HLSCC Performing Arts Series Presents

Also this week: 2nd Virgin islands horse Racing triple Crown • henry haid & the sun kings @ Myett’s
This Week’s Feature Story
One Hit Wonders Tour at Myett’s Henry Haid and the Sun Kings with their classic rock n’ roll repertoire will launch their One Hit Wonders tour of the VI at Myett’s this weekend with performances both Friday, the 11th and Saturday the 12th at 8pm. Expect to hear great renditions of hits from the 60s, 70s and 80s. This is part of the Red Stripe True Music Series, sponsored by Tico and hosted by Myett’s, that promises exciting musical entertainment monthly. Popular New York musician Henry Haid (“The Piano Man”) and the Sun Kings are no strangers to the Virgin Islands, having performed both many times both on Tortola and in St Croix. In fact the Sun Kings Band was formed in 1995 in the VI with guitarist Steve Richman and Paul Dirks on Bass. The rest of the group hails from the US and includes pianist and lead vocalist Henry Haid, George Cortes on sax, Jake Adams on drums and vocalist Jacqueline Duryea. Henry Haid got his start as a keyboard musician and vocalist in New York City playing in bands, performing in clubs and for corpo-
rate and private events. His big break came in 2003, when he was asked by Billy Joel and Twyla Tharp to play the Piano Man part in their Broadway musical Movin’ Out, which had a successful run on Broadway through December 2005. The following year Haid formed a new band called Glass Houses, which was a ten-piece tribute to the music of Billy Joel. The tribute show had a very successful run in Florida. In 2007 Haid formed his Only in America band and has gone on to produce a well-received ten-song CD “Our Time, ” which was just released in 2012. Myett’s will have a double-bill both weekend nights, so be sure to get there early to get a good seat for the entertainment. Friday night Brian Neale will begin the Happy Hour music at 5pm with Henry Haid and the Sun Kings following at 8pm performing their “One Hit Number Show.” Saturday night the early evening entertainment begins with island favorite KapEye, followed by the “One Hit Number Show.” Reservations for dinner are encouraged. Staying Cool with Tarpons it and so I got very, very respectful. Anyways, I learned from that experience and promised my self to relax no matter what I saw on this dive. So as I was hovering, I was admiring the ray of lights that sliced trough the water almost all the way to the bottom, illuminating and providing colors to this amazing scene. Suddenly I started seeing something shining at the distance, we were moving closer to it, and then a massive school of huge tarpons started appearing clearer, each one reflecting the light rays off their back like well-polished armor. They were suspended all around us and pointing at the same place. They hardly moved, Megan delicately swam straight to them and they slowly moved just enough to avoid any contact, calmly like leaves in a soft gentle wind. They looked pretty big next to Megan and they just stared at the distance. It got me curious, what are they staring at? This time I stayed cool and tried no to think that they were under some defense mechanism because a larger more aggressive depredator was around. No, I didn’t think any of that, at all… I swear. Thankfully, none of the things that I didn’t think were actually happening.
I’ve been very lucky to be able to get my dive certification here in Tortola. The warm Caribbean sun, with a nice tropical breeze, characterizes every day in this island. I’m very excited of my recent, third and best dive yet. My dive instructor Megan and I left the Nanny Cay Marina a Sunday morning enjoying another flawless day in the BVI. We found a nice spot in Norman Island; where we anchor, we got our equipment on and then jumped in the clear, refreshing water. The visibility was great that day; we could appreciate the vibrant colors as we kept going deeper underwater and the temperature was luke-warm perfect. We reached to the bottom and proceed with my third required skill test; the two weeks of intense studying proved effective. Megan, my instructor, gave me the ok sign once we finish testing; we made neutral buoyancy and started to browse over the corals. I kept my breathing on check, breathing deeply and constantly like the textbook said and hoping not to suck all the air up and running my trip short like I did in my first dive. Just to be fair, I saw a shark on my first dive and I think that really contributed to my heavy excited breathing. It was a nurse shark, but a shark nevertheless and it deserves respect. I couldn’t help but think about “shark week” the moment I saw

