YOUR FREE GUIDE To our Islands’ Happenings

Now in its 23rd Year! Aug 18 - 24, 2011 Vol.23, No.48

Anything that Floats Except a Boat Race! Sunday, August 21st ALSO THIS WEEK: 70s Disco Party @ Drakes Point • Adikshun Band @ Village Cay • Last Resort Closing Party

This Week’s Feature Story

The Beat Goes On At Myett’s It’s that time of year again when most of our favorite restaurants are taking a well-earned break, and parties seem like a thing of the past. Residents flee the islands to escape the heat and the threat of hurricanes – leaving those of us left wondering what on earth can we do to stay entertained during this dry spell? Well, all is not lost as live entertainment is on the bill at Myett’s several nights a week and the talented artists, all from the BVI, are staples of the local music scene. Eric Christian plays his gospel inspired music during happy hour every Tuesday night and he developed his love for music very early on. Highlights of his career include opening for well-known gospel recording artists such as Andre Crouch, James Cleveland and Edwin Hawkins. He also wrote music for Tony Brown’s movie, The White Girl. Entertaining the crowd during happy hour on Fridays is Awesome Crew, with their foot tapping calypso sounds that are guaranteed to get everyone in the mood for the weekend. This popular band has played the circuit for many years and their biggest hit is a song by the name of Bugs that went to the top of the charts in Tortola and also claimed high praises in neighboring islands.

Candy Man DJ, and one-man band plays to the happy hour crowd on “Mexican Margarita Mondays.” This crowd pleaser plays the guitar and sings a variety of songs from reggae to country. When asked his favorite type of music he said, “I like to play the music that I can see the crowd are getting a kick out of.” He added that crowd favorites include Gambler by Kenny Rogers, Bob Marley’s classic Don’t Worry and Shaggy’s hit song Angel. So head down to the north shore to enjoy the live entertainment on offer, relax with an ice cold cocktail in hand and stay cool throughout the long hot summer. Enjoy! — Jan Critchley

Ask Koren Your personal E-therapist, is in the house!

Too Many Babies do not have children alone, not usually anyway. So the fathers for these children should have some role in their lives. Lack of information on birth control methods could be the cause of many women becoming pregnant young and continuing the cycle even after the first mistake. Knowledge and education are the keys to empowerment for our women to understand that while children are a blessing, it is not a good thing to bring them into this world for them to live a sub-standard life and be the ones who pay for our mistakes. People are very keen on their rights and their choices and I’m not sure many women will take too kindly to you questioning the amount of pregnancies they have had, unless you are very close to them. If your community has the forum for it, you can ask someone to do some empowerment talks, so that these young mothers can realize that they have choices and know when to draw the line to behaviours that could cause them and their offspring a lot of problems going forward.

Dear Koren, Why are young women having three and four children when we are living in so much hard times? Close to where I live, there are at least 3 women under 30 who have 3 or 4 children each and they can hardly take care of them. What is the best solution for this problem? –– Confused Dear Confused, There could be many reasons why young women are having many children. If times are hard like you say, that means less money for entertainment and socializing, so what do people stay home and do? Take a wild guess – something enjoyable and inexpensive. Then we have those persons who are very dependent on relationships. They cannot see themselves alone, so when one relationship is finished, they start another one and they keep having children with the men, hoping each time that he will be the one that stays. Some women even pretend they are on birth-control but secretly want to become pregnant as a means of entrapping the man. Other women are just very fertile and easily become pregnant. Having children can be a wonderful thing, but only if one is financially and emotionally prepared and if there is a support system to help you with raising them. Women

video views Hamilton’s youth group leader. Underwood’s role is small and her acting abilities may not be as impressive as her singing skills, but the audience will be pleased to know, Underwood’s character is also a member of the church choir. AnnaSophia Robb Charlie and the Chocolate Factory plays Hamilton. The young star portrays Hamilton excellently and offers up strong emotions with just a touch of insecurities. Soul Surfer serves up some great surfing scenes and the real Hamilton performed many of the stunts. Overall, the film is a dramatic tale that doesn’t sugarcoat Hamilton’s injury. Hamilton’s attitude and gusto for life are inspiring. While the film can be slightly artificial at times, Director Sean McNamara does a nice job of tying the storyline together. The all-star cast gives the film a boost in sincerity and makes for an overall enjoyable experience.

