The Fundació Mies van der Rohe Barcelona is an incubator of creative architectural ideas, research and activity. It is a platform that creates opportunities linked to work, research and cultural exchange. It provides support for emerging talents as they embark on their careers. It has organised the European Union Prize for Contemporary Architecture – Mies van der Rohe Award since 1988 with the backing of the European Commission. The Prize is now one of Europe's most important and influential cultural platforms, with a worldwide impact. The Prize is the “Oscar” of built architecture (infrastructure, buildings, public spaces and landscapes) under private, public and mixed management. The Jury is composed of prestigious architects, critics and professionals from the construction sector. The Prize is the Foundation's core activity.

2,998 projects 298 models
The models have built up an important treasure for the Foundation. The successive Prizes since 1988 have shaped a perspective on the evolution of architecture and the way it works with materials.
8
This Prize is unique because it is awarded to a specific built work, regardless of its scale or program, not the career of an architect. The selection is made from amongst all the nominations to ensure that all good architecture is included. It also extends and enriches the perception of the contemporary culture.

During the same period, the Fundació began to extrapolate projects from its database on a topic basis in order to highlight its variety and richness. During the Architecture Biennale in Shenzhen, the Fundació Mies presented an exhibition entitled “Europe: on Borders, Value and Quality. The identification of quality in Architecture”. It included a selection of Prize projects related to urban limits, examples of urban development with a critical historical perspective and a chronology of European social and economic development. The archive contains a variety of examples from Eastern and Western Europe where urban regeneration has had positive effects on the development of the city and its economy. A parallel debate was held on the influence and status of cultural heritage and its development in Europe and other regions of the world.
Rethinking Europe Strelka, Moscow 16.07.2014 The Fundació organise and curate programmes
The Fundació was invited to organise four events for the summer program of the Strelka Institute, Moscow. “Rethinking Europe – European experience in the development of the city” is about successful experiences in the development and urban design of four large European cities: Amsterdam, Berlin, London and Barcelona. The most successful European examples of built works and projects were used to develop spaces in Moscow.

The purpose of this program was to show innovative European approaches to the development of urban areas and to investigate their applicability in Moscow. The program included four panel discussions, events and workshops for students in developing a real zone of Moscow, addressed by representatives of institutions related to architecture and urbanism from Europe's four most interesting cities.

This period can be summarized as “Understanding the current state of European architecture”. It coincided with: the celebration of a quarter century of European architecture, held in the Pavilion on the occasion of the 2013 Prize. The first debate, "Breaking New Ground", involved 350 architects from around the world. The exhibition travelled in the same format to ten European countries, and concluded on the same day a year later, at the Venice Biennale of Architecture.

Understanding the current state of European architecture: outside Europe 23.11.2013
Another aim of this tour was to see how European architecture is regarded on other continents. Contacts were renewed with the Museum of Modern Art (MoMA), member of the Board of Trustees since 1983, and a panel debate was held on the influence and status of cultural exchanges between Europe and the United States in the field of architecture. This initiative focused on understanding the vision of European architecture from outside the continent.

For the first time in the history of the Prize, all five finalist works were presented by their architects at a public ceremony before the Jury and an audience of 500. This years, instead of deciding on the winner at the end of the site visits, the Jury reached its decision after the presentation, and made its announcement at the ceremony.

Exhibition of the 420 works nominated for the 2015 Prize, at the ETSAB
420 projects For the first time, the jury met at the Barcelona School of Architecture, ETSAB, where the 420 pre-selected works were exhibited immediately afterwards. Universities are incubator for our future architects, the places where, more than anywhere else, good architecture is taught.
EU Prize Mies van der Rohe Award 2015
The seven-member Jury is always international, and usually composed of architects. This year, the Jury included an architect from another continent and a client- someone who pays architects for their work, or makes a commitment to good architecture. The Jury was composed by: Cino Zucchi, Chair of the Jury, Margarita Jover, Lene Tranberg, Peter L. Wilson, Li Xiangning, Tony Chapman, Hansjörg Mölk, Giovanna Carnevali, Prize Secretary, Ivan Blasi, Prize Coordinator 58

There are no additional sounds. Only some subtle, intertwined and dynamic variations of sounds that are already present in the Pavilion. But don’t think about it. It’s not about the intervention. It’s about the Pavilion. It’s about you in the Pavilion.

Walk around. Slowly. And listen. Attentively but not in a focused way. Do not listen to the intervention. Just walk through the Pavilion and listen.

This is an open debate, a question that does not pursue a single answer but rather an ongoing analysis that helps us to understand what Europe is, what characterizes us, what unites us and what makes us different. This project presents a broad range of visions from these architects' perspectives, through their experience as teachers, researchers and professional practice in and also outside Europe.
