Happy New Year! By Jane de Weijer : Make Space Interiors ltd contact: jane@makespaceinteriors.co.uk
It is the time of year to throw out the old and bring in the new, so if you are planning to redecorate, look no further than the exciting new colour palettes announced as the Pantone colours and trends for 2020. A NEW ERA ‘2020 is both a new era and a new dawn. The new era is a time when muted and vibrant shades can be used together to create original and exciting new Interiors.’ Leatrice Eiseman, colour expert and executive director of the Pantone Colour Institute. In the new colour publication for 2020, Colour in the New Era: Trends, Twists and Tweaks, Pantoneview Home + Interiors 2020, and in a keynote address given at the 2019 International Home + Housewares Show, Leatrice suggests that the new trends for 2020 include: • Monochrome: “Black and white striping used with another pattern is one of the newest and hottest trends.” It will be a great accent to your patterns and colour schemes. • Metallics: “I’ve never seen so much sparkle in the marketplace.” Metallics in fabrics, tiles and finishes are still a trend for the new era. Pantone has also just produced a new colour deck, solely with shimmery hues to reflect the continuing interiors obsession with all that glisters.
ON THE SHINE ON BOARD Left to Right: The Pantone range of metallics created to complement the current hot interior materials. I love this blown glass copper pendant and copper metal dining chair, both from www.cultfurniture.com. 8
Our Home Don’t forget the monochrome stripes to add the 2020 twist: St James Stripe fabric by Clarke & Clarke, www.janeclayton.co.uk, can be used on blinds or footstools to add contrast. Add artwork to the walls: this large metallic frame with marble print from www.culturefurniture.com is completely on trend for your new-era room. For high impact statement walls, this metallic Mosaic Dapple paper by Zoffany wall coverings, www. stylelibrary.com, will make the impact. Add marble on tiles and tabletops, such as Carrera Polished Marble, www.toppstiles.co.uk. Finally, accessories include the luxe emerald green velvet cushion, adding shine and style to your sparkly space, from www.cultfurniture.com.
2020 ADDITIONS On-trend materials include marble, which is still the leading stone finish for the new decade and an easy addition for a quick update. Add marble to give accessories, tabletops in kitchens and bathrooms an instant update and it looks great if you combine metallic materials with rich woods. “There’s a real marriage of the warmth of rich patina wood and (the cool, sleekness of ) metallics,” Leatrice Eiseman. (See my Metropolis board.) We’ll also see more texture, while hand crafted will still be a key trend, especially felted products, birds and feathers (the more exotic and frivolous the better!). Colour, shade and fun are definitely on the menu for the new era.
9
Our Home PANTONE COLOUR OF 2020 If you are keen on strong and vibrant colours, this is your year. The colour of the year is a flame red, combined with bright hues and shades, as well as navy and white and ash grey neutrals. For a calming space, aqua greens combine beautifully with relaxed denim blues and sunshine yellows, while mustards and muted earthy purples team up to create an earthy warm ‘handcrafted’ palette.
Be bold, it’s a new decade.
TOP TRENDS Pantone has defined eight colour palettes based on these colours, with combinations to suit a wide scope of tastes and moods. I’ve created boards for two of the top trends for home and interiors 2020. I hope they inspire you. I’ve also included a few palettes to look out for. • Metropolis –a mix of glamour and industrial chic. • Trekking – an appreciation of the outdoors, with flannel and well-worn denim. • Skill Set – “an appreciation of things that are hand-made, hand-thrown pottery, hand-tooled leather,” Leatrice Eiseman, 2019. • Prints Charming – including patterns, bright blue, red and yellow combined with umber browns and minted green; black and white provide contrast to it all. • Beyond the Pale – “about taking pastels and kicking them up a notch,” says Eiseman. It’s about smoky greens, a mid-tone infinity blue, and a contrasting tawny-brown. • Tempered Tastes – incorporates some shimmery metallic, including Pantone’s Gold Leaf, as seen on the Shine On board. • Show Stoppers – this palette is packed with vibrant hues such as bright blues, yellows and purples. Compare it to a ‘colourful mix of jelly beans’. • Tea Garden – evoking the calm and natural beauty of a Japanese tea ceremony, this thoughtful palette features blue in the shades of sky and sea, serene greens, lavender, yellow-green, and a touch of mango.
10
Our Home My 2020 Metropolis board includes rich earthy shades, with plenty of strong metallic textures and black and white monochrome contrasts.
Left to Right: Create plenty of texture. This wallpaper by Cole and Sons, Historic Royal Library Panel, creates the illusion of a panelled wall, www.cole-and-son.com. Go bold with light fittings, www. cultfurniture.com. Accessories including patina metal finish on this number 1, prop it up on a shelf for an eclectic shelf arrangement. Introduce natural elements: this fabric by Sanderson, www.style library.com, includes plant motifs, which are very much on trend for 2020. Enhance a fireplace wall with a metal finish wall covering – I love this aged brass tile effect from the metals range by Muraspec, www.muraspec.com. Add a splash of the new rich reds, with a pop of colour on your window roller blind, www.blinds2go.com, and include contrast fabrics such as rich mustard linens and dogtooth checks in warm olive greens. Find these linens at www.bernardthorp.co.uk. Go dark with wood colours: this side table with copper detailing will complement the theme Portobello bed side table, www.mufti.co.uk Go retro with a palm plant. I have included the black and white theme here as wall or floor tiles, but also look to include a contrast on upholstery or blinds. The shelf mirror would be a perfect addition with its heavy industrial styling, essential for the new Metropolis interior. Find this one from a selection at www.rockettstgeorge.co.uk.
11
Our Home In contrast the Japanese Tea Room is inspired by calm Oriental shades and natural textures. Feather textures and birds all feature heavily in this palette.
It’s all about the textures. I have included silks for curtains and blinds in aqua greens, soft pinks, and earthy amber tones. Add floral wallpapers, stylised with touches of colour and include vintage prints of birds, flowers, combined with decorative plates to add contrast and create an eclectic, calming space . Left to Right: A collection of faux silks for curtains and soft furnishings from a selection at www. candh.co.uk. Combine all the colours, mix and match, and don’t forget to add depth with earthy tones for a 2020 finish. Try a paper pendant shade for an ethereal accent; I love this Issy shade from www.johnlewis.com.
How about floral statement wallpaper? This Orchid is from www.cole-and-sons.com. I love this decorative, butterfly wall plate from a collection at www.etsy.com, and it will look super as a contrast to the deep earthy amber upholstery on this chair by Boconcept, www.boconcept.com. To explore the latest Pantone trends visit www.pantone.com. Meanwhile if you need help to realise the latest trends, want advice or just collate ideas and mood boards I offer a full interior design service. HOME STYLING TIPS FOR SELLING
by Daniel Thomas
To sell your house quickly and for a great price, you need to style it effectively for potential buyers. First impressions really matter and this is also the case in the property world. Potential buyers are looking for a home to spend the rest of their lives and as such, you need to make it as easy as possible for them to imagine themselves living there. topiary for a welcoming feel. A wreath is also a great way to make the entrance to your home welcoming. You don’t need to spend a fortune to create something really effective.
1. Remove the clutter and clean the house The first step in styling your home effectively is to make sure that it is clean and free of clutter. There should be a smooth flow when potential buyers pay you a visit. If necessary, rent some storage space for all your collectables and personal items – depersonalising it is key, but don’t make it look sterile. Clean the house thoroughly; this means every surface in the home, including floors, walls, windows, ceiling, and corners. Check for cobwebs on the ceiling and remove them as potential buyers may mistake innocent webs for a full-blown spider problem.
3. Apply a fresh coat of paint Painting is a small expense that will bring you a huge return on your investment. Paint helps to hide physical flaws on your home, but when it comes to choosing a paint colour, pick neutral shades – you don’t want potential buyers being put off by some extreme choices.
4. Decorate the rooms effectively The kitchen, bedrooms, and baths get a lot of attention from potential buyers, so really make an effort to decorate and style them effectively. A fruit basket and a cookbook are ideal decorations for the kitchen. Put fresh white linen on the beds and some scatter cushions for a neat look. For the bathrooms, get some fresh towels and change the soap dispenser.
2. Create a nice entrance Obviously, potential buyers will see the door and the front porch first, so make sure that the entrance has been styled for added kerb appeal. Scrub and repaint the front door so it shines and is inviting. Add a planter or a fresh 24
regularly. Replace them every week – it will look awful if you have half-dead blooms in a vase.
5. Fresh flowers for your home Adding fresh flowers is another effective styling trick and these can be bought very cheaply or from your local florist or grocer. Strategically locate them in the middle of the room for the best effect and top up the water
If you want to sell your home quickly, styling it is essential. Talk to us today and let us guide you through your property journey. 25

