Wedding trends for 2012 If you’re unsure about the finer details for your big day, or just need a bit of inspiration; Luxury Wedding Planner June Dixon from Prenuptial Angel has put together some of the hottest trends in the wedding world for 2012.

• Cake Pops – For brides not wanting a traditional wedding cake, Cake Pops will be a popular alternative alongside the ever popular cupcakes. • Mismatch Bridesmaids Dresses – Not all your bridesmaids will look great in the same style, length or, colour of dress. Why not let the bridesmaids chose their own dress that complements the theme or wedding colours you have chosen. • Lace Wedding Dresses – The fashion trend that was started by Kate Middleton last year remains prominent with brides in 2012. This year we will see a lot of open or low back designs making this trend ultra romantic and sexy.

4 LIME MAGAZINE 2012

• Red Wedding Dresses – Not one for the shy B2B, red wedding dresses may be a big trend for 2012. Queen of bridal wear Vera Wang showcased a collection entirely of various shades of red recently at New York Bridal week. • Bows –Bows have been very dominant recently on bridal gowns; however if you do not want such a statement piece on your dress you can opt to incorporate bows into the theme of your wedding – from your invitations to your menus or even your cake. • Blush Pink and Grey Theme – If you are looking for a colour scheme for your big day that will be romantic and eye catching all at the same time; Blush pink and grey will be a popular colour for this wedding season.

• Alternative Bouquet – A jewelled bouquet is a great way to add the ‘wow’ factor to your outfit. It will last forever and can also add a sentimental touch to your bouquet by incorporating pieces of jewellery from loved ones. • Cage Veils – If you want something different from the traditional long veil, the cage veil is the perfect solution. It is glamorous, easy and light to wear and if you are a bride on a budget why not make your own. • Everything Vintage – This romantic and timeless theme is perfect for the bride wishing to add a creative edge to the day. Apart from wearing a vintage dress you can add a vintage touch to your day with the decor: dried flowers, doilies, picture frames and mason jars are a few ways to help transform your reception. For a vintage twist on a Candy Buffet check out www.candycampers.co.uk to have your guests served retro sweets from a camper van.

Diana Ross & Toni Braxton groove into Saint Lucia Jazz Ross and Braxton replace Lionel Richie who has cited other engagements

PSaint Lucia Jazz – the resenting sponsor for

Saint Lucia Tourist Board is thrilled to announce the introduction of iconic and legendary diva, singer, record producer and actress Diana Ross to close out the 21st edition of Saint Lucia Jazz. Additional star power to Saint Lucia Jazz is also coming with the inclusion of Grammy award winner, singersongwriter, Toni Braxton who joins accomplished South African trumpeter Hugh Masekela and the WESPE POU AYITI

PROJECT on the final day of the event.

The new entries reignite the Jazz festival line-up following the withdrawal of Lionel Richie, who cited his unavailability in order to pursue other professional opportunities, the timing of which clashes with the dates of Saint Lucia Jazz. Richie’s cancellation of his appearance in Saint Lucia on May 13th is one of 15 others during the month of May. The artiste remains very apologetic regarding this cancellation and is working with Saint Lucia to manage the public relations surrounding this. Tourism Director Louis Lewis says, “While we were disheartened at the withdrawal of Lionel Richie, we acknowledge that this goes with the territory in the music industry. On the flip side, we are delighted to announce the additions of Diana Ross – a legend in her own right and songstress Toni Braxton, a multiple Grammy winner. Diana Ross has sold more than 100

million records worldwide and is the recipient of the 2012 Grammy Awards, Lifetime Achievement Award. She garnered fame as the lead singer of the legendary Motown group ‘The Supremes’ during the 1960s. Ross began a solo career in the 1970s that has included successful ventures into film and Broadway. Billboard magazine has named her the “Female Entertainer of the Century and in 1993, the Guinness Book of World Records declared Diana Ross the most successful female music artist in history due to her success in the United States and United Kingdom for having more hits than any female artiste in the charts with a career total of 18 number one records in the United States. Toni Braxton has sold over 40 million records worldwide, won seven American Music Awards and five Billboard Music Awards. This soulful R&B artiste first topped the Billboard 200 with her 1993 self-titled debut album and continued that streak with her second studio album Secrets, which spawned the number-one hits “You’re Makin’ Me High” and “UnBreak My Heart”. In 2009, Braxton returned to the spotlight with “Yesterday”, a #12 R&B hit which serves as the first single off her new album Pulse, released on May 4, 2010, which debuted at #1 on Billboard R&B Album Chart. Other musical heavy weights for Saint Lucia Jazz 2012 include: 5 time

Grammy winning artiste Ziggy Marley – the son of iconic reggae legend Bob Marley; jazz aficionado Joshua Redman; hit R&B song writer turned performer and soulful songstress Keri Hilson; pop and gospel king Kirk Franklin and hip-hop phenom Melanie Fiona among others. A slue of Saint Lucia’s leading musical masterminds like Luther Francois, Ronald ‘Boo’ Hinkson, Derek Yarde Project and others complement the cast. Reception venues Yabout your perfect

WHAT YOU NEED TO KNOW ou’ve been dreaming

reception venue for as long as you can remember and now finally, as you stand in the Grand Hall of the Country Estate, you fell like your dreams are turning into reality...... However before you put your deposit down and sign on the dotted line there are a few things to ask..... 1. Hire Cost Make sure that you are fully aware of the total cost of hiring the venue (including the VAT). Some

10 LIME MAGAZINE 2012

venue hire fees do not include the usage of tables, chairs, dance floor and PA system etc. Make sure that your contract includes everything that you have negotiated in the hire fee. 2. Catering Options Some venues require you to use their in-house caterers or to choose from a small list of “approved” vendors. Check the catering options with the venue and also whether their caterers are able to produce a menu based around Caribbean or African cuisine if this is something you desire. 3. Restrictions on decorations Many venues have them, but rules vary widely from place to place.

Common restrictions include: no open flame (or no flame whatsoever), no tape or tacks on the walls, or no confetti. When linens are provided, some halls will prohibit the use of pins. Ask if the hall can provide any decorations themselves, especially around holidays. 4. Corkage Fee If the liquor is to flow freely at your wedding, you’ll save an immense amount of money by bringing your own. Check with the venue to see if they charge a corkage fee if you supply your own alcohol. Some venues prohibit this and require you to buy from them. You’ll want to be crystalclear on the fine print regarding alcohol before you commit to a venue.

5. Cake-Cutting Fee As surprising as it sounds, some venues will charge a cake cutting fee if your wedding cake is not made in-house. So if you are planning to have you r wedding cake made by an external vendor, make sure you will not incur any additional fees for doing so. A Few Other Questions... How many power outlets are there and where are they located? What kind of climate control is available? Check the kitchen. Does it look clean, roomy and suitable for your caterer to work from? The recently relocated Blue Elephant is known as one of London’s most iconic Thai restaurants. After as short walking distance from the stunning Imperial Wharf; my guest and I were ready to venture in our culinary experience. On entry the restaurant boasted breathtaking decor and resembled much of the famous Bangkok palace, the Saran Rom. To drink we started with a traditional Mai Thai cocktail and soon after we began the first course of the highly recommended tasting menu. To start we had Foie Gras in tamarind sauce, emerald chicken along with a recipe from the past; minced prawns, chicken and sweet spices stuffed in a golden taro pastry, accompanied by its own special sauce and Dim Sim; Parcels of minced pork, shrimps and crab meat steamed in a bamboo basket. The presentation was authentic and showed fine attention to detail. After another cocktail, we went in on the main course which included grilled lobster, simmered lamb shanks cooked in coconut milk, homemade yellow curry paste with fresh organic turmeric, sweet potato, served with roti. Jul - 27 October 2012 POP! Design Culture and Fashion Fashion and Textile Museum celebrates the impact of music, art and celebrity on 20th-century fashion, from Rock ‘n’ Roll to Punk From the poodle skirts and embellished leathers of the rockers, the cool styling of the Mods, the high baroque of Psychedelia and the kitsch glamour of 1970s retro, this exhibition celebrates the time when British popular culture first captivated the world. The exhibition POP! DESIGN • CULTURE • FASHION showcases the influence of Pop culture on several design

