LUXURIOUS BATHROOM AND BOUTIQUE ENSUITE FROM ROMAN BATHROOMS Mrs While had first come across Roman Bathrooms whilst visiting a friend some 20 years ago. Three bathrooms later, Mrs While did not question who to call when she decided to update her family bathroom and shower room. Like many homeowners, Mrs While was looking to upgrade the rooms to provide a more luxurious bathing experience that was light, spacious and easy to maintain. Having seen, and later fallen in love with, marble effect tiles in the window of the showroom, Mrs While wanted to use white, bright tiles and a Laura Ashley vanity table to create a crisp, clean look in the main bathroom. We added a sleek overhead shower unit, with a clear shower screen and a modern spacious bath. An alcove mirror with spotlights maximised space in the room and accentuated the vanity table. The result is a light filled, spacious family bathroom with plenty of storage. In the en-suite a corner WC makes the best use of space. A wall hung vanity unit with mirror above makes the space look brighter and larger and we also found room for a modern quadrant shower. A neutral colour scheme and floor to wall tiling completes the boutique look of the room. Mrs While said, “Caroline is a great designer, there is so much more space in the room. I also love the mirror, the positioning of the vanity table opposite the window catches natural light, and there are spotlights above it for the evening – everything is perfect.” 4

Furnished for quality and give honest advice. Most of our customers recommend us to friends and families, which signifies that we are doing something right."

There are few items that turn a house into a home more than a comfortable settee or an easy chair. Of course, they need to be well made. The last thing any of us wants when we settle down to watch TV or read a book is for cushions to sag or legs to buckle.

If it’s upholstered, anything can be made, from sofas and chairs, headboards to coffee tables. Need something bespoke? Most items can be adapted to suit different room shapes and sizes. Stain-resistant chemical treatments are also available.

If you’re looking for furniture that will keep you cosy for years, head to Park Lane Furnishings, in Halesowen.

Visitors to the showroom in Park Lane can choose from a wide range of styles, colours and fabrics, from chenille to velvet, plains to plaid. Designer fabrics are also available. The team’s services are also popular with people who wish to have items re-covered. This can be done in a week and is ideal for those who want a fresh look but don’t want to change their favourite chair.

Since its launch in 2011, the company, which is proud to be a British manufacturer, has gained a reputation for high quality service and workmanship and consistent prices all year round. Director Andy Cutler explained: “We don’t have seasonal sales events because we’re a manufacturer and I’m a firm believer of you get what you pay for, so we strive to supply the best quality at reasonable prices all year round. We simply make better quality furniture built to last, with no pressurising sales staff in our showroom. We listen to our customers’ needs

Spring of 2019 By Jane de Weijer : Make Space Interiors ltd Contact: www.makespaceinteriors.co.uk be coming onto the High Street and into our homes over the next 12 months. Times change and it is essential to know what’s coming around the corner. An example of this, as I have mentioned before, is the revival of the Art Deco style. Go into any Interior design shop today and you will see the colours, glamour, metallics and geometrics, essential elements of the era, on accessories, fabrics and furniture.

As an independent Interior Designer, I work closely with my clients to deliver a scheme that is tailored to their style and requirements creating a room or rooms that they love going into and that they feel ‘at home’ in. I like to approach a design project holistically with all the elements from furnishings to paint colours to accessories combining to create the design scheme. An example of a scheme: An Entrance hall combining traditional elements with contemporary finishes. This is a title for the illustration.

BEING INSTAGRAM READY Social media, is now an important element in my initial meeting with clients. Whereas a decade ago clients would have produced a collection of wallpaper samples or a traditional collection of colour choices, maybe produce

restrained and simple. All the shades are neutral and on the same spectrum.

Clients have thousands of images at their disposal. With Instagram images of exciting rooms and Pinterest online mood boards the job of the Interior Designer is to create a unique space based on all these elements, adapting the ideas to the space and proportions of their own room.

2. Analyse the textures. For example, in this image, the client has been attracted by space and simplicity but has also been inspired by the textured wood wall finish which adds warmth. When creating your room look for the clues in the image for example, neutrals, textures, simplicity, and adapt to your space.

My first complimentary visit to my client's home is always the most important. All the clues, colour choices or even accessories such as candles and picture frames reflect tastes and choices alongside the aspirations for their room design.

3. Look at the space that is created. In this instance, the serenity and simplicity in both images can be interpreted by ensuring that your room is open with a few well chosen elements so that the eye is drawn to the focal point.

DESIGNING FROM INSTAGRAM

4. Function: I always create a scaled drawing.

For example. A client may come with these images ready to create a home office. How do you analyse the different elements in the images and combine them to create a unique scheme?