Our Travel
Bienvenido a Las Palmas de Gran Canaria by Rebecca Underwood, Travel Journalist Gran Canaria, the third largest of the Spanish Canary Islands, covers 602 square miles and is located in the Atlantic Ocean, only 93 miles off the north western coastline of Africa.
As a complete novice, I focused my attention on Las Palmas, which was founded in 1478 and is the largest capital in the Canary Islands. I headed for Las Canteras beach, a protected area and diving site, which lies in the heart of the city and exudes the distinctive ‘vibe’ of mainland Spain. ‘Surfer dudes’ from far and wide gather and they are all seeking to ride the perfect wave, taking advantage of the prevailing trade winds.
It is known as the miniature continent due to its varied landscape, long stretches of beach, sand dunes, deep ravines and different climates. The island’s volcanic interior is made up of 32 protected sites and more than one third of the total area has been recognised as a UNESCO Biosphere Reserve.
I spotted several groups of inexperienced surfers at a well-known point named La Circer, which is the ideal place to learn as there are plenty of schools for beginners in the local area. After some deliberation, and watching surfers tumbling into the ocean with arms and legs flailing, my courage deserted me. I remained on terra firma, and embarked on a leisurely stroll along the wide promenade beside the shoreline. Many local families of all generations were dining al fresco, bathed in the warmth of the sunshine, whilst hordes of laughing children were playing on climbing frames in a spacious outdoor playground.
Unsurprisingly, the 4.5 million annual tourists include an increasing number of sports enthusiasts, including cyclists, quad bikers, hikers and rock climbers – all eager to explore the natural environment whilst honing their skills. Gran Canaria is also a popular spot for all types of nautical sports. Windsurfers are drawn to Pozo Izquierdo beach, the site of the annual Gran Canaria Wind and Waves Festival, which is held in July and attracts the very best competitors in the world, including local champions and twin sisters Daida and Iballa Ruano, recipients of 27 world titles.
Up with the larks the following morning, I headed for the Real Club de Golf, which is 28
Our Travel trees, and there are numerous pieces of art that demanded my undivided attention. The Casa de Colon: is popular attraction. It is a museum dedicated to Christopher Columbus who, under the patronage of the King Ferdinand and Queen Isabella of Spain, accomplished four voyages across the Atlantic Ocean is also a popular attraction. In 1492, Columbus anchored his armada of three ships, La Niña, La Santa Maria and La Pinta, in the Port of Las Palmas during his first voyage to America. It is said that Columbus stayed in the Casa de Colón, which was rebuilt in 1777 and now features fine lattice balconies, elaborate doorways and spacious, peaceful courtyards. Exhibits within the 13 rooms include an extensive selection of impressive paintings, a fascinating replica La Niña cabin, navigation equipment, and other maritime treasures and I spent ages poring over nautical charts and maps.
Real Club de Golf de Las Palmas within the Bandama Natural Park and only about 10 miles from Las Palmas. Founded in 1891, the Real Club de Golf is located beside a crater of an extinct volcano, 1968 feet (600 metres) above sea level, and it is the oldest course in Spain. Designed by the Scottish architect Philip Mackenzie Ross, the first president of the British Association of Golf Course Architects and the designer of the Alisa Course in Ayr, the Real Club de Golf’s first nine of its 18 holes (Par 71) were constructed to take the prevailing breeze into consideration and throughout my leisurely round I was consistently distracted by the spectacular surrounding views of deep ravines, the volcano’s soaring summit and the ocean blue.
Following my own explorations I headed back to my spacious, airy and air-conditioned accommodation located right on Las Canteras promenade. Featured on the HomeAway website, the apartment comprises one double
Later that afternoon I returned to Las Palmas and set off to explore the city’s Plaza de Santa Ana in the historic district of Vegueta. I paused awhile to admire the splendid buildings of the old Town Hall and then visited the magnificent Cathedral de Santa Ana, which is the city’s most popular attraction. Initially constructed in 1500 at the command of King Ferdinand II of Aragon and Queen Isabella I of Castile and then refurbished and reconstructed during the 1700s, it is a mesmerising example of Gothic, Renaissance and Neoclassical architectural styles. The structure features two soaring campaniles and a beautiful rose window and I was fortunate to see the rich colours of the stained glass windows illuminated by the sunlight. The cathedral’s interior features several striking columns that resemble palm

After buying my groceries I changed my mind about cooking and headed for VIPS, a trendy restaurant on the ground floor, sampling the delicious barbecue ribs, served with crunchy onion rings, fries and a chipotle barbecue sauce, accompanying my meal with a glass of Marqués de Grinon Crianza. I held my glass aloft in honour of Christopher Columbus and reflected on his words: “By prevailing over all obstacles and distractions, one may unfailing arrive at his chosen goal or destination”.

