This Week’s Feature Story
‘Staying In’ – Is The New Going Out Half Men with new leading man Ashton Kutcher. Rumor has it that all of “Charlie’s” ex-girlfriends will feature in the first episode on Monday night so it had better be a large set! Whilst I’m no TV addict, I would recommend last year’s newcomer, The Good Wife (CBS) and for lighter entertainment the return of the very watchable The Big Bang Theory (CBS), Modern Family (ABC), The Amazing Race (CBS) and The Office (NBC). And, who can wait for the return of ABC’s hit hospital drama Grey’s Anatomy when we get to see whether “McDreamy” can ever forgive Meredith? The show is nicely followed by LA spin-off Private Practice – which makes for a great Thursday night in. Last but definitely not least is the return of Fox’s House; with his terrible bedside manners yet brilliant diagnostic skills this off-the-wall specialist may have finally behaved so badly that he is beyond forgiveness, not even from his best friend. Dexter fans will be delighted to hear that our favorite vigilante serial killer with a heart is back on HBO for a sixth season on Sunday nights at 9pm, however, its timing does clash with NBC’s Sunday Night Football. Guess this could be the time to get that second TV after all! — Jan Critchley
It’s great to stay in sometimes and get cozy on the couch, so grab some popcorn and curl up for an evening of great TV and watch your favorite primetime shows that are returning back into our living rooms over the next month. Tonight, the CW network sees the return of its No. 1 hit show, Vampire Diaries and the love triangle that exists between the three main characters. Other CW shows that mostly cater to a younger audience are 90210, America’s Next Top Model, Nikita and Supernatural. Top series, Gossip Girl also returns to the channel and follows our favorite Upper East Siders’ around the world on their sizzling summer exploits XOXO! From next Monday, the big networks bring back their star shows in full force including Fox’s award winning Glee, the highly anticipated musical comedy that since its debut has become a bona fide cultural phenomenon. Other favorites include CBS’s How I Met Your Mother, Hawaii Five-O, Survivor and Two and a

Colombiana It’s 1992 in Bogota, Colombia. Cataleya’s father played by Jesse Borrego learns that Don Luis (Beto Benites), a drug lord is putting a hit out on him and his family for a valuable microchip that he holds and that Marcos wants. Cataleya’s father gives her the microchip with instructions to take it to the US Ambassador, and tells her this is her “passport” along with the address of her uncle Emilio (Cliff Curtis) who lives in the United States. Nine-years-old Cataleya played by Amandla Stenberg witnesses her parents' murder by Marco (Jordi Mollà), the hench-

Foraging For Local Produce I know that we live on islands here. I also know that the soil is not naturally mineral rich for growing and harvesting. It must be worked, treated, turned over, weeded, sprayed and cared for. I also know I have tasted some of the sweetest mangoes ever, right here on Tortola. Also some pretty awesome papayas, sugar apples, local lemons and pineapples. So it is a bit frustrating when shopping at the local markets in the territory, that so much of what I know can be grown locally here – is imported from other countries. Case in point: Last week’s grocery list (after a careful examination of labels) included oranges from CHILE, papayas from BELIZE, avocadoes from SANTO DOMINGO, lemons and limes from FLORIDA and most of the unmarked produce from the USA. It makes common sense that the sweeter the fruit or more tasty the vegetable, the closer it is to the harvest point. We all know the pure ecstatic joy of plucking ripe fruit from a tree and savouring the taste. Obviously, if the fruit or produce we ingest is harvested while still green, put in large containers, brought over long distances, handled countless times, the possibility that it might taste remotely what it looks like is highly unlikely. Like a tomato - looks like a tomato, feels like a tomato – but the taste? There are certain foods I choose not to eat here, although they are shipped in. One of those is corn. Call me spoiled, but it is worth the annual summer trip to upstate New York when corn is in season to get the taste of bursting–with–flavor local yellow and white corn. I would also wait for tomatoes but then my salads would look a little bare and all those dishes that call for tomatoes would be lacking a key ingredient. Limin’ Times Entertainment Guide
Photo by Dean Greenaway: BVI Farmer’s week 2010
Now with all this grumbling there is a bit of gratitude. I do recall the days when produce choices were limited to root vegetables. The spread included potatoes, yams, tania, dasheen, green bananas – and on a really good day you might get cauliflower of broccoli. This certainly limited one’s gourmet cooking aspirations. Now the stores are loaded with exotic foods and condiments from all over the world, the trouble is – it’s not local. Every year we honor our farmers with Farmer’s Week, a chance to see the best of what is locally grown. But after all those blue and red ribbons disappear, where’s the produce? Many Caribbean Islands pride themselves in having a Farmer’s market –some seven days a week! Old photos testify we used to have that tradition down by the Harbour in Road Town as well. Now, we have to search for a farmer’s stand; one in East End, a small shack in Carrot Bay, a few sellers by the roundabout and a few local products in the supermarket. I say if we can put a Craft Alive Village together, we can proudly display a farmer’s market – downtown and central to all. Not a stand for a day, but a permanent and proud testament to the fact that we can grow our own food right here 6