mediums from 1955 to 1976, including record covers and packaging by Pop artists such as Andy Warhol, Peter Blake and Richard Hamilton, and the work of fashion designers like Mary Quant, Vivienne Westwood, John Stephen and Betsey Johnson, design director of the leading New York boutique of the era. Pop graphics will be explored, from the British psychedelic artwork of Hapshash and the Coloured Coat, and the posters of the American West Coast rock venues in San Francisco, to the work of Martin Sharp for underground magazine OZ. The influence of Heinz Eidelmann’s design for the Beatles film Yellow

Submarine on late 1960s design will be touched on, as well as the work of ‘Mr Freedom’ fashion designers Pamla Motown and Jim O’Connor, and the early 1970s work of fashion and textile designer Miss Mouse, aka Rae SpenceCullen. Throughout, furniture, original posters, graphics and promotional materials will help to set the scene while an “I’m Backing Britain” display will create a dramatic centrepiece. The exhibition will also highlight the casual throwaway nature of much Pop design, from the paper furniture and Union Jack clothing of ‘Swinging London’ to the late 1960s American vogue for paper dresses, to the tin badges, machine-embroidered patches and printed t-shirts of the early 1970s. Asgar’s distinguished celebrity clientele includes supermodels Cindy Crawford and Twiggy as well as Bollywood A List stars such as one of the world’s most beautiful women Aishwarya Rai Bachchan. In this interview Asgar talks fame grabbing hairstyles, this season’s hottest looks and bridal hair.

Asgar with Bollywood superstar Hrithik

You’re based at the luxurious Daniel Galvin salon in Baker Street. How long have you been working there? I have been working at Daniel Galvin Salon for over 10 Years. Tell us about some of the most outrageous hair requests you’ve had? I’ve had some unusual hair style requests in my time. Once, I had to create poker straight hair to an Afro, that was a challenge. On another occasion, I had to create a Medusa hair-do for a fancy dress party.

I’ve had some unusual hair style requests in my time You are known as being synonymous with cutting edge and attention grabbing hairstyles. Tell us about some of the celebrity hair you’ve styled? I’ve styled the lovely Aishwarya Rai on a number of occasions, and one of my best memories was styling her hair for the red carpet premiere of her film Provoke. I also enjoyed styling Cindy Crawford for the cover of Harpers Bazaar in Munich. Deepika Padukone I did

Also known for some of the best red carpet hair, your clientele includes stars like Bollywood heartthrob Hrithik Roshan; who now has a wax work figure at London’s Madame Tussauds. Your hair creation was the inspiration behind this. Tell us more... I really enjoyed working on this project. I spent the whole day creating the hairstyle for Hrithik Roshan’s wax model. It was breathtaking, and we had some incredible moments together. You have also been a regular columnist for the UK’s leading national newspaper, Eastern Eye, targeting the South Asian Diaspora since 2005, promoting good hair care. What makes good hair to you? What makes good hair to me is having regular cuts and trims, using the right hair products, and not using harsh chemicals on the hair. I would also advise not using hair straighteners too often. Other than that having a good diet is very important.

What hair products do you recommend for flawless hair? Try and use the correct product for your type of hair as there are so many products on the market. Also, the most expensive products are not necessarily the best, so choose wisely and carefully. What’s your favourite hairstyle this season? My top tip for this season’s must-have hair style is something that is soft, curly, versatile and easy to maintain.

for the red carpet premiere of Om Shanti Om, and actor Hrithik Roshan I styled for the IFA Awards, which he won best actor at.

What tips would you give our readers to achieve this season’s hottest looks? Hollywood and Bollywood are responsible for starting many hairstyle trends that have swept the globe year after year. Many of the styles you see celebrities wearing can be found in fashion magazines and at various social gatherings. What hairstyle would you recommend for a bride-to-be? My tip for a bride-tobe would be to create a contemporary hairstyle that is not too bold or modern. So what is your calendar like for the rest of the year? My calendar for the rest of the year is busy and I’m really enjoying it. What advice would you give to someone who wanted to break into the hairstyling industry? I think it is a wonderful career to be in. It’s very hard work, but if you’re dedicated enough, the rewards are great. There is no stopping where it can take you, for example the modelling industry, fashion world, film world and the music industry. Info: Daniel Galvin Salon, Baker Street LIME MAGAZINE 2012

much I admire the work of this man. Ofosu, born in 1973 told me that he knew from as early as eight years old that one day, he was going to be a painter. Having completed his secondary education in the 90’s, in Ghana, Ofosu found himself still longing to paint and worked long hours in a poultry farm doing finance, while simultaneously studying under the tutelage of a local artist who encouraged his natural talent. In 2009, a portrait Ofosu did of his mother caught the attention of The Queen

a magazine. This gave him the confidence to continue to pursue his dream while doing many different jobs to pay the bills including cleaning, construction and care work. At one stage, things started to close in on him as he lost his job and had visa issues. Eternally optimistic, Ofosu told me that it was at this stage that he realised that all of these things had to happen in order for him to establish as a professional artist. Now he is one of the most prolific artists that I know painting every single day. In his own words,

“Through all of these things, I am on fire now!” Are you continuing to work to support your art? I teach the kids art every Tuesday in a school for kids who have been expelled. That job has allowed me to buy all of the art materials that I need to continue my practice. Now the energy and the paintings are just getting bigger! People always ask me how I am surviving, but somehow, I am surviving and amazing things are beginning to happen. Apart from working on Tuesday’s, you paint the rest of the time? I paint every day.

Morning and evening. That’s amazing Edward. I remember us exhibiting together in Ladbrook Grove and I know that since then, you have been involved in a number of group shows. Have you had any solo shows since? Yes, two solo shows. Did you sell any work? The first one, I sold one. The second show, I didn’t sell any, but most of those pieces have been sold now. What is your definition of success in art? My definition of success is when you are enjoying what you are doing.

