- Cousins are Expanding

We’re excited to announce that we’ve acquired the prestigious 80,000 sqft Shrewsbury store of Alan Ward Furniture, Shropshire’s undoubted number one shopping destination for furniture. We’ve also taken over their reputable store in Newcastle-under-Lyme. Both will be completely refurbished and rebranded to Cousins, making us the largest family-run furniture retailer in the Midlands. Cousins’ expansion is fantastic news for Shropshire. Encouraged and grateful for such buoyant sales since lockdown, it comes at a time when there’s been so much bad news. Cousins will begin with a massive Liquidation Sale in both Shrewsbury and Newcastle to clear Alan Ward’s remaining stock, now on. 5

Furnished for quality and give honest advice. Most of our customers recommend us to friends and families, which signifies that we are doing something right."

There are few items that turn a house into a home more than a comfortable settee or an easy chair. Of course, they need to be well made. The last thing any of us wants when we settle down to watch TV or read a book is for cushions to sag or legs to buckle.

If it’s upholstered, anything can be made, from sofas and chairs, headboards to coffee tables. Need something bespoke? Most items can be adapted to suit different room shapes and sizes. Stain-resistant chemical treatments are also available.

If you’re looking for furniture that will keep you cosy for years, head to Park Lane Furnishings, in Halesowen.

Visitors to the showroom in Park Lane can choose from a wide range of styles, colours and fabrics, from chenille to velvet, plains to plaid. Designer fabrics are also available. The team’s services are also popular with people who wish to have items re-covered. This can be done in a week and is ideal for those who want a fresh look but don’t want to change their favourite chair.

Since its launch in 2011, the company, which is proud to be a British manufacturer, has gained a reputation for high quality service and workmanship and consistent prices all year round. Director Andy Cutler explained: “We don’t have seasonal sales events because we’re a manufacturer and I’m a firm believer of you get what you pay for, so we strive to supply the best quality at reasonable prices all year round. We simply make better quality furniture built to last, with no pressurising sales staff in our showroom. We listen to our customers’ needs

Our Jobs

Why I Love My Job Reflect - Lisa Evans Reid

My BTEC in Lights, Lasers and Aesthetics Therapy was completed in 2013. And Reflect Skin & Body Clinic and the purpose-built medical-based aesthetic clinic in Stourbridge was established the same year.

At Reflect, our passion is skin health. We treat ladies and gentlemen of all ages and skin types, who have a skin concern or condition that they want to improve. My first career choice was as a Physiotherapist and over 15 years I built up successful private practice. I loved my job with a passion, but after fifteen years I began to struggle with tired hands and needed a change of direction. I did at one point consider podiatry until I realised, I was not that keen on feet! But while researching podiatry, I discovered the wonders of lasers and the benefits, they could bring to skin if used correctly. Helping to rejuvenate and eliminate skin conditions. This led me to investigate other new treatments that could enhance skin health. As a qualified Nutritionist and fitness instructor I understood the importance of diet and exercise too.

As Aestheticians we specialise in treating a wide range of skin health conditions. Such as Acne or Rosacea to lesion removals including skin tags and warts. In addition, we help to rejuvenate the skin to restoring a youthful appearance. To help achieve this we use award-winning technologies such as 'HydraFacial.' and the 'elight IPL'. In fact, we introduced the eleventh HydraFacial system to the UK in 2013, making us one of the most experienced clinics in Europe. Permanent hair removal is another area of skin health we help our clients with. Our Soprano Ice Platinum Laser can treat any skin type including dark and light skin.

A passion and purpose had been born restoring skin health; the journey had started. 24

Our Jobs The unique technology combines the benefits of three different types of hair removal lasers enabling it to permanently remove unwanted hair from virtually every part of the body. Including the nose and ears, which is very popular with men. Unlike other lasers the Soprano’s technology makes the treatments virtually painless! All businesses face challenges and you must take the rough with the smooth and give it 110% commitment in all areas 24/7. Treating people fairly, under promising and over delivering whether that is the customer, colleagues or distributors. Building good honest relationships where you tell the truth and act with integrity. Over the years Reflect has built a solid reputation and have many hundreds of loyal clients who are happy to recommend our solutions to their friends and family. The greatest rewards are helping someone beat a distressing condition and for them to feel confident to endorse you to the people they care for.

Immediate treatment results are possible and do happen. But the real long-lasting results are achieve over time and need to be maintained. Each person's skin and life are unique, so we listen to your concerns and in turn, advise you of ours. We then design an individual treatment and care plan for your skin.

Sadly, today's society and especially in the world of social media along with our idea of what is real and classed as beautiful is distorted and personal appearance is judged harshly and with unwarranted criticism. Leading to low self-esteem and lack of confidence leading to mental health concerns. We are all living longer and often starting new career opportunities or hobbies in our later years when the children have gone! Maintaining our appearance can only have a positive effect on how we feel and allow us to compete in this exciting world for longer. Be the best version of yourself!

