One of the most asked questions as an interior designer is, what flooring should I choose? To help get you started I have outlined the flooring trends you can expect to see in 2023.
choosing flooring.
Top Trends 2023 1. Sustainable Carpets
When choosing flooring, whether it is for a hallway, kitchen, living room, bathroom, or bedroom, choose the overall style you want to create with your flooring, from contemporary and modern design to warm and traditional.
In recent client projects I have been sourcing more natural, sustainable, hand crafted carpets for their homes. Sustainable carpet material crafted from renewable materials such as wool, sisal and sea grass. These natural products are less harmful to the environment.
The type of flooring you decide on will have that instant impact to your room interior ‘look and feel’ and is a design element you will keep for a number of years so choosing the right flooring can be tricky.
Wool carpet is a fantastic product for our homes. It is a natural renewable material as each sheep grows a new fleece every year. Wool is the coat of a sheep or goat and spring is the time of year when all fleece is shorn off the animals and the protein fibre is carded and spun into yarns for textile products.
Also things to consider when updating your flooring, your every day lifestyle as flooring needs to compliment your everyday living. Any children or pets require a hardwearing flooring type that needs to be stain resistant, easy to clean, or less likely to scratch easily. Also think about the sunlight factor as too much sun can damage a wood floor and the noise factor.
Wool carpet is a great insulator with many benefits from soft, easy to clean, a natural dirt-repellent and hardwearing in high traffic areas.
Also budget is key as flooring types and designs can range in price per square meter and this will be a big portion of the budget in terms of the quantities required. So consider the purchase and installation costs when

of fashion and it's warm, earthy, rustic, raw colour is a traditional lived-in design. To add a contemporary twist, lay the terracotta tile in a herringbone pattern.'
‘Checkerboard’ Checkerboard is making a come back, as recently suggested in House 'Beautiful Magazine's' hottest flooring trends for 2023.
‘Stone’ Porcelain stone tiles in natural tones are coming back in – classic, chalky, softer tones will reflect the landscape around us. Stone finishes are set to make a statement and remain a top choice in 2023.
Whilst traditionally monochrome, we are also seeing modern alternatives using a variety of playful colour schemes. They are a great way to add pattern and visual interest to a room and they look especially good in hallways, bathrooms, and kitchens.
‘Geometric’
I recently worked with a client to transform a utility boot room space and a checkerboard floor tiles was used for the flooring. This flooring style added a timeless, heritage feel that complimented the rest of the farmhouse interiors.
Don’t be afraid to inject vibrant shades and contemporary geometric flooring patterns into your home or commercial space. Decorative geometric tiles draw the eye in and create a statement feature. Team with neutral paint shades and let the flooring command the attention.
‘Terracotta’ Timeless terracotta tiles never really goes out

3. Wooden Flooring
floors in small size herringbone. For open plan large spaces, choose wide planks or oversize herringbone or a chevron design.
Wooden flooring will remain a top choice for 2023. I have showcased my latest designer inspiration for wooden flooring colours and patterns.
‘Artefact’ Cube flooring If you want to express your individual style in your flooring choice, cube flooring is a great option. I have selected this ‘artefact cube’ style wood-flooring pattern as trending styles for 2023/24.
‘Natural colour’ Natural, earthy, raw colours and textures all create the perfect ambience to relax and unwind. There's no better way to complement a relaxing space than with natural wood flooring.
The cube floor will look stunning in your entrance hallway or commercial property foyer.
Timeless wooden style patterns such as parquet and herringbone influenced designs add depth and character. Throughout 2023, we expect wooden aesthetics in herringbone to remain a popular choice. Herringbone can really open up a space as it’s flowing pattern so can make the illusion of the room to be bigger.
‘Noir’ Dark wood Striking dark wooden flooring instantly creates mystery and drama. Reflecting on the ‘film noir’ genre of escapism. Dark wooden flooring colour is a powerful flooring trend that is bold and beautiful and looks fantastic paired with a polished brass feature strip.
Remember to focus on getting your proportions right. For smaller spaces, lighter