By your definition of success, do you consider yourself to be successful? By my definition, I consider myself to be successful because of where I am. I am doing my work and I am enjoying it. I am totally in the work. I don’t even consider myself to be a person! I consider myself to be like a bamboo tree. Or, like a flute! You know, once you surrender to this life, life takes care of itself. It knows what to do with the apple tree, it knows what to do with the banana plant, it knows what to do with the elephant. It is only humans who try to find out what to do with themselves. Once you surrender to life, somehow, life is much

more sophisticated than you! Life can take care of you. Those who surrender to life, become life, become the totality. The totality begins to shine through that person. For me, because I have surrendered to the process, I consider myself successful. If I were not to surrender, I would be a struggling artist, even if the world made me famous and gave me lots of money. Why? Because my art would not be authentic, it would not have that power of the whole. It would just be empty from my point of view. It would be without a soul. When you are total, then you know that you are successful. The art world being run by the upper middle classes and us as minorities are known to have difficulties in penetrating that world, is that something that concerns you in your practice? In the past I saw that. We would talk about art and galleries in London and potential spaces for African artists. But now, I realise that nothing can stop light from shining. I remember one day, I walked past this pond. There were about 20 small trees in the middle of this pond. Then the sun started shining and all of a sudden, all the trees had light on them. You see, light cannot be stopped. So when you are shining your light,

Chipo

When the fulfilment of what you are doing is in the future, then you are not successful. The reason is that unless that future comes, you are not going to be fulfilled. Therefore, when your fulfilment is in what you are doing now, then the future, whatever form it takes, does not really make you or break you. In terms of society, if you then become famous, that is a by product. My work will suffer if my fulfilment is in the future. If that is my focus, I cannot be totally what I do because my totality is based on my idea of having success that may come tomorrow. If my fulfilment and success is in what I am doing, then I am total. I am fulfilled.

no one can stop your light from shining. That is why Van Gogh is still considered great today. Even though society may not have given him all of the awards and fame. When you shine a light, it will have an effect on anything that it comes into contact with. Therefore, the idea that someone is stopping you from shining, is the idea that stops you from shining! When you know that everything is within you, then you know that you are the limit of yourself! Whatever you see, is the reality. Nothing can stop the light from shining. Darkness exists but when the light shines, it disappears. What is your ultimate

dream for your art? My ultimate dream is to use my work as a catalyst to help people to get in touch with themselves. When you are not in touch with yourself, you cannot be yourself and that is where you find fulfilment. I want to use my work to challenge people, to bring out messages and words. I want to make provoking statements through my work that will make people ask questions that will make people find out that they are not who they say they are! Lucian Msamati talks about belonging

takes role as

‘the foreigner’ AAgbaje play ‘Belong’ dverts for Bolage’s

are everywhere. So to find out more Lime caught up with the play’s lead Lucian Msamati, to talk politics and artistic direction. Thanks for taking the time out to talk to Lime, how are rehearsals going? They are fantastically intense; this is new writing so there is a lot of rediscovery and tweaking which is all part of the process. It creates a lot of magic from the page. We have to make the words live and breathe, that is where the handy work of a lot of brilliant actors comes in. I go home exhausted in the best possible way. Tell us about this play ‘Belong’ There are a host of great characters. It’s set in London and in the North East of Lagos. It follows the travails of ‘Kayode’ a British MP. After losing a controversial election, he decides to de-camp to Nigeria for a break. He finds himself embroiled in the goings on back home and spends a lot of time explaining to people that he is not an Englishman but a Nigerian. This is essentially the theme of the play, where does one belong? What excites you about this project? Many things, it is my first offering of as Artistic Director of Tiata Fahodzi. Secondly it is a wonderful serendipity of many lives crossing. It promotes the British African experience

and pushes boundaries.

Playing the lead and appearing once again at the Royal Court Theatre must be a big deal. Yes, not only do I get the opportunity to tread the boards at one of the leading theatre’s in this country, but I am also bringing my theatre company Tiata Fahodzi here, that is a great achievement. I hope we are saying that we here and a part of this great country. You recently took on the role as Artistic Director with the African theatre company Tiata Fahodzi, how is that going? Very well, I have always maintained that my role is to make sure we get rehearsal room within budget with as little political and bureaucratic interference as possible (laughs). The reality is art is about 3% and the rest is politics. In order to make sure great art happens, you have to do everything else. Have you had much influence over this production? I suppose I have in a sense that it Tiata Fahodzi commissioned. We have to ensure the writer’s vision is expressed positively and that starts in the rehearsal rooms. We are giving it 120% and having a great time doing it. I remember Bolage’s play ‘Off the Endz’ was gritty and real, how did you feel when you read this script? I was attracted to it because it was not what Bolage

Words: Jennifer Rock

The biggest thing that has happened to me professionally has been on African soil and there is a beautiful poetry to that is known for, there is no gun or knife crime. It is set in a world of privilege.it explores a different culture. Some people might say Bolage has sold out, but I say no, this will be diverse and interesting. Did you enjoy going back home to work on the TV series, ‘The No 1 Ladies Detective Agency? Yes I loved it. The biggest thing that has happened to me professionally has been on African soil and there is a beautiful poetry to that. I felt very fortunate. I have worked hard for those opportunities, passion and sweat can take you to the stars. I am sure you get asked this question a lot, what was it like working with Jill Scott? You’re right I do, it was great fun. Jill is quite goofy when the cameras are not rolling. I was impressed that both Jill and Anika Noni Rose was that America didn’t arrive

first, those people arrived into the room and America came second. We had the chance to meet the person. What do you enjoy from being an actor? I can’t think of any better way to live than to do what I love, not many people get to do this. People have to make choices based on the necessity or practicality of their situation. When people ask what I do, you sometimes get that sneer they think it’s not a real job. But the taxes I pay are very real. What process do you go through when preparing for a new role? Interesting question, I am always hopeful that there is enough of a distinction between the previous role and the new one. I step into that vulnerable scary place. I do research if it’s new to me. There is no formula I just dive in and see what comes out. What is next for you? There are some Tiata Fahodzi projects in the pipeline. But foremost I will go on holiday with my family and recharge the batteries. that was Effie Melody White. After of her appearance at the 12th Annual Celebration of Gospel telecast on BET, we got a glimpse into the life of a Broadway actress, recording artist and gospel singer. Jennifer believes that music has a healing power and after 15 years since recording her last solo project she talks about the next leg of her journey proving that her story and her music is a gift to her audiences. You were born and raised in Houston, Texas where you began singing at the Pleasant Grove Baptist choir when you later moved on to big things on Broadway in the Big Apple. Tell us about the transition? Well if you’ve not been over to the USA, Texas is flat land; there are lots of trees so then to go to New York being a big city. It’s very reminiscent of London; Broadway is very close to Piccadilly. It was quite a shock. The whole culture; the scene was different. Touring with “Your Arms Are Too Short To Box With God.” must have been a benchmark in your career, how was that experience for you? That was very exciting for me I had a lot to learn in theatre you do eight shows a week. They taught me how to preserve my voice. It was exciting to learn, basically doing gospel music with a story; tell a story through a song.

You went on to perform in Dreamgirls, on Broadway in December, 1981 where you played the musical role of Effie Melody White; how did you find getting to grips with her as a character? We were doing a workshop it [Dreamgirls] hadn’t been titled. My role, my character hadn’t been developed. I hadn’t done lot of acting. I did singing with interpretation of my eyes. It was all an amazing

So you’re working on two CD projects, what can we expect? I’m making on gospel, jazz love standards. It’s coming along; the music industry of course has changed. By the time I finish everything would have changed again. So I’m working independently.

experience, it took a year and half to put together. More recently Jennifer Hudson played the role of Effie in the screen version of Dreamgirls that went out in 2006. What did you think of her portrayal of the character? Well I think she did a good job in a sense that when they make movies it’s an adaptation to theatre or book. There’s a liberty to do a lot of things. They stayed true to things I done with Effie. You also performed the “And I Am Telling You I’m Not Going” with Jennifer Hudson at the 2007 BET awards, what was that like? That was the first time that I had a chance to meet her. That time I was meeting her was the same time I was going to work with her. It was emotional for both of us and we went on to do it again in 2009. As a recording artist you

must spend a lot of time in the studio. Tell us about some of the musical artists you have worked with... Well basically I’m slowly getting back into the music. 1991 was my last album, ‘I’m on your side’. They just re-released that in the UK, for the anniversary collection. I started that with doing a bit of gospel and r’n’b. What would you say is your biggest influence in life? I would say my biggest influence in music would be Aretha Franklin. I grew

up listening to her pretty much my whole life. In theatre having to do eight shows a week, my voice changed a little bit, my voice got better and a lot more depth. Then I began to learn about other artists I had never heard off. Jazz artists like Ella Fitzgerald. Since Broadway, you’ve gone onto performing all over the world with the leading symphonies and received an Honorary Doctorate of Music from The Berklee College of music, what does this mean to you? That meant a lot; I went straight from Baptist choir to the stage. I went to college for only a quick second. And I never got a chance to do it. I’ve always stressed how important education is; education in music. It was very important to have some affiliation in education. What do you prefer being on stage or on screen?