What are the clients saying? I have had a few sessions with Katarina and have noticed a vast improvement in the area's she has treated. I would highly recommend her; she is professional in her approach and gives excellent advice on aftercare and is super friendly too. Thank you, Katarina! Excellent customer service as always from Lisa and her team. Sarah James I have been a few times to the clinic, and each time has been a good experience especially during this pandemic, everything is in place to ensure the customer is happy. Well done. Carole Fox

Reflects aim is to help everyone enjoy a healthy glowing complexion. The precious gift of healthy skin is a challenge, as the media and celebrities encourage us to cover it up with potions, lotions and makeup that they promote. We prefer our clients to show off their natural healthy glowing skin and ditch the makeup. We achieve this with quality treatments and education.

I have been visiting Reflect for about four years for skincare and skin health. Lisa and her team are amazing, highly trained and qualified. I can honestly say that my skin has never been in such good condition. Now I would not go anywhere else. Jackie Casey 25

GOLD STANDARD FOR SENIOR CARE IN THE WEST MIDLANDS Julie Weaver, General Manager of new, luxury Cinnamon Care Collection care home, Parkfield Grange in Stourbridge has specialised in elderly care since qualifying as a Registered Nurse in 1985.

She continued her studies alongside nursing and has a degree in law together with Masters degrees in Law & Employment Relations and Leadership & Management. We ask Julie about Parkfield Grange’s ethos of providing the gold standard in senior care. 1. What should you look for when choosing a care home for a loved one?

Julie Weaver General Manager

'Care' is key - select an environment where your loved one will be looked after by experienced, knowledgeable, caring individuals. My first love remains running a care home and I am absolutely thrilled to be leading the team at Parkfield Grange. For me, Cinnamon embodies the values and principles I have worked to deliver throughout my career - namely residents treated as cherished individuals. Parkfield Grange has been purpose-built to provide an exceptional physical environment with landscaped gardens.

We believe we are the difference between good care and great care. Our aim is to help older people live happier, healthier, more fulfilled lives and give peace of mind to the families who entrust us with the wellbeing of their loved ones. The Cinnamon Care Collection ethos is to shape care around the individual with every need catered for, including favourite foods and activities. Additionally, when COVID-19 restrictions permit, we will start group outings and tailored events.

2. When is the 'right' time to consider care?

Parkfield Grange is part of the award-winning Cinnamon Care Collection, voted Top 20 Care Home Group for the last three consecutive years. Opening in early 2021, the new care home offers 68 en-suite bedrooms and 6 one-bedroom care suites. The care suites include an en-suite bedroom, lounge and kitchenette - ideal for couples or those looking for more space than a traditional care bedroom.

People need care at different stages.  The on-site show suite at Parkfield Grange in Hagley Road, Stourbridge enables prospective residents and their families to view the elegant facilities firsthand. It’s always best to look at residential care options early so as to not rush the decision. As well as excellent day-to-day care, we will offer short stay or respite for convalescence.  We can also offer long-term, specialist dementia care in enriched, dementia friendly environments.

For more information visit www.cinnamoncc. com email: parkfield.haa@cinnamoncc.com or telephone: 01384 466814.

3. How do you differ from competitors? 26

Julia has exactly the right attitude and personality to do just that! This role requires patience, empathy and the ability to put our clients at ease, Julia has this and more

We have been inundated with enquires from people needing help with their hearing needing either hearing tests or wax removal due to feeling ‘blocked up’. As a result we are very happy to welcome our new member of the clinical team. Julia joins us at Hear in Hagley to support our clients requiring wax removal to help them hear better with more confidence.

“She has really fitted into the team well and the customers love her. We are lucky to have her to support the ever-growing wax removal business and provide the excellent standard of care that our clients deserve. It is important that we look after our clients in the safest possible way but with a relaxed feel. The team at Hagley is exceptional and now complete!”

Julia wanted to join Hear in Hagley due to the exceptional reputation of the clinic. With an extensive customer care background, Julia wanted to further her career as a Hearing Health Practitioner which we were very excited about. “When I first visited Hear in Hagley, I was impressed by how clean and professional the environment was with welcoming, approachable staff. I was keen to become part of this.”

SKIN CONCERNS

Lisa Evans Reid Clinical Director at Reflect

Seborrheic Keratosis

Our skin is the largest living organ on our body and is the first line of defence from infection and disease. Therefore, we must take care of our skin as early as possible, protecting it from the weather and pollutants. Which are the main contributing factors to damaging the skin and premature ageing.

Seb Ks as they are known are superficial, pigmented, lesions, often rough in texture, flat and wart-like in appearance. The cause of seborrheic keratosis is unknown, but genetic mutations have been identified in certain types. The lesions occur in middle age and later and most often appear on the trunk or temples.

