Elk bar – The Big Smoke Lime Rating: Words: Amica Anselm Located in the centre of Fulham Broadway, Elk Bar owns the perfect after work establishment where the food fills you, and Mojito’s are their specialty. On our way to the Elk bar the weather was still scorching hot which was idyllic for the ultimate headlining “BBQ fest -The Big Smoke” situated in the beer garden at the back of the bar accompanied by state of the art ceramic BBQ. Approaching the door way we were confronted with two strapping men guarding the door way denying my plus one and I entry until we provided I.D. Once we whispered Lime Magazine into his ear, he pleasantly jumped aside and allowed me and my amused guest in which initially made us feel safe whilst stroking our exploratory egos.

Entering the décor was as ensemble of chandeliers made from elk antlers with red walls, soft leather sofas, as well as tea lights draped along the entwined wood branches creating a bare forest effect. As it’s not a pub in the traditional sense, after 9pm it transformed from a quiet but busy little eatery venue - to a bursting fun bar with bubbly crowd, filled with regulars and an in house DJ playing an eclectic variety of music to match the food and its

devourers. To accompany the flourishing mojito’s, cocktails and shuffles to the beats of Bob Marley and Ed Sheeran’s dulcet tones. The food was reasonably priced - we were recommended ‘The Big Smoke sharing platter’; which consisted of Onion rings, shrimp, chicken wings, fries, humus, flat bread and two tables worth more! It arrived with an array of sauces such as hot sauce and another even hotter, renowned for its

name Holy f*** which was extremely blistering like they crushed every pepper known to man and bottled it. Over all the atmosphere of this eatery was a masculine but entertaining venue, where the food is a major rivalry factor that mutually compliments the cocktails and is great for after work drinks. THE CHAMUCOS CLUBHOUSE Lime rating: Words: Semper Azeez-Harris Situated a five minute walk from Westbourne Park, Chamucos is a little bit of Mexico brought to the streets of London Town. It’s a small little bar and restaurant which you could easily walk past but I say NO-don’t do that because you might missed out on a rather interesting night. My guest and I were led down into the basement passing a throng of customers engaged in copious amounts of tequila. Seated behind the bar which I was told can be for any guest as long as the staff know the individuals was great. It was away from the twenty or so guests dining so catching that atmosphere was a little difficult but certainly if you are taking a date out then getting that seat is probably excellent allowing for some intimate tequila fuelled chit-chat. Big Feastival promises to be a boutique festival experience in a picturesque English countryside location just 90 minutes from London. The food is good and I was informed that the menu was created by traditional Mexican chefs. I warn you Mexican food is full of starch and carbohydrates so when the lovely tortillas come around with tantalising dips do not massacre them for you still have the mains which vary from very good fish dishes to more robust and gut wrenching steak dishes with copious amounts of beans. The real reason however to come to this Mexican haven is of course the This 20,000 Sq Ft Pop Up in East London by Old Street fuses local traders serving street food, cocktails and areas dedicated to relaxing and entertainment including a stage (which will show Olympic games amongst other things), a summer house for entertaining, a mini beach, table tennis, hammocks, graffiti artworks and petanque. I headed down to ‘As Greek As It Gets’ in Earls Court to sample a few traditional Greek dishes. The restaurant is a petite local eatery that can seat up to 60 people. There is a nice tourist vibe to the venue, portrait photos on the walls, Greek newspaper clippings an alcove ceiling and Greek music help provide a holiday ambience. For my starter I opted for Romano red peppers stuffed with feta & spinach baked in retsina- the portion size was very generous but the taste was. My guest chose ‘Spetzofai Piliou’- Spicy mountain Pilio sausages cooked with vegetables, this was nice although the sausages were quite dry.

When I heard that celebrated chef Raymond Blanc had opened one of his newest brasseries located directly opposite the famous Royal Opera House, I was keen to enter a world of French charm and taste the authentic, freshly prepared menu for myself. On a gorgeously sunny afternoon my guest and I strolled through the forecourt of Covent Garden, upon arrival we were greeted by a friendly host who ushered us to a window seat overlooking the terrace. With glass windows all around and the beaming natural sunlight we began sipping white wine as if we were at a French villa in Bordeaux.

To accompany our meal we sampled traditional Greek wine the Makedonikos White was described as cool and wild, it certainly was compared with the red version which was full of Plum and velvet flavours. When perusing the mains I did not have a clue what to pick, the owner kindly recommended that I go for the Arnaki lemonato - Lamb cooked in Lemon served with mashed potatoes. The large plate of Lamb was disguised in a creamy Mushroom, Lemon and white wine sauce. The presentation was substandard and the meal itself was okay. It was very wholesome and hearty which struck me more as grandma’s cooking then something to indulge in on a humid Friday evening. My guest chose the classic Greek main dish of Mousakas, which turned

out to be disappointing. The Mousakas was bland. Given that this is a tourist area maybe the recipe was toned down to suit all palettes and local customers. Either way it didn’t go down well.

The menu had a lot to choose from and the starters seemed fitting for the gorgeous weather, I opted for the mackerel and fennel salad and my guest, a well presented avocado salad. To follow our starters I ordered a succulent 8oz sirloin steak accompanied by new potatoes, a grilled tomato, pepper corn sauce and crunchy green beans. My guest took no convincing when it came to choosing her main course, a juicy slow braised lamb shoulder with olives and smooth mash. My eyes immediately lit up at the generous portion and the

aromas from her plate got our tongues wagging about how lovely the meal was so far. I’m a huge fan of puddings and dessert; so this would always be my favourite part of any meal, for this I chose a valrohna chocolate crumble and my guest had the lemon cream savarin. We both didn’t know what to expect as the menu didn’t give much away. Presented by a short glass filled with chocolate ice cream, a frozen yogurt moose topped with crunchy chocolate, that appeared like broken brownie crumbs was

