INTERVIEW WITH SHARON D CLARKE Once on this Island By Sophia A Jackson Published July 30, 2009

5/8/09 10:07:25 pm
E Sharon D Clarke has appeared in many West End musicals including Mama Morton in Chicago, We Will Rock You and Rafiki in The Lion King. She played Asaka (Mother Earth) in the 1994 European premiere / Birmingham Repertory Theatre production of Once On This Island, for which she received an Olivier nomination, and will be reprising the role for this new production of Rosa Guyʼs book, My Love, My Love. Last year Sharon was a judge on the BBC1 prime time show Last Choir Standing and for the last three and a half years played Dr Lola Griffin in the BBCʼs Holby City. Letʼs not forget that she was also in the successful band, Nomad, most famed for the dance track, (I Wanna Give You) Devotion. Tell me how the tour is going for Once On This Island. Fabulously. We started in Birmingham, then Nottingham then we took time off to rehearse with the new children. Weʼve been getting fantastic feedback and the audience seem to be enjoying the show because itʼs uplifting. It works because you can bring kids, but itʼs not a kidʼs show. Itʼs family show – a love story, morality tale, dealing with race and cultural difference in Haiti. Itʼs about a girl who is dark-skinned who falls in love with a light skinned man. There are a lot of racial politics on the island and the Gods see her and have a bet on whether love is stronger than death. There are lots of different levels to the play. Itʼs been a joy to do and by the end youʼll be up on your feet and dancing. What attracted you to being in this production a second time around? I loved it the first time because itʼs a wonderful black musical, and there have not been many in the last few years. Itʼs a family show and something you can see as a family experience. Itʼs a way of explaining love to children; I love the piece and the music and being in it again. Now, Iʼm 15 years older I can see it from an older and wiser perspective. When I first played Asaka, she smoked, and was flighty, and sexy. This time, the director (Susie McKenna) wanted us to look at how the island works and to bring our own vibe by exploring different ways of working. It is wonderful for an actor to have that kind of opportunity. Tell us about your character - Asaka, Mother Earth. Sheʼs like the Greek goddess, Demeter, or mother of the earth who looks after the seasons. Asaka is a guide for Ti Mouneʼs journey and offers her shelter and food. Before when I played Asaka, she was more alluring and sexy, but this time sheʼs a bit more cheeky and mischievous. She loves to move and is always having a bop. Playing a god, is a great role that doesnʼt come along all the time. Are you quite a motherly person yourself? Iʼm the mother of my mates, but not in a maternal way as I donʼt have any kids. Where do your parents originate from and can you relate to any of the themes in the play from a personal perspective? My parents are from Morgan Forest, Clarendon in Jamaica. My dad was a carpenter and my mum a seamstress. My motherʼs father was a farmer in terms of livelihood and toiling the soil, these people work off the land and I remember watching dad so I can relate in that way. I thought you were brilliant in Mother Goose, where can we see you after Once On This Island? Iʼll be doing the Vagina Monologues again, touring Bromley and Hull which is a great joy. Iʼm not doing panto this year though, as Iʼll be joining the cast of Hairspray from October. How did you get into acting? When I was six, a lady called Ivy Travers from Clapton Pond and a friend were doing dance classes and I asked my mum if I could go along. I got the bug and loved it and did my first show in Bow Civic Centre. I feel blessed that I can pay my mortgage
lime-mag-design-am.indd 7
doing what I love to do. I havenʼt been to drama school. I went to Anna Scherʼs. Then it was more of a drama club than a drama school. Anna dealt with improvisation, she got kids to explore their emotions and how they react to people, which I love. You donʼt do a lot of that in the business. We did improvisation on Shakespeare and (Harold) Pinter. It was fun. A lot of Annaʼs students were raw, like Kathy Burke, Natalie Cassidy, Linda Robson. With acting I feel you learn on the job, you get a different challenge every time. Being in Holby was a wonderful eye opener. I worked with Robert Powell, one of Britainʼs greatest actors and Hugh Quarshie. Thereʼs a continual turn over of people, so itʼs a wonderful way of learning your craft. Do you still get nervous at auditions? I think everyone does, my mum always said what is for you is for you, six month down the line another job comes in. I never worry about jobs that I donʼt get. They were going to bring Dreamgirls over here but the Americans didnʼt want to. I was told they wanted me to play Essie. I thought ʻyes, the job is mineʼ. Then when I didnʼt get it I was really disappointed, but I understood why as the girl that got it was phenomenal. But then the show didnʼt happen they went into rehearsals, but the production didnʼt happen.
