July World Pride 2012 Pride London is proud to host WorldPride 2012. London has been chosen to host this year’s WorldPride parade which means the celebrations will be bigger, better and prouder than ever. London ZSL - Zoo Lates Words: Victoria Woode Lime Rating: Another Friday night in the early days of summer, what better to do than head to the zoo for the start of London ZSL - Zoo Lates. Upon arrival we were greeted by umpteen smells… no not animals but endless varieties of international street food from Spanish, French, Indian, Japanese, Ghanaian, Mexican, and American and of course British. Once we had devoured our spicy bean filled burritos my friend and I headed to the penguin beach hut. I spotted at least 20 penguins in the distance simply chilling out, enjoying their evening and not living up to the Happy Feet fairy-tale! A small talk and quiz was being held here by the Zoo staff. To be honest the general stats about my penguin friends didn’t captivate me so I headed away swiftly to see what else the zoo had to offer!

Festival of the World with MasterCard opens on 1 June 2012 for the Diamond Jubilee Weekend, and closes on 9 September 2012. As London welcomes the world this summer, Southbank Centre’s Festival of the World will include inspirational projects from the UK and around the world, which showcase the power of the arts to change the lives of individuals, communities and whole societies. Lime’s essential guide to the Olympics! Ihosting the Olympic

and Paralympic Games a number of events are taking place across the capital and as the first medal event is underway, Lime has some helpful tips to prepare you for the event of the summer! It’s the biggest sporting event on the planet; with 26 sports, 10,500 athletes and millions of spectators; it’s definitely going to be a busy summer.

Things you need to know: Going to a London 2012 sports event or ceremony? Take as little as possible with you as you’ll need to go through checks on arrival. In most cases you may take one mediumsized soft-sided bag into venues – this should fit under your seat or in your lap. Be aware that there are some items considered prohibited and restricted, if you’re unsure check with staff at the venues as some items may disrupt competition, obstruct the view of other spectators or create a safety hazard. July Olympic opening Ceremony The Opening Ceremony is a celebration showcasing the best of the Host Nation. It also features a parade of all competing nations and the highly anticipated entrance of the Olympic Flame, which ignites the Cauldron and signals the start of the Games. The eyes of the world will be on London for the Opening Ceremony of the London 2012 Olympic Games. The name of the Olympic Opening Ceremony show will be ‘Isles of Wonder’ and the Ceremony will kick off with the sound of the largest harmonically tuned bell in Europe, produced by the Whitechapel Foundry, and the Stadium will be transformed into the British countryside for opening scene ‘Green and Pleasant’, which includes real farmyard animals. The Ceremony will also include a special sequence celebrating the best of British, featuring volunteer performers from the NHS.

August Olympic Closing Ceremony The Closing Ceremony celebrates the achievements of athletes at the London 2012 Olympic Games, and includes a Handover from one Host City to the next. In 2012, London will hand over to Rio de Janeiro for the 2016 Olympic Games. The Closing Ceremony also features the extinguishing of the Olympic Flame, signalling the end of the

Games. The Closing Ceremony of the Olympic Games will be titled ‘A Symphony of British Music’, to celebrate the fact that music has been one of Britain’s strongest cultural exports over the last 50 years. The worldwide broadcast of the Ceremony will feature more than 4,100 performers, including 3,500 adult volunteers and 380 schoolchildren from the six east London Host Boroughs. August Paralympic opening ceremony The performances will celebrate the Paralympics, London’s culture and everything the capital has to offer. The show is set to open with a fly past by ‘Aerobility’, a British charity that trains disabled people to become pilots, and will feature over 3,000 adult volunteers, over 100 child volunteers and a professional cast of over 100.

• 1 pound of chicken pieces • 5 Carrots • 2 tbsp smooth peanut butter • 1 tsp Black pepper • Salt (as desired) • Chicken seasoning • Additional ingredients: • Basmati rice (Serves 4) To begin prepare and marinate your chicken pieces with salt, pepper and chicken seasoning. After an hour, use a non- stick saucepan to fry the chicken until tender and brown, and then remove. Next peel your potato and slice it into chunky wedges ready to fry in the remaining oil, do

East London chefs launch ‘Dalston’ Cola, the ‘Real’ Thing Dalston Cola is an original take on the ever popular cola. Made using Kola nuts, the ingredients reputedly used to make the original Coca Cola, the similarities between the origins, look and feel of the two drinks end there. In the same year that a certain global drinks brand is set to dominate the capital with sponsorship of London 2012 Games, two East London chefs have chosen to launch the ‘Real’ thing. Chef and founder of The Russet Cafe in Hackney Downs, Steve Wilson conceived Dalston Cola in March 2010. Steve formed The Treehouse kitchen with business partner Duncan O’Brien in

this until golden brown. By now you would have set both your chicken and potatoes aside to make a start on your stew. First chop your onion, peppers and carrots and add them to your saucepan. Add your plum tomatoes and leave to fry. Now put in your chicken and potatoes, by this time the aromas would have your belly rumbling! Add water and bring to the boil, here goes- it’s time for that all important ingredient two tablespoons of smooth peanut butter, stir well. If the stew appears too thick, more water can be added. Lastly add your tomato puree for colour, allow it to simmer, and then serve with boiled rice and vegetables.

This month the brand new Chamucos Clubhouse based at Notting Hill’s Crazy Homies. Named after acclaimed restaurateur and entrepenuer Tom Conran’s new super premium Tequila Chamucos, the bar will be a dedicated tequila lounge serving great cocktails made with the new cult tequila of choice. It’s décor will be inspired by the jungle and beaches of Mexico by night and features graffiti and motifs of the little Chamucos devil throughout! All drinks served will be made with Chamucos Tequila which is distilled using only 100% weber blue Agave which has been created through combining both ancient and state of the art techniques. It is made in the alpine forests of Mazamitla in Jalisco with water drawn directly from the mountain rock, and only choice Piñas. My guests and I tucked into a sweet, crab bisque, Wild Highland Pigeon Breast with Leek, Mushroom and Parmesan Risotto, Lobster and the absolutely gorgeous Venison Haunch Fillet with Triple Cooked Chips and a Redcurrant and Port Jus which we all hailed as a beautiful success-generous portions of venison were devoured with vigour. Pudding was a chocolate brownie which unfortunately was not served warm but was nevertheless tasty. It’s reasonably priced with a three course meal at thirty pounds per head and a menu that changes weekly means diners are promised a pleasant surprise when they return. Staff were attentive and on speaking to a couple it became clear that all the staff were acquainted

