Lime’s Recipe of the month! Chinese Spring Rolls

Chinese New Year is the most important of the traditional Chinese holidays. So this month in Lime why not try your hands at these popular light, stir-fried bites that can be served with fruity chutney, an oriental style salad or even as party nibbles. You will need: • 150g bean sprouts • 4 spring onions • 4 carrots • 115g sliced bamboo shoots • 115g white mushrooms • 3 tbsp vegetable oil • 1 tsp salt • 1 tsp light brown sugar • 1 tbsp light soy sauce • 1 tbsp Chinese rice wine or dry

sherry • 270g/ 6 sheets Filo Pastry (Serves 6) To begin cut all the vegetables into thin shreds so that they are roughly all the same size. Next you need to heat the oil in a wok and stir-fry the vegetables for about one minute. Add the salt, sugar, soy sauce and rice wine or sherry and continue stirring for two minutes. Remove the stir-fried vegetables from the wok, drain the excess liquid and then leave to cool. Preheat the oven to 190°C/gas mark 5. To make the spring rolls, unroll the filo pastry, keeping the sheets in a stack. Then, using a sharp knife

cut pastry in half diagonally, then place about 1 tbsp of the stir-fried vegetable mixture one third of the way down the sheet, with the triangle pointing away from you. Lift the lower flap over the filling and roll it up once. Fold in both ends and roll once more and then brush some oil the end to seal. Lightly dust the tray with flour and place the spring rolls on the tray with the flap side down. Repeat with the remaining filo strips and filling. Bake the rolls for 12–15 minutes until golden and crisp. Finally transfer to a wire rack and allow the rolls to cool slightly before serving.

Zoilo restaurant Words: Victoria Woode Lime rating: I went down to the newly opened Argentinian restaurant Zoilo located in the heart of London! I was swiftly escorted to the downstairs bar and eating area located directly in front of an open kitchen. The seating made a nice change to most restaurants. For my starter I sampled ‘Empanda’s’, traditional Argentinian pastries, similar to mini patties. I tried two versions; one contained chicken, grilled peppers and cumin, this was nice but nothing special, however the vegetarian version was delicious! Spinach, raisins and pine nuts encased in golden pastry. The texture and flavours really complimented one another. For my main obviously steak would be the way to go whilst dining at south American eatery. I asked the waiter for my flank steak to be served well done, however he

But nevertheless we both indulged ourselves in chocolate fondant with vanilla ice-cream, a decent way to end our Pan Asian experience. Having already won Best Chinese Restaurant in London at the prestigious Asian Curry Awards; Naga is an exceptional restaurant with quality dishes and has a thriving atmosphere should you visit on a Friday evening. Naga, Kensington Words: Vernia Mengot Lime Rating: It was a freezing cold Friday lunchtime and there was nothing more exciting than the thought of gearing up to try some of the best, Pan Asian cuisine Kensington has to offer. On arrival Semper and I were greeted by friendly staff and seated in the restaurant which boasted modern decor and a contemporary design. To start we went in, with Semper being adventurous and opting for Pho – a Vietnamese Beef Rice Noodle Soup complete with chilli, coriander, spring onions and bean sprouts. I on the other hand, played it safe and went for Bo La Lot; vine leaves stuffed with char-grilled beef. It was a bit tricky getting to grips

Mile High Lands in London Tortilla Restaurant, The Strand Words: Vernia Mengot Lime rating: On entry Tortilla resembled a Mexican version of Subway, with the queue pilling out of the door, it was obvious that the demand for an express CaliforniaMexican meal at lunchtime in an area such as The Strand was high. After selecting my choice from the varied menu of burritos, fajita’s and taco’s; I decided to opt for a large burrito filled with grilled chicken, Mexican rice, black beans and hot salsa with Monterey Jack cheese. For £5.95 what I thought was a simple

burrito turned into a satisfying meal that made me extremely grateful for the elastic around my waist. Between crunching on tortilla crisps and devouring my burrito I admired the canteen/ urban coffee shop style I was seated in. Complete with lounge music in the background the restaurant began to fill up with hoards of young people lunching over chit chat. acclaimed, multi award winning British visual artist. Born in 1958, her work includes sculpture, installation, drawing, prints and digital media. A highly accomplished artist, McAdam Freud has work in private and public collections including the National Gallery, the Victoria and Albert Museum in London, the British Museum and the Greek National Gallery among other international museums. Daughter of one of the most widely known British painters in modern history- Lucian Freud, McAdam Freud kindly took time out of her busy schedule to express her thoughts on her career to date, her fathers influence, success and patriarchy in art. I read that you first discovered your passion for art at the age of three while playing in a sand pit! Is this a real memory, which, you can

actually recall, or is this something your parents told you about when you got older? It is a real memory of when I discovered my passion for the tactile, the power of the sensory and the joy of getting my hands dirty: in short my first sculptural experience. I get the sense that you have a real passion for what you do and that the desire to do it is intense and real. When do you first recall having the desire to become an artist? As far back as I can remember, with a complete overriding passion. I have always thought that it was the only thing to do and the thought inhabited every fibre of my being. Is it possible to distinguish whether or not that desire had something to do with your father? The intensity of the feeling may have had something to do with my father as his

It does not suit me to be pigeon holed intensity in general and especially for his work was something I experienced form so young, from birth: he was there at my birth. This level of intensity for life, for what one does is something I have always felt. Can you pin point how and why he influenced you to pursue an artistic career? I can remember wanting success as an artist with a passion from so very young. It was my secret wish with every pull of the wishbone. I looked at the catalogues my father left lying around our house all the time and became entranced with the figures, their haunting eyes and how they filled the picture plane. I was then very shy, my mother, a loner herself was quiet, and my father didnâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t speak much so it was through images that I formed my views and from which I took my impressions.

You went to the Wimbledon College of Art, Central St Martins and the Royal College of Art. What courses did you study at those three colleges? I did a Foundation Course at Wimbledon College of Art, where I studied a bit of everything. At Central St. Martins I studied the same course in the same rooms as my father. Strangely it was a course I felt driven to do without reason, although I consider it to have been the best initial training I could have wished for. The course was called 3D design / Jewellery and it was that I learnt

all the sorts of skills that I needed to make things, albeit on a small scale. It was designing for objects on the body; the way we designed, they bore little resemblance to what is conventionally viewed as jewellery in a commercial sense.

