to Adoption

Iabout adoption then

f you’ve ever thought

now is a good time to think some more. With this years’ national adoption week running from 5 – 11 November adoption is very much at the forefront. Every year the British Agency for Adoption and Fostering (BAAF) highlight the need for more adopters during adoption week. This year’s slogan is ‘Rule Yourself In’. As you have probably heard in the media, black and mixed race children wait longer than their white peers to be adopted. Getting children adopted as soon as possible is very important so they can just get on with their lives with their new families. The more people that come forward the less time the children will have to wait. Many people rule themselves out, believing they can’t adopt because maybe they are too old or too young or aren’t married, but adopters like all parents are all sorts of people. The most important things are that you have the patience, energy and determination to transform a child’s

life. Adopting a child is a wonderful thing to do. As Nelson Mandela said “There can be no keener revelation of a society’s soul than in which it treats its children.” As an adopter you may be a first time parent or you may like to add to your existing family. Perhaps your children have grown up and your house is feeling a bit empty, it’s not true you can’t adopt if you are over 40, in fact we’d welcome your parenting

experience. Of course adopting is a big decision and not one to be taken lightly, its life changing! The process to adopt will help you to feel ready and prepared to make the commitment. Once you have adopted you will have full parental responsibility for that child and the decisions will all be yours. However we know it won’t always be easy and we will be there to support you all the way. We can offer advice, information and counselling. Raising children is expensive especially in these tough times and adopters are able to get the same benefits as any parent. Depending on the circumstances sometimes, means-tested financial assistance is given to families caring for a child with particular needs, or to help make it possible for

you all from varying backgrounds? We have quite a small team in Mosaic and what works well is that we are all from different backgrounds. Each member of the team seems to bring a different skill and we are very close knit.

The organisation was formerly known as Adoption Black Families - why the name change and what’s different? We have changed our name to reflect the diverse ethnic groups that we work with. We worked with our adoptive families to come up with the name change. What’s important is that we are constantly updating. Have any new initiatives been introduced to encourage black and dual heritage families to adopt? We asked the University of Central Lancashire to conduct an evaluation of how effective the service is at developing and supporting families from BME backgrounds. We actively target BME communities and receive a high number of enquiries about adoption. We ensure our recruitment process re ethnically and culturally sensitive. This makes a significant difference in stimulating interest. We are always looking to innovate and recently conducted a survey with our adopters to explore new recruitment methods and ideas. In addition we are looking at targeting LGBT adopters and working with New 10 LIME MAGAZINE 2012

It is tremendously rewarding to work with a family through the entire adoption process

Ahead of National Adoption Week this month, Mosaic Adoption and Permanence Service Team Manager; Christine Allen shares information about adoption services, campaigns and resources. reasons children need adopting. These can vary from neglect to death of their own parents.

Family Social and are a key sponsor of LGBT adoption week. The service has high BME adoption rates, recruiting more than four times the number of four times the of BME adopters of another similar service. Who would consider adoption? We believe children need families who can grow up feeling good about themselves, with the knowledge of their own culture, language and religion. Our main criteria is that children are placed with stable, loving families who meet their individual needs. These carers can come fro ma variety of backgrounds and can be single, married, in a civil partnership or living with a partner. We welcome gay and lesbian adopters whether single or looking to adopt jointly. Why do children need adopting? There are a variety of

How old are the children being placed for adoption with Mosaic? The children can be babies or aged up to seven or eight years. Many sibling groups also need adoptive homes. What can prospective adopters expect from your service? At Mosaic, adopters can expect extensive support as long as they need it. This includes having a dedicated social worker,

excellent on going training and support from the whole team as well as other adopters. At Mosaic we have an experienced and responsive team and we provide support groups and social events. You will get a thorough assessment, preparation and carefully matching to suit the needs of the family. The team at Mosaic are both passionate

and dedicated and reflect the ethnic diversity of the families we work with.

and over a five year period we have only had one adoption breakdown.

Prospective adopters are often put off by the adoption process. What is your approach to this? All of our prospective adopters have a dedicated social worker who will take them through the process. The process is thorough to ensure that the child and adopter are carefully matched. Because of this, placements are more likely to be a success. The assessment process can take up to six months and we are well within national guidelines. We recognise for anyone that is considering adoption that it is a lifelong commitment to that child. We explain the intrusiveness of the process and the reason why it may seem long. We also recognise they need time to recover as the legislations are demanding. We focus on the parent(s) we are accessing and we are child centred. We have great success with families

How supportive are you as a team not only to prospective adopters but to each other? How important is this support? The support we provide is excellent and adopters are supported throughout the process and also once they are caring for their new family. We will visit adopters regularly, advocate for them, make sure they are receiving all of the services they should be receiving (from other organisations as well as ourselves) provide financial support, training, keep them in touch with other adopters and invite them to regular social events. Our close knit team regularly meet to discuss individual cases and develop our services further to meet the needs of the adopters. As well as day to day support from each other, Action

for Children provides extensive support to all employees through regular team events and impartial counselling services if needed. Has the number of people adopting become greater in recent years? I think what we do always notice is that when there is emphasis on adoption sometimes it’s because of local authorities saying there are too many children in the care system. Then we would get an increase. What should people look for in adoption agencies? I think most importantly is sensitivity. What you do want to look for in an agency is one that has time for you and makes time for you. We are honest and I am very lucky for the social workers in my team. How does it feel to be part of the adoption process from start to finish where you

What is your success rate? It’s difficult to say. We recognise people adopt for different reasons. I think we are always clear about motivation and the role of adoption.

have worked with the family and successfully placed a child? It is tremendously rewarding to work with a family through the entire adoption process and see how adoption can transform the child’s life and that of the entire family.

What measures will you take to raise awareness during National Adoption Week this month? We are part of the South London consortium. On the 6th November we will be at Lambeth Town Hall. We will also be holding a session on 17th from 12pm till 2pm.

COMMUNITY What can people do as a community to raise awareness about adoption? I think there needs to be openness about it. I think it’s about raising awareness in different communities. I think it’s a shame that it’s just a week focusing on raising awareness for adoption. This month Lime gets talking to CEO of Dare to Dream Usha Penumuchi

and coach, working with people via the media of tailor-made training programmes and workshops to build their confidence and self-esteem. Known as an internationally renowned speaker and training and development consultant has proved crucial and invaluable to her organisation; Dare to Dream which was set up with the desire to succeed and achieve greatness. In this interview Usha talks of her achievements, charitable spirit and going forward with her vision. Tell us about Dare to Dream, what are its aims and objectives? Dare to Dream was conceived in 2008 when I was part of the women’s issue network for the Ministry of Justice Home office. I attended a winning women’s conference and at that event there was a jet banner with the sub title Dare to Dream, it was a light bulb moment and I knew that that would be my company’s name. I guess at that time Dare to Dream was ‘born.’ In October 2009 I started my company Dare to Dream as it was clear that I was an “inspirational speaker” not motivational, as one can influence another to do something – motivation is from within oneself. How did your idea go from idea - to a company? 12 LIME MAGAZINE 2012

foundation, helping victims of domestic abuse, and will take the message of zero tolerance into schools.