My guest and I were stunned to find such a prominent venue on a busy highroad in the middle of Fulham. In an area that is well known for boutiques, bars and brassieres, Lowcountry is a new addition to the chain of American, Southern and East Coast dining experiences. On appearance the restaurant was decked out with a raw smokehouse theme; cow-print walls, wooden floors and a large rustic bar. We were seated on a booth reminiscent of a 50’s diner in front of a vision complete with red leather bar stools around

drizzled in sauce as the menu didn’t give much away. What we got was a scoop of rich chocolate ice-cream, pecans and chocolate sauce. The bitterness of the pecans was far too harsh for my palette and I felt as though i could taste elements of a fine cognac streaming through the sauce. Although I admire the innovation it was a bit of a bold finish for me. To sum up, the service was great and venue

Her innovative designs and cuts have made her highly sought after-shows for London Fashion Week and features on CNN are just the tip of the bubbly designer’s CV. Kiki kindly gave me a bit of time to talk fashion (of course), the truth behind the glamour and her next

It seems you were destined to be involved in fashion in some way? I guess so. I began as a five year old model with my twin sister on a TV show. Then I began modeling professionally when I was discovered by FORD modeling agency at the age of 19 and began modeling professionally. I always designed my own clothes which would draw attention from strangers in fashion conscious cites such as Tokyo and Paris. Totally unfulfilled,

I decided to focus on my passion, creating wearable art and I have not looked back since.

What is your current collection? My fall/winter 2013 Collection is called Elegance Meets Attitude. I have returned to my love of prints and continued with my affair with luxury stretch fabrics. I also used dip dyed chiffon to bring out the Kiki Kamanu woman’s sensuality-bold reds blend delicately with black stretch lace which hug a woman’s curves effortlessly.

How hard is modeling and the business of fashion particularly from a designer’s point of view? Fashion design is a constant challenge because you have to continue reinventing yourself, and remaining relevant to your clients. As soon as my collection comes on the runway I am already planning the next one- no rest for the weary. As a former model, the most challenging aspect was to always keep your eye on the prize which is keeping the client happy. Is the fashion world as glamorous as it seems? It is very glamorous once the work is done but some people go in there and they are tired or suffering from the effects of the night before but it is a job and so once you are professional then the life of the fashion industry can be fantastic. Is the fashion world inherently racist or is that a misconception? When a client/campaign comes to the agency they will say we need thirty models two blondes, two black, one Asian and two brunettes. People think it is the agencies that are like that but it is not it is the campaigns that make these particular requests. The industry is colour based I do not want to say racist but at the moment that is how the market is. Have things improved despite what people may think? There have been vast improvements in the last ten to fifteen years with the amount of black models or dark skinned models doing campaigns like Victoria Secrets. Asian models who are dark are also doing

What can we expect from your next season of clothing? For my summer 2013 I plan to continue with my prints and possibly with a lot of silk and chiffon. What do you think will be the trends for next year? Definitely prints!

There is not one type of body and I really do not like the term “real women” because not all women are size16 and not all women are size 4

That is what I started out with and that is what I maintain with all my collections.

On another issue what are your feelings about the term “real women”? There is not one type of body and I really do not like the term “real women”

of Africa Fashion Week London (AFWL) returns on 3rd and 4th August 2012. Following the unprecedented success of last year’s debut event, AFWL has relocated to London Spitalfields, recent winners of a Best New Open Space award. This year’s event is set to be bigger and better with a larger venue, more designers and tons more exhibitors. This will be the first large scale event to showcase UK and nonUK based seasoned and emerging fashion designers inspired by Africa. The showcase debuted last year with an impressive turnout of over 4,700 attendees, the two day extravaganza created an unparalleled platform for over 50 international designers to showcase their collections. With the Olympics this year, all corners of the world will be focusing on what London has to offer, on and off the race tracks. BWest Africa, Romuald orn in 1962 in Benin,

Hazoumè, is considered one of Africa’s leading visual artists. A winner of the prestigious 2007 Arnold-Bode-Prize at Documenta 12 in Germany, Hazoumè first came to the attention of the wider art world in 1992, when his politically astute works were first exhibited at the Saatchi Gallery’s “Out of Africa” show. Already a full time artist by then, Hazoumè’s works have since been shown in major museums and galleries all over the world and has works in the collections of the likes of David Bowie and Iman. Romuald Hazoumè was kind enough to take time out from hanging work at another show to discuss his thoughts and feelings about art, his career and success in the run up to his highly anticipated London show.

I read that you came to prominence in 1992 when you did the Saatchi Masks show. Could you tell me what lead you to that point? When I was in my last year at school they lost my paper for the final exam. I was very angry and I left school. For four years after that, I just made art. I asked people to show what I was doing. They refused me many times, so it was about seven years before I had my first show. I was very surprised that André Mernier came and bought 18 LIME MAGAZINE 2012

André Mernier was in Africa because he and Jean Picote, the owner of one of the most prominent collections of African art in the world, were trying to find artists for an exhibition in Paris. That is how I ended up at the Saatchi show. David Bowie was there, saw my work and bought some later on. I now travel around the world and make exhibitions.

You said that David Bowie was at that show. How did that show then change your career, your life? My career is changed by me. I met David Bowie in 1995 in Johannesburg. It was very good for me because he bought two pieces of mine for Iman. It was a funny story because usually, you can not talk directly to someone like David Bowie! I played with that so that he needed to talk to me! He talked to me directly and said, “OK, lets talk, I will buy!” After

that, we spoke for about one hour. It was crazy! I love his music and I told him, you know, I love your music and I never have a discount when I buy your music! I don’t want to put a discount on my work. He just said, “Forget it, I don’t want a discount, I will buy immediately.” He paid me the same week. He did not get the piece until eight months after. I asked him why he trusted me. He said, “Because I know you and I know there will be no problem.” That was the story behind David Bowie

Because we have something we call art too! It is not only Western people who have that. We have very interesting, strong pieces and we need to show them. When I become very well know, I think it will be because I have something to say. So it seems that you closely identify your success as an artist with your identity as an African. Yes!

and this story helped me a lot because when somebody who is well known buys your pieces, it is good for you. It makes publicity. What does success in the art world mean to you? As an African, we do not have to be like European people. The art scene is a big group for artists. They need you inside this group if you can show something very new, original or clever. But what we have to show today is our culture.