By planning your room you can identify your focal wall, ensure that furniture and storage are arranged so as to allow for plenty of circulation space. If you would like that extra bit of advice my initial complimentary visit will include looking at your ideas and images and helping to create a room that reflects your Instagram choices., contact me at jane@makespaceinteriors. co.uk.

1. Look for the clues. Even if you are not going for a particular theme there will always be a common thread that pulls a scheme together. In this case, the colour palette is 9

You can utilise the natural qualities in this kitchen (3) with recycled timber unit fronts and polished concrete work surfaces.

GO ARTISANAL

I love the drama of these 3D concrete wall tiles, adding texture to large internal walls.

The movement towards using artisanal pieces in your home is a strong trend for 2019. The item created by a local artist can add character and helps to shift focus from the tech world to the more organic.

GO COPPER Rose gold was one of 2018’s most popular finishes. For 2019 we expect to see more copper, in accessories, on furniture, it is this year's metal. With it’s red and orange tones and overall earthy hue, copper is warm and adds the perfect contrast to those stone finishes and velvet upholsteries.

GO NATURAL 2019 and the move is towards fresh, natural materials, think stone, copper, concrete, and granite. These organic elements will add texture and earthiness to your space. Combined with metallics to ensure that urban 2019 edge and you will have the perfect ontrend interior space.

If you are looking for a 70’s wallpaper vibe go for large geometries. This paper from a range by Harlequin wall coverings, www. harlequin.co.uk is a perfect choice.

GO 70’S Finally, we are still going 70’s. If you really want to be bold and leave the Swedish cool calm and collected interior behind with the winter and the long nights, get down to your paint retailers and mix up a couple of match pots in these retro tones. Combine teal blues with burnt russets, add some of the 2019 metals and textures if you are feeling brave go looking for a large scale geometric paper to keep it retro.

Good Luck with your decorating projects. Enjoy the rooms that you create, your home is unique because it's yours and that makes it special. 14

CARPET & UPHOLSTERY CLEANING Hello, I’m Terry and I have been running Devilishly Good for over 25 years. I first came into the industry whilst living abroad, working as an electrician. I decided to pursue my interest in cleaning on my return to the Uk. During this time, I have built up an excellent customer base of which I am extremely proud of. I pride myself on providing a professional service that I carry out in all areas of my expertise.

My customer base ranges from household cleans to commercial in all the services I provide. I am a fully insured operator for your peace of mind with certification. All my machinery is of the latest Fast dry system, with a drying time in around 1hour. All my products are soap free, which limits the “sticky residue” which attracts re-soiling. I offer scotch guarding on all carpet and upholstery, with a 50% discount given after a clean.

As well as the satisfaction of the job I enjoy meeting new customers and the rapport I hold with my existing clients.

Hard flooring is a popular choice nowadays and I offer a full high heat/Strip clean and reseal if required.

I regularly attend various courses and keep myself up to date with all the latest techniques and procedures. I am not part of a franchise and my prices reflect this.

For any further information/quotes and advise please feel free to contact me on the numbers below.

OVER 100 YEARS EXPERIENCE

Our Travel

Touch Down On the Space Coast by Rebecca Underwood, Travel Journalist Saturn V Centre, I was absolutely mesmerised by the exhibits, including the powerful Saturn V Rocket, which has transported every astronaut who has stepped onto the moon’s surface. I then headed for the Firing Room Theatre to relive the launch of the first crewed NASA mission, which orbited the moon in 1968. The theatre audience faces the actual consoles used during the Apollo launches and leading up to the countdown the excitement is palpable. The viewer experiences the incredible noise as the rocket lifts off from the launch pad and as it blasted into space I wondered how those brave astronauts could withstand the fear of the then unknown.

Florida’s Space Coast, which includes Cape Canaveral, Cocoa Beach, Melbourne, Indialantic, Palm Bay, Viera and Titusville, offers 72 miles of pristine, glorious beaches, the world’s largest 24- hour surf shop, and the robust waves ensure that this is America’s East Coast surfing capital. The Space Coast is the ideal destination for a family holiday and for those of us who are fascinated by the stars; it’s the gateway to the Kennedy Space Centre Complex. Built in 1967 and home to NASA’s 30-year Space Shuttle Programme, which is pivotal to the Hubble Space Telescope and the International Space Station, the Kennedy Space Centre attracts more than 1.5 million visitors every year. Up with the larks and keen as mustard, I set off to explore the centre and to focus on the future of travel – ‘Space, the final frontier!’