A skin condition/lesion is skin that has an abnormal growth or appearance compared to the surrounding healthy skin. Typically, these changes are not considered harmful, just unsightly. The cause is usually related to ageing, hormones, irritants, viruses or is hereditary.

Cherry Angioma Red moles, or cherry angiomas, are skin growths that can develop on most areas of your body. They're also known as senile angiomas or Campbell de Morgan spots. They are usually found on people aged 30 plus. The collection of small blood vessels inside a cherry angioma give them a reddish appearance found in all parts of the body.

Daily in our clinic, we examine and treat a variety of different skin concerns from specific lesions, to general skin problems. It is vitally important to have an in-depth consultation and assessment of any skin concern. We operate within strict guidelines and often refer a client to their GP or dermatologist for further investigation. The good news is it's relatively rare that doctor diagnoses a severe condition such as cancer. However, early diagnosis typically leads to successful treatment outcomes.

Milia A milium cyst is a small, white bump that typically appears on the nose and cheeks. These cysts form in groups. Multiple cysts are called milia. Milia occur when keratin becomes trapped beneath the surface of the skin. Keratin is a strong protein found in skin tissues, hair, and nail cells.

Common Skin Problems Skin tags

Warts

Skin tags are painless, noncancerous growths on the skin.

Warts are lumps of hard skin that can form on their own or in clusters. A virus called human papillomavirus (HPV) causes the skin to grow abnormally. Commonly found on the fingers but warts are highly contagious and can spread to any part of the body and may infect others.

They're connected to the skin by a small, thin stalk called a peduncle. Skin tags are common in both men and women, especially after age 50. They can appear anywhere on your body, though they are usually found in places where your skin folds such as the armpits, groin, neck and eyelids

Sebaceous cyst Sebaceous cysts form on the face, neck, or 30

Our Health torso, and large cysts may cause pressure and pain, they are noncancerous and very slow growing.

Actinic keratosis Actinic keratosis is typically less than 2 cm in size and are a thick, scaly, or crusty patch of skin. And form in areas exposed to the sun, like the hands, arms, face, scalp, and neck. Usually, pink in colour but can have a brown, tan, or grey base.

Xanthelasma

Treating skin problems

Xanthelasma is a sharply demarcated yellowish deposit of cholesterol underneath the skin. It usually occurs on or around the eyelids. While they are neither harmful to the skin nor painful, these minor growths may be disfiguring and can be safely removed. You are more likely to get these growths if you have: High LDL ("bad") cholesterol or low HDL ("good") cholesterol.

There are two main treatments for lesions, Cryotherapy and Sublimation (Plasma). However, before any treatment, the skin condition will need to be examined by our skin specialists, who will recommend a treatment plan. Should the skin specialist feel that the lesion requires further investigation, you will be referred to your GP.

New Year New You! The New Year is slowly nearing, and with the holiday season already upon us many people are indulging in retrospection and re-evaluating some of their life choices. New Year’s resolutions are the perfect opportunity for all those who have failed to start making the changes that they said they would make next week, next month, or perhaps when winter starts. Well, now is your chance to sit down and prepare a list of important lifestyle changes you want to make, and being the charitable and caring bunch that we are here at Lifehack, we’ve decided to give you a bit of help – because since the majority of people fail to stick to their resolution, you’ll need all the help you can get.

GET IN SHAPE

by cheap junk food. However, with a good amount of determination and some basic tips you can slowly develop healthier eating habits. Learn to control emotional eating, be aware of reasons for diets to fail, make use of these tricks and have a look at these awesome and healthy recipes.

Losing weight is the top resolution for the English, and combined with “exercise more” and “stay fit and healthy” it is something that over a third of the population wishes to achieve. It’s easy enough to start an exercise and diet program, but the trick is to find a decent one that will give you steady results and will be easy to stick to in the long run. Have a look at these tricks, hacks, exercises and mistakes to avoid to make the best our of your resolution.

STOP PROCRASTINATING The biggest barrier that keeps most people from reaching their goals is the desire to relax and do something fun instead of working hard. Once you get used to procrastinating it’s difficult to snap yourself out of it, so you’ll need to put in a lot of work to change this bad habit. There are many useful tips out there to find your way to stop procrastinating. There are also tools which can help you achieve this task.

START EATING HEALTHIER FOOD, AND LESS FOOD OVERALL This is usually an extension of the previous resolution. Switching to a healthier diet can be incredibly tricky when we are surrounded 32

Our Health IMPROVE YOUR CONCENTRATION AND MENTAL SKILLS

BECOME MORE CONFIDENT AND TAKE SOME CHANCES

People have been trying to find ways to improve their focus and cognitive capacities for thousands of years, and most ancient civilizations had some combination of mental exercise and herbal medicine to help them reach this goal. Today we can use anything from apps to ancient meditation techniques to boost concentration and hone our mental skills. If you go through with this, you will be able to control your mood, learn faster and have an easier time solving problems.

