Gaming Night
The Humane Society presents their biggest fundraising event – Gaming Night, this Saturday, from 7pm–1am at the Nanny Cay Beach Bar. Last year’s success raised the non-profit group $50,000 and their aim this time around is to exceed that amount. All proceedings from the event go towards the running cost of the Animal Shelter – helping with the animal food, medications and medical care. Some of this year’s proceeds will also go towards the construction of a new shelter for the animals.

Last year The Humane Society improved their health plan and they also have more cats and dogs in the shelter than before. Since the non-profit organization opened its doors, they have been dedicated in serving the needs of animals. They promote animal welfare, house and care for strays whilst trying to re-home them. Games available for participation on gaming night are Black Jack, Roulette, Poker and Crab Racing. There will also be a raffle and great prizes to be won. Admission is $30 (includes $10 chips). They would like to take this time to thank their sponsors for their continued support and kind donations.

Get Past Your Suffering Some years ago, I met a 34-year-old woman who had lost her mother and was in a physically abusive relationship in the same year. While speaking with her, even though about four years had passed, she still thought of that year as the worst year ever and blamed herself for staying in the relationship so long and had some guilt about not being as attentive as she could have been to her mother. So, while the trauma was difficult, the continuing thoughts for years after impacted her life negatively. How do we get past these issues? How do we heal and go forward so that life can be happier for us? Here are 5 ways: • Journaling. Writing things down, gets it off your mind and into a book in a more reflective way. It’s like you focus on it for a moment and then you can close the book and put it away, literally and figuratively. It comes out of your head. • Sharing. Talking to someone who has been through a similar experience can help you to see what works for them and maybe try it yourself. It also helps you to normalize what you have gone through. Support groups are useful for this purpose. • Counseling. A professional counselor can guide you into how to navigate thoughts that are dark and pervasive and how to change your self-talk so that you don’t blame yourself or sink into a dark depression because of these past events. • Spend time in nature. There is something about plants and flowers and waterfalls and animals that put our soul at peace. When we look at the vast ocean or a full sky of stars, we realize that there is a 11
whole world out there and instead of focusing on just one speck of it that was not good, we can look instead at the huge amount of beauty still available. • Change your thoughts. If we sit and think about the broken parts of ourselves, they will just seem bigger. Having a positive mindset means we can change our thoughts by reminding ourselves that we are beautiful and we deserve a life without too much pain and drama. Taking the time to be gentle with yourself and to heal will mean that you carry a lighter burden day after day, until one day you will notice that you can get through a day and a week without remembering the old trauma. When it does slip back into your mind, it will not bring as much pain, but just be a memory of something that made you stronger.