I have a charity and I used to do a lot of speaking for it which developed my public speaking. I enjoyed watching lives being changed by a word, and the word with authenticity and passion bears weight. I had an arranged marriage that did not work and my confidence was dwindled to nothing. I began my journey of building my confidence one step at a time as a single mum, and now I not only speak with power and confidence but I teach others how to move out of their comfort zone and be the BEST they can be. When was the last time you did something to help out in the community? I am also the founder of a charity wowministries, we currently help orphanages in the Philippines and I want to extend that to the women and widows in India, Kenya and around d the world. The ministry helps single mums and anyone who has a need our strap line is “Meeting Needs Changing lives” and many lives have been changed. I am also now going to be part of the Sara Charlton Charitable

So tell us who is Usha? You coach, aid people in the media by building their self-confidence and corporate challenges. What’s made you so strong? I think realising who I am, in the context of knowing my strengths and weaknesses. I am a woman of faith and a strong spiritual being. I tell people including my daughter that confidence is from within, yes externally when we wear a dazzling dress that adds to confidence, but when you have a bad hair day, or when things just feel bad it is all about the inner strength of knowing who you are.

want to do what I do, to know who THEY ARE, to value themselves, and have integrity when they speak. It is also important to have new material, to be different in delivery, have values and most importantly to ensure that their character matches their skills.

I am not advocating that confidence is built in a day, not for me or anyone but the journey of re-building who you are with the right mentors and people around you does help and make a difference. You started Dare to Dream in October 2009, so this month is your company’s official 2nd birthday. How has the company grown since formally launching in June this year? Yes it was soft launched in 2009 and in 2012 it was formally launched, and had a good turnout. People had heard of Dare

to Dream and who I was I think for the nature of my work, people need to hear me to then promote what I do. Word of Mouth is the most powerful marketing tool; it’s definitely worked for me [smiles].

What would you tell someone who wants to be a motivational speaker or a mentor in their desired field? Where do they start? Where should they go? When I first started reaching out to networks

and businesses and telling them about Dare to Dream, there was a lot of responses – people were saying things like “there are hundreds of motivational speakers what makes you different”? etc. So I would advise people who

What have been the highs and lows of starting your own independent company? The highs are many in as much as meeting some amazing people through networking, and I now have become somewhat a queen in networking, as well as my talks that have changed lives. The Lows are having financial security; I would have made sure I got investors, sponsors and partners on board from the onset. Money is needed to start a business but being a single mum and getting my ‘House in order’ is a priority. I have had to look for external funding for my events in the form of sponsors etc to help to get the business to take off.

COMMUNITY

What can we look forward to from you and your company in the future? Wow, it really is such exciting times. I want to be able to do more talks, work with associations and speak with integrity and passion to as many people as I can. I want to start a training academy not only in this country but overseas and make Dare to Dream a reality for people. I also want to raise awareness of the charity which I run and be a voice of the voiceless. William Shakespeare mentioned being in Southwark and his brother is buried in the area. Smallshaw conjures up this stretch of the Bankside as London’s pleasure quarter during Shakespeare’s period, a Concoction of bear-pits, theatre for the masses, and brothels - the ‘stews’, licensed by the Bishop under Ordinances dating from 1161. Smallshaw talked extensively of the social injustices imposed by the neighbouring church where female prisoners (usually prostitutes) in The Clink died at a mere 15 – riddled with STI’s and abuse – drawing parallels with present affairs where powerful institutions pimp the poor and marginalised. An iron gate adorned with dead flowers, ribbon, messages, and other curious totems revives the stigma around the Outcast Dead; these were prostitutes of the medieval times and in the Victorian era paupers. Incredibly, the prostitutes during the medieval period were licensed by the church – paying taxes and denied a Christian burial because of their sinful life. Today, there is a petition to turn it into a Garden of Remembrance owing to its cultural and historic importance. NThe International

ow in its third year,

Asian Fashion Awards (IAFA) are leading the way for the British South Asian fashion industry and putting Britain on the international map for the multi million pound industry. The only European awards of its kind, they have received continued support and championing from the pioneers of the South Asian couture fashion world internationally. The awards arose from the passion and flair for business of Neeru Bhandari and Del Ghosal. Together, they created the IAFA ceremony to ‘honour success in style’, reflecting the unique elegance in Asian fashion. This month Lime spoke with model and co-founder Neeru about celebrating the pioneering work and success of individuals working within the Asian fashion industry. When did you decide that you wanted to go into modelling? It wasn’t a career that I had actively chosen to take. I was scouted on facebook! I was approached by a very respected modelling agency and I met with them, the rest is history. I have been modelling for the past 6 years and I love every aspect of it. It allows me to be a chameleon and experiment with my look with every shoot I do. I have worked and shot for both mainstream brands and designers including Harrods and also shot and

walked for the biggest names in South Asian fashion too.

What has been you biggest challenge working in the industry? Learning new skills is always a challenge and I like that. It keeps your mind exploring and active. Another challenge that I have personally taken upon myself is to educate and show Asian boys and girls that modelling is and can be a successful and profitable career. There are so many stigmas attached to the modelling game within the Asian community and I want to change that. I think that we can. Modelling is not a seedy career, it is well respected and great fun too! Who do you admire in the fashion world? I admire so many people from every element of the fashion world. It takes a lot of skills and a lot of different people to make the fashion world move. I have respect for models, choreographers, photographers, stylists, seamstresses, hair and make-up artists, production teams just as much as the designers themselves. I admire the new talent that are very hungry for success and are breaking through glass ceilings and also being fierce about getting their work out there.

There are so many stigmas attached to the modelling game within the Asian community and I want to change that

What inspired you to make the transition from modelling to becoming a businesswoman? My business partner Del Ghosal who also a founder of the International Asian Fashion Awards was a big inspiration. I had an idea of what I wanted to achieve and it’s with his help and guidance that the concept of the IAFA’s was born. We could both see that there was a gap in the market for a movement and an event that could push forward, highlight and celebrate South Asian fashion in the UK. We found that we are the only event across Europe to be able to deliver this show. It seemed a natural progression from modelling to then enter the other side – the business aspect of the fashion arena. Tell us a bit about the events that will be taking place at the International Asian Fashion Awards. The event itself is now in its third year and has gone from strength to strength in a short space of time. We could not have wished

for any more fervent supporters of the cause. We have and continue to have the support of the top names in the business that carry the industry forward and now are also getting a lot of support from new comers in to the industry. The winning of an IAFA is coveted and we intend to keep pushing ourselves to ensure that is remains that way too. The main element of the awards on the 10th November is that there are categories that will be judged live on the night. This means that the three nominees in some of the categories will work with our team to present a live catwalk presentation of their collections on the night and the judges will select a winner live on the night. It’s very exciting and keeps the edge on the evening.

Has the IAF Awards been receiving a positive response so far? Absolutely. The feedback and response has always been positive and we are working closely with the industry to make sure that every element of the event is presented to the best of our ability.

What do you hope to achieve from your efforts? We want to both work to continue championing and celebrating success in the South Asian fashion world. The IAFA alumni is a new initiative that has been set up by us to give back to the new generation that are keen to get involved in the fashion industry. The alumni is made up of past winners and key supporter of the IAFA that provide an insight, will hold workshops and give real industry knowledge to the next generation. We wanted to give something back in the way of solidifying that the IAFA’s are more than just the ceremony once a year – we are interested in nurturing talent and innovation. What has been the highlight of your career so far? So many. But launching the IAFA awards with Del has been the highlight. What have you got lined up for next year? We haven’t had a chance to get there yet we are completely focussed on delivering an excellent show this year. As always we will be looking to push the boundaries of the show,

getting the word out and working with more and more designers and makeup artists.