Bromsgrove Preparatory Gardening RHS Level 4 award Bromsgrove Preparatory School Gardening Club were delighted to receive the RHS Level 4 Gardening award earlier this term. In order to achieve the Level 4 award, pupils learnt how to protect the plants against the weather, pests, and diseases and use tools professionally.
Sam Dakin, the teacher in charge of the activity, says “This is an opportunity for the children to grow and connect with nature. Gardening Club allows the children to work towards a goal together and have a sense of achievement, teaching them how to care for our planet.”
Each week, the pupils independently take turns to plant, maintain and harvest the produce. Making soup and having a sale of the things they’ve harvested to raise funds to buy seeds, plants, and equipment for the garden. Before Christmas, they held a sale, and they made leek and potato soup with their own produce. Currently there are 12 members and all of them worked extremely hard to receive this award.
Not only is the Gardening Club an activity for pupils to enjoy as a co-curricular activity, it is also fully supportive of the School’s Sustainability pledge. As they compost their waste from break time fruit, used coffee beans and tea bags. As well as made reusable plant labels out of yogurt and margarine tubs. The activity is led by the pupil’s choice of plants that are grown, and the activities that need to be done each week. 24
Lawns do wonders for our wellbeing. That’s why we’ve devised three programmes of year-round treatments to keep your grass a cut above. From controlling weeds to bringing out the green, we’ll help you to look after the lawn that looks after you.

Keeping children with allergies safe Allergy Penpals offers a range of friendly accessories that children with allergies can wear and carry to help keep them safe while out and about. Allergy Penpals was created by Michelle Barnett, an allergy mum from Hagley. Michelle has designed kid-friendly and fun allergy alerts that children can wear at parties and events as well as put them on their backpacks, lunchboxes and waterbottles. Her aim is to increase awareness of children with food allergies and to help keep children safe. Allergy Penpals has developed into a community for like minded parents and has used her platform to host allergy friendly events. "Allergy PenPals launched in March 2022 after finding out that my eldest son had an egg, tree nut and peanut allergy. When he was diagnosed, I was completely naive about what it would mean and how it would change our life. He was first diagnosed with an egg allergy 26
Our Health Mum-of-two Michelle has been selling the allergy alert items on her Etsy page and she also has a website allergypenpals.co.uk.
but it wasn't until he had an anaphylaxis reaction to nuts at about 14 months old that it really hit me how serious food allergies can be. I didn't know any other child with allergies, and it felt very isolating, especially during the covid pandemic. Bertie was due to start nursery and I had to put my trust in somebody else to look after him. It was very unnerving and I'm sure all parents feel the same when they leave their child for the first time so adding the worry of food allergies was stressful, to say the least. I was getting his backpack ready and I started looking for something to put on his bag to make the nursery workers and other people more aware of his allergies. I didn't have much luck so I decided to create my own allergy alerts. This started with stickers, but I now have keyrings, badges, and a luggage tag. I wanted to make them fun and kid-friendly so that children were proud and happy to wear them at parties or to put on their bags. I hope to help keep children safe and put parents' minds at rest a little when they have to leave them."

Recommendation is always a great place to start. If a friend or family member has had great service then you can too! Or search online for your local audiologist, read the reviews and see what others have to say
· Continuity of Care As a small family business you are most likely to see the same audiologist – Jo or Sophie when you visit us. If its wax removal or hearing aid servicing, Wyll, Yvette and Julia are on hand to help. In larger organisations, you may see one of many audiologists or even a locum who will have to learn about your hearing history each time you visit.
Private Independent Audiologists An independent hearing company, like our Hear in Hagley, Hear in Wombourne and Hear in Rubery clinics, offer a level of personal service that can’t often be provided by chain-based companies or the NHS. Our dedicated clinics are designed with you and your ears in mind!
· No need to rush We like you to feel relaxed as we discuss your listening needs and will work with you to ensure you make the right decision. This can be done with a tea or coffee in hand, we even provide the biscuits!
What can I expect? · Professional team We pride ourselves on our professionalism and expertise. As fully qualified audiology professionals you are in safe hands. Our clinics at Hagley, Wombourne and Rubery are dedicated to hearing care, that’s just what we do.
Given the choice, where would you prefer to be seen when discussing your ears and hearing?
Hagley/RUBERY Clinic 01562 884400 hagley@lifestylehearingsolutions.co.uk
· Personal service You are important to us and we genuinely care about you and your ears. More often than not we can remember which hearing aids you are wearing if you pop in for filters or batteries. We are happy to chat about your health, the family and even the latest holiday you’ve been on!