Hopping back on the bus to Mission Zone: Shuttle: A Ship, Like No Other, I viewed the incredible Space Shuttle Atlantis®, which transferred astronauts from Earth to space and back for thirty years and covered a distance of 126 million miles. Scorched and battered, it is an amazing sight, a vehicle that launches like a rocket and then lands like a glider. The Shuttle Launch Experience® was my next venture and I strapped myself to a seat to be subjected to the force of a simulated take off. The module rotates to a vertical position

The Kennedy Space Centre’s narrated bus tours transport passengers to NASA’s restricted areas, passing by working facilities including the Vehicle Assembly Building and Launch Complex 39. Arriving at Mission Zone: Race to the Moon, located at the Apollo/ 30

Our Travel enforcement, and visitors are welcome to take the opportunity to harness their skills. As an absolute novice and extremely nervous, the Range Safety Officer assured me that I was not the first and swiftly presented me with my Ruger SR22 -22LR semi auto pistol, 50 rounds of ‘live’ ammo, and a target poster depicting an unsuspecting assailant! After a short lesson on safety, loading the magazine and aiming the weapon I was instructed to ‘fire!’ and to my amazement I have been deemed ‘a natural’ as my first volley of shots hit the assailant’s neck, head and heart.

and each ‘passenger’ experiences the force of acceleration and vibration as the shuttle launches and soars into orbit, and it was simply unforgettable. Another local attraction of note, which is only a ten minute car ride away from the Kennedy Space Centre, is the American Police Hall of Fame and Museum, located on Horizon Drive in Titusville. Founded in 1960, this building is the nation’s first national law enforcement museum dedicated to officers who have lost their lives in the line of duty. Exhibits include an impressive collection of police cars, including one, which featured in the film Blade Runner, a rather disturbing replica of a prison cell, a guillotine, which displays a sign warning the viewer not to touch the blade or put their neck under it! There is also a rope, which was once used for hanging and a wide range of decommissioned fire arms and tools used by law enforcement officers. Additional exhibits include a collection of photographs and artefacts related to notorious criminals such as Bonnie Parker and Clyde Barrow, Al Capone, Legs Diamond and Baby Face Nelson. Feeling rather unsettled, I headed for the shooting range! The on-site shooting centre is a regional training resource for law

Feeling relieved, and in need of a breather, I hailed a cab and headed for the Cocoa Beach Pier, and on arrival I was fortunate to arrive in time to join the crowd of spectators waiting for the Space X Falcon 9 ‘live’ rocket launch, which successfully lifted off launch pad 39a at the nearby Kennedy Space Centre. The crowd reacted with spontaneous whoops of joy and rounds of applause and I was absolutely ecstatic. To celebrate, I made my way to Grills Seafood Deck and Tiki Bar, located on Glen Cheek Drive, and sampled the Cuban sandwich, served on authentic Cuban bread, with marinated pork, ham, Swiss cheese, pickles and a dash of mayonnaise

A little light-headed, I headed back to Cape Canaveral and the comfort of the Cape Winds on Ridgewood Avenue, adjacent to the gorgeous beach. The resort’s facilities include an outside heated pool, sauna and hot tub, and for those with energy to spare there are flood-lit tennis and basketball courts. My spacious apartment featured two bedrooms and two bathrooms, a utility room with a washer and dryer, an open plan lounge, kitchen and dining area with a wrap around balcony furnished with high chairs and a sun lounger facing the ocean; the perfect spot for an afternoon snooze.

The fun didn’t end there as those who dined in one of the restaurants or booked into a hospitality box, enjoyed the evenings afterracing entertainment ‘Cool Britannia’, a show dedicated to the swinging sixties. Guests did ‘The Twist’ and danced the night away to songs such as ‘Ain’t No Mountain High Enough’ and ‘Sherry’, followed by a resident DJ playing into the early hours.

HOW TO CHOOSE A HAT! The winter is slowly retreating, spring is on the way and most of us are filling our calendars with special events such as weddings or a day at the races.

are the Mother of the Bride, for example, then you are one of the most important people at the wedding so you will need to be in a great outfit including a hat or headwear of some sort. Therefore, it's important to choose the right style, not only for the occasion, but to suit both your outfit and face shape. There are lots of options these days such as hiring a hat or getting one custom made. The choices are endless so here are a few guidelines to help you on your way.

These joyous occasions present opportunities throughout the summer to get dressed up in our finery, topped and tailed with a glorious hat and shoes and finished off with an adorable little clutch. What's not to love? Shoppers heaven, right? However, for some the experience of finding a hat to fit the bill that not only suits the occasion and complements the chosen outfit and is comfortable to wear can be a nightmare. If you

If the Face Fits It goes without saying that different hats suit 50

Our Weddings different people. Colour, shape, style and even the type of decoration all work in different ways to highlight your best features and bring out the design aspects of your dress or outfit.

will eventually need to be removed for either dancing or dining where as a hatinator can be on all day! A i.e smaller hat, or fascinator will look better with a 'hair up' style as this accentuates the neck line and femininity and sets off the head piece perfectly.