METHOD • Top and tail the squash then cut down the middle lengthways and spoon out the seeds. Peel if you want to and cut into 1 inch chunks. • Spray the squash with low cal oil and place on a baking sheet, season with salt, pepper and rosemary, and bake for about 30 minutes or until soft and browning a little. • Peel and finely dice the shallots and ginger and sweat off with a little rapeseed oil in a pan on medium heat. Finely slice the coriander stalks and add to the mix. • Remove the shallot mixture from the pan, leaving any oil you can behind and turn the heat to full. Add the chicken breasts and a little spray of oil if the pan is too dry. Brown the chicken breasts on both sides and put on a baking sheet / roasting tin. Roast in the oven for about 18 minutes. • While the chicken is roasting, reheat the coriander stalks, shallots and ginger and add the roast squash, leaving a few chunks for garnish. • Add the turmeric, sea salt and black pepper, plus the vegetable stock and coconut milk. Once heated through, use the hand blender to purée the contents. If it is still too runny, simmer it until it reduces down to your desired thickness. • Remove the corn from the cob and steam for a few minutes. • If you want to use the chicken skin you will need two identical baking sheets. Line one with parchment and stretch the skin apart so it lies as flat as possible. Season, trim the skin if there is too much fat. Place another piece of parchment over the top of the skin then place the other tray on the top to keep the skin flat as it cooks. Roast for about 20 minutes until crisp. • Pass the soup through a sieve to make a smooth soup (or leave it as is with a few lumps and bumps that escape the blending process). • Pour the soup into bowls, carve the chicken breast at an angle and sit in the soup, garnish with fresh coriander leaves, sweetcorn and thinly sliced red chilli. • If you are using the chicken skin, break it into shards or chop it into small bits with fresh chives and sprinkle over your soup just before serving just liberally sprinkle all over the breast and finish with a clump of fresh chives. • Serve with some freshly baked sourdough bread and low-fat spread. 33

ROASTED SALMON FILLET With greens and boiled eggs. Serves 6.
INGREDIENTS 1kg of fresh salmon fillet, skin on 9 blue shell eggs 1 packet of tender stem broccoli 1 packet of mange tout 1 small bag of spinach 1 packet of large watercress 1 small bunch of flat leaf parsley 1 bottle of low calorie salad dressing Maldon sea salt
EQUIPMENT Roasting tray 1 medium size pan 1 mixing bowl Parchment paper Iced water bath Spider or slotted spoon

USEFUL INFO Pre-heat oven to 180C Cooking time: up to 30 minutes Preparation time: 15 minutes METHOD • Put a piece of parchment paper on a baking tray and lay the salmon skin side down on that. Season with Maldon sea salt and roast in the oven for about 30 minutes (this can differ depending on the thickness of the salmon). • While the salmon is roasting, cook the green vegetables for about 1 minute each, remove and plunge into iced water to stop the cooking process. Drain and set aside. • When there is about 10 minutes’ roasting time left on the salmon, put the eggs carefully into the vegetable water and boil for 6 minutes. Remove and carefully take the shells off under the cold running tap to stop the heat burning your fingers. • Wash and dry the spinach and watercress. Toss with the greens and dress with the salad dressing. • Slice the eggs in half - you should have a soft and runny orange egg yolk. • To assemble, place the dressed greens in your salad bowl, place 3 egg halves around and using a spoon pull the flecks of salmon away from the skin and drop into the salad. • Serve with a lovely refreshing glass of naturally carbonated spring water. Happy New Year! 35

Welcome to the Roe Deer
Sitting on the outskirts of Wordsley, Stourbridge, the Roe Deer was once a family home called Lawnswood House. Built during the reign of King George III between 1813 and 1816 it contains many beautiful attributes of the Regency style, including wonderful high ceilings and huge casement windows that flood the rooms with natural light, a grand staircase and rooms to squirrel away in next to stunning fireplaces, some of which overlook the historic garden. This beautiful, landmark building now has a large bar at the heart of the building, packed with an ever-growing collection of gins and malts, an array of ever-changing local ales and a fine wine collection that complements our daily menu. Outside there is a stone terrace to the front, which enjoys sunsets framed by the grand old trees, and views out across the lawn and the fields beyond. Upstairs, enjoying the same views, you will find a private dining room, which will comfortably seat 14, perfect for larger family gathering or smaller business meeting. We would love for you to join us in the new year, whether you're gathering as a family or for an office get-together or just popping in to reward yourself with a warming drink and a moment's peace by the fire. Find us on Facebook - Facebook.com/roedeerpub - to keep up to date with all of our festive plans. Jon and the team are on hand to welcome you, your family and friends and even your dog. Is anxiety holding you back? Hilary Sims - Life Balance
Hilary also helps people dealing with anger, depression, bullying, family breakdown, stress, low self-esteem, bereavement and trauma, listening, offering non-judgmental support and helping clients identify ways of dealing with situations. Therapy sessions take place at her practice or in the home or workplace.
The chances are that while reading this, you are grabbing a few minutes to sit down and take a short break. The pace at which we live our lives is demanding: juggling work, family commitments and a busy diary of events can sometimes feel overwhelming. While we all feel anxious from time to time, anxiety can become excessive and persistent, with its psychological, emotional and physiological symptoms, such as ‘panic attacks’, impacting on our daily lives and those around us.
“A problem shared is indeed a problem halved. I believe we should all take time to focus on ourselves and affirm that we are living our lives in a balanced way. Being self-aware gives us the opportunity to addressing issues before they manifest into something bigger,” she adds.
Hilary Sims, a Registered Member of the British Association of Counselling and Psychotherapy and an Accredited Member of the National Counselling Society, is helping individuals of all ages, couples, families and employees of local businesses talk about anxiety and take positive action through her private practice, ‘Life Balance - Counselling Just For You’, based in Stourbridge.
Hilary is also experienced in working with senior school-aged children and young people, and says children can benefit hugely from talking therapies. “As a mum and through my work in a school environment, I have experienced first hand the pressures of growing up in an image-obsessed society, exam stress, family and relationship issues, social anxiety and fears about their future. Giving children the opportunity to talk about their feelings and helping them develop strategies to manage them doesn’t just benefit them in the short term; it raises self-esteem, instils in them the confidence to ask for help when they need it and the understanding that they can overcome any problems they encounter.”
“I give people a safe, confidential space to focus on themselves, explore the issues causing their anxiety, and regain control of their thoughts and behaviours through cognitive behavioural therapy (CBT), a collaborative intervention which involves talking and doing,” she explains. “We talk about things in the therapy room which are then practised between sessions.”
Hilary offers a free 30-minute introductory consultation. To book or for further information, call 07850 447585 or visit www.lifebalancecounselling.net

RACE ROUND THE WORLD An intrepid member of a Clipper Round the World Yacht Race team inspired pupils and staff from Winterfold School when he gave a talk in a special school assembly.
swam under and around the boat, to whales, sea turtles, albatross and even the birds that would stop to rest for a few days en route to their final destination.
George Blakeway, who was a member of the Ha Long Bay Viet Nam team, spent 30 days in the race, sailing the Portugal to Uruguay leg.
Mr Blakeway told the school that “the best part was spending time with the team on the yacht, albeit sometimes in difficult conditions. We are now friends for life”.
Pupils were enthralled by the presentation and they learned about the tough conditions that are often experienced at sea, particularly with a 30/40 degree tilt of the yacht and a fast speed the equivalent of 29.7 mph. Cooking on board, they were told, was particularly tricky.
Towards the end of the race, team Ha Long Bay Viet Nam knew they were in line for third place, but when they passed through the Doldrums, the wind dropped completely. All they could do was wait as their competitors began to catch them up. Finally, the wind picked up and they made it to third place and a place on the podium.
The children were intrigued by the fact that there was no shower on board, which meant that for the month the crew were on board, they used sea water to keep clean. The team of 21 worked four hours on, four hours off, with half on deck racing the boat and the other half either sleeping or eating.
At the end of the talk, the children enjoyed a Q and A session, with questions ranging from “Did the team get sea sick?” to “Can fish really fly?”
Despite the hard work and being constantly wet, Mr Blakeway described how the team loved the various forms of sea life they encountered, from the 150 dolphins that
Mr Blakeway’s final words - “Be curious and find your own adventure”- were an excellent way to sum up an excellent motivational talk.

