This Week’s Feature Story by Jane Bakewell
Soul Sounds with her single, We Gather in This Sanctuary have gone international and she has toured extensively. Another singer claimed as BVI’s own is Ashaala Shanae (pronounced AH-SHAY-LA SHA-NAY), although Brooklyn-born, came to the BVI at 4-yearold and stayed through her high school years before moving to Florida. Through her music she shares the many challenges including abandonment she had as a youth and how she was transformed. Ashaala has shared the stage with such music industry icons as Patti Labelle, Queen Latifah, Chaka Khan and Mary Mary. She has just released her new album, Matters of the Heart. One of the headliners will be the Majestic Gospel Band from St. Kitts, which has been in ministry for over 20 years and produced four albums. MGB is considered one of the top Gospel bands in the Eastern Caribbean region and has opened for international artist Donnie McClurklin. The group’s Change Your Life album released in 2000 was nominated for Marlin Award. Their fourth album, God Has a Message released in 2006 was nominated for the 2007 Album of the Year by the Caribbean Gospel Music Awards. There should be a little something for everyone on Thursday night, so come out and enjoy. Admission is FREE.
Get your praise shoes on and head down to the Festival Grounds on Thursday, July 25th for the annual Gospel Fest – the musical blessing and preliminary opening for the Emancipation Day Celebrations. This year’s line up is a great blend of local talent, a BVI artist now performing in the US and an award-winning band from St. Kitts. Chairman of the Virgin Islands Heritage Month Committee and Event Coordinator, Pastor Melvin Turnbull, feels this year’s celebration will be better than ever. One of the featured groups will be his church’s Praise team, “Joy Praise” representing the Cane Garden Bay Baptist Church. There will also be a local Christian men’s singing group called MOSIC (Men of Standard in Christ) made of youth from all over the BVI. The BVI’s own Deanna Wattley will also be one of the featured soloists. Her two well-known albums Now is the Time and Poised for Greatness, along

Why Are Women So Unfair
Send your questions confidentially to askkoren@live.com or via twitter at @korennorton
Ask Koren Dear Koren, I was dating a young lady and we bought a small house and land together because we thought we were going to have a permanent relationship. However, since we started living together, she has changed and is very demanding and treat me like I'm a boy and not a man. When I told her let's separate, she say I can move if I want to but she not giving up the place to sell and share. Why are women so wicked? –Frustrated
dating and maintaining separate residences. So you have to learn to sustain the love even under different circumstances. Change is a part of life and sometimes you have to flow with it and adapt. Living together is a big adjustment; you are in each other's faces more, you have to be more accountable, share space and establish a house culture. You were both independently running your own lives, now together, you have to share that power and co-exist. I am suggesting that you have an ask-and-tell session. First, ask the woman if she thinks that things have changed since you are living together and pay attention to her responses. Then after you have listened, you can tell her that you are seeing a different side of her; share your observations in a non-accusatory tone. Then you should both discuss what can be done differently. Unless there is more to it than you are saying, both persons being committed to change can make a huge difference.
Dear Frustrated, All women are not wicked just like all men are not dogs so let's not generalize. While I believe you are entitled to half of the property if you made an equal investment, I am not in a position to advise you legally, so I think you should speak with someone who has a legal background and who can inform you of your rights and what your next steps should be. Why are you throwing in the towel so quickly? When you start living with someone, often times you see a different side to them than when you are just

Ticked off @ Ticks I want you to know in my opinion, not all bugs are equal. Some I have decided belong in one of the lower rungs of Dante’s Inferno. These include mosquitoes and ticks – the bloodsuckers of humans and animals alike. Mosquitoes I tackle with the usual armament – spray repellents, aromatic but poisonous coils, citronella candles, and electric zapper rackets. As a last resort I invite my friends the geckos in for a buffet meal or I retreat under a mosquito net. However, ticks take a totally different battle plan and not everything sold across the counter works as some products falsely promise.

Olympus Has Fallen Olympus Has Fallen opens with US President Benjamin Asher (Aaron Eckhart) and his family at Camp David for Christmas, when their motorcade skids on an icy bridge after a blown out tire and goes over the edge. Secret Service agent Mike Banning (Gerard Butler) has to make the tough decision to save the President or sacrifice his wife (Ashley Judd). We fast forward 18 months and Mike is “riding” a desk after the devastating incident left him shut out of the White House, when he failed to save the presidents wife. Moments later we see enemy forces invading the White House and the surrounding area with high-powered guns. Covert terrorist disguised as tourist know that the military response time for protecting the White House is 15 minutes, and are able to take over the White House before the troops arrive. This is not good news for President Asher or the other high ranking officials, who have been taken hostage. The eading terrorist Kang (Rick Yune) wants the United States to stand down from shielding South Korea, and he's prepared to use the president's feelings for his son Connor (Finley Jacobsen) to accomplish this. That’s if they can find him hidden somewhere in the White House first. The terrorists, however, have failed to reckon on the fighting skills of Secret Service agent Mike Banning. Mike survives the initial assault on 1600 Pennsylvania Avenue, and he arrives in time to take out a few of the extras and battle his way into the

