All About Eve

If you haven’t attended any of the plays yet, you still have time as there are three shows left in the BVI Theatre Series. All About Eve plays this Saturday at 7pm at the HLSCC Auditorium. Tickets are $15 ($20 at the door, $10 Students and HLSCC Staff and can be purchased from house, Lady Sarah’s Farms and Island Roots. All About Eve is a great play from West End, London. It tells the story of Margo Channing (Gillian Anderson). The spotlight is hers, always has been. It’s also about Eve (Lily James), Eve is her biggest fan – young beautiful golden girl and the girl next door.

Lime ... “to hang around idly” or “to go out on the town.” Source: The Dictionary of Virgin Islands English Creole by the late educator and historian Lito Valls. The Limin’ Times brings you all the news about when and where to “lime” in the British Virgin Islands. Limin’Times Entertainment Guide

Adapted by Ivo van Hove from the 1950 Twentieth Century Fox film by Joseph L Mankiewicz and the play “The Wisdom of Eve” by Mary Orr. Ivo van Hove directs this new stage version with set and lighting design from Jan Versweyveld, costume design by An D’Huys and music from double Mercury Prize-winner PJ Harvey, alongside Tom Gibbons’ sound design. Casting is by Julia Horan CDG. Lifting the curtain on a world of jealousy and ambition, this new production, from one of the world’s most innovative theatre directors, asks why our fascination with celebrity, youth and identity never seems to get old.

The Art of Being a Lion In 2020, it’s hard to survive if you only know how to purr like a kitten. That’s perfect for when you are with children or loved ones at home. However, to survive in the outside world, sometimes you need a roar. The roar does not have to be intimidating or aggressive, but rather a sound of confidence. How do you build your self-confidence so that you can be the Lion you were meant to be, at the right time? 1. Acknowledge your strengths and weaknesses. If you can be clear on what you are good at and boost those strengths, it will help you to feel so good about yourself. By the same token, acknowledge what you need to improve and make a plan to work on it. 2. Work towards greatness. Learn as much as you can and develop yourself. Competence brings confidence and self-development means you can stand with the giants and feel comfortable. 3. Surround yourself with people you admire and who you can emulate. You can’t be an effective lion if you only hang out with cats because you will soon find yourself behaving like the cats. Spend time around other lions, meaning persons who you consider to be strong, courageous and hopefully, you will learn from them. 4. Be prepared as much as possible. It’s good to arm yourself with a bag of tools that can help you in almost any situation. Whether you are going to an interview, traveling, going to ask for a raise or asking a lady out, be prepared. Dress for what you are aiming for, practice in front of the mirror and anticipate 11

what could go wrong and prepare yourself for it. 5. Take care of yourself. It’s difficult to feel confident if you are not doing the best you can for yourself or if you feel sluggish or lazy. Take care of your body, mind and spirit and that harmony will certainly improve your sense of wellbeing. 6. Develop survival skills. A lion does not run every time he senses danger; in fact, other creatures retreat from the lion. In the same manner, learn to stand up to adversity, challenges and obstacles by developing great and persistence. Confidence is not the absence of fear or hesitation, it is moving forward in spite of it. It starts on the inside with your perception of yourself and doing your part to ensure that how you feel on the inside is reflected on the outside. It has to do with your thoughts, your words, your behavior and your associations. For some of us, self-confidence comes naturally because we were raised to believe that we were all that and a bag of chips. For others, we might have been belittled or always been the outcast and it takes a bit more work to realize we have as much right to space as everyone else. Don’t give up on yourself. Practice often the art of being a lion…the way you carry yourself, the way you speak and in so doing, you can help others to follow that same path. ................................................................................. Devious Minds Chapter 20

It’s been weeks since Destiny left her job. Today she was running errands and trying to get things in order to open her business. While she was building her credentials to open her own academy in the future she decided for now, she planned to open a complex for children in the next few months. The complex would include a children’s spa where they could go to get pampered, after school programs as well as an arcade. She wanted to create a safe environment for children. Destiny loved children and prayed for the day she would be blessed with at least two of her own. Her educational background, her experience with one of the top academies and her savings account saw her approval for the trade license being granted within three weeks. So far, she had already made the down payment for the building, had her license to operate, her company was registered and she had an ad out for persons to fill each spot that was available. Her family was helping her a great deal, her parents gave her a monetary donation and her sisters and the gang pitched in whenever she needed them. All hands were on deck to help her achieve her goal.