Zooey Deschanel is the ‘New Girl’ Maybe New Girl could have been made without Zooey Deschanel, but it’s hard to imagine. Virtually no other current performer so perfectly embodies the kooky, endearing quality required by the Fox sitcom that debuts Tuesday, Sept. 20. “I would like to think it was written for me, but I don’t think it was,” says the (500) Days of Summer actress who’s helping to give Fox a family acting dynasty: Sister Emily is starting her seventh season on the mystery series Bones. In New Girl, Deschanel is Jess, who becomes the roommate of three buddies (Jake Johnson, Max Greenfield, Lamorne Morris) after she breaks up with her cheating boyfriend. It’s an uncertain arrangement at the start, but if there’s any doubt it can work over the long haul — for the characters or for viewers — there’s the Deschanel factor to consider. Strongly. “I mean, here’s the thing,” she explains in her disarming way. “I don’t know if I’ve ever seen a part that was as charming and exciting. She’s very much herself, and she’s almost too in touch with her emotions. Reading the pilot script, I was literally laughing out loud, having such a good time. I think this opportunity became appealing to me because the material’s so great. The thought of doing it for a long time is actually really exciting to me.” That’s a big statement for Deschanel, since her movie career has been quite consistent. Currently featured in Our Idiot Brother, she also has appeared in
Your Highness, Yes Man and Elf. However, she reasons, “They don’t make as many movies now as they used to. If there’s any character I want to play forever and ever, it’s this one, so I’m psyched.” Such praise is music to the ears of New Girl creator and executive producer Liz Meriwether, who also wrote last winter’s Natalie Portman-Ashton Kutcher movie No Strings Attached. She says, “I remember the first time (Deschanel) came in, she read with the guys auditioning to play the guy parts. Just the second she opened her mouth to do the scene, the feeling in the room was, ‘This is a perfect match of character and actress.’ We really didn’t do a lot of finessing. It was great.” The way Deschanel sees it, “Liz and I, our souls are connected. And when your souls are connected, you’re meant to do a show together.” The inclination of Deschanel to sing was an added plus: As the New Girl debut confirms, Jess can break into a tune (“Ethel Merman, a little jazz standard, a little heavy metal,” the star notes) in a nanosecond, even when doing a striptease for her soon-to-be-ex. “I feel Jess is not a singer because she thinks she’s a great singer,” Deschanel says. “It’s just part of how she expresses herself. I feel like the singing moments are really well peppered in, because you don’t want to overdo it. That would be crazy. When there’s an awkward moment, she sings, but we kind of play with it.” That said, Deschanel says she also embraces the steady schedule and familiar work New Girl is giving her. “I just like to know what to expect,” she concludes, “in very small ways.” 13

Going Beyond A Fall Running Tradition If at no other time in the year, people leave their homes early in the morning and come out to run in droves–it’s in the fall, during the annual College Classic Series which opens it’s 16th series on Saturday in Paraquita Bay. Looking back over the last 26 years of organizing road running activities—from the Lucozade Relays, and 2 mile road races in the mid 80s, the NDAC 5K in the early 90s, the College Classic Series in the mid 90s, and now in the mid 2000s, the Blenheim Trust 5K Series, the Ceres Juices 10K Series and BVI Half Marathon—running has just not taken off in our jurisdiction. In more nature jurisdictions, 5Ks, 10Ks, Half Marathons and Marathons attract thousands of runners of all levels of fitness who race for big bucks. Somehow, we haven’t had the running bug fully hit here in races over 2 miles with the College Series attracting over 200 participants on many occasions. Add a mile more in a 5K—which is merely 3.1 miles— and the numbers dramatically falls off as more people seem less interested in running the longer the race gets. Of course there are the myriad of excuses about not liking to run on the roads, not wanting people to see you running/exercising and yada, yada, yada, but it still boils down to people taking responsibility and looking after their health—especially in a country where obesity, hypertension and other silent diseases are prevalent. It’s good however to see the people who run in the 2 mile College Series, tackle the 5Ks and also showing up for the various 10K races, testing their fit-

ness levels, stamina, endurance and determination. If one notes, there are now road races throughout the year—from February to November—culminating with the BVI Half Marathon, now in its sixth year. Therefore, this year is as good as any to make a commitment to go beyond the boundaries of the 2 miles series and venture into 5K races in the spring when road racing returns. Keeping fit year round is something all of us must be concerned about, not just in the fall. Registration for Saturday’s College Classic Series begins at 6:30 a.m. with the race scheduled for 7 a.m. As part of the series this year, there will be two “Races For A Cause” in partnership with the BVI Diabetes Association––one on Virgin Gorda on Saturday, October 29 and the other on Tortola on Saturday, November 12. The full 2011 schedule is as follows: Tortola: September 17; October 1; October 15; November 12 and November 26. Virgin Gorda: September 24; October 8; October 29 and November 5. 17
