World Poetry Day In 1999, UNESCO declared World Poetry Day on March 21st. The day is all about encouraging people to read, write, teach and publish poetry and also recognizes the great cultural contribution poetry makes to human society. The BVI National Commission for UNESCO will be observing World Poetry Day on Saturday and will be hosting a poetry competition. Under the theme “Celebrating the forefathers of our nation who set the path for 70 years of Legislation”, the poetry competition is just one of the scheduled activities that will be held. The Poetry competition guidelines are as follows: Commencement date is on Saturday and the deadline is on Tuesday, March 31st. The theme as mentioned above is Celebrating the forefathers of our nation who set the path for 70 years of Legislation and is open to categories ages 5–7, 8–10, 11–13, 14–17 and adults. All poems should be emailed to aflax-archer@gov.vg and prizes will be won in each category.

Only In The Dark There is a quote attributed to Martin Luther King, Jr. that says “only in the dark can you see the stars”. Physically, when you are in the dark, the stars appear so much more brilliant and twinkly than trying to view them from in the light; and when beheld in all their glory, they are a wonderful sight and truly beautiful. The world is going through a dark time right now with everyone being concerned about the COVID19. People are dying, many others are ill, the world economy seems to be crashing, countries have locked their borders, travel is affected and some are stockpiling food. It’s terrible and the predictions are that it will get worse before it gets better. What stars can we see in this period of darkness? First and foremost, we know that our mind is where it all starts. Our perspective and thoughts on something impacts the way we see it. While we all no doubt see the current situation as largely negative, it would be helpful, if we were to see what positive we can find: • Families spending time together. Social distancing means that we will be at home more and we can get to do more family activities with our loved ones, even if we have overlooked this in the past. • Reevaluation of priorities. Now that we have to choose what is important and decide where we 11
want to go and what we want to do, we can hone in on what our priorities are. • Saving money. Less traveling and going out for social events, means less spending and that money will come in handy for a future time. • Education. Many of us are learning things about the body and the world and healthcare that we never even knew before. We can even go further and take a free online class as we have more indoor time. • Hygiene. There is so much of a focus on practicing proper hygiene, like hand washing, wiping things down, using hand sanitizer, etc. these are all good practices that should be lasting. • Self-care. This is a great opportunity to practice meditation, deep breathing and other calming techniques that will curb our natural anxiety and fear. So let’s stay focused, try really hard to be positive and remember that in these times when we can’t control what’s happening around the world, we can try to control how we respond and we can do that by staying informed, staying calm and being as safe as we possibly can. ................................................................................. Devious Minds Chapter 21
“How dare you?” Diana, answered her phone when she saw it was her mother calling. “Excuse me, who are you talking to like that?” her mother Beverly asked after she recovered from the startling way in which Diana had answered her call. “You mom! As a matter of fact, don’t leave home, I’m coming to you now,” she responded. Diana ended the call without even giving her mother a chance to reply. Never bothering to change her short pants she grabbed her purse and headed out the door straight to the bus stop and headed over to her parents house. She was truly tired of her mother’s sh!t and was going to tell her how she felt once and for all. Once she arrived, she found her mother in the family sitting room with the devil himself, Thomas. “Great the two of y’all are here plotting but after I’m done saying what I have to I won’t be saying it again and I mean it,” she shouted. “Diana!” Her father called out to her from his study as his door was opened. As she walked in his study, her father instructed her to close the door. “Now baby girl, I know how your mother is but don’t disrespect her. After the Limin’Times Entertainment Guide
way I heard you talk and seeing Thomas, I’ve now figured out what has gotten you so angry but don’t let their doing defile your behavior towards them,” David said. “Yes daddy, can I go and get this over with?” she asked him as they walked towards the door without awaiting his response. She left the door opened as per his request. Walking into the sitting room and sitting across from her mother and Thomas she began to speak again, “Thomas, I’m only going to say this once and I will never say it again and when I’m done can you please leave so I can have a private discussion with my mother,” Diana told him and then continued “not now or ever have I had any interest in you. I don’t like you nor can I tolerate you. I never invited you to my job or my residence and you had no right to show up there. My mother giving you my details was not an invitation from me. Please refrain from trying to get close to me.” Thomas sat staring at Diana for what seemed like forever before getting up and walking out of her parent’s home. During that time, it was if as time had stopped, because you could even hear a pin drop and everyone froze. 12
“How dare you come to my house and throw out my guest,” Diana’s mother stated more than asked. As she continued rabbling on about how Thomas was a great guy and how she should give him a chance unlike the last hoodlum she brought around, Diana tuned her out until she didn’t want to be bothered anymore and stood up. Her mom, told her to sit back down. Glaring at her mother and not noticing that her father was at his study door, she got up again and refused to be pushed around. She turned to her mother and said, “Mother, I love and respect you but under no circumstances do you have a right to choose a partner for me. I made it clear from the dinner night, that I still don’t fancy Thomas and you disrespected me by giving him my location details. Thomas come sashaying back in town after all these years. You nor I know anything about him and you sent him to my home. I will under no circumstances allow you to interfere with my personal life again so I suggest you understand me loud and clear, goodbye.” With all that being said, Diana walked out her parent’s home without even saying bye to her father. Whiles sitting on the bus she got a text from her father saying, “calm down princess, lets do lunch tomorrow, just you and I.” “Thanks dad was her reply before she put on her headphones and tuned out her surroundings.

