Meet with us Donald L. Moore. The consul gives you some useful tips for your trip Cuisine, Music, Art. And then you go to a bar and feel more or less like being interviewed by the barman. That’s Naples according to the US Consul Donald L. Moore, who is leaving the city for another office in Alabama. But for sure Mr. Moore will stay forever in the Neapolitans’ hearts with his solemnity and a playfulness that seems all Neapolitan. Let’s just think about his hilarious video against the Maya Prophecy that you can still see on YouTube. His Neapolitan style of life can be explained only with his profound knowledge of the local traditions and history. Which is your first memory of Naples? It seems you have already been here about 20 years ago before coming back as Consul. Yes, I came to Naples in 1986, at that time I was a US Naval Officer. It was my first experience abroad. My very first memory is linked to a restaurant where I had “Insalata Caprese”, it was delicious! And then I remember going to the Solfatara with some colleagues from the Navy and spending the night in Pozzuoli. Also, I will always remember my first New Year’s Eve here: I was with some friends and we were heading to a nightclub, but were caught up in a traffic jam for 6 hours! At the end we simply had a “graffa” and a coffee in a bar on Via Posillipo. continued...

WHEN IN NAPLES

Interview to the General Consul Donald L. Moore.

Confessions of an American: “Music, food, and art. They made me fall in love with Naples”. Which are the main differences that you noticed in looking at Naples as Consul and as “tourist”? Actually, I have never been a tourist in Naples, I experienced the city only as a resident, so I don’t know how it is to look at it as a tourist. However, I showed my friends and some VIPs around and they noticed some exterior improvements such as many pedestrian zones, from Piazza del Plebiscito to the Vomero Hill, the historic city center and the new underground stations with improved transportation. I think the city nowadays is much more developed, both socially and culturally. As Consul I clearly see the city’s cultural evolution: 25 years ago there was no trace of a Contemporary Art Museum, now there are two. The Capodimonte Museum was renovated and now is beautiful. S. Carlo adopted a new cultural policy opening it up to young people and working to bring the traditional music to a sector of the public that was not interested in it before. Also, many national and international cultural events have taken place in these years. Obviously there are always other things to do and to improve. I know that many Neapolitans complain about their city, but comparing it to 25 years ago, I feel that the improvement is undeniable.

What can a Consulate do for them in case they needed help? The Consulate helps all Americans within its consular district whether they are living here permanently or just visiting as tourists. We assist them in case of emergency and for administrative issues. The services we provide include passport issuance, assistance in case of personal belongings theft, hospitalization or even death and arrest. We want to facilitate the bureaucratic processes, making them feeling the support of the American government also abroad. For more information, and to know how to contact our offices I suggest visiting our website: http:// naples.usconsulate.gov/acs.html Let’s go back to the city. Could you tell us which places you consider the most beautiful to visit? First of all, the Duomo, one of the most beautiful churches I have ever seen, it is even more so if you have the chance to visit it during New Year’s Eve Mass. Then, Via Caracciolo is one of the most charming streets of the world: having in one view the City Park, the famous Mount Vesuvio, Castel dell’Ovo, Capri island, ships and sailing boats passing, everything surrounded by the coast… it’s breathtaking! On Saturdays and Sundays, I suggest motorcycling along Via Caracciolo and Via A.

Being a tourist, wandering around the city is beautiful. However, what kind of suggestions would you give to Americans for a happy and safe holiday? Watch out for the cars and motorscooters! Walking along the streets of Naples is fascinating, but sometimes crossing them may become a real struggle!

Manzoni to enjoy the fresh air and the panorama. Also, you cannot miss the Capodimonte Museum, S. Elmo Castle, the catacombs and the underground of Naples: a unique experience. Maybe you can suggest also a monument or a less known place which is not included in the touristic guidebooks?

02

The stairs. Naples is full of stairs which bring you from the coast and the city center up to the hill, offering an incredible panorama as you walk through. I love going up and down these ancient stairs especially on Sunday mornings.

Well, Ferry-boat by Pino Daniele, for its mixture of American and Neapolitans words and its in-between style. I must say that also songs by Marcella Bella remind me of Naples, because I used to listen to them while driving here 25 years ago.

