Roundup This Week’s Feature Story by Chrystall Kanyuck-Abel BVI Cancer Society More than 1 million people are diagnosed with cancer every year in the Caribbean and Latin America, yet the topic is still something of a taboo here in the Virgin Islands, said Gloria Fahie recently. While recent data about the prevalence of the disease in the BVI aren’t available, the BVI Cancer Society president suspects that cases here are on the rise based on how much the society has to do. “The work is becoming more and more... We have a lot of calls,” she said. The calls and other requests are coming so fast these days that Gloria thinks the society will soon need a full-time staffer. “I want applications to be dealt with in a short period of time,” she said of requests for support for cancer treatment. At the moment, applications sometimes have to wait up to a month because the executive board that reviews applications meets monthly. Gloria is happy to hear from a student or re-

tiree with the time to help staff the office. The main event, Gloria says, is the Walk/Run for a Cure set for Oct. 15 at 5:30 am. Participants will meet at Noel Lloyd Positive Action Movement Park, and walk or run to Duff’s Bottom and back. Shondia McFadden-Sabari, founder of Bold and Breastless, will be a guest speaker after the walk. For those who aren’t early birds, check out the Pink Fashion Show at Umi at 5:30pm on Oct. 14, or show off your trivia knowledge at Sharky’s quiz night Oct. 26 at 7pm. But the society is not only busy in October. The rest of the year the all-volunteer crew works to assist cancer patients and their families. Their assistance takes a range of forms from providing educational materials, to funding treatment, or even connecting them to other groups who can help like the Movember Charitable Trust. “I believe in serving everyone,” Gloria said, “We are living in a community and we don’t want to operate separately.” For more information or to join the Cancer Society, call 499-0022, email info@bvicancersociety.com, or visit their office on Main Street. Normally open by appointment, for Cancer Awareness Month, the office hours are from noon-2pm and from 4:30-6pm Monday through Thursday.

It’s Time to Run

We have all heard the story that true love is hard to find, so it’s no wonder that when we find something resembling love we hold on to it tightly. There is nothing especially wrong with holding onto love when it’s the real thing, but what if it isn’t? Since October is Domestic Violence Awareness Month, instead of answering a reader question, I’m going to share five types partner you should get yourself away from as soon as possible: • The abuser. If someone repeatedly beats the heck out of you, constantly talks to you like you are a nobody, and belittles you or is mentally manipulative and cruel to you, you are in an abusive relationship. You could end up physically injured, dead or severely emotionally damaged if you allow yourself to be subjected to this behavior over a prolonged period of time. • The chronic cheater. Many people are willing to forgive an indiscretion or two, but a man or woman who always has another partner somewhere is saying to you that what you have to offer is not enough. A person like that seems to need constant attention. You deserve better and you should escape this situation before you are infected with an STD or get attacked by some jealous lover of your partner. • The narcissist. This partner thinks mostly about him or herself and shows little empathy for you. He or she is always right, could be very controlling and if a male, he thinks he is God’s gift to women and can’t understand why you expect monogamy. He or she can be charming and Limin’Times Entertainment Gude

persuasive and things go well at the beginning, until you realize you are being manipulated. You will never be as important to them as they are to themselves. • The consistent liar. Everyone makes mistakes but someone who has made a career out of being dishonest will only hurt you again. If the person is always lying and hiding something, the trust becomes broken and how can the relationship survive without trust? Some people start to believe their own lies and are so good at twisting things that you start to wonder if something is wrong with you. • The commitment-phobe. After 12 years of dating, you still only see him twice a week and he has said nothing about a permanent relationship. He does not want to settle down and either makes empty promises or says nothing at all. You feel used and wonder why you have wasted so many years of your life, but you keep hanging on. Stop making excuses and stop trying to change someone who does not want to be changed. You are not anyone’s savior so don’t stick around trying to fix anyone; give them the numbers for a few good therapists and put on your running shoes. When it gets to the point where you don’t even recognize yourself, let go and run. Start fresh, regain your dignity and treat yourself with care. Remember, the end of love is not the end of life. Send your questions to askkoren@live.com or follow us on twitter @korennorton and a response will be provided 8

Bazodee “Bazodee” is a West Indian term for dizzying love. If you have a love for Trinidadian culture or Caribbean culture on the whole, Bazodee won’t disappoint. The film, which was taped in Trinidad around Carnival time, is about being torn between doing what’s expected of you, and following your heart. It all begins when Anita (played by Natalie Perera) meets Lee (Machel Montano) at the airport. The two strike up a conversation about music that ends with Lee saying that Anita has inspired him to return to his career as a musician. The only problem with this budding romance? Anita was at the airport to pick up her fiancé Bharat (Staz Nair), and his family. Fate throws Anita and Lee together again soon after, when Lee performs for a party thrown by Anita’s father Ram (Kabir Bedi). At the end the party Anita tells Lee she’s been trying to set up her fiancé’s older brother Partiv with her cousin Poorivi for ages without success. Anita and Lee hatch a plot that finally brings Partiv and Poorivi together, but while they spy on the new couple, the chemistry between Lee and Anita becomes stronger. She kisses Lee, who responds by leaving in haste. It’s a good thing he left though, because her fiancé was looking for her. When Anita and her family attend another event where Lee is performing, Nikhil begins to suspect that there’s something going on between Anita and Lee. He sets out to prove to his brother that Anita is playing him. Later that evening, Anita meets up with Lee and they end up in a bus together. While bond-

ing, Anita asks Lee how can he sing Soca, having grown up in the church. The question prompts Lee (in his quintessential Trini accent) to say my favorite line from the entire movie and a phrase I’ve heard many of my Caribbean people use: “Haul yo’ rass, I was in the choir!” Despite their deep connection, Anita tells Lee she has decided to break it off and go ahead with her wedding to Bharat, feeling it’s more important to honor her father’s plans to merge the two families both with the wedding and in a high-stakes business venture. But brother Nikhil has other plans. His spies had managed to capture a photo of Anita and Lee kissing, which of course he showed everyone, causing the couple to end their engagement and, because of the contract between Ram and Bharat’s father. Anita and her dad lost everything, including his house. It’s a savage blow to the whole family and Anita, her father, and Lee don’t speak to each other for months afterward. You’ll have to watch the movie to find out how they manage to recover from financial and romantic catastrophe. Bazodee is now playing at UP’s Cineplex. 9
