Welcoming 2017 on your specific goal (or goals), lay out how you will get there. When will you do the thing? How often? What will you do if you can’t make it one time? What if it’s raining? What if you’re ill? Being ready to address those everyday difficulties will mean you’re in better shape to make a permanent change. Recruit some support. Sure, you could tell all your friends on social media via a status or two about your plan, but if you want to make the most of your goals, have a small group that you check in with regularly about how you’re doing. Help each other by asking about progress, listening to the challenges, and offering solutions. Or, even better, find a friend who has the same goal as you and participate in activities together. Finally, be patient with yourself. Like so much in life, change is easier said than done. Sure, you might stumble a bit on your journey, but if a change is worth making, it’s worth trying again after you slipup.

Many of us will make a resolution (or two or three) in the coming weeks, and they’ll be all about trying to do better than we’ve done in the past in one way or another. Some frown on the idea of resolutions as impossible, but the truth is that turning the page on the calendar really can be a good motivator for change! In case you need a little extra nudge, I’ve researched some ideas for how you can make your resolutions really stick. First, be thoughtful in your selections. It’s easy to default to something broad like “be healthier,” but those super general resolutions are hard to measure, and harder to keep. Instead, focus on patterns you want to break or other specific changes you can make to get closer to your general goal. If you zero in on details, you’ll wind up with something more achievable, like setting aside a time each week to shop for healthy foods to prepare at home. Next, plan for obstacles. Once you’ve hit

Christmas in the BVI Yeah! We have reached the time of the year that I love the most. Apart from Christmas Celebrations, I get to make a year older. Christmas is the annual celebration of the birth of Jesus Christ. Most commonly observed on Dec. 25th around the world. Although year after year I know a few who complain that they’re not feeling the Christmas spirit or that Christmas is just another day – I, on the other hand, can’t wait to listen to some Christmas music, decorate, wrap my loved ones’ gifts and just kick it with my family. Although I don’t have the decoration skills, I have little ideas and I’m not scared to put in my two cents when my mom is decorating. I look forward to the scent of a ham baking or the smell of cakes and tarts coming from the oven, and to the house being filled with laughter. Even though it can be a lot of work, I don’t complain about the process, the cleaning and preparing, it’s all part of it – just don’t try to get me do it at the last minute. Growing up in the BVI, Christmas was always about family and unity. As a child, you look forward to watching your grandparents bake or listen to them telling you stories of how they celebrated. The entire extended family would gather at one home. Someone reading this may smile because it brings back memories. Limin’Times Entertainment Gude

As children we looked forward to gifts and getting to spend our vacation playing with our cousins. One of my fondest memories is when we use to go around the island looking at the decorated homes. The Chalwell home in East End was the most beautiful decorated. I always said if I’m blessed with my own home, I hope I can decorate it half as beautifully one Christmas. Like many families, ours has its own special traditions. Christmas breakfast would be at my mom’s home and lunch would be at my uncle’s. There were also many caroling groups from home to home spreading the Christmas cheer. Seeing that Christmas falls on a Sunday this year, we are having a family lunch instead of breakfast. We will attend church service first then spend the afternoon together. Speaking about church, we attended Road Town Methodist Christmas Church’s 5am service growing up, although half the time we were shaking to wake or slept through most of the service. Although those were the days, many families still celebrate in the way the ones before them did. Families are still attending Christmas church services, having family gatherings, baking the traditional goodies and decorating, although it mostly done for the little ones in their homes. How will you spend Christmas this year?