We also welcomed Ultra White Collar Boxing, and KWON Grand Slam, which was three-part tournament endorsed by the World Kickboxing and Karate Union.
Keep an eye on the website for more exciting events – there are already a few tribute nights confirmed that take advantage of the vast outdoor space the conference centre offers, while the Colour Obstacle Rush and Outdoor Cinema have already re-booked for 2020 after their incredible successes over the past three years.
Raceday visitors have loved the venue’s wide range of package and price options and we’re pleased to report that bookings for the restaurant are growing year on year. WINTER WEDDINGS There is nothing more romantic than a winter wedding: snow on the ground, frost in the air and tree bowers dripping with frozen crystals, while inside is warm and cosy with glowing open fires, twinkling candlelight and winter foliage.
If your wedding or reception is in a remote area, leave enough time in the schedule for people to get to the destination, just in case bad weather slows them down. It might be worth having your ceremony and reception at the same venue, to save your guests from additional travels if there is bad weather.
Winter used to be considered the “off season”, but venues have now wised up to the fact that it is a popular time of year to marry. That means prices can be the same as peak season, especially the week between Christmas and New Year. So if you’re planning a winter wedding, it’s best to embrace the season and use what is readily available to you.
Check with the venue to make sure that there is sufficient matting at the entrance point, so that guests can wipe their shoes and not tread slushy footprints inside, and try to book somewhere that has plenty of space between the main entrance and the access to the reception room. That way, you’ll keep the reception area toasty and warm.
Make sure your venue works in the winter
A cloakroom (and if possible a cloak room attendant) is also important, so that guests can leave their belongings, such as heavy coats and scarves, safely.
If you are planning a winter wedding, it’s important to view the venue in the winter to see how it works in the colder months. If you are attracted to venues that offer open fires with large ornate fireplaces to enhance the wintery theme, remember to ask the venue manager when you are viewing if the fires are working and can be lit. It’s also worth checking to see if you can have candles as many venues do not allow naked flames. (If you’re not allowed, don’t worry, use storm lanterns, which, when wreathed in winter foliage, look just the part.)
Hotels will have sufficient heating, but it is worth checking to see if venues such as marquees or church halls have heating in place. Conversely, when the disco starts up it can get hot and sticky, so check with the venue manager to see if the heating can be reduced in that particular area.
Decoration
There are plenty of ways to decorate your venue to create a warm and cosy atmosphere. With the sun setting early in the winter months, candles and crystals add to wintery
When booking the venue, take care to avoid any cold-weather mishaps. Make sure that your guests can actually get to the venue and that there is sufficient parking. 50
Our Weddings romance to any setting. To add to the ambience, consider bringing in lush, soft textures: deep red, velvety roses set among dark green foliage, such as holly (especially with the red berries), will add a touch of luxury to the setting. Enhance this with wide velvet ribbon that you can tie around napkins or centrepieces. You could even tie the ribbon to the chairs and hang themed decorations, such a wooden hearts or crystal snowflakes.
carefully about your accessories. You will need to keep warm and you certainly want to avoid shivering your way through your photography session. Enveloping yourself in a stole, warm shawl or cashmere wrap will add heaps of charm and keep you toasty. Look to the more substantial fabrics, such as velvet or faux fur, to complement your gown and embellish your winter wonderland look. Choose shoes carefully. Go for a close-toed style (strappy heels could be hazardous if there is snow) as there might be ice – or even worse – slush on the ground. A pair of white boots that will peep out from under you dress could also work – it will ensure you are sure footed, but you could always change into heels once you are safely at the reception venue. If snow is forecast, buy a pair of white snow boots that you can change in and out of to travel between venues - fun for the photographs, too!
What to wear
If ever there was an excuse to use vibrant colours, such as forest greens, deep crimsons and brilliant whites, then certainly winter is the season to do it. You can also use heavier fabrics – velvet or sensual silk satins – or if you prefer lace, a heavier variety such as Battenberg lace is more substantial and will keep you warmer. The best part of winter wedding fashion is that you can indulge in luxurious full skirts without the fear of getting too hot or weighed down with the extra fabric. Choose a style of dress that has sleeves for extra protection and warmth – ¾ sleeves in particular can look very feminine
Add gloves for a touch of Hollywood glamour and choose a colour that complements your flowers or theme. Perhaps dress your groom in a slick suit and add a scarf in the same colour as your gloves to match the wedding colour theme.
Accessories
If you still want to wear a shoulder-baring strapless gown or slinky sheath, think
Winter Treats
Winter weddings give you the opportunity to serve your guests something different and seasonal. Serve an alternative reception drink, such as mulled wine served with mini mince pie or Winter Pimms with gingerbread men. Or, for sheer decadence, serve a white hot chocolate with marshmallow dips. For the favours, choose pots of homemade hedgerow jam or jars of chutney or pickle. Alternatively, bag up snowflake shortbread biscuits piped in white icing and tied with a ribbon in your wedding colours. With careful planning, you can enjoy all the usual wedding traditions bundled up in a festive winter theme.

