Rock-A-Boogie with Mitch Woods Blues and boogie woogie fans have no excuse to miss out on Mitch Woods’ latest stop in the BVI, as the high energy jump, jive and wailing happens all week long between Road Town and Cane Garden Bay. The Brooklyn native credits his taste for the sounds of the 40s and 50s rock and roll music to a childhood visit to the home of a boogie-woogie piano player. “It really hit me,” he said. The experience spurred him to take up piano lessons at age 11 and, as a teen, to begin putting together bands to perform live around his college town of Buffalo. Mitch cites early R&B pioneer Louis Jordan as another of his primary musical influences – both in terms of sound and stage presence. “He was the bridge between swing and rock and roll,” Mitch says of Louis. “He would do a five or six piece band, get a lot of power out of that.”
Lime ... “to hang around idly” or “to go out on the town.” Source: The Dictionary of Virgin Islands English Creole by the late educator and historian Lito Valls. The Limin’ Times brings you all the news about when and where to “lime” in the British Virgin Islands.
Those now-classic boogiewoogie and swing music influences are just the jumping off point for Mitch, who, along with his band the Rocket 88s, incorporates elements of New Orleans rhythm and blues, powerful piano, and humorous lyrics in the style he calls “rocka-boogie.” The band’s album, Steady Date, was a regional hit and earned them opening slots for stars of blues and soul like the Fabulous Thunderbirds, Stevie Ray Vaughan, The Blasters, The Neville Brothers, and James Brown. Catch Mitch live in the evenings at Myett’s in Cane Garden Bay on Thursday the 9th, Friday the 10th and Monday the 13th; or in the Tortola Pier Park at Myett’s Chill Zone on Saturday the 11th and Tuesday the 14th.

Happy Valentine’s Day Every February 14th many people around the world celebrate Valentine’s Day by romancing their love interest or giving them a gift as a token of love. Of course, many don’t celebrate the holiday at all, and each person has their reasons. The common reason for not celebrating is – “Love should be celebrated everyday not just one day.” While I strongly agree with that principle, Valentine’s is a day designated especially for showing love. Don’t we all celebrate our birthdays, Mother’s Day and other special holidays? I don’t see the difference in making your love feel extra special on Valentines just like you would use those other holidays as a way to go the extra mile for someone important to you. For those who celebrate love day, here are some budget friendly ways to spoil your love (And yes ladies these pointers are for you too. Your king deserves to be spoiled). Give them a red rose. Just in case you didn’t know, a red rose represents love (as opposed to the white one that represents friendship). Instead of buying a dozen, buy only one and give it to her between teeth under your best Spanish Limin’Times Entertainment Gude
dancer impersonation. That way you’ll get to share a kiss. Oh wait! Do it outside under the stars so it can be extra romantic. I remember buying my love a single red rose just because (not as a Valentine’s gesture) just as a reminder that I love him and he’s special to me. Make them a homemade card. Don’t be lazy with a basic card with “I love you” written on it. Make sure it expresses your personal feelings for the person, and add in a coupon for further romance such as a back rub, a dozen kisses or a hot bubble bath with a glass of wine. Give them time. In a busy world, time is the most precious gift you can give anyone. Most of us have a daily routine so packed that by the time bedtime comes around, we are too tired to be social or intimate. This Valentine’s Day, how about giving your love some time? Turn off the electronics and spend the time indulging in each other. Walk down memory lane. Since love should be given daily, remind your love on Valentine’s Day all the beautiful reasons you feel in love with them. Pull out those old photos that you took when you first meet and stored away. Share many smiles together. 6

Bad Moms Parenting is serious business. All the pressure to provide a happy, healthy home, a good education, plus access to all the best brain-building extra curricular sports, arts and foreign language programs is enough to drive a mom over the edge. The comedy Bad Moms runs with that scenario, pitting hip but frustrated suburban mom Amy Mitchell (played by Mila Kunis) against the stuffy “Queen Bee” mom Gwendolyn James (Christina Applegate). When we first meet Amy, she’s an exaggeratedly stressed out mom: her kids are too picky, her job is ridiculous, and her husband is useless. Although the specifics are way over the top, the generalities ring true: She has too much to do and not enough help. The conflict is made even worse by the bullymom Gwendolyn, who not only seems to have everything in her and her kids’ lives more put together than a color-coded Pinterest board, she also convinces all the other moms to try to do the same. When Gwendolyn convenes an “emergency PTA meeting” declaring that all items brought to the next school bake sale need to be free of allergens like nuts, but also free of the basics of most baked goods like sugar, butter and eggs, Amy is the sole parent to stand up and say “nope.” (Sidenote: I found this school’s large PTA meetings the least believable part of the whole film.) After walking out of the meeting, Amy meets and befriends two other moms: the nervous and Limin’Times Entertainment Gude
mousy Kiki (Kristen Bell), and the brash and bawdy Carla. When Amy discovers that her useless husband has been unfaithful, she throws him out and the unlikely pair become her support system. Emboldened by her fellow over-worked moms, Amy blows off Gwendolyn’s rules for the bake sale, setting off the PTA boss’ temper. Baked goods are thrown, and in revenge Gwendolyn has Amy’s daughter pulled from the soccer team. This, in turn, unleashes Amy’s inner momma bear, and she decides to run against Gwendolyn in the upcoming PTA election. Even more chaos follows as Amy tries to convince her fellow parents to vote for her (and to throw off the shackles of suburban supermomness). She makes a compelling argument, but will she take the whole relaxed parenting thing too far when she throws a raging party at her house and hooks up with the school’s resident hot single dad? Laugh along with the Bad Moms on Netflix. 8