definitely the unexpected; but the rich chocolate flavour rounded off my meal perfectly. My guest on the other hand was overwhelmed by the zesty lemon scent from her plate with a light fluffy sconelike sponge, lemon sorbet and syrup it could only be described as light and airy, a refreshing way to ending lunch. Overall it was a lovely experience for an afternoon with friends and the terrace was a beautiful setting for an evening fuelled by entertainment. The All Women of Colour Campaign will also provide the beauty industry with knowledge on how to work with all women of colour, with specially designed accredited certified workshops and seminars to educate and empower the industry to gain the knowledge for change. The campaign is motivational in providing avenues where brands new and old can come together to create an industry think tank, and cater for the needs for all woman, regardless of their skin colour tone and hue. DESIGN • CULTURE • FASHION showcases the influence of Pop culture on several design mediums from 1955 to 1976, including record covers and packaging by Pop artists such as Andy Warhol, Peter Blake and Richard Hamilton, and the work of fashion designers like Mary Quant, Vivienne Westwood, John Stephen and Betsey Johnson, design director of the leading New York boutique of the era. Pop graphics will be explored, from the British psychedelic artwork of Hapshash and the Coloured Coat, and the posters of the American West Coast rock venues in San Francisco, to the work of Martin Sharp for underground magazine OZ. The influence of Heinz Eidelmann’s design for the Beatles film Yellow Submarine on late 1960s design will be touched on, as well as the work of ‘Mr Freedom’ fashion designers Pamla Motown and Jim O’Connor, and the early 1970s work of fashion and textile designer Miss Mouse, aka Rae SpenceCullen.

made his way up from a young age with a passion and desire to fulfil his dreams of being successful. As a teen Vernon started work at the Desmond Murray salon and went on to win awards including Black Beauty Newcomer of the Year, Black Hair Junior Hairstylist of the Year, and the Learning Skills Council Apprentice of the Year. Currently juggling projects including designing and image consultancy along with styling for a list of high profile clientele; 2011 saw him as a Stylist of the Year Finalist at the Black Beauty and Hair Awards, 14 LIME MAGAZINE 2012

with that he continues to flourish as one of the most sought after hair-stylists and image consultants in the UK. This month Lime got chatting to Vernon about celeb hair, balancing his career and the key to success. Explain what is meant by making style effortless. What makes people effortless, it’s just less is more, a lot of the time people tend to think too much into what’s been asked of them to do rather than literally taking it to face value and putting the concept of their everyday life into perspective.

What’s the most outlandish hair request you’ve had? This may come across a bit weird. It’s quite ironic, I won’t say his name; he’s quite a wealthy business man of European origin and he wanted me to do braids in his hair. It was controversial considering the stereotypical images he was portraying and then to obviously want to have braids. Now, that may not sound quite outrageous, but it created quite a fiasco in salon being that it was quite hilarious. I tried to not do the service, I told him to go away and to make his hair grow, and thinking that he would come back to me and he came back four times, asking “is my hair long enough?” It was quite entertaining, not thinking that he would come back to me ever. But I do tell them (clients) that I don’t believe this is the way forward,

but I mean I can make it look good for you. He was happy with it. Which celebrity hairstyles are on your radar? There is one person I would like to get my hands on and that is Christina Aguilera. It just needs a bit of love and an identity needs to be formed. I don’t feel that she has a particular identity and she has such a strong character. I quite like the way Rita Ora wears her hair, it’s quite messy and it’s not too contrived, it’s quite a relaxed, chic and sexy look. I actually do like Shingai from Noisettes, I like the fact that she hasn’t had anything relaxed or chemicals in her hair, for me as a Caribbean person I know it’s really important that people in the limelight emphasise natural texture hair and I think she does that really well.

FASHION/BEAUTY Hair stylist, image consultant and designer Vernon Francois talk’s great success and effortless style What hairstyles do you believe will set the trend for AW12, in terms of European and Afro hair? Everyone’s doing all that dip-dye situation. I don’t think the dip-dye is going to be in, but what I do think is going to be in is more about colour clashing, people experimenting with colours towards the ends of the hair and less contrived, more relaxed shaggy hair; I think that’s quite in. And people are growing out fringes; fringing is not so exciting at the moment. And what about Afro hair? I think a lot of people are starting to go back to the more natural texture... I get the sense that people are happier and are going forward with natural texture. What have you got lined up for the rest of the year? Well I’ve just finished filming two TV shows. Rihanna – Styled to Rock which is airing as we speak, I worked with Lysa Cooper who is Rihanna’s stylist and I was responsible for making her

hair look obviously, the business. And Britain’s Next Top Model I was on there as image consultant inspiring the girls to talk about their insecurities and bringing them to the next step to use it to make them a better person. So I’ve done that which has now led on to me doing The Guardian, consulting and helping young people to be inspired, helping them to achieve whatever they want to achieve in life. I’ve started an accessories company, particularly tailored to the afro texture hair; I’m in the process of developing that and launching that next year. And I’ve got a documentary coming out; I can’t say much about that- It’s going to be quite controversial. I’m still doing hair for as long as I can and maintain it. I have also done motivational speaking at places like London College of Fashion. Your schedule is full of high profile clients, TV appearances and image Consultancy projects – with so much to focus on; how do you stay balanced?

Everyone asks me that, people say “how do you sleep?” I’m a workaholic, I have been since I was about eight or nine years old. My whole point is being in the position that I am now, I have been working since I’ve been able to achieve what I wanted to achieve. I’m just really passionate and I think if you love something and you want to do it you find the time to do it. It’s one of those things. I think when people say “I’ve been so busy!” it’s a lame excuse for not wanting to follow through what you want to follow through with. So if you really want to get something done, stop talking about it and do it. Share your most inspirational quote. It’s hard to be me but it’s harder to be someone that I am not, and that sums me up as a character. I’m over trying to facilitate somebody else’s ego.

