By Paul Backshall

Paris by Scooter them, we enjoyed a coffee in a local bistro while I told him the story of why my mother would never allow me in my youth to ride on a motorcycle. Suffice it to say, the story involved two London busses and a former friend of hers. “Don’t worry,” said Philippe, handing me a helmet and unlocking his scooter, “I drive very carefully.” What could be scary, I thought, after driving for years in Tortola traffic? No sooner was I perched on the back of the Vespa, than we accelerated off down the Montmartre street, towards the heart of the city. I grabbed a handful of Philippe’s sweater and clutched at the railing around the rear seat. My legs wound tightly around the engine housing and I got a firmer grip on Philippe as we weaved through the traffic. “It’s a good thing you have love handles,” I said grabbing a slight bulge at his waist. “Don’t squeeze them, or I’ll go faster,” was his retort. Somehow we made it through the mass of cars, scooters, busses and pedestrians taking advantage of this sunny day, though sometimes I closed my eyes and said a small prayer. But after all, I reasoned, if your time is up, speeding through the streets of Paris is not a bad way to go.

It had been a while since Betty and I last visited Paris. Our route from the Virgin Islands to our summer home in southwest France quite often took us through the French capital, but more recently we had stopped in London to spend time with new grandchildren before flying on to Toulouse. This year we would make a special trip to London later in the summer. We found our friends and part time Tortola residents Philippe and Sophie enjoying a long weekend in the first warm weather for many weeks. To celebrate, Sophie suggested we join them in an historical walking tour of a section of Paris once dedicated to a sprawling vegetable market, and later taken over by aristocrats from many parts of the world who built magnificent homes there. We were about to be taken behind the facades to see the private courtyards and gardens of those who prospered before the revolution. To get there Philippe suggested I accompany him on his motor scooter (by far the best and quickest way to get around the congested city, he claimed) and we would meet our wives by the St. Paul metro station to begin the tour. Since we would arrive well before

Ask Koren

Dear Koren, My boyfriend and I have been in a loving relationship for some time now. Everyone says that we were meant to be together but I have a problem. In a year’s time I have to leave the country to further my studies and I don't know how to tell him. Suppose it breaks his heart! I was thinking about a long distance relationship but I don't want to hold him back. I love him very much but my studies are very important to me. What should I do? –Worried

notice, he might be able to apply for school himself and rustle up enough money to attend. When two people are in love, they will make an effort to find a workable situation. Long distance relationships have their challenges, but many of them have worked well. You will have to be committed to each other and that means being faithful and communicating on a regular basis as much as is possible. With email, Skype, WhatsApp, blackberry messenger and all the other options, communicating should not be an issue. The longer you wait to tell him, the more difficult it will be for him and for you. Waiting too long might make it seem as if you were being deceptive. Pursuing your studies and being away should not be perceived as holding him back. He has to decide if he is willing to wait for you. You can even visit each other on your school vacations and remember that in some instances, absence does make the heart grow fonder.

Dear Worried, Your concerns are legitimate. If you have a relationship where you both care deeply for each other and it has been going for some time, it is difficult to have to leave that safety net. However, you have made a marvelous decision to pursue further studies which can only benefit you in the long term. Someone who really loves you will not be selfish, but rather would be proud of you and be happy that you are pursuing your goals. I suggest you sit down with your boyfriend and tell him as soon as possible so that you can plan how you will handle it together. You never know, with early

Stars and Friends Gather for National Memorial Day Concert As the years have gone on, Mantegna notes, he has “picked up the mantle” from Durning by enlisting such talents as Sinise, Oscar winner Forest Whitaker (who did last year’s short-lived CBS spinoff series Criminal Minds: Suspect Behavior, Jimmy Smits, Denis Leary, Laurence Fishburne, Bonnie Hunt and Criminal Minds co-star A.J. Cook for the concert. “It’s a blue-collar crowd for the most part, and that’s what I like about it,” Mantegna says. “It’s the heart of America, if you want to call it that. This is a country of extremes, but at its core, it has one central personality that’s personified by military families and the people who come to the concert.”