COMMUNITY

What would you like to do to give back to the community? We both want to show the community that firstly, you can make your dreams come true. The idea of the IAFA’s was a dream for me and we have worked to make it a reality. Secondly I want to show young aspiring models that the fashion industry is a good career path if you are willing to work hard to make it. I want to show the parents and families of young Asian models that the decision to model is a positive action and that it is an internationally recognised career path that can make dreams come true. Ruud van Empel Ivan Empel’s work came across Ruud

on Facebook because someone posted one of his stunning images from the “World” series. I was dumb struck and fell in love with his work. Born in 1958 in Breda, the Netherlands, Rudolph Franciscus Maria van Empel studied graphic design at the Academie St. Joost, Breda between 1976 and 1981. After some time working in the fields of graphic design, film, television and interior design, van Empel purchased his first Apple Mac and began to learn about the wonders of photo manipulation using photoshop. This was a turning point and van Empel went on to pursue a successful career as a fine art photographer. Utilizing a complex technique of photo montage, van Empel produces stunningly beautiful, yet strange and captivating photography. His work has been exhibited globally and exists in many public and private collections, including the art collection of superstar Elton John. Ruud van Empel was kind enough to take time out of his hectic schedule to discuss his career and his views on success in the field of fine art.

What was the process of transitioning from graphic design, film and television to fine art. In 1994, I bought my first Apple Macintosh, a power mac. I started out with a series called “The Office.” 20 LIME MAGAZINE 2012

known world wide and the work was selling very fast. Prices were getting higher. Elton John saw my work and bought it. All those things happened at once.

Those were ideas that I had previously for set designs and the Apple Macintosh allowed me to make them in Photoshop. After working for about three years in photoshop, I presented it to a gallery in Amsterdam and they liked it. I got an exhibition there, and I got one in Germany and in France... Suddenly, I had a big success with that work. That is how it started.

That was your very first series, the Office? Yes Did you teach yourself how to manipulate images in this way? Yes, just by doing it. Somebody taught me how to work with it- all of the basic things you can do with the programme. Then after that you just have to start working. You discover all of the possibilities when you are working. That was very inspiring for me. Your first official solo show was the one in 1999 at the Groninger Museum, under the title “Waterpas of Optisch recht?” (Level or Optically straight?). Did you sell any work? The museum bought two works at that time. I just had a big show with them last year. In 1999, they decided they wanted to do a big show with me in the future and that happened last year. Your international breakthrough came in 2005 with the series entitled “World Moon Venus,” at the “Picturing Eden” exhibition. What was that exhibition about? That show was curated by Deborah Klochko, a curator from New York. She saw my work on the internet and here in 2004. She sent me an email asking if I

wanted to participate in her exhibition about Eden.. The image of Eden and how that is depicted in works today. This was in 2005, in the middle of George W Bush times. America was not very popular. It was a country that was kicked out of the Garden of Eden, just like the bible story where Adam and Eve were kicked out of the garden of Eden for doing wrong... That was her feeling. She thought my work would fit well with the show and she put it on the cover of the catalogue. Immediately, I got a lot of attention. At the same time, my gallery was showing some of my work in Miami and we sold about 35 pieces of work in four days. Wow! Picturing Eden was in January 2006. I also had my first solo show in a gallery in New York in January 2006, so that all came together at that point. I was working on the “World” series. World, Moon, Venus.. I got internationally famous at that point. Would you agree that 2005 was your breakthrough? Yes, I would agree that that is when my name got

How did you depict Eden? There were a couple of the “World” images, like World Number 1. The image was of a black girl in a white dress. This was very popular and it worked very well for the black community in the USA, because they were not used to having a black person depicted in such a positive way in fine art. How do you personally define success in the art world at this point in your career. If I am able to have exhibitions in museums and public places where people can go and see it, that to me is success. They give you exhibitions because they like and are interested in your work. That is the best part of success I think. For the other part, in terms of the commercial side, if your work is selling well enough, you can live from that. I have that situation so I am very happy with that. I would take it that from your definition, you would consider yourself successful? Yes. I am not working for success. I am just working for my work. My work develops and I like to make work. That is why I do it. People like Damien Hirst have been working with all kinds of publicity stunts, I don’t know exactly how that works, but anyway, he got really big using a strategy. That is another way of achieving success. If you get a lot of attention put on you then automatically things will happen and people will be

drawn to your work. That is not the kind of success that I am after. I just want to be able to work as an artist for as long as possible... I hope that I will be able to show it in galleries and museums. What would you say were some of the biggest challenges that you have had to face as an artist? Getting a good gallery was very difficult, especially here in the Netherlands. It is a small country so, there are not many possibilities. I wanted to be treated honestly by the galleries. I was very firm in my agreements with them. The moment they did not stick to their agreement, I was out of there. That was the hardest thing for me- to get honest, good and fair treatment from galleries. There is a lot of cheating going on in the art world.

have for aspiring artists wishing to follow in your footsteps? To work hard and to know know your goals. One has to know what one wants. Don’t let yourself be distracted and follow your heart. Following your heart is what will make you feel good in the end. Like I said before, everyone advised me not to go into art. In the beginning, everyone said that my first work was not art. They said it was ridiculous. I got very negative reviews. Everyone hated it! But I just kept going because that is what I wanted. You must have belief that you can do it. Info: Ruud van Empel is represented by Flatland Gallery Amsterdam and Stux Gallery New York.

How did you deal with that? Well the moment they did not stick to their agreements, I dumped them! Some of them will try anything to cheat you unfortunately. I am not saying that every gallery would do that, but I had some really bad experiences and I got out of that. What advice would you LIME MAGAZINE 2012

Ruud van EmpelBeyond Innocence Lime rating: Words: Adelaide Damoah

Born in 1958, Ruud van Empel is a world renowned Dutch fine art photographer who uses a complicated technique of photography and montage to produce some of the most beautiful photography I have ever seen. The documentary, “Beyond Innocence,” took three years to make and was directed by Erik van Empel, his brother. It is an enthralling and at times very personal insight into the life and work of the artist. I interviewed him for my Art Success series earlier this year. When I asked him how the film came about. He told me:

REVIEW

“My brother, who is a professional documentary film maker and camera man, spoke to me and I said maybe we could film a documentary... Maybe we could film a video at the exhibition. But my brother was kind of ambitious and he talked to the television network here in the Netherlands and they decided that they wanted to co produce this documentary. There is a channel in the Netherlands where they make art documentaries. They said it could be one of those films. That is how it started.” The film starts off with Elton John playing at a concert in the Netherlands. Before he starts the song, he gives a brief speech in which he dedicates the 22 LIME MAGAZINE 2012

song to van Empel himselfin front of a live audience. It is a touching tribute from a famous collector of van Empels work. Elton John himself is interviewed for the film and the full 25 minute interview can be seen in the extras section of the DVD. A known collector of fine art, it is fascinating to learn about why Sir Elton John collects the work of van Empel and other artists in this rare interview with him...