What is the key to success for someone who wants to pursue a

career in hair styling? I don’t believe they have the true passion, unless they are prepared to lick the floor and start from the bottom up. I believe in this generation there are a lot of divas, that don’t understand the ethos of what a successful person is. For the obvious reasons; celebrities and the media. It’s just about being passionate and respecting yourself and understanding that it takes work, time and dedication. What’s the one lesson you have learnt from the industry that you didn’t know when you first embarked on your career? If you could sum it up when I first came into the industry the thing that I realised really quickly is that you can’t please everyone. to music, Jamaica and indeed a movement of people. While Bob Marley is the genesis of the power that this name carries, it is his children that have continued this rich history of the name Marley. Cedella Marley like her other well-known siblings carries the beautiful burden of the name Marley. Evidently a lady that does not understand the meaning of boundaries she oscillates with ease between singing, acting, writing, and a savvy entrepreneurial mind which manages to keep the business side of the Bob Marley legacy alive. Luckily she was able to spare a few moments outside of her ever increasing schedule to chat with Lime about her role as a designer, and of course being a mother of three children! Before we get onto fashion you have a career as a singer, the influence I assume is your father but why did you decide to get into music? Music was a natural progression. Our father wrote our first two singles

when we were Melody Makers but he actually really wanted me to be a doctor or a Lawyer. What inspired you into fashion? My mum and dad both played a critical role in my love of fashion. My father’s style was simple but powerful and my mum’s style remains true to our roots. She loves fabrics that are full of colour and print but still maintains a very feminine shape. Explain the genesis of your fashion line? I have had a passion all my life. My Great Aunt was a seamstress and she nurtured my love but getting into fashion occurred purely by accident. Touring with my brothers and sisters as Ziggy and the Melody Makers, I wanted us to stand out so I started to deconstruct different items to make us have a clear visual identity – I think the style could be best described as Bohemian Rastafarianism. Of course I have to ask about designing the Jamaican Olympic team kit how did this all come about? I remember talking to PUMA’s CEO, Jochen Zeitz

when he was in Jamaica last year and I said, “Yo! nice talking to you Mr. PUMA, I can’t believe you haven’t done anything with the Marleys yet.” And he said, “Well everything has its time.” So when PUMA approached me to design the Olympic wear I didn’t believe it so I am just blessed to be a part of the rich history that we made in this year’s Olympics. What challenges did you face when designing the line? I challenged myself more than anything but I really did enjoy doing this in all aspects. What was great is that PUMA gave me complete creative freedom to design and work. Of course Usain Bolt is the main draw it must have been amazing to meet the man that everyone is talking about? I don’t know Usain very well but he is a great talented athlete that we are very proud to have represent Jamaica and he is sure to go on to many other great things. From a fashion perspective what do you have in the pipeline?

We are always working on new collections. Last year we launched my first swimwear line High Tide but we have now headed back to the drawing board for the next collection.

What has been the best bit of knowledge that you were given that indeed gave you power? Trust your own instincts and anything you put your mind to you can accomplish. And lastly with the global spotlight boosting Jamaica in so many ways, where do you hope to see Jamaica in the next five years? For Jamaica I would love to see better Hospitals, I would love to see more parks where children can come and play without fear . . . and of course I would love I Jamaica could pay off the IMF! Exhibition This year the Tate Modern plays host to Damien Hurst’s exhibition like no other and it’s the largest survey of Hirst’s work to be in the UK to date. The exhibition shows key works from the artist’s most important series displayed together with some of Hirst’s most iconic works. Hirst has re-fabricated his two-part installation ‘In and Out of Love’ (1991), where viewers pass through a room of live butterflies – hatching, mating, laying eggs and eventually dying , before entering a room filled with a series of Hirst’s butterfly monochrome paintings. Also featured at the exhibition housed in a special viewing chamber is Hirst’s diamond skull ‘For the Love of God’ (2007) a

Ta contemporary im Okamura is

Canadian artist most well known for his beautiful and realistic depictions of African Americans and other minorities in urban landscapes. His stunning and positive depictions of groups of people who have rarely been treated with such dignity in art history are a powerful testament to his views on racial differences and the problems that focusing on these differences can bring to society. Born in 1968, Okamura obtained a Bachelor of Fine Art degree from the Alberta College of Art and Design in Calgary, Canada. He subsequently moved to New York and obtained his Masters in Fine Art from the eponymous School of Visual Arts. His career highlights to date include his paintings being 18 LIME MAGAZINE 2012

the further you climb up the ladder, the more you see ahead of you featured in several motion pictures, being selected for the prestigious BP Portrait award for the National Portrait Gallery in London five times and being short-listed to paint Queen Elisabeth in 2006. Tim took some time out from painting and marketing his latest Kickstarter project, â&#x20AC;&#x153;Heavyweight Paint,â&#x20AC;? to discuss his views on success in art with me. I see that you have had several solo shows since graduating. What year was your first solo show? It took a while because I was doing a lot of stuff for advertising agencies. Story boards and commercial art, illustrations for album covers and that type of thing... I had the first show of my work in around 1999 or 2000. It probably took about seven years from

graduation for me to do a solo show. Did you sell anything at your first show I think I sold one or two! I set the bar pretty low when I first started. I did not have any expectations. My early shows were breaking even and that was a victory to me. At what point were you able to go full time doing your work for shows? Around the time I started to do art work for films. I worked on a film in 2004 called Prime staring Uma Thurman and Meryl Streep. They featured a lot of my work and I also did a portrait of Uma Thurman which did not make the final cut of the movie. Right at that time, I was able to make a little bit of money from the film and

I also happened to have a couple of sales in London and elsewhere which helped me to make that jump. My friends helped as well. Considering everything you have achieved to date, what would you say success in the art world means to you? Having a gallery that supports you and understands your work, that is certainly a huge pillar of success. Being able to make a living off the work is another important aspect. I think the most important of all is really feeling like you are connecting with people. By your definition, would you consider yourself to be successful? Yes, to some degree. It is a little tough. When you

are in your own shoes, it is harder to see where you are at sometimes. I think from other peoples perspective, from their stand point, it is like a slam dunk. But the further you climb up the ladder, the more you see ahead of you. I never really sit and pat myself on the back or anything like that... What do you feel is your biggest success and why? The people I have connected with have been people I never would have expected to connect with. That is one huge thing. I usually get emails from France, Italy and Australia. It’s great! That is a sign of having some success... Working on the film stuff has been fantastic. Going to the premier of Prime... They gave me my own limousine! Conversely,

What would you say was your biggest failure or set back? There have been severalshows where I have been banking on making money to live from and I put everything I had into the show in terms of costs and the show was a dud. It is kind of a gamble and I still consider myself to be an emerging artist in a lot of ways. There are certain galleries where I do very well and at others it is more of a crap shoot. That is tough... I don’t think those were necessarily mistakes that I made, but more the galleries were the wrong ones to show at.

of the time, I have sold a painting down the line that someone was not sure about at the time of the show. Or I have taken the work to a different gallery, or pieced it together somehow and kept moving forward.