LET’S TALK LASER HAIR REMOVAL Permanently removing unwanted hair is an issue that men and women have been tackling for years. Popular solutions such as shaving, waxing, sugaring, threading are non-permanent and regular treatments are required. However, laser hair removal is becoming the preferred choice for everyone because it is permanent and relatively painfree.
Lisa Evans Reid Clinical Director at Reflect
There are a few factors to consider before deciding if it is for you.
Skin type Laser treatment will work on all skin colours but the number of treatments required depends on your skin type and the colour of your hair. Your skin type varies with your ethnicity and origins, and most skin clinics use a skin type guide called the Fitzpatrick scale 1 to 6 (1 Being the lightest skin to 6 being black Afro/ Caribbean skin). Because the laser puts energy into colour, it means the darker the skin, the trickier it can get. The Fitzpatrick scaling system is relatively accurate for establishing your skin type and the number of treatments you require.
Not all lasers remove hair and some lasers have different wavelengths that treat other skin issues. So when it comes to hair removal, your skin type, hair colour plus your therapist’s knowledge all play a major part in your laser hair removal treatments. Another factor is that some lasers are relatively pain free and others can be quite... ouch! Here’s our expert guide to help you before you consider parting with your money.
Hair colour
Time scale for treatment examples are
During laser hair removal, a laser emits a light that is absorbed by the pigment (melanin, which is what gives you the colour in the hair and skin). The light energy is absorbed in the melanin to create heat, which damages the growth structure (hair follicles) that produce hairs. This damage inhibits or delays future hair growth.
If you have western European origins, your skin tone will be fairly light and your hair dark, which means you could be a skin type 2. You may only require six to eight treatments because the laser can find the dark hair and isn’t distracted by darker skin. However, if you're of of Asian origin, you could be skin type 5 on the Fitzpatrick scale. You will require more treatments than lighter skinned clients because the laser will focus on the darker skin colour as well as the hair. For the laser to be effective only on the hair colour, the correct laser wavelength needs to be selected
If you have greying or white hair then I’m afraid laser hair removal isn’t for you. Sorry, but the science of laser means that it can only destroy what it can find! Grey and white hair have no pigment (melanin) so therefore there’s no colour... 58

Here is a simple guide to what you need to do:
and a lower energy used, so more treatments are required.
• Check that the therapist has recognised training in line with British Medical Laser Association standards
It is essential for your skin type to be assessed properly. If you do not, your treatment could result in damage, such as hyper/hypo pigmentation, stimulation of hair follicles or, worse still, burns to the surface of the skin.
• Expect your therapist to talk you through your skin type • Expect to have a patch test
Safety check list when considering laser hair removal
• Expect to be given safety googles to wear during your treatments
There are other factors to consider when choosing laser hair removal, such as specific medication you are taking and certain medical conditions. It is vital to have a full consultation and a patch test before embarking on a course of treatments.
• Go by referrals, and read reviews online before embarking on treatment.
Inferior lasers Inferior cheap copies of many electrical goods are available, and this includes lasers. The premium brands have passed all the international safety tests and are usually high quality, whereas the manufacturing processes in the cheaper versions are unlikely to be as rigorous and laser therapy training can also often be poor quality or non-existent.
When you carry out online research for laser hair removal treatments, it’s easy to get bogged down with all the jargon, plus there are the usual horror stories and images of poor-quality treatments.
In life as with lasers, you get what you pay for!

NEW EARS FOR NEW YEARS We can’t give you back your old hearing, but we can get close
We put our clients at the centre of everything we do and that isn’t just a fancy statement designed to convince you to come and see us; it’s what we live and breathe every single day. We believe our excellent customer care programme makes us different from the standard high street hearing experience and and it's what keeps people coming back to us for support.
It’s true, we can’t give you your old hearing hearing, back, but we can protect it for the future and ensure you are mentally switched on to the sounds around you and fully involved in all of the conversations that matter.
You will be less tired using hearing aids
The top 3 things were:
Our clients often complain that not hearing is far more tiring than hearing well with hearing aids. When you are struggling to hear and having to concentrate it can drain your energy and affect your lifestyle negatively. Using hearing aids can give you a new lease of life and these days, when you have them, people will comment on how well you are hearing all of a sudden without even knowing you are wearing devices to help you!
• Turning the TV up too loud and annoying a partner
You will find social situations a joy again
We love to receive feedback from our clients. This helps us to improve our service and ensure we are doing our very best to help everyone we can to hear better than ever. We asked our clients to tell us what they struggled with the most in everyday life before they got their new hearing aids.
It is common for people who struggle to hear to start to back away from social engagements in order to avoid embarrassment. This can often create all sorts of other issues, affecting lifestyles and relationships so it’s fantastic to be able to give someone the gift of hearing.
• Saying pardon too often and then stopping being involved in social situations • Being frustrated in noisy environments To make 2020 your year for better hearing, we wanted to explain a little about how having hearing aids is so much more beneficial than you might think.

SHOCKINGLY EFFECTIVE Non-surgical solutions for persistent problems
Extracorporeal Shock Wave Therapy (ESWT) is a non-invasive treatment involving a handheld device that is applied outside the body, to introduce energy to painful areas, promoting the body to heal itself.
The treatment is not completely pain free and patients may feel some discomfort during treatment, but it should be tolerable. Due to the analgesic effect of Shockwave Therapy many patients report immediate pain relief following treatment.
Regardless of the cause, injuries can be debilitating and, if left untreated, may affect your daily life. Shockwave is a non-surgical option for a wide variety of conditions, with no downtime.
The treatment has been used to treat a variety of conditions, including Achilles Tendonitis and Medial Tibial Stress Syndrome (shin splints), as well as Epicondylitis (tennis or golfers’ elbow) and even Greater Trochanteric Pain Syndrome (hip and back pain).
Many people think that the only option for a long-term injury is surgery, but this involves risk and a long recovery time.
The number of sessions required will vary, depending on the type of shockwave used and conditions being treated. As a general rule, three to six treatment sessions are advised. As it encourages the body to heat itself, your body will continue the healing process even two to three months after treatment has stopped. Treatment success statistics vary based on the condition but has been between 60%-90%.
According to the FDA: “Shockwave Therapy (ESWT) offers two main advantages over traditional surgical methods: fewer potential complications and a faster return to normal activity.” It is clinically proven, recognised by the top orthopaedic hospitals and used by high-profile professional sports bodies. So, what are shockwaves and how does they work? They are high-energy sound waves, which are transmitted to the affected area to accelerate healing. The treatment increases blood flow, decreases localised pain and stimulates cell regeneration, thus encouraging the body to repair itself. Shockwaves also break down injured tissue and calcifications.
Studies have shown 90% of patients with Achilles Tendonitis (heel pain) experience a full recovery or significant reduction in their pain and injury. The treatment can be used on both long-term chronic conditions and newer injuries, and there is significant evidence to show that Shockwave Therapy can achieve great results even with historical conditions.
They can work on different platforms and can be either focused or radial. The machines operate and affect the body differently. It has NICE guidance for a large number of indications and is used within the NHS.

Nick and Royston's Diary Wonderful Wedding When you have been in business for 30 years, the relationships and friendships you make are incredibly special. Sylvia Davies is one of those ladies whom we have really got to know. She has been Royston`s client for many years and although she has suffered with ill health over the last few years, she has remained a regular character in the salon. A trip to the salon is her medicine. Her son Owen has always brought her, so when he asked Nick and Royston to his wedding to style his mom and future wife Claire, they were delighted. The big day was held at the luxury Vale Resort in South Wales. Set within a 650-acre private estate, it was the perfect backdrop to this beautiful family wedding. After helping dress and style the wedding party, they joined guests in celebrating this happy couple’s special day. It was an amazing day and we wish them both a wonderful life together.
Celebrity Come Dine with Me When Nick and Royston`s friends call for help, they are the first to come forward. So, when Dawn Ward called Royston to help host her dinner party, he was first to put on his pinny! Held at Dawn`s home, Warford Hall, Cheshire, her guests were greeted by Royston, who was dressed in a sexy maid`s outfit and who happily served up the fabulous delights. The evening was full of surprises and all will be revealed on Channel 4`s hit TV show 'Come Dine With Me' in the New Year.