As the film goes on, you get a sense of a man who is passionate about his work to the point of obsession. There are various, uncommon opportunities to see how van Empel puts his work together, from photographing the subjects, to painstakingly taking them apart and rearranging them in photoshop to get the perfect image. This is evident when he explains that he discards a lot of work simply because it does not match up to his expectations of perfection and beauty. Beauty is something which is of importance to him as he explained during the interview I did with him. He said, “I am 52 years old now and lots of things that I used to find interesting 20 years ago, I don’t find interesting any more. But beauty is something that always stays.. I chose

children because innocence is also a kind of beauty as a subject...” The documentary is a rare opportunity to see the artist go through some of his artistic process, obsessing about the arrangement facial features and the general composition of various pieces of work. When I interviewed him, he gave some insight into why he does this. He said, “You find that you have to find a way to make things look beautiful, because if you start to montage photos in an experimental way, you find that the sizes of things do not fit relative to each other. If you start to do that, things start to become very ugly. In a photo, things have a two dimensional feeling... This applies to the faces, because the faces are montaged completely. The eyes, the eyebrows, the mouth, even the pupils... All of those things are montaged, so the montage is very detailed and I have to be very careful that things are right, that they look as if they could be real. I am therefore very focused on making it beautiful, or not ugly. Because it becomes ugly when it is not correct. If the mouth is just a little bit too big, you see it and feel it immediately and it becomes ugly.” There is also a rare interview with one of the people who was responsible for launching him on the world stage, curator and director of MOPA, (Museum of Photographic Arts) in San Diego, Deborah Klochko. Klochko talks about why she fell in love with van Empels work and gives her own insight into the artists work which is interesting to listen to.

The film is very well put together with clips from old 8mm film of the artists early life with his family, intimate clips of him chatting with his father and going back to his old family home. There are times when the artist talks openly and freely about his process and his reasoning for doing things in the way that he does. Clips from some of his exhibitions show the scale and beauty in his work in a way which can only be surpassed by seeing the work in life... The clips give you a sense of the detail and depth of the work and is a testament to the love and care that he puts into every tiny element of every single piece he produces.

It may be that this documentary was filmed and directed by the artists brother that I found it so touching and personal... I am not entirely sure that I can put my finger on exactly what it was that gave me that feeling. In any case, it is a very real, honest and personal look at the life and work of an artist whose work is a gorgeous examination of beauty and innocence. An artist whose work has made its mark in art history as being the first to portray black children as the subjects of innocence and beauty. If you are at all interested in fine art, it is a film which you must watch. Info: Ruud van Empel is represented by Flatland Gallery Amsterdam and Stux Gallery New York.

This month Lime Magazine gets talking to the talented writer behind the hilariously biting satire that is Blackta

W

hat is your play Blackta about? Blackta is about a group of friends, all competing in a competition in which there is only one prize and no such thing as second place. It’s about claustrophobia and thwarted dreams and when friends become frenemies. You are best known for your work as an actor, why did you decide to write a play? I’d been writing a lot of film scripts and not getting much joy with them. People kept suggesting I should write a play. There was this collective frustration in the air, amongst black actors myself included. It’s best to write about what you know, so one day I went home and started penning down scenes based on me and my contemporaries. I didn’t plan for it to be satirical but then the world of acting can be so absurd that I suppose it just fitted that medium. Do you plan to write more plays in the future? Oh yes! I’m half way through my third play. It’s addictive writing plays. The most satisfying thing about writing plays is that you create a world and people in it who get brought to life.

Do you relate to any of the featured characters in Blackta, if so please explain? I relate to all of them, in that they are inspired by people I know, but especially Brown. Brown has a lot of my traits and is essentially a man propelled to think outside of the box. The type of individual that sees a dead-end ahead and veers left. Do you feel that you or your peers have faced race-related discrimination whilst trying to make it as an actor? Well in fact the idea behind my play Blackta came from a conversation I had with a group of actor friends. One guy recounted a story of how he told another actor about a role he was playing in a TV drama and his friend said: “‘Oh, you’re playing the Blackta part – you know, the friend to the protagonist. The sidekick”. We laughed in that moment but it was in part out of sheer frustration that in fact the playing fields aren’t level. Amongst my group of friends we would often find ourselves auditioning for the same part, usually that part would be the drug-dealer or the guy-done-good from a broken home.

What advice would you give to other young males who wish to pursue a career in acting? Advice I’d give to young aspiring actors is go and train at a top drama school, hone your talent, then strap on your armor and go to war! Perfect the art of auditioning and you’ll be just fine, but get in the habit of creating your own material, write a play, understand every aspect of your craft and you’ll reap the benefits. The cast is quite small, were you able to encompass your vision with just seven characters? The cast is small. Strangely though, Blackta is a beast of a play. The themes and journeys are so epic, and the stakes so high at all times that it sometimes feels like a cast of 20. I like exploring things on an intimate level, as an actor, I want to write parts that people want to play. My only regret is not having a female character in it, but I think the black -tress story is its own thing

FLASHMOB Lime rating: Words: Vernia Mengot When I heard about FLASHMOB I was a little too excited by the sounds of an unusual dance fusion on stage. Having sat through the first five minutes it seemed my great expectations were not exactly exceeded. There was a mixed crowd and it was a semi-full house. The minute the stage lit up and the professional dancers entered I couldn’t decide whether I was, at all impressed. I could grasp the concept was a mix of contemporary, street, urban, salsa and tap. But it was all a bit too much, the first half of the show didn’t flow very well, but I did enjoy Latin dancer Edwar Ramos, Sky 1’s Got To Dance (2011) partners Alleviate (Renako McDonald and Nicolette Whitley) and So You Think You Can Dance winner (2009), Charlie Bruce. I could feel their emotion and sense their chemistry with the music. It was very moving and I felt engrossed in their

connection to performing. During the interval my cousin and I were a little apprehensive about what more they could possibly do. To our surprise they commenced with a BANG! The Elektrolytes this year’s winners of MTV America’s Best Dance Crew were on fire and Alleviate where even more amazing! I loved the energy; it was almost like we began watching another show. The dancers were on point and the Elektrolytes- cheeky chappies from the US were easy on the eye!

After a bit of interaction with the audience at the end the crowd were on their feet and we even bust-a-few Salsa moves. How is the Gary Lloyd studio running? I had that running and did that for a while. It’s on pause but the workshop was running for two years.

director Gary Lloyd has a long list of theatre and television credits. Having worked with international stars including Will Young and Girls Aloud, he has choreographed and directed Thriller Live in the West End as well working on The X-Factor and the Royal Variety Performance in the presence of Her Majesty the Queen. In this interview Gary tell us about the feel-good production Flash Mob and his passion for dance.

Tell us a bit about the ideas surrounding the production Flash Mob Flash mob is as it says on the poster, it’s live! The idea was to put together acts that have been involved in reality TV dance shows, that are professional and it showcases each stars talent. What was the response like when Flash Mob was at the Edinburgh Festival Fringe? It feels like we have only literally just come back! It was amazing. I think we were just enjoying what we do. There’s going to be a lot of talent on stage including stars from Sky One’s Got To Dance, BBC’s So You Think You Can Dance? and MTV’s America’s Best Dance Crew. What can the audience expect? I think a real variety of stuff really. The show is catered for all ages and it’s most definitely a family show, we’ve got a bit of everything for everybody. What advice would you give to someone who wanted to follow in your dancing shoes, in choreography? Don’t do it if you have any doubts whatsoever. It’s so much tougher now than it was when I came into the industry. You have to have thick skin, discipline and really want it.