Soul Surfer Bethany Hamilton was a 13-year old surfing sensation, taking the surfing world by storm and garnering sponsors from big-name surf companies. Her career looked more than promising and the young wahine never turned down a surf session. Things changed for Hamilton one Halloween morning, when a tiger shark attacked her. Thanks to the vigilante help of her fellow surfers, Hamilton lost her left arm, but survived the attack. With the guidance of her loving family, Hamilton didn’t give up on her dreams of surfing. Based on a true story, Soul Surfer is a tale of courage, strength and drive. Academy award winner Helen Hunt As Good As It Gets and Dennis Quaid The Parent Trap star as Hamilton’s parents. The duo is perfectly suited for their roles and Quaid in particular looks life a wannabe beach bum. American Idol winner Carrie Underwood also makes an appearance as

Who’s The Winner? Over the August Emancipation festivities some friends and I attended the Miss BVI Pageant to watch the five young ladies compete for the crown. Going into the show there were some clear favorites amongst the crowd and the stage was set for the ‘Royal Affair’ themed event. There was no shortage of glitz and glamour that night. My friends and I were all set for an evening of entertainment full of laughs and surprises and we got both. After the first segment there was a clear front-runner or so it seemed and as the competition carried on she continued to outshine the other contestants. She impressed not only the crowd but the judges also, and she came away with the most trophies that night having won all but two segments of the pageant. Everyone sat on pins and needles to hear the winner announced, even though everyone thought the winner was pretty obvious after the evenings performances. Well boy were we wrong! As they announced the winner the entire room seemed to go quiet in the same instant. Some people even thought that the announcer had made a mistake. Who’s the winner? Are we being punked? Everyone stood in awe wondering what had just transpired. Had the judges seen the same show we did? Well it seemed there was no mistake and the rightful winner now wears the crown. However, if you had been in attendance the night of the show and are not familiar with the pageant world then you would be asking the same question. How could she not win? She was the best that night, but the show is not only judged on Limin’ Times Entertainment Guide

that nights performance. It also takes into account the segments that the crowd are not able to witness and yet these scores are part of the final result. This is where things get a little tricky, I do understand the calculations as it was explained to me but I do feel cheated as many others did that night. We were not privy to the score of the contestants beforehand so we had no idea of knowing what scores they had individually accumulated before the big night. I personally would like to know that information, so that I may be able to make my own assessment on the night of the show. Maybe giving a ranking of the girls before the pageant would be useful in future.

‘Pioneer Woman’ Settles On The Frontier Of Food Network Though Drummond wasn’t exactly a farmhand, she did grow up in Oklahoma, so it isn’t as if she were seeing cattle for the first time. She fell into writing yet doesn’t characterize herself as a writer. She was a prolific letter writer, and blogging was a natural offshoot. Drummond enjoyed taking pictures, so she took a photography class, then taught herself more. Her blog is pure fun. She has the breezy voice of a girlfriend and the confidence of someone who knows what she’s doing. And she credits others whose work she references. Though Drummond seems nervous in the pilot, it makes her more endearing. This isn’t a Hollywood starlet scared because she took a Broadway role she wasn’t ready for. This is a mom, a wife, a blogger and photographer who happens to make traditional American food and seems a little self-conscious of the camera, which is fine. Her food is not for calorie counters. She loves half-and-half, butter and sugar. Drummond’s authenticity, palpable on the show and in the blog, is obvious during a conversation. “I am not sure a TV show was the next step,” she says. “It was all about the blogging and photographing. I didn’t want to be something I wasn’t, and I’m not trying to be the next ‘Food Network Star’ or anything. They (fans) could sense that I was not trying to be anything I am not. It’s about our life on the ranch and how food fits into it. “It’s not about fine dining,” she says. “When you are working 500 cattle a day, it is about refueling and the comfort of food. My food is very simple, very accessible. The ingredients can be found almost anywhere because that is my plight.” – Jacqueline Cutler