Macdonald
Charity
Julien Macdonald's Charity Fashion Show is a spectacular event in aid of the Royal Osteoporosis Society, whose patron is the Duchess of Cornwall. Held at Banqueting House, London, the evening oozed full-on glamour, with a Champagne reception followed by a sumptuous gala dinner. Katherine Jenkins opened the exquisite catwalk show, where everyone was wowed by Julien's stunning collection. Guests included friends Shirley Bassey, Craig Revel Horwood, Aljaz Skorjanec and his Strictly Come Dancing partner Viscountess Emma Weymouth. It was a magical evening with fabulous friends. Thanks, Wes and Pete.
The Ritz at Christmas Nick and Royston love a traditional Christmas, so an evening at The Ritz London was the perfect Christmas present from friends Joanne and Malcolm Bridgwood. This iconic hotel really knows how to keeps the magic of Christmas alive, with a 25-foot Christmas tree and all the rooms and corridors decked in wreaths and decorations. Everywhere looked divine. The evening started with drinks in the bar and this was followed by a Christmas gala dinner and dance. Dress code was black tie, the food was stupendous, and the atmosphere was fun and festive. The evening was one of opulence and Nick and Royston felt like they had stepped back in time to another era. It really was a night to remember!

DON’T LEAVE YOUR RESULTS TO CHANCE, START BY TAKING ACTION WITH US IN 2020! What happens during the other 98.3% of time when you aren't in the gym? When you’re smashing 3-5 sessions per week in the gym, then surely you can relax the rest of the time? I mean, you have only had 2 days off!
Well get this. A week is 168 hours long, so if you are in the gym for 3-5 hours per week, that equates to just 1.7-2.9% of your week. Even if you were in the gym for TEN hours per week (that's an awful lot by the way), that's still only 5.9% of your week. So what happens to the other 95% of the time? Who is supporting that? In FHIIT, we support our members 100% of the time. We don't leave 95% of their progress to chance. It's that support that helped hundreds of people in 2019 to burn body fat while enjoying a takeaway and a beer or a glass of wine at the weekend. Hospice asks cyclists to get pedalling for vital care
positive feedback from participants, two new routes have been introduced so that beginners, families and more experienced cyclists can get involved. Ride the Reservoir’s 25km route is aimed at new cyclists or families who are looking for their first pedalling challenge. Starting in Bartley Green, riders will be taken through Bournville, Cannon Hill Park and Woodgate Valley Country Park, before heading back to the reservoir.
‘Ride the Reservoir’ – the popular cycling challenge from Birmingham St Mary’s Hospice – has grown this year, with new routes added for beginner cyclists, families and pros. Birmingham St Mary’s is calling on generous riders to take on Ride the Reservoir this March – a cycle sportive that aims to raise muchneeded funds for its care.
The 100km route is for more experienced riders who want to go the distance, taking them through Tutnall, Beoley and Alvechurch then returning via a demanding uphill section past the picturesque Lickey Hills.
Taking place on Sunday 15 March, biking enthusiasts can take on a 25km, 75km or 100km route as they ride through the West Midlands’ most scenic countryside.
All participants are encouraged to fundraise for the charity and help provide care and support for local people who are living with life-limiting illness. Registration starts from £15 and cyclists can sign up here: https://www. birminghamhospice.org.uk/ride -the reservoir-2020

N e w Year’s Reso
Our Time of Year
I n l uti o
s a de
New Year’s resolutions are the perfect opportunity for all those who have failed to start making the changes that they said they would make next week, next month, or perhaps when winter starts. Well, now’s your chance to sit down and prepare a list of important lifestyle changes you want to make, and we’ve decided to give you a bit of help – because since the majority of people fail to stick to their resolution, you’ll need all the help you can get.
1. Get in shape
3. Stop procrastinating
Losing weight is the top resolution for the English, and combined with “exercise more” and “stay fit and healthy” it is something that over a third of the population wishes to achieve. It’s easy enough to start an exercise and diet programme, but the trick is to find a decent one that will give you steady results and will be easy to stick to in the long run.
The biggest barrier that keeps most people from reaching their goals is the desire to relax and do something fun instead of working hard. Once you get used to procrastinating it’s difficult to snap yourself out of it, so you’ll need to put in a lot of work to change this bad habit. There are many useful tips out there to find your way to stop procrastinating. There are also tools that can help you achieve this task.
2. Start eating healthier food, and less food overall
4. Improve your concentration and mental skills
This is usually an extension of the previous resolution. Switching to a healthier diet can be incredibly tricky when we are surrounded by cheap junk food. However, with a good amount of determination and some basic tips you can slowly develop healthier eating habits. Learn to control emotional eating, be aware of reasons for diets to fail.
People have been trying to find ways to improve their focus and cognitive capacities for thousands of years, and most ancient civilisations had some combination of mental exercise and herbal medicine to help them reach this goal. Today we can use anything 73
Our Time of Year from apps to ancient meditation techniques to boost concentration and hone our mental skills. If you go through with this, you will be able to control your mood, learn faster and have an easier time solving problems.
9. Become more polite Good manners have always been an important part of a civilised society. They make it easier to connect with others, avoid offending people and will ensure that others perceive you as a good and trustworthy person. So know the etiquette, be prepared for other manners in other countries, deal with rude people in the right way and learn how to say no.
5. Meet new people When we get stuck in a rut, we usually end up staying at home most of the time, missing out on a lot of interesting opportunities for networking and having fun. Meeting new people can be beneficial to your mental wellbeing and help your career, so don’t be to get out there and make some friends. Overcome your shyness, get some knowledge and go and get to know new and interesting people
10. Reduce stress It is said that stress is one of the biggest killers out there, and that can have a very destructive effect on your relationships as well as your health. It may be an unavoidable side effect of our hectic modern lifestyles, but it can be effectively managed with the help of useful, unconventional and easy to practise tricks.
6. Become more active Some people don’t really have a big weight problem, and they even get some exercise a few times a week, but they just sit around the most of the time at home and at work, which can have a negative effect on their posture and health. In that case, all you need is to find ways of moving around more throughout the day instead of staying hunched over the computer. It’s even more fun if you share your activity with friends and family.
11. Learn to be happier with your life Even those in decent shape, make a good living and have stress under control can still be unhappy. It takes time and patience to learn how to find joy in the little things and not to let problems bring you down.
7. Become more confident and take some chances If you are confident other people notice it, and it is much easier to have your opinions heard, ask people out on dates and get ahead at work. A good dose of self-confidence will help you lead a much happier life overall. Don’t hesitate to get some input on ways to boost your confidence.
8. Earn more money Even billionaires are always looking for ways to earn more money, and we common folk can definitely use an additional source of income to make life a bit more comfortable. Fortunately there are plenty of options available, like having sidejobs, working as a freelancer or using the internet to your advantage. 74
Our Time of Year 12. Get more quality sleep
discover your type of books and find a bit of time for reading here and there.
With big TVs, computers, smartphones, tablets and all sorts of gadgets with glowing lights and beeping alerts, it can be hard to get enough sleep at night. You should be gunning for at least 8 hours of sleep a night, and there are fairly simple ways to achieve this number if you make use of science and everday hacks.
16. Find a significant other We all need someone to hold at night, talk to and share our deepest secrets with, but finding the right person is a matter of trial and error. We need to go out and get to know a bunch of potential partners before we can find the one that we can get along with really well.
17. Have better sex Any healthy relationship requires a good deal of intimacy, and sex can actually help keep us mentally and physically healthy. The idea is to make it a fun and rewarding experience, and this is something that comes with practice and exercise.
18. Become tidier There are a lot of slobs out there who can’t really get their stuff organised, and a cluttered desk or chaotic home will negatively affect your productivity and even your mood, so it helps to clear the clutter, clean your house and lead a tidier life.
13. Give up cigarettes A bad habit that a lot of people don’t know how to kick, smoking will not only endanger your health, but can burn a hole in your wallet as well. Just be prepared to dedicate a lot of will power to giving up cigarettes once and for all.
19. Learn how to dress with style The way you dress can say a lot about you, and wearing the right clothes can make you seem powerful and confident, which in turn can help you land a job, get promoted, and catch the eye of a lovely guy or girl. No matter if you’re male or female, know the dress code and live with style.
14. Watch less TV The average person wastes a lot of time in front of the TV, time that could have been better spent developing skills, learning or keeping your body active. Once you manage to cut down on TV time, you will realise just how long and productive a day can really be.
20. Spend more time with the people that matter
15. Read more
There is just too little time in this life for us to waste it on insincere, duplicitous and toxic people. We should focus on the people who we care about deeply and who care about us, as this is the best way to stay happy.
Books are an excellent way to gain a lot of knowledge on a huge variety of topics, and are also a great exercise for your brain. It’s not that difficult to go through 20 or more books in a year – you only need to make it a habit, 75