If you are confident other people notice it, and it is much easier to have your opinions heard, ask people out on dates and get ahead at work. A good dose of self-confidence will help you lead a much happier life overall. Don’t hesitate to get some input on ways to boost your confidence.

EARN MORE MONEY Even billionaires are always looking for ways to earn more money, and we common folk can definitely use an additional source of income to make life a bit more comfortable. Fortunately there are plenty of options available, like having sidejobs, working as a freelancer or using the internet to your advantage.

BECOME MORE POLITE Good manners have always been an important part of a civilized society. They make it easier to connect with others, avoid offending people and will ensure that others perceive you as a good and trustworthy person. So know the etiquette, be prepared or other manners in other countries, deal with rude people in the right way and learn how to say no.

MEET NEW PEOPLE When we get stuck in a rut, we usually end up staying at home most of the time, missing out on a lot of interesting opportunities for networking and having fun. Meeting new people can be beneficial to your mental well-being and help your career, so don’t be afraid to get out there and make some friends. Overcome your shyness, get some knowledge and go and get to know new and interesting people.

REDUCE STRESS They say that stress is one of the biggest killers out there, and it can have a very destructive effect on your relationships as well as your health. It may be an unavoidable side effect of our hectic modern lifestyles, but it can be effectively managed with the help of useful, unconventional and easy to practice tricks.

BECOME MORE ACTIVE Some people don’t really have a big weight problem, and they even get some exercise a few times a week, but they just sit around the most of the time at home and at work, which can have a negative effect on their posture and health. In that case, all you need is to find ways of moving around more throughout the day instead of staying hunched over the computer. It’s even more fun if you share your activity with friends and family.

LEARN TO BE HAPPIER WITH YOUR LIFE Even those that are in decent shape, make a good living and have stress under control can still be unhappy. It takes time and patience to learn how to find joy in the little things and not to let problems bring you down. 33

Our Health GET MORE QUALITY SLEEP With big TV’s, computers, smartphones, tablets and all sorts of gadgets with glowing lights and beeping alerts, it can be hard to get enough sleep at night. You should be gunning for at least 8 hours of sleep a night, and there are fairly simple ways to achieve this number if you make use of science and everday hacks.

GIVE UP CIGARETTES A bit of bad habit that a lot of people don’t know how to kick, smoking will not only endanger your health, but can burn a hole in your wallet as well. Just be prepared to dedicate a lot of will power to giving up cigarettes once and for all.

HAVE BETTER SEX Any healthy relationship requires a good deal of intimacy, and sex can actually help keep us mentally and physically healthy. The idea is to make it a fun and rewarding experience, and this is something that comes with practice and exercise.

WATCH LESS TV The average person wastes a lot of time in front of the TV, time that could have been better spent developing skills, learning or keeping your body active. Once you manage to cut down on TV time, you will realize just how long and productive a day can really be.

BECOME TIDIER There are a lot of slobs out there who can’t really get their stuff organized, and a cluttered desk or chaotic home will negatively affect your productivity and even your mood, so it helps to clear the clutter, clean your house and lead a tidier and more organized life.

READ MORE Books are an excellent way to gain a lot of knowledge on a huge variety of topics, and are also a great exercise for your brain. It’s not that difficult to go through 20 or more books in a year – you only need to make it a habit, discover your type of books and find a bit of time for reading here and there.

LEARN HOW TO DRESS WITH STYLE The way you dress can say a lot about you, and wearing the right clothes can make you seem powerful and confident, which in turn can help you land a job, get promoted, and catch the eye of a lovely guy or girl. No matter if you’re male or female, know the dresscode and live with style.

FIND A SIGNIFICANT OTHER We all need someone to hold at night, talk to and share our deepest secrets with, but finding the right person is a matter of trial and error. We need to go out and get to know a bunch of potential partners before we can find the one that we can get along with really well. Get inspired on your way towards love by these tips on the best places to meet people, asking someone out, and having an amazing and original first date.

SPEND MORE TIME WITH THE PEOPLE THAT MATTER There is just too little time in this life for us to waste it on insincere, duplicitous and toxic people. We should focus on the people who we care about deeply and who care about us, as this is the best way to stay happy. 34

Is anxiety holding you back? The chances are that while reading this, you are grabbing a few minutes to sit down and take a short break. The pace at which we live our lives is demanding: juggling work, family commitments and a busy diary of events can sometimes feel overwhelming. While we all feel anxious from time to time, anxiety can become excessive and persistent, with its psychological, emotional and physiological symptoms, such as ‘panic attacks’, impacting on our daily lives and those around us.