Merry Christmas and Happy Holidays! 6

How the Grinch Stole Christmas! A classic tale of greed and selfishness overcome by the power of love, “How the Grinch Stole Christmas is a Dr. Seuss masterpiece. First published in 1957, the story has enchanted generations of children including my own. Over the years, the book has been transformed into several film versions. The one that recent viewers may be more familiar with is the 2000 adaptation, directed by Ron Howard and starring Jim Carey, at his diabolical best, as the Grinch. But to my mind, there is no better version than the animated film that first came out in 1966. In this animated classic, the Grinch is beautifully drawn in all his troll-like glory and brought to life by the resonant voice of the early horror film actor Boris Karloff (think Frankenstein circa 1931). The story takes place in “Whoville” a magical realm found on a snowflake. The inhabitants of Whoville, (the Whos, of course), are joyfully preparing for Christmas. In the meantime their neighbor, the Grinch, with a “heart two sizes too small” has been living in a cave on the side of a mountain above Whoville. Crankier than Ebeneezer Scrooge, he is driven mad by the Whos holiday preparations as they happily wrap gifts, decorate trees and far worse: all that singing! One night, the Grinch decides to exact his revenge and put an end to the celebrations. Dressing up as Santa, he straps antlers on his hapless dog Max, builds a rickety sleigh and travels to Whoville, where he slithers down chimneys, and steals the decorations, the food and even the toys beneath the trees. Once back in the cave his plan is to dump the toys in the morning. But Limin’Times Entertainment Gude

instead he hears the sound of the Whos singing joyfully, and in the ultimate epiphany, he realizes that there is more to Christmas than toys and food. His shrunken heart suddenly grows larger – three times larger, as it happens. Going back to Whoville, he returns the gifts and food and joins in the Whos’ feast: the spirit of Christmas taken to heart. Narrated in Seussian verse, delightfully animated and with a soundtrack of classic songs like, “You’re a Mean One Mr. Grinch,” the film is a joy from start to end. The animated version of How the Grinch Stole Christmas is inevitably rerun on television during the holiday season. But if you prefer your own, you can buy it on DVD at amazon.com and barnesandnoble.com, where a re-mastered version is available. If you prefer a downloaded “Grinch,” the Jim Carey film is available on iTunes. And, of course, every child deserves a copy of the book! 14

Give yourself the gift of love

yourself sometimes means making a conscious choice to remove yourself from people who belittle and disrespect you, people who are chronic liars, and people who are emotionally, physically or otherwise abusive. • Feed your body and your mind with the right things. Love means taking good care of yourself. Sometimes we develop bad habits that really hurt us and it takes a lot of discipline to change, but you are worth it. Take it one step at a time and ask for help if you need it. You only have one body and mind. • Stop trying to please everyone. Live with honor and make a determination to do the best you can and then leave it there. Someone will always think you should wear your hair differently, or make different choices, but you have to give up that need to please that leaves you constantly doubting your choices and who you are. • Be passionate about what matters to you. Don’t water down your likes and dislikes or make excuses for embracing a cause. You have every right to know and say exactly what matters to you and to throw your time, energy or money behind it. It’s okay to support the dreams of others, but don’t lose yours in the process. Oscar Wilde said “to love oneself is the beginning of a lifelong romance,” and that is the truth. Don’t let anyone make you feel selfish for loving yourself because if you don’t, then you end up chasing the wrong things or looking for an elusive love. There are certain things that you must give yourself.

We are just a few days away from Christmas and people are doing their last minute shopping. In this season of love, let us not forget to give to ourselves too. Here are some ways to shower yourself with love: • Say thanks. Take a few minutes and touch every part of your body, saying thanks for taking you through the year. We stand in front of the mirror and criticize our belly because it’s too big, our hair because it’s too short, our legs because they are skinny, no wonder we are constantly filled with self-loathing. Thank your head for housing your brain, allowing you to think and make decisions. Thank your feet for carrying you all day. If you only have one foot, then say thanks that you are still able to get around. Those eyes are precious, your heart is unique, and that ear that causes you to rush out of the way of a speeding car is priceless. • Be your own best friend. We are naturally social creatures, but sometimes you have to fly solo and it should not be so painful if you like who you are. Learn to enjoy activities alone and to value your solitude. If you cannot be alone and happy, then you will lead a lonely life or come across as needy or clingy. Put on your favorite music while you clean or cook or just chill and dance to the rhythm of your own soul. • Forgive yourself. You are human and you will mess up sometimes; we all do. Endeavour to do better and make amends if you need to but do not allow past mistakes to haunt you and cripple your present and future. Crawl out from that dark place and look forward with hope. • Give up toxic relationships. Loving Limin’Times Entertainment Gude