You won the British Art Medal Scholarship in Rome in 1986 and went on to study sculpture. Was it a conscious decision to study something other than painting- different from your father? When I was on Foundation at Wimbledon, I realised it would be ridiculous for me to study painting and try for an unachievable goal i.e. to make a mark in the field where I would have barely a chance of equalling my father. I wanted to do something for me, about how I experienced the world that rang true to me. Sculpture, informed by that first sandpit experience seemed to be where I should be heading and that is where things led. I read that you centre much of your work

While I was at the Central I learnt that my prowess was with carving and modelling. I love having a multidisciplinary approach as this approach simulates life and ideas. Ideas come in many forms and the freer you are to respond the closer you are to finding an expression for the idea. At the Royal College of Art I took a Masters Degree by Project, where I wrote my own project and nominated the departments I required to access. I think it was the first multi disciplinary degree they had there. It does not suit me to be pigeon holed and I think cross-overs by default create originality. I was also doing some teaching at the RCA during that period, so I was crossing over from being a student to being a tutor.

With all of the shows and other achievements under your belt, what is your personal definition of success in art? My goal posts move at each achievement. If I did feel that I had arrived at success my work might ‘go off’ as it were. You need to be willing yourself to do your very best at each turn. What has been the biggest setback in your career to date? I try not to see things as setbacks but just opportunities to do things differently.

What has been your biggest achievement to date and what steps or process did you go through to achieve that? My solo show at the great Gazelli Art House gallery in Mayfair, next door to the arts club.

around psychoanalysis, which is especially interesting because of your great grandfather Sigmund. Could you explain a little about how you do this and why please? I am interested in the driving forces beneath the radar rather than the rationalised. My work comes out of and is informed by the unconscious forces in myself and the resonant collective unconscious forces that edge their way into the works, in the way the conduit mechanism works for many artists. I am informed by my use of materials in the same way. It is the way I see the world, through a psychoanalytic lens. I am pretty analytical. On completion of a work I tend to interrogate the ideas and contexts with a psychological slant examining these aspects as though the work itself were up for analysis! Sometimes a work may come out of asking a question of a material or process and looking deeply at that

I try not to see things as setbacks but just opportunities to do things differently question and its ironies and associated questions. Have you studied psychoanalysis at all? I studied psychology as part of my first degree. I have read a lot of psychology though as part of my research for my work and as a personal interest. What challenges did you face along the way and how did you overcome them? I was patient and worked all the time. If I had challenges along the way I can’t easily remember the detail of what they were. Being a positive person I have probably successfully blocked them out.

At this stage of your career, what is your ultimate ambition or dream for your work? To get a piece into the Tate, Tate Modern or National/ National Portrait Gallery has been a grand ambition since early childhood. Although this has been partly achieved it is never in the way you envisage. I dream of having a show at such a venue one day! What advice would you give to a young artist wishing to follow in your footsteps? Be true to yourself and maintain integrity. Don’t let yourself be put off by rejection. Keep your overheads low so that you can make art your priority. Don’t be afraid of investing in yourself as if you don’t no one else will! ambitious, intelligent, beautiful, aspirational and exciting young woman. So when Lime Magazine got the chance to speak to her about her achievements since claiming the crown for Miss Jamaica UK, it was clear to see that she has lived an enviable and animated life. In this interview Gemma talks of her work commitments, globe-trotting and what the future has in store. Congratulations on being crowned Miss Jamaica UK 2012, how has your life changed since you were announced as the winner? Thank you! There seems to be a lot of experiences and opportunities yet to encounter and although things have become very unpredictable and thrilling, the whole journey is a very humbling one.

How did you find the whole pageant process? As this was my first beauty pageant, I wasn’t sure what to expect but I enjoyed learning how to perfect my “catwalk” and represent Jamaica in events running up to the contest such as TriniJam by Caribbean Scene. All the training and preparation definitely helped to build my confidence.

You recently travelled to Jamaica, tell us a bit about your trip? I always love visiting Jamaica, I spent time with family, explored the culture in Kingston and received great exposure through Smile Jamaica on TVJ, “On The Road To Success” on CVM TV, Irie FM and others.

You’ve done a lot of travelling; tell us about some of the places you’ve visited? Whilst living in Thailand I fell in love with many countries in South East Asia that I was so fortunate to visit. Playing sports has seen me go to places like Australia and New Zealand and last year I explored a lot of Europe. I visited Egypt too, which was incredibleI’d love to see more of West Africa and also South America.

Surviving the 2005 Tsunami in Thailand is something you say has helped to shape your character. What was that experience like for you? Life changing. Life is so precious and it taught me the value and importance of the simple things in life. In this situation of crisis, my ability to communicate with those from a range of different cultures, backgrounds and languages also improved. Describe yourself in three words. Ambitious, compassionate and outgoing. Who inspires you? First and foremost, my parents. My father’s strength of spirit, focus and work ethic and my mother’s kind and compassionate nature. Everywhere I look, I am surrounded by inspirational figures; past and present. Someone I admire is Marcus Garvey who made a remarkable transformation to become such an iconic leader and orator. How do you plan to use your success from the pageant this year? Following my reign, I will continue to do my best to shine as an ambassador for Jamaica. I would love to be able to inspire other young people and involve myself in charitable work where possible. You’re no stranger to being on stage, tell us about Gemma the actress? I found my passion for acting when I was in school,

encouraged by my teacher I obtained a Drama Scholarship. I have toured Canada, performing with the Running Torch Theatre Company and now represent Great Britain as a Member of The National Youth Theatre. You were the red carpet presenter at the BEFFTA awards 2012 for Factory78. Tell us about some of your other presenting and hosting gigs? I started presenting in the summer of last year and have really enjoyed the varied events that I

have been able to attend with Factory78tv. My first encounter of hosting was at Mr & Mrs Runway 2012; the biggest editorial modelling event in the UK in conjunction with Select Model Management. This was an overwhelming first experience but I loved it nevertheless. Last year saw you achieve a First Class Honours in Business Management with Commercial Law from the University of Westminster, what’s next on your educational radar? Education has always been at the forefront for me and I hope to take that step further by committing to a Masters Programme in the near future.

