BVI DanceFest 2019 The BVI Children’s DanceFest has always been a favorite of the BVI Community and has been charming audiences for the last 18 years with a prodigious amount of talent. Sponsored by the BVI Dance School, the vibrant show features ballet, pointe, tap, hip hop and jazz. Professional dancer and instructor, Sandy is thrilled by the level of accomplishment of these fledgling performers. Sandy, the school’s director, started the BVI Dance School over 20 years ago, and has been teaching dance to islanders ever since. A dancer from the age of eight, Sandy had a dance school in Florida before moving to the BVI. When she arrived in Tortola, she saw a need for more cultural activities for the region’s children, founding the dance school and bringing

Spotlight
Stella Maze Born Athnia Wendy Jack, this British footwear visionary hails from Road Town, Tortola. Growing up in a family of fishermen, Stella (as she is now professionally known) spent most of her youth navigating the shimmery blue waters of the BVI assisting with the family business. Her mother was a highly sought-after seamstress known for her lavish one-of-a-kind pieces and elegant stitching. Stella loved watching her mom transform garments into stunning dresses. When she was 18, she joined the army where she would sketch to occupy her free time. It was while she was enlisted that her creative abilities and appreciation for fashion got cultivated. Shortly after she returned home from serving in the army, she was ready to extend beyond the sandy beaches of her native Tortola and her excitement for the arts and entrepreneurial spirit led her to New York City. After assembling the right relationships and an education in shoe production, Stella established her label, Stella Hues. In February 2014, the esteemed Mercedes-Benz Fashion Week New York recognized Stella Hues’ “Nicola” over-the-knee, nubuck leather boots as one of the best gladiator styles to hit the runway for Fashion Week 2015 online. The signature “bleu bottom” heels received high-profile recognition and praise. Harper’s Bazaar Singapore featured Stella Hues on “The Power List” In their August 2015 print issue, solidifying the rising Italian shoe house as “one to watch”. ries of the Virgin Islands, and a nod to classic British influence. Inspired by the mystique, translucent blues of the Caribbean waters, each shoe is finished with patented hues of blue on the inner and outer sole. Handcrafted in Italy, the label represents class, edge and sophistication for those who fancy quality. Stella Maze of Stella Hues At Fashion Footwear Association of New York’s 2011 tradeshow, Stella became acquainted with footwear expert and Giraffe Walk woven shoe owner, David Aaron Sinskin. Dazzled by Stella’s ambitious attitude, David decided to mentor the budding designer. For two years David took her on as an understudy in technical design, occasionally he commissioned her to design for his label and high profile clients. To further her quest for knowledge, Stella went to study the luxury aspect of the business with one of Italy’s foremost shoe designers and makers at Maestro Factory. Last year (October 2018), when actress Tracee Ellis Ross wore Stella’s chic shoe sandal boot hybrid to the pre-American Music Awards, the fashion world went into a frenzy. Stella later made the list of top black owned luxury footwear designers you should know. To see Stella’s collection, please visit www.stellahues.com or to contact her via email, info@stellahues.com. Cupcakes & Cocktails Chapter 5: Courage
After a long week Liz was ready to leave her office and head home and enjoy her weekend relaxing. Just as she was about to log off her computer, Daniel, her assistant knocked on her door and told her that he would like to show her something that totally wasn’t work related. Liz knew Daniel liked to watch funny videos online, so she happily told him to come in. While in the middle of their giggle after her third video, there was a knock on her door and when she looked up it was Michael. Michael would randomly show up at Liz’s job uninvited and unannounced. While the females at his office thought that it was romantic, Liz didn’t like it because Michael was far from being romantic. It was his way of popping up hoping to catch some random man there with her. Liz and Michael had just gotten in the house and before she could even sit Michael was in her face about being there with the man at work. “First of all MF, don’t ever come back to my job unless I give you permission to,” Liz told him. “Matter of fact, don’t come period! I’m not a child, I don’t need you checking up on me,” she continued. All the while Michael just stood there watching her as if she had gone mad. “It look like this girl had lost her damn mind challenging me lately,” he thought to himself. “Listen, I don’t know who you think you’re talking to but please come back to your senses fast,” he said out loud. He moved across the room and grabbed Liz by her arms and pinned her against the wall while telling her, “Watch how you speak to me and I will come wherever you are, because you are my property. Whoever whispering in your ears, I suggest you tell them to stop because Limin’Times Entertainment Guide
all you’re doing is embarrassing yourself. Walking around here shouting at me like you lost your mind.” Liz stopped squirming in his grip, looked at him and grabbed the vase next to them and connected it to his head. While he was on the floor she opened the door and pushed him out while shouting at him to come back when he became a real man. 7am Saturday morning Liz had just rolled over just as the doorbell was ringing. Not wanting to get up, but thinking it could be someone important, she grabbed her robe, ran downstairs and opened her door to see the devil, Michael outside standing with her favorite flowers and some food that she assumed was breakfast. ********** “What are you doing going through my things Sarah?” Brian asked her again. When he saw the tears in her eyes, he got concerned and bent down in front of his wife. Looking at her hand, he saw the pictures she was holding, and he smiled remembering that day but quickly wiped the smile from his face. He took his photos, put them back and grabbed her hand and walked her out of his closet. “Why do you hate me?” Sarah asked her husband. “Why would you ask me that?” he responded as if he was buying time to make up a story in his head. “Don’t play dumb Brian, you’re never home, you don’t answer when I call”. “I don’t hate you, do you think I can put you in a house like this by being home all the time. You know how many women would love to live in a mansion like this?” Brian asked his wife. Sarah looked at him and….. 12
Who loves an introvert?
13
5. They are more independent. Introverts don’t need a large group to be able to get things done and they often prefer working on their own. This is quite useful when something needs to be done and they are not many persons to do it…give an introvert the job. So if you are an extrovert, don’t minimize the impact of an introvert to create balance and add perspective. If you are an introvert, don’t feel badly or try to force yourself to be outgoing to fit in. Accept yourself for who you are and acknowledge that you bring something to the table that might otherwise not be there were it not for you.