An oval-shaped face can get away with anything. We all know that person that seems to be able to put anything on their head and it will look fabulous. If wearing a large brimmed hat though, try tilting it backwards slightly so that it frames the face rather than cut across it as this can leave an oval face looking rather long. If you are wearing a button or percher style again choose gathered widow veiling, tumbling flowers or feathers to soften the edges to blend rather than the hat 'floating' on your head.

Take your chosen headwear to your hairdresser and experiment with style to find one that suits the whole ensemble. If you are wearing a brimmed hat, then the rule of thumb is that the brim of your hat should rest a thumb's width above your eyebrow. Remember to pack a comb or brush in your handbag. If you have had your hat on for some hours, especially in the heat, you may need a quick bit of backcombing to bring back some body.

Square or round faces suit hats with a larger brim that can be worn slanted for maximum effect. If you have a round face keep the height of the hat shallow to avoid overshadowing, you face. You can get height, should you want it, from feather or quill adornments. A squarer face shape can generally carry more embellishment. If you wear glasses, you are best to wear an upturned brim that will not interfere with your frames.

Hat Hair! There is a subtle art to hat wearing. It's important to give thought to your hairstyle when choosing your headpiece, the hair should be considered part of the outfit and complement the hat. Large hats that enclose your head fully and sit on your forehead are not as popular and the 'hatinator' (a new concept lying somewhere between a fascinator and a hat) which can generally be worn on a headband, comb or an elastic. This little number is a godsend for those with curly or frizzy hair as it doesn't interfere with your hair too much. Added to which it's perfect for weddings as large hats 51

Our Weddings and comfortable in your chosen headwear; you don't want to be fiddling and fidgeting all day. Find a hat that fits.

Tried and Tested The secret to finding the hat for you is to try lots on.

A custom-made hat will be made to fit your head shape exactly and should be a breeze to wear. If you have found a hat but feels that it needs titivating or adjusting, most milliners should be happy to add combs or elastics to make the fitting perfect for you. They will also be happy to add embellishments such as feathers or flowers which will help you tie in the hat to your chosen outfit.

Visit larger stores with dedicated millinery departments where you can try style, colour and textures. Hats always look much bigger off than on, so try all types so you can get a good feel of what might suit you and what you would feel comfortable in. Take a friend whose opinion you trust and make a day of it. Do try and avoid shopping for a hat last minute as this becomes stressful and you may end up panic buying. Give yourself plenty of time before the event to find exactly what you want. If you can't find what you want, then consider hiring one or take the opportunity to have something bespoke made. A custommade headpiece will enable you to have exactly what you want in the right shape colour and style to suit your face and outfit.

We simply don't get to wear hats enough these days so enjoy the experience and don't be afraid to make a statement with your headwear. Whatever your choice, wear it with confidence and make sure the hat doesn't wear you; you wear the hat!

Head First If on the other hand you have fallen in love with a hat you've found, then plan your outfit around it. In some ways this is easier. If the hat is a statement piece, then keep your dress and accessories simple to allow it to take centre stage. Pick out one feature such as colour or material and choose a simple dress to match. If the dress is all one colour, then chose a second colour from the hat for your accessories. It doesn't have to be an exact match a complementing tone will work just as well and bring it all in together. You can always add extras to your outfit to help the colours tie in. A pashmina or a delicate pair of crocheted gloves in a tonal hue can add accents of colour and will look stunning against a simple, well fitted dress. The more flamboyant the hat the simpler the dress needs to be.

The Collagen Journey Collagen is a buzzword when it comes to skin ageing for both women and men and there’s certainly a lot to take note of before working out the correct way to increase and stimulate the collagen production in your own skin. The end goal is to slow down and prevent premature ageing so that we can look younger for longer.

Your forties may be fabulous however it’s at this age that your metabolism slows down further meaning you may start to notice some loss of elasticity and muscle tone. Menopausal ladies will also have reduced estrogen levels leading to a drop in hydration. Internal influences as we age affect the ability to metabolize sugars too and these sugar molecules bond to protein fibers of collagen and elastin. This is called glycated collagen and coupled with a depreciation of hyaluronic acid due to estrogen levels reducing possibly from your mid 30s onwards, can further lead to dehydration which may appear as puckering on the skin in a crisscross network of wrinkles most visible around eye and chin area.

In your twenties, there are generally no evident symptoms of collagen loss as this is the age your collagen levels are at their very best. Vitamin C is essential for collagen synthesis and maintenance, as well as a primary requirement for skin healing and preventative ageing process. However, those who use sunbeds or spend lots of time in the sun will have increased free radicals leading to a reduction in Vitamin C and possible signs of dry or dehydrated skin too. Starting to loose collagen in these early years will speed up the reduction of other elements like elastin in the skin and premature ageing too.