“Her strength as a black woman
with authority is dear to my heart as a black child who grew up in this country” What are your most treasured career highlights so far? I feel lucky because there are quite a few I can pull out the bag. Itʼs been a really good journey and itʼs not over yet. I think being in Nomad (I Wanna Give You Devotion), because we travelled the world. We were supporting Kylie at Wembley, and when we got on the stage, they didnʼt want us, then by the end of the performance they were shouting Nomad. Also, Holby, purely for the fact of how Lolaʼs been received. Her strength as a black woman with authority is dear to my heart as a black child growing up in this country when you didnʼt see a lot of black people on the television. I am still blown away by the positive reaction I get from people. What should people come and see Once on This Island? Itʼs a joyful, rousing, wonderful, Caribbean fairytale celebration for the summer. Youʼll leave the theatre feeling good. What does the D stand for? Iʼm not saying – itʼs that little bit of mystery about me. I use the ʻDʼ because when I was at school there were a couple of Sharon Clarkeʼs. When I started acting, I put in the initial so that my name would stand out. Once on this Island is at the Hackney Empire until 16 August, 2009. Published courtesy of www.afridiziak.com/theatrenews

THEATRE
Theatre review The Observer National Theatre Words: Femi Fola
Should western intervention into African politics, even if supposedly benign, be welcomed? This is the question posed by Matt Charmanʼs play, The Observer, set in a fictional African state during its first democratic elections. Anna Chancellor, as Fiona Russell-dedicated deputy from the election observation team-is faced with the dilemma of ensuring effective change in a job where impartiality is all-important. Believing she is to preside over an easy, and possibly fixed, victory for the corrupt incumbent president, Russell and her enthused interpreter Daniel Okeke (Chuk Iwuji) are surprised when victory is not won outright in the electionʼs first round. With the second round impending, Russell decides to enact a voter outreach scheme to get more people to the polls-mainly
in areas where the opposition is popular. Tense throughout, Charmanʼs piece introduces us to a range of figures invested in the election result, from the world-weary Foreign office representative Saunders (James Fleet), cynical BBC correspondent Declan (Lloyd Hutchinson) to the indigenous electoral committee increasingly annoyed by the bumptious observer busily traversing their country in aid of ʻenlightenedʼ democracy. But throughout the question remains whether western democracy is the best means of governance in Africa. Furthermore, in light of Russellʼs proactive politicking, whether the ends always justifies the means. While Chancellor admirably lends her character a frenetic and tireless determination, and with it personal isolation, Chuk Iwuji brilliantly realises a young man initially excited as a child
at Christmas but consequently troubled by the murkier details when election observation becomes competition. Impressing himself upon his scenes with great versatility is Cyril Nri, funnily so as a bar owner while discomfortingly so as an army chief. Ultimately, the production is sustained by director Richard Eyreʼs skill in not only giving every scene the feeling of high importance, but also vividly elucidating the ins and outs of a fledgling democracyʼs election in an exciting fashion. MICHELLE WILLIAMS THEATRE INTERVIEW WITH MICHELLE WILLIAMS AKA ROXY HART, CHICAGO
Words: Chloe Thomas
Michelle Williams is one of the most talented and successful performers of her generation. As one third of the Grammy award winning trio Destiny’s Child these wonder women sold over fifty million records worldwide and have often been described as the most celebrated girl band of all time. Following a series of successful hits on Broadway with roles in “Aida” and the “Colour purple” Ms Williams is in London and will “go into her dance” for the role of the sultry murderess and “scintillating sinner” Roxie Hart in Kander and Ebb’s musical, CHICAGO. With just one week before the curtain rises on her west end debut and yet another alter ego beams before the crowds, Afridiziak news decided it was time to meet the girl beneath the glitter. There’s been a