Spreading Love at Christmas Looking for a way to connect with the true reason for the Christmas season? So were many people in singer and music producer Lincoln Ward’s circle. “People requested it so it seemed like a good time,” he said of The Reason for Christmas, the Christmas album he recorded with his wife Chantal Flax-Ward in just a few short weeks. The album has 12 tracks, including an intro/ Christmas prayer written by Chantal, and the album’s title track, which the couple wrote together. Another original song on the album is “Christmas in Paradise,” written by Lincoln and fellow VI musician Mackenzie “B’More” Baltimore. The track also features B’More, who Lincoln has worked with before. Lincoln said that “putting Christ back in Christmas” was the guiding principal behind choosing the tracks that appear on the album, which is dominated by gospel-influenced favorites like “The First Noel,” “Who Would Imagine a King,” “Mary Did You Know,” “Angels We

Have Heard on High,” and “Do You Hear What I Hear.” Positivity rules the record, even for the not-so-spiritual songs on The Reason for Christmas. “The songs that aren’t necessarily Christian songs, they’re still filled with love,” he said. Although Lincoln has been recording other artists for the last 8 years at Beatlink Productions, he said that working with his wife was a little different. “We had a lot of fun doing it together but I think she might have been frustrated getting feedback from me,” Lincoln said. He added that the experience helped strengthen their union. “We’re doing everything hand in hand. It’s a good partnership,” he said. You can find The Reason for Christmas at OneMart or at the couple’s newly opened Lower Main Street gift shop élan Gift Boutique for $20. If the holiday season already has you feeling too hectic, you can inbox Lincoln at his Facebook page Lincoln Ward Music and he’ll help you set up payment and drop off of the album.

“I’m Just a Cat Ready to be Adopted” At one time there was a public service commercial on PBS that promoted the adoption of children. It melted my heart. These adorable young children, smiling endearingly at the camera, had a simple message, “I’m just a kid ready to be adopted.” But with two kids of my own, adoptions in my family in recent years has been limited to cats, and over the years we have adopted – or more often than not, been adopted by – a string of needy felines. When the kids were small, we would go to the Animal Shelter, and pick out a cute little kitten in need of a home. These have ranged from sweet and cuddly to felines from hell. We’ve had the black and white Domino, and blue and yellow-eyed Rocket; as well as a black pantherlike cat named Stokely (named after you know who). Notable among them were the diabolical Katie – and a brother and sister team with nearly identical white and strawberry colored fur that we named Ginger and Roger. Buddy walked into our house five years ago. Emaciated, with a bent tail, torn ear and eyes in need of a good wipe, he was an animal that only a mother could love. Well, maybe not. I told my husband, “don’t feed him, or he’ll stay.” Naturally Alan fed him, and he returned to our doorstep. Again, and again. Eventually he walked into the house and plopped himself down Limin’Times Entertainment Gude
under the dinner table. Obviously he wasn’t going away, so a tune up at the vet was called for and we took him down the road for shots and a neutering. After another week or two of constant meals only the most select cat food was good enough for our former stray – he plumped out, his fur turned silky and his demeanor became one of undying gratitude. He followed us around like a puppy dog, never more than a few inches from one or the other of our ankles. He was both a lap cat and a foot cat, a contented creature who did not want to live on the streets ever again. So Buddy became the king of the roost – that is until Lucy showed up at our doorstep last month. Emaciated like her predecessor, she had white fur and erratic gray markings – another stray who had set her heart on adopting a family. She must have scoped out the neighborhood and saw two soft-hearted suckers who couldn’t say no. Again, a trip to Dr. Laura’s for shots and worming turned a skinny little stray into a plump and loyal feline. Adopting may be good for the soul, but I have put the word out that any future adoptees should try a house down the road. Buddy and Lucy are not about to share their people. 6