FASHION/BEAUTY THEATRE

Acting, it’s nice, and you don’t know if you did a good job until it comes out. You have to trust the director if they were pleased. Unless you’re a major star you get to see the dailies. Theatre is live and in the moment; concerts are live and in the moment so out of these I’m best at home. It’s live in the moment you know by the audience response and connect with that. That’s even opposed to just recording in the studio.

In this generation of music which artists reminds you most of when you first started out in your musical journey? I look at instrumental course; theatre. I would say Ledisi would be the closet to where I am in terms of this generation compared to my generation. In terms of emotion, transferring raw emotions it would be Adele. But I’m just saying in terms of raw emotion being able to come through. What does this year have store for you? Well the biggest thing I’m going to do this year is Effie in Dreamgirls- this summer. This is quite an amazing task that would be a miracle in its self. I’m over 50. I’m really happy and excited for that, a few people from the UK have said that they’re flying over. Bob Marley Soundtrack

This is a little late since the soundtrack is already out but this is to make sure people get their copies. The film Marley is apparently a brilliant look at the life of one of the most influential artist’s period. This film is particularly important because it is the only documentary that has been given the green light to use intimate family footage. Anyway aside from that the soundtrack to that movie is out now so make sure it becomes part of your cd collection-(forgive the bias). Rita Ora ft Tinie Tempah-RIP This young lady has in a short period of time gone from a prospective talent to

someone who can seriously consider taking on the likes of the UK’s very own Jessie J. A step too far-no I do not think so-she has Jay Z’s Roc Nation backing her and Jay Z appears to be taking a personal interest in her career. Her first single with DJ Fresh Hot Right Now was a huge commercial entrance and now she follows this up with RIP featuring another brilliant UK name-Tinie Tempah. The single is just as catchy as Hot Right Now and was written by none other than Drake (you might know him). Released 7th May. Delilah-Breathe Delilah real name Poloma Stoecker is very likely to be the next UK sensation blessed with a tellingly emotive voice that allows her to emit a certain sensual melancholy in her words. Breathe is an absolutely brilliant single that certainly brings that tingle down the spine and it has a sound that is quintessentially UK particularly when that rolling drum beats kicks in. Her album ‘From the Roots

Its almost come full circle; Roots has not penned a tune for Skitz for a while and this one complements Skitz’s long-time co-hort and godfather of UK rap - Rodney P to a tee. To say this is rap royalty is not an understatement. This is a tag team to be reckoned with. Uncompromising lyrics alongside heavyweight production. Most importantly Skitz does not follow fashion. to stars in the blink of an eye but even by those rapid standards, Rita Ora’s rise has been amazing. Her feature on DJ Fresh’s ‘Hot Right Now’ has been banging down the doors of commercial radio and her next release, ‘RIP’ features Tinie Tempah and is catchy like bird flu. Now signed to Jigga’s Roc Nation she counts Jigga and Drake as friends and has acquired a celebrity boyfriend in the shape of Rob Kardashian. While she is undoubtedly going to become regular of the gossip columns due to her high profile lifestyle it must never be forgotten that she is a great singerproof was an accappella performance of her forth coming single RIP during the interview-totally brilliant. Evidently fun loving and charismatic, Lime got some time with the UK sensation. How are you Rita what has your week been like? My week has been crazy I was at the studio all night by myself I was in my zone and I was on the piano and I came up with

something and then I found out it was ten and I needed to come for the interviews!

King to Eric Clapton to Bon Jovi and when I listened to this music it just gave me a good feeling.

Firstly I wanted to ask about family and if they helped shape your wish to be a singer. No one in my family is into music they like music they are fans of music but I think it came from my father’s collection of cd I just used to listen to them he used to have a big collection of artists from BB

Were they happy that their daughter was pursuing such an unpredictable career? My family just wanted me to be happy and so they saw that music made me happy so they were with it but they just did not know what to expect they had to pay for the tuition for Sylvia Young – I never realised how hard my parents worked until I left and that is when I realised that my mum worked really hard every term to pay my fees it was like two or three thousand pounds a term and that was something she did for FIVE years!

You know what getting signed to Roc Nation is like one of those things where your dream just turned into reality?

How did attending Sylvia Young help? Sylvia Young is such a great school and it is a room full of talented people and all with the same dream It is a place where there is healthy competition – it’s not like Fame – it is a theatre school but it is just really good at specialising on your talent-the teachers focused on what you were good at so for me they knew I was a singer and they helped me to push that. You auditioned for the Eurovision but you backed out why? I just said I am a singer, a writer and true artists and one day if it is worth it – if I am worth it someone will notice and I just had to take that mind-set because I just felt that the path of

MUSIC

Rita Ora on her love of music and being signed to Roc Nation

the Eurovision was not going to lead me to where I wanted to go. I am not knocking the Eurovision because I am from Kosovo and we just got our independence and so we have finally got our own song but personally it was not for me. And how did the Roc Nation end up knocking on your door? It happened when an A&R from London who knew me from a while back and she saw me at a show on Camden and she asked me what I was up to which was just writing really and she told me to come to her office tomorrow and I took my demos just in case. She had called up a guy that works with Jay Z and she said we have this girl that I think you will be really interested you should check her out-they liked me and was called out to New York where it all started and I was eventually signed to Roc Nation. Lastly what has the experience been like with Roc Nation so far? You know what getting signed to Roc Nation is like one of those things where your dream just turned into reality? I am very lucky to have a label that believed what they signed – they never told me to be anything other than the person they discovered which was Rita the singer. They told me to take as long as I wanted to find myself and I think I have found myself. Info: Twitter: @RITAORA Website: www.ritaora.com LIME MAGAZINE 2012

What time is it Donaeo?

Uthe kings of the UK

I think the thing that has kept me at the fore front of the scene is the willingness to experiment. Words: Semper Azeez-Harris

“It’s Big to the Ben!”

Donaeo talks music, aspirations and suffering with ADHD ndoubtedly one of

underground scene with the 2008 bangers: Devil in A Blue Dress and African Warrior, Donaeo once again assaults our senses with his next smash, Big Ben, a high octane and aggy bit of UK funky. Of late the producer, song writer, singer and rapper has been showing his vocal prowess with a number of U-tube covers where he gets all RnB. “I have always sung” he attests to those of us that are more used to his bars and hooks-”we go party ard!”But Donaeo is at his core an interesting mix of versatility and experimentation which allows Donaeo to “keep pushing the boundaries”.

With Big Ben out now, Donaeo was surprisingly honest as we talked about his music, writing for artists like Yasmin and suffering with ADHD. Before we get onto music I just wanted to ask about suffering with ADHD, how does it affect you? 30 LIME MAGAZINE 2012

It just means I am a bit hyper-active and I have to do a lot of exercise to calm me down (but I have never needed medication) -also things and emotions can be more intense for me. When I am making music, I am always searching for that track that creates that intense love for a track. It sounds like it actually helps you when creating music It does but sometimes with the ADHD I can work too hard-I also need to chillout! Let’s talk about your single. Big Ben is the first single from my third album which is coming out in July. There were a few tracks that I could have chosen but my friends wanted me to go with this. You seem at home on any genre so what can we expect of this album? The album will be basically what I usually do – if you want things like Party Hard it will have those dance elements but there will also be a bit of a RnB vibe.

