Beauty FALL Written By Fall is here and, after over a year of mastering the no-makeup-makeup look, it’s about damn time we have some fun and begin playing with color again! The fall season is a great time to try new looks and give your makeup bag a fresh upgrade. This year we’re trading in minimalism for pops of color, lush hair and soft, natural skin. Mario Dedivanovic, celebrity makeup artist and founder of Makeup by Mario, recently told Page Six Style “Fall is the time to bump up the barely-there, minimal makeup routines from summer to more elevated, pulledtogether looks.”
Super Flushed Blush Flushed cheeks but, for the fall, make it editorial AND wearable! Blush, particularly cream blushes, came to the forefront this year and they aren’t going anywhere just yet. For a bit more drama and snatched cheekbones, apply blush from the apples of the cheeks up into the temples for a draped effect. Keep the summer glow alive with a satin or dewy finish cream blush and apply using this nod to the original technique born in the 70’s and you’re sure to achieve a more lifted look.
After a rough 2020, this year’s fall season has many of us feeling audacious and nostalgic as the world continues to shift into a new normal. So, pour yourself a cup of warm apple cider and get cozy! These trends are sure to inspire you to dust off those brushes and book your next hair or nail appointment!
Autumnal Skittle Manis Fun and sophistication can most definitely share the same space! The skittle mani proves it and what a perfect time of year for this trend to take off. Save the nail art for the holidays and allow colorful arrays of nude, chocolate brown, and rich auburn hues to stand center stage and bring your mani to life!
Power Lip As the team over at Poundcake so eloquently put it “Fall’s coming, and with it bolder reds.” I couldn’t have said it better myself! As many begin to choose the maskfree life, lipstick sales have begun seeing a major uptick. From vampy, deep blood reds to classic, show-stopping true blue ruby tones, this fall we are ready to ditch our masks for bold, statement making, confidence boosting red lips.
Fluffy Brows After their first appearance in 2016 thanks to West Barn Co., soap brows have entered the chat.. again! Today, however, there’s no shortage of options on the market for all of your fluffy brow grooming needs. Waxes and gels not only offer all day hold, they give you the ability to shape full brows to perfection while adding dimension. Lacking in the fullness department? Then pair your wax or gel with a brow pen like the

2021 TRENDS OF Jessika Goicochea Anastasia Beverly Hills Micro-Stroking Detailing Brow Pen to fill in sparse areas. Bombshell Waves A style that has come full circle by almost 100 years! As we enter the roaring 20’s of the twenty-first century, this season’s voluminous waves bring a contemporary twist to old Hollywood glamour. This style, although having graced the covers of magazines and recent red carpets, brings a touch of wearable glamour to your boardroom (or zoom meeting) style and will easily transition into the evening for after work cocktails.

BEAUTY CALL with Debbie Chow
Debbie: I grew up in Toronto and Hong Kong— and my parents were both entrepreneurs. Growing up, I watched them open their own small businesses: a little toy shop, a food business, a clothing store. My sister and I were always helping out, too. I suppose their entrepreneurial spirit rubbed off on me. My relative in China is in the makeup brush manufacturing business —so I ordered some samples and started going to trade shows. That was the start of Auraline Beauty, my professional line. I would just collect business cards, go back to the hotel, plug all the information into a spreadsheet, then hustle. I didn’t even have a website at the beginning—I just grew my database of contacts. Lina: What made you decide to start your own beauty brand? Can you tell us a little bit about your brand and what it stands for? How did you go from owning a private label into creating a beauty line? Debbie: About four years ago, I started IBY Beauty, my direct-to-consumer makeup line. IBY stands for Inspired By You—and it’s a playful, California-inspired brand. My team had so much experience creating high-quality products, but we really created a blank slate with Auraline. We produce beautiful, fabulous products perfect for professionals to make their own. So with IBY, our brilliant team got a chance to get creative and build our own brand. We use those same high-quality formulations and ingredients—and get to have a ton of fun reaching a different audience.

Lina: Was there ever a time you wanted to quit and how did you overcome that? Debbie: Honestly, no. I’ve never wanted to quit. I’m so passionate about what I do! But that doesn’t mean my energy doesn’t ebb and flow. Sometimes, I’m exhausted—I’m a mom, a wife, a business owner, a sister, so many different things. When I’m drained, I make time to do simple things: cook, play with my kids, go for a walk. This gives me the energy I need to persevere, even when it’s not easy or fun. Lina: What challenges did you face in the beginning of your journey? What inspires you to keep going? Debbie: In the early years, I did back-to-back trade shows every month. I was constantly trying to build our customer base. It did not come easy. And even recently, our base was tested again by the pandemic. But when things are hard, I say to myself: this is a puzzle I get to solve. For example, right now logistics are really difficult. So, how do I get products here quickly and at a reasonable price? There are always challenges to running a business, and there’s always something that needs to be figured out. That’s part of the job.

Lina: Thank you for taking the time to do this interview. I would love to get to know you, so tell us about you! Who is Debbie? Where are you from, and how did you get your start in the beauty industry?
Lina: Describe a pivotal moment in your career that helped you reach the level of success you are at today. Debbie: There hasn’t been that one big moment. It's been thousands of small steps toward consistent growth. Because we're not in retail, there's no big order from Sephora that puts you in 100 stores. It's been small, incremental steps month after month, year after year. Lina: What advice would you give to anyone trying to start their own beauty line? Debbie: This advice was given to me when I was just starting out. And it’s stuck with me because it’s true. It’s not inspirational; it’s just sound business advice. If you’re starting your own private label as a makeup professional or small business, you’re likely on a tight budget. You need to put aside money for things like marketing and insurance etc. If you have $5,000, don’t spend $4,000 on products. Buy the minimum of what you need, then let your customers show you what they do and don’t want. You can always order more. Lina: What else can we expect from Debbie in the next few years? Do you have any plans for you and your brand that you can share with us? Debbie: Yes! We’ve been chatting with lots of agencies recently about helping creators and influencers launch their own brands. Creators and Influencers love the idea of starting their own makeup line, but there are a lot of pain points to solve: everything from where to warehouse products to how to run an e-commerce shop and handle shipping and logistics. So we've developed a program where we handle the back-end operational processes of running a brand. And the influencer can focus on what they do really well: producing fantastic content for their followers.