Hilary Sims - Life Balance

Hilary also helps people dealing with anger, depression, bullying, family breakdown, stress, low self-esteem, bereavement and trauma, listening, offering non-judgmental support and helping clients identify ways of dealing with situations. Therapy sessions take place at her practice or in the home or workplace. “A problem shared is indeed a problem halved. I believe we should all take time to focus on ourselves and affirm that we are living our lives in a balanced way. Being self-aware gives us the opportunity to address issues before they manifest into something bigger,” she adds.

Hilary Sims, a Registered Member of the British Association of Counselling and Psychotherapy and an Accredited Member of the National Counselling Society, is helping individuals of all ages, couples, families and employees of local businesses talk about anxiety and take positive action through her private practice, ‘Life Balance - Counselling Just For You’, based in Stourbridge.

Hilary is also experienced in working with senior school-aged children and young people, and says children can benefit hugely from talking therapies. “As a mum and through my work in a school environment, I have experienced first hand the pressures of growing up in an image-obsessed society, exam stress, family and relationship issues, social anxiety and fears about their future. Giving children the opportunity to talk about their feelings and helping them develop strategies to manage them doesn’t just benefit them in the short term; it raises self-esteem, instils in them the confidence to ask for help when they need it and the understanding that they can overcome any problems they encounter.”

“I give people a safe, confidential space to focus on themselves, explore the issues causing their anxiety, and regain control of their thoughts and behaviours through cognitive behavioural therapy (CBT), a collaborative intervention which involves talking and doing,” she explains. “We talk about things in the therapy room which are then practised between sessions.”

Hilary offers a free 30-minute introductory consultation. To book or for further information, call 07850 447585 or visit www.lifebalancecounselling.net

Our Showbiz News

Nick and Royston It may have been the most bizarre and unexpected year of our lifetimes, and reflecting back over 2020 certainly brings with it a mixture of emotions but, there are definitely moments to treasure and who better to catch up with than our fabulous duo Royston & Nick to find out their favourite highlights of 2020!

The Annual Staff Party The Royston Blythe annual staff party is a key date in the diary for our amazing team of hairdressers at Royston Blythe and this year was always going to be more fabulous than ever! We celebrated 30 years of our wonderful salon, Nick’s 60th birthday and Royston & Nick’s 35th Anniversary with a lavish & risqué themed Feather, Leather, Flesh & Whiplash event at The Park House, Shifnal. A half-naked man handcuffed to a double bed greeted guests and set the tone for the evening which was fun & fabulousness! Everyone looked sensational and partied through into the early hours with exclusive entertainment from the worldrenowned London/New York nightclub ‘The Box’ - they certainly added to the theme of the evening!!!! What else would you expect at a Royston Blythe party!!

The Lock Down. Over the months of lockdown, it was hard not to reflect on life and what`s really important to us all. After 30 years, running a very successful business and building a celebrity and media career, it gave Nick & Royston a rare commodity – Time off! Life became more simplistic, with the salons closed and their phones not ringing constantly, gave them chance to walk the dog, enjoy the fabulous weather and their homelife. For this workaholic duo, 2020 has been a time to appreciate their lives. As much as they love the high life, health, true friendships and loving what you do everyday, is what makes them truly happy. Thank you to our team, friends & clients for all your loyalty & support this and every year.

Our Showbiz News

National Hair Sunday Nick and Royston wanted to come up with a way of recognising the amazing efforts and say thank you to our frontline national health workers for everything they have done for our country, so National Hair Sunday was born. With all their contacts in the media, the industry and on social media to offer support and raise awareness, they quickly decided to make it a national campaign. They got to work asking hairdressers around the UK to commit to a free day of hairdressing for frontline workers. The response was unbelievable and they were supported by the entire hairdressing press, local press and over 1500 hair salons around the UK & Ireland including many of the biggest hairdressing groups in the country. National Hair Sunday was held on the first Sunday after lockdown. Frontline workers were invited to Royston Blythe and many salons all around the country for free hairdressing services as an enormous thank you! It was a wonderful day for everyone involved and being able to organise this for the NHS workers has to be Royston & Nick’s absolute highlight of 2020.

Cheshire Housewives After being given the thumbs up, filming of the Housewives of Cheshire was allowed to continue after the summer lockdown. Lots of fun and frolics with the Housewives kept Royston & Nick busy over the summer months! With hilarious moments, lavish garden parties and special get-togethers with the glamorous ladies have been aired on ITVBe’s Real Housewives Of Cheshire. The show has offered lots of light relief and entertainment over the autumn months. Let`s look forward to a happier, healthy and safer New Year for us all. 43

STOURBRIDGE RUGBY CLUB MOVING FORWARD format with only low leg tackling permitted, with reduced line-outs, with no scrums or mauls and with “ tap and go” restarts for knock-ons. There would be no pre or postmatch receptions, but spectators would be allowed and players would have to travel to games in cars. There is a lot of practical Covid related detail to be worked through, agreed and sanctioned. As a club we are keen to get any sort of competitive rugby back however remote from the real thing. We shall see how this concept develops and as it does our website will give full details.