This year you have been dropping a lot of music where you are singing. I have not really been trying to push the singing more it is just that the listeners have always chosen the more rap dance orientated tracks I do. I have always sung really but I am not that fussed about whether people like me more rapping, I just make my music. I know you have a home studio how has that helped? It is extremely beneficial for me right now, say for example was doing a mix-tape and they were like they needed this and they needed that I can do it because I have my home studio I can work until whenever. The other benefit is when it comes to ideas I am in the comfort of my own home which makes it easier for me to be creative. It must help with your writing-indeed I noted you have been behind some of the big hits. Yes it does help me write as well and yes I have

helped write tracks like On My Own (20011) and Light Up The World (2012) for Yasmin and What You Talking About? (2010) with Ms Dynamite. Obviously music is the main factor but how else do you keep yourself at the forefront of the UK music scene? I think the thing that has kept me at the fore front of the scene is the willingness to experiment. Every underground scene comes and goes and now that funky has gone quiet I am not afraid to make some UK hip-hop very soonand that is what keeps me relevant. Lastly what else have you got in the pipeline apart from the album? I have a Jack Beats collabo coming out on the 17th May and another collabo with Foreign Beggars and a collabo with Artful Mark [Artful Dodger] as well. singer who has managed to storm the UK scene with absolutely no promotional work. Her first single Mama I’m Gonna Sing (which was remixed by the dj of djs, Pete Tong) borrows from deep blues, has a toe in country music whilst still being a definitely contemporary track-it would get even an elderly man with arthritis and two left feet up and dancing. Radio and U-tube was consequently hooked purely on the strength of the brilliant single – a brave move whichever way you look at it. While the UK is only staring to get acquainted with this likeable and rather gorgeous singer LA and Atlanta are already aware with EJ being signed on a development deal to write songs. With a definite hand in all that she wants to become EJ’s second single Bangers and Mash (which has already gained airplay on 1xtra amongst others) again showcases EJ’s brilliant

voice which belies her tender years and suggests a person that has seen or experienced more than most of her age. He had a BIG effect on my music-in terms of Cuban music it is very guitar based but also in Cuba we either go into very Afro or very Latin music and so you can get very native afro beats or Latin with that guitar vibe coming through. Did your family push musicality? Not necessarily push but growing up, music was a way of expressing yourself and if you were not good at it people would get angry because it was like dis-respecting music-it’s like if you are going to get up there and perform then you better be good! I understand you play instruments. I do play instruments I play the guitar and the piano

and I am self-taught-my parents really encouraged me at a very young age. I have chosen not to play as yet because it sometimes better to let people concentrate on one thing at a time and so with this album and the first single that came out it was very much about concentrating on me from a vocal perspective. So let’s get onto now, would it be fair to say that you have burst onto the scene from literally no-where? Well I have been doing music for such a long time but it was just one of those things where I was just involved with a lot of people who believed in my art and they have just allowed me to do that without me having to do anything else and until they felt that I was ready to go out and basically meet people and introduce myself and my music. Why is it only now that you are coming to the fore? Everything just falls together I just have people around me that I feel that they are the right people to help me to get to where I want to be and you just trust people to put things in place. The other thing is I worked such a long time on this album and that was the main thing that took most of the time I wanted the album to be a true reflection of my influences and me.

Lastly how will you insure that music does not make you a victim as it can sometimes do? Within music it is one of those businesses where you see a lot of things really quickly and you need to have grounding to take things in your stride. I am very much aware of what is going around me and I keep grounded through family and friends. Info: Twitter: @ejupdates LIME MAGAZINE 2012

Ithe Blockbuster season,

t’s the traditional start of

not that the weather is giving as anything to go on, so here are some of our picks from May. Looks like staying indoors in a warm and cosy cinema might just be the best thing to do anyway... The big one is obviously ‘Men in Black 3’. Will Smith and Tommy Lee Jones return, this time joined by Josh Brolin and Nicole Sherzinger. It’s an eclectic cast, but from the trailer we think Brolin might just steal this movie with his impression of Jones. May also sees the start of Cannes, and the film that kicks of the French film festival will also be getting a theatrical run here. ‘Moonrise Kingdom’ stars Bruce Willis, Edward Norton and Bill Murray. It looks fantastic, but we know very little else about the plot.

Men In Black 3

if you are a fan of Chris Rock. This is probably his most accomplished screen performance to date, and the director has more than a hint of Woody Allen to her work. Perhaps it’s just those glasses though? Mel Gibson makes a controversial return to the big screen with ‘How I Spent my Summer Vacation’, although I think we all know how he spent it...

expect them to deliver. ‘Piranha 3DD’ is the provocatively-titled sequel that sees more carnivorous fish taking large chunks out of bikini-clad teens. The last one was actually fun, so perhaps this can get us laughing if nothing else. The Lucky One

Two Days In New York

We’ve currently been enjoying the UK version of Sundance, and one of the highlights was ‘2 Days in New York’. Julie Delpy stars in and directs this comedy of manners, and it’s well worth catching especially 32 LIME MAGAZINE 2012

Piranha 3DD

If none of that takes your fancy then you could try two films that are certain to deliver just what you

Also we’re pretty sure Johnny Depp and Tim Burton have perfected whatever formula it was that they have been working on for years now. There’s an all-star cast on board for ‘Dark Shadows’, including Michelle Pheiffer, Eva Green and (shock, horror) Helena Bonham Carter.

Couple more things to keep an eye on. First up Zac Efron in ‘The Lucky One’ from the writer of ‘The Notebook’. Worth noting if you are dragged along to see it by a partner... there is only one thing they have in mind with this film. Finally if you want some old-fashioned laughs, check out ‘America Pie: Reunion’. All the gang are back, and they are all a lot older. Unfortunately, it also makes you realise just how old you are as well.

Review: Stud Life Words: Jennifer Rock It might sound clichéd, but the trials and tribulations of love, life and relationships in the film ‘Stud Life’ are not too dis-similar from any film you’d see in mainstream cinema. And hopefully with the right level of funding and backing this film might be the one to look out for. Cambell, Stud Life

inside into the world a stud, if you’re unsure about (LGBT) terminology, according to Wikipedia a stud is a ‘dominant lesbian, usually butch, typically dresses more masculine, and enjoys “masculine” activities’. It is here that (T’Nia Miller) who plays JJ does an amazing job of transforming herself into a much believable character taking on the persona and vigour of a young black lesbian stud.

JJ and Seb (Kyle Treslove) a gay man who is always looking for love in all the wrong places are best friends, but when JJ takes on a relationship with the beautiful Elle (Robyn Kerr) their friendship is tested, so the question is does love conquer all? My verdict, I enjoyed the film which had a very realistic story line, boasts an impressive soundtrack

and is shot entirely in London which adds that familiarity for British audiences.. The characters were very well drawn and you soon learn their backstories. So without giving too much away, there might not always be happy endings in life, but this film does indeed give you a realistic and intriguing one.

CLUBS Lime Rating: Release date: 4 May Beauty and the Beast 3D This might seem like an odd choice to at first. A 3D re-release of a classic Disney animation that was out on blu-ray no more than a few months ago. So why is it our film of the month? Beauty and the Beast is still one of the finest animated tales ever put on screen.