What is your biggest success to date? When I won the Documenta prize, I was so happy that I cried. I cried because it was so hard to get there. I just had to thank so many people because this was a very well known prize. When I got another prize, again, I said thank you. It pushed me to get better. Would you say that the Documenta prize was your biggest achievement? Yes. What would you say was the hardest set back that you have had and how did you overcome it? Well, every well known person has somebody behind him. If it is a man, it may be a wife that he has

behind him who helps him to be well known and helps with other things so that he can work. What I regret the most is the loss of my first wife. She helped me to be a success because she took care of our children so that I could work peacefully and travel a lot. However, one day, ten years ago, she just died suddenly. It happened so quick. Within five minutes, I lost my wife. We were at a party and she had an aneurysm. I was left with two small children. It must have been difficult. I am so sorry to hear about that... Thank you. What is your biggest aspiration going forward for your work? It is not about art because one of my dreams has been made reality in Benin. It was the possibility to show our work in Benin and we achieved that with a new foundation which has been working for the past seven years. That was my dream, to have a museum where we could put on exhibitions. So today, my big dream is not really about art, it is about how we can get leaders in Africa to be more responsible. How can we get leaders in Africa to be less corrupt and more respectable? That is my dream and it is a big dream. It is a big dream, I donâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t want to be a politician because I hate that because I donâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t know how to lie! Your work could somehow contribute to your dream becoming a reality. Yes! That is what I try to do. What advice would you give to an up and coming artist wishing

to follow in your footsteps? The first thing is never follow money, just be yourself. Never think that what people are doing in Western art is what you need to do. Have something to say, but know that it will be very very difficult. And to accept that but still keep going. Yes. Yes. was fantastic complete with London bus stops, a parade of East End corner shops; in addition to the glitter, sparkle, flowers and lights. An entertaining night for all; the musical ended with a show-stopping dance and powerful song! Overall it was a great production, from the cast to the stage and the catchy Bollywood bangers; it was undoubtedly one musical that exhilarated culture and highlighted the contemporary British Asian arts scene and their impeccable performing talent. Ragtime effectively portrays the struggle of immigrants during 1900 -1920’s America. The main characters strive to make a meaning to an ends but get constant knock backs with no support from their new community or from the law enforcements. The large cast was extremely strong both dramatically and vocally. The staging was an impressive war torn amalgamation but a little confusing as it featured a burnt out Obama poster whilst maintaining a war torn image with various props from the past seven decades. There were a few concurrent character stories, so paying full attention was key! I found myself really warming to the characters;

in particular the comical grandpa ‘Jo Servi’ who wasn’t afraid to speak his mind. Grandpa is part of a wealthy family who have increasingly different views of ‘coloured folk’. Some would say that the story of Ragtime is slightly depressing but don’t worry there’s a semi-Happy ending. There are a few revolutionary changes within the society that lead to the continued progression of non White Anglo-Saxon Protestants. As an overall experience I really enjoyed attending the Regents Park Open Air Theatre and would recommend it to lovers of the arts and the outdoors. Wah! Wah! Girls Lime Rating: Words: Vernia Mengot In this brand new British Bollywood musical I was definitely prepared for a glitzy production with plenty of song and dance; which was exactly what I got. Wah! Wah! Girls told the story of Indian Mujra dancers who have entertained rich and powerful men for generations with enchanting music and passionate dance. The production drew audiences into a modern day British-Asian community set in the East End, where there were timeless occasions for laughter. I loved the character Bindi played by Rina Fatania, her cheeky lines and busy body nature was endearing to watch. I also really liked the interaction with the audience; It kept me engaged and at the edge of my seat. Although the plot was a little muddled, I eventually found myself cottoning on once the underlying storyline came to light. The set

Now, Theatre Royal Stratford East announces an exciting opportunity for new, emerging and existing UK-based artists of Nigerian descent and artists residing in Nigeria aged 18 - 35. Theatre Royal Stratford East will bring together fresh, dynamic perspectives from the art forms of theatre, dance, film animation, poetry, spoken word, and music. 30 Nigeria House also reflects Nigeria’s recognition of its talented people and aspirations to develop the Creative Industries in Nigeria, which are strongly emerging sectors. The Federal Government of Nigeria therefore, through one of its key development agencies, has developed an artistic collaboration with Theatre Royal Stratford East. This new project aims to assist 30 artists in developing a new piece of work through an award of £3,000 each; an example of continued commitment to new writing and new artists by Theatre Royal Stratford East and Nigeria.

The chosen 30 will attend the launch of the Nigeria Hospitality House (Nigeria House) for the London 2012 Olympic Games and 8 of these artists will participate in an event to share their work as part of Nigeria House, which is located at the theatre in August. R Kelly – Share My Love Robert Sylvester Kelly is back after a fairly long hiatus when you consider that two years or so back R Kelly was literally everywhere. His recent operation on his throat kept him out for most of last year but he’s back with this cut Share My Love taken from his recently released album Write Me Back. It’s a track that instantly makes you think of Step In the Name Of Love (2003) being a soulful smooth bit of quintessential Kelly awash with pure class and those old skool classic sounds. It’s a slightly faster track than Step In The Name Of Love but this track will have old and young jamming together-it’s amazing how authentically old skool he makes the track sound. Look out Kelly looks hugely invigorated and do not for one minute think that the Kelly that dropped tracks like Feeling On Yo Booty (2000) and Thoia Thoing (2003) is getting a little more sexually sedate in his forty fifth year oh no Kelly will be dropping a follow-up album called Black Panties in 2013! Macy Grey – Sail Another veteran of the music game who has been quiet for a bit of time returns with her sixth album, Covered which

sees Macy as you might expect covering one can only assume tracks that she loves. The latest release from this album Sail is a cover of the original by a rock, electronic band called AWOLnation. Macy’s version is not as dark and moody as the original and whilst it is great to see her Macy back with her distinctive vocals it’s a shame that she did not come with some original material-this album feels more of an attempt to make sure that Macy stays relevant-expect a follow album of her own material soon. Out Now Plan B – Lost My Way So Plan B continues his jaunt across all mediums of the entertainment world-he already has his first film Ill Manors out which unfortunately has taken a royal pasting but at least from a musical perspective he is still well on top of the game. His latest single from the Ill Manors album, Lost My Way is unleashed and I do mean unleashed for it is a fiery, socio polemic bit of bars galore vocals about a youth lost in a wilderness of issues. It is a pertinent track considering what we are led to believe in the news and whilst one needs to be careful about jumping on the band wagon of a lost dis-

enfranchised youth ready to self-implode it is still a track that once again proves the talent of Plan B who has shown a rough edge and his more classy edge all whilst maintain credibility.