By your fifties, you will notice a natural drop in muscle tone along with fat and the decline of bone density. It’s within this age bracket most women go through the menopause and see a significant decline in estrogen levels which signifies a subsequent further drop in skin hydration; this will mean that the sugars in the tissue fluid become overly concentrated once again.

When it comes to your thirties you can still expect to see hydrated, plump skin with an even skin tone, however, cell turnover begins to slow down along with collagen production too as this is when the ageing process starts to kicks in for both men and women. You may start to show greater susceptibility to a change in skin health and density, which is also due to a natural reduction of metabolism. This can result in dehydration of the skin and an inability to maintain sufficient collagen levels and you will see small signs of collagen loss such as reduced suppleness, firmness, skin sensitivity and fine lines.

To read the FULL article visit our website www.tejandco.co.uk/blog/ for lifestyle habits to actively avoid and reduce also our recommended 4 step skincare routine. Nick and Royston's Diary CHARITY PANTOMINE As such frequent visitors to Manchester, it is now a second home to Nick & Royston and the people there have adopted them as one of their own. They were thrilled to be asked by one of Manchester`s leading Charities Mustard Tree to be in their annual Pantomime, Dick Whittington at The Dancehouse Theatre. Given the job of opening the show as the Narrator dressed as strict School Mistresses, they dazzled the audience, with their humour and cheeky innuendos! Back on stage again to open Act two, they closed the show as the dazzling bridesmaids to lead character Alice Fitzwarren. The performance went down a storm to the 500 in the audience and over £10,000 was raised for a worthy cause. The party didn’t end there. They dashed off to join close friend Claire Caudwell and her guests at her mansion in Leek to celebrate her special day, with a magnificent party.

ANNUAL CHRISTMAS PARTY After a year off from their Annual Christmas Party, due to a team trip to Marbs, everyone was delighted to be back at The Park House, Shifnal for a celebration of 2018 at Royston Blythe. This year`s theme was The Greatest Showman and guests were greeted by the infamous Globe Girls. The evening was a spectacle of the most amazing circus acts, including Sword Swallowers, Macabre and Burlesque entertainers to thrill and delight. As always, it was a night to remember!

Fast Track Your Fertility By Emma Cannon

Every fertility journey is different but when it comes to planning for pregnancy, getting your (and your partner’s) mind and body as healthy as possible is beneficial all round.

as well as good quality fats and oils in the diet - try olive, hemp, or pumpkin oil. It is recommended that we should eat between 5-8 portions of fruit and veg per day, with the emphasis on vegetables as fruits are often high in sugar. It is also worth considering taking probiotics and prebiotics as these may help improve gut health.

Fertility and integrated women’s health expert Emma Cannon shares her top tips for helping you to prepare your body for pregnancy.

1. Nourish your body When thinking about trying to conceive, eating well, as in eating nutritionally optimal foods, may improve your fertility. And then there is the added bonus, that when a woman does get pregnant, both she and her baby’s health and development may be optimised with healthy eating habits. Eat a rainbow diet, in other words, a wide variety of foods! Your plate should be mainly plant-based with a small amount of meat per week if you eat meat. Grains which have been soaked well before use, as well as seeds and nuts which are great for your health in small quantities 68

Our Health

2. Make time for looking after yourself

Adopting a healthy lifestyle is key to getting your body ready, but for conception to occur you have to put yourself in the right situation at the right time! Each woman’s cycle length is unique, so it is important to understand how your own body works as there is only a small window each month where conception is even possible. The myLotus Fertility Monitor is a new device which is the only product available that quantitively monitors a woman’s personal Luteinising Hormone levels which indicate impending ovulation (aka the best time to have sex!). By being able to identify this, a woman can maximise her chances of natural conception and gain a whole lot on information about her cycle. For more information visit, www.mylotus.com

Life’s busy and stress can play havoc with our ability to rest and relax. Too much stress can also affect our hormone levels which subsequently impact the menstrual cycle, affecting fertility. The same holds true for men as well. Stress has been linked to poor sperm quality. Emotional health is just as important as physical health so take some time out every single day to improve your wellbeing. Find something which works for you – e.g. relaxing bath, baking, reading a book or get you partner to give you a massage. Meditation is also great for increasing stress resilience so why not take some time to practise this as it is a great skill to have, not only when you are in the pre-conception stage but throughout pregnancy, labour and beyond!

4. Shape up Getting fit before conception is very important as it will help your body cope better with the demands of pregnancy. Exercise is key to maintaining a healthy weight which is vital as obesity has been linked to increased infertility.