There is always someone behind you ready to take your place something out of the show. Has choreography been something you were passionate about from a young age? Yes- since I was about six years old. I started in ballroom and Latin American; when my parents moved around, that took me to different dance schools. You have also choreographed and directed things like Thriller Live in the West End, worked with international stars including Will Young and Girls Aloud as well working on The

X-Factor and the Royal Variety Performance. What’s next? Well after Flash Mob, I’m doing a show called Top of the Pops Live, which is a concert show. I’ve directed and choreographed 20th Century Boy and then Thriller Live is going to Brazil. What keeps you grounded? I think the main thing for anyone is organisation; be prepared and know what you’re going into. Have everything ready, have all your tools and ideas ready to go so you’re not caught off guard. There is always someone behind you ready to take your place. Who inspires you the most? Gene Kelly and Michael Jackson. Tell us something we don’t know about you. Adele-Skyfall In keeping with Bond, the secrecy surrounding who would perform the much coveted signature for the next instalment of this very British franchise was telling. Indeed it is only fairly recently we have found out that Adele was due to be the singer. gymnastics of I Will Always Love You (1992) but the fact that despite all her problems she was one of the most gifted vocalists it is clearly evident in this section and the need for some form of critique of Skyfall is required the issue of whether it is good or bad recedes into insignificance because Skyfall is really about cementing Adele’s credentials as one of the most successful UK artists for a very long time. She joins an illustrious line of Bond theme singers like Dame Shirley Bassey, Gladys Knight and Madonna (the image morphing Madonna’s version being one of the poorer themes). Skyfall for the record is certainly quite good and Adele does what she always does and that is make you feel the Salaam Remi who has worked with names like Nelly Furtado, Nas and Jazmine Sullivan. It features a heavy hip-hop beat that sounds similar to Dizzie Rascals Fix Up Look Sharp (2003) which Dizzie in turn sampled from Big Beat by Bill Squiers taken off his debut album The Tale of the Tape (1980). Kelly who actually wrote the lyrics to the single adds the duet component to this new version and he is note perfect.Rather like Adele’s Skyfall, I Look To You is less about whether this is a great song (re-vamped by Kelly) and more about the fact that this is a song celebrating the amazing talent of Whitney Houston who could never quite defeat the demons that we all have inside of us. Interestingly he has a significant following in the US which is no surprise because he is blessed with a soulful, beautifully clean and clear vocal. He has steadily been pushing various musical projects like the For Those Who Wait mix-tape released this year which featured in the main some classy soulful numbers but also saw Daley evidently experimenting with different sounds. With this particular single Daley drops an up-tempo number which samples the huge classic by Blue Boy, Remember Me (1997) and it is a banging cut. TV spectacle that is more about the theatre of the individual artists’ journeys while trying to forge a music career rather than the actual music at times. That said however despite many negative aspects to it, stars are found. While winning the show does not always guarantee musical success and indeed most of the time winners disappear into the graveyard of X Factor winners the show is a huge platform for all those that take part. So Misha B is a case in point. Since taking part she has cut a swathe through all those other contestants that took part as the most successful (at present) from the 2011 show. Her first single Home Run (2012) blasted its way to number 11 in the national charts and now her second single Do You Think of Me seeks to build on that success. A slower number to its dance influenced predecessor it sounds like it will once again do well in the charts. ºSo Lime got some very limited time with the in demand Misha who literally had some ten interviews in just a few hours but X Factor has certainly helped in keeping a professional attitude. She was completely lovely throughout maintaining an air of interest when it is certain she faced the same questions throughout the day. What inspired you to be a singer? Michael Jackson (who is my biggest inspiration) just made me want to become the best singer I could be. In what way has becoming an artist if indeed it has lived up to your expectations? I think it is more of a journey, you cannot wake up and then suddenly you are an artist it takes a lot of time and dedication. For me the best thing that I have learnt is that you cannot be afraid of learning

coming out at the end of the year on a free download and so there will be a bit of spitting on the mic there and so look out for that but I am primarily a singer and that is what I love doing so.

Do You Think of Me your next single is a slower number to Home Run - explain the tack a bit more. Yes it is and Do You Think of Me is just about missing someone and wondering if they are thinking about. It is a song about missing generally whether someone has died, a lost relationship or whatever it’s just about those feelings. It’s funny now that I have moved to London from Manchester I really understand what it means because I am definitely missing my family and friends.

And lastly what are your specific plans for world domination in 2013? I cannot say much but I know there will be a whole load of things which I just cannot wait to let my fans hear and see.

What does community mean to you? Community means working togetherness and working together to make whatever or wherever you are the best it can. At the moment I am trying to work on myself and improve myself so the youngsters see that you can make it but you have to work hard. What I do however do is when I have time I always go down to the youth clubs in Manchester and now over here in London the UK to talk with the kids and give them encouragement to achieve and be the best that they can. What have you been up to recently? I have been doing prep for an album project, gathering together all the ‘stuff’ needed to compile a collection of previous releases (tracks from albums as well as numerous individual singles) and it’s proved to be very time consuming. You’ll be headlining at SSW2 this year. Are you looking forward to it? I always love performing. Appearing before the SSW2 crowd should be great. How do you describe the feeling when you’re performing on stage? I seldom attempt to describe that feeling. Not only can it be different each time – yes standing on a stage is an adrenalin rush - but the excitement is always unique, driven by time, place and most especially the audience – and the sound of the room, the lateness of the hour (5am after a long flight will definitely alter ones feel for a show). However, wherever, whenever, as soon as the music starts and you hit the stage, everything else becomes unimportant. Singing has always been a pleasure for me; on stage that pleasure is magnified exponentially. Throughout your career so far what has been the highlight? There have been too many to pick just one as I’ve had a very long career. 30 LIME MAGAZINE 2012

Tell us about some of the artists, songwriters and producers that you’ve worked with... Let me mention just a few, first Latti Kronlund, who wrote and produced my first solo single. A tall, generous, talented fellow, who sought me out after hearing me sing in an obscure show at the ICS in London - because he loved my voice. We worked together, on and off, for some time before he wrote ‘Where Love Lives’ and it was he who later ‘shopped’ it to Arista. I got my solo recording deal on the back of that song’s success so he will always have a place in my affections. Next let me mention Frankie Knuckles, who I had the pleasure of working with in New York for my second album. Not only is he a great producer but he is also a lovely man. I have to mention singing with Jocelyn Brown - we sang ‘background vocals together on ‘Come Back (For Real Love)’ - there’s a humbling experience. She has an incredible instrument, a big voice packed with so much good stuff, it makes me wan’a shout whenever I hear her live. However, although she might rightfully be haughty and proud, she is, instead, warm and welcoming, and a great

cook. Working with Darren Rock (DJ Rocky) from Xpress2 was a pleasure. We had a great time making our co-penned single ‘In The Blood’. The list of folk I have had the pleasure and the privilege of working with is pretty long. There are also numerous unsung heroes mix engineers, songwriters, musicians. Suffice it to say I have worked with a lot of wonderful, talented people and know just how fortunate I have been to have met them all. I hear you will be releasing two new album projects that are an exclusive digital collection of both your major and independent releases, how is that going? The projects are still in process, with so many disparate pieces of the puzzle to collate the project is taking time and effort to tie up but we’ll get there in the end. What would be three words that you would give as advice for those wanting to break into the industry? Three words! Only three? Ok try these, ‘Be entirely unique,’ or ‘Do it yourself’, or ‘Be very fortunate’. There are no rules, no sure path to follow, not

any more. Success can come in many ways, with or without first signing a recording deal. For some the big break never comes, no matter how talented they are. However, if your passion is to make music then make music.