Reconnecting After a Split Someone once said, the course of true love never did run smoothly. Maybe you were in a rough patch, and you said things that you didn’t mean or things that could be misinterpreted. Or perhaps you tried to defend yourself while she was expecting an apology and the whole situation got out of hand. In the heat of the moment, someone ended the relationship. Whatever the case, in retrospect, you realize that you set in motion the chain of events that led to this unfortunate end. Deep down inside you know this is the best relationship you have ever had, you are stronger together and that person means more to you than anyone in this world. What do you do now? Here are five ways to build a bridge across the chasm and reclaim the love that was so fulfilling: • Apologize and take responsibility. You can give reasons but no excuses. Your partner needs to know that you are genuinely sorry for what you did and saying why you did it helps you to identify your triggers and helps your partner to see the bigger picture. • Figure out what could be done differently next time. Your partner might be suspicious of your turn-around and trust between you might be broken. You will need to offer some reassurance that you will do your part to ensure that this does not happen again. Having a plan helps. • Identify what lessons can be learnt. When you were both screaming at the top of your lungs you said things and behaved in ways that
probably angered, surprised or shocked each other. Offer some clarification and share what you learned from the experience that could potentially strengthen you as a couple or as individuals. • Be genuine about what you intend to change. Do not make promises that you cannot keep just to get the person back. Be honest and realistic about what you can change and what is challenging for you so that your partner gets an intimate peek inside you and has realistic expectations. • Flowers, candy, dates and cards go a long way. Peace offerings help your cause. Hallmark writers have the words that say exactly what you are thinking, all in a more eloquent form. The gift has to be something that you know your partner likes though. That activity he is always begging for…hint hint, or that teddy bear that you just know will put a smile on her face. I’m not advocating here that you make yourself a sacrificial lamb just to keep somebody; the point is more about knowing that you messed up and that what you have is worth saving. “I’m sorry,” “I love you,” “I made a mistake,” “I was wrong,” and “I will try harder,” are all phrases that carry serious weight at a time like this. No relationship is perfect as there are no perfect people, but sometimes in life, you find a partner who makes your soul sing. Such a relationship is worth fighting for. Send your questions to askkoren@live.com or follow us on twitter @korennorton and a response will be provided 11

Almost Christmas Almost Christmas may not be very original but otherwise it’s a near perfect holiday film filled with love and laughter. It shows what happens when people who love each other, even if they don’t see each other outside the holidays, gather to celebrate. In Almost Christmas, family patriarch Walter (played by Danny Glover) is a retired mechanic who lost his wife a year ago. He invites his four children to their old family home to spend the first Christmas since his wife passed. As you know with so many personalities under one roof there’s bound to be tension. Younger daughter Rachel (Gabrielle Union), a recent divorcee who is trying to reinvent herself by attending law school, and Cheryl (Kimberly Elise), the overachieving big sister, seem to have more issues than the family can handle, and Cheryl spends the movie looking for – and pointing out – her younger sister’s faults. The brothers Christian (Romany Malco) and Evan (Jessie T. Usher) seem to be getting along great and don’t pay any attention to their sisters’ ongoing drama. Also in the mix for the family’s five-day gathering is Aunt May (Mo’Nique), sister to Walter’s late wife and a former back up singer for rock stars. Aunt May tries to make a festive feeling by cooking the family a meal, but when she serves up foods from a variety of different cultures instead of their traditional family holiday foods, the kids don’t take it well. Talking about meals, Walter tries various times in the movie to make his wife’s famous sweet potato pie, but he just can’t seem to get it right.
At the family football game, Evan’s friend Eric (DC Young Fly) who has a thing for Aunt May, takes the opportunity to let her know how he feels. She doesn’t miss a beat in shutting him down. Cheryl’s husband Lonnie (J.B. Smoove), a former pro basketball player who can’t stop talking about his career, is also quite a character. When he tries to fix a malfunctioning roof-top Santa decoration he succeeds, but only for a short second, then the ornament’s head blows off with Lonnie falling of the roof soon after. Lonnie also has a wandering eye and ends up messing around with the store clerk Jasmine (Kerri Hilson). When Rachel finds out she invites Jasmine to the family’s Christmas dinner. Oh boy! This sounds like it’s gonna be messy. At the Christmas dinner all the secrets come out. One was pretty big and catches everyone except Evan completely by surprise. To find out what happens next and how the family makes it through those five days you will have to see the movie. Almost Christmas is now playing at UP’s Cineplex. 13
