How to COPE with being SINGLE during this Holiday Season
The holiday season is here and it’s a time to spend with loved ones, enjoy holiday parties and just overall have a good time. But there are many people who are single around the holidays and let me just say, it can be hard being alone. Don’t get us wrong; the holidays are stressful for just about everybody. There is so much planning to be done, decisions to be made and money to be spent. And while this is true for almost every adult, the holidays can be particularly stressful for single people. The holiday season is practically designed to cater to families and couples. With the holidays often throwing a sharp focus on relationships, the holidays can be bitter when you’re single. If you’re not into spending the holidays alone, the only other option is to spend it with family and loved ones. This is usually great, until they start grilling you about your dating life, reminding you that you’re once again single during the holidays. 12 | LINA ZUNIGA MAKEUP
Whether you’ve recently gone through a breakup or are just frustrated by the fact that you’re still alone, the good news is that flying solo during the holidays doesn’t have to equal misery. So what’s a single person to do? Here are a few tips to help you cope with being single during this holiday season: Surround yourself with positive energy If you are single, try spending the holidays with others, whether family, friends or like-minded individuals. Have this conversation with yourself and determine whether this is a good move for you. When you surround yourself with good people, you are far more likely to adopt empowering beliefs and see that life is happening for you rather than to you. Pamper yourself Rather than waste time wallowing and dwelling on your singlehood, consider pampering yourself during the holidays. If you are
currently unattached, it can be too easy to overlook the importance of setting aside time to treat yourself, especially when you’re so preoccupied with proving to everyone that you are totally ok with being single. But sometimes, we all need a gentle reminder that you do not need to be in a relationship to hit the town and enjoy all the finer things in life. There are plenty of solo dates that you can plan that will provide you with the perfect opportunity to reconnect with yourself while practicing some much-needed self-love. Perhaps consider booking a spa day or if you are in the mood to splurge, why not treat yourself to an overnight getaway? Pampering yourself does not have to be expensive either. Go on; have that ice cream before dinner or watch that reality TV show that you have been waiting to binge on. Dance around to whatever silly or cheesy music that you want or watch your favorite movie over and over again. Let your single flag fly and relish being alone. Find things and activities to occupy your time Try exploring your mind and follow your curiosities. Take a dance class, take a cooking lesson, join the local Christmas choir, take a pottery class, or do anything else that will keep you occupied and busy. The idea here is to lose yourself in your passion, allow your creative self to explore, expand and flourish during this time. Even shopping at the mall for a nice outfit and treating yourself to a night out can be lots of fun since there will probably be other singles out there just like you! The most important thing is to have faith that eventually you will meet that special someone and who knows who you’ll meet while you’re out and about ;). Happy Holidays! LINA ZUNIGA MAKEUP | 13

BEAUTY CALL with Jiyan Hasan
Lina: Thank you for taking the time to do this interview. I would love to get to know you, so tell us about you! Who is Jiyan? Where are you from and how did you get your start in the fitness industry? Jiyan: My name is Jiyan Hasan. I was born in Duhok, Iraq to 2 Amazing and Courageous Individuals along w/ 6 siblings. From the age of 2 to 6 my family and I escaped the war on foot for miles and lived in a refugee camp in Istanbul,Turkey along with 800 other refugee families who were forced to leave their comfort and all behind.