Pulling The Wrong Person (Part 1) Why, why, why? You try to be a good partner, you give as much as you can, you don’t cheat and you give up a lot to prove that you care. But somehow you wind up wondering why, at the end of it, you still wind up hurt, alone or frustrated. After just one, let alone a series of these relationships, you might wonder what is wrong with you and what you are doing wrong. Let’s say you sit down and evaluate your last few relationships you realize that your partners were physically or emotionally abusive. Or maybe your last few partners were cold and distant; or they were unable to commit. Whatever the serious issue they had, you took the relationship seriously because that person did not show up looking like they had a problem. If this is you, you might be the most wonderful person in the world, but you also might be taking some character strengths way overboard, causing the wrong people to be drawn to you. In this two-part series, we’re going to take a close look at some of these and talk about how you might be able to rein it in to a reasonable level so you don’t wind up taken advantage of. • You put yourself last. This one happens a lot with persons who have a religious upbringing and get the impression that loving yourself is the same thing as being selfish, and that others should always come first. When you put yourself last and your partner acts selfish, you think it’s okay to deny your own needs to please the other person. But once you make your partner your sole priority, even at the risk of losing yourself, what happens? The unscrupulous partner takes advantage of this by always furthering his or her needs and you are always left in the dust. While Limin’Times Entertainment Gude
it’s nice to make your partner feel important, don’t forget to make yourself a priority in your life too. • You think that a relationship completes you. Somehow you feel that you are not enough and a woman needs a man to be complete or as a man something is wrong with you if a woman is not always in your life. Feeling you must have a partner leads you to settle and accept just about anything, running away with the erroneous view that you are just half of a person. Newsflash! You are already a complete person. You are the whole sweet, delicious, beautiful cake and a partner is the icing; the icing enhance what is already there and makes the cake more flavorful. With the right partner you can have a beautiful relationship and life, but it’s better to be alone than be with someone who treats you badly and makes you miserable. Check out next week’s Ask Koren column for the conclusion of this series. Send your questions to askkoren@live.com or follow us on twitter @korennorton and a response will be provided 16

The Wannabe Champions it will haunt you,” he noted. “So that’s what happened to us. We have to go back to the drawing board, make sure we click on the finishing so that we end up in the final.” Savage said the 1-0 loss wasn’t the way that One Love wanted to tune up for the Islanders. “We had a little mishap today. Guys kind of lost focus, but believe me, we’ll be ready for the Islanders,” he said. “The Islanders are the favorites, but, the ball is round, don’t count the eggs till they hatch. My One Love boys can do it. I believe in them and they can do it.” And, as the BVI Cricket Association Twenty 20 League gets into high gear, former champs Cavaliers are looking to become the dominant team they once were, having won the first four titles under the new format. Cavaliers’ Vishal Bahrat said they are taking the tournament one game at a time and trying to play better cricket. He noted that after last year’s BVICA tournament, they won the Peter Harycraft and Dion “Ragga” Clarke tournaments. “We know we could play good cricket and we have a good team; and we just have to play one game at a time and play well,” he said. “We have prepared well, better than we have in a few seasons and players have been more committed this year. We want this tournament badly after not winning it in four years.” The 2017 season excitement will continue as other sports get their activities underway as everyone wannabe champions.
When you’re on top, everyone wants a piece of you. When you used to be there, you want to get back where you once were. Whether or not you’re good enough, being the champion is usually the goal. Once you’re the champ, staying there is another task. This weekend, the BVI Football Association will crown its Big Four champion after Islanders won the regular season with a 14-0 record, following Sunday’s 2-0 victory over the Sugar Boys for their fourth successive title. On Saturday, Sugar Boys will face Rebels, while One Love will meet Islanders with the Saturday winners meeting for the President’s Cup on Sunday. Following a 1-0 victory over One Love, Rebels’ Atiba Creese said their goal on Saturday against the Sugar Boys is simply to beat Sugar Boys, to whom they’ve lost twice during the season. “We had a close encounter in the last game, they only beat us one nil and we had a game plan and will go in what that same game plan again and try to overturn that one nil defeat,” he said. “They have a good and very sturdy midfield and we have to break them down in order to defeat them.” One Love’s Coach Mark Savage said finishing was a big factor for his team during the loss and they didn’t capitalize on their four first-half chances. “In any sport, if you don’t score your goals, Limin’Times Entertainment Gude