lot of anticipation about your turn in CHICAGO how do you feel about performing on the west end stage? I am very excited about it. I have always wanted to perform in London on the west end stage and gain exposure in that way. How did you actually become involved in CHICAGO did the producers approach you? My agent got a call asking if I would like to play Roxie. I don’t know how they came to approach me maybe they knew I liked musicals so I went for the audition and got the part. How did you prepare for the complicated dance sequences that Roxie has? Well Dean Stuart is a really great choreographer and he got me going with the dances. It’s all through him really and I just practiced and went over things with him and that’s how it developed. You’re no stranger to musicals having starred on Broadway in Aida in 2003 and the Colour purple in 2007 are there any other roles that you would really like to do? I would like to originate a new role in a new musical or play. A brand new role maybe one that was written for me, that would be ideal. Before your involvement in Destiny’s Child you started out as a backing singing for R&B star Monica but where did you inherit you talent and desire to be a singer? It really came from my childhood. I come from quite a musical family and when I was growing up I spent a lot of time in church gospel choirs and we would tour and practice regularly so yeah that’s where it came from. What was it like being part of one third of the most groundbreaking girl band of the 21st century and performing all over the world? Oh my goodness that whole period of my life was like a whirlwind! We were working so hard in all these amazing cities like Paris and London but we never had time to enjoy it. Janet Jackson actually told us to calm down and enjoy ourselves because we were in danger of burning ourselves out. So yeah I look back on that time and I think to myself that it was amazing but in some ways we were so busy that we weren’t stopping to smell the roses - which is important. Speaking of Janet Jackson what are your thoughts on the tragic death of Michael? Oh you know it’s so sad, he was a role model we all looked up to and he was an inspiration to me from my childhood so I am really, really sad that he’s gone. We have lost someone very special. You and the girls rejoined to produce the album “Destiny Fulfilled” in 2004 with that fabulous song “Lose My Breath” do you think it’s possible that you could work together again? I think those days could be behind us now because we are all pursuing our own individual projects. But the fact that fans and people are still asking whether we are going to get back together after five years and they’re still talking about Destiny’s Child is amazing. And you and your fellow band mates Beyonce Knowles and Kelly Rowland were certainly a dazzling trio do you see each other regularly? We do see each other but not so regularly because of our busy schedules. Now I believe you are the first black person to play Roxie Hart in this country and I think you are a positive role model for young people. What message would you give to young black kids that wish to enter the performing arts? I would say go to see as much performance art as you can. Don’t just stop at the pop concerts, there’s lots of amazing opera and theatre, so many great artists and examples of great work to emulate and that’s where you can get your inspiration. So will any of your friends and family be flying here to see you in CHICAGO? Yes I can’t wait I am going to have a lot of friends and family coming out here. And finally what do you think of London? I love London, I am so happy here, I am staying in a great part of town and I am going to perform in a wonderful show! It’s fabulous. J2K GRIME’S COME BACK KID ROLLS DEEP Words: Michelle Adabra
Hailing from east London, J2K has created quite a name for himself in the underground scene. Renowned for his blazing mix tapes, the 26-year-old grime star has been creating ripples in the industry since 2003. The former Leyton Orient footballer is about to make his mark even deeper, with his new eight-track EP ‘Wake Up’ and the banging new single ‘Danger’. With both a solo and Roll Deep album in the pipeline, we caught up with the determined MC real name Jason Black - to talk about mainstream chart success, mix tapes and becoming the latest member of Roll Deep.
