Ceramics

Lillstreet’s nationally-recognized Ceramics department offers classes that are appropriate for students of all skill levels. Students ranging from first-timers to advanced ceramicists can take advantage of our generous open studio hours while enrolled in classes such as wheelthrowing, handbuilding, sculpture, slip casting, and more. With hundreds of options for glaze combinations, a variety of firing options, and access to our state-of-the-art equipment and facilities, students are afforded every opportunity to find their way with clay.

First-Time Artist First-Time Potter 5 Weeks Dress for mess and spin the wheel to shape clay into the basic forms of mugs and bowls. Learn to work with ceramic tools and glaze your own pottery. Handbuilding will also be introduced; including pinch pots, bowls and small serving trays. Plan to purchase a clay tool kit at Lillstreet. The class fee includes one 12-pound bag of clay. Each student receives half of a shelf to store work, clay, and tools.

Low Fire in Wheel Exploration 10 Weeks Learn the unique benefits and versatility of working with Terra Cotta clay while experimenting with different types of low fire surface design, including slips, terra sigillata, and low fire glazes. Tile Making 10 Weeks

Looking for something unique to adorn your kitchen, bathroom, or fireplace? Learn to make decorative tiles from a slab of clay. We’ll teach you how to build up and carve into clay, then make a plaster mold from your tile to make multiples. We will also discuss firing and glazing. Each student receives one shelf to store work, clay, and tools. Prerequisite: Two session of handbuilding classes

Dreams, Myths & Stories in Clay 10 Weeks Bring your stories, dreams, and myths to life with hand-built clay forms. An optional, open-ended prompt is given at the start of each class to help generate ideas. Classes include the exchange of stories and ideas as well as guidance on forming, texturing, and finishing your work. In the final session, we will view and discuss each other’s work in terms of dreams, myths, or stories expressed.

Intermediate Wheelthrowing 10 Weeks Design your pottery and establish a personal aesthetic while learning intermediate techniques to make complex forms. You will explore throwing off the hump, learn how to use the spray booth, receive weekly demonstrations, and experiment with new glaze combinations to help develop your signature look. Projects range from creating sets, lidded jars, pitchers, and more. Each student receives two shelves to store work, clay, and tools. Prerequisite: Two session of Beginning/Advanced Beginning Wheelthrowing

Intermediate Handbuilding 10 Weeks You’ve mastered the handbuilding basics; now, it’s time to improve your ceramic skills while building functional and sculptural objects. Learn historical and contemporary approaches to clay, intricate carving techniques, and subtractive methods while focusing on building your aesthetic. Weekly demonstrations will teach complex techniques to manipulate clay and allow the further development of your handbuilt work.

Ceramics

Create functional or sculptural forms by exploring the fundamental techniques of handbuilding. You will learn to use slabs, create coils, make pinch pots, and glaze your work to create virtually anything you can dream up. The use of tools such as molds and the slab roller will be demonstrated. The class fee includes one 25-pound bag of clay.

Have you always wanted to sculpt figuratively but didn’t know where to start? Take this class to learn the basics of handbuilding and how it’s used to form figurative sculptures. You will progress through simple abstractions to full detailed bodies, focusing on features like eyes, mouths, hands, and hair. Learn how to coil build and free form clay into figures of your own imagination.

Soda II: Surfaces

10 Weeks

Improve your skills for making handbuilt forms while building functional and sculptural objects. Weekly demonstrations will teach more sophisticated techniques to manipulate clay and allow further development of your handbuilt work. Demonstrations will be designed to meet the specific needs of the students.

Soda firing offers a dazzling variety of surfaces both planned and unplanned for the artist to explore. Demonstrations will include an array of more advanced techniques that reveal how to achieve more refined and intentional results in the soda kiln. Participation in all stages of the process, including loading and unloading outside of class time, is expected of each student.

Each student receives two shelves to store work, clay, and tools.

Home & Garden Pottery

Decadent Vessels

10 Weeks

This independently-driven class begins each week with a potluck and group discussion about ongoing projects. Projects range from cups up to large serving bowls and wall sconces to large sectional planters. Bring your ideas to life and decorate your personal space. The instructor is on hand to guide you through your projects, problem solve and demonstrate as needed.

Learn to improve hand-built forms into elegant vessels. Various handbuilding and decoration techniques will be shown and discussed to increase the scale and ornamentation of your vessels. You will be guided through the process of adding many different physical and conceptual elements to your work to improve the overall decadence.