Limin’Times Entertainment Guide

Trying not to do much ordering, she was searching around her city and everything within a couple hours to find items that she would need. One of the reasons for the rush was that she was already 25 years old and wanted to have the complex up and running and smoothly making back investments before she even dared to give anyone a chance in her life. Having her own was something she always wanted for herself and with her sister Diamond following her dreams that was Destiny’s motivation to push harder. That night when Patrick suggested that they each go for what they wanted no matter who they had to eliminate to get it, she was happy to know that so far, they each had honestly fought for their dreams without having to sell their souls (or so she thought). “Honey we have been going all week and a few hours straight now. Can we take a break? My feet are killing me and I’m famished,” Destiny’s mom told her as they approached another food court in the mall. “Sure mom,” Destiny replied “let’s go somewhere we can get a great hot meal and relax instead of this crowded place.” The ladies headed out of the mall and straight to their favorite steak house. Once they were seated and 12

had already ordered, Destiny broke the silence and said, “You know mommy, I want to thank you for helping me through this journey, you have accompanied me to all the appointments and mini shopping trips. You and dad have been very supportive and that means so much to me. I thought you were going to flip out on me when I told you I walked off my job.” “To be honest, I was a little upset knowing that you wanted to eventually open your own school but after talking with your dad, he made me realize that you were a grown woman and that I need to support you and not try to dictate your life. After seeing you in action for the last few weeks and how determined you are to get the center up and running, I can never

13

be prouder of the woman you are and are becoming. I love you Destiny, you being happy is the most important thing to me, not what I think you should be doing with your life.” Destiny got up and gave her mom a hug and kisses all over her face. Other customers who were in earshot began clapping and smiling at them. When their food arrived, they ate and got lost in chit chat until their phones rang asking them if they were safe and where they were. Time flies when you’re spending it with someone you love.

Inter-House Sports: History and Success In 1957 at the old Virgin Islands Secondary School, Principal Carlisle Scott created a vision that has been in existence ever since with the launch of inter-house competition with Bronte, Cavelle and Aggrey Houses, from the 150 students at the school. When the school morphed into the BVI High School in 1968, there were eight houses at the time through 1970, before the four that now exist at the Elmore Stoutt High School, with Carlisle, House 4, being named in honour of the legendary principal. Such luminaries as Reverend Edris Christopher O’Neal, International Softball Federation Hall of Famer Walwyn “GM” Brewley, former Deputy Governor Inez Hodge Archibald, current Supervisor of Elections, Juliette Penn and Managing Director/CEO of the Financial Services Robert Mathavious, were all Victor and Victrix Ludorum. On Thursday, further history was created when sisters A’Sia McMaster, 13 and Under Girls Victrix and A’Keela McMaster, 15 and Under Girls Victrix tied with 48 points, marking the first time since 1957, that a pair of siblings of either sex had won the top scoring award in the event. DeAnna Wattley, 2000-2003 — like Christopher O’Neal, 1957-1960 was a four-time Victrix Ludorum— and Wattley’s sister Britney who in 2008 became a Victrix Ludorum, are the first siblings pulling off the feat — but not in the same year of competition as with the McMasters. Christopher DeAnna and Ereia Smith—1988-1991— are the only athletes to have won four successive Victrix Ludorum since 1957 and no male athlete has ever won more

than three successive, as Aliston “Al” Potter, 2001-2003 and Akeem Bradshaw—2014-2016—are the only males to do so. “It’s great, it feels amazing,” A’Sia said of the historic feat, noting that she wasn’t surprised that she and her sister were co Victrix. “Yes, I was, a little bit,” chimed in Akeela. “I wasn’t surprised because I worked hard this season to get what I want,” A’Sia stated. “My favorite event of all was the 200m because I feel that I went through my race great.” Flemming amassed 965 points for its 17th title, while Lettsome moved from fourth to second with a strong second day showing to overtake Carlisle, 766-743. O’Neal finished the competition with 603. Flemming House Master Lashmi Sammy said she’s very proud of her team and revealed the secret formula she has used to motivate the students in her house. “I hope they just continue to do well in the future,” noted Sammy, who said she’s soon retiring. “As soon as they come to high school, I encourage them to join a track team to know their worth. But obviously, the kudos doesn’t go to me but to the track teams and their coaches. I give it to them.” While others balk at Flemming’s dominance, they can take a page out of Sammy’s playbook to level the playing field and motivate their athletes.