What advice would you give to an up and coming artist wishing to follow in your direction? You need to have a realistic plan. Luckily, I had some friends who were able to point me in the right direction in terms of having a short term, medium term and long term plan. My long term plan was always to be a painter. The medium term was at the point when I was interested in doing commercial art with album covers and books. That was a medium term thing, doing the commercial art, freelancing, hustling, having an agent... I had an instructor in grad school who said to me, “Listen, I will tell you the

same thing my instructor told me when I was in school. For anybody that stuck it out, you have to give yourself at least 10 years before your technical skills, your ideas and your opportunities mesh. After that, you actually start to do some stuff!” I always have that in the back of my head. He said, “I am not lying to you, I am not trying to scare you, it is reality.” It was almost ten years to the day when I did my first big show and I realised that he was so right.

It was not super formal, but it was the Royal Surveyor of the Queens pictures who had seen my work at the National Portrait Gallery in London, who invited me to come and speak with him at St James Palace! I had to check in with the Royal Guard there and I sat in this grand tea room in St James Palace speaking with him. That was a very unexpected moment. It certainly made me feel at that point that I had at least done something worthy of conversation.

For me when I have had shows and not sold anything, I have felt really down about it. How did you overcome that and continue? It is hard because of the financial repercussions. There have been times when I sat there and thought I was too ambitious with the work, and maybe I should have done smaller pieces... After a show, there is that kind of vacuum if it does not do well where you just sit and think. But at a certain point, you know that there is no plan B, so you just have to figure out how to survive in the wake of a disappointing show and just start working on the next one. You might as well do everything you can to start working again, as soon as you can. A lot LIME MAGAZINE 2012

-13 October Cedar Lake New York based company Cedar Lake Contemporary Ballet makes its highly anticipated UK debut, presenting three UK premieres at Sadler’s Wells. Led by artistic director Benoit-Swan Pouffer, the company is known for its “impressive articulation and intensity” (New York Times) in works created by some of the world’s most highly regarded dance makers. Its programme includes Hofesh Shechter’s Violet Kid, which examines man’s struggle for harmony within a complex and often horrifying universe. Performed by all 16 dancers, the piece is set

to an original score by Shechter using recorded audio text performed by the choreographer. Alexander Ekman’s Tuplet is also featured. Trey Songz New Releases-Chapter 5 Having checked the track listing for Trey Song’z fourth album simply named Chapter Five, track three’s title Panty Wetter immediately made me realise that this was definitely an album aimed at a female demographic. Songz it can be argued never really attains the same level of success as say Chris Brown, Ne-Yo or indeed Usher but this is probably because Songz concentrates in the main on the demographic that he successful in-the ladies! The ladies love the slightly muscle bound Songz who does those romantic rnb bangers that the ladies

can sing to. Concentrating on his female magnetism however does him a disservice because Songz is a real class act and regardless of your gender you cannot fail to acknowledge that the quality of his music is top notch. Chapter 5 is awash with massive named producers from Troy Taylor to

Gotye-I Feel Better Gotye who has been musically proficient since 2003 but it is in 2011 where he has really hit the global sphere. His absolutely brilliant track Somebody I Used To Know has been on all of the biggest stations for a considerable time and no wonder it was a an

intoxicating bit of music backed up by an equally intoxicating and clever video. So it is always hard to followup such smashes but try he must and his current single due for release is Feel Better which is about as different from Somebody I Used To Know as you can get. Motown influences run

Tinchy Stryder Tinchy Stryder is one of the biggest artists to come from the UK in the past four years or so. Transcending in many respects his career he has stepped into the business world and he has shown a tremendous about of savvy launching his own brand of headphones (which I hasten to add

are very good) and joining forces with Roc Nation to create Takeover Roc Nation. Anyway this is about his music and after Bursting Lights, Tinchy follows up with his next single Help Me from his fourth studio album Full Tank dropping in 2013. It’s the usual formula on the single in truth; anthemic sound, a sublime hook which is sung by a brilliant

A question might surround his ability to reach the same level as his contemporaries but for Songz it is probably not something that disturbs his mind-Chapter 5 further cements his status as a top draw performer who can do the units Out Now.

It is evidently a more positive and inspirational follow up that is not as good as Somebody I Used To Know but evidently shows his versatility. Released 3rd September female vocalist and Tinchy dropping some bars. The difference in this track is that Tinchy expresses religious yearnings as he asks God to help him. While the track in the main does not produce any real surprises Tinchy has to be commended because he has tapped into the

Lisa Maria Presley One would be forgiven for forgetting that the daughter of Elvis Presley sung. Her fame has been by proxy in some respects being the daughter of Elvis Presley and the ex-wife of Michael Jackson. Despite the profound amnesia went it comes to Presley, she is indeed a singer who is three albums deep with the latest being Storm and Grace, the other two being To Whom It May Concern (2003) and Now What (2005). A full seven years from that second album and her third album is upon us and the first single, You Ain’t Heard Nothing Yet is slightly ominous and emotionally raw. It immediately evoked thoughts of that classic by Chris Issac Wicked Game (1989) and it could easily be a soundtrack to a film by the eccentric Quentin Tarantino. Presley has probably faced a number of demons having struggled with alcoholism and suffered a nervous breakdown but she is still here and still fighting-cannot wait to hear the other tracks. Released 24th September formula that works for the masses and he has done this now for over four years. I think there are better rappers out in the UK but no one could contest the fact that he is one of the most successful UK rappers that have come from the grime scene. The rather striking Tanya Lacey is a brilliant singer and highly sought after song writer. Hits for Loick Essien on How We Roll (2011) and the Will i Am smash The Hardest Ever (2011) which featured giants like Mick “how long can he keep going?” Jagger and J “cougar” Lo are just tasters of this ambitious Bristonian. 2012 sees Tanya drop her EP Head Chef and her opening single Greatness sets the benchmark for this lady who exudes a calm confidence and an engagingly warm personality. Firstly, Greatness your debut single off the EP Head Chef put some meat on the bones! Everyone is on a journey and it is never easy and so for me my track Greatness is a reminder that whatever you are going through that having a positive frame of mind will always help. I take it that the track was written from some 24 LIME MAGAZINE 2012