Plan B evidently has the ability to change at the drop of the hat a talent that should keep him in the public eye for a long time. Look out for the remix featuring the cerebral Raekwon from Wu Tang who manages to take the original track and make it grittier if you can imagine. Released 2nd July Florence and the Machine – Spectrum Last up are the rather great Florence and The Machines who have gone

from underground artists to the darlings of British pop culture and music in just under three years. Performances at literally every festival you can think of and performances on iconic and influential programmes like Jools Holland have taken their name outside the UK shores and into a more global perspective. Having seen her live I have to say there is a great deal of engaging theatre when they perform. Anyway their latest venture Spectrum in truth does not strike up any real surprises but it will add to her tally of high achieving hits. It has ‘constant radio play’ written all over it with a strong hook and chorus, rousing synths, some beautiful harp riffs and of course Florence’s rather stirring vocals. Released 9th July

Dismantle – Hotly tipped as one of the young producers and DJʼs to emerge from the UK Bass scene. Since signing with Digital Soundboy this year, Dismantle; Brighton based Will Knighton, is set to release his first official EP ‘Warp’. Already featured in Annie Mac’s Minimix on Radio 1 he has also been supported by the likes of Mista Jam, Skream & Benga and Eddy Temple Morris and picked out as one to watch by a whole host of names. Probably best known to date for his massive track ‘Computation’, Dismantle is still only in the early stages of his career despite already releasing on huge labels such as Caspa’s Dub Police. Regarded

as one of the most hotly tipped young producers and DJʼs to emerge from the UK Bass scene, his tracks are blurring the lines between house, dubstep and drum and bass. You can catch him across the UK and Europe, including appearances at this year’s Ibiza Rocks, Outlook, Lovebox, Hideout and Global Gathering festivals. Info: Release date 15 July

Known as the face of British Gospel, Muyiwa’s concert at the HMV Apollo brought the crowds out in their thousands. People from far and wide queued for hours to partake in making history and watch Muyiwa and Riversongz, with supported guests as it was broadcasted live to the US and African television networks. Although it was off to a late start, the audience didn’t grow inpatient, which was a change to the usual concert ordeal I was used to. It was clear ‘’this place is ours for the night’’ quoted by Muyiwa himself- with the help of the audience it was an arena filled for praise and worship.

The headlining and supporting acts did their best to uplift the audience and get them moving and shaking to a variety of gospel hits;

including artists Edwin Fawcett, Latin sensation Rony Padilla and Rebecca, who showed no holding back in her performance which got majority of the audience on their feet. After a short interval Muyiwa appeared on stage accompanied by Riversongz and was later joined by global acts including Chinese gospel singer, Michelle Cheung, acclaimed Indian percussionist Pandit Dinesh, plus the Voice UK’s very own Joelle Moses. Where they transported us ‘All Around the World’ with their powerful songs of Christian worship. The music had the crowds joining in a harmonious chorus, as beautiful voices filled the room- the feeling was incredible. To close the show the much anticipated Mobo Award winning rappers Guvna B and Victizzle joined Muyiwa for a smash hit and even managed to slide in an Azonto which got the audience breaking it down in the house of the Lord. It was a phenomenal evening which brought together Christians from all over to unite and glorify! A commendable night; showing a definite promise of more to come. singer and songwriter; his distinctive rich, deep singing voice and unique “spoken word” monologues/raps have seen him become the first-ever international act to perform on America’s popular entertainment channel, BET, for the prestigious annual Celebration Of Gospel show, and continues to be award for his proud list of achievements. The Station Director of Premier Gospel has also won numerous awards, including Best Presenter at the Oasis Awards (2006), Best Radio Show and Best Contribution to Gospel Music at the Gospel Music Awards (2009). Alongside his group Riversongz they’ve reached number five on Amazons World Music BestSellers, with their album ‘Declaring His Name all around the World’ which was produced by Grammy Award winning Kevin Bond back in 2011. In this interview Muyiwa talks about growing up in London, the power of Gospel and his all time favourite African musician. You grew up in Nigeria; tell us about your younger years. The first nine years were fun, they were full, even though a lot of the times I only spent the first nine or ten years with my father, it was full of colour and warmth, both mentally and spiritually, and everything was comfortable. So you came to London aged nine, what was

The first day I got off the plane and the cold hit me upside my head, I was like oh my God! -the weather, then the cold people on the tube, man these people looked miserable. Coming from a place where everything was warm and not just weather but it was how I felt. You described living in Stamford Hill ‘a horrid experience’ Try and remember when you were nine or ten and you were probably home with your parents. Imagine what it would feel like without your parents, I was just thrust into another country, another culture. At such a young age, you are delicate and fragile, and we need that protection. Imagine what fear and trauma it must cause for a ten year old. You have worked in different realms of the media; for radio, Channel 4 and even Sony Music. Tell us about some of your experiences. I worked in Marks and Spencer for six years; I worked all through my school years. The early years of work with Channel 4 and Sony were a little dreamy. But then I was getting quite mature, getting to know life wasn’t

a bed of roses. When I left Sony, I started doing voice over work and stumbled into gospel. 7 million people watch and listen to the radio show on airlines. I think I can describe it as terribly fortunate. But I can’t claim to be qualified for what I do. The church was your saving grace, how did things change from then on? Most definitely. The change was quite amazing and rapid really, especially in the church world. Once I got on radio, instantly your thrust into some sort of limelight. There is demand for you all over the place. You get stopped at London Bridge and people say ‘can you sign this for my mother or daughter?’ It’s an interesting transition. I’m still on the journey; I’m still growing and learning. What inspired you to want to be successful in music? I think everyone has this innate desire to be better at what they do. For me what propels me is the knowledge that UK gospel is not regarded by a lot people. It’s about music that effects people’s lives positively and gives them hope. I meet people, and to go to a place where 10,000 people are singing your song. This thing is worth doing.