COMMUNITY What’s your idea of helping out in the community? I have just moved into a new community and right now I’m simply getting to know my neighbours and neighbourhood. However, whether talking about the place where you live, the people you love or the music ‘community’, first you must acknowledge that you are part of one; that your actions have consequences. Treat your chosen ’community’ with respect and demand the same of others. Keane won the Open Mic competition with a scintillating performance. A year and a bit later after signing with BGM, Hatty has performed with people like Pixie Lott, Ed Sheeran and Wretch 32 to name but a few. Having interviewed her back in 2011 she was clearly a slightly rough diamond waiting to be polished. A year later and she has indeed proved that the potential BGM saw was the real deal. At the headquarters of BGM Hatty is busy putting the finishing touches to an acoustic cover version of Angel’s song Wonderful for the MOBOS while juggling interviews through the day. Walking in with a definite confident swagger with some killer high heels she definitely looks like a star but she still remains at present that down earth teenager from a year ago. So Hatty it was a year or more when we last met-how have things changed and progressed? Well last year I feel like I was still growing and trying to find my sound I feel like I was five back then it is madness! When you met me I still was not sure what I actually wanted but this year I know exactly where I am

lison Limerick scored success in the 90’s with the huge club anthem and her first solo-debut “Where Love Lives” having worked with many famous artists and songwriters, Alison continues to sing live, for PA’s with her own band. Singing soul/jazz, in various venues across Europe; Alison is one dance diva of house music. Ahead of her appearance at the Scottish Soulful Weekender this month, Lime caught up with her about her most recent album projects, working with producers and her independent releases.

When you met me I still was not sure what I actually wanted but this year I know exactly where I am going, we have the right vibe and we have the right songs. I am happy now with what I have right now going, we have the right vibe and we have the right songs. I am happy now with what I have right now. I remember you went into the 6th form and you were going to study Physics and Chemistry while pursuing musichow did that go? That was the worst year of my life because firstly none of my friends came to the same school then I was hardly there anyway so I could not make any friends with these new people anyway and my mind was in other places. On one day I was supporting Ed Sheeran and then the next day I was sat down in a Chemistry lesson. I just felt so drained and I felt that I was making myself low. Going to school did not really make me feel that I was actually doing my best for my music career so I quit at the end of last year

because it was just getting too much. That must have been a difficult decision? Yes definitely and the last straw was when I had all my exams and I just realised that it was not something that I could continue trying to do-this is what I want to do I do not want a normal job. So who is Hatty Keane as an artist? I am pop but I am edgy and urban it is not cheesy stuff. Best Kept Secret my first single perfectly encapsulates what I am about really. You have supported massive acts like Labrinth, Pixie Lott, Ed Sheeran who has been the most interesting to meet? They were all great but I recently met Wiley. He was really interesting because

The new single No One Loves You is quite different to your first two releases. I would describe it as a mysterious kind of vibe at first and then it breaks into some crazy House beat and it is really catchy and if you played it in the club people would go crazy. We actually had a writer in for the single but we bounced off each other and I prefer that because you get a vibe and then you can make something better. And when will we be seeing an album from you? Well we are getting the album ready so No One Loves You will be on the album but we have other things we are doing in the meantime. I am really excited about a video coming out for a song called Ride which is a cheeky song it is kind of reggae vibe. The video will shock because it is based on a B movie template and I am like this bad ass who is quite dangerous but it has this really cool twist so look out for that. That Girl Lime rating: Words: Maxine-Laurie Marshall Ironik has been a bit quiet of late, but he’s donned his signature sunglasses once again and has launched his own label, 3starz. To mark the launch he’s collaborated with one of his first signees, JoJo F, on the single That Girl. The track is a bout a girl who doesn’t fulfil her potential but has got stuck in a spiral of drugs, drink and promiscuity. That Girl starts strongly, with a high pitched male vocal from JoJo F echoing over a haunting backing track. About 40 seconds in, the track steps up a notch and continues onto the chorus. The second verse comes

from an auto-tuned Ironik and the last verse is spoken and seems to be an attempt to highlight a deep and meaningful thought process. However, it slows the track down and is where I start to get bored. The video, directed by Rob Vanderman, sees JoJo F tell the story from a motorway bridge while it flashes back to different scenarios of ‘that girl’ in a club. It’s a good one watch video; it has a few nice camera effects and tells the story well, but once you’ve seen it there’s nothing to bring you back to watch it again. Flying higher: Isongwriter and

t’s taken the singer,

producer Angel (Sirach Charles) approximately eight months from his debut solo single Go In Go Hard to reach a stage where he will be sharing the stage with artists like Kendrick Lamar and Tulisa in November. The single was of course not the beginning of his journey and it has been years of hard graft and a phenomenal work ethic that has seen this talented West London artist burst onto mainstream. His second single Wonderful built on his debut success and he was richly rewarded with his first number one on the RnB UK chart. So sitting with him at Universal studios on the cusp of dropping his third single Time After Time, Angel answers the question: ‘how was your day?’ with a contented and simple: “My day has been wondrous I am happy that I am here breathing.”

Sum up what the year has been like for you. 2012 has definitely been a very successful year for me and the team. From 7minutes Before Time (2012) to the whole Go In Go Hard (2012) with Wretch (massive shout to Sneakbo and Giggs!) and then the Wonderful trackthe reception has been amazing. Why has this been the right time for you because you are not new to this music thing? Apart from God being so wonderful and letting what he has written come to live it is just that time it’s that era where they understand the music that I have been doing-in fact the music that loads of us have been doing for the greater part of fifteen years! Why did you decide to go solo and perform because you could have stayed as a writer and producer behind the scenes?

Words: Semper Azeez-Harris

I like the vibe of the crowd, I love being on stage, I love performing my music. It is like having a song out with no video sometimes you don’t understand the song until you see the video and that is the same with me when you see me perform it you really understand my music.

and the mistakes I am making. So in the song I do not want to break-up with this main girl that I love and though I have mucked-up I hope that she forgives me. The message is if you really love someone unconditionally then you will be able to take a lot of things.

Have to ask about Wonderful the message in the track seemed to really resonate with people. For me Wonderful is a bigger statement for the public and so it did resonate with people. Personally the track was about me saying this is who I am. People do stereotype and so my tattoos, my dress sense and the lyrics I talk about may make people think in a certain way but whatever it is-this is me and I am not going to change!

Is this music thing as good as you expected? The beauty of my life is every time I can check my email and there is something new and exciting and that is great.

Time After Time will be your next single. Time After Time is basically about me acknowledging the wrongs that I am doing

Of course, recent off-screen events have taken the headlines, but we think there is still enough interest in this series from genuine “Twi-hards” to make this a smash hit. Not gonna lie, I may well be part of the crowd myself.