personal experience. It was about my journey in music because it has not been a smooth journey for me. Sometimes you get frustrated about your development you want to develop faster which can make you feel despondentthe song is a reminder to me not to give up. What was you lowest point then? Lowest point . . . well it was difficult before I got signed because I was trying to get studio time and I was travelling around without any money. Then once you are signed and you leave a label and you get signed, it is weird experience because all of a sudden the family unit in a label is gone and you are with this

big label, it is a massive contrast! The track features the mercurial Kano - did you have him in mind from the word go? Greatness had to have Kano! I worked with him before a few years ago when I first came to London and I just knew he would be the right fit for the track and because I had the connection from a session we did a few years ago the hook up was fairly easy. Head Chef will be dropping in September explain the cooking analogy. Ahh well being in the studio is like being in a kitchen you have the different ingredients like

Your songwriting skills are brilliant co-writing Will I Am’s single The Hardest Ever but what is the greatest hook you heard which inspired you into music? That’s really difficult but it is people like Michael Jackson the hooks on Dirty Diana (1998) and Bad (1986) were amazing, Mary J Blige again her hooks were so brilliant and they always inspired me – I think that is where the soulful element of my music comes from – oh and of course Lauryn Hill’s Everything is Everything (1999) one of my favourite hooks of all time! What are your secrets to successful song writing? When you try and get too clever with a song then it can fall flat. You can get a bit self-indulged as an artist without realising it and then you have that reality check that if people do not buy into your music then you are not doing your job.

What have you learnt from some of the many collaborations that you have done? I have learnt that you should not discard an idea and I learnt that from Will i am. The hook that was written for The Hardest Ever was kind of discarded because the label did not really see much mileage in it. Will i Am then took the hook and did what he did. It taught me that you never know when a melody might fit in at a later date-Labrinth and Bruno Mars have a great work ethic and performing with Stooshe taught me to just have fun!

It sounds like a silly question and it probably is but what makes a good hook? It has got to be catchy after the first twenty seconds or so that you hear it so the next time that hook comes around you should be able to remember the words and the melody – it needs to just slot into your psyche effortlessly.

What does success mean and look like to you? I feel like I am on the way to being successful and I think that success is when you have made a positive impact on someone’s life-also I think being successful means that you are happy and contented. Dbanj Lime rating: Words: Cherise Davis When I heard Dbanj was going to be live in concert, I knew it would be a great opportunity for Afro beats to be a part of the Carnival Bank Holiday Weekend. Dbanj’s concert kicked off with a mix of warm up acts, ranging from RnB, Afro beats to Hip Hop. Some artists were on longer than necessary and it was proving obvious that DBanj was running more than fashionably late when it reached 10pm and all

the opening acts finished on stage. Regardless of this; the sounds from the band, DJ line-up and the host for the night (who was also late) Choice FM

one of House music’s biggest soulful event, Songstress Julie McKnight will be headlining from the United States to the UK to provide soul stirring lead vocals on her back to back anthems “Finally” & “Diamond Life “to the largely awaiting crowds. I started singing, professionally, at 16. I would sing the lead on demo tracks that producers wanted to shop. I was inspired by so many different genres of music. Jazz, funk, salsa, soul, classical, R & B were always played while I was growing up. Your new songs are “How soon is glory,” and “How soon is now?” What made you choose to feature on these songs and where would you like the success of this music to take you? I’d been asked to perform on tunes that were more “progressive” house but could never really connect to them. Once Jay Sealee sent the track with the lyric, I loved it. Songs such as “Finally”,

“Home”, “Diamond Life”, and “Bittersweet” were all produced and written by Jay “Sinister” Sealee. Have you ever co-written music or have performed your own songs on tour? I am actually touring now with all original music. It’s exciting to be doing my own work. What inspires you with song writing? Do you have any particular rituals? When writing, I generally hear a melody first. The feeling of a melody tends to lead to the lyric. It’s magical. When you are not touring what else do you get up to? When am I not touring (smiles) Usually, I’m still singing in small local clubs with my band. I’m always singing. You have collaborated with many talented producers including the likes of Sebastian Ingrosso, Dirty South, Jay Sinister and David Guetta what was it like working with them and the process you’ve had

to undergo in regards to your music? (Beat then lyrics, or lyrics and then the beat?) With these tracks, the songs were predominately finished. On occasion, the producer will ask if I am comfortable with a lyric and if not we switch it up a bit. What exclusive characteristics as a soul artist do you bring to the music industry that we have in 2012? I would like to think that I bring Soul to whatever genre I choose to perform. Whether it be House (in all its forms), R&B, Rock, Jazz, etc. You will be performing at Groove odysseys 3rd anniversary, what do you look forward to most about performing at this event? (How does a live crowd like at Groove Odyssey vary from other PA’S you do?) I am so excited about the show! There’s nothing like performing to a crowd that appreciates what you do. I’m very humbled that folks are still digging the tunes after all these years.

his month Lime catches up with Brit-Asian music group, RDB, who have taken the international music world by storm with their unique sound and style. Having pioneered the fusion of Hip Hop and R’n’B with traditional Punjabi Bhangra,

RDB have collaborated with the likes of Snoop Dogg, Public Enemy, Akshay Kumar and Ludacris. Formed in 2000 by Bradford-based Punjabi Sikh brothers Manj, Kuly and Surj, and now led by Manj and Surj along with bollywood songstress Nindy Kaur, RDB have brought audiences around the world a new genre of music gaining attention in the international media through their efforts to merge East and West musical trends into a new, unique sound. With over a decade of hits under their belt, RDB are now gearing up to play a series of sell-out tours, and will also release their eagerly anticipated new album Worldwide. You’re set to release your new album titled ‘Worldwide’ later this year, tell us about some of the tracks? The album has not actually been released yet. We have only released singles from the forthcoming album which we have planned to release at the end of the year. Why is the title ‘Worldwide’? To put it simply, we called it ‘Worldwide’ because we feel that music is slowly becoming a worldwide genre and we believe that the album incorporates the South Asian sounds across the globe – with the RDB twist of course!