In 2009 you became the first-ever international act to perform on America’s popular entertainment channel, BET, for the prestigious annual Celebration Of Gospel show. What did this mean to you? Oh man it was huge for us, with what you consider to be success, when you’re in the middle of it; you seldom get to feel a sense for it. In reality since then there hasn’t been an international act. Even for the big name Americans it was like wow! It changed the game for us. How did Muyiwa and The Riversongz initially come to light? The short version. I was in church with a friend of mine one day and we said we should record gospel song. Riversongz was the first gospel act to sell out at the indigo O2, that’s crazy! Why do you think this is? Because I think there are few people that are willing to take the risk. People are there to support. The Americans have built relationships by releases, concerts and promotion. So we have taken the risk of doing concerts and putting out albums and just kept going. Prior to us at the O2 was Kirk Franklin and

Mary Mary on the same night. Thank God we were supported. You have to be willing to take the risk, be willing to be able to fall on your face. What’s next for Riversongz? We’ll finish the concert, we’ll do a tour, and we’ll do some more releases. We are working on a Christmas album. [Laughs] That’s what’s up! Where do you draw musical inspiration from? I have to say I did an interview were they asked me the ‘three songs that inspire you’. One was Labi Siffre- something inside so strong and people like Desere and Lionel Richie. Outside of gospel those are some people I draw inspiration from. What’s your main ethos in life? There are some guiding principles, in my family we live by the pillars. Firstly gratitude for everything and every moment. Generosity, find an opportunity to be a blessing to someone else, sobriety and also rule number six in my house don’t take yourself too seriously. Rule number one Honesty, just be you.

AFRICAN ALL-STARS Who is your all time favourite African musician? Will have to be Mary Makeba, it’s between her and Lady Smith Black Mombazo. Which African country would you like to visit next and why? I’d like to visit next...I think Cape Verde. I think that would have to be it. That would be the place I would like to live. Cape Verde baby! It’s like heaven.

f you ask any fan of

albums from 2004 then I am sure that you will get a fair percentage that will mention Complex Simplicity as one of the biggest albums from that year-it was the kind of RnB that brings a warm feeling inside.

Be Your Girl with that atmospheric video was a huge cut from that debut album and it is still guaranteed floor filler to this day. It was a huge accomplishment from Teedra Moses who had by and large been a relatively unknown name. The album pointed to her amazing song writing talents with all songs in some shape or form written by Teedra in that phenomenal debut album that had production from Raphael Saadiq and Lil John. She had already written tracks for people like Nivea and Christina Milian with her huge hit Dip It Low April 2004 before

her album dropped on Words: Semper Azeez Harris July 2004 so in one sense the song writing ability was not a huge surprise. While she acknowledges her immense achievement she also points to the huge role of Paul Poli who is a little known figure outside of musical circles but nevertheless a huge producer and the hugely successful Ne-yo who provided her with backing vocals, â&#x20AC;&#x153;I wrote on all the tracks on my first album but there were two very important players in Complex Simplicity being Ne-yo and Paul Poli and because of the chemistry we had from the lyrics I wrote we built upon that to make Complex Simplicity. With this new album I am taking the role of singing and writing but I am still trying to find help but it is still basically me.â&#x20AC;? So it is a full eight years later and Teedra is finally coming back with her sophomore album a strange thing to say for a lady that has been in the

business for that period of time. That is not to say that she has not had any material out since then-a few mix-tapes like Luxurious under Grind and a track with the her stable mate on Rick Ross’ Mayback, with the crazy track Another LuvR. Biased intended but it has been way too long for a follow up to that album but things happen when they are supposed to or at least that is what we are told.“It does not irritate me when people think I have been doing nothing since that first album” she answers confidently when I ask about the fact that most people think she has not been involved in music since that album, “some people are aware others are not but I have not been highly publicised because I have been independent. I started in the early years writing for others then I focused on myself and then I

have been doing tours to support myself.” In those eight years of apparent inactivity Teedra has continued to revel in some respects in her “underground status” where comparisons to greats like Mary J Blige and the late and great Teena Marie abound. It’s not been easy she confesses, “I was on a label that was popular for rock music and down stop rap music and they really did not have much experience of putting out an RnB album and neither did I in fact. I was a new artist they did not know how to market me and I was not aware of the business, I just wanted to make music.” She adds, “The label fell into financial troubles and they had to file bankruptcy and they were acquired by another music company and then I had to make sure I was not caught up with that...I did not really think of labels after that because I had to use the shows to perform and support my family and then I started to get more well-known and then that is when I started to think about labels again.” “And why did you start to think of labels again?” I ask. “I always try to come up with titles for projects that reflect where I am and so

the last mix-tape I put out Luxurious under Grind was just me saying that the underground was great shit but I want to come out of it and reach a next level and that is why I signed with Maybach-I will always be an underground artist at heart though” Initially the whole Teedra Moses and Rick Ross Maybach partnership seems a bit strange after all she is one of the queens of sultry RnB while Ross growls even when he says: “I love you”-grhhhh. “I do not think we are a direct contrast Rick Ross is building an empire so it would be silly for me not to work with someone that can help me to get to where I want to be”. In truth when you talk to Teedra Moses as well you realise that while she is a sultry singer, she can deal out a can of whip ass in a second all in a lady like fashion as the occasional “bitch” and “shit” roll off the tongue in that ever so sexy Californian, Louisiana twang. So that album Lioness will be out soon but it is still a work in process. While she admits that there are no huge names on the album her confidence in what she wants to bring is palpable and hopefully points to an absolutely banging second album in the making. “I have worked and made some great connects with some up and coming producers like Fisticuffs who worked on Miguel’s albums, the Classics from New Jersey and they did some stuff with Joe Budden, Donny Cash the Los Angeles area and Trackdemics but I would really love to work with Ryan Leslie because I like his sound his pre chords, heavy bass lines, banging drums so that would be great.”