bring myself to do that. In your biography you make reference to starting the mix tape trend in grime. Can you explain? Obviously I didn’t start mix tapes, or the concept of mix tapes but in the scene where I was coming from it wasnít being done, I was the first person to do it. The avenues at the time were pirate radio and raves and I was coming up but not getting regular radio slots, so me and producer TNT just started making full songs aside from just writing 16s for the radio, thatís how the mix tape came out. We thought letís just put this altogether and package it, simple. Obviously the concept came from America but at the time in the scene, you would only have a CD out if you were signed or you might have a white label out. So I came to be known more for my mix tapes. What are your thoughts on the UK scene right now and is it fresh? It is fresh but at the same time there is too much of this
jumping on the bandwagon taking place. Do you think the ‘bandwagon effect’ is taking place because major labels are starting to take notice of homegrown ‘urban’ acts? Yeah to an extent also everybody is hungry right now. People saw the success of Wiley’s ‘Rolex’ and then there will be loads of Rolex’s after that. You can’t duplicate that success. Record labels often latch onto anything, they’ll just try to follow rather than create. Are you interested in mainstream success and being signed? Yeah of course I am! (laughs) I’m not one of those guys either. I’ve always said, as long as I’m comfortable I’m cool. I keep it real to myself and that’s all you can do but people understand what I do and that’s the general feeling I get from the people who listen to my music.

Tell me about your new EP Wake Up. It is an eight track EP and it’s out now. It’s unique as it’s coming out on the micro SD card, my thinking behind that was I see a lot of people listening to music via their phones, so I thought I could make a product like that. I’ve made videos for virtually every track on the EP, so you can see them on the SD card too. What kind of sound can we expect from the EP? I did it while I was doing the Roll Deep album. It’s what I like to call ‘relative music’, meaning it’s music people can relate to. It’s never just pointless music, there are themes. You have your hype tracks on there, like the first single ‘Danger’, which is about trying not to let a girl get the best of you. I have tracks about getting away from everything, there are tracks that address various social issues and I’m just having fun with it really. It’s just the EP, so I’m not getting real deep on it, that ís for the album which is coming very soon. The album will have a grime element to it, in terms of the sound and edge but it’s also quite varied. The album’s called ‘Old Enough to Know Better’, ‘Young Enough Not to Give A ****’. This is exactly where I feel I’m at right now. The older you get, the more you have to re-evaluate things and it’s not that you’re getting boring,
youíre just growing Would you consider yourself a grime artist? Yeah I would but I do like to experiment. I feel that with grime, youíre allowed to bring other musical elements to it. What people usually do is come from the grime scene and turn around and say ëIím not grime anymore, Iím an artistí. I do understand that concept but some people are not artists, they literally stand on the spot and just spit bars ñ thatís not that artistic. Iím saying yes, I do come from that but I also do other stuff. Iím into the performance element, I like to experiment. I just like to keep it fresh whatever the sound is. grime is fresh. Itís some of the freshest music in the world to me. Itís not like American hip hop and r&b - which at the moment is dying. Iím not saying I donít like hip hop and r&b but itís not fresh right now, thereís nothing new; whereas Grime is always evolving. Were you tempted to follow in the dance/electro footsteps of some of your fellow grime contemporaries? I donít knock people who do whatever they have to do but I donít like to jump on a bandwagon just for the sake of it. If I was to do that it would have to be a track or beat I was feeling at that particular time. What tends to happen a lot is, when you go to these producers for a ëcrossoverí beat theyíll give you a similar beat to someone else. Why would I want to do that? I just canít
At the end of the day, you are the person who makes the music and how can you not like your music? You’re the newest member to grime collective Roll Deep. How did that come about? Well I’ve known them for years and we’ve always done tunes together. I’ve always been affiliated with them even when I wasn’t part of the group. I was about to start the ‘Wake Up’ EP and I went to their studio to get some beats, where they were working on the next Roll Deep album, so it just kind of happened naturally. I’ve always had a lot of respect for Roll Deep and the album is going to be serious.