Each student receives two shelves to store work, clay, and tools. Prerequisite: Two years of ceramics experience

10 Weeks Experience flashes of color, textured surfaces and the excitement of unpredictable results found by utilizing the distinct atmospheric qualities of the soda kiln. Weekly demonstrations will encourage more complex forms. By using slips and glazes, soda-firing becomes accessible and more predictable. You will participate in all stages of the process, including required kiln loading and unloading outside of class time. Each student receives two shelves to store work, clay, and tools. Prerequisite: One year experience in ceramics or instructor approval

10 Weeks Delve into the rich history and bright color palette of low-fire ceramic surface decorations. Demonstrations and discussions will involve the use of terra sigillata, underglazes, slips and glazes on terra cotta. You will also learn the process of mixing glazes and slips from basic components. PolitiCLAY Speaking 10 Weeks Activist art is grounded in the act of ‘doing’ and addresses political or social issues. With the 2020 Election in mind, what does your clay say? Develop a project or plan for your clay practice that incorporates your own political voice. Collaborate with others by sharing from your own process with clay. Learn to silkscreen, toner-litho transfer, monoprint, and stencil on clay forms. You’ll create layered imagery for narrative or decorative purposes. Demonstrations will include printing processes and ceramic construction techniques as well as the creation of finished forms with surface depth for low or high-fire clay bodies.

This class will explore combining and integrating the various clay bodies in our Lillstreet arsenal. Students will construct pieces by throwing, pinching, coiling, and stripping methods creating marbled, striated, and layered surfaces left mostly unglazed. You will make your own jump rings and learn multiple ways to solder and fuse them. Nonsoldered chains, finishing techniques, and clasps will also be discussed. Electroforming is a metal plating method that slowly deposits copper on to the surface of your work to create more density and support. You will start by exploring a variety of processes of plating on copper foils, waxes, and plastics. You will then move on to more complex methods that relate to your particular interests, like jewelry making and sculpture.

Making Wearable, Sculptural Jewelry with Titanium

2 Day Champlevé is an enameling technique where cells, or recessed areas are filled with powdered glass. First-Time Bookmaking

5 Weeks

Explore both classic letterpress techniques and contemporary practices on different types of presses. This technique uses movable type to create an impression on the paper when printed. Projects are designed to showcase type, color and the printed form. The material fee includes ink, newsprint and a sampling of specialty paper.

Explore contemporary and traditional methods of intaglio printmaking including line etching, aquatint and drypoint on copper plates to create an edition. Utilize etching’s distinctive qualities to produce multiples, creating beautiful handmade prints in single or multiple colors.

Learn the basic skills, tools and vocabulary of bookbinding and book arts. You will create simple folded books, pamphlets, Japanese stab bindings, accordion and Coptic books.

5 Weeks Combine contemporary painting and printmaking techniques to create unique, mixed media monotypes. Expand them by printing with found objects to achieve greater visual depth. 5 Weeks Using stitches learned in FirstTime Bookmaking, expand your knowledge to include more complex binding patterns. We will explore compound books, flag books and long stitch with its variants. Learn to silkscreen on ceramics! We’ll use toner-litho transfers, monoprints, and stencils on clay forms to create layered imagery for narrative or decorative purposes. Demonstrations will include printing processes and ceramic construction techniques as well as how to create finished forms with surface depth for low or high fire clay bodies. Ceramics students enrolled in the previous session can keep your shelves in the ceramics department.

Whether you sew, print, dye, weave, embroider, knit, or crochet, we have the perfect class for you. Our student population is diverse- from professional artists and entrepreneurs to those who enjoy working with their hands and want to explore something new. Our teaching artists will guide you as you turn your project ideas into one-of-a-kind completed works of functional, decorative, or fine art. We welcome and support all bodies and gender expressions. First-Time Artists First-Time Sewing 5 Weeks If youâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;re intimidated by threading a machine or straying from the straight stitch, join our club. Learn how to design and complete your own cross stitch patterns. You will learn the basics of counted cross stitch and graduate to working with a printed cross stitch pattern. Sculptural needle felting is simply stabbing loose wool with a needle repeatedly which, effectively, knots the fibers together into a semi-solid state. Screen Printing on Fabric II: Printing with Dyes

5 Weeks

Whether you’re repairing an old favorite or tailoring a new garment to your body, this class fits perfectly! Learn to take shirts in and jeans up; mend holes, fix hems, and sew on buttons. Come to class the first day with your uncompleted mending and alterations projects. We’ll complete them together with necessary demonstrations.

Once you’ve honed your screen printing skills, try your hand at printing with dyes. This class focuses on the preparation of fabric and mixing of colors, with some new printing techniques. Printing with dyes allows color and image to soak into the fabric rather than rest on the surface, making it great for printing on silks or delicate, natural fibers.

Indigo & Arashi “Storm” Shibori 5 Weeks Arashi Shibori is a resist technique that yields diagonal patterns. Start with basic Arashi wrapping on PVC poles; then create more complex patterns with stitching (Nui Shibori), including variations, such as spider web, willow shibori, and bo-maki shibori. Students provide natural fabrics, e.g., cotton, linen, silk, and bamboo, after the first class. Bring rubber gloves for indigo dyeing.