Drink. Do you prefer American coffee or espresso? I like them both. In the US I prefer having American coffee, but when I am here I cannot resist having an espresso. Americans usually wonder at the wide choice of coffee Neapolitans have here. They ask for strong or long coffee, or “macchiato”, coffee with a little milk, or in cold cup, in plastic cup… Which one’s your favorite? Yes, it is true! In Naples you cannot go to a bar without exactly knowing how you want your coffee and also if you want still or sparkling water, because in Naples they always give you water with your coffee. It is like being interviewed. But, I usually have a regular espresso. Let’s keep on talking about cuisine, if you don’t mind. Which is your favorite Neapolitan dish? Parmigiana di melanzane, definitely. And then I also like very much the mixture of fried fish. The one thing I don’t understand is why when you eat in a restaurant or small trattoria today they don’t serve you that good local wine I used to drink 25 years ago. It is a pity, the local wine was so good! I heard that when you were a university student, you were also a Dj. So out of curiosity, I would like you to suggest two songs, an American and an Italian one, which you would associate to Naples and why.

On the other way round, I don’t know which American song I would associate to Naples, but I think the blues of John Lee Hooker and the rock of Jimi Hendrix would be a good match. What do you miss most about USA and what will you miss about Naples? I miss sitting in a café where I would read the newspaper while sipping coffee. Here, instead, you drink coffee while standing and chatting. About Naples, I think I will miss the fact that everything is very informal, you can chat with people you don’t know and you can find those trattorias and family-run restaurants where the atmosphere is very lively and the specialties are home-made. What do you think about Neapolitans? I believe Neapolitans should be prouder of their city, of the resources they have: artistic, archeological and historical. Commitments to improve it are absolutely correct, but maybe if they truly realized the value of Naples they could better communicate it to the outside world! If I may, I would also suggest Neapolitans have more flowers on their balconies; as everybody knows I am passionate about gardening and I think flowers and trees also contribute to the beauty and the improvement of a city.

WHEN IN NAPLES Some tourists may find time to visit places outside the city of Naples. Which ones do you think should be visited? Of course, the most visited places outside the city are Sorrento and the islands of Ischia, Capri and Procida: they really deserve their wonderful reputation and praise. But, honestly, I would consider the idea of climbing Vesuvio, hard but worth it! Without going too far from Naples, tourists can visit the archeological sites of

Cuma and the “Antro della Sibilla” led by a guide to hear the legends and ancient stories of these places. Could you give three suggestions to American and non-American tourists? First of all, stay here for at least one week to appreciate and visit all the things the city offers. Then, plan your holiday trip very well, look for the possible means of transportation, the timetable and so on: sometimes it may be very confusing and hard

to go from one point of the city to another! Finally, indulge in those unique little streets full of the smell of local specialties. You definitely cannot perceive the atmosphere and the Neapolitan culture without trying the local cuisine so appreciated worldwide. In conclusion, some weeks ago Naples hosted the America’s Cup World Series. Do you think this is another sign of the strong ties between America and Italy? Above

Meetings and event in the city

When the music is on the stairs

The Summer in Naples. A little bit of Verdi and a lot of folklore. With a taste of photography and visual arts

Mandolins playing Verdi, ethno-jazz concerts with some Arabic influences and a lot of art. Who is in Naples this summer will not be bored. In Campania there are a lot of events, free or quite cheap, that will provide the opportunity to have a lot of fun. For the one among you who are in love with the art of photography go to the Pan, one of the most amazing art galleries of Naples, via dei Mille. On display 55 works of Joel-Peter Witkin American photographer who revisits works like those of Velázquez and Manet mixing ancient and modern thanks to an interesting view of the world. And talking about the world what’s better than some international music? Till the 3rd of August in the amazing setting of Villa Doria d’Angri, in via Petrarca 80, on stage the performance of the International Festival of Chamber Music: “Nuits d’été à Pausillipe”, the right way to hear some

wonderful classical music. Always distinctive sounds but in this case very folkloristic, to those who find themselves near the historical center of Novi Velia, in the province of Salerno, where at the end of August will take place the Festival of the “Ancient Sounds”, an event that wants to bring a piece of the past to the present day thanks to instruments of the middle age period. And what about Naples stairs, loved also by the Consul Donald Moore? Well, to watch a masterpiece of the Italian cinema and to sip a drink with the sky as your ceiling search for the events of “Scale d’estate” on Facebook, every night on the stairs of San Giuseppe dei Nudi and those of La Pedamentina, wonderful local tastes, music and theatre, everything you couldn’t expect to see on some very steep steps.

all, do you believe in the possibility of similar events in the future? Well, I am very glad that Naples hosted such a prestigious event, even though I would like to specify that it is an independent international sports competition which is unrelated to our Consulate or the US government. I am sure there will be many other events like this in the future, because the city is improving and demonstrating its international character.

