This Week’s Feature Story
News, Views and Interviews The first thing I noticed about Violet Gaul when we met to talk about her shows on Caribbean Broadcast Network was that this is a lady who wears many hats! She had just finished at the gym after completing the first CBN Today show of the week (starts at 6:30am) and would soon be heading off to Tropic Aisle, the real estate company that she runs with her husband, and it was still only 10am! Her show, CBN Today airs daily Monday to Friday. Together with co-host Damion Grange, Violet said that they try and create an informal atmosphere in the studio similar to the US’s NBC Today or Good Morning America. The first half of the show is dedicated to local and international news and weather, then an invited guest joins them for the second half for more in-depth analysis on a particular subject. Her other program, Then and Now is a 30 minute documentary style program where she interviews older people and cultural icons about life in the Virgin Islands when they were younger. Violet said that she is particularly interested in an upcoming interview
with Elton Georges who will be speaking on the legislative process over the years. She laughed, “I am very excited to have Elton as a guest on the show as he is like a walking encyclopedia!” She also has a Then and Now blog and she provides weekly updates. The blog is full of historical data on the Virgin Islands and its people. She plans to upload all of the programs that have been aired since it started in March 2012 and once complete give a copy of the blog to the government for their archives. A realtor by profession, Violet is licensed both here in the BVI and the US, however, she now spends most of her time here due to her many commitments. She concludes, “I am fascinated by people, talking to them and learning new things – to me learning is what life is all about.” Tune into CBN Today on Channel 5 and Cable Channel 51 weekdays from 6:30am to 7:30am. Then and Now is aired every Sunday and Wednesday at 8pm, Saturday at 8am and Sunday at 8am and you can find Violet’s blog at www.voiletgaul.com. – Jan Critchley

Copy Cat Dresser
Ask Koren
Dear Koren, I have a friend who asks me every time we are out where I bought my clothes and how much I paid for them. The other day we were at Trellis and she showed up in white pants exactly like what I had worn a few weeks ago. Should I say anything about her copy cat bad ways? –Susie Dear Susie, You obviously have good taste in clothes so your friend wants what you are wearing. One way to look at it is as a compliment. Remember the quote? “Imitation is the sincerest form of flattery.” However, it would be irritating to have to disclose where you bought your stuff and for how much. If it is expensive, you feel badly for saying you spent so much on a simple top; if it is cheap, you don’t want everyone knowing that you wear $5 jeans. A real lady would not ask the price of your clothes unless you all were really close bosom buddies; and every time too? Nooooo, that is too much. Maybe she needs help putting her clothes together or is lost when it comes to fashion whats, wheres and hows – what to wear, where to find it and how to put it all together so she looks fabulous. Maybe you can give her general guidelines but telling

her a few stores that have good stuff and also some pointers about what you think would work for her. Let her know that everyone has their own unique sense of style and what is good for the goose is not always good for the gander. You definitely don’t need to feel obligated to telling anyone how much you paid for anything. You can tactfully say, “I don’t remember’ or coyly respond, “good girls don’t tell.” Say it with a smile. After a few times, she will not ask anymore, because the answer she is seeking does not come. Not everyone was born with tact or a great sense of fashion and not everyone understands that there is a time and place for everything so you are helping her in so many ways. Pat yourself on the back girlfriend! Send your questions to askkoren@live.com and a response will be provided

No Place like Home Travels this spring took me away from the BVI for several months. However, this wasn’t the usual US visit and back, but a sojourn to Israel, certainly a hotly contested region in the Middle East, which commands news headlines daily. It made me realize some of the things we take for granted here in the BVI. Travel has a way of magnifying differences in cultures, customs and political ideologies, so like sitting down for a Thanksgiving supper and recounting our blessings, the traveler comes back to his or her own land and appreciates it in a new way. Organizers are hoping to double last year’s turnout of 60 people and those with fins and/or snorkels are also welcome. All proceeds go to KATS, and as part of Ogier’s “Go Green” campaign, they have organized a beach clean up on the day. The cost is $30 per person and kids under 18 swim free. All participants get a swim cap, medal and BBQ lunch, so dive in and have some fun to support a great cause.