3. Get cycle savvy!

69

As a guide, your preconception weight should be within 15lbs (7kg) of the ideal range for your height. If you’re not an avid exerciser, try introducing gentle exercise, such as brisk walking, swimming or yoga. Consistency is key so find a routine you enjoy and make sure you dedicate 30 minutes three times a week. Physical exercise also plays a role in mental wellbeing, relieving stress and releasing endorphins known as ‘happy hormones’.

bodily imbalances. One of the oldest being acupuncture, which works by rebalancing your energy flow and primes the body, has been linked to improved fertility. For women wanting to conceive, acupuncture can be used to regulate hormone function, increasing blood flow to the ovaries and uterus and help to relax muscles which can improve the chance of an embryo implanting. Mention it to your partner too, as acupuncture may also improve sperm motility and optimise male fertility hormone levels.

However be careful not to over exercise as extreme exercise can have a detrimental impact on the body; low body fat can stop periods all together and I have seen an increase in hypothalamic amenorrhea (e.g. menstruation stops due to problems with the hypothalamus) from over exercise. Moderation is key!

5. Support with Complementary Therapies Complementary therapies have been used for thousands of years to help heal and correct 70

Why I Love My Job Kevin Little - K - Klean Window Cleaning Services redundancy. My application was successful and at the end of the year I suddenly found myself unemployed.

The year was 2005 and I had been in my current job for 5 years. It was a highly responsible job being in charge of a 40 strong sales team. The perks associated with the job were all there and appreciated – company car, company pension, bonuses etc. When sales were good, I was the ‘best thing since sliced bread’ but when targets were missed, I was taken to task. The pressure was intense and my work/life balance was non-existent with me working long hours and hardly ever being home at night. I started to question if this was what I really wanted from my working life. So, midway through 2005 the company announced that it needed to become more streamlined and with great trepidation, I decided to apply for voluntary

Having always worked from leaving school, I decided to take some ‘time out’ and set off with my step-son Wayne, on the holiday of a lifetime for four months. Wayne had just finished a college course so it turned out to be not only a holiday for him but a great learning experience. Back packing was a new experience for me – we met lots of students along the way but no one else in their late forties like myself! We visited places I had only dreamed of including Singapore, the Philippines, New Zealand, Australia, The 76

Our Jobs Cook Islands, Fiji and parts of America. Whilst relaxing and taking in the sights, I started to think about what I wanted from my working life. After a lot of thought, I knew I did not want to work for another company so self employment was the way forward but what to do was the next question. I looked at various options and finally came to the conclusion that only two were for me – specialising in cleaning stained glass windows or window cleaning. Following more research, cleaning stain glass windows was discarded as it would involve too much travelling so window cleaning was the way forward. I arrived back home and immediately enrolled on a business course run by Business Link which was a government funded organisation. The course was invaluable in preparing me for setting up my own business. Following completion, I applied for a ‘start up’ grant which was £1,500. I was successful in gaining this. I used the grant and my redundancy money to purchase a van, equipment, insurance cover and publicity materials and K-Klean Window Cleaning Services was born. A lot of foot slogging and phone calls ensued and eventually my first client came on board. As word spread and recommendations were given, my books became fuller and I realised that I was enjoying the work and having the freedom associated with being my own boss.

Kingswinford, Halesowen and surrounding areas. The job to many people would be boring but every day is different with meeting people, visiting different locations, undertaking small tasks to help my elderly clients (I'm now an expert at putting bins out!) and making sure that the more vulnerable clients are safe and well. The company is going from strength to strength and this year I am expanding the business by taking on additional vehicles and staff. I am planning to cut down my own hours to allow me to pursue other interests including setting up a local business association. The move to self- employment was a giant step for me having always had a monthly salary appearing in my bank account but I have never looked back. My work/life balance improved immensely and all the hard work that I have put in has resulted in a now long-established business that is flourishing and expanding.

The business was established in 2007. The following year I moved house on a self-cert mortgage which was a few months before the 2008 financial banking crisis took hold of the country plunging us into recession. Looking at this and where I am now I have had some luck along the way as many small businesses folded during this time. K-Klean Window Cleaning Services uses a water fed pole system for cleaning and I clean both residential and commercial premises. I also clean gutters, fascia's, solar panels and conservatories. We are based in Stourbridge but cover a wide area including Hagley, Kinver,

MOTHERING SUNDAY AN ANCIENT CELEBRATION The origin of Mother’s Day go back to the ancient Greek and Romans.

Historically, churchgoers worshipped on Sundays at their nearest parish, known as their ‘daughter’ church. Centuries ago it was deemed important for people to return to their home or ‘mother’ church once a year.