Naples is really so full of stairs and steps. It seems something strange to say but actually it’s true. There are actually 135 stairs, and almost 70 flights of steps. Since history the city is characterized by their long pedestrian paths that go from the hills toward the sea and back, crossing Naples in every way possible. It seems that the older ones were born to reach churches, castles and the harbor. The “Pedamentina” stairs have more or less 414 steps that go from the Certosa di San Martino(a former monastery complex of the 1300) toward the city downtown. Nobody knows the number of steps of one of the older stairs known, “La calata di San Francesco” that goes from the highest part of the residential district of the Vomero to Corso Vittorio Emanuele, one of the main road of the city. Our suggestion? Wear sneakers and start to explore.

AROUND AND ABOUT

Green Life: A little Tour of the city

Over 52 little parks and gardens The Virgiliano one or the Capodimonte Woods. Foot by foot discover every niche and corner of the most beautiful public parks in Naples. 3.398.550. This is the number of square meters of “green” in the city of Naples. Fifty-two little parks and gardens. Chiaia, among the different city districts is the greenest one. Thanks to the “Villa comunale”, that goes from Piazza della Repubblica to the Piazza della Vittoria. This garden, of 110’000 square meters, was built in the 1780 by Carlo Vanvitelli, the son of the most famous Luigi, the architect of the Caserta Royal Palace. Inside this park there is the zoological station Anton Dohrn with its Aquarium, the oldest of all Europe. Going towards Posillipo, then, you can find the Virgiliano Parks.

But pay attention. This is not where you can find the tomb of the famous poets Virgilio. That is the Vergiliano, at Piedigrotta. Just a letter of difference and two tombs of very famous writers. In effect in the Vergiliano one you can find not only Virgilio’s grave but Leopardi’s too. Not a garden but a huge park. It’s the one of the Camaldoli, 1milion of square meters of green, with already endangered plants and animals.

A veritable “Dog Museum”.

The first one in all Europe

You can walk among wonderful Chestnuts in search of the notorious Peregrine Falcon, renowned for its speed that reaches over 332 kilometers (200 mph) during its hunting stoop. And if 1 million of square meters for you are not enough then the Capodimonte Woods are even bigger. It was the Borbone’s hunting reserves. Even though gossips tell us that it was more of a love nest. Actually a colossal love nest. It’s the garden of Palace of Capodimonte, the Museum where you can see paintings by Botticelli, Bellini, Brueghel, Caravaggio and Titian. But talking about parks and garden we have seen all the biggest ones. And what about the littlest one? Opened only in the 2008, the littlest garden is the one of The Declaration of the Rights of Man and of the Citizen. In spite of its powerful name this park it is only 900 square meters and it’s situated in the Vomero. But these are just some of the great variety of parks and garden that you can find in the city. To know all of them you have just to go to the Town hall website, where all the 52 green are listed.

In English you can say “Woof” in Italian you say “Foof”. What are we talking about? Of dogs of course. In Mondragone, near Caserta you can find the “Foof” the first European Dog Museum that shows and tells the past, the present and the future of man’s best friend: the dog. From God Anubis, to the stars’ pets, in the exhibition you can back over 35 million years of canine history until you get to Albo, the Sony dog-robot, who plays fetch, wags his tail and barks like a real puppy waiting to be pampered by the unsuspecting visitors who passes by him. At Foof you can learn all about the best dog-stars (Lassie, Beethoven, Hatchi) and about the breeds that you can find all around the world. And then there is the nursery. Behind some glasses protected by curtains Foof have sheltered the smaller cubs, still lactating from their mothers. A peek is a must; you have never seen anything tenderer. So the Foof there are even dogs in the flesh? That’s for sure. Indeed. Outside the exhibition halls there is a large space that serves as a kennel and training school. “We founded the museum of the dog – tells us Gino Pellegrino because we love animals. So we really wanted to put people in contact with the dogs”.

B2B:Take a Time Travel with an App

How to earn mixing History and Technology You can re-enact what happened in Pompeii on August 79 A.D. Discover Pompeii and his History by App. Some young entrepreneurs have created “Back to Pompei” an app that shows you what happened in Pompeii that fateful day of the eruption in 79 A.C. In a few days one of the most terrible eruptions ever seen will completely destroy the city, but the citizens do not know it yet. A shopkeeper tries to convince you to buy his merchandise. Some children are playing in the streets. The app is an experiment of augmented reality created by Leonardo Lettieri and Rocco Palladino. “Back to” is used with smartphones and tablet but it’s not just an app. It’s a time travel. It virtually reconstructs the archaeological site where you are at the moment, and it gives you the opportunity to interact with the environment. You can talk to people who have populated these places hundreds of centuries before and even ask them questions. Just be careful. There is a group of women who are gossiping and you can overhear them. They’re wondering why there is so much smoke on the Vesuvius. It’s the 24th of August. The year 79 A.D.

