Mr. & Miss Jr. BVI Current Mister Jr. BVI Shemar Trim and Miss Jr. BVI Dje’Moyia Smith and will pass their crowns on to the 2017 winners this weekend at the show themed ‘Culture, Glamour & Intelligence to be seen.’ Up for the titles this year are 17-23 year-old contestants Khadija Liburd, Rosa Industrious, Kenya Matthews, Anondah Hodge, Yohance Smith and Shamoy Davis. The winning pair will receive an education grant sponsored by the Ministry of Education, plus a variety of cash, trips and electronics. Expect to see the contestants compete in the usual pageant categories including introduction, swimwear, talent, eveningwear, and impromptu questions and answers. The show also has a special “black and white” segment that is always a crowd favorite. To keep the crowd pleased between segments, the show will feature special performances by the Too Smooth band throughout the evening.
Lime ... “to hang around idly” or “to go out on the town.” Source: The Dictionary of Virgin Islands English Creole by the late educator and historian Lito Valls. The Limin’ Times brings you all the news about when and where to “lime” in the British Virgin Islands.
In the interests of opening the pageant to as many contestants as possible, the show welcomes students and non-students alike, “they just have to be of good character,” explained Lena Thomas, one of the committee members, in a recent television appearance. The show is organized by the East End/Long Look Festival Committee, which formerly held a Miss East End/Long Look pageant, but changed gears in recent years. They now hope that the show’s relatively young contestants can gain some experience on stage and in the spotlight to help them compete in the high-profile Miss BVI show in the future. Catch the show this Saturday at 8pm at the Sir Rupert Briercliffe Hall. General admission tickets are $25 in advance (available for purchase at J & C Trading, ZBVI, CCT or Caliente & Sweet in East End) or $30 at the door. Kids under 12 pay $15. VIP seats are also available for $50.

Beat the Heat Between the high humidity, the drop in winds and the everpresent sun, there’s no doubt about it: island summers can be brutal. As I gear up for my least favorite weather of the year, I thought it’d be a good idea to compile some of my tried and true methods for cooling off. 1. Hit the beach… Not only is the beach a great place to enjoy a cool sea soak, but since the BVI beaches are nearly all lined with sea grapes and other trees, there’s also bound to be a shady spot to sit and enjoy what breeze there is to be had. Carry a cooler full of drinks and you’re set for the day. 2 …Or the pool. If you’ve got a few dollars to spare in your pocket, you could opt for the sandfree version and spend a day by the pool. There may not be as many pools as beaches around here, but those who don’t want to worry about watching waves or think a swim-up bar is the bee’s knees still have several to choose from. 3. Catch a movie. If you don’t have air conditioning at home, a long, hot day in the house can seem like the last thing you want to do. Break up the day with a matinee at the cinema, where you can sit in the dark, chilly theater while you watch one of the latest summer releases. 4. Take your time with the shopping. This might just be me, but if it’s a really hot evening, I love getting the week’s grocery run out of the way. As long as the post-work rush has come and gone, you’re not likely to face many other shoppers, so you can take your time in the cooled aisles, or, if you’re really heated, the open-air cases of dairy foods. Obviously, shopping is not as InstagramLimin’Times Entertainment Gude

worthy as 1 or 2 on the list, but hey, we all have to eat, right? 5. Have a cold treat. I know we all scream for ice cream, but if you’re trying to avoid junk food like I am, frozen fruit can be a nice alternative. Pineapple, mangoes, berries, papaya and other fruits freeze nicely and taste great on their own. If you want to get a little fancier, you can make your own fruit popsicles. Just grind up your fruits in a blender, pour into some inexpensive plastic molds and put them in the freezer overnight.

Okja Okja is a pig that anyone can love. A genetically engineered sow the size of a wooly mammoth, Okja was raised by a Korean farmer and his granddaughter, Mija (An Seo Hyun). The product of years of scientific research by a giant agriculture firm headquartered in New York City and led by the crass and clueless executive Lucy Mirando (Tilda Swinton), Okja and nine other genetically modified piglets are sent to bucolic settings around the world. The initiative is part of a ten-year marketing plan designed to demonstrate the kinder side of this multi-national corporate giant. For Mija, life with Okja is idyllic. The two wander through mountainous landscapes like a girl and a beloved pet, running through meadows and swimming in lakes. All that ends on Okja’s tenth birthday when members of the Mirando corporation arrive at the farm to reclaim Okja. The aim of the group, led by a cynical celebrity vet (Jake Gyllenhaal), is no less than commercial exploitation. For ten years, Okja has been Mija’s only friend, and although she is helpless to stop the group from taking her precious companion away, Mija hatches a plan to rescue her. Gathering all the money from her piggy bank, she leaves her grandfather and travels to Seoul. Mija has never been to a city before, but she is clever and resourceful and finds her way to the company’s Seoul office. Here she discovers Okja being loaded into a truck to be shipped to the firm’s US research lab. Mija takes up the firm’s offer to accompany Okja to New York as part of the company’s PR campaign, but she is in fact assisting members of the Animal Liberation Front, a motley crew headed by Jay, its inept but
well-meaning leader (played by Paul Dano). Knowing that the corporation’s intent is not as benign as it claims, the “ALF” attaches a camera to Okja in in order to expose the corporation’s sinister plans. Once in New York, the feisty and determined young heroine continues her efforts to rescue Okja with disturbing and ultimately surprising consequences. When I started watching Okja, a Netflix produced movie, I didn’t know what to expect. Would it be a children’s movie? Not really – some of the scenes would be disturbing for very young children. Or would it be a science fiction fantasy? Maybe a little. But I was won over by this beautifully made movie directed by the well-known South Korean movie director Bong Joon Ho. Okja a combination of CGI (computer generated imagery) and a full-sized model was amazingly lifelike and blended perfectly into every scene. But it was the theme that won me over. The love of a young girl and an amazing creature wins over corporate greed any day. And just maybe, you’ll think twice about ordering those barbecue pork ribs. 11