I was raised in Nashville, TN but I now reside in Atlanta, GA. I moved to Atlanta September 2013 to pursue my dream & passion in Fitness/Health! This is where Pretty Fit Girls Club, LLC was born now known as Pretty Fit Academy. My passion for health and fitness grew while I was on my own weight loss journey. I weighed 195 pounds when I started at 16 years old. I realized that losing weight took a lot more mental and emotional strength than physical. After years of struggling with weight loss, dieting and failing, and bulimia, something had to change. With no knowledge of weight loss, I took drastic measures in the hopes of losing weight and increasing my confidence. I turned to exercise as a stress reliever and began a new journey after becoming fed up with being overweight. I started to find my own internal strength in the gym and that’s when I fell in love. I now say that “Fitness saved my life!” Over time, I lost 60 pounds and discovered a new life for myself. I started sharing my journey on Instagram like it was my daily journal/blog and realized I was inspiring thousands of women and some men around the world.
Lina: What made you decide to start your own coaching service? Can you tell us a little bit about your brand and what it stands for? Jiyan: I now have an Online Coaching platform called Pretty Fit Academy where I help women create a confident relationship with themselves by overcoming unhealthy habits, self doubt and insecurity while using fitness as a tool. We use exercise to transform your mindset and body all in one stop. Lina: Was there ever a time you wanted to quit and how did you overcome that? What motivates and inspires you to keep moving forward? Jiyan: I can’t remember an exact moment in my journey that I wanted to quit, but I definitely had moments where it got challenging and I had thoughts of quitting. I had come too far and I quickly became obsessed with working out and going to the gym as an escape. I was using fitness as a tool to help me fight the battles that I was fighting internally. So that was my only way of escape and a place I found control. I stopped measuring my progress on how I looked and focused on how I felt more importantly. Lina: What is a common misconception about personal trainers and what advice would you give to anyone trying to start off in the fitness industry? Jiyan: A common misconception about personal trainers is that we were fit our whole lives and working out as well as eating healthy comes easy for us, but that’s not true. We are human, and there’s women like myself that still like to snack and eat good food lol so we struggle sometimes too. Only difference is that we have built discipline throughout the years and have found balance. The best advice I can give anyone starting off in the fitness industry is to be yourself and do not try to be like anyone else in the industry. Because your story is unique. Everyone relates to one another differently. You may have an entirely different audience that may relate to you and your style of coaching more than the next trainer. So stay in your own lane. Lina: What is your transformation story?

Winter SKINCARE
Written By
The season for holiday functions, office parties, and family gatherings has arrived! To (intentionally) sound cliché, it’s the most wonderful time of the year! Your skin, however, may have to suffer the consequences. More than any other season during the year, we find ourselves indulging in more frequent sugar and alcohol consumption, and colder weather causes us to turn up our heaters. All these things can wreak havoc on our skin, especially for those that are more sensitive. Even so, by no means would I change anything about the holidays, but it may be time to consider making some lifestyle adjustments and doing an audit of our skincare products to ensure healthy and glowing skin all winter long. Although skin health should be important all year round, during the wintertime we must be extra intentional to protect our skin from all that the season throws at it. Focusing on barrier strength and protection is the key to keeping your skin at its best during the winter. Here are some of our favorite winter skincare must-haves to consider switching to this season: Joanna Vargas Cloud Bar Cleansing your skin is an essential piece of your skincare routine, especially in the evening, and this bar cleanser from celebrity facialist Joanna Vargas is a great choice for dry and sensitive skin.

Although foaming, it’s packed with hydrating ingredients (including shea butter) that won’t strip the skin and chamomile flower water to help sooth redness and irritation. In the mornings, opt to use a micellar water for a gentle cleanse and makeup wearers should double cleanse in the evening to remove all makeup and excess impurities from the skin prior to a proper cleanse. SkinFix Barrier+ Triple Lipid-Peptide Cream
What are lipids and why do I need them? Lipids are the skin's natural fatty acids, ceramides, and cholesterol. These compounds play a very essential role in keeping our skin’s natural protective barrier strong and healthy by holding in hydration, assisting in the skin’s repair and recovery processes, and maintaining firmness and elasticity. The SkinNerds over at SkinFix call lipids “the mortar that holds the skin barrier bricks together.” This moisturizer targets dehydration for dry and sensitive skin by aiding in the replenishment of skin barrier lipids, fighting free radical damage, and reducing trans epidermal water loss, all areas of concerns for dry, dehydrated, and sensitized winter skin. For an extra boost of deep hydration, apply a multi-molecular hyaluronic acid on damp skin prior to moisturizing. Jessika Goicochea Yes, exfoliating during the winter months is key for optimal product penetration into the skin. Instead of a physical exfoliant, opt for a gentler, yet effective, exfoliator to get the job done. Don’t let the word “chemical” in chemical exfoliant fool you. Physical exfoliants, such as face scrubs, can possibly cause irritation for dry skin. Consider a gentle option for your resurfacing needs such as this YTTP liquid exfoliant. It’s applied as a leave on treatment like other exfoliating toners. The difference here is the gentle blend of alpha, beta, and polyhydroxy acids combined with their proprietary blend of superfoods such as kale, spinach, licorice root, and green tea. This outstanding formulation, safe for all skin types, will help to sweep away dead skin, unclog pores, boost hydration and sooth the skin all in one. Incorporating this into your winter routine will boost product absorption and reveal brighter skin.