Wake Up EP is out now. www.myspace.com/officialj2ksite

Hanif Kureishiʼs latest page to stage adaptation, The Black Album is sadly a case of donʼt believe the hype. Originally an acclaimed book by the author of My Beautiful Launderette and the The Buddha of Suburbia, The Black Album has all the intentions of a great play but it moves way to fast and is drowning with too much activity especially if you havenʼt read the book. Directed by Jatinder Verma, this National Theatre and Tara Arts productions is a story of the rise of British Muslim fundamentalism under Thatcherʼs rule. Set in 1989, the year of fatwa, the plot centres around the main character, Shahid (Jonathan Bonnic). Fresh from Kent, Shahid arrives in London full of enthusiasm and naivety as a student with a passion for Prince and desire to write. He and his lecturer, Deedee Osgood (Tanya Franks), share a passion for pint-sized singer, Prince, and fall in love and lust, seemingly overnight. Amidst the love-affair there are various sub-plots the audience have to grapple with against
a back drop of special effects and an acid-house backdrop. Shahidʼs purple clad brother, Chilli, who embraces all things Thatcher causes havoc whenever he knocks on Shahidʼs door, having left his wife for the high life. Then thereʼs the group of Muslim radicals, with Riaz al Hussain (Alexander Andreou) at the helm, there trying to keep Shahid on the straight and religious narrow. One of the few stand-out moments is the burning of Salman Rushdieʼs book, The Satanic Verses. Although, not the greatest production of the year, it does have its funny moments. The Black Album is at the Cottesloe Theatre until 7 October, 2009 and will also go on a UK tour: West Yorkshire Playhouse, Leeds (w/c 20 October), Liverpool Playhouse (w/c 27 October), Oxford Playhouse (w/c 10 November), Warwick Arts Centre (w/c 17 November) and Bath Theatre Royal (w/c 23 November). KELE LE ROC THE NEW LOOK: ROC’IN THE ETHNIC TREND Words: Zekra Rahman
Asian fashion has inspired celebrities around the world and the latest to embrace the ethnic trend is British soul sensation Kele Le Roc. In between working on her forthcoming album, Le Roc Music, and promoting her latest single Retro, she has been busy rekindling her childhood passion for fashion. Now, she is launching her very own couture fashion line, Le Roc Fashion, which comprises of two ranges - a funky and fresh club-wear collection for the younger market and an ethnic-inspired range which is made entirely using Indian sari fabric. We found out more about her clothing range, love for Asian fashion and her biggest shopping vices. How did you first get interested in Asian fashion? It was always around me as I grew up in Upton Park in East London. It was something that I liked and brought into my own fashion sense. Nowadays everyone wears diamante shoes, but back in the day, Green Street was where you would get your shoes from. I love the bangles, the earrings, the hair extensions and glittery tattoos - if there’s anything shiny and with beads, I’m attracted to it. Tell us about your designs? Many of my designs have a lot of hand work like embroidery and sequins, which is quite time consuming. The beautiful thing about saris is that you can transform them into your own style, so even though my dresses use sari fabrics, they take on another form. Where can we buy them and are the prices affordable? It will be available to buy on the Kele Le Roc shop, online only, and I might put a couple of pieces into a few stores. The clubwear starts from £100, the tops start from £70, and all the Indian stuff is from about £200. I don’t want prices to be too high because I want them to be accessible but I need to take into consideration all the handiwork. Describe your personal style? I have so many different vibes that I like to dress in. If you see my new music video, it’s a perfect example of that. I go through the 70s look with afro flairs and then I’m a rock chick with black leather boots.
