basting, and needle turning your expertly finished sampler. Drawing inspiration from the folding and cutting methods of Hawaiian quilting traditions, you will explore ways to adapt this technique for a design that is uniquely you.

Discover alternative printing and dyeing techniques in this experimental workshop. You will work with found objects, styrofoam blocks, brushes, and spray bottles to create patterns on cloth. Explore markmaking, color mixing, and use MX dyes for various applications. Leave with several samples and new ways to further explore color. All materials provided.

Learn the basics of foundation paper piecing (machine stitching fabric onto paper) to enhance your quilting skills. This technique is a great solution for intricate patchwork, challenging images and perfect for utilizing your small scraps of fabric. Some fabric provided but please bring any scraps you may have.

Young artists become explorers as they learn to create fearlessly while investigating a variety of media and creative processes. We present opportunities for students to develop critical thinking skills, enhance creativity, and build confidence. Students are encouraged to discover their own artistic interests while refining technical abilities. Our classes are kept small and taught by highly skilled teaching artists.

Ages 1-3 Smocks are available, but dress for mess! A caregiver participates with the child in these classes. In order to provide the best quality time with your toddler, kindly refrain from bringing non-registered children to class.

Lil’ Artist 10 Weeks Your child will squish clay, push paint, and pile materials of different colors and textures into unique collages and paintings that record their sensory journey. Learn the basic techniques needed to make unique sculptures and great pots by hand and on the pottery wheel. Coils, slabs, and pinch pots are simple hand techniques that you will explore to form clay by hand. On the wheel, you will learn to center, pull, and trim your pots. Glazing will also be covered throughout the class, allowing you to add color to your three-dimensional works of art.

Together, kids and adults will carve out a printing clock using linocutting techniques. Bumble Bee Bells Buzzzz into Spring with your very own handmade bumble bee bell. You will learn to roll a slab, make a pinch pot, and decorate your bell by creating textures and attaching details. We’ll make big and small bees, bees of all colors like pink, blue and yellow to ring in Spring.

Private Lessons Would you prefer individualized instruction over a classroom situation? Is there a specific technique you’ve always wanted to learn but don’t have the time to commit to a 10 week class? If this is what you’ve been looking for we have some options for you to choose from. • A two-hour minimum commitment is required. • Your customized lesson can be for one person, two or three. • No previous experience necessary. • Private classes can be set up in any of our departments. • Your lesson includes open studio time on the day of your lesson only; it does not include open studio for the week.

Class Age Restrictions: All classes are for ages 16 years and older unless otherwise noted.

Tools & Materials: Students may be required to purchase a tool kit from lillstreet, or other materials in order to complete class work. Unless otherwise specified, materials will be provided for the first class session and students will receive a supply list for purchase.

Cancellations & Refunds (Please Read Carefully)

Cancellations: Classes are canceled when enrollment minimums are not reached. Students will be notified if classes are canceled and will be eligible for a full refund or class credit. Tuition credits are good indefinitely toward any classes, workshops or gallery items and are not redeemable for cash under any circumstances.

Refund Policy For Dropped Classes And Workshops: Tuition is refundable for all classes and workshops dropped more than one week prior to the session start date, minus a $40 processing fee. Classes dropped during the week prior to the start of the class session are eligible for a studio credit only (no refunds). Classes dropped during the first week of the session are eligible for a 50% studio credit (no refund). Classes dropped after the first week of the session are not eligible for a credit or refund except in cases of medical emergency. Students are responsible for notifying the lillstreet staff that they wish to drop a class or workshop. Not attending class does not constitute an official withdrawal or cancellation of tuition or fees. Visiting artist workshops and summer camps have separate cancellation policies.