Lifetime Takes A Ride In Bristol Palin: Life’s a Tripp It’s the dream of many young women to move to sunny Los Angeles and stay in a big, beautiful house, but for 21year-old Bristol Palin — eldest daughter of 2008 GOP vice-presidential candidate and former Alaska Gov. Sarah Palin — there’s no place like home. On Tuesday, June 19, Lifetime premieres Bristol Palin: Life’s a Tripp, chronicling single mother Palin’s sojourn in the City of Angels and her eventual return to her hometown of Wasilla, Alaska, and the warm embrace of her extended family. “I’m in Alaska,” she says, speaking in early May. “All the snow’s melting, and the ice on the lakes is all thawed out.” As the show opens, Palin heads down to Southern California to work for a charity, with her toddler son, Tripp, and younger sister, Willow, in tow. They begin their visit staying in the sumptuous home of a family friend, but Palin soon discovers life in L.A. isn’t all sunshine and palm trees. Among the incidents captured on camera is a well-publicized encounter between Palin, a couple of visiting friends and a West Hollywood restaurant patron who shouts insults and degrading comments about her mother while Bristol is riding a mechanical bull (the heckler, Stephen Hanks, later apologized). “I’m glad that Lifetime was there during the Saddle Ranch incident this past summer,” Palin says, “and I’m glad that people will be able to see that side
of things, get a little glimpse of what my family goes through.” As to what she learned from living in Los Angeles, Palin says, “The biggest lesson is just sticking to all my beliefs. The whole Los Angeles trip, running into that guy at Saddle Ranch, makes me more concrete in the beliefs that I believe in and what I stand for. “I’m not going to change because I was living in California. I’m not going to go buy a BMW and have all these materialistic things. I’m still going to be Bristol at the end of the day, and none of that stuff is important to me. That was just confirmed in L.A. “I could see how people just get caught up in the whole thing. It’s just a different world. I’m just a lot more happy in Alaska, where people are nice, and they don’t care what street you live off or what type of purse you have. I’m grateful that I got to grow up in Alaska, around people who aren’t like that.” But Palin does miss something about Los Angeles. “Just the warm weather,” she says. “It’s beautiful there.” This is the second series Palin has been involved in, the first being TLC’s Sarah Palin’s Alaska, which featured the entire Palin clan — mother Sarah, father Todd and siblings Track, Bristol, Willow, Piper and baby Trig — exploring the beauties of the 49th state. But the focus of Life’s a Tripp is a little different. “My parents don’t appear that much in the show,” Palin says. “I think they’re in a couple of episodes, but they’re OK with it. They’re always going to have a say in things. They’re always looking out for myself and my siblings, and I’m grateful that they do that. 13

Woman in Black If you enjoy a good thriller without the gore but with lots of suspense, then this is the movie for you. In this chilling film Daniel Radcliffe of Harry Potter fame, plays an inexperienced London solicitor, Arthur Kipps, who is still grieving the loss of his beloved wife Stella on the birth of their son four years ago. His dispassionate employer gives him a last chance to keep his job and he is assigned to travel to a remote village in the swampy coastal area of the Midlands. His job is to examine the documentation at Eel Marsh House that belonged to the recently deceased Alice Drablow. Luckily, Arthur befriends Sam Daily (Ciarán Hinds) on the train and the man offers him a ride to the Gifford Arms Inn where he is met with a frosty reception by the inn-keeper and is grudgingly given the unwelcoming attic for his stay. Sam invites Arthur for dinner the next night with his wife Elizabeth (Janet McTeer) where he discovers that they have lost a son. Sam also lets slip a few details about a mysterious, cloaked woman who’s occasionally glimpsed at the window of the mansion. Kipps learns a great deal more about her firsthand when, in order to finish his paperwork on time, he decides to spend the night at Eel Marsh House himself. Things go bump in the night, toys start up of their own accord, and a rocking chair rocks unconLimin’ Times Entertainment Guide
trollably by itself, he even sees the shadowy image of a woman surrounded by ghostly images of children. Other evidence he finds at the house suggest that the widow suffered a horrific experience involving her own son, and is now seeking revenge on the terrified locals. This is most definitely a film that will give you goose bumps rather than make you jump out of your seat. And, without giving the whole plot away – the twist at the end is unexpected and gives a good shocking finale to the film. Watch it, but don’t watch it alone!