Mental Ill Health Seasonal Blues Hilary Sims - Life Balance
As a counsellor, I see a pattern in the problems clients present to me, throughout the year, that could almost be looked at as being seasonal.
workforce, even more will see counselling as a social norm. That being said, the importance of counselling should not ever be underestimated. While it’s becoming increasingly socially acceptable to seek personal help that shouldn’t lessen the impact of counselling or make conditions that counselling or therapy treat, any less important.
It’s not quite as black and white as people suffering from depression in the winter months, anxiety in the spring, couples’ issues in the summer and teenager problems in the autumn, but there does appear to be trends associated with seasons.
The differing array of symptoms and conditions require different methods of counselling. These methods used are more down to the individual needs of the patient rather than the condition they present with. Some patients might respond better to CBT (Cognitive Behavioural Therapy) others, SFT (Solution Focused Therapy) or Humanistic Counselling.
For example, the new school year in September and the following few months, particularly for 14 to 18 year olds, seems to bring a larger concentration of stress and anxiety related conditions. Christmas particularly and just after, family and relationship concerns. April, and we see a trend forming around depression illnesses (this also coincides with the highest numbers in a month, for suicide)*

Seeing a counsellor doesn't hold the stigma it used to, thankfully. When I was growing up, if someone saw a counsellor, it was a sign of weakness, particularly if you were a man and while there is still a stigma attached to seeking mental health help, it’s much less that it was.

Thankfully, we have seen a change in that way of thinking as generations come and go, meaning that for some, in fact, probably for most, counselling is now seen as a form of selfdevelopment, and in many social settings, it's encouraged. As our next generation hits the 30

How Hypnotherapy Could Help You Having suffered with anxiety in the past, working in high pressure sales roles, whilst managing the demands of two young children. I understand how stress can impact every aspect of our lives, leading to weight gain, panic attacks, insomnia and negative self-talk.
Louise Squires HPD, DSFH, MNCH (Reg.) AfSFH (Reg.), MHS (Reg.)
I work with clients with anxiety, depression, weight management, phobias, sleep problems, confidence issues, imposter syndrome and many other areas. I help my clients to identify and work with their inner skills and resources, to help them to realise their potential and ability to make positive changes.
As a solution focused hypnotherapist, I help people to make significant, positive changes in their lives in a short period of time. I help my clients focus on what they want to achieve rather than on their problems. Sometimes clients feel a certain way, but they don’t know the reason why, or they don’t want to talk about why they feel the way they do.
I offer a free initial consultation if you would like to find out more about how hypnotherapy could help you, please get in touch. Appointments are available at my clinic in Bromsgrove and I also offer online appointments, if preferred.

All shades of pink are ultra feminine, this season Magenta has popped up on the colour palette, which I love, add metallic accessories for an easy fix. Dear Readers Many of you will have heard about Tettenhall College. It’s that lovely school tucked away at the end of the high street in Tettenhall. A school whose walls create a beautiful boundary for our amazing facilities and our super pupils. Those historic walls contain a school where the majority of the 500 pupils are British and local to this area – more than 80%. Yet it is also home to a wonderfully cosmopolitan boarding community of students from more than 24 countries, with 100 full time boarders thriving, growing and bringing so much to our school. Perhaps you have friends whose children attend TC. You might have visited us for our wonderful annual fireworks event (more than 3,000 of you did last year!). Perhaps your children have played sport on our pitches, or perhaps you drive past regularly and spot our lovely twinkling lights on a dark evening. TC is a school that's thriving. Under its Headmaster Mr Chris McAllister, pupil numbers have never been healthier. The school is going from strength to strength in it's 160th year, with a leadership team that is driven, ambitious and experienced. It’s a team that's bringing the school together to make it greater than the sum of its parts. There’s a core set of values followed on a daily basis at TC: Ambition, Character, Community, Creativity and Opportunity. Simple statements perhaps. Yet values are only meaningful when the children understand their meaning and how they can personally bring them to life in everything they do. Children at TC are known. They are individuals whose personal skills and talents form their individual learning plan. We aspire for academic achievement and excellence for every single pupil. That’s a given. Just take a look at our university destinations. They are excellent. What is often lost in the educational landscape of today, is the importance of knowing a child, to ensure that they are fulfilled in their learning, secure in their relationships and confident in themselves. TC nurtures this and when you meet the pupils, you'll see it. When you meet our staff, you'll understand it. The story of TC could fill many books and would take many words to tell. Yet we would love for as many children as possible, to experience and benefit from all that we deliver. As a registered charity we continue in our commitment to bringing scholarship and bursary opportunities to deserving children. We also ensure that every family who commits to being part of the ‘TC family’ is known and valued. The world of today is a challenging and complicated one. TC is committed to ensuring that every pupil who experiences its education will be well placed to tackle all that they will face with compassion, gratitude, intelligence, and as a citizen of our global world. We can't wait to meet you and welcome you to TC. 52