Kang pursues a secret code to detonate nuclear plants that will spell doom for the homeland should he possess it. Mike races against the clock to rescue the president before he is tortured for the codes that could bring an end to American civilization. 13

Necessary Changes in USA’s Necessary Roughness It’s a hard-knock life out there for scripted TV shows these days. With increasing pressure from unscripted shows, video games, the Internet and the economy, getting and especially keeping a show on the air is not only a creative but a financial challenge. But every now and then, the stars align, and you get just what you want. For Callie Thorne of USA’s sports-psychologist dramedy Necessary Roughness, which began its third season in June, that’s a huge, colorful new office set, boasting funky modern furnishings and shiny white floors that reflect light back into the face. It’s home to V3 (short for Caesar’s famous declaration “Veni, vidi, vici” — “I came, I saw, I conquered”), the New York City sports agency/global marketing firm that has just hired her character, Dr. Dani Santino. “I call it the magic castle,” she says in the show’s Atlanta production offices during a break in filming. “There are so many different rooms and areas to shoot in. Starting the seventh episode, I don’t even think we’ve actually used every piece of this set yet. Because, all of a sudden, we’ll be doing a scene, and I’ll be, like, ‘Where’d this come from?’ ” Meanwhile, one of the show’s other regular characters, New York Hawks football player Terrence “TK” King (Mehcad Brooks) — who follows therapist Dani
to become a V3 client — is embarking on a new venture of his own. The longtime ladies’ man may finally be settling down. Kate Miner appears in the recurring role of model Sheera Kane, who captures TK’s eye. “We meet because of V3,” says Brooks, “because we’re in the same branding agency. So, there’s some love in the air, and there’s some sex in the bed. It becomes complicated, as all relationships do, but it definitely starts off as a wonderful thing, and the love blossoms. “There was a lot of chemistry between Kate and I, and we just clicked. We have a lot in common in person. We went to the same college and knew some of the same people. It’s just weird.”

A Step On ‘Project Podium’ Thus, the idea of conceiving “Project Podium” – a goal to obtain a medal in a major championships within the next 5-years in competitions where the BVI has never medaled. As the 8th IAAF World Youth Championships unfolded in Donetsk, Ukraine, July 10-14, there were some visible signs of progress. Three athletes—Tarika “Tinker Bell” Moses, Nelda Huggins and Jonel Lacey—advanced to the semifinals of the 400 and 200m events respectively. Taylor Hill tied for third in the 100m with the same time as a Czech Republic runner, who got the nod in a photo finish. We’ve never had that total advancing combined since we began participating in 2003. The came the Girls Medley Relay, with Hill, Huggins, Moses and Lakeisha “Mimi” Warner, who automatically advanced to the territory’s first final by finishing behind Canada. Lacey who was sick and could not contest her 200m final replaced Warner in the final. I knew then we’d win a medal. On Sunday, the team won the silver medal—just eight months after “Project Podium” had been conceived. With over 1500 athletes from 174 countries competing from six IAAF Regions in the championships, I was able to look down the medal charts and see tied for #25, British Virgin Islands. Only 37 of the 174 had athletes walking off with medals. While I was congratulating the athletes on this achievement, I had to run to my charts to see who’s in the pool and could be representing in 2015 at the next championships in Cali, Colombia. Today is our turn to welcome the entire delegation home and congratulate them on their achievement. In the process, we need to ensure that the BVI Athletics Association is adequately supported to continue.

If a sport is to be successful, I firmly believe its leadership much have a vision for it, where they want to lead it and develop a plan they can execute. It was almost eight months ago on November 28, 2012 on Tortola and Dec 1 on Virgin Gorda, I met with coaches, athletes and parents along with BVI Athletics Association General Secretary Delva Thomas. The meeting’s aim was to identify all the 10-14 year old athletes on Track Clubs who would be 1617-years olds between 2015-2018. By this exercise, we identified every contender between 2013 and 2019 currently in athletics training and aligned them with future youth and Jr. competitions that target their ages—such as the IAAF World Youth Championships, IAAF World Jr. Championships, Pan Am Jr. Championships, Commonwealth Youth Games and Youth Olympic Games. I’d noticed that we were winning medals at the annual Carifta Games and the Central American and Caribbean Jr. Championships. However, unlike our fellow Caribbean neighbors, our athletes who had bagged medals at these championships, weren’t advancing to semifinals, finals and winning medals like their regional peers. 17