Back at her parents’ home her mother was so struck on the way her quietest child spoke to her that she never even flinched when her husband sat on the couch next to her. Trying to hold in his laugh, he rubbed his wife’s back and told her “that should teach you to mind your business….” It’s been days since Diana had seen or spoken to her mother. It was because of her siblings and father that she knew that Beverly was doing well but she believed that her mother had crossed the line and needed to be the one to break the ice. She was now at work at her desk working on a presentation for a new makeup line. Her job was to come up with a few ideas to present to her boss before they took it to the team. After a few hours of brainstorming, she was satisfied with her findings and began to work on the presentation for her boss, she wsll leave it on her desk at the end of the day. “Don’t forget to email me a copy of your ideas too before you leave,” Mrs. Brown, Diana’s boss said to her on the way through the door. “Sometimes that woman irks my soul,” Diana thought to herself. With her boss not stopping to hear her reply, she never even bothered responding to her. It was now 7pm and her task was done. There were three other employees working late also. She said her goodbyes to them and headed out the door.

Volunteers From 17 Nations Restore Softball Park Ariel Recovery Group volunteers have restored the E. Walwyn Brewley Softball Park, just in time to bring the sport back to life for its season opening. “This group has been so helpful and I thank God for them everyday,” BVI Softball Association President Terry “Chino” Chinnery stated. “Britnie (Turner) has been awesome. She’s a girl that gets things done. She’s just aggressive. She doesn’t take no for an answer and she’s just plugging away day after day, always at it.” Chinnery said volunteers from the 17 nations were always asking what else they could do. They have constructed the bleachers, painted, helped with light fixtures, threw away debris, retrofitted the bathrooms. He thanked former association president Hon. Neville “Sheep” Smith who introduced Turner to him. Chinnery said Smith has been checking on the progress and ensuring that things are done right and anything needed, he has access to him. “I commend him for what he has done also, because without him it would have not been possible,” Chinnery said. “And I also commend Yellow (Roy Garroway) of Quality Construction, he’s been there morning, noon and night. He’s always on site and makes sure the guys do what they have to do. So I just want to thank him so much for what he has done for Softball and just being there for us.” If Ariel Recovery Group didn’t step in, Chinnery said they would have to rescheduled the March 21
season opener and thanked Smith and Turner for making it happen. Turner who’s no stranger to the BVI, said her group has done about 20 projects here since Irma, everything from cleaning up to re-roofing homes, rebuilding farms to helping getting schools back online. “We’re really excited about this ballpark because even after our first day of being here, we’ve seen the entire community coming out and just hugging us, thanking us and jumping in themselves,” Turner said. “This has been a really cool experience for me because of bringing in volunteers from 17 different nations to be part of the continued recovery. This came from the Premier. I told him that I have people who want to be part of the recovery and he gave us this project and Hon Smith has been absolutely amazing in making sure that we’ve got what we needed. This new administration has just been lovely to work with. Very easy to allow good things to happen so that the country can move forward.” Ariel Recovery Group started working on Tuesday and by Friday had the bulk of the work done along with local volunteers. Turner said Quality Construction has brought electricians, they’ve rebuilt the fence and are doing a lot of the hard things volunteers don’t have the capacity to do.