During this workshop, you will paint with resists onto silk pocket squares, followed by painting with dyes. This is a great way to get color and designs onto fabric fast and efficiently. Think of stained glass. You will be provided with two silk pocket squares. If you’d like to paint onto something else please make sure it is 100% silk.

Explore the history and techniques of indigo dye. We will apply shibori resist techniques to silk and cotton, learn how to build an indigo bath, and see visual resources and samples of this exceptional dye. Some sample fabric will be provided, but please bring any pre-washed natural fibers you’d like to dye. Dress for mess.

5 Weeks Strengthen your individual voice and take your art to the next level in this multi-disciplinary class! Using a variety of art-making materials, improve your technical skills with lessons focused on figure drawing, perspective, and composition. Handbuilding & Wheelthrowing 5 Weeks Learn the basic techniques needed to make unique sculptures and great pots by hand and on the pottery wheel. Coils, slabs, and pinch pots are simple hand techniques that you will explore to form clay by hand. On the wheel, you will learn to center, pull, and trim your pots. Glazing will also be covered throughout the class, allowing you to add color to your three-dimensional works of art.

5 Weeks Examine insects, plants, and other natural life in this illustration class. A variety of drawing and illustration skills will be taught, including proportion, perspective, line, value, shading, and stippling. Your sketchbooks will be filled with everyday ideas and unique inspiration.

School’s Out Camp Ages 6-13 Why stay at home when you can have fun at Lillstreet making art? Campers will spend the day painting, drawing, printing, learning to build with clay, and sculpting colorful works of art.

Discover the proper skills to create successful drawings such as line, value, and composition as you explore a different painting medium each week. You will learn methods of application and pick the appropriate surfaces for working with acrylic paint, pastel, ink, watercolor, and tempera paint. Pinch Pot Snowman Keep your hands warm in our studios this winter by making snowmen out of clay instead of snow. This snowman will stand the test of time! Create a variety of characters to build a family of many shapes and sizes using clay and colorful glazes.

XOXO Mugs & Plates Make the perfect handmade ceramic Valentine’s Day mug and plate to gift to your sweetie. You will use handbuilding and molds to create your pieces, then decorate and design your creation using stamps, glazes, and more. Clay pieces will be glazed and ready to pick up in time for Valentine’s Day.

Inspired by Wayne Thiebaud, students will design and handbuild a two-piece clay set that looks just like a real cake! You will create your own toppings and learn to attach the decorations and frost your cake using glazes for the finishing touch. Once pieces are ready to be picked up, you can store keepsakes in the cake box or give it as a gift.

Easter Bunny Candy Dishes Hippity, Hoppity into this fun holidaythemed workshop! Learn to make candy dishes using clay to fill with jelly beans and chocolate eggs. You will learn how to attach bunny ears and legs onto the bowls to give them a fun look and glaze your pieces at the end.

Seder Plates Create your own set of plates just in time for Passover. Work together with your family on your heirloom plates using personal imagery and text. Private Lessons Would you prefer individualized instruction over a classroom situation? Is there a specific technique you’ve always wanted to learn but don’t have the time to commit to a 10 week class? If this is what you’ve been looking for we have some options for you to choose from. • A two-hour minimum commitment is required. • Your customized lesson can be for one person, two or three. • No previous experience necessary. • Private classes can be set up in any of our departments. • Your lesson includes open studio time on the day of your lesson only; it does not include open studio for the week.

Class Age Restrictions: All classes are for ages 16 years and older unless otherwise noted.

Tools & Materials: Students may be required to purchase a tool kit from lillstreet, or other materials in order to complete class work. Unless otherwise specified, materials will be provided for the first class session and students will receive a supply list for purchase.

Cancellations & Refunds (Please Read Carefully)

Cancellations: Classes are canceled when enrollment minimums are not reached. Students will be notified if classes are canceled and will be eligible for a full refund or class credit. Tuition credits are good indefinitely toward any classes, workshops or gallery items and are not redeemable for cash under any circumstances. Refund Policy For Dropped Classes And Workshops: Tuition is refundable for all classes and workshops dropped more than one week prior to the session start date, minus a $40 processing fee. Classes dropped during the week prior to the start of the class session are eligible for a studio credit only (no refunds). Classes dropped during the first week of the session are eligible for a 50% studio credit (no refund). Classes dropped after the first week of the session are not eligible for a credit or refund except in cases of medical emergency. Students are responsible for notifying the lillstreet staff that they wish to drop a class or workshop. Not attending class does not constitute an official withdrawal or cancellation of tuition or fees. Visiting artist workshops and summer camps have separate cancellation policies.