Down here at Stourton Park we have spent the last six months navigating our path through the rigours of lockdown in its various and everchanging formats in order to keep as much rugby activity as possible constantly rigorously aware of governmental rules and of directives from the Rugby Football Union. Sixteen players in a scrum is the furthest extreme from social distancing anyone can imagine and you may wonder how Premiership and International games as seen on TV can be sanctioned. All of those teams and their support coaches and management undergo twice weekly testing at the cost of about £90 per test. Those sorts of expenses are way beyond the resources of community clubs. When Tier or lockdown restrictions allow all our age groups have been allowed to train regularly and improve their skills and fitness from Age 5 upward. Touch Rugby has been very welcome within the club whenever practical. We were able to re-engage with much of this from early December.

We are fortunate and grateful to have a loyal band of players ,members and sponsors who, despite the lack of rugby, have committed to supporting us through theses trying times by selfishly helping our revenues in a barren season, as much for now as for the future wellbeing of the club. Such goodwill is a reflection of the camaraderie of rugby. We wish you all a Happy, Prosperous and Healthy New Year.

There is currently for the senior teams a proposal from mid January for regional groups of six clubs to partake in a watered down

Edinburgh Castle (Crown Copyright Historic Environment Scotland)

EDINBURGH, BONNY SCOTLAND’S CAPITAL FOR A FAMILY CITY-BREAK. by Rebecca Underwood, Travel Journalist restaurant offers comfortable, casual dining, and I ordered the beef haggis with heather honey and turnip purèe and accompanied by a glass of 2019 Aires Andinos Malbec, it was an outstanding dish, served with aplomb.

The ‘staycation’ is more popular than ever as a result of Covid 19, and for families considering a city-break, Edinburgh, awarded Unesco World Heritage status in 1995, is ideal. On arrival, I checked into the Adagio Aparthotel, located on Cannongate, on the Royal Mile. The levels of comfort and service are first rate and the property features a private car park, a business hub, a fitness centre, and an on-site self-service laundry. The fully furnished and air-conditioned accommodations include double or twin bedded studios and I was fortunate to secure a one bedroom apartment. The fully equipped kitchen featured every gadget needed to whip up a time-saving meal. Alas, my culinary skills are sadly lacking and I headed, post-haste, for Makars Gourmet Mash Bar on Bank Street. Holyrood Palace - Credit - Visit Scotland, Kenny Lam walking distance to the Ocean Terminal. I selected a cosy table and ordered the delicious avocado toast with poached eggs and chilli flakes and whilst sipping on my lavender and lemon homemade soda, I browsed through some literature focused on Britannia.

I then took a stroll along to Holyrood Palace, which is the official residence of Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II, and it’s crammed with striking works of art, glittering trinkets, elaborate tapestries and treasures galore. From 1561 to 1567 the palace was home to Mary, Queen of Scots and later, to Prince Charles Edward Stuart, known as Bonnie Prince Charlie, grandson of the deposed Catholic King James VII of Scotland and II of England. Also known as ‘the Young Pretender’, he led a campaign, known as the Jacobite Risings, with the aim of overthrowing King George II and securing the British throne for the House of Stuart. In April 1746 he was defeated at the battle of Culloden and fled to the Outer Hebrides and then to Europe and a life in exile.

Britannia, launched and named by Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II on 16 April 1953, remained in service for 44 years and the Queen once stated; ‘Britannia is the one place I can truly relax.’ Alas, the vessel was de-commissioned in 1997 but it is now open to the public. I was keen to view the royal accommodations, which are surprisingly sparse, yet functional and cosy without glitz and glamour. The state dining room, which is the largest and grandest room aboard, is where Her Majesty the Queen and the Duke of Edinburgh entertained world leaders including Ronald Reagan, Margaret Thatcher, Sir Winston Churchill and Nelson Mandela.

Another major attraction, the Royal Yacht Britannia, is docked at the Ocean Terminal in Leith; only two miles from the city centre. En route I spotted the delightful Mimi’s Bakehouse, which is located on Shore, within 61

The Royal Yacht - Credit - Marc Millar Back on Britannia’s open decks admiring the views over the briny my appetite was awakened and I hailed a cab and headed for Dine, a chic, multi-award winning brasseriestyle venue, located above the Traverse Theatre on Cambridge Street. I chose the succulent loin of Perthshire venison with potato fondant, wild mushrooms, quince jelly and celeriac purèe, which was served with savoir faire. And accompanied by the 2016 Alpha Zeta a Amarone it was unforgettable.

and it was absolutely bursting with flavour. I spent some hours exploring the quirky shops and charming boutiques surrounding Rose Street and walking along George Street, I spotted the Hard Rock Café. Swiftly escorted to my table, I ordered the spicy baby back ribs, glazed with barbecue sauce, and I sipped on a rather potent hurricane cocktail. Exploring the café’s collection of memorabilia, I was delighted to see a non-refundable JFK to London air ticket to the value of $750, which was issued to Jimi Hendrix on 20 February 1970.