How challenging was it when it came to organising your own promo tour? It’s not something that I have done before so I guess it was a new challenge but it taught me a lot about organisation and management. I did my best to network and made the most of everything that came my way.

Where do you see yourself in five years time? With a greater level of experience and knowledge in business and also within a personal capacity. I think that I am a big dreamer so hope to have achieved more towards my goals by then!

The Bodyguard Musical receives its world premiere at the Adelphi Theatre this year. The musical is based on the hit film of the same name, which starred Whitney Houston and Kevin Costner in a romantic tale of a music superstar Rachel Marron falling in love with her bodyguard Frank Farmer. The film’s soundtrack became as successful as the film, making ‘I Will Always Love You’ an instant classic. The film used a number of other Houston songs such as ‘Run to You’ and ‘I Have Nothing’ which are included in the musical adaptation. The musical is billed as ‘a romantic thriller’ and follows the plot of the movie closely. The score includes a host of Houston’s famous songs including ‘Queen of the Night’, ‘One Moment in Time’, ‘I Wanna Dance With Somebody’ and the immortal ‘I Will Always Love You’. pulse increasing, visual extravaganza that takes ballet and thrusts it into the world of Cuba where high tempo rhythms from Latin America and Africa hypnotise. Reviews have dropped the obligatory superlatives about the amazing dancing in the show choreographed by the talents of the renowned choreographers Roclan Gonzalez and Aaron Cash both hugely respected dancers. While their respective countries are as far away as could be (Roclan is from Cuba and Aaron from Australia), they have managed to work some magic and meet in the world of the “creatives” to bring the Revolucion! 22 LIME MAGAZINE 2013

Lime spoke to them in the lead up to the show at the Peacock Theatre on March 6th. Briefly what are your individual stories into the world of dance? Aaron: I started dancing at 8 years old. My mother decided I should be in dance class because I would dance to anything, even the lawn mower outside-strange kid! Roclan: As a child my mum taught me how to dance, that’s how it all started. Then I went to the National school of arts (ENA, Escuela Nacional de Arte) for 8 years. After school I was honoured to be working with Christi Dominguez, for me the greatest choreographer

ever and then started working with the TV Ballet company. How did your individual origins shape your musical flair? R: Cuba is an island full of music; music from Africa and from Europe/Spain, so Cuba has a big variety of rhythms. In Cuba there’s always music and dance, on the streets, everywhere. We’ve got that mix of rhythms in our heart and that helps to create this multi-culture in dance and music. A: I come from the south side of Brisbane Australia, raised in a very working class environment where men didn’t dance. I played rugby and cricket at a very high level along with learning Ballet, Jazz, and

Tap, plus the fact I’m 6’3”. My work is very diverse and masculine as a result I think of my experiences early in life. How did Ballet Revolucion become a reality? R: I’ve been working 10 years with Mark Brady and Jon Lee on many different shows. Ballet Revolución was our 5th show together. We selected and trained the dancers and musicians for this type of show. You can call Ballet Revolucion a result of the friendship of Mark Brady, Jon Lee and me which then brought me together with I am a complete novice to professional dance but I can do the running man! Why is it called Ballet Revolucion when

some of the other dance is not ballet? A: The name is meant to suggest in a fun way that this is not your regular ballet troupe performing Swan Lake. It is a little twist, a little bit more of a fusion of styles with ballet as the base. Hence a small dance revolucion if you will. R: For me Revolución means change. Ballet Revolución is also an explosion of energy. We are mixing very different styles into one show, that’s something different, something new from Cuba. What were the difficulties you faced in creating this show? A: No difficulties really my forte is classical, modern, Jazz, and Hip Hop where as Roclan’s strengths are Folkloric, Salsa, Cabaret, so we complimented each other well. R: I agree no difficulties at all! For me there are no boarders between artists,

we all live in the same country, in the country of creation, of entertainment. How have the two of you managed to combine your different styles to create this brilliant show? R: Each of us gave his style to the show, and that makes it very well balanced. It’s very interesting to see the different styles, if you’re working together so closely for several months. In the current show we both have our own pieces, there’s no piece we did together but we would love to do that in the future.

I note you both do not perform in the show why is that? A: As a dancer I had an amazing career, and performing for me now is not the same as it once was. Likewise my body does not want to be put through the rigorous training it used to go through day in day out when I was a young man. I get so much more from choreographing and watching the dancers bring my ideas and moves to life now. R: I have various projects at the moment. I am also preparing two other shows. If I would dance in the show, I’d need to fully concentrate on the show and spend all my time for it. At the moment I like to be creative and do various things. What do you hope the audience remember most about their experience of seeing the show? A: This show is a feel

good commercial dance show that makes dance accessible to everyone. It’s a celebration of what the human body can do through dance. These Cuban Dancers leave their heart and souls on the stage for two hours every night. You’ll come laid down with your daily woes and you’ll leave with a little bit of Cuban passion and inspiration in your heart and feat. R: Ballet Revolución for me represents the culture of Cuba and for all those young dancers it’s a chance to show the world the great talent of Cuban dancers. recently returning to London at The Peacock Theatre after a sell out run and five star reviews in 2011, I received an opportunity to catch up with lead choreographer and Tango World Champion, German Cornejo. In a show that features an exceptionally talented cast including three World Tango Champions. Flames of Desire tells the history of Tango, from its roots in the dance halls of Buenos Aires into one of the most popular ballroom styles today. In this interview German talks about his intense training in Buenos Aires and the passion and perserverance you need to be successful in the industry. Tango Fire’s Flames of Desire opens in January, what can they audience expect to see? The audience will meet a fresh show, but at the same time with a lot of character. With a cast that features ten of the best tango dancers including three world champions, the wonderful voice of Jesus Hidalgo, one of the most renowned singers of his generation and four great musicians who have played with the top tango stars. The show features a great display choreographic plus 40 costumes and a musical selection ranging from classic to vanguard. In few words- it will be a show full of emotions. How are preparations going, are you currently in rehearsal stages? Yes, we are in the last stage of rehearsals, putting the final details. Amalgamating the dance, with music and singing, and continuously cleaning the whole show to finally get a product of the highest quality. About the dance, we are rehearsing hard, looking at maximum coordination in group choreographies and a dance technique completely free of errors and vices. But also interests me that every scene keeps its essence, its climate. It’s not the same to dance

do, and above all things, be authentic artistic and creative.

a passionate, romantic or nostalgic scene. Approximately we spent on each tango (between stops to clear details) about four or five times, so it would be like to spend the show five times a day.