Stourbridge Rugby Club As the sun starts to set on this rugby season we have looked back over the past eight months at the memories and special moments that have stayed in the minds of the squad……
“Seeing “Chlo-Jo” return from long term injury & how her natural ability makes a difference to the scoreboard & the confidence of those playing alongside her.”
“Lichfield at home, early in season saw us with only just enough players to field a team & ended with only about 10 players on pitch but kept going until final whistle. True Panther pride was displayed in the face of adversity.”
“Kirsty being sick on the pitch & then after the game being fined for this disgusting display by doing a forfeit, only to be sick again trying to down her pint in one as the punishment!” “Best bits of season that I’ve seen of standing up to be counted……
“My favourite memory of the season is watching the away game against DK, and how everyone played their absolute hearts out. It made me feel so proud to be part of the team even though I wasn't playing (Injured) and the effort was just outstanding from every single person.”
Kirsty at 8 in the drubbing we had comes to mind, she just kept powering on! My favourite was Ruth just stepping up to the plate instinctively, when the game was turning to shit.”
“Seeing players gain and realise new abilities, and also establishing themselves as part of our rugby family.”
“Finishing mid table in the National Challenge 2 Midlands West in our very first season in the league, especially when against all but one team that have played league rugby for a number of years”
“When I ran full pitch during the Telford home game and assisted Ruth score her first try.” “Chloe Jones going from not sure I’m going to play & wanting to be on the bench on her first game back from injury. Then within 10 minutes from kick off wanting to get on the pitch and 10 seconds later turning into an avenging angel.”
“Seeing the hard work in training translate into matchplay, specifically, the first time using 'laces' (A set move) and scoring from it.” “After 6 or 7 weeks of training a rugby team for the first time, achieving the first win as a coach against Tamworth, with Izzie Taylor kicking 5 out of 6 kicks. Proud moment for me and the team after some hard work in training appearing on the pitch!”
“Watching Izzie T go from a total novice to a key member of the squad in a couple of months, Izzie threw herself into training, match days & the rugby family.” 56
Our Leisure “My favourite memory has to be my first match! I came off the pitch at the end, worried I hadn’t played well enough and the last thing I wanted to do was disappoint my team, who had already become my family. Yet, as I was walking off the pitch, pretty much every single person I had played with congratulated me and thanked me for being a part of the match, putting in some tackles and backing up my team members if needed. I went home that day on cloud nine, knowing that playing rugby is something that will be part of my life for a long, long time.”