The following afternoon I visited Edinburgh’s New Town, which has retained much of the neo-classical and elegant Georgian period architecture, dating between 1767 and 1850. Browsing along Hanover Street I fancied a ‘wee dram’ and popped into Milne’s Bar, which dates back to 1910. I selected an outside table and ordered a shot of malt whisky to warm my cockles. The enticing aroma of fish n’ chips wafted under my nostrils and I succumbed to the Belhaven beer-battered Atlantic haddock

Feeling slightly tipsy on my return to the hotel, I spotted a lone piper, splendidly attired in his kilt and sporran, and I instantly recognised the wonderful song in remembrance of Bonnie Prince Charlie….. ‘Speed Bonnie Boat, like a bird on the wing, onward, the sailors cry, carry the lad that’s born to be king, over the sea to Skye’ 62

Our Pets

Wishing for those long sunny days to be near By Libby Williams MHAO AHDip Animal Healer and Holistic Therapist www.libbywilliams.co.uk info@libbywilliams.co.uk 07966 639671 There’s a nip in the air, the dark nights are here and we’re wishing for those long sunny days to be near.

Pets can get a bit fed up at this time of year just like we can, so why not make some fun puzzle games for them, there are many ideas or even readymade games on the internet to choose from, whatever species your furry one is I’m sure they’ll enjoy it. Mental stimulation is just as important as physical exercise so if you’re finding it hard to get out and about as much as you would like games are a good way to keep them stimulated and happy.

With our heating on and our curtains drawn, the air in the home can be quite dry and this can cause pets to have dry noses, dry throats and dry skin. It can also cause them and us to be itchy and possibly develop upper respiratory issues, we also dehydrate quicker when the central heating is on. It’s important to ensure that the house is kept properly ventilated and clean fresh water is always available for your furry ones, put a bowl of water in a couple of different rooms around the house to encourage them to have a drink.

When you do venture out of the house check cars before you start them as cats like to climb inside a car engine to keep warm. If you have a cat you may like to pop a litter tray down for them, they may prefer to stay indoors on particularly cold days. Wash your dogs’ feet off after a walk, especially if the gritters have been out because rock salt is actually harmful to dogs, it can cause burns/frostbite on their pads and may also make them poorly if they lick it off themselves.

Fresh air is so important and sunlight is vital for all mammals. Sunlight is important for overall health and wellbeing, so even though there is less of it at this time of the year get out in the daylight for a nice walk with your precious ones or potter around the garden if you can.

Please remember to spare a thought for the wildlife and pop some fresh water and food out for them if you can. Remember a fluffed-up bird doesn’t mean they are fat; they are trying to keep warm and could really use some food to give them energy to generate more body heat.

To give your cat and dog, as well as yourself, a nutritional boost and help fend off any grotty bugs that may be lurking, you could make a bone broth. After you’ve eaten your roast chicken, simply boil the chicken carcass up and simmer for a few hours, strain and then safely dispose of the bones so that animals can’t get to them. (Cooked chicken bones can be a dangerous choking hazard and can splinter). You are then left with the broth which is full of wonderful nutrients that may help give you and your furry ones a winter immune system boost. Offer your dog or cat a small amount on a separate saucer, you can serve it slightly warm, just tepid for them and do yourself a nice warm mug full too, ideal after that chilly daytime walk.

Keep warm, happy and healthy while you’re wishing for those long sunny days to be near! Do not feed bone broth if your dog or cat has related allergies or have any other medical issues that need to be taken into consideration. Always contact your veterinary surgeon if you are ever concerned about your pet or think that they may have ingested something toxic or something that has not agreed with them. 64

HONDA JAZZ EX HYBRID ensconced in. The very, very thin A pillars, i.e. the windscreen surrounds mean that all round visibility is exceptionally good and gives unrivalled forward visibility.

The Honda Jazz brought a unique approach to the city car market, its internal space belies its external dimensions and now nearly 20 years after the first incarnation of the Jazz the latest model has hit the street, writes Bob Hickman.

The engine choice in the Jazz is just one, a 1.5-litre petrol engine. This is allied to an electric motor, a reasonable amount of power being produced, sufficient to give a 0-60 in 9.5 seconds and a top speed where permissible of 108mph. Very low CO2 g/km figures of 83 for the EX test car and as low as 79 for the entry level SE. The fuel consumption figures are rather complicated, when you add in the electric and petrol derivative, suffice to say a combined figure of 61.4mpg could be achievable, or a high figure of 72.4mpg again dependant on how you analyse the figures. Suffice to say that in a week with a considerable amount of variable driving terrain, I achieved 58mpg which I think is exceptional.