How did you become involved in the music industry? I’ve always had a passion for music since I was young. My dad was music manager so I have always been around music. My personal musical break came after I won MTV’s Hugo Urban Rules in 2008 although prior to that I had attended Sylvia Youngs Theatre School and worked with Basement Jaxx. What is your background Meleka, where are you from? I like to think of myself as a little traveller as I have moved around quite a bit. I’m originally from West London, but spent my teenage years in Buckinghamshire. Now I reside in both, I spend a few days in the hustle and bustle of London and when I need a bit of quiet time I sneak off to the countryside.

Where do you feel your strongest skills lie, in singing or song writing? Or are you ambidextrous in both fields. I like that I got the ambidextrous option, so I’ll take that. I love doing both. I think that as an artist you have a few key peak years but as a writer other people can sing your songs. You can last forever and exists in genres and places that maybe you personally would never be heard. With Song writing what works best for you, where do you get your inspiration for song writing from? Everywhere. I don’t have a specific formula but

lyrics, words, sentences they inspire me. I might be driving and see a slogan or a word on and a sign and end up writing a song about it.

as a mix of pop and soulful vocals. I think Beat dun Drop does have a dubstep feel in the music and then I bring the soulful vocal. So it’s a mix of genres.

You have had remarkable success in a short time have you found that a big surprise? I have been surprised, absolutely. The response I receive from people who listen to my music is something you can never predict and that’s an amazing worthwhile feeling. It means a lot especially as I write my own songs so it’s nice to know that people are connecting with my words and the things I talk/sing about.

You have got some fantastic collobarions under your musical belt if you could collaborate with anyone else who would that be? Yes they can be dead or alive. I would love to work with Linda Perry. I think she is an amazingly talented woman. I am a huge fan of Pink and Christina Aguilera and I know she has worked quite closely with them both. Her song writing ability is immense.

What do you do to relax, away from the music scene? I’m really into reading and writing. It really calms me down and gives me time to live inside my imagination. I have recently started my own blog called World Of Meleka.com, and I have a feature on it called Moral Of The Story, which is a bit like my diary. It’s where I tell my readers about something that happened to me and then I give them the moral of the story. The first one is about an embarrassing doctors appointment!

So are you a Carnival Gal? (Notting Hill Carnival that is), if so can you tell our readers about one of your best Notting Hill Carnival experiences? I am absolutely a Carnival girl. I used to be in the precession as a child. I would spend my summer holidays making my costume and then party in it for the weekend. In 2009 I performed on five stages, did three radio interviews and then went on to perform at two Carnival after parties, all wearing high heels! That has to be the best Carnival so far for me. Although I am looking forward to going back and doing a similar run this year too, so who knows.

Meleka who do you look up to musically, who is your musical inspiration? I have so many. I love the glamour and craftsmanship of people like Doris Day, Julie Andrews and Fred Astaire. I also love the glitz and the energy of people Tina Turner and Diana Ross and then the lyrical content of The Police, Bob Marley, Stevie Wonder… Itt’s so hard to pick one. What book did you last read? A book called One Fifth Avenue by Candace Bushnell. The book’s about an Actress, a journalist and a socialite who all live in Manhattan. It’s full of gossip and glamour. What more can a girl ask for? Will you be performing at any of the Olympics music events in London this summer? I haven’t been booked to play any Olympic events over summer but I’m really

What works between you both? Sometimes we are like innocent small kids, screaming and shouting while playing cricket match and making fun over each other’s run rate. Then we’re romancing one another on screen, which is easy because we’re both so comfortable with each other, there’s no nervous tension. Both of us are probably just thinking how long it is until lunch ;o) Then we are busting our moves on the dance floor and ripping one another apart for dancing like a mad person ;o) We have lots of fun together, that’s what makes the two of us work better. We don’t like

getting bored so we’ll do anything to pass our time, from chasing goats in the street to competitive volley ball matches, you name it we’ll be up to it ! What did it feel doing an out-and-out action film after several comedies? What did I feel! I felt a lot of pain, a lot of satisfaction, but I felt right at home… This kind of film is exactly what I’ve been waiting for, action with not just a slice of comedy but a bucket load of rowdyness!! It’s my perfect movie cocktail, all my favourite aspects of cinema rolled into one. So to answer your question I would say: “I feel great” and these are words I don’t tend to use so easily about anything. Whether people love the screenplay and action and all the wonderful characters as much as I do is neither here nor there, the fact is, even if only one person goes to see this film, I would still treasure everything about

it as dearly as I do today ;o). Tell us about the action in the film – Any life threatening stunts performed? Depends on who you are asking!! ;o). To me nothing is life threatening as long as you have checked your safety ;o) But on a serious note, sadly even the simplest of stunts can go horribly wrong on many sets. Thankfully because this is such a raw film there was no need for any fancy hi-tech once in a life time ‘on your knees praying to survive’ stunt required. This film comes right from the streets I was brought up in, no guns, no cry for help, it’s about man on men, fist on flesh, human punch bags basically. There’s one massive jump I do off scaffolding with a deadly crank, but that was too much fun for me to remember to fear for my life though. Plus these South Indian stuntmen are a credit to their industry,

SCREEN they had my back the whole time, and that gives you confidence even when you might be lacking your own ;o) Tell us about your role in the film I am Rowdy Rathore!! So “Don’t Angry Me!!” What was the most challenging part of shooting Rowdy Rathore? Doing action in India’s insane heat, having big strong men come at you with their fists and their stomachs all day every day, having to get up every morning knowing I was going to have to fight another 20 men was not easy even when I was 24 let alone at 44. But what an experience, even if only my son comes to me and says “Dad you kicked ass” I’ll be the happiest man in the world. This was not an easy shoot by far, and I’m not afraid to admit that, as long as I can walk I can do anything, but I swear there were days I thought I couldn’t walk let alone fight. But what I was really afraid of more than anything in this film was Prabhu Sir’s famous dance steps, I walked on set with two left feet, and

walked off set with what felt like three. The man moves at the speed of light and I’m yet to find bones in his body, he truly is India’s magic moving man… Rowdy Rathore is receiving such positive feedback, from your look, to your moustache, to your dance moves, were you as confident before the shoot? I’m a confident man