MUSIC Your music is a mix of Hip Hop and R’n’B with traditional Punjabi Bhangra, is it challenging trying to break into mainstream music? We enjoy being versatile and bringing a blend of eastern/western music together. Being it traditional, old classics or a mix of hip hop and R’n’B, we like the idea of being the only one of its kind. Of course it is challenging to break into mainstream music as you have so many other artists competing with you but we believe it’s all about being unique and creative. As a group your musical influences were shaped at a young age, how were you introduced to music? Our parents have been great inspiration to us as they would take us to the Gurdwara from a young age and it is here where we got our first taste for music. We used to assist our father to perform in front of the local community at our local Gurudwara, playing the harmonium and tabla. This gave us a great understanding of our musical creativity and we mixed this with our passion for technology and started experimenting with

sounds. It is very crucial to have this experience as it guides you to a better sense of direction and a fuller understanding of why we enjoy music. What do you all individually bring to RDB? We all individually bring different ideas to the group. Manj brings his tuned lyrical vocals adding melody to the music where as Surj is constantly making sure the track gets used in the right place at the right time. How did you come up with the group name? RDB is Rhythm Dhol & Bass, Being punjabis we stuck a dhol in the middle of RnB How involved are you in creating your music? We are all so involved in creating music. We have a great passion for music and always think of setting a better benchmark. We believe when creating music, everyone involved must be in the same frame of mind, hence the majority of our team are family members or very close childhood friends. Dad (our secret weapon) lyrically writes most of our hits, Nindy (manj’s wife) is the female sensation for the

group and Pips (long term friend) is our UK Manager. We keep the group tight. You have collaborated with Grammy Award winning American artist Ludacris, snoop Dogg and Bollywood superstar Akshay Kumar. Who else do you have on your radar in terms of recording new material? We have been so lucky to have collaborated with some of the world’s greatest artist and of course plan to collaborate with many more. You’d just have to wait and see what our future projects involve as we always have something up our sleeve. Have you got any tours planned in the near future? We are currently heading

out to Pakistan for a few weeks, so if you are in Pakistan do catch us at the nearest venue near you.

While we’re at it, there is also another ‘Resident Evil’ film, again a tough one to get hyped up about... especially as we think we’ve seen all the previous films and have no idea what is going on in that particular universe.

us, and what better way to enjoy them than in the cinema? It kinda depends on what’s on, so here’s our look at what’s on offer for September. There are a slew of horror films that are hitting the screens off the back of FrightFest, the pick of the ones we’ve seen so far include ‘Stitches’ – A gory take on the classic killer clown concept, ‘Cockneys vs Zombies’ - a surprisingly entertaining effort and ‘Tower Block’ – more thriller than horror, but still boasting a couple of great ideas. Away from the festival, a chilling British film deserves your attention. Based on true events, ‘When the Lights Went Out’ manages to unnerve like the ‘Paranormal Activity’ films have done in the past. It’s low budget, but don’t let that put you off. One of the better films we’ve seen from the UK, and a genuinely creepy story. ‘House at the end of the Street’ sees your standard American set up for a genre horror movie... or does it? Jennifer Lawrence appears to be on scream queen duties, but we suspect there is something of a twist to enjoy in this one. Lawrence herself is good value in most things so it’s worth a shot.

Joseph Gordon-Levitt is back from his ‘Dark Knight’ duties in ‘Premium Rush’, a movie set in the world of bicycle couriers. The trailer looks like it’s fun, and any film that has Dania Ramirez in it can’t be that bad. Also you get to see Michael Shannon playing a villain (or that’s what we are led to believe), and that should give us a few clues as to how he will play Zod in the upcoming ‘Superman’ movie. Gordon-Levitt will also turn up is the stunning looking ‘Looper’ later in the month, essentially playing a young Bruce Willis. We will be reviewing that one next issue... it might just be the film of the year!

An all-star cast have assembled for this stylish tale of bootleggers and mobsters from director John Hillcoat. Shia LaBeouf and Tom Hardy are the Bondurant brothers, who run a liquor at the height of the Depression-era. The law tends to turn a blind eye to their activities, until a brutal enforcer in the form of Guy Pearce turns up. With everyone wanting a bigger cut, the brothers face a series of threats to their business and the divisions also come to light in their own relationship. Based on the reallife accounts by Matt Bondurant, this is not the Al Capone type film with machine gun toting wise guys laying waste to vast numbers of faceless goons. We get to know,

and even respect all the major players, even if Gary Oldman and especially Guy Pearce remain unlikeable. The pacing might put some people off, there are several moments when the audience are left to admire a rather lovely, lovely cardigan that Tom Hardy

The Sweeney Big and brash, just like the headlining duo who star in the movie, the big screen adaptation of The Sweeney is a British take on a genre that we’ve seen countless times before from our American cousins. A hard as nails copper (Ray Winstone) leads his team as they investigate a violent robbery. The gang that committed the crime think they can get away with it, and adding to the misery of The Sweeney, is an internal investigation. There are a couple of 34 LIME MAGAZINE 2012

stand out scenes, with an extended shoot-out/ heist looking every inch the polished hollywood set-piece that it is intended to be. It’s not original, in any sense, but it is at least enjoyable. Overall though, the film feels a smidge too long and a few of the contrivances begin to infuriate. Ben Drew

continues to impress, and his transition from music to movies is one of the more fascinating things happening in the film industry at the moment. Lime Rating: Release date: 12 September Starring: Ray Winstone, Plan B, Hayley Atwell