The Twilight Saga, Part 2

OK, to try and restore some of my flagging credibility (I suspect it’s too late for that), here are some of the picks from the London Film Festival getting a general release this month. As well as the entertaining ‘The Sapphires’ there are a couple of heavy-hitters that are unmissable. ‘Amour’ is the latest offering from Michael Haneke. It’s the heartbreaking study of a man’s struggle to look after his ailing wife as the onset of dementia strikes. The central performances are superb, they draw you 34 LIME MAGAZINE 2012

in from the very start, and although it takes it’s time, the film is compelling. I can safely say that I will never want to watch the film again, but that is because it was such a traumatic experience. Mads Mikkelsen is the headline act of ‘The Hunt’, another stunning drama that debuted at the recent London Film Festival. The story follows the devastating effects of one girls lie and the effect it has on a small community. The answers are never clear-cut and this gives rise to some uncomfortable questions throughout. If you like your films epic, then it doesn’t get much bigger – or better – that the restored version of

Another film which feels just as epic, in terms of runtime at least, is ‘Laurence Anyways’. Xavier Dolan delivers more stylish entertainment as he tells the story of love across various divides. This is surprisingly engaging stuff, and the grand scale somehow makes it all work even better. Colin Firth and Cameron Diaz make for an unlikely comedy duo in ‘Gambit’. It’s something of a theme this month as Bradley Cooper and Jennifer Lawrence also team-up for ‘Silver Linings Playbook’. The trailers for both look “interesting”, shall we say. Clint Eastwood makes his latest bid for Oscar glory with ‘Trouble with the Curve’. The screen veteran stars with Justin Timberlake and Amy

Adams in a story of baseball and family. Good old-fashioned values that seem to populate all of Eastwood’s recent films. Tyler Perry takes on his first mainstream role in starring as Alex Cross in a movie of the same name. He’s taking on the role made famous by Morgan Freeman in ‘Along came a Spider’ and ‘Kiss the Girls’, and it’s going to be fascinating to see how his usual audience react to him fighting crime rather than wearing a frilly dress. A few other titles worth mentioning are ‘Sightseers’, a dark comedy about murder and caravanning, ‘Here come the Boom’, a film that apparently sees Kevin James become a martial arts star and ‘Rise of the Guardians’, a sumptuous animation that is sure to please the kids. I can’t end this roundup without mentioning another re-release. It’s the 20th anniversary of ‘The Muppets Christmas Carol’, and to celebrate you’ll be able to catch it on the big screen once again. Perfect family entertainment and just the thing to get you in the festive mood.

Skyfall Bond is back, and ‘Skyfall’ is one of the best adventures the ageing superspy has ever been involved in. The previous arc created by ‘Casino Royale’ and ‘Quantum of Solace’ are gone, and this is a wise move. The shadowy organisation might make for a more believable threat, but Bond needs a villain he can pummel into the ground. Javier Bardem is just that threat, and it’s all manner of pummelling that he has in mind... The influence of ‘The Dark Knight’ is everywhere. Music cues, action sequences, even a reverseengineered bullet sequence are present, but this is all done in a Bond style. Craig is looking old now, but The Master Paul Thomas Anderson is a director you can rely on for some good old-fashioned acting fireworks. He extracted a remarkable performance from Adam Sandler in ‘Punch Drunk Love’ (honestly) and turned Tom Cruise into a charismatic beast in ‘Magnolia’. Most of us will also remember the outstanding Daniel Day Lewis leading turn in ‘There Will be Blood’, complete with comedy moustache and “I drink your milkshake!” quotes. This film has been eagerly awaited, and I’m pleased to report that everything is present and correct when it comes to the 36 LIME MAGAZINE 2012

rather than trying to hide this with an ill-fitting wig or dodgy stunt-double – as was the norm in previous 007 outings – director Sam Mendes uses his ageing star to great effect. The action is superb, with a fantastic opening and some incredibly shot sequences in Central London. It gives it all a great sense of

grandstanding by Philip Seymour Hoffman and Joaquin Phoenix. The pair have delirious fun shouting at one another and even engaging in some violence that will make you wonder if the “method” has gone too far. The rest of the film? I honestly have no idea. It passes by, and

Rust & Bone Winner of the Best Film awards at the recent London Film Festival, ‘Rust & Bone’ boasts an excellent turn from Marion Cotillard. It’s the sort of performance that usually gets the attention of the academy, but it’s not at the expense of the film as a whole. Unlike the previously mentioned ‘The Master’, there is more on offer here to assist the on screen talent, like a well-mannered script and some deft direction. When a listless man, jobbing as a bouncer in a club, takes home a dangerously reckless woman both their lives are turned upside down. He begins to earn extra cash by fighting in underground tournaments and she suffers a tragedy at work that will test their stuttering relationship all the more. This is intelligent stuff, which takes more than its fair share of risks. They nearly all come off. Lime Rating: Starring: Marion Cotillard, Matthias Schoenarts Release Date: 2 November

End of Watch The set-up for this intense cop drama is a little forced, relying as it does on the tedious found footage formula that has been overused recently. This leads to an initial reluctance to allow yourself to be drawn into the film or the characters, but stick with it... ‘End of Watch’ is an excellent film which at times reaches the high watermark set by TV shows such as ‘The Wire’ and ‘The Shield’. Two buddies patrol some of the meanest streets in America. They talk about life, love and their families, but also know they have a dangerous job to do. Eventually they find themselves being

drawn into a drug feud with a ruthless gang who will hunt them down if they continue to cause them problems. The battle lines are drawn, and our two officers are left to fight for themselves. The plot plays it safe, but the direction by David Ayer is original. He knows how to work within the constraints of the genre, and even plays with it. The overall effect is a wonderfully crafted modern thriller. Lime Rating: Starring: Jake Gyllenhaal, Michael Peña and Anna Kendrick Release Date: 23 November

The Sapphires Is there anything wrong with a film that sets out to entertain? ‘The Sapphires’ isn’t clever, doesn’t have any big name stars in its line-up and even takes a few liberties with its characters but if you’ll see a more fun film this year, then you can consider yourself very lucky indeed. Four talented singers struggle to overcome the prejudices of their homeland in Australia, and set out to make a name for themselves by touring Vietnam at the height of the war. No one will take a group of spirited indigenous women seriously, but they find an unlikely hero in the form of a travelling musician who decides to become their

Argo Ben Affleck has made a considerable impact as a director. ‘Gone Baby Gone’ and ‘The Town’ won many plaudits, although they left me rather disengaged. They were well made thrillers, but nothing stood-out, and the majority of the praise seemed to be around the fact they weren’t stinkers. ‘Argo’ on the other hand is an absolute belter. Based on true events, we follow a determined C.I.A man (Affleck himself) who comes up with a

remarkable plan to save a group of US diplomats stuck in Iran following the revolution of 1979. The idea is to come up with a fake movie, and pretend that everyone involved is going to film, on location, in Iran. Once in, Affleck will extract the diplomats and they can all leave together. The tension that is developed throughout is superb. Affleck handles this with great skill, and there really is no mistaking it now. He is a major force behind the camera, and can even turn in a great

With several issues still bubbling away under the surface, and romance in the air, can the band keep it together or will their next performance be their last? ‘The Sapphires’ is thoroughly entertaining. O’Dowd is fast becoming a dependable presence in any feature film, and the stand-out is Jessica Mauboy, who not only sings everyone else off the stage, but also looks the part as a gorgeous screen icon to watch. get is that he [Dave] is an accumulation of a number of people. I know that there was an Irish uncle, who is still in the film, that the character was probably drawn from. I don’t think that there was anyone specific”

Based on a true story, some of the characters have been changed to fit the structure of the film. Entering the picture is flamboyant musician Dave, played by Chris O’Dowd. How much of his character is based on real people?