How does what you do influence how you dress? I am an entertainer, so I like to stand out, I like to be noticed. I think how you wear your make-up, how you do your hair and the clothes you wear go hand in hand with what you do.
What’s your tip to finding the best high street buys? Walk up and down and bargain a little bit. Take Green Street, you can find the same sari in different shops and then bargain for the best deal, so don’t be afraid to try it.
Is your style on stage different to your everyday style? On stage, I am a little bit more flamboyant. But to be honest, no, because I think I do have that flamboyancy about me. The only time I would really dress down is if I’m just chillin’.
What do you always buy on the high street? I am a sucker for earrings that are shiny and blinging. I like denim as well. It doesn’t matter how much denim you have, it gets reinvented every year. I have about three pairs of those tight jeans that are like leggings. And I have got a denim cat suit that I bought in America.
Who is your style icon? My mum because she has her own style and could make her own clothes. I don’t copy her dress sense but she is unique and original. That’s where my thing for making my own clothes came from - I like to be different and wear something no one else is going to have. What look are you loving this season? I love the 1980s thing that’s come back, and I love how women’s clothes are really feminine now. For a long time it wasn’t really, with a lot of tight jeans, but now I love all the flowing dresses and long skirts.
How do you personalise a high street look? I might buy a long skirt from Primark and then tie it up or add something to it. Try to avoid buying really bright colours because if it’s a really good design, chances are people are going to buy that. What are your tips for changing a day look into a night look? Do your make-up a little bit more. I have day earrings that I wear all the time and then I add an armful of Indian bangles for the evening. Wear silver or gold bling depending on your outfit and accessorise with a bag and a belt.
“is The beautiful thing about saris is that that you can transform them into your own style” Retro taken from the forthcoming album Le Roc Music is out now. For more information on the Kele Le Roc shop visit www.keleleroc.com

EVENTS Preview of the month
Carnival Splash launch preview tourist boards and Carnival Village. Over the years much has been written about the Notting Hill Carnival, but rarely is there any mention of the ʻunsung heroesʼ, the individuals from Mas (Masquerade) Bands who for six to eight months of the year, set up Mas Camps and create, design and produce the spectacular costumes which are paraded over the carnival weekend. The camps take place all over London and these individuals work collectively well into the night. As many of these costumes are too heavy to be worn for the duration of the Carnival route, the Costume Splash is an opportunity for them to be displayed in their full glory to the public. Carnival Splash is a dynamic precarnival event which demonstrates the art of Mas bands and costume-making and provides two days of vibrant, carnival celebrations fusing costume, calypso, pan, Caribbean cuisine and an arts and craft market. The drama and intrigue make it a back seat to none, not event the classic ʻThe Harder They Comeʼ. Jamaican Gleaner. A cautionary tale about friendship, greed and redemption, Bashment addresses the many complexities and pitfalls that Jamaican and Caribbean immigrants face on the quest for that all too often allusive ʻAmerican Dreamʼ. When Cymbal (Mykal Fax) and his friends, Job (Steve McAlpin), Tubby (Shawn Cummings) and Rupert (Narada Campbell) linkup with Son-Son (Nohard Grant) an incorrigible bad boy who believes that choice is an illusion, and that the gun is the only thing that matters, they find themselves dealing with more drama than they are willing to take on.

Colour your life and change a child’s life for ever! BAAF Adoption & Fostering is a UK charity that exists to find loving families for children who cannot live safely at home. We have helped find families for thousands of children over the past 30 years and need your help to do more.