Our Jobs
WHY I LOVE MY JOB Customer satisfaction, passion for a job well done and a fantastic team – it’s what gets me up every morning.
Leesa Marsons, of Perfect Paving in Wordsley
I wanted to change this and set about launching a business that people could trust and that I could be proud of. This mindset has made Perfect Paving the pioneers for quality block-paving for the past 25 years. We’ve combined hard work with attracting the best of the best when it comes to staff, which has made us all winners, the customers and us as a company alike.
We install driveways, patios, walls and undertake complete renovations – and I wouldn’t do anything else. We started in an office in Brierley Hill 25 years ago and we’re still going strong. My background is in home improvements, but I very quickly realised that there was a huge gap in the block paving and building industry, and decided to set up my own block paving company – but with a difference!
I believe our unique selling point is quite simply our staff: our exceptional team really does make Perfect Paving what it is today. Our office team comprises Michelle, our office manager, who schedules workloads and assists with distribution; Laura, our customer liaison officer, who does a great job at liaising with our customers and making sure that our teams know the customers’ wishes; Carol, our amazing accounts administrator; and lastly, me … the problem solver.
I was struck by the poor reputation of the sector: I saw cowboys instead of honest tradesmen. They were pocketing cash jobs and had no loyalty towards their customers. They didn’t pay their dues to the VAT man and didn’t invest in their businesses. Their customer guarantees were no better than their workmanship.
We are also lucky to have several teams of amazing block-pavers and builders, all of whom are led by Mark. These are hard-working lads who work in even the most extreme weather conditions to complete a perfect job.
To put it simply: I was tired of people being ripped off!
82
Our Jobs Last year they worked 14-hour shifts into Christmas Eve to make sure a driveway was finished in time for the customer’s Christmas celebrations. They are smashing lads!
for her. Though it was upsetting, we felt privileged to be able to help her achieve that important peace of mind. On a lighter note, I once went to see a customer to help her choose colours for the blocks for her driveway. And then I went back another 24 times so she could decide! Still, she made a lovely cup of tea… and she still sends a Christmas card to Perfect Paving every year.
Every member of staff works closely with our customers to ensure we deliver the outstanding quality of work on which our reputation is built. It says a lot that we have a very low turnaround of staff, 80% of our staff have been with us for more than 12 years. It shows it’s a great place to work and it also means we can rely on a consistently high quality of workmanship.
I’m passionate about this business because i was determined to make a difference in the world, despite being a woman in what was traditionally a man’s industry. I started it at an early age and was determined to make a difference in the world, despite being a woman in what was traditionally a man’s industry.
We have achieved a membership with “Which Trust” and we are rated at 9.8/10 with more than 400 reviews on CheckaTrade – and we’ve also picked up an Employer of the Year Award. To say I’m proud is an under-statement.
As an environmentally conscientious and vegan business owner, I also realise that we are responsible for preserving our planet for the future of our children. I’m proud to say that this company, with its great staff and its customer-focused, eco-friendly ethos has become my life’s work.
We specialise in installing block-paved driveways, Tarmac driveways, patios and walls, but an integral part of our work is renovation – repairing, jet-washing and sealing, bringing old tired driveways back to life. We are also extremely proud to have worked on exciting projects with some amazing organisations, such as the Black Country Living Museum and Stuart Crystal.
It’s not all plain-sailing, being a business owner, but passion for the job is what keeps you focused. In the past we had to battle through a recession and the building trade is taking more knocks now, because of Brexit uncertainty.
It’s a great industry to be in. On a personal level, I love meeting with the general public and helping them with every aspect of their driveway and helping them to create their dream; and from a business point of view, I get to work with the most highly skilled people in the industry. And it still gives me a buzz to see a job through from start to finish.
But we have thrived: when homeowners were reluctant to sell and move due to property prices, they spent money on improving their properties. It meant we were able to invest into our business and the customers were able to add value to their properties.
One of the most moving moments over the past 25 years was when we were contacted by a lovely lady who was terminally ill, but wanted to leave her home in the best possible condition for her family.
Out Of Space launches January 2020 and sees us moving into the realm of extensions, porches and underground extensions – whatever you need to gain valuable extra space in your home. We’re excited by this new arm to the business and we’re looking forward to telling you more about it.
Her only thoughts were about those that she would leave behind. The girls in the office developed a great rapport and a close connection with her and we did our utmost 83