Ask Koren Your personal E-therapist, is in the house!
Shopaholic Ask Koren Dear Koren, I’m a shopaholic and now that it is the holidays, it is even harder for me because I am so depressed sometimes that I will shop to feel better and I buy expensive things for people hoping they will like me more and I’m not sure it makes a difference. How do I control myself and not go overboard with the shopping? –Desperate Woman
through weak moments. He or she can remind you of the benefits of sticking to your course and give you some positive encouragement and also some strong-arming if necessary. • Use cash. If you have your checkbook or debit or credit cards, it is easier to buy more. Having a limited amount of cash on you means you can only buy so much. • Shop with someone else. Shopping with a companion means you have to share the time between their interests and yours, leaving you less time to wander around picking up things you don’t need. • Find ways of feeling good from the inside out. Instead of allowing yourself to feel momentary pleasure because of material things, try to get joy from spending time with people, reading books, watching movies or enjoying any activity that helps you to feel better, whether alone or with company. Please try to figure out what is making you depressed and deal with it from the beginning from the root cause. We cannot buy people’s affections, it must be given freely and some persons will use you if they know you have those insecurities. We all have various challenges in life and over-spending is a big one for many people, so you are not alone. There are sites online that offer support groups, where you can talk to others and get helpful tips from them and you can also download budget forms and other tools. Don’t give up on “you” and put some good effort into changing your habits and watch your dollars stretch.
Dear Woman, While it is good that you can call a spade a spade, you still have to be mindful of the ways in which you refer to yourself. Saying you are a shopaholic and admitting you are depressed is a good step in the right direction, but calling yourself desperate is not good for your motivation. It gives the impression that you lack all control and anything goes. For you to be able to overcome your bad habits, you must be able to admit you have a problem, but also that you are capable of overcoming them with effort and if necessary, assistance. Here are some strategies for you to consider practicing to help you. • Wait before buying something. If you are in a store and think you must have something, go home and sleep on it and you will find you wake up the next day without the guilt of an impulse purchase. You might even see something at home that can be substituted for that item. • Shop with a list. Plan your shopping by making a list of what you need to get and perhaps the places where you can get them. This way you stay as much as possible on course and just make up your mind not to get anything that is not on your list. • Call a friend. Have someone on speed dial who is aware of your challenges and who can talk you Limin’ Times Entertainment Guide

Flight Flight is an exciting movie with masterful direction and action — it could possibly be one of this year’s best. Whip Whittaker (Denzel Washington) is a man who has made some poor decisions in his life. He is an anxious alcoholic who amplifies his drunkenness with drugs. What’s worse is that he regularly puts the lives of others at risk in the process of his own self-destruction by flying passenger aircraft under the influence of these substances. Whittaker has risked flying while under the influence a number of times and has acquired a false sense of security in his ability to operate an aircraft under the influence of some pretty heavy stuff. However, something happens that shakes Whittaker’s sense of self and security, but not in the way one might expect. Approximately half an hour after take-off through some rather rough turbulence, every pilot’s wildest fears befall Whittaker. A dreadful noise is heard that awakens him from his inebriated slumber and in an instant, the plane drops 10,000 feet. The engines explode, and parts of the plane begin to break off. Whittaker’s co-pilot takes to prayer while passengers scream in fear. In fact the entire plane collapses into chaos and confusion and utter fear, with just one exception: Whittaker. Despite his inebriated state, he manages to maintain complete control of his senses, and of the aircraft. He puts all his experience and training to excellent use as he slows the plane’s plummet, stabilizes it, and crash lands in a field next to a church in Atlanta, Georgia. Whittaker awakens in a hospital room, where he
learns that just six of the 102 passengers perished in the flight, a figure that could have been significantly worse had it not been for his composed handling of the ordeal. One would expect Whittaker to be hailed a hero for his efforts, but there’s just one small problem. While he was unconscious, a toxicology test was taken, revealing that he was under the influence of alcohol and drugs while operating that fateful flight. Regardless of Whittaker’s heroics, the toxicology test proves he is also a criminal who will have to answer for flying a plane under the influence of drugs and alcohol. So rather than a parade in honor of a pilot who successfully landed a plane in a critical situation, jail time awaits Whittaker. Whittaker’s union rep Charlie (Bruce Greenwood) and lawyer Hugh (Don Cheadle) want to help him avoid prison. After all, this situation is tricky. Though Whittaker placed the lives of countless people at risk by taking to the air under the influence, it was his quick thinking and composure in a rocky situation that was not of his doing that saved a number of lives. So should he go to prison? But more importantly, the question is, will this prove to be the moment of no return for Whittaker? Flight is a wonderfully complex film showcasing a powerful difference between the calm, calculated man at the controls of the plane and the one who has seemingly lost all control of his own life. 13