The care and attention taken in every frame of the film is apparent for all to see. What makes this release stand out is that the same level of care has been taken in transferring the film into the 3D format. The visuals are spectacular, using a combination of the hand-drawn style as well subtle computer assistance. The characters are beautifully designed, from The Beast to the talking

teacups. Then there are the musical numbers, and it’s no understatement to say that they are among the best that Disney have ever produced. Kids will love this, even if they are frightened by some of it. It’s what makes these films so great after all, and grown-ups will have a wonderful time as well. An absolute corker, made even better.

LIME’S MAY FILM reVIEWS

The Raid Lime Rating: Release date: 18 May Starring: Iko Uwais, Joe Taslim, Yayan Ryhian We feel spoilt this month. Here is the film that has had us salivating ever since the bombastic trailer dropped late last year.

Indonesian martial arts star Iko Uwais finds himself part of a botched attempt to take down a notorious criminal kingpin. Trapped with an ever-dwindling number of SWAT team members, there is only one way out. FIGHT! Welsh director Gareth Evans follows up his previous hit ‘Merantau’ with a blistering film that has rightly been taking the festival circuit by storm.

34 LIME MAGAZINE 2012

The fights are incredibly brutal, some of the best put on film. Bones are broken and characters dispatched with gusto, all to an amazing soundtracks with matches the action on screen perfectly. Uwais looks like a normal guy, which makes his exertions here even more appealing. The genre has been poorly served by an overuse of muscle-men and

terrible CGI, here is is kept real in every sense of the word. The premise itself is simple, and some viewers might find the violence excessive, but you really aren’t going into this film blind. Now that you know what it’s about, surely you want to see it? I know I want to watch it again and again. It’s just that damn good.

Safe Lime Rating: Release date: 4 May Starring: Jason Statham A generic looking Jason Statham vehicle with a basic premise and rather bland title. This must be a forgettable little movie, right? WRONG! Safe is probably the best and most originally directed movie of this type that we can think of. The plot sees grizzled formercop Statham taking on protection duties when a young girls life is in danger. What follows is a manic series of action sequences and utterly bonkers dialogue which has its tongue firmly in its cheek. Statham has great fun essentially playing himself. The brand is now strong enough to be parodied by the man himself, and he is fully in on the joke. The neat and economical direction is perfect for the material. It keeps you on your toes and keeps you guessing just how far the film will go in terms of an effective send-up. The answer is all the way. Bravo.

narrow down some of the best wedding films felt impossible. So I have put it down to my top ten, to avoid going on forever. In no particular order I have shared what I think are a combination of romantics, tear jerker’s, films with both cringe worthy and laughable moments along with a bit of cheese. Bridesmaids (2011)

Plot: Bridesmaids tells the story of two BFF’s whose friendship is put to the ultimate test; when thirty something Annie’s (Kirsten Wiig) life is turned completely upside down when she takes on the Maid of Honour role in her best friend Lillian’s (Maya Rudolph) wedding. In this outrageously funny film Annie finds herself leading the ensemble of bridesmaids down a hilarious and wild ride along the road to the big day. Favourite funny moment: There are too many moments where you’ll be holding your gut to prevent it from falling off while laughing. One favourite of mine would be the bridesmaids on board the flight to Las Vegas for Lillian’s bachelorette party. Muriel’s Wedding (1994) Plot: Muriel’s wedding is one of my favourite ultimate chick flicks! I love this film because it oozes cheese and plenty of ABBA songs. Starring Toni Collette as Muriel Heslop, she spends her days alone in her room dreaming of her wedding day. Muriel has never had

Top 10 Wedding Films a date. But when she steals money to go on a tropical vacation she meets a wacky friend, changes her name to Mariel, and lives life to the full. Tear jerker: Poor Muriel is ousted by her old high school friends on Vacation. My Best Friend’s Wedding (1997) Plot: Julia Roberts stars in this romantic comedy which tells the tale of falling in love with her best friend Michael (played by Dermot Mulroney) after he announces he will marry someone else, Roberts becomes jealous and tries to win her man back. Spoiler: prepare for karaoke by Cameron Diaz and lots of cheese. My Big Fat Greek Wedding (2002) Plot: Toula Portokalos (played by Nia Vardalos) a 30 year old Greek women working at her family’s restaurant is almost ‘past her sell by date’, with her traditional family making a fuss over her meeting a “nice Greek boy” and getting married. She swallows her pride and takes things into her own hands landing into the lap of the perfect guy. Except he’s not Greek. What to expect: Expect lots of things that remind you of having a big family, see Toula as she battles with her culture, heritage and family over her big day!

Bride wars (2009) Plot: In this undoubtedly funny film, best friends lawyer Liv (Kate Hudson) and school teacher Emma (Anne Hathaway) dream of having their perfect wedding at the Plaza Hotel. But when both of their men propose, war begins! Prepare for: Lots of kick-ass catfights and competition between the brides- to –be; where we see them taking each other on in a bid to have the best wedding. Father of the bride (1991) Plot: Steve Martin plays Dad in this fantastic film; a remake of the Spencer Tracy classic. We see George (Martin) acting as a nervous farther who just doesn’t want to let go of his little girl. Lots of funny moments as we see the wedding preparations take shape. Verdict: A real sweet family movie! Bride & Prejudice (2004) Plot: Based on Jane Austen’s classic tale; Pride & Prejudice, this Bollywood remake is the perfect ‘hens night in’ film. Starring the beautiful Aishwarya Rai as Lalita Bakshi in India, we see her fall in love with tough nut to crack- Mr Darcy, after her mother is eager to find suitable husbands to marry her four daughters.

Surprise: Performance by Ashanti Made of honour (2008) Plot: A great romantic comedy starring Patrick Dempsey and Michelle Monaghan. Tom (Dempsey) and Hannah (Monaghan) have been best friends for ten years. He’s a serial dater and she hasn’t found her Mr. Right. When Hannah gets engaged, she makes Tom her ‘Maid of Honour’ but when his feelings for Hannah surface, he attempts to stop the wedding and win her heart. Why you’ll love it: Watching Tom’s attempts to stop the wedding are very comical, with his interest in Hannah’s happiness a real tug at your heart strings.

27 Dresses (2008) Plot: Katherine Heigl plays serial bridesmaid Jane, who has been a bridesmaid 27 times. Known as the friend who never says no, she helps plan her friend’s weddings, secretly dreaming of one day marrying her boss who she has fallen for. Jane meets Kevin (James Marsden) a cynical writer who is attracted to her, who also sees an opportunity to boost his career. In the same week her sister arrives in town and snatches her man, no guesses there! Jane has to plan the wedding. Favourite scene: Seeing all 27 wedding dresses on Heigl. Why did I get married? (2007) Plot: OK so it’s not quite a trip down the aisle. But this is definitely one of my favourite Tyler Perry movies to date. In this big screen adaptation of Perry’s stage play about the trials of marriage expect lots of laughs, tears and a showdown at the dinner table. I love: the cast which includes Tyler Perry, Janet Jackson, Jill Scott, Malik Yoba and many more. LIME MAGAZINE 2012

COMMUNITY FAMILY MATTERS

Could you foster? TCare Fortnight, the

his month it’s Foster

Fostering Network’s annual campaign to raise the profile of fostering and attract potential foster carers. This year’s campaign will run from the 14th to 27th May and see fostering services hold events and highlight the urgent need for more foster carers across the UK.