You’re a tango world champion, has dance been a passion of yours from a young age? Yes. Since I was very little, I have given myself completely to the dance. I started dancing Argentine folklore when I was nine years and then left it to starting dance tango at 10. Then I continued studying ballet, jazz and contemporary dance to complete my training. In the last 30 years the tango recovered its original strength that it had lost with the emergence of rock & roll. From “Tango Argentino” in the ‘80s -it was the first show that took the tango from the dance halls and put into the stage. The genre has regained vitality and presence not only in Argentina but also in the world. From the ‘90s that young people have returned to learn and dance tango. Nowadays

What has been your biggest achievement for you to date? Living successfully with what I love, which is dance and choreographing and that the audience enjoy my work as much as I do.

What was the highlight of 2012? Having worked with Jennifer Lopez, Marc Anthony, Jamie King and his entire creative team was definitely a great experience of 2012. I learned a lot with them. Jenny is an incredible person and a tireless worker. And that she reconvened us to dance as Guest Artists during her “LOVE- World Tour” was wonderful. What plans do you have for the year ahead? in the middle of technical rehearsals, and Kobna Holdbrook-Smith speaks to me with the calmness of a Sunday afternoon catch-up with an old friend. Maybe it’s because this is his fifth time at the Young Vic but I think it’s in his nature. Ironic really, considering his character in Feast revels in creating chaos. Feast is about three sisters separated by a mischievous trickster. Only a journey across continents and centuries can reunite them. Penned by five playwrights from Cuba, Nigeria, Brazil, the USA and UK the production tells the journey of Yoruba culture. Can you tell us a bit about Yoruba? It’s a whole belief system beyond simple explanation, it’s vast, intricate and human. I found it very magnetic working on the play, I thought I had a good understanding of the culture, but as I was researching and as the play progressed, I discovered so much more. Yoruba culture comes from the Ifa belief system. In Feast, you play the trickster God Esu who enjoys creating chaos. Tell us a bit about the role, what is it like to play, how did you prepare? It’s a delicious role for an actor to play. In cube

games geeks play, he’d be a grey wizard. He’s not noble or moral, sometimes he’s on your side and sometimes he’s not. I got to be something different in every scene. Because of this I got to experiment with the role, I turned up one day and did a scene in a Scottish accent. But this didn’t stick. I did suggest and try things that were included but I don’t want to spoil the piece by telling you what they are. Are you a bit mischievous yourself? I’m no stranger to mischief, but no-one knows it’s me. You’re not a stranger to performing at the Young Vic, what do you love about the theatre? I think the theatre lives up to its name, it’s concerned with finding the present expression of a play, it should be called the New Vic. There’s a sense of un-repeatability with the plays here. Everything else I’ve done at the Young Vic has been from classical playwrights, but here they find a nowness. You wanted to act from a young age but wondered if you’d be allowed to because your parents are very academic. What do they think about your career choice now? Yeah they love it; well it’s not going to change. What alarmed them first was,

like most artists, I had no food. They said, “Are you sure about this, wouldn’t you rather eat?” But when I was able to make a living it was fine.

You’ve acted on the stage and for TV, which do you prefer and why? What I love the most are plays and films, I’ve done some filming for Jesse Eisenberg’s new film ‘The Double’. I don’t have a major part but I got to play two characters. I really enjoyed getting into the detail of them. I enjoy this in theatre as well but I think film’s more exciting right now because it’s new for me.

What advice would you give to aspiring actors? Stand still and tell the truth. I think the most interesting performances come when you can’t tell the difference between the character and the actor.

You’ve previously said if you could live anywhere it’d be ‘New York, New York! Because if the world had a capital it’d be it’ does that mean you’re leaving our shores? I think America has to feature in a British actor’s life, especially if you’re not from the dominant culture. There’s more scope over there, people cast differently and there are more opportunities. If you ask people to name two black male actors from the UK, and you can’t say “That black guy from

It’s something I saw on Facebook years ago, so I started looking as well. I think the best I’ve seen are a pair of recycling boxes who looked like they were scheming and a startled building. So a little bit of housekeeping is the addition of the section ‘Put It On Repeat’ where I will give a focus on a track/s for the month that you just need to repeat rather like that disturbing scene in The Shinning where Jack Nicholson’s lengthy manuscript consists of the one line “All work and no play makes Jack a dull boy”. They will not necessarily be releases but just tracks you need to enjoy. Albums Gilles Peterson – Black Jazz Radio

compilations in his two decade history and this latest release comes from the short lived and enigmatic Black Jazz Records that was headed up by Gene Russell a huge jazz artist in his own right.

Here Peterson has gone through that six year catalogue of jazz releases on the label and picked his favourites for a 12 track bit of sumptuous niceness. I am not a knowledgeable jazz lover but my appreciation runs deep and this is a beautifully picked mix of some of the great tracks. It is probably a waste of time to try and pick out a favourite cut but tracks like Maiden Voyage sung by the vocally crisp Kelle Patterson is total class. The Black Jazz label which stopped when Gene Russell died is perfectly celebrated by Peterson. Release 11 February 2013

Gilles Peterson dj and label owner is the epitome of a music fanatic and while he is a lover of music he seems to have a penchant for jazz-his BBC 6 radio show highlights jazz in many of its different forms as well as rare records from other genres. Gilles has released many Singles Jessie Ware-Sweet Talk Jessie Ware the Mercury nominated singer just goes from strength to strength with her brand of dance enthused RnB sound. Sweet Talk taken from her hugely successful album Devotion does more of what everybody has constantly liked about her. She is fresh and her two 26 LIME MAGAZINE 2013

