Roundup Chris Klein’s Hybrid Jams New Orleans native Chris Klein’s musical performances include a bit of just about everything. He describes himself as a “multi-instrumentalist,” no exaggeration as one set can include the singer songwriter playing harmonica, flute and two different saxophones. Chris is also at home with a variety of musical genres, having either played live or recorded with jazz, reggae, soul and funk groups like Winds of Change, The Revealers, Soul Project (NOLA), The Dirty Boogaloo, and the Funk Revival Orchestra. He also has a special love of Latin music, and has played with Ya Ya Sol, and Rene Escovedo’s Grupo Festejo; as well as with rock groups like The Latelys and The Wicked Mercies. A Bohemian at heart, Chris doesn’t limit himself to music, and also loves to paint, draw

and create digital visual art – he’s even used skin as a canvas as a tattoo artist. Chris says that especially in his home city, his art makes him feel connected to “a significant history.” “When I take out my instrument and put it together and go play music… I fulfill a little tiny bit of history,” Chris says in a video diary. “Music is my outlet, my source for creation.” When Chris comes to the Caribbean, he usually brings along drummer Tom Chute and guitarist Don Williams. Together as the Chris Klein Power Trio, their sets feature what Chris calls “jazzbluessoulfonque.” The trio plans to bring this musical mélange to at Myett’s in Cane Garden Bay this weekend, with sets on Friday the 3rd and Saturday, 4th at 7pm.

I Don’t Want Son To Become A Policeman Dear Koren, How do I persuade my son to not become a policeman? I think he is only doing it because a few years ago he lost a favorite family member as a result of a crime. He is young and talented and I know doing something out of anger is not a good reason and I think it’s a dangerous job. – Concerned mom Dear concerned mom, I think it is more important (and useful) to help him clarify whether policing is really his calling and passion rather than persuading him against a career simply because it makes you uncomfortable. I know you care, that is really evident, but please understand you cannot protect someone from their dreams. What’s more, it’s possible the more you try to convince him not to do it, the harder he will push for it because people tend to love challenges. Many persons have gotten involved in careers because of some precipitating factor. Being the survivor of a crime is in many instances a motivator to want to do something about it. If you watched someone you love die from something, you can develop a passion to eradicate that thing. It’s not just an interest, but a burning desire. That is what motivation is all about; deep passion can be born from deep pain. It is better for him to become a legitimate law enforcement officer than to become a rouge vigilante. I think you should talk with him about the pros and cons of his decision to better ascertain if he understands the risks involved. You could also set up a meeting with him and someone who has been a cop for years so that they can explain to him how it actually works and that way he makes
an informed decision. From the training process to the exposure to violent criminals, being a police officer is not easy. But it brings with it the satisfaction of knowing that you are making the streets a safer place. One gets satisfaction from upholding the law and from helping people who are in trouble. Listen to your son’s explanations and listen to his heart. If you truly think he can’t handle it, you can let him know that, but you must accept that the final decision is not yours. Remember, you can love and support him even if you’d rather he take a different path

Opening Day (Un)preparedness challenge. Most of us know the game. We know the rules and what to do and what not to do, so once we practice, we’ll know our positions on the court.” When asked what they’ll have to do to bounce back, Maduro-Glasgow said: “Practice. Practice. Practice,” she said. “That’s all I can say.” Sunday’s opener for defending champions Vincy in the BVI Cricket Association Twenty 20 league saw them pulling out a victory over Road Town Wholesale, who was promoted to the Premier Division after winning Division I last year. While Vincy won, the lack of practice crept into the conversation. “Well, I must first congratulate the boys, they came out here and won,” Vincy captain Brent DeFreitas said. “We even not training but the boys played some good cricket.” Regarding his own performance in the match, which saw him giving up a few sixes, DeFreitas didn’t mince words about his own fitness level. “Well Sportsman, for a man like me who’s not training, I must give myself credit still, because to come out here and bowl four overs is not an easy thing when you’re not training,” he explained. “You’ve got to be fit to play this game. This game is a fast paced game.” With other team sports on the horizon as part of the annual crowded spring schedule, in season competition will be the norm for many.
Covering sports for more than three decades is surely an adventure. While the years change some things remain the same. For example, you learn a lot about how seriously players take their team’s sport by how well prepared they are on opening day. It seems that while many of our sportsmen and women love sports, follow their favorite professional team(s) preparing for the season by practicing and conditioning their bodies, those practices don’t apply to their own thinking. That’s only for professionals. During opening day for Volleyball on Saturday and Cricket on Sunday, one theme that resonated across both sports was that of a lack of preparatory practice for the season and in particular, its first game. The mantra seems to be just show up and play baby!! For example, following their opening game, Tygenica Maduro-George said her team had, which last played in November during the Dept. of Youth Affairs and Sports Industrial Volleyball League, lacked practice. “Practice makes perfect,” she said after her School Them team were schooled in straight sets by Vixens, 20-25, 19-25 and 22-25. The Vixens dominated in each set, even though School Them ran off nine unanswered points in the third set. “If everybody comes together, we’ll know where we are playing and what we are doing, that was the Limin’Times Entertainment Gude