Anita Gatehouse Our Lifestyle’s Financial Expert
ARE YOU WEALTHY?
I came across an interesting article commissioned by the BBC on our collective wealth: https://www.bbc.co.uk/news/uk48759591. The article looks at total private wealth and how it is distributed, both in terms of assets and more importantly, across the population.
We can see property and private pensions dominate, accounting for £9.9tn (78%) of assets between them. Financial assets include cash and investments and physical wealth is possessions, e.g. cars, jewellery etc.
How is it distributed? Excluding physical assets, the average net worth per adult is £105,000. As you would expect, there are huge differences between the most and least wealthy. The bottom 10% of households have less than £3 per adult i.e. majority having a negative net worth. By contrast, to be in the top 10%, you would need a net worth of over £671,200 per adult.
This is particularly interesting to us as we come across a variety of people with different views of their and others’ wealth. The majority of our clients do not view themselves as particularly wealthy, whereas we know that compared to the average person, they definitely are.
What does the nation own?
£12.8 trillion apparently, that’s about £13 million million. It has boomed since the 1980s growing from roughly 3 x GDP (Gross Domestic Product – an estimate of the value of everything our economy produces) then, to 7 x GDP now.
So, the average person we deal with may not feel particularly wealthy, but they are a long way above average, and some are in the top 10%. In general, wealth increases with age as assets are accumulated throughout working life, before being decumulated in retirement. In our early years we have our peak levels of human capital, which we (hopefully) convert to financial capital over our working lives.
This boom has largely been driven by two things: house prices and pension entitlements.
88
Our Finance & Legal We need the most financial capital just as we finish work, which can then be consumed throughout retirement.
have already put into place their action plan. For others it gives them an idea of how, whilst still working, they can adjust their position now, so they can target the lifestyle they would like and when they would like it.
What is your number? With the above in mind - how much would you need to walk away from your work/business at your planned retirement age? What would you need to live off, or give you your desired lifestyle, over the rest of your life? This is your number. This is the wealth you need – excluding assets you use, such as your home – in order to become financially independent of your work.
Having achieved your number, we help manage the decumulation process – how much you can afford to spend/give away and when. This is essential to making the most of life; making the most of your wealth to achieve what is important to you. And doing it tax efficiently. Finally, to come back to a comment from the start: why don’t our clients feel as wealthy as they obviously are on the face of things? Because it is relative to them, not the average.
Do you already have it? This is a crucial area we help most of our clients with. It’s also an important one to get right, as getting it wrong can be very painful. Using our forecasting software we can analyse your current outgoings now and how it is likely to change in the future and then roll the model out, taking in to account inflation, to see how much you will need in your pot to live your desired lifestyle. We include such things as living costs, cars, holidays, leisure activities, whether gifts to family members are feasible and alike to allow you to have a good idea of what it is you want in retirement and if it is achievable. For many of our clients, this confirms they are on the right path and just need to keep doing what they are doing as we
If you have investments of over £150,000 and would like to discuss your investment options, why not give Jo a ring on 01562 745730 to arrange a no obligation 30-minute, free meeting. SILVER DIVORCES AND THE PENSION PREDICAMENT The rates of marriage and divorce in the UK continue to decline, with both at historical lows. But in stark contrast, the number of middle-aged people ending their relationships continues to grow.
continuing to grow, it’s important to note the pension rules have changed to reflect this trend trend, " he says. “Generally, personal wealth increases with age and thanks to increasing life expectancy, a good pension fund has now become one of the most valuable family assets, alongside any property owned outright.
The number of over 50s choosing a so-called ‘silver divorce' is a widely documented modern phenomenon. In 1993, when divorce numbers peaked, just 13.6% of over 50s marriages ended in divorce, but by 2017, the latest year for which we have figures, this jumped to an astonishing 33.2%.
“Therefore, reaching the best financial settlement possible post-divorce is crucial. People also want to ensure that after they die, those they leave behind benefit from their hard earned pension as much as possible. There is a lot to consider and mistakes can be very costly.”
Michael Vale, family lawyer at Ansons Solicitors, explains the hidden pension problems for those divorcing in later life. “Whilst it’s sad to see the silver divorce figures 90

Company historian Sandy Robertson, explained how Webster & Horsfall’s 300year legacy of manufacturing steel wire and rope has been underpinned by a culture of continuous innovation, originating from the company’s founder John Webster.
Company Chairman Charles Horsfall explains: ‘Our perpetual passion to improve our products has kept this business alive. Our willingness to take calculated risk, and to collaborate with experts, is evident throughout our history.
‘This culture has survived the generations, and has ensured the company remains a leader in its field.'
'W&H’s Knowledge Transfer Partnership (KTP) with the University of Birmingham is a perfect example of how the company in its recent history processes through collaboration. This project formed an integral part of W&H’s latest R&D Tax Credit claim.'
The company’s history is defined by extraordinary achievements which have driven significant periods of growth. NISSAN MICRA TEKNA The 999cc 3-cylinder engine has 99bhp, which is more than adequate for the vehicle, and a top speed of 114mph. The CO2 g/km figure is given as 105, while Nissan claims the car can achieve the 0-60 gallop in just under 11 seconds. I drove 200 miles during the vehicle testing, achieving 40.02mpg.
Back in 1983 Nissan launched the Micra, the diminutive city car that hundreds of thousands of people learned to drive in. The new model, the fifth incarnation of the brand, is longer, wider and lower – and definitely far more of a must-have car, writes Bob Hickman. There are barely any similarities between the vehicles that are separated by 36 years, except for the badge.
More than seven million Micras have been sold worldwide and more than three million in Europe, which means there is a lot riding on this particular vehicle, as it aims to compete with the Renault Clio and Ford Fiesta.
The new Micra is available in three engines, two of which are petrol and one diesel. They all share a five-speed manual gearbox and there is an automatic option, which I test drove.
The build quality is high and there is very little noise transmitted back in to the cabin on either motorway or A Class roads. 96
Our Finance Our Motoring & Legal Externally, the vehicle looks attractive with its body coloured, co-ordinated door mirrors and door handles. The rear door locks are concealed to give the vehicle the look and feel of a two-door coupe and the 17” alloy wheels really set the vehicle off. The interior has not been overlooked, either, having chrome door handles on the inside, a leather steering wheel and gear lever.
the front door and A pillars, and two driver head rest speakers. A 7” infotainment screen provides easy navigation of the Tom Tom traffic system and I particularly liked the fact that in addition to the rear parking sensors, which I can’t do without, Nissan has equipped the vehicle with a rearview camera. There is also a USB port to connect your phone, iPad or if you wish it to co-ordinate with Apple Car Play or an Android system.
The Micra adequately accommodated four adults, although five would be a push, and the boot space at 300 litres is more than adequate.
There can be little doubt that Nissan has taken the Micra upmarket with the amount of kit that is on board but, of course, it is not the the bargain mini vehicle it once was. The Micra I tested would have been £19,405, but the addition of the 17" alloy wheels at £550 and the rather nice metallic paint at £575, would take it to £20,530, a price we would have winced at for a small family car just a few short years ago.
Nissan has not skimped on the internal equipment for the vehicle. The safety systems fitted as standard include antilock brakes, hill start assist, speed limiter, automatic headlights sensors and tyre pressure monitors. The driver’s seat has a height and adjustment feature and the steering wheel is also adjustable for height and reach. Audio and navigation equipment is extensive, with a BOSE audio pack with four speakers in