Mokkomba-Rising Tide It is great that currently there is such a fervour for music from the African diaspora. Having said that, contemporary African music which has commercial backing generally falls under the sub-genre of Afro beat which is just a fraction of the rich tapestry of African music. Brit nominations may see her come out victorious certainly in the Best Break Through category. Regardless of that however, she is embarking on a journey to make her name known in the US. With her style and sound there is a very good chance that she might break that difficult market. Out Now

The Zimbabwean group Mokoomba formed in 2001 therefore offer another dimension to African music with their brilliant second album Rising Tide their first being Kweseka. Produced by the influential instrumentalist Manou Gallo, Makoomba have an album that is a tour de force. The six man group seamlessly connect to bring a fusion of traditional Tonga African music meeting modern musicinstruments range from the traditional djembe to the saxophone! It’s intense compositions to more light hearted tracks like Mwile which is a fantastic mix of something akin to high life, meets Latin America. Rising Tide is an album that resists any notion of being classed as ‘World Music’ it’s just plain awesome music. Look out for the group who will hit the UK shores very soon. Kerogen-Broken Wing Kerogen is a producer who may not be known outside of the genres of Electronica, Trip Hop and Dub-step which he excels in. Whilst the genres obviously have a great many similarities making the fusion easier, Kerogen’s production skills are sublime to bring these genres in a beautiful

This group is extremely new but this ethereal track with a female vocalist that sounds something like Enya but with a much stronger voice is supreme. Zane Lowe and Annie Hobbs have already had this on repeat watch this space and be entranced by Hey Now. Duke Dumont ft A*M*E Need U

is not a problem because he’s more concerned with you knowing his music and indeed feeling the passion of each and every composition. His eponymous album on 2009 was hailed a huge success and garnered support and plaudits from such names as Nelly Furtado. The Cuban musician who is now a native of Canada has since won two Latin Grammy awards the most recent in 2012 and is now watching the support swell for his second albumRuido En El Sistema, or Static In The System. It is a journey through the many musical and geographical landscapes that shape and form Alex Cuba’s style and deliver with newfound clarity. More importantly it is his first album as an independent under his own label. Cuba has a rich musical history that must have shaped your first steps into music? Yes, I actually started in music when I was four years old. I went on a television show in Cuba with my father’s bands and I was playing an instrument called claves it is two pieces of wood that you hit on each other which is very important in Cuban music. When using this instrument you have to be so exact in your timing. I read that the catalyst for your song writing was being drafted into the Cuban army. That is right because in Cuba you are drafted

For me it is very important that what I do today is still seen as good music regardless of time to serve for a period of time. At the time I had a girlfriend who I was in love with before I went to the army. The tradition in Cuba is that if you have a girlfriend before you go into the army you let the girlfriend go because of course she may go with another man while you are there. If however she does love you then in Cuba we say she will come back to you. I was sad and so I wrote a song about how I felt. It is great that you sing in Spanish but does that limit a more global

success? I am still not that confident singing fully in English because it is not my native tongue. When I am singing I need to feel what I am singing about and so I choose to sing in Spanish. You will be surprised if you ask people about a song’s words many will not know them fully and so it’s the emotion of the song that stays with you. Your album Alex Cuba came in 2009 and then it has taken you three years to bring your following album why is that? With that album I was under the pressure of the label but now I have my own label so I took my time. So I expect it must be better now having autonomy and your own label. Definitely it is much better to be free from the pressures of a label or a major. The major is not

really interested in the music as such but rather about the music making money. As an artist if your creative output does not fit their model of what will make money then they are not likely to want it. For me it is very important that what I do today is still seen as good music regardless of time. How does this album show your progression as an artist? Well the thing is I never try to work for an album I just work all the time I am always thinking of writing and melodies. It was after a while of doing this that I felt it was time to go into the studio so it was not about progression it was just about feeling it was a right time. A more recent addition to my ultimate Valentine’s Day playlist; known for making some of the best R’n’B love songs in the music business, this is a beautiful song and classic Trey. Ciara- Promise (2006)

This song was released after singer Aaliyah’s shocking and sad death, off her self-titled album in 2001. ‘Rock the boat’ has sensual lyrics and it’s a nice track to play on repeat during the summer where the groove will transport you to paradise. Maxwell- Pretty Wings (2009) I absolutely love the lyrics to this song and for me it has to be turned up to get the full effects of Maxwell timeless voice. It’s a bittersweet love song about meeting the right girl at the wrong time and I think his voice is perfect. Oh and did I mention his voice? Marvin Gaye- Sexual Healing (1982) This song will never get old, recorded in 1982 this song is appreciated by pretty much everyone.

Marvin Gaye walked away with two Grammys for this track; Best Male R&B Vocal Performance and the instrumental version of the song won the Grammy for Best R&B Instrumental Performance. Bobby Valentino- Just Me and You (2009) Now I’ve heard several versions of this track by several artists, but in my opinion Bobby V does the job. This track is taken from his third studio album the Rebirth and I just love the lyrics to this song! Keith Sweat- Nobody (1996)

A bit of an oldie, but again this track will never tire. Keith Sweet’s smooth voice and deep tone makes this song one of my ultimate slow jam contenders. Maxi priest- The Art of Seduction (1998) Taken from the soundtrack for ‘How Stella Got Her Groove Back’ a saucy tale about Stella longing for love and companionship; starring Angela Bassett and Taye Diggs, this song pretty much speaks for itself. It’s very jazzy and I love the long instrumental at the start of the song.