About foster care Fostering is about looking after other people’s children when they are unable to remain with their own families. Foster care provides a safe, secure and stable environment for these young people. Fostering is a way of providing a family life for children who cannot live with their own parents. It is often used to provide temporary care while parents get help sorting out problems or to help children or young people through a difficult period in their lives. Often children will return home once the problems that caused them to come into foster care have been resolved and that it is clear that their parents are able to look after them safely. Others may stay in longterm foster care, some may be adopted, and others will move on to live 36 LIME MAGAZINE 2012

Foster Care Fortnight 2012 independently. There are different types of foster care, they are: • Emergency – where children need somewhere safe to stay for a few nights. • Short-term – where carers look after children for a few weeks or months, while plans are made for the child’s future. • Short-breaks – where disabled children or children with special needs or behavioural difficulties enjoy a short stay on a pre-planned, regular basis with a new family, and their parents or usual foster carers have a short break for themselves. • Remand fostering – where young people in England or Wales are “remanded” by the court to the care of a specially trained foster carer. • Long-term and permanent – not all children who cannot return to their own families want to be adopted, especially older children or those who continue to have regular contact with relatives. These children live with long-term foster carers until they reach adulthood and are ready to live independently. •“Family and friends” or “kinship” fostering – this is where children who are looked after by a local authority are cared for by

people they already know. This can be very beneficial for children, If they are not looked after by the local authority, children can live with their aunts, uncles, brothers, sisters or grandparents without outside involvement. • Private fostering – where the parents make an arrangement for the child to stay with someone else who is not a close relative and has no parental responsibilities and the child stays with that person (the private foster carer) for more than 27 days. Although this is a private arrangement there are special rules about how the child is looked after. The local authority must be told about the arrangements and visit to check on the child’s welfare. The assessment process to become a foster carer requires you to undergo several checks and meetings before you can be approved. This includes: • Local authority/trust • Medical • Criminal record A selection of references would also need to be provided and the timescale of the assessment process can take between three to six months depending on your availability.

Who can foster? Foster care is a professional role and will require carers to work as part of a team to achieve the very best for all the children and young people cared for. All children in foster care will be looked after by a local authority and the foster carers will work in partnership with the local authority to provide this. The foster carers may also work with other professionals such as therapists, teachers or doctors to help the child to deal with emotional traumas or physical or learning disabilities. It is best for children to live with foster carers who reflect and understand the child’s heritage, ethnic origin, culture and language, and fostering agencies need carers from all types of backgrounds. Can you provide? • A spare room • Full-time availability as a main carer • Experience living/ working with children. • Provide care to children and young people for a few days, weeks, months or years depending on their needs.

I’m single; do I have to have a partner? Yes. People do not need to be married to become a foster family – they can also be single, divorced or cohabiting. Gay men and lesbians can become foster carers. I have a criminal conviction, can I still foster? Many people who have made mistakes in their youth go on to become very understanding parents. However the nature of your offence would have to be discussed. Violent or sexual offences, unless committed at a very young age, will exclude you. How will fostering affect my other children? Only you can be the judge. They will be included in the assessment process and meetings will be held to discuss the impact of fostering on all family members post approval. Are foster carers paid? Foster care is a professional role; therefore carers will receive a fostering allowance for the child’s

There are various organisations that can offer help and support foster carers throughout the process: • They can attend groups where they learn about the needs of children coming into foster care. • Alongside this, they receive visits from a social worker. • The social worker will then prepare a report that is presented to an independent fostering panel, which recommends whether this person/ family can become foster carers. • Training does not stop when a person becomes a foster carer. All carers have an annual review and any training that’s needed to ensure they are suitable to continue fostering. • Training is linked to the training and development standards for foster carers set out by the Council for Workforce Development (CWDC) which have to be met by the end of first year of fostering. There are slightly different expectations for family and friends carers and short break carers. • Some carers also take a national qualification such as an NVQ level 3 Caring for Children and Young People.

About adoption Adoption is a way of providing a new family for a child when living with their own family is not possible. It is the assumption of full legal and parental responsibility for a child. The child becomes a full member of the adoptive family.

Fostering Q&A’s

Fostering is different from adoption because when a child is in foster care, the child’s parents or the local authority still have legal responsibility for them. But when a child is adopted, all legal responsibility for the child passes to the new family, as though the child had been born into that family, and the local authority and the birth parents no longer have formal responsibility for the child. of London’s club DJ’s and artists across the last three decades come together to celebrate the legendary master mix DJ and club pioneer, Paul ‘Trouble’ Anderson’s immeasurable contribution to UK dance music and to raise funds for Macmillan Cancer Support, at Ministry Of Sound. Taking over the whole club from 9pm, the unsurpassed UK line up includes artists such as Jocelyn Brown, Robert Owens, Reel People, Lisa Millet, Rose Windross (Soul II Soul) and DJ’s such as Danny Rampling, Phil Asher, Kid Batchelor, Zepherin Saint, Frankie Foncett and of course, Paul ‘Trouble’ himself. So where does this legendary story start? Born in East London, Paul ‘Trouble’ Anderson grew up in children’s homes all over England, becoming a keen sportsman. His natural athleticism and immense passion for football saw him go on to play for Tottenham Hotspurs, Charlton and Middlesex County’s youth squads as well running for Haringey. As well as sports Paul enjoyed music and was a

major dancer in the clubs, pre-mixing days, and he is still dancing in the DJ box, having been known to hurdle over the decks for a boogie down before jumping back just in time to cue the next record! Paul started off DJ-ing in the early Sound System days, and was also a soundman, who followed the Chicken, Scrap Iron and Fat Man Around systems around. Paul’s uncle ran a reggae sound that converted into a soul sound, called Troublefunk and this is where he acquired his stage name “Trouble”. At this time he meet DJ pioneer and one of the founders of Kiss FM radio, George Power, who asked Paul to play alongside him at the legendary jazz funk sessions at Crackers. Paul was the first black DJ to play in Soho in 1979 and he then went onto blaze a

trail in the London music scene, developing highly acclaimed seminal sessions of early electro, boogie, jazz dance, hip hop, soul and any new dance sound at what became historic clubs such as Crackers, Spats, The Embassy, Global Village and the Electric Ballroom. He played the best tunes during the rise of each genre: Reggae, Soul, Funk, Jazz-Funk, Disco, Electro, Hip-Hop and then House. “I left school and went to the Electric Ballroom and all these boogie tunes I heard Paul Trouble playing, well he was the guy that set me on my path” Femi Fem (Young Disciples & Supperclub Musical Director) “I used to play upstairs at the Electric Ballroom and I would sneak out whilst playing a long jazz record and go and listen to Paul playing early electro tunes. He is one of the most important people in London club culture, and Soul II Soul and all that stuff came off the back of Paul Anderson and lets not forget that. He’s an original boogie man, playing material that’s very dirty,

very bouncy - real shuffle, and the girls love it and boys feel good around it” Gilles Peterson, Radio 1/ Brownswood By the mid 80’s he was championing his ‘Trouble Funk’ sound and bringing his exciting dance music style to the capital’s underground warehouse scene. ‘For me, Paul “Trouble” Anderson is a musicologist who has touched most peoples lives whether they realise it or not. Over the years we’ve had many a close and deep conversation about life and our love of Man Understanding Spiritual Information Clearly (MUSIC). His DJ-ing is an extension of his prolific dancing days in the 70’s and I like many followed suit. His mentor was Trevor Shakes, another predecessor DJ dancer, who along with Dez Parkes invited Paul to spin at the quintessential Spats’ boogie night in the early 1980’s. I first came across Paul like many of my generation at the Electric Ballroom on Friday’s in Camden circa 1982. Paul’s mixing and blending back then was

fledgling pirate radio station, Kiss FM and found the prospect of promoting dance music on-air an exciting one, going on to hit new heights of creativity and skill. His incredibly accurate technical skills, perfect clean mixing, and all-action DJ style, made the music come alive and inspired all those that heard his shows and who have come after him.