because I believe in people, Shabina Khan co-producer and stylist of the film has been a designer for like 20 years, probably more, I knew she’d give me a look India’s general public would connect to. For sure people in offices won’t be copying my look but their cooks mostly probably will ;o). As for the moustache, everyone in India loves a good moustache!! And for the dance moves they were as hard as I had

expected them to be, but surprisingly I had way more fun in the songs than I thought I would, purely because it’s so nerve racking learning South Indian steps in front of a South Indian dancing legend ;o). We’ve already talked about one music documentary, the exceptional ‘Searching for Sugar Man’ which is reviewed in this issue, but there is also a more poptastic alternative. ‘Katy Perry: Part of me 3D’ hopes to follow the other 3D concert movies of recent years, but timing might be against it. ‘Ice Age 4: Continental Drift’ is the one the kids will be keen to see. Steve Carell is ‘Seeking a friend for the end of the world’ and it just so happens that Keira Knightley is looking for the same. The apocalyptic indie road movie looks like a sleeper hit in the making. Two smaller releases we can heartily recommend are ‘I Am Bruce Lee’ and ‘El Bulli: Cooking In Progress’. The Bruce Lee documentary has

Just as eye-opening, is the sumptuous El Bulli film which takes a behind-thescenes look at what was previously known as the best dining experience in the world. The now defunct restaurant would close its doors for six months of every year to prepare dozens of unique dishes and this film follows that process every step of the way. SCREEN Searching For Sugar Man This remarkable documentary is a genuine surprise in every sense. The subject matter, a little known musician by the name of Rodriguez, is a stellar talent around whom a mythical status has developed. Unheralded in his native North America, the singer/ songwriter became an influential figure in the struggle against apartheid in South Africa when his albums were circulated in the country. Unfortunately

Rodriguez never knew about his international acclaim and disappeared into obscurity when his record deal was terminated. The story picks up when an intrepid journalist teams up with a record store owner to find out what happened to the man whose most famous song is the instantly catchy ‘Sugar Man’. The story takes some amazing twists along the way, but remains utterly engrossing throughout. More importantly, the

music and the lyrics are so powerful, so well-written that you will wonder how you managed to go this long without listening to any of his songs beforehand. Outstanding stuff, and with the soundtrack of the summer to boot. Just be sure to NOT research the subject matter yourself beforehand. This one deserves to be watched as innocently as possible. LIME’S JULY FILM reVIEWS Dr Suess’ The Lorax There are a few films coming out over the next few weeks to cater for the younger audience during the summer holidays. Pixar will unleash their latest effort in August (we’ve seen it, and trust us its spectacular) and there will also be another instalment in the ever-popular ‘Ice Age’ franchise. The other release is this adaptation of a beloved story from the prolific pen of Dr Suess. The Lorax is one of his best known creations, and the bright orange spirit of nature is voiced here by Danny DeVito. It’s actually genius casting, you truly get the sense of a large character bursting out of a 36 LIME MAGAZINE 2012

diminutive frame. The rest of the voices, however, are problematic. The leads are the nondescript Zac Efron and Taylor Swift, who lack chemistry and any sense of enjoyment in proceedings. The animation feels surprisingly flat for the 3D film, and the story is overly stretched to breaking point. There are a couple of cuddly cuties thrown in

to the film; which, to be fair, are pretty adorable. But then these are only supporting characters at best, and there is a sense that anything good here might just be to flog a few toys and get a few merchandising deals in place. Lime Rating: Release date: 27 July

Magic Mike Channing Tatum is not ashamed of his ‘exotic dancing’ background. To be honest, if we looked like him, we probably wouldn’t be either. What is surprising is that this early career now provides the basis of this hugely entertaining film. Steven Soderbergh has tackled a variety of subject over the last few years, and this particular one proves to be the one that has generated arguably his best film to date. It’s fun, serious and boasts some superb performances from all the cast. Tatum looks like a natural on the stage and on screen; he has developed into one of the best young actors in Hollywood. Alongside him this time is the magnetic Matthew McConaughey, who draws in the audience as he does impressionable young men looking for a fast buck. The story veers towards standard ‘sports movie’ clichés towards the end, but by this point you should be so invested in the characters that you’ll be desperate for the big reveal at the end. Lime gets talking to Junior James aka Sherlock about his book, based on his life story

prisoner are the four words that describe Sherlock’s life, having put pen to paper his life story now lies in print. Within this trilogy of detailed accounts of Sherlock’s years, he talks about how he spiralled out of control from a young age. Sherlock didn’t get education and put his desires into hopes of becoming a DJ as a teenager and making a name for himself at dances back in the day. “Growing up as a teenager, my education- my reading and writing was poor. In my 4th year of primary school I started bunking. But then I got into DJ’ing, I found something I was good at. I made a name for myself as a DJ, and turned into a little ghetto star. That was the high point of my life, got girls, no money, but I was just having fun.” As time went on Sherlock realised that the attention from DJ’ing was no longer and soon he got mixed up with the wrong crowd.

When he had no job prospects ahead of him, he took a turn for the worst. “Few years after, it died down, mans where doing street robbing. It was peer pressure, I had no education, no job or anything so I started following. I always knew what I was doing was wrong. Then my first time I smoked crack, we robbed some guys and with the money we got everyone decided to buy some crack. I said I was never going to smoke it again, 38 LIME MAGAZINE 2012

but more fool me that was the beginning of more to come.” Knowing that it was the wrong route to go down, getting himself work held the key to change.