The setting for the film is 1968 outback Australia. Four young Aborigine girls set their sights in stardom, and to do this they must take on the prejudices of their fellow countrymen as well as the dangers of war torn Vietnam. The script is based on a popular stage play, but what was it about the film that appealed to the actors?

“The impression that I

“I loved the world and

“It was pretty chaotic. There were times when we had days off and went shopping, but it was just beautiful culturally everyone was really lovely and we respected that.” Co-star Shari Sebbens adds: “It was great. We had a couple of nights to get over the jet-lag. There were moments when we were grabbing lunch and it was hot and sticky but it was so much fun. A world away from where we had been.” “It was the first time I went to Vietnam, and I remember there was a scene on the riverbank that we were about to film as a cyclone was about to hit. This massive scene, and we had to stop and start. But it was great, and everyone was patient. It was hard, but exciting. I think it was the first time anyone had filmed in Vietnam” says Deborah Mailman, who

also starred in the stage production. Director Wayne Blair highlights how much of a big deal it was to film in Vietnam. “It was the first time a Western film had been shot there for 10-12 years. They welcomes us with open arms.” Mailman also spoke about learning the complex dance routines requires for the film. “it was hard, and it was fun. We had a great choreographer on board and it was pretty much being locked away in a rehearsal room, sweating, going through the songs until we got to the point where we could take it in front of the camera.” The final member of the The Sapphires is Miranda Tapsell, and she was introduced to the story when she went to see the stage production many years ago. “I saw [Deborah Mailman] in the stage show and I was so star struck. I was like a mad Beatles fan, so it was such an experience getting an audition for the film.” And what happened to the real life Sapphires? “They had a career, but

not in singing. They came back home and are still very active in health and education. They didn’t come back to singing, but have made a change to communities. The sisters actually came on set a couple of times, and worked with us on the indigenous language parts of the film.” Expanding on what impact the film has had, Sebbens says: “I think it starts a conversation which Australians aren’t necessarily that keen to have. We’ve heard stories from our mothers, aunties and grandparents about the racism and still experience it today.” “I think what is so great about the film is that it helps change the way indigenous women are portrayed and the perception of them. We’ve played victims of domestic abuse, or women just coming out of prison. Many negative things, but these women are very much three dimensional. There have been a lot of significant changes and funding for indigenous stories, and there has been a shift to embrace these stories.” the other girls add. ‘The Sapphires’ is released nationwide on 7 November. House is definitely here to stay for long time

BDJ Spen aka Sean altimore-based

Spencer is without doubt one of the most influential DJs and producers of his generation. A true advocate of spiritual house music, DJ Spen’s extensive discography of original productions, killer remixes and distinctive DJ sets have been grooving the dance floors since the early 90s. Inspired by hip hop he has also produced unique fusion of gospel, jazz, disco and house. More recently working on the label Quantize Recordings and headlining at the Scottish Soulful Weekender this month; Spen is one DJ who has developed his sound for the modern dance floor. Is this your first time at the Scottish Soulful Weekender? What’s have your heard about it and what can the weekender crew expect from your set? Yes this is my first time at the weekender. I’ve heard that it’s pretty good and I’m looking forward to participating this year. What kind of a set will you be playing and do you have any secret weapons you can share with us? As I am always in the studio, I always have loads of secret weapons. What I’m going to be playing is going to be determined by what I see the crowd is doing. I’m definitely a jock who is inspired by the people, so I am sure that I will be playing according to the overall vibe I get. Is there anyone you are looking forward to catching at SSW2 and why? The Motor City Drum Ensemble, Paul ‘Trouble’ Anderson and Tony Humphries - I’m definitely looking forward to hearing them. Tony especially has

42 LIME MAGAZINE 2012

been a big supporter of our music since the beginning and it’s always a joy to check him out! How does playing in Scotland compare to other countries or the UK if it’s your first time in Scotland? It’s going to be my first time playing in Scotland for a while but from what I remember party people in Scotland are crazy party animals, so I am looking forward to having a good time. How does it feel to have been on top of the scene for the last fifteen years or so that you have been working? To me the entertainment game is always a working progress. I believe in working hard to maintain visibility, and a good image. It doesn’t feel like I’ve been in this business for fifteen years because it’s so much fun! Doing something that I love to do is nothing but a blessing and I appreciate the love I get in return for the work I put out. Do you think House is having a renaissance right now and that the music is so strong it’s never really gone away? The music is just so strong that it never really goes anywhere. People try to name it different things and do it different ways, but the bottom line is that the music always survives. For me house music is uplifting and inspirational and I can’t say that about many other genres especially at the moment. House is

definitely here to stay for long time. And how do you manage to keep it fresh, new and I guess, vital? Is it a case of pressure as a legendary DJ/ Producer to always be one step ahead in the house scene? I work with quite a few talented individuals. Gary Hudgins, Irvin Madden, Thommy Davis, Marc Evans, Sheila Ford, Greg Lewis, and N’Dinga Gaba are people who I work with almost every day that help me to create the sound that you hear coming from Quantize Recordings. I’m blessed to do so many things and I can’t take full credit for all that I do. Since Basement Boys everything that I have done has been a group effort of some sort. These days it’s been a blessing to return to work with Karizma again as a DJ and producer as well. Recording & Producing must keep you busy. Do you have your own label and is there anyone or a track that you’re particularly proud of...are you psyched about any new stuff upcoming? What do you see as your greatest musical career highlights so far? I would have to say I’m particularly proud of the work I done with Marc Evans. He’s a great Vocal talent and his songwriting is second to none. I would have to say that the body of work that we’ve created for him under the MuthaFunkaz production

What was your first break and first big record and did it set you on your path? “A Feelin” by Jasper Street Company on Basement Boys label. Even though I had written quite a few records before that one, “A Feelin” was my first production. House and dance is so much ingrained in British music, are there any UK artists whose music you feel a real affinity for? Ziggy Funk, Neil Pierce and Sean McCabe as far as DJ’s are concerned, and Taliwa is a phenomenal singing talent. You grew up in Baltimore, Maryland, USA how much of an influence did the neighbourhood around you have on your path towards music? Were there any other major influences such as key people, DJ’s, producers or clubs etc? Baltimore was an awesome place to grow up musically. Being close enough to New York and Philadelphia, we had a good and vibrant music scene with DJ’s like Wayne Davis, Thommy Davis and Teddy Douglas, who also worked in record stores and nite clibs like Odells, which were also important to the legendary music culture that came out of the city. So after over fifteen years, what does the future hold for you? Quite a few things! I am really getting into the

engineering aspect of music. I really like taking material and making it sound its absolute best. Running a record label in a time when sales are not the greatest is a challenge, but I plan on expanding and growing Quantize Recordings as well.

name is awesome. The new label that I am focusing all of my attention on these days is Quantize Recordings, and working with artists like Erin Leah, Tracy Hamlin, LeRoyal, Ziggy Funk, and newcomer, Typheni, Is awfully exciting.

Lime gets talking to renowned DJ Spen.

And before you leave us, can you tell us something you think we should all be listening to before we head out the door to SSW2? Erin Leah “Radio Billie Stereo Ella” is a quirky little jazz number that should be out then. “Drive Me Crazy” by Tracy Hamlin and “A Spiritual Love” by Marc Evans are gonna be what The Quantize team will have as high SSW2 and ADE priorities. Lastly, I am co-producing a track with Neal Conway called “Is It Love” by a phenomenal young lady named Typheni that I believe is quite amazing.