And in fact the Foof dogs can also be adopted, the range of breeds varies from moment to moment. There are stray dogs or the pedigree ones. But all dogs are pampered and cared for, even the most difficult. “Often there are some dogs with behavioral problems. But we do not give up, we immediately begin the recovery phase and I must say that the results are fantastic. Ultimately the most important thing is to love them. And we do”.

Brahms, Mozart, Caijkovskij and Chaplin

The Ravello Festival, the must for the music lovers

Who has never been in Ravello cannot even imagine what he’s missing. The 2013 edition of the “Festival di Ravello” sees on stage the biggest Italian and international artists of all times. Why loose the opportunity to hear some classical music made in Belfast?

On August 2, The City of Belfast Youth Orchestra directed by Paul McBride will delight the audience with music by Brahms and Haydn. On August 4, instead it will be the turn of Chaplin, obviously not in the flesh but sound tracked by the live music of the Orchestra italiana del Cinema directed by Timothy Brock. Two authors instead meet the August 8: Marcello Fois, one of the most popular contemporary authors read Boccaccio. We had promised events at dawn and here they are. Literally. Saturday the 10th and Sunday the 11th of August, the Philharmonic Orchestra of Salerno “Giuseppe Verdi” directed by Alvise Casellati, will perform Mozart, Beethoven, Weber, Verdi

and Caijkovskij starting at 4:45 in the morning. In this way they’ll allow to the audience the opportunity to enjoy at the same time two sublime shows, their concert and the first light of day. But these are just some tips. The Ravello Festival has something for all tastes.

The Capone & BungtBangt: the band that plays with junks

When the music is Greener then ever Playing with forks, spoons, ladles and garbage cans it’s possible. It’s the music according to Capone & BungtBangt, the Neapolitan ecoperformers that turn junks in musical instruments. The most sustainable and eco-friendly band in circulation, and their leader Maurizio Capone have recently reached the peak of visitors with their latest single, “Around the World”, a cover of the great Daft Punk. But Capone and his musician are not a cover band, they in effect plays using gas rings, Pvc pipes, and several different tools. In this way a real orchestra is ready. And then it’s just a succession, of music, dancing, and singing. All that matters is not to surrender to banality and Capone & BungtBangt do not even know what it is. Armed with their wits and talent they know how to have a good time and how to entertain the audience. But that’s not just it. Do you want to know how to build an eco-instrument using your junk? You can take part to Maurizio Capone’s workshops and learn how to make a guitar out of common objects: lids, cans, bags. Everything is useful according to Capone to make music. To know when and where there will be the next Ecoperformances, or workshops you can visit the website: http://www.caponebungtbangt.com and if you have not the time to follow his workshops you can at least watch Capone’s tutorials online on www.comesuonailcaos.it

NIGHT LIFE & SHOPPING

From Vesuvius at midnight to the Underground city

History and legends are intertwined in the amazing Neapolitan nights Wear jackets and sneakers. You walk, meet, and talk, you eat and drink and of course you live up.

Summer nights are often very hot and crowded. Probably you’ll hole up in some nightclubs or on one of the chalets on the waterfront. But why to do always the same things? Looking in the right places

you can go home having experienced a different Naples from the one on the guides. Even better if that is the Naples by night, made of mysteries and history. This is the case of the “Museo del sottosuolo” in Piazza Cavour. “The Underground museum is explains the director Luca Cuttitta in one of more than 800 underground caverns of the city. During the war, this space was an air raid shelter, in antiquity was a quarry”. During the visits, strictly nocturnal, the museum will retrace 2400 years of history since the underground Naples represented the gates of hell until when 600 people were sheltered here against the bombings of World War II and spent time

sewing or playing cards. But speaking of hell one cannot avoid to make a visit to the most hellish place of Naples, Mount Vesuvius. On the night of August the 10th, association Sirecoop and

Umberto Massimiliano, guide of the most famous volcano in the world, will take visitors on the top of Vesuvius to observe together the shooting stars which are said to fall on the night of Saint Laurence. Be careful, the organizers advised to wear sweaters and sneakers, but against the chill of the night you can find some heat with some brandy typical of the place, which you could sip while you can admire the wonderful panorama overlooking the Gulf to the Sorrento Peninsula and beyond Capri. For info contact 081/6336763 for visiting Mount Vesuvius and check out the website www.ilmuseodelsottosuolo.com for info about The Underground Museum.