Firstly what will people have to do to carry off the whole sultry Delilah vibe in this exciting competition to be you for a day? Ha-pretend no ones watching! I’ve just tried to have fun in all my videos and get into the music and the lyrics as much as possible so if they do that then they will carry it off. You have worked with Emil Nava who will be shooting the video for the competition, what is he like to work with and what is it abut his work that makes him such a great video director? Emil is great fun to work with. He’s very passionate and has great energy when your on set. That helps to keep your energy up when your director get excited about a take. Sometimes video shoots can be long days. Emil comes from a family of creatives. I worked with his brother Jake Nava too and they both know how to make an artist feel comfortable information of the camera. The Brits is an institution, what memories does it evoke for you and indeed was this something you dreamed of being on? The Brits is a major platform to announce

I can defiantly see my fanbase growing and I have some amazing new music coming this year so I hope interest from the public will continue to grow. As far as the media; in general I think they see I am about my music first and foremost, the rest of me is pretty normal. Are you looking towards the US and when do you think that might happen? Definitely!! I think the US is somewhere every artist wants to crack. At the moment I’m just focusing on finishing a new record. Once that’s ready the possibilities are endless.

just outside the home of the Gunners I meet the individual (not a group) Random Impulse who has the UK music scene going a little wacko for his mashup of grime rap come indie, come metal, punk music. It is of course not some amazing thing really to mash-up genres of music a sentiment that Random agrees with, “I did not even know that no one was doing that mix of music until recently. It is only when people started to make a big deal of it that I realised” but of course it is a big deal if no one else is even doing it! After success as a grime emcee where he put out two mix-tapes and productive work on early releases from names like Tinnie Tempah and Professor Green, Random’s tantalising taste of musical success was surely never going to be enough. Random in truth seems a bit of a maverick who “was never part of the crowd” as such; at school he was the clever kid that made people pay a tenner if they wanted that particularly pressing essay done. As we chill over a large sized mug of hot chocolate listening to the intermittent 32 LIME MAGAZINE 2013

I realised that the music that I was doing at that time did not reflect the music I liked as a whole because I listened to so much Indie and electro music and so I decided to play live instruments on my songs as well as the grime elements

His album which had Neil Comber (who has worked with Florence and the Machines) on production is certainly going to be highly sought after. The first single from that album is Overload which incidentally has a tasty remix featuring, Ed Sheeran, Wretch and Bluey Robinson who all drop a verse. Overload niftily skips along indie and grime showing great emotive lyrics as Random

single Overload. “Like I said I got into music really late and I am surrounded by my friends who have been signed before me and gone onto massive things like Ed, I am confident in my rapping ability but since things have taken off I have had to start running so to speak straight away

It is a song expressing my battle and basically saying that hard work can overcome adversity.” Look out for Random who will be headlining a gig at the renowned Cargo (February 28th) where he promised me “friendly moshing” and “some surprises”. schedule this month. First up is the Oscars, meaning we get the films that thought they were good enough, but in reality weren’t quite up to scratch.

Hyde Park on Hudson

There were high hopes for both Hyde Park on Hudson and Hitchcock, but neither film won the glowing reviews that were hoped for. Bill Murray is actually quite good in the former, but the sedate pacing makes it feel irrelevant given the energy of ‘Django Unchained’ or the sheer nerve-shredding tension in ‘Zero Dark Thirty’. Cloud Atlas boasts a stellar cast and is based on a highly-regarded novel, but it’s said to be an almighty misfire. The likes of Tom Hanks, Halle Berry and

Hugh Grant show up in this multi-strand story which covers centuries.

The other big event this month is Valentines Day. There are the requisite number of rom-coms but also a few unexpected treats. The fifth instalment of ‘Die Hard’ hits the screens, and this time it’s set to be ‘A Good Day to Die Hard’. Bruce Willis once again plays John McClane and this time he is joined by his on screen son taking on Russian bad guys. The fourth film in the series was a disappointment as it tried to move the action of the confines that had made McClane so watchable. Out for one day only, the re-issues of Moulin Rouge and Romeo & Juliet are sure to bring back memories. Baz Luhrmann is also going to be bringing ‘The Great Gatsby’ to the screen later this year, but here are two of his earlier films. Moulin Rouge is hugely entertaining and the musical genre is enjoying a resurgence given the success of ‘Les Miserables’. Now that Twilight and Harry Potter are done and

dusted, the search for the next teen franchise is on. ‘Warm Bodies’ is a zombie film which stars youngsters Nicholas Hoult and Teresa Palmer, and will be hoping to take off just as those other adaptations. There is also Beautiful Creatures, which is a film about, well witches. Both are squarely aimed at a young audience, but there is an apathy from the general public for forced series like these. It will be interesting to see how well they do. Antiviral is a body horror from the son of notorious body horror filmmaker David Cronenberg. Brandon’s latest looks at the ongoing obsession with celebrity culture and offers up a nightmarish take on where we are headed. It’s disturbing, and unfurls at a slow pace, but is rewarding.

Bruce and Arnie have already shown us what they have, with the latter turning up in the deliriously enjoyable ‘The Last Stand’ and now we get Stallone. ‘A Bullet to the Head’ looks like an old-fashioned buddy-cop movie, directed by Walter Hill. Hansel and Gretel: Witch Hunters stars two of the most productive actors in Hollywood. Gemma Arterton is always fun, even though her blockbuster hit rate isn’t so great. Jeremy Renner had a superb year last year, and this could another franchise for him to join alongside Mission Impossible, Bourne and The Avengers.

The same can be said of Chained, a dark study of evil from the daughter of David Lynch.

Finally there is the little seen Bullhead, which is something of a cult classic already. Matthias Schoenaerts, who was fantastic in ‘Rust and Bone’, takes the lead in this as well.

The Notebook (2004) “Behind every great love is a great story.”This is a fantastic romantic and passionate story about a young couple Allie Hamilton (Rachel McAdams) and Noah Calhoun (Ryan Gosling) with social differences who fall in love during the early 1940’s. They meet one evening at a carnival. But they are separated by Allie’s parents who disapprove of Noah’s un-wealthy family, and move Allie away. It’s a

Top Ten Valentine’s Day Films Whether it’s a soppy love story, chilling thriller or cheeky rom-com, there are so many films that could make it into my top ten. So in no particular order I present to you ten you might want to watch...

Never Been Kissed (1999) In this 90’s high school

comedy we see a young Drew Barrymore play a journalist who enrols at a high school as part of her research story. Pride and Prejudice (2005) This period drama based on Jane Austen’s timeless novel about five sisters - Jane, Elizabeth, Mary, Kitty and Lydia Bennet - in Georgian England

Valentine (2001) A horror film that tells the story of a geeky school boy who seeks revenge years later on four popular girls, who turned him down to dance at their school prom in 1988. The scariest part is that he rolls around town in a Cherub mask on Valentine’s Day, sends nasty threats and then plots to kill them all.