About as bonkers as it gets, this bizarre French adventure follows a day in the life of a man who plays different roles for a shadowy organisation. One minute a deformed beggar on the streets, the next a hideous monster kidnapping Eva Mendes during a photoshoot. In some ways this shares ideas with ‘To Rome with Love’, which is also out this month, but it’s done with a darker edge. By the time the central character goes home to his “wife” and his limousine begins to “talk” to other cars in a parking lot, you’ll have already given up trying to decipher what is going on. It’s entirely up to your interpretation, and that goes as far as trying to figure out if it is any good or not. We honestly couldn’t tell you. Paranorman 3D There are three slightly “spooky” animated films on the way. ‘Frankenweenie’ is brought to you by Tim Burton and ‘Hotel Transylvania’ comes out next month as well, both will be reviewed next issue, but in the meantime we have Paranorman. Norman can see the dead. It’s a gift, of sorts, but no one believes him and even his family think he is a freak. Bullied at school, Norman finds his only outlet is to speak to the deceased. Soon though, a curse that has been placed on his town means that zombies have been raised from their graves and now

Norman is the only person that can save the day. There are a handful of really grown-up ideas throughout this film, and it toys with death for large portions of the runtime. Some younger kids will find it all a bit too much, but they have “safer” options if needed. This is entertaining in the way that those PG films in the 80’s were, ghosts and ghouls can be scary but who cares? There is great fun to be had here, Paranorman is well worth a watch and coming out first, it feels fresh and original.

Exploding onto DVD and Blu-ray on 24 September is the mind-bogglingly violent extravaganza that it ‘The Raid’. Gareth Evans’ action opus is like nothing you’ve ever seen before, so prepare yourself for a night to remember. We loved the film when we saw it, so we’re delighted to be able to offer Lime readers

To Rome with Love Woody Allen continues his love letter to Europe, this time heading off to the Italian capital for a heady mix of music, celebrity and romance. Although not quite as compelling as the superb ‘Midnight in Paris’, this effort is still hugely entertaining and offers up a variety of ideas that are (nearly) delivered on.

It’s a brainstorming session which Allen has left largely unrefined for the big screen. The themes of celebrity and fame are presented in a heavy-handed manner, but the director does play with other concepts in an engaging and comical way. It’s still not subtle, and certainly not as elegant as ‘Midnight...’ but it’s well worth a watch. show that is now entering its fourth year. Hosted by Kirk Franklin a giant of Gospel music, the show has been a huge platform for emerging talents as they vie against each other for the coveted position of winning the competition. Pastor Donnie McClurkin is a judge on the show and he is a huge artist in his own right having won amongst other awards, three Grammys. Getting time to talk with Donnie he has an air of no nonsense (which has earned him comparisons with Simon Cowell) but he remains a pure gentleman inquiring on my day before any questions were fired at him. Despite entering his third season he remains completely fired up for the show and of course Gospel music! Why did you decide to come in as a judge? I came into the series in the third year because my friend C C Winnans left in the third show and suggested I do it. Since getting involved it has been phenomenal. We have all known each other for over twenty years, singing together, touring together and so we are all really good friends so it makes things a lot easier. What’s your opinion on the gospel movement here in the UK? You see I am angry about that question because there are so many great artists, groups, choirs in the UK. It makes me angry that the UK Gospel industry has not galvanised, has not understood that America is not the only place where Gospel should be such a big movement-some of the biggest artists have come out of the UK.

What are some of the great moments you remember from doing the show? We have so many with people singing astounding great vocals but the thing is this show is not like American Idol or X Factor it is about bringing talent but it is also about bringing an inspirational message, it is bringing a strength of a music form-gospel music that has been the foundation for so many music forms, jazz, rnb, hiphop it is the foundation.

Why hasn’t UK Gospel galvanised? They think they need America to validate them! They have been convinced that all of the credibility all the strengths are in America instead of making the gospel movement strong here. All the people want to come to America, everybody wants our stamp of approval and everybody wants to do the big concerts over here. Black and white artists from Scotland are phenomenal artists but there is no real camaraderie: People must work and develop the scene in the UK first.

I think that has been an issue even among the secular artists where people seek America for validation. Right that is true but even with the greatest groups like The Rolling Stones or an artist like Adele they only needed America for a greater visibility but they remain English artists, making English music – they have kept everything in its right perspective. In gospel it is the same thing – let it be known that this is British-Gospel is not an American music it is a global music for everybody!

What are you doing independently because of course you have your own career as a gospel artist? Well Sunday Best is taking a lot of my time and the show is growing so much – last year we had one million people watching, this year we have had over two million-it is the number one cable network show around the world. Right now however, I am now working on a cd and it will have people like Gladys Knight, Tremaine Hawkins singing on the cd so I cannot wait for that to be ready for release. Lastly when do Gospel fans get the pleasure of seeing you over in the UK? Well work is going on for a tour here called The King’s Men featuring Kirk Franklin, Marvin Sapp and me starting in September. collaboration between its partners whose objects are to develop the art and business of Carnival. Their vision is to create a greater awareness of Carnival Arts. Carole Morrison, recently appointed as the new creative director for the Carnival Village Trust has worked at senior level at Arts Council London and Creative Partnerships; now she will oversee London’s development agency for Carnival Arts. As the new director of Carnival Village, what does your role involve? Carnival Village is primarily an agency focussed on raising the profile of the artists and artforms of Carnival. Carnival arts in the UK was born out of the cultural traditions of the Caribbean communities of the 50s and 60s and some of our founding partners reflect this heritage and represent some of the key artistic traditions of the Caribbean islands namely steel pan, calypso and mas’ (short for masquerade or costume making). So, our founding partners include the Association of British Calypsonians (ABC), Mangrove Steel Band, Yaa Asantewaa Arts and Ebony Steel Band. We operate across two venues at the moment – the Tabernacle in Powis Square and the

newly refurbished building at the Yaa Centre just off the Harrow Road. Tell us more about your vision to create a greater awareness of Carnival Arts. My role is a strategic role; to raise the profile of the artform; foster critical debate and discussion, encourage creative collaborations and greater

opportunities for the artists all of this will be done through working with existing and new partnerships. We are really interested in developing projects with a range of artforms and also working closely with designers, composers, promoters and programmers. Of course, a key element of the vision is also to work with educationalists and young