Sometimes persons are made to feel as if something is wrong with them just because they like to be alone, dislike noise and crowds and tend not to be too sociable. A person should feel comfortable being himself or herself, even if he or she is a bit more reserved than others. Introverts are often misunderstood but the truth is that they bring value to any group where they find themselves, because of their unique characteristics. Five benefits of having an introvert as part of your team are: 1. They make better listeners. Introverts are not as outgoing as extroverts and are hardly the life of the party, so they are often quiet and more interested in listening than talking. This is a good quality that makes others feel close to them. 2. They tend to be less disruptive. Individuals with this personality tend to shy away from drama and confusion, preferring to go unnoticed or be alone. They rarely initiate aggressive behavior and are usually peacemakers because they dislike conflict. 3. They are often creative. Many writers, musicians and other artistic types are introverted. They can focus on a task and peel off all the layers or practice for a long time without being easily distracted. 4. They are observant. Being quiet, watchful and existing on the fringes, gives an introvert the opportunity to notice things that might pass other persons. This is why they are often good at understanding human nature.

Runners’ Tales From Conquering ‘The Beast’ Every participant in Saturday’s Hauteville 5K Series tour stop in Paraquita Bay, including champion Julius Farley, had a tale to tell about the segment 2.5 miles into the 3.1 mile race, fondly known as ‘The Beast’. This particular run on the HLSCC campus is deceptive. Those who regularly participate in the annual College Classic Series in the fall, know the first two miles of the course very well and where the inclines are, to gauge their pace, even returning on the homestretch, which they’re surprised has an incline. The other segment on the south campus, well, that’s literally a different beast. It’s off road and rocky, with an elevation much higher than its northern counterpart. Just when runners climb out of the rugged terrain and think they’re about to descend, they discover, or, they’re told by the race official stationed in the area, “you have to go up that incline.” “Who would design a race with a hill towards the end?” asked veteran runner Zebalon McLean afterwards. “Over by the Marine Center, there is where it caught me a bit because I was tired,” noted Farley who won the race in 20 minutes and 43 seconds. “I got tired going up the hill, but anyway, I ended up victorious, so I must say thanks for that.” Second placer Jermaine Ricketts said he hadn’t been training but tried his best. “It was a bit challengLimin’Times Entertainment Guide
ing around the Marine side, the loop around there,” he noted. “But I did it. I tore it down.” Debutant, Tuneisha Johnson, who recently joined the road racing circuit and finished in 31:06, said it was challenging but it was a good race. “It caught me off guard when we had to loop by the Marine Center, because I was like ok, we got the first hill, then there was a surprise hill,” she reflected. “But, I made it to the end without stopping and I’m very proud of myself.” Third overall was Katrina Lindsay who admitted it was a tough race. “There was nice weather, a good group of people as always and I felt really good today, so I’m really happy with the race,” she said. Road racing action will continue July 6, with the Hauteville 5K Series finale in Road Town. The Ceres Juices 10K Series follows with stops in Road Town, Carrot Bay, Beef Island and the Prison Break. The races are a tune up for the November 30, Deloitte-Ogier BVI Half Marathon. In between, there will be the HLSCC/Mourant College Classic Series, which kicks off on September 14 and runs through November 2. Get out, get involved and stay healthy in the process. 14