Double Wedding (2010) I recently came across this film starring Sister Sister Twins, Tia MowryHardrict and Tamera Mowry-Housley. This is a very cheesy love story also starring British actor O.T. Fagbenle, where the twins end up falling for the same guy. The Heartbreak Kid (2007) The Heartbreak Kid will have you in stitches. I absolutely love this film! It is hilariously funny and comedy at its best, starring one of my favourite actors Ben Stiller. It tells the story of a newlywed couple who believe they are perfect for each other only to go on honeymoon in Mexico where they realise that in fact they’re completely opposite. Something’s Gotta Give (2003) A brilliant rom-com starring Diana Keaton and Jack Nicholson. This film never gets old. It tells an unlikely story about a swinger on the cusp of being a senior citizen with a taste for young women who falls in love with an accomplished woman closer to his age. A few soppy moments but the rest is quality fun. P.S. I Love you (2007) Starring two Hollywood hotties Hilary Swank and Gerald Butler, it’s a romantic story about a young widow who discovers that her late husband has left her 10 messages intended to help ease her pain and start a new life. You’ll be blubbing away!

swift movement end the Civil War that has been ravishing his country. Daniel Day-Lewis plays the iconic role with great skill, he doesn’t rely of CGI or ludicrous props to get into character he simply “acts” tall to give us the Lincoln we have all read about in the past.

Les Miserables (12A)

Straight away it’s worth pointing out that this is a musical. That might sound obvious, but the amount of people who seemed to be baffled by the idea that EVERY line in this movie will be sung is alarmingly high. The plot is convoluted, seeing Jean Valjean (Hugh Jackman) unable to escape from his past mistakes, even after he has served time for stealing a loaf of bread. He is being hunted by ruthless man of the law Javert (Russell Crowe), who will seemingly stop at nothing to ruin the life of his prey. Into this ongoing battle enters Fantine (Anne Hathaway), a woman who has fallen on hard times after being left with a daughter and no source of income. Valjean becomes a surrogate father to the daughter, who grows up to become Amanda Seyfried. However, Javert is never far away, and he will never give up. Tom Hooper chose this as his follow-up to the awards-laden ‘The King’s Speech’, and it’s a surprise that he still feels like he has to play it safe. It’s not that this is a bad film, far from it, but it’s just that the direction and locations feel very static. Perhaps this is to do with the relatively small budget, or the stage background of the story itself, but there is something lacking somewhere. 36 LIME MAGAZINE 2013

It matters little when in the midst of the film though, rousing musical numbers and some great, heartbreaking moments, will linger long in the memory. Speilberg as opposed to the way Quentin Tarantino approaches the subject. A direct comparison isn’t really fair, but even if both men were given exactly the same script, you suspect Speilberg would end up with a film like this and Tarantino would deliver something like ‘Django Unchained’. ‘Lincoln’ is a wordy, political and procedural film which looks at the struggles of the titular President to abolish slavery and in the same

It’s a well-constructed story, not least because the few facts most people can quote off hand about this President are to do with his untimely death at the hands of an assassin. The real story, the achievement of the man, shouldn’t be lost in the mix. It could have all felt slow and ponderous, but there is a spark that the director manages to capture. It’s not limited to the leading man either, Tommy Lee Jones and Sally field also deliver great turns. The Oscar race just got interesting. Django Unchained Lime Rating: Words: Cassam Looch The latest film from Quentin Tarantino serves as a showcase for the best and worst elements of the directors distinctive style. On one hand you have the engrossing use of language, the unbridled visual flourishes of breathtaking violence and instantly addictive music cues. The trump card being three superb supporting turns that are each worthy of awards. Unfortunately you still get a silly and jarring cameo, a pointlessly excessive runtime and the uneasy sense of a five-star film shackled by the need to please the masses. Slave Django (Jamie Foxx) is forcefully purchased by travelling bounty hunter Dr King Shultz (Christoph Waltz). However, unlike previous owners, Shultz promises freedom if Django is willing to help capture a gang of ruthless

killers. Django has a history with these wanted men, and so agrees with the additional incentive of it bringing him closer to his wife (Kerry Washington) who was also traded. Eventually the unlikely pairing of the Doctor and the Slave arrive at the home of Calvin Candie (Leonardo DiCaprio), a man swimming in a pool of racist ideologies hidden behind a veneer of violent sport. His home, known as Candie Land, is also where we find Stephen (Samuel L Jackson). Stephen is a house slave who is arguably more brutal than the white people around him. Django now has a chance to buy back his wife, but will he and the liberal Shultz be able to stomach the vile surroundings they find themselves in for long enough to make a clean escape? The film is set up like a revenge thriller, but it soon deviates into a

more character-driven piece. We get three great supporting turns, all of which deserve kudos and recognition. Christoph Waltz is fantastic, using elaborate enunciation to make the best of an already high quality script. Waltz is arguably even better here than in ‘Inglorious Basterds’, his previous collaboration with Tarantino that saw him win an Oscar. Regular Tarantino star Samuel L Jackson is hilarious in the role of Stephen. The character represents the opposite side of the coin to Django, and is all the more evil for it. Thankfully, Jackson adds his own distinctive style to the role and it keeps you watching even when the film drags towards the final half an hour. The final act would frankly be a write-off if it wasn’t for the phenomenal Leonardo Dicaprio. Calvin Candie plays it smooth, but his desperation to climb the social ladder paired

with an inability to match Shultz’s intelligence, make for a fiery scene late on. Bizarrely, the one person lost in the mix is Django himself. Foxx becomes something of a passenger and his mission loses focus at points. The film comes together with great panache and Tarantino constructs a perfect finale, so it’s a shame that he himself can’t see it. Either that, or he lacks the restraint to end proceedings when he should. Dragging us along with him towards the three hour mark, the director falls short of creating the ultimate genre film, instead he has manufactured a hugely enjoyable romp with some memorable performances. It’s that time again, prepare for late nights and long acceptance speeches WORDS: CASSAM LOOCH

his year it’s an open

film appears to have tag of favourite. There is no ‘Avatar’ or ‘King’s Speech’ to dominate, and as such things could well get very interesting.