You were selected for the prestigious International Leadership Programme run by the Cultural Leadership Programme funded by the arts council. What did this entail? Yes – this was an amazingopportunity to develop leadership skills by working internationally. I worked in Sao Paulo, Brazil and I was in Brazil when Rio won the bid for the Olympics in 2016. I was one of 18 people selected by CLP to work internationally. Other candidates worked in India, Senegal, New York, Singapore, the Caribbean, Hong Kong and China. Hilary Carty was the Director of the programme and there are now similar programmes run by the Clore Fellowship and the British Council. Freshwaters Consultancy, Caret and Medar Pysden managed the International Programme for CLP. I worked as the International Partnerships Associate at the Centro Cultural Sao Paulo in Sao Paulo, Brazil. For 5 months I worked closely with the senior leadership team of this Arts and Cultural Centre

COMMUNITY conducting research on international strategy for the organisation and developing partnerships in the region. Tell us about some of the work you have done on an international scale. Since working in Brazil, I was also invited to work in Kenya on a project and conference that involved the Aga Khan University and a number of other organisations including the National Cultural Centre in Nairobi and the Centre for Heritage Development in Africa (CHDA) based in Mombasa. Many African nations have become magnets for big business. My work in Kenya was mainly focussed on exploring the emerging knowledge economies and translating these into opportunities for artists and for the educational arena. I worked closely with many artists and arts organisations in East Africa and continue to have close links to the region. What has been the highlight of your career so far? I have been very lucky to date as I have always worked on things I enjoy. I have a background working on young people’s projects, with regeneration issues and within education and learning. I’ve always been interested in the arts – mainly visual arts, literature and film and I have plenty of experience working in Carnival

arts. I was introduced to working with Carnival arts by a number of important individuals. It is always difficult to name names (as you invariably leave someone out!) so I will limit myself to those who are no longer with us including, Peter Blackman, Geraldine O Connor, Randolph Baptiste, Vernon ‘Fellows’ Williams, Lawrence Noel and Larry Forde. It is because of their achievements that we are where we are now. So to answer your question - I have to say that where I am right now is a highlight of my career and whilst working in any artform is a challenge – particularly when the economy is so shaky - it is a privilege and a pleasure to be working with so many talented people who dedicate themselves (often voluntarily) to Carnival arts. What plans do you have for the organisation in the future? Our future plans including developing a year round programme of Carnival arts through forging

collaborations and extraordinary projects with new and existing partners. We’re exploring how our programme links with other art forms and arts organisations such as the Bhavan Centre and Apples and Snakes. How important is carnival in terms of bringing together a sense of community? Carnival as an art form already brings people together from across the generations and across cultures. We are working to extend the reach and understanding of this art form and cultural to all communities. What do you love most about Carnival? The thing I love the most about Carnival is tracing it back to the roots of resistance to Slavery and knowing that it is linked to a people’s ability to secure their own freedom. It’s a deep and rich history and something we should all know more about and understand. It is something

to be proud of and something that is included in the future programme for Carnival Village.

What does it take to be a great leader? For me, great leaders are centred and rooted in something beyond themselves. They also have the ability to apply each of their senses at the most opportune moments and they also always seem to develop new ones! Recently launching her new company, since starting her first business venture while studying at University in 1999; Hazel believes the real driving force for the launch of the 2Inspire network was the support of her family & friends. She says “I am surrounded by a multitude of extraordinary women who have supported me and have helped me to find my feet during really hard times.” Currently working parttime as Business Manager for a local authority alongside running Hair2Inspire and the 2Inspire network, Hazel spoke to Lime about her success in business and entrepreneurial spirit. What drove you start a career as a successful business women? Back in 1999, whilst studying my BA in Business studies I really

experienced the financial strains of university life and being a single mother, nursery fees had to be paid even though I was a full-time student and so I looked at how I could make extra money to get by. This period was definitely a difficult time for me financially and the driving force for me to start up a business. I always wanted to be able to provide the best for my child and knew I had to work hard to do this. Tell us about your brand Hair2Inspire? Hair2Inspire is a retail and wholesale supplier of virgin remy hair extensions

and lace wigs which has been operating since 2008. We specialise in supplying premium luxury products that are made from 100% virgin human Hair. What differentiates us from a lot of the suppliers in the human hair market is that all of our hair is 100% human hair and it is all sourced from the Country of Origin: Our Peruvian Hair is from Peru, Our Brazilian hair is from Brazil etc. We do not stock the imitation human hair that is flooding the market which is simply just sourced from China. The name Hair2Inspire was born from a desire to communicate that we as women need to realise our high net worth and acknowledge our beauty. Not just the external beauty but the internal beauty too – as that is what defines us as people. I think we all have a tendency to dwell on our disappointments, whether they are personal, professional, or physical but we all need to learn to

How do you balance being a working mum? Wow, this can be difficult at times but I’ve found that having a good routine in place really helps you to try and get a good work/ family/life balance. Adopting a Russian baby Morris and Becky were delighted when finally their long wait to adopt a baby came to an end. The adoption center called and told them they had a wonderful Russian baby boy and the couple took him without hesitation. On the way home from the adoption center, they stopped by the local college

so they each could enroll in night courses. After they filled out the form, the registration clerk inquired, “What ever possessed you to study Russian?” The couple said proudly, “We just adopted a Russian baby and in a year or so he’ll start to talk. We just want to be able to understand him.”

The bird legs exam A young college student had stayed up all night studying for his zoology test the next day. As he entered the classroom, he saw ten stands with ten birds over each bird and only the legs showing. He sat right in the front row because he wanted to do the best job possible. The professor announced that the test would be to look at each set of bird legs and give the common name, habitat, genus, species, and identifying characteristic.

The student looked at each set of bird legs. They all looked the same to him. He began to get upset. He had stayed up all night studying, and now he had to identify birds by their legs. The more he thought about it, the madder he got. Finally, he couldn’t stand it anymore. He went to the professor’s desk and said “What a stupid test! How could anyone tell the difference between birds by looking at their legs?” With

that the student threw his test on the professor’s desk and walked out the door. The professor was surprised. The class was so big that he didn’t know every student’s name, so as the student reached the door, the professor called out “One moment, son, what’s your name?” The enraged student pulled up his pant legs and said “You guess buddy! You guess!”