The Greeks held an annual spring festival and used the occasion to honour Rhea, wife of Cronus and the mother of many deities of Greek mythology.

The return to the ‘mother’ church became an occasion for family reunions. Its a popular belief that this return is what led to the tradition of Mothering Sunday.

Ancient Romans, too, celebrated a spring festival, called Hilaria dedicated to Cybele, a mother goddess. The celebration lasted for three days and included parades and games.

The custom of celebrating Mothering Sunday died out almost completely by the 19th century. However, was celebrated again after World War II, when American servicemen brought the custom and commercial enterprises used it as an occasion for sales.

Mothering Sunday is the fourth Sunday of Lent and this year falls on 31st March. Its often referred to as Mothers’ Day, but that is in fact, a completely different American festival celebrated at a different time of year.

Today this special day, commercial or not, is a chance to reflect and give thanks to our mothers and is a particularly poignant time to remember loved ones no longer with us.

Traditionally, it was a day when employees, who were staying away from home, such as domestic servants, were given a day off and encouraged to visit their mother and family. 80

EASTER A SPRING HOLIDAY WITH RELIGIOUS ORIGINS In Spanish, Easter is known as Pascua; in French, Paques. These words are derived from the Greek and Latin Pascha or Pasch, for Passover, which is the celebration to commemorate the liberation of Jews from the slavery of the Egyptians in ancient times.

The exact origins of day are unknown. Pagan folklore claims the word Easter is derived Eastre (or Eostre), the Anglo Saxon goddess of spring. A festival called Eastre was held during the spring Equinox to honour her. Eastre’s earth symbol was a hare, also known as symbol of fertility and perhaps the origins of the Easter bunny.

As with most religious and historic festivals Easter has now become a commercial venture.

The spring Equinox is a time where the earth renews itself after the winter. The egg is widely used as a symbol of new life and re-birth and so became a symbol of Easter.

Did you know, over 90 million chocolate Easter bunnies are made each year.? This year Easter Sunday falls on Sunday 21st April. Most of us will enjoy a 4 day holiday from Good Friday 19th April to Easter bank holiday Monday 22nd April - and most of us will enjoy the time with family and friends eating far too much chocolate!

In the Christian faith Easter has come to mean the celebration of the resurrection of Christ from the tomb, three days after his crucifixion. It is the oldest and most significant holiday in the church year. Easter Sunday comes after Lent, a 40 day period of fasting. Other accounts trace Easter to the Latin term hebdomada alba, or white week. In reference to the white clothing worn by people who were baptized during that time. Through a translation error, the term later appeared as esostarum in Old High German, which eventually became Easter in English.

DUDLEY BUILDING SOCIETY AWARDS FUNDING TO COMMUNITY GROUPS ACROSS THE BLACK COUNTRY Dudley Building Society has granted funding to organisations in and around the Black Country. The Society received a staggering amount of applications for the fourth year of its ‘Community Support Fund’, where a total of £4000 was on offer to charities and projects across the community. All of the applications were taken through a thorough selection process and seven organisations were selected to receive funding. The donations were presented by employees at the Society’s Dudley branch on 8th February 2019.

volunteers, the charity provides an extensive list of services including bespoke one to one support, transportation to appointments and medical clinics. Kate Kelly, Fundraising Development Officer at the charity said ‘We are extremely grateful for the support from Dudley Building Society. It is great to see a local organisation supporting a local charity and we thank them for their generous donation.’ Sycamore Adventure was also selected to receive £1,600. Located in Dudley, the popular multiaward winning adventure playground was visited by 30,000 people last year. With 22% of visits from disabled children, the charity will use the funding to provide specialised therapeutic sensory bean bags for those with complex needs. For some children, having access to these bean bags is the only time they can leave their wheelchairs. ‘We are really excited about receiving the donation and delighted with the prospect of working with the Society in the future’ commented Moira Shaw, Chair at Sycamore Adventure.

Chief Executive, Jeremy Wood comments ‘In our 160th year as a mutual organisation, we are still committed to developing strong, ongoing links in the community. The Community Support Fund allows us to continue adding value to the communities in which we serve.’ One of the successful applicants White House Cancer Support, a charity based just around the corner from the Dudley branch, will use the funding to continue providing a range of services for Cancer patients. The charity is one of two organisations who received the higher amount of £1600. With over 70 dedicated 86

These donations symbolise the Society’s record breaking 160th year, in which successful Interim figures were reported and strong member feedback has been consistently received. The Society has recently been shortlisted for several awards including ‘Best Building Society’ at The Mortgage Awards 2019 and ‘Customer Service Champion’ at the British Bank Awards 2019.

How to navigate market volatility

Anita Gatehouse Our Lifestyle’s Financial Expert

mistakes.