It has been built to comply and be involved with green issues, it has an all-new ultra efficient hybrid powertrain and this results in exceptional results of economy, performance and a relaxed driving style. Honda has not dramatically changed the appearance and DNA of the Jazz, it is instantly recognisable as that derivative. The interior space is still exceptionally huge and with the magic seating arrangement there is a load carrying capacity vehicle that will astound you. The serious amount of glass in the interior of the vehicle is always a welcoming and environmental pleasant space to be 66

Our Motoring The range start with the SE which is the entry level at £18,985 and my test car the EX at £21,385. The SE version is well equipped but I think I would be spending a little extra for the EX trim. This gains a smart entry and start/stop system, 16” alloy wheels, heated steering wheel which has to be experienced to be believed, front seats are also electrically heated and it is equipped with a rear view camera and the navigation system with infotainment really is excellent.

The Jazz is a safe and dependable vehicle, the powertrain is responsive, not overly quick but encourages a relaxed rewarding driving style. The dashboard has been redesigned and has almost a minimalistic appearance, a lot of the information is contained within the 8” touchscreen in my derivative, but there is also a plethora of other information on the dashboard instrumentation. The Jazz will accommodate 5 adults at a push but it is more suited to 2 adults in the front and 2 in the back or 3 children in the back. The boot is adequate for the carrying capacity if you do drop the seats and they have a multichoice of ways of being done, the capacity increases dramatically.

FACTS AT A GLANCE MODEL TESTED • • •

All models within the Jazz range are equipped with ABS brakes, and a plethora of air bags, features also included as standard were a speed limiter, lane departure warning device, and various other items which include a traffic sign recognition system.

‘Steps in the right direction’

Siobhan Record Our Lifestyle’s Financial Expert

Our attention has increasingly been drawn to the issue of ‘sustainability’ by campaigners such as Sir David Attenborough and Greta Thunberg. Climate change, the habitat destruction of palm oil farming, ocean plastic, zero contract hours, child labour and income inequality are amongst the many challenges that we face in the world.

insights. In time, ESG data should improve becoming deeper and wider in scope and coverage, along with the ability to measure the impact more insightfully. New product development in the systematic ESG space is growing exponentially and the quality and availability of these products will also continue to grow. It’s an exciting time for investors who want to make a difference.

Many people have already made changes that affect their daily lives that can and will make small yet meaningful differences. These range from running more fuel-efficient cars to buying more locally produced product and avoiding companies with poor records on employment.

If you ask yourself if you want your (or others’) children and grandchildren to live in a better world which has tackled climate change, reduced pollution on land and in our oceans, helped to abolish child labour and produced a more equitable society, the answer is obvious. For some, using their investment portfolios as one of the many ways in which they can make a small, yet meaningful difference alongside others, then systematic ESG investing may be a choice worth considering.

One area that has largely been ignored is the opportunity to improve the ‘sustainability’ of investment portfolios and the companies owned within them. Moving to a more sustainable approach to investing is a journey to be taken in small, careful steps. The investment industry tends to talk about ESG metrics, which stands for environmental, social and governance issues faced by companies and the data available is improving as companies are being driven by investors to deliver clearer and more timely

Talbots Law, which employs over 240 people across six offices in Codsall, Dudley, Halesowen, Kidderminster, Stourbridge and Wolverhampton, has seen a 33% rise in the number of cases it has supported during the last twelve months. This has been driven in part by the area of contested probate, with Covid-19 unfortunately causing a lot of people to die unexpectedly without having time to make a will.

Philippa will use her significant experience in this area of law to boost the firm’s provision and is part of a dedicated four-strong team that are helping people across the region to find resolutions in these areas.

“It is our role to listen to them, understand the issues and carefully guide them through the legal process in a way that leads to the correct outcome.”

She has specific expertise in the Inheritance Act 1975, will validity disputes, proprietary estoppel/constructive trust claims, actions to remove and/or substitute executors and trustees.

Jagdip Bains, Director at Talbots Law, concluded: “Philippa is our third new appointment this year and is a fantastic addition to the company, giving us knowledge and experience in contested probate.

“Talbots is a local firm with a great reputation for its approach to client care, something that I feel very strongly about,” explained Philippa, who joins from George Green LLP.

“The lockdown has presented a number of challenges and an increase in demand and our team has adapted quickly to the new norm. We have hosted virtual seminars on dispute resolution, engaged in online mediations, achieved a successful injunction to preserve estate funds and a positive outcome on a 3-day virtual trial arising from funds that were removed from an estate.”

“I am very passionate about this area of law and understand that for many families losing a loved one is hard and the emotional distress is compounded significantly when a dispute arises in relation to their estate. 74