Tennis stars serve the ‘CSI’ world in new CBS episode Chris Evert and Lindsay Davenport are tennis icons, but thanks to one of television’s most popular series, they’re trying a new game. With more than 200 singles titles between them, they play themselves — as does another veteran of the sport, Justin Gimelstob — on CBS’ CSI: Crime Scene Investigation Wednesday, Jan. 23. They’re seen covering a big match for a player who’s found dead soon after (in a tennis ball firing machine, no less), and for both Evert and Davenport, the opportunity was something they couldn’t resist. Evert explains she’s a friend of series star Elisabeth Shue. “She plays in my pro-celebrity event every year, and she’s really good, one of the best celebrity players I know. I think she had mentioned they wanted (John) McEnroe for this, and I said, ‘Well, OK. Have a good show.’ Then my agent got a call from the producer, and I said, ‘Yeah, as long as I’m not the (murder) victim, it’d be fine with me.’ ” One scene finds Evert in a ball-hitting workout with Shue’s character, forensic sleuth Julie Finlay, while being interrogated. “I think that meant a lot” to Shue, Evert reflects. “It was so funny. I was more worried about the lines, and she was more worried about the hitting. It was just like talking to my friend, so I wasn’t intimidated.” Evert also liked being in the same boat with Davenport, since the CSI hour opens with them doing commentary on the match the victim-to-be ultimately wins. They both cover tennis for ESPN now, and the cheerful Davenport says she was “shocked and flattered” to be part of the episode. “My husband and I have three small kids, so we don’t watch a lot of TV,
but ‘CSI’ is definitely one of the shows. “I was a little bit unsure for about a week after I said ‘yes,’ because I was thinking, ‘I’m way out of my comfort zone.’ They reassured me it would be fine, because it was really what I do in my profession. They said, ‘Don’t sweat it. We’ll make it look good.’ And to be able to go through it with Chris, who’s as cool as a cucumber, was helpful to me.” With Grand Slam singles victories including three Wimbledons, six U.S. Opens and seven French Opens, Evert knew another actress in the CSI episode ... whom she prefers not to name, given how deeply that performer figures into the mystery. “She trained at the Evert Academy for three years, and I used to hit with her all the time. She was so good, she placed No. 1 at Duke (University), so they had authentic players.” Davenport’s major titles include one each at Wimbledon and the U.S. and Australian Opens, along with an Olympic gold medal. Of seeing her sport dramatized, she says, “Obviously, it’s my whole life, and I love to see it portrayed, but there are times when it’s not completely accurate. While ‘Wimbledon’ is a great movie, it’s not entirely indicative of what life on the tour is like. We have players now who transcend tennis, so hopefully, the sport can take advantage of that. 15

The Triple Crown Showdown Sunday’s opener of the 2nd Virgin Islands Horse Racing Triple Crown at the Ellis Thomas Downs, is all set to go on Sunday, January 13th with six races kicking off at 1 p.m. Race five—the 1st leg of the Triple Crown for the Ellis Thomas Cup—features six horses; two each from Tortola, St. Thomas and St. Croix respectively. Most intriguing will be the matchup between St. Croix’s Slevin, who won the opening leg here during last year’s inaugural Triple Crown and Tortola’s Really Up Town. Really Up Town has beaten Slevin twice in the last two months—over 7 furlongs on St. Croix at the Randall “Doc” James Racetrack and over a mile on Boxing Day at the Ellis Thomas Downs, and he is going for his own Triple against Slevin. This time, they will be meeting over a mile and 1/16th. The question to be answered on Sunday is: Will Slevin end the 2-0 losing skid and improve his record at the Ellis Thomas Downs to 2-1 or lose and fall to 1-2 on Tortola? Joining Slevin and Really Up Town for the Ellis Thomas Downs Cup are: Tortola’s, Good Prospecting—a two time USVI Governors Cup champ, who was third behind the duo in the Boxing Day feature. St. Thomas’ Sweet Sight and Twisted Dream as well as St. Croix’s Gato Paso will make their debut. The second leg of the Triple Crown is scheduled for St Croix on Feb 27 at the Randall “Doc” James track for the Randall “Doc” James Cup. The distance is 11/8th mile. The final leg, the Leroy Gottlieb Classic in St. Thomas, will cover over 1 mile on March 17. Based on the Triple Crown Challenge regulations,
Really Uptown, right, Slevin and Good Prospecting
there’s a guaranteed $10,000 purse for each of the legs. A win is worth 6 points, 4 points to place and 2 points for a show. Unlike last year when Bud White joined the fray and bested Slevin, no other horse will be added to the field during the course of the series. For Sunday’s races, early bird tickets are $12 and can be purchased at Aaron’s Car Rentals, Native Son or from Horse Racing Association members. Race day ticket cost is $15. The Race Card is a follows: Race #1: 6 Furlongs for Class D Horses: Walk the Tiger (St.T), Queteparace Cholito, Power Ten Race #2: 6½ Furlongs for Class C&D Horses: Good Boy Daddy, Drink At Last Call (Stx-debut) and Green Light Special (St.T-debut) Race #3: 1 Mile for Class B&C Horses: Khun Dan (St.T), Gaffalione and Tormento Race #4: 1Mile Open for Fillies & Mares: Blake Lucky Penny, Glorious Memory, Goodeveningofficer (St.T) and Orithyia Race #5: 1 1/16 Miles for Class A Horses – Ellis Thomas Downs Cup: Slevin (Stx), Gato Paso (Stx- debut), Sweet Sight (St.T), Twisted Dream (St. T), Really Up Town and Good Prospecting Race # 6: 6½ Furlongs for Class A & B Horses: Broken Home, News Carrier (St.T) and Bambi Bound (Stx- debut) 17