inspirational especially dropping tunes like Ryuichi Sakamoto’s ‘Riot In Lagos’. I’ve seen many DJ’s (who are now considered icons) listen and imitate Paul and spin their heads like Linda Blair of the Exorcist as they try to read the label of what he’s playing. His shows on the pirate and then legal Kiss FM are legendary as are his residencies at Dance Wicked, Legends, The Wag and The Loft... well you had to be there. As a young black teenager of his era, he made many of us feel we had hope to achieve as he rose to unimaginable heights in the music industry, so much so that promoters would have Paul’s name on their flyers to boost their event without his permission! Above and beyond any DJ he is my inspiration to do what I do now and he is the only man I know back in the day who could mix, drink his brandy, dance and DJ and churps a woman... all at the same time! Genius!! There is only one Trouble In D Mix!!’ Fitzroy Da Buzzboy In 1985 he joined the

‘Paul and I were chatting outside Kiss FM in ‘88 about how the scene was moving and I remember this so clearly. He said to me way back then “It’s all about the mixing, I’m gonna be a mixer”. It probably took another 2 years before I really understood that statement and by then Paul was way ahead of the pack. He had it down! He mixes like no other - it really is a part of him, a natural body reaction. Paul doesn’t just mix, he recreates. He naturally and seamlessly turns 2 tracks into a totally new sound. For the countless times he’s taken me on a journey and held that beat, he’ll always have my love, friendship and respect. God Bless you ‘Trouble’ Roy The Roach During the late 1980s Acid House era, Paul was head-lining at the massive Sunrise, Biology and Back to the Future raves, and was also resident at Love at the Wag, Solaris and Enter The Dragon at the Park. Paul was the first UK DJ to play in Italy, and was the regular resident at Angels of Love (Napoli, Italy). Paul was one of the founders of Kiss FM, London’s first legal dance music station. His hugely influential Saturday Night 9pm-11pm Live “Exclusive Advance Dance Mix Show” on Kiss FM (1990-1999) was sponsored by Sony, Levis, Vestax

and Stussy. Paul launched and nurtured amazing residencies at legendary clubs such asTrouble’s House (Legends) and The Loft (HQs, Camden Town - London’s best mid-week club which ran for 10 years with special appearances from DJs Tony Humphries, Louie Vega, Kerri Chandler, Norman Jay, CJ Mackintosh Grant Nelson and Dave Camacho, Marshall Jefferson, Gusto, and singers Kathy Sledge, Ultra Nate, Jocelyn Brown, Adeva, Loleatta Holloway (RIP), Joi Cardwell, Kathy Brown, Carol Sylvan, Andrea Mendez, Amira, Mone, Jean Carne, Crystal Waters, Kenny Bobien, Gerideau, Arnold Jarvis, Shawn Benson (RIP), Leroy Burgess and Stephen Granville. His huge support in breaking vocal stars includes amazing artists such as Michael Watford and Barbara Tucker, and hits such as “Closer Than Close” by Rosie Gaines and “Get Up” by Byron Stingily. Paul continues to play Guest DJ sets on the world’s more discerning dancefloors, and strives to always bring more to the table in dance music. “Some of my greatest memories are of The Loft parties in Camden, and whenever Paul played and plays today you always feel a kind of magic in the air. You can see it on the faces of people he brings together.” Robert Owens “If you wanted to hear upfront, unreleased, dubplate, acetate pressure in the house, it had to be The Loft & Paul Trouble Anderson. It wasn’t about the labels to him, it was all about the rhythm, the beats, the arrangement and particularly, vocal tracks. He has this kind of way of weaving together two

vocal tracks, layering them, mixing between them, and this technique is his article signature. And when ‘Trouble is in the land’, one of his catch phrases you know it’s Trouble time.” Marcia Carr, Da Vinyl MC Paul’s musical achievements include compiling Classic House Mastercuts 2; Remixing Nomad’s No 1 hit, ’Devotion’ and Junior Reid’s No 1 in Jamaica, ’One Blood’ as well as remixes for Blaze, Pet Shop Boys, Soul II Soul, Thelma Houston, and Byron Stingily, and a Live Mix “Trouble’s House” album on R2 Records

He has also enjoyed close links with the fashion world, compiling the music and playing at Julian Macdonald’s show at London Fashion week and for Chanel at Milan Fashion week. He worked for Italian Fashion TV for 2 years, and has also been photographed for Italian Vogue with Giorgio Armani. Now in his 37th year of DJing, he is still going strong with nights such as Loft Reunion, Trouble’s House and Back to My Roots and still refusing to be labelled. His current projects include, setting up his own record label ’Troubled Soul Records’, mixing his own artist album with his own songs, as well as writing a Biography and ‘Pauletry’ Paul’s take on poetry! His reputation for delivering fantastic music coupled with creating a great atmosphere for a friendly and happy crowd continues to unite and inspire clubbers and music lovers alike. As an Artist, Paul has a restless soul and the dedication to carry on championing Dance music at present and in the future. LAUGH OUT LOUDER! BREAKTIME

ALL ABOUT MARRIAGE!

1.

Marriage is a three ring circus: engagement ring, wedding ring, suffering.

15

. I asked my wife, “Where do you want to go for our anniversary?” She said, “Somewhere I have never been!” I told her, “How about the kitchen?”

2.

There are two times a man does’nt understand a woman, before marriage and after marriage!

16

. Bad Teddy recently explained to me why he refuses to ever get married. He says “the wedding rings look too much like miniature handcuffs.....”

3.

A successful husband is one who makes more money than his wife can spend. A successful woman is one who can find such a man!

4.

A woman worries about the future until she gets a husband. A man never worries about his future until he gets a wife!

5.

A man will pay $2.00 for a $1.00 item he wants. A woman will pay $1.00 for a $2.00 item she does not want!

6.

When a man opens the door of his car for his wife, you can be sure of one thing: either the car is new or the wife.

7.

Man is incomplete until he is married. Then he is finished.

8.

Married man live longer than a single

man, but married man are lot more willing to die!

9.

If your dog is barking at the back door and your wife is yelling at the front door, who do you let in first? The Dog of course...at least he’ll shut up after you let him in!

10

. A woman has the last word in any argument. Anything a man says after that is the begining of a new argument.

11

. Any married man should forget his mistakes because there is no use in remembering two

people the same thing.

12

. When a newly married couple smiles, everyone knows why. When a ten-year married couple smiles, everyone wonders why.

13

. Before marriage, a man yearns for the woman he loves. After marriage, the “y” becomes silent.

14

. What is the difference between a marriage and a war? A marriage is a war in which the enemies can sleep together!

How well do you know your partner?

Relationships can be very puzzling as we all know. Take celibacy, for example; this can be a choice, or a condition imposed by environmental factors. While attending a special Marriage Awareness Weekend in Doncaster, 46 LIME MAGAZINE 2012

He turned to the men and asked, ‘Can you each

Thus began Nicky’s life of celibacy.

Riley leaned over, touched Nicky’s arm gently and whispered, ‘Self raising, isn’t it?’

. To be happy with a man, you must understand him a lot and love him a little. To be happy with a woman, you must love her a lot and not try to understand her at all !

18

. A woman marries a man expecting he will change, but he does’nt. A man marries a woman expecting that she won’t change and she does.

19

. We always hold hands. If I let go, she shops.

20

. Men wake up as good looking as they went to bed. Women somewhat deteriorate during the night.