A link to the past: a timeless passion.

Helmet. Steady. Go.

Yes we know. Not everywhere is necessary to wear a helmet when you go on your motorcycle. But in Italy is required by the law. Nonetheless you can be fashionable when you wear one. This is the idea of Massimo Lonigro, Neapolitan stylist of “Fashion Helmet”. “You mustn’t – says Lonigro – wear a boring helmet. You have to choose the most fabulous helmet you can. The one who tells others who you are, and what you want. Personally? I want to be stylish. So I came up with the idea to create fashionable helmet”. The next Fashion Helmet collection, showed even at the most famous runaways, has something vintage in it. You can wear the Grace Kelly one. Blue and White, with matching bag, scarf and gloves. Instead if you are the Paris Hilton type there is the Golden Collection. Polka-dot or stripes you can choose. All in gold and black, or gold and white. It doesn’t matter if you are a woman or a man. Nor it matters how old are you. The important is to be pop and lavish. “But you know – consider Lonigro – the true style for the true biker s the Steve McQueen’s one: just leather and stripes. Then we have created the aviator one and the Italian one”. And if you want to be chic and funny you can choose the Fluo or the ethnic patterns. Or if you feel like an American hero there is the Capitan American collection. You just have to choose what helmet will suit you better.

THE CHILDLIKE EMPIRE

Let’s guess: Who will be the next Robert De Niro?

Actors Studio style for kids. It is the job made by the Company “La Mansarda – Teatro dell’Orco”

An acting school that teaches to children how to become great artists. The youngest of them are just 3 years old. The older ones are 16. “We are inspired – tells the director Roberta Sandias - by Copeau and Mejerchol’d. And, of course, Stanislavsky. It is impressive how many of our students are now quite important actors.

Besides in Italy we are the first ones to do such a thing”. A little bit of History, a lot of fun and even more theatre. This is the recipe of this amazing and original theatre that you can find in Caserta (more or less 20 miles from Naples), and that every season stages amazing free comedies and dramas. “The younger ones stage

pieces taken from the Italian “Commedia dell’Arte”, and Goldoni. When they’re teenagers they start playing dramas by Shakespeare and Molière. The older ones, instead, have a wider range of tests and periods. From the contemporary to the most difficult plays. It’s not a game. They’re here to learn. For them to act it’s a job”. Their use of voices and bodies is amazing. They are cute as buttons but they act as Al Pacino, and they sing as Barbra Streisand. The Laboratories are for the most part permanents but there are some lessons that your children can follow. And if this is not the case, well you can always have a nice evening looking a show from the next Italian actors. Some of them will become really famous. It’s a bet.

Born to read At the Pan Museum the no-profit association “Mille e una storia” volunteers teach children to love books, to read and to fly with their fantasy. About three days a week, organize collective readings, animate and mimed, often to music for children ranging from zero to ten years. You can also take part in the “Scambialibro”, a book-sharing for children. It brings a book that you want to exchange; you put it in a gigantic big book, and take up another in return. For all the details and dates of the meetings you can visit the site of both Pan, or the facebook site of the association “Mille e una Storia”. It could be the ideal opportunity for your kids to make new friends.

When the children are the critics

Giffoni, the Cinema cradle In the province of Salerno, in the municipality of Giffoni Valle Piana, children from all over the world become film critics every summer. It is the magic spell of the Giffoni Film Festival.

The 2013 edition saw, as every year, international stars and VIPs come here to meet with the young critics, about 3000 young people from the age of three to twenty who come from over 50 countries around the world. Among the guests of the past Susan Sarandon, Jim Carrey.

12

This year, there have been MIra and Paul Sorvino, Giancarlo Giannini, Sacha Baron Coen. An all-star cast in a small town of just 12,000 inhabitants. But there is nothing to be surprised. Giffoni in his 43 years of experience has been gained, with strokes of takes and films, the reputation of the best youth film festival. With so many previews and news. Cinema Master class for children and prizes for the actors and director, assigned by the children-critics. And although the days of the festival have passed remains to visit what is now called the Giffoni Experience. The places of the festival and beyond. Because now Giffoni is pure cinema 365 days a year. A cinema fit for children, of course.