Early word is that the surprisingly good ‘Silver Linings Playbook’ could nab some of the acting awards. At first, it’s something of an unlikely choice as both leads are known for more mainstream fare. That, coupled with the fact that they are frankly too young and too attractive to be considered the usual type of winners might actually work in their favour if the academy looks to overturn it’s “stuffy” reputation. Bradley Cooper and Jennifer Lawrence have paid their dues in different ways and co-star Robert DeNiro might help out on the experience front. ‘Les Miserables’ also has pedigree, but something

might be amiss this time around. Tom Hooper could be overlooked in favour of the ensemble cast. Musicals either do really well, or are totally overlooked, there is no middle ground when it comes to this genre. If you were looking for a safe bet, then Spielberg and Daniel Day Lewis represent the Fort Knox of gambles. ‘Lincoln’ is very much the type of film that does well at the awards, but again there is no real barrage of publicity that seems to be behind it. Yet. The supporting roles in ‘Django Unchained’ are very strong, and could well see DiCaprio fighting it out with Waltz, much as they do in the violent showdown of their movie. Waltz just shades it in my opinion, but it really is

time that DiCaprio won something for his great work in recent years. ‘Argo’ might seem like it was released ages ago, and it hasn’t been the blockbuster that some had predicted, but it is going to be a contender. Affleck might still come across as to much of a young pup to be given the directing gongs, but the cast is so good that we feel like it will sneak a win or two somewhere along the way. Denzel Washington could be in with a chance for ‘Flight’, a film we haven’t seen yet but that we have been reliably informed sees the star doing what he does best. Another film loaded with talent is ‘Hitchcock’ which has Sir Anthony Hopkins and Dame Helen Mirren pairing up for a look at the great director of the title. They LOVE that sort of stuff over at the Academy. Ang Lee has won before with ‘Brokeback Mountain’ and his successful adaptation of another novel could see him repeat the trick.

‘Life of Pi’ is a treat, and visually it stands apart from all of the other films we’ve seen this year. It’s a shame that ‘Cloud Atlas’ seems destined to fail, the book is superb but the casting of charisma-free Hugh Grant could have done for it. Another contender should be ‘Zero Dark Thirty’. Director Kathryn Bigelow documents the hunt for Osama Bin Laden with Jessica Chastain in the lead role. Both ladies can expect to be nominated, and perhaps even a chance of the win in their respective categories. Also expecting to do well will be John Hawkes for ‘The Sessions’. His is the stand out performance in an otherwise forgettable film. We’re also delighted to see ‘Searching for Sugar man’ doing well in the documentary categories, and who knows, we might even get to see Adele belt out the ‘Skyfall’ theme on the biggest stage of them all. Party, I caught up with the accomplished international DJ Karizma. His works with Basement Boys productions has seen him remix the likes of Lenny Kravitz, Bob Sinclar, Kathy Brown, Jocelyn Brown, Ministers de la funk to name a few. Karizma has even struck out on his own and formed Kohesive Productions after a healthy career of remixes and productions. In this interview he talks about his love of music, collaborations, top DJ’s to look out for this year and what’s next on his radar. You started your career as a DJ pretty young. Had this always been your number one priority? Not really... I was supposed to be a minister, but I think God had other plans for me much to the dismay of my mother. I didn’t really know how I was going to break into the music biz but I knew I would be involved in some way. I was lucky enough to have my grandmother who would go to flea markets and pick up vinyl and my

aunt who would give me her vinyl every year or so when she would upgrade her collection. I think that’s what prepared me for what was coming. What is your favourite genre of music? I don’t really have a favourite because I was brought up listening to all kinds of music, so I always thought that the music I make or play should reflect that. Striking out on your own you formed Kohesive Productions, how did this come about? When you are in a collective of production teams, you can learn and grow, but with growth sometimes there’s separation. I knew the only way for me to feel completely whole as an artist was to get out there and do it for myself ... succeed or fail. Kohesive Productions was the vehicle for that. I’ve been blessed to be able to put my expressions (music) out and have a career and as a DJ I could see firsthand how my music affects people.

Tell us about some of the DJ’s and producers that you have worked with. I’ve worked with DJ Spen, Simbad, Atjazz, DJ Spinna, Rich Medina, Taylor McFerrin, Osunlade, Neil Pierce, Giles Peterson... the list could go on Who would you like to collaborate with next? Soul Clap, Ryan Leslie, Ogris Debris, Andre Lodemann, Eric Lau, Cajmere, Fred Everything, Charles Webster, Marc de Clive Lowe...out of those the least likely to happen is Ryan Leslie...but I’m allowed to dream. [Laughs] What tips would you give to a wannabe DJ? Always play from your gut, make sure you tell a story with music (something I think is lost in the new breed of djs) and never be afraid to take risks...If you are playing the same top ten as everyone else how are you making yourself stand out from other DJ’s. What DJ’s are hot right now? Sean McCabe, Atjazz, Craig Smith.

What has been the highlight of 2012 for you? Seeing my “Best of Karizma” album on display like real art. Let me explain- I released a best of collection and I wanted to do something different, so I hand painted all 500 covers so that every one of them would be unique and it was also my way of giving my friends and fans a part of myself. I started in 2011 and it took me the whole year to complete but it was a journey I will never forget. What have you got lined up for the New Year? I have a new album coming out on R2 Records, a mix CD for Quantize Records (DJ Spen’s label). I’m working with Atjazz to finish more stuff under our production team Exist and I’m starting my Kollaborations album as well. Don’t make a fuss about Valentine’s Day My dearest wife is always going on and on and ON about NOT making a fuss over her on Valentine’s Day. She repeats that it’s the thought that counts. Well, I put a lot of thought into the gifts from previous February 14ths but she didn’t quite take to any of them like I assumed she would. Here’s my list - see what you think: - Brand new mop and bucket. I was thinking it would be fun to see what colour the floor was because I couldn’t remember. - Romantic dinner at fast food restaurant. I was thinking that she might like to go inside for a change instead of fetching dinner at the drive through. - Chocolates left-over from last year’s candy box. I was thinking of how proud she’d be of me for not wasting food. She’s been nagging me for years to recycle. - Midnight moped ride through the park. I was thinking that I’m getting too old to be peddling on the bike. - Dozen roses printed on high quality photo paper. One of my favourites this I was thinking these would last a lifetime instead of just a week. - 45 second back massage. I was thinking any longer and she might think I was interested in something else.