Whether someone is an annual participant or a first-timer, the significance of the National Memorial Day Concert is self-evident. This year, the event — which PBS televises again on Sunday, May 27, from the West Lawn of the U.S. Capitol in Washington, D.C. (check local listings) — has stars of both kinds. Joe Mantegna, fresh off the Season 7 finale of the CBS drama Criminal Minds, co-hosts the concert with Gary Sinise CSI: NY for the seventh time. And his friend Dennis Franz, the four-time NYPD Blue Emmy winner and a Vietnam War veteran, debuts in the concert by giving a dramatic reading. Also on the guest roster: Oscar winner Ellen Burstyn; music stars Natalie Cole and Trace Adkins; two veterans of Fox’s American Idol, Chris Daughtry (with his band Daughtry) and the just-ended season’s Jessica Sanchez; actress Selma Blair Legally Blonde; tenor Russell Watson; and another frequent participant in the event, retired Gen. Colin Powell. Jack Everly will conduct the National Symphony Orchestra. “Charlie Durning (the actor and military recipient of a Silver Star and three Purple Hearts) came to me, and that’s the reason I did my first one,” Mantegna recalls. “And it had such an impact on me, I thought Charlie gave me a gift by bringing me in. I love the people who stage these concerts, but show business is not their world. I remember even having to kind of explain who Gary Sinise was. It just wasn’t on their radar.” 9

The Iron Lady Margaret Thatcher was often referred to as the Iron Lady, and Meryl Streep’s portrayal of her – one of the most important female politicians of modern times – is stunning. She has embodied the character of the former British Prime Minister like no other actress could, deftly displaying both the young and vibrant Mrs. Thatcher in her early career days and later as a woman teetering on dementia. The movie’s director Phyllida Lloyd chooses to see Thatcher’s life through the lens of her latter years. We meet Thatcher in her apartment with both a small staff and her daughter Carol (Olivia Coleman) looking after

By Dean “The Sportsman” Greenaway

Can you do 5 days, 132 miles at 82? I attended the Senior Games two weeks ago and was shocked to realize I’d qualify for them in a few years since they were targeting 55 years upwards. We aren’t a society that has encouraged active involvement in sports and recreation well into our senior years. Most of our seniors enjoy a sedentary lifestyle with nothing catering to health maintenance. But yesterday, our oldest Olympian began a five-day sojourn to cover five Marathons, yes five 26.2 mile treks or 132 miles at the ripe age of 82. Dr. Robin Tattersall, a family crew, along with former Governor David Pearey, are in England competing in the Forces March. “I’m excited about it and trying to see if I can meet the goal which is to finish,” my fellow 1984 Olympian said. “It’s a long distance and covering 26.2 miles each day.” For his 75th birthday, Doc raced across the Atlantic from New York to England on a yacht, and completed his first Marathon at 80. He learnt of the event last year. The Forces March commemorates the march by the airborne division during World War II, who were the first people to land on Normandy on D-day. “This isn’t about speed,” Doc noted. “This is about endurance.” One reason our eldest Olympian is doing this apart from his own health, is trying to stimulate other people into exercising. “I only started doing Marathons after my 80th birthday,” he noted. “Being a doctor here for 47 years, I can see the general health of the population has deteriorated – not that we don’t have better facilities. In general, there has been an explosion of obesity and diabetes, heart related conditions and also an explosion in cancer.”

Dr. Robin Tattersall

There has been a change in lifestyle as well, he noted. “When I came in the old days, people grew their own food, they fished out of the sea, they walked everywhere as there were only 300 vehicles in the country so people used their legs. Now people get in a car to go 100 yards,” he observed. “So it has had a very bad effect on the general health. I’m hoping that I can at least encourage some people to get out there and join me. There’s never a dull moment. I never get bored doing these long walks.” In preparation for the event, Dr. Tattersall has covered 500 miles since Jan 1. His short walks take him from Brewers Bay to Sky World – a hike climbing up to 1,000 ft from sea level. He also walks from Brewers Bay, over Ridge Road, through East End and out around the Prison and return. “I haven’t done more than 20 miles, but I have done three or four Half Marathons in four days to see how my body would recover and it seemed to be doing so, once I don’t push too much,” he said. “It’s listening to your body, working out your speed and being able to get up the next day and go again.” It’s the same recipe he’ll use in his latest challenge. 19