T
here are 80,000 children living in care. 25% have been there for more than five years and 4,000 are waiting to be adopted every year. 50% of children in care are there because they have been physically or emotionally abused by their birth family. Every day these children live with uncertainty about their future. All of them urgently need a loving, caring family and BAAF helps find families for some of the most vulnerable children in the country.
children in care we must raise £250,000 every year. You can help us do this by taking part in one of our exciting overseas challenges – every penny of your sponsorship money will go towards our life changing work. In return for raising agreed sponsorship you can spend an amazing time in a fantastic destination of your choice, trekking or cycling for BAAF. We have a wide selection of overseas challenges in the coming months, including cycling in Cuba and trekking the Inca Trail…
The children that we find families for are often ʻolderʼ – in some cases just five years old is seen as too old to be adopted! There are groups of brothers and sisters who desperately need to stay together and many disabled children are never found a new adoptive family because many new parents may think they are too challenging to care for. There is a disproportionate number of black and minority ethnic children in care and, as a result of this, many of these children wait longer than they should for a new family. Many children will sadly never be adopted and will be in care until they are just 16 or 18, never knowing the love and security of a family that those of us who have been fortunate enough to experience may take for granted. We are working hard to ensure that we find as many families as possible for children so that they too can have the best possible chances in life.
Perhaps you fancy spending your Easter holiday abroad next year? Then head to Cuba to cycle along stunning coastal roads and look forward to enjoying the sites of Havana and relaxing in the beautiful Caribbean sea at the end of your epic ride.
In order to continue finding loving permanent families for
Or if youʼd rather dust off your walking boots you could be trekking the Inca Trail next summer, making your dreams come true by watching the sun rise at Machu Picchu and exploring one of the worldʼs most fascinating and important archaeological finds! Itʼs an amazing chance to see one of the new Seven Wonders of the World. For more information about BAAF or to find out about signing up for the adventure of a lifetime please call Daisy on 020 7421 2630, email fundraising@baaf.org.uk or visit www.baaf.org.uk. COMMUNITY
The Sickle Cell Society The Sickle Cell Society was first set up as a registered charity in 1979. It was formed by a group of patients, parents and health professionals who were all concerned about the lack of understanding and inadequacy of treatment with sickle cell disorders The Society’s mission is to enable and assist individuals with a sickle cell disorder to realise their full economic and social potential. This is achieved by improving opportunities for sickle cell affected individuals and families by raising public awareness through education, advocacy together with the provision of direct welfare services, assisting in research and lobbying. There are 250,000 people in the UK who are carriers of the sickle cell gene and up to 13,500 people have a sickle cell disorder - making it the most common inherited blood disorder in the country. About 350 babies are diagnosed with the disease every year. Sickle cell is a disorder of the haemoglobin in the red blood cells. There are over 300 different types of haemoglobin. Haemoglobin is the substance in red blood cells that is responsible for the colour of the cell and for carrying oxygen around the body. People with sickle cell disorder are born with the condition. It is not contagious and can only be inherited from both parents. The main symptoms of sickle cell disorder are anaemia and severe pain. The pain occurs when the cells change shape after oxygen has been released. The red blood cells then, stick together, causing blockages in the small blood vessels. These painful episodes are referred to as sickle cell crisis. They can last for a few hours, a couple of days or up to a couple of weeks. Sickle cell sufferers are often admitted to hospital when they have a crisis. They are given strong painkillers such as pethadine and morphine to control the pain. Over time sickle cell sufferers can experience damage to internal organs such as the liver, kidney, lungs, heart and spleen.
lime-mag-design-am.indd 37
Due to organ damage life expectancy of people with sickle cell disorders is mid-40s, although with modern treatments patients can survive into their 50s. Sadly death can also result from complications of the disorder. June 19th of each year has now been declared as World Sickle Cell Day by the United Nations. The declaration of this global day of awareness came about on 22 December 2008 when the United Nations General Assembly adopted Resolution A/63/L63 that recognizes sickle cell disease as a public health problem. Among the objectives of this resolution was in particular the celebration on 19th June of each year a World Day of sickle cell disease devoted to awareness campaigns at national and international levels. The Sickle Cell Society commemorated the first ever World Sickle Cell Day in London with a reception at the County Hall on 17 June.