Global stock markets have experienced volatility during the last year with political issues all over the world having an effect. It is important to remember that market corrections and even bear markets (falling prices over time) are not unusual, most investors will have to endure such events during their lifetime.

* Pay attention to costs, investment expenses eat into your returns. * See the big picture - focus on the progress of your investments over the longer term not the daily ups and downs and stick with your investment objectives.

It is important though, to put volatility into historical context as trying to avoid the turmoil can lead to costly decisions. In most cases, trying to time what is happening in the market simply results in selling low and buying high, ironically, the market’s best and worst trading days are often close together.

Having a good financial plan and a trusted adviser in place helps you to navigate and stay on course when the waters are choppy! The information in this article does not constitute investment advice; you must not rely on the content when making investment decisions without taking advice. Past performance is not a reliable indicator of future results. The value investments and the income from them, may fall or rise and investors may get back less than they invested.

What should investors do? I believe you should focus on what you can control; * Stay diversified – don’t keep all your investment eggs in the same type of assets, think cash, bonds and equities and spread risk by investing internationally.

If you have investments of over £150,000 and would like to discuss your investment options why not give Jo a ring on 01562 745730 to arrange a no obligation 30 minute free meeting.

* Tune out the noise - don’t keep checking your investments, making decisions based on a recent market event often results in

Make a Will this March and support a Birmingham Hospice Birmingham St Mary’s, said: “Your will is such an important document and yet, so many people still don’t have one. Having a will has many benefits but ultimately, it gives you peace of mind that your loved ones will be provided for in the future.”

Generous solicitors and will writers from across the West Midlands are supporting a local hospice’s ‘Make a Will Month’ this March – offering people a cheaper way to sort their will whilst showing their support for a charity. From Monday 4 to Friday 29 March, a number of solicitors and will writers will be waiving their usual fees and asking for a charitable donation to be made to Birmingham St Mary’s Hospice instead.

“Taking part in Make a Will month is a less expensive way of getting your affairs in order, whilst supporting a fantastic cause at the same time. We have lots of solicitors and will writers taking part this year who can make sorting your will as simple as possible – you can arrange a home visit, complete it online, or even visit the solicitor at their office.”

Suggested donations are £100 for a single will, which typically cost £185, or £125 for a joint will, which costs £225 on average. All funds raised will go towards the Hospice, which supports people to live well with life-limiting illness.

To find out more about Birmingham St Mary’s ‘Make a Will Month’, visit: www. birminghamhospice.org.uk/make-a-will or call 0121 752 8779.

VAUXHALL ASTRA ULTIMATE 1.6I The Vauxhall Astra has been around since 1979 and its doubtful if anyone hasn’t seen, heard, or been part of this particular vehicle.

The Ultimate trim package included a Parking pack, this gives the driver advanced parking assistance, a rear view camera and alerts for blind spots. The perforated leather adds to the luxury, both front seats are heated and to my amazement the two outer rear seats are also heated. The amount of extras which are now considered to be standard in the Ultimate extend to auto wipers and lights, automatic cruise control with an Intelligent Speed adapter. Hill start assist, see me home lights, the list goes on and on.

Police Forces, driving schools, virtually everybody has an association with an Astra. It has evolved over the years, as you would expect, if you stand still in motoring industry terms is to commit suicide and with the new Ultimate Astra, Vauxhall has upped the game dramatically, writes Bob Hickman. The test car was a wonderful Rioja Red, a deep red wine colour, and with its 18 inch bi-colour alloys, it suggested that this was anything other than a run of the mill Astra.

The vehicle not only looks superb but it drives and handles as well as it looks. The 1.6-litre turbo charged engine produces 200ps sufficient to give a top speed of 146mph and 96

Our Motoring a 0-60 time in marginally over 6.5 seconds. The economics of such a vehicle with this amount of performance were never going to be generous,Vauxhall suggest 45.6mpg on the combined,I achieved about 38mpg, and the CO emissions are 142g/km.

With all the specification and Vauxhall wanting to promote an up market feel to this particular vehicle it is to be expected that a high price would be asked, the on road price is ÂŁ27,235. The sting in the tail however is when you add in certain extra features, my test car was equipped with the Driver Assistance Pack, keyless entry system, sunroof and wonderful paint. Adding an additional ÂŁ2.500 to the on the road price.

The 6-speed manual gearbox, fitted to the vehicle, seemed to appreciate whatever terrain or circumstances I was driving in and was perfectly happy to tootle in and around town at the legal limit in 6th gear which was a bonus.

This premium car price shows Vauxhall are being very brave to enter in to this particular very competitive German dominated market place.

The level of standard features is outstanding and you really do need to pop to the local Vauxhall garage to check out the spec for yourself.