Theresa and Jonathan were spending their Saturday afternoon at his apartment. When Jonathan struck up a conversation. “Baby,” Jonathan called out to Theresa. “Yes Love,” she replied. “When are you going to introduce me to your lil’ posse?” he asked. “Why you gotta say it like that?” Theresa asked walking towards him. “I’m sorry, I don’t mean it in any way, I’m just saying you tell me so much about them and I have yet to meet them. How about introducing me to them as your friend?” he continued. “But that’s all we are. Are you trying to say that we are more?” she asked sitting next to him on the couch. “I mean, we can be if you would let me in,” he said while turning to look her. “I dunno, I have to be sure this is real and not just some fling,” Theresa said not losing her gaze. “How much more do I have to do to prove to you that I want you? You’re the one that’s keeping us a secret, not me,” Jonathan shot back. After being quiet for a while, Theresa finally said, “So you mean to tell me, that you really want to be seen in public with me? Would you take me around your boys?” Theresa asked, getting up and moving away from Jonathan. “What about them? Baby, you know I would and I been begging you to let’s go out in the day for weeks now. Are you ashamed of me?” Jonathan asked as he got up to stand by her. “No I’m not, but look at me. You don’t care that Limin’Times Entertainment Guide
I’m average looking? People will stare,” Theresa whined and for the first in a long time, she admitted to herself what his friends told her, they all could do with a wardrobe update. “Let them stare,” Jonathan continued, “Can I be honest right now? It might be a shock to you and I also know you might leave but let me be real.” He started to explain to Theresa about being married currently being separated. Him and his wife initially didn’t want to have a messy divorce so they decided to separate and although it’s been two years, neither of them seemed to be making any effort to reconcile. “So, you mean to tell me all this time you’re legally married and you want to be in public with me?” she asked in shock while edging closer to him. “We are separated and legally I can date and see who I want. Here, let me show you the court papers,” he explained. “Do you see any sign of a woman around here except your stuff?” Jonathan asker her while walking over to his desk and pulling open his drawer. Still in shock, Theresa sat back on the couch and asked him to join her. The couple continued the conversation until they reached the common ground that she would introduce him to her friends as her friend until he can prove that his heart was not attached to his legal wife and he was divorced. Instead of spending the night, Theresa decided to go back to her apartment and give Jonathan the time to think on what they talked about. Indeed, there was a court order and now that she knew that, she was definitely going to protect her heart more. 12
Dark Phoenix Here’s another one from my bucket list of movies I missed in theaters that I wanted to see. In Dark Phoenix, the X-Men face their most powerful foe when one of their own, Jean Grey, spirals out of control. During a rescue mission in outer space, Jean is nearly killed when hit by a mysterious force that makes her more powerful and unstoppable. The movie opens with a young Jean (Sophie Turner) and her parents getting into a car accident that causes her mom to perish. She is then taken by Professor X (James McAvory) to the home for X-Men. As the next scene comes into play, you see a much older Jean Mystique (Jennifer Lawrence), Cyclops (Tye Sheridan), Storm (Alexandra Shipp) and Night Crawler (Kodi Smit-McPhee) going on a mission to space to rescue the astronauts. On this mission, you see Jean nearly being killed when she’s hit by a mysterious force. Once she returns home, this makes her more powerful and unstoppable. When Jean goes to visit her father, she finds out that indeed he is alive and realizes that Professor X lied to her about him being alive. Since she 13
could not control her powers, her emotions get the best of her and she causes havoc in the town where her father lives and causes everyone to look at the X-Men differently. If you have been following the XMen franchise, you would know that they were once viewed as monsters and were feared. She next seeks refuge with Magneto (Michael Fassbender) and leaves abruptly before getting any of the help she was seeking. Fleeing the mutant island, Jean is found and approached by Vuk/Smith (Jessica Chastain) who is not a mutant and has ulterior motives for the power Jean possesses. With the quest now focused on Jean and who can get to her first, a fight breaks out outside the home she is in between Magneto and his crew and Professor X and his X-Men. The Army comes in and captures them. After thinking they won, things go south surrounding Jean once again. What does Smith want with Jean? Why does Magneto want to kill Jean and will Professor X save her? Dark Phoenix can be streamed on iTunes.

Softball-Baseball Batting Cage For Virgin Gorda Ground has already been broken and works continue on Saturday towards erecting a baseball-softball batting cage at the Valley Recreation Grounds in Virgin Gorda. “One of the things people know even in cricket, when you try to do batting practice, you have to go chase the ball and it’s not easy to get balls—there’s no store to run to—to get a new set of balls so you have to be protective of that,” noted Josh Ridgeway who’s spearheading the effort. “Therefore, one of the things you purchase is a batting cage. We’ve purchased two fairly sized batting cages. We went through Stephen Payne of the Recreation Trust, Hon Shereen Flax-Charles and Hon Vincent Wheatley, were instrumental in giving us permission and the resources to build.” Ridgeway said they have lots of astro turf donated from Yates Associates while Anselmo Stevens donated his roller to flatten everything out. The project came out of an informal discussion with a group of parents discussing activities for kids on the island six months ago and the need for a baseball and softball facility. “It’s been a total community endeavor. Hon Neville “Sheep” Smith donated some funds because there’s work to be done. Phase two is building a backstop to start getting softball and baseball back on Virgin Gorda,” he pointed out. “The only way we can get any sort of effective change is through the schools. There’s no doubt about it. It’s a challenge to get kids all rounded up. We’re all working, busy
and have other multiple things that tie us down, but the one thing all kids have is school. If we can incorporate it through the school system, Hon (Natalio) Wheatley is on board and very receptive. All we have to do is come up with a plan and execute it. The door is open. It’s up to us to come and kinda kick it open and really get the sport back to where it was.” Ridgeway reflected on when softball was in its heyday and was competitive internationally in the 80s and 90s. In 1987 for example, the BVI national softball team played in the Pan Am Games and lost 4-3 to Cuba, in the bronze medal game. The sport has had a steady decline ever since. “The BVI competed against countries that were funded—well funded—by governments,” Ridgeway pointed out. “Little BVI came in and was knocking on the door. Just imagine if we had 1% of what those countries give to their federations, where we could be. It’s only going to take one— just like (Kyron) McMaster—it just takes one to inspire a generation, so it can happen. You don’t have to be from New York City, Los Angeles or these big cities. You just need to have a dream, have the facilities to do that, so that’s what we’re trying to do.” Persons interested in volunteering on Saturday can contact Josh Ridgeway at 346-1894.