Ree Drummond is one of those talented and lucky people whose passions help her create a terrific life, and by her own admission, an accidental one. She’s married to a cowboy she calls the Marlboro Man, and they have four healthy, beautiful children she home-schools on their Oklahoma ranch. She’s a photographer and home chef, which she features in her blog, thepioneerwoman.com. That blog and her best-selling cookbook led to Food Network’s The Pioneer Woman, premiering Saturday, Aug. 27. “I learned to cook because I love to eat,” she says. “Cooking was a means to an end. My mother was a very, very good cook. I was interested in cooking, not sewing and craft.” In the pilot, Drummond makes chicken-fried steak and mashed potatoes with cream cheese and butter. She’s feeding her husband of 15 years, their children ages 7 to 14 and a ranch hand. Though Drummond, 42, works hard at all she does, her success and how this life came about were not what she had planned. She calls herself an accidental country girl. “I grew up on a golf course and was the last person anyone could imagine living in the country,” she says. “I went to school in California; I lived in L.A. When my friends got wind of the fact that I was planning to marry a rancher and move to the country, my friends cleaned out their ears.” 17

Ahh…The Changing Of The Guard Carousel Goodbye Mega Mix. Adios Young Gunners. Thanks for participating in the 2011 BVI Basketball Federation Kenny “Funny” Thomas league and showcasing your players. Basketball will shortly crown new (old) champs after Mega Mix - the team expected to contend for the Sr. Division title - forfeited their second game against rivals East on Saturday night, after losing the opener, 91-68. With a depleted squad as some players went off to school and others to resume contracts in professional leagues, they could not find five bodies to suit up. As a result, it brings to an end, Coach Verne “Bego” Turnbull’s string of four straight championship victories, after leading East to a three-peat before relaunching Mega Mix. Jr. Division champs Young Gunners too have been ousted, following an 82-80 loss to 2009 champs Another Level, who will now face the Hawks after they expelled Fearless, 101-81 in a deciding game three on Sunday night. With the elimination of an intermediate division that was introduced in 2007, three of the four teams playing in the Sr. and Jr. championships have already been to the top of the pile. Legs - formerly Young Legs - earned their right to the title series after Against Da Odds, perhaps figuring they would be trashed in game two after being whipped in the opener, failed to show. They get yet another crack at East—who denied them the 2007 title and went on to three-peat after Young Legs led 2-0, but lost the next three for a reverse sweep.

The Hawks are making their first Basketball Championships final

With the exception of the 2003 and 2004 seasons when there was no league during the construction of the Multipurpose Sports Complex, Young Legs and East have combined to win eight of the last Sr. division crowns, with Young Legs coming out winners in 2001, 2002, 2005 and 2006. East’s string ran from 2007, 2008 and 2009. Now, Legs - with some of the players who last tasted the title five years ago on the squad - are ready for the challenge after running through the 2011 league unbeaten. East too, have some of their players from the 2009 titlist squad on their roster. But, who is hungrier? Who really wants it most? Will it be five rings for Legs or four for East? Another Level will be trying to add their second Jr. Division title in three seasons and will face new comers Hawks, who needed all of three games to finally fend off Fearless, 101-81 on Sunday night for their first trip to the big dance. Both series began on Wednesday night, with games continuing on Friday and Sunday, to see who will get the coveted rings and the bragging rights that come with it for the next year. 19