Money and Marriage Dear Koren, I’m worried about my financial future with my fiancé. I work a steady job with a good salary and he works on projects so he might get five jobs one year and make more than me, or just three jobs a year. Is it wrong for me to be worried about money, especially since he has two children and his ex relies on him so much? How am I going to be sure we have enough for us to start a family and build a home? He doesn’t like to talk and tells me that I worry too much. –Nervous bride-to-be Dear bride-to-be, You are doing the right thing to try to talk to your fiancé about money! Finances cause a lot of problems in marriages. Talking about it and making certain decisions before the wedding can eliminate some potential issues. I understand you are nervous because you want everything to go well. Let’s see how we can change that nervousness to confidence. Here are five important things to discuss with your fiancé: 1. Having a joint account. It is important that both of you put funds into an account that can be used for the running of your shared home. After you create a working budget, this account should have enough to cover those expenses and a few extras. 2. Spending money individually. You both should have your individual accounts so he can help his children and you can do whatever you want. You should decide together on a spend-
ing limit, however, with purchases over a certain amount discussed beforehand. 3. Long-term savings and investment. There should be an account for savings for an emergency or retirement. If you want a home, then the down payment can be saved here, etc. 4. Debt. This is a ticklish one, but if either of you have a lot of debt, it should be disclosed before the marriage. Also, try as much as you can to save for things instead of borrowing. Even credit cards can be tricky and hard to repay, so minimize their use. 5. Children. These adorable creatures require a lot of money. School fees, clothes, doctor’s visits, and one day, they will probably want to go to college. So decide how many of the little dear ones you both are comfortable having and how you will finance them. Maybe if you and he have different spending styles and he is more laid back, you should be the one to manage the money. It takes a lot of responsibility to ensure that the finances are in order: being able to resist the temptation to buy things for the wrong reasons, prioritizing purchases and knowing when to buy what. Of course you can splurge every now and again, but that should be the exception rather than the rule. As a couple, ensure that you live within your means with a suitable budget and always, always, keep communicating openly.

Making medal history The BVI has been participating in the Commonwealth Games since 1990 and the Youth Commonwealth Games since they began in 2000, but in all those years had never earned a medal. Well, the drought is now over! On his sixth attempt, Discus Thrower Djimon Gumbs overcame his nerves and became the first BVI athlete to earn a medal at any Commonwealth Games when he launched the platter that landed a bronze medal in Nassau, Bahamas last Thursday afternoon. Then on Sunday, when the games wrapped up, Beyonce DeFreitas became the first female medalist, earning silver in the 200m, in the competition that catered to 16-17 year old athletes from six regions and 70 countries across the British Commonwealth. After fouling his opening attempt, Gumbs, a double Carifta Games silver medalist in the Discus Throw and Shot Put, secured bronze with a 56.24m (184’6½”) throw. Twin brother Diamante finished sixth with his first 50m throw, finally setting for 50.67m (166’3”). “First off, I’m giving God the praise for making me accomplish this medal,” Djimon said. “Going into the competition, of course, there were nerves on the first throw, which I fouled, but my coach told me to relax and I did what I has to do.” His medal throw came in the fourth round, and says it means a lot. “Winning a medal at this stage makes me feel that all the hard work pays off and no matter how Limin’Times Entertainment Gude
difficult it could be at times, I always pull through,” he noted. “It inspires me to push toward my goals and never give up.” Like at the Carifta Games, Djimon said he was happy to have his twin Diamante competing with him and he was proud when he broke 50m not once, but four times. “He was working really hard to accomplish breaking 50m and to see him do it three times back-to-back, made my heart warm,” Djimon said. “It was such a nice experience having someone to talk to.” Diamante said it didn’t really hit him until after the competition that he had thrown 50m. “It feels amazing because I’ve been working on this for a long time and I have realized that I can do it, and will continue to work hard,” he said. Diamante was fourth in the Shot Put with 16.66m (50’8”), besting Djimon’s 16.03m (52’7”) for the first time. DeFreitas earned her medal after running 23.88 seconds, .04 off her personal best. She opened with 25.01 to win her heat and ran 24.13 in the semis. “It’s really special, because at Carifta, I was hoping to medal and that didn’t happen,” DeFreitas said. “I worked really hard and then got my medal at these games. My goal was to execute my race properly and get a personal best but that didn’t happen, but I still came out with a medal.” Javelin Thrower Arianna Hayde upped her National Youth Record to 44.73m (146’9”) and placed fifth. *Photos by Kermit Taylor, Bahamas Athletics 14