“I stopped all that and went and got a job from the careers office. My first job was in Harrods, which lasted for about 2 months and after that I got laid off in the recession. I had my girl at the time, so I spent time with her and then we broke up. I tried to get back into the DJ’ing, but by the time, there was lack of funding to get the tunes where I wanted to get them.” After feeling like he had no hope and from his

previous experience with drugs, Sherlock turned to harder crime and got mixed up in the game of dealing and selling, and later found he’d become an international drug smuggler taking 29 different planes in a year, to places like Colombia, Brazil, Jamaica, Spain, Amsterdam, and Belgium. “When I reached 20, I came from Jamaica, and met this guy who I started selling drugs with. I had grown up with him, and then he bought this Yardie guy, so in the end we started selling weed and selling crack. I’d snort the crumbs, they no effect on me and I couldn’t see how this drug could

turn anyone into junkies. So I was making money smoking the crumbs, but as time went on I started smoking the profit... I had £500 profit for myself and I started smoking profit, not realising that I’m hooked now. My addiction

When Sherlock realised that he was in a substantial amount of debt, he couldn’t face the pressure anymore and tried to take his own life. “I took Rat poison and tried to take my own life. I woke up in the morning with bad stomach pains, my sister came round and saw me in all this pain, she called my girl at the time and she took me in the hospital and I got pumped out.” Wanting to change his ways, having come clean to the members of his family; he sought rehabilitation staying with his aunty to keep a low profile, away from the people who were on his case for his debt. “I end up going to an Aunty- demanding ‘what’s going on?’ So I told her everything, she was shocked and disappointed; she let me stay at her house, but said she would notify my parents. My mum took it really bad, it was new to her- she didn’t have a clue. Now Sherlock’s main focuses lie in writing his trilogy of books, which he began to write during his prison sentence- having been caught for drug smuggling. In the first instalment he goes through

the ins and outs of his younger years on road and stresses the importance of creating a better, more positive lifestyle. “Anyone that’s read part one are begging me for part two.” “Doors have just been opening. I have invested in two thousand copies of books; and have sold them on the streets, all over London. To get a publisher is the hard part, when you put out a book, they may not like your book. It’s not that it’s rubbish; it’s just that it’s not there sort of thing. It breaks your spirit. I want to get my book out there and build a CV for myself. It will start to open the right doors. I’m now four and a half years clean off drugs. I’ve been out of prison a year and three months, I’ve done nothing illegal since. I don’t live that lifestyle; I don’t have to be hiding from police. I don’t want to smoke no more” He expresses today’s generation getting in with the wrong crowd and the advice he would give to young people in today’s society who face that dilemma. It’s easy to get into the wrong crowd. If you’re doing something sensible with your life, you won’t fall into the wrong crowd. And if you’re not doing anything with yourself; that’s when you’ll fall into the wrong crowd. They all have this postcode stuff now; we used to be able move away from the area. Make sure you get your education, you’re gonna automatically go down that negative road that I did if you don’t. You’re gonna see the crowds that are going on the move, you’ll make £2000 and you think it’s easy and fall into the trap. In this interview Lime talks to quintessential dance producer, DJ Pierre about his years on the Chicago scene, reigning as the unconventional king of the hard-core house mixers; along with the plans he has for the year ahead. You describe music as the ‘centre of my world’ has it always been something you wanted to do from a young age? I was named Nathaniel after my uncle Nat who played with the Duke Ellington band. My entire family are music lovers and all my siblings grew up playing some sort of instrument. I was in my h/s drum band and I played the clarinet so music has always been a very natural part of who I am. Tell us about your years producing on the 80’s Chicago scene.

You’re responsible for producing more than 50 house anthems, which are some of your favourites- your top three? Only 50? It’s tough to pick a track, but I would say I get the biggest response from people with the Horn Song, Masterblaster and one of Chicago’s favorite Phantasy Girl.

I started out as a DJ. I was scratching Pierre then. My friend Spanky, the other member of Phuture, was convinced we can make our own tracks after he got a drum machine. Once I got on board the rest is history. I saw that I heard music different and the producer inside woke up. Chicago at the time was very competitive and talented. So if you were a DJ or a Producer you had to bring it. So I fed off that energy. EDM as we know it today is a direct result of Chicago in the 80’s so i’m honoured to have been a part of that. Talk to us about your experience with Jive records I moved from Chicago because the same

competitive energy that I fed off earlier on in my career became too stifling. The corruption and thievery with labels like TRAX was unbelievable. So I looked for other opportunities and Jive signed me as an artist and a Producer. This led to my move to NY. It was my first introduction to how a label operated. It was a necessary experience for my journey. I met people like Will Smith, KRS1, D Smooth, and even Donnie Osmond. I was actually black balled from Jive because I refused to give a track to Samantha Fox whose career was bubbling at the time. But I promised the track to another group and at the time I felt I had to stick to my word...but I had no

You are donned as the founding father of acid house, but who else in your opinion has pioneered in acid house? Phuture, (myself, Spanky and Herb) were the first to use the 303 to create what you hear now as Acid. Everyone wanted to know how we did it...and eventually people figured it out. First I had mixed feelings...youth does not allow you the wisdom needed to see how big this thing could get at the time. But as the years passed I felt nothing but pride and respect for those doing it right. So Armando, Tyree Cooper, A Guy Called Gerald, Lil Louis, Josh Wink, & Hardfloor did it right. The Pioneers of House Music? Afro Acid is a concept I developed to create a place where I could be myself as I evolve and grow. People wanted DJ Pierre to remain DJ Pierre and that’s not realistic of a true artist. So I formed a label, Afro Acid, a place there are no boundaries in creativity. The Afro is anything from deep soulful House and the Acid is anything from Techno to Acid. So combining with Pioneers of House we are able to bring the current sounds of EDM to the table while highlighting some of the pillars of this industry. So it will the first time you have myself, Steve Hurley and Marshall Jefferson together on the same stage...ever. I think the house heads will love it and the newer kids will go nuts. I play to that audience now and they are crazier than ever. Bart B More is a young new talent out of Amsterdam. He is an amazing DJ and producer. Tom Stephan (Superchumbo) has been in the game and he combines both worlds...old and new. So will be an amazing night. Something for everyone. You show no signs of slowing down, what does the rest of the year hold for you? I don’t know anything else. As long as I can still create...I will. Looking 10 years younger than I am helps as well. That’s a blessing actually. Tell us about some of the new tracks that you have lined up. 2011 and 2012 have been amazing production wise. I worked with Simian Mobil Disco, Detroit Grand Pubahs, The Human League and more. I was able to stretch myself on the projects I did with them and created a sound that was not the typical DJ Pierre. This set me up for my releases on Boys Noize Records and also on Steve Aoki’s Dimmak Records.

These labels are cutting edge and I feel ready for that next phase they call EDM. What tips would you give to a wannabe DJ? I would say to a new DJ to just be yourself always. Know how to tell the

story...to your audience, everytime. Even when you are sick or don’t feel like it. I’ve DJ’d with food poisoning, and even someone else’s records when the airline lost mine. And I still told the story and took them on a journey. Listen to your audience