Salzburg: for a little night music. by Rebecca Underwood, Travel Journalist

Salzburg, Austria’s fourth largest city evokes memories of childhood fairy tales and it truly has music at its heart. Located on the banks of the Salzach River at the northern border of the Alps, this city is the birthplace of Johannes Chrysostomus Wolfgangus Theophilus Mozart and it was the setting for Rogers and Hammerstein’s 1965 unforgettable musical, The Sound of Music.
dating back to 1498 and highlights include the Golden Chamber; richly furnished, with walls that were once covered in leather tapestries embellished with gold and the glittering Golden Hall with its gold studded ceiling supported by a sturdy beam, which is 17 metres long. The Golden Hall is the venue for more than 300 concerts every year when the most talented musicians from all over the world celebrate the works of Strauss, Haydn, Schubert, Vivaldi, and of course Mozart. Salzburg’s most famous son was born in 1756 and at the tender age of five he was proficient on both the violin and keyboard and began to write music. He composed his first symphony at the age of eight and records show that he performed in Venice at the age of fifteen. To learn more, visit Mozart’s Geburtshaus, located on Getreidegasse.
The Untersberg Mountain, which is only ten miles from the city centre, featured in the opening and closing scenes of the film, which was awarded the Oscar for best picture, in 1966. Soaring 6,473 feet into the blue Alpine sky, the Untersberg attracts visitors and locals keen to show off their skiing skills during the winter months and it’s a popular spot for hiking, climbing and paragliding in the warmer months when many a tourist can be seen running at full speed with arms outstretched impersonating the Von Trapp’s with abandon. Another of Salzburg’s most popular attractions is the imposing Hohensalzburg Castle, which is perched high on a hill overlooking the city and dates back to the 11th century.
The townhouse where he was born and spent his first 17 years is a museum which exhibits a fine collection of instruments including a small violin that he played in his childhood and the clavichord on which he composed The Magic Flute. A selection of family portraits is displayed on the walls and there are personal letters and early editions of his music. Visitors are welcome to listen to his music, using the headphones provided, and standing in his home serenaded by his genius is a truly spellbinding experience.
I hopped on the glass Festungsbahn cable car and was richly rewarded with spectacular panoramic views of the city and valley on one side and the mountain on the other. The medieval fortress features state apartments, 58
Our Travel Whilst my mood was high, I wandered around Alstadt, which is Salzburg’s old town, recognised as a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1997. Visitors flock to admire the exceptional examples of baroque architecture and to appreciate the towering domes and spires. I took a leisurely stroll around Herbert von Karajan Square, named in honour of the Austrian conductor of the Berlin Philharmonic, and I paused to admire the magnificent Horse Pond, designed and built in 1693 by Johann Bernard Fischer von Erlach, the Austrian architect and sculptor.
dressed with crisp fine linens, and the food is outstanding. I sampled the delicious truffle ravioli with parsley and ‘Goji’ berries and of course accompanied by my preferred tipple. I raised my glass high and made a toast to Saltzburg, it truly is a city with music at its heart.

Audi RS 3 Sportback quattro fast and fun model to be cocooned in. This is not a hot hatch as we know it, but a very hot saloon, because it has 4 doors.
Whilst currently the marketplace is now primarily for SUV’s Audi have taken an A3 and created the ubiquitous sheep in wolf clothing. Let’s get this straight from the outset, an A3 is a brilliant car, I owned one, I loved it, but Audi have now produced the RS3 version of the A3 and it is an outstanding car, writes Bob Hickman.
The RS3 reaches 60mph in 3.8 seconds and the top speed is limited to 155mph. Phenomenal performance but it is not just the linear straight-line performance, the mechanical nature of the particular vehicle makes a very entertaining vehicle especially when you take it out on to your favourite twisty roads or if you fancy why not take the family saloon and do a track day, it is absolutely superb and you have to experience it to believe how it handles and performs.
If you look at the front, you will note the huge grille and the vents along the side, the RS3 is both wider and lower than a normal A3 and has an aggressive nature, especially with the huge 19” wheels, bring in to the equation the Kyalimi Green colour scheme and you could park it in a 10,000-car park and you would still find it such was its brilliance. There is no mistaking that the RS3 is a serious piece of kit.
It will test your driving skills to the limit and unless you are a professional driver most of us mere mortals will only ever scratch the surface of the RS3 handling and performance criteria.
It not only looks the part, it really is the part, it has a 2.5 litre 5-cylinder, turbo charged petrol engine, producing a staggering 400bhp, it is a

Our Motoring 0-60 all ticked the relevant boxes. The vehicle will not be cheap to run, the emissions are extremely high at 205 g/km and only expect to get in the region of 30 mpg on a combined cycle and if you utilise the performance, you can expect that to be down to the mid-20’s.
job in making a vehicle that isn’t too firm and handles with a degree of comfort, because after all if you need to carry the family, you want to be comfortable. Those of you who are familiar with Audi’s quality know they have wonderfully designed and equipped interiors, they look beautiful, the buttons and controls work superbly with a resounding click or clunk when necessary. The 12.3” instrumentation display, along side the 10” infotainment touchscreen always produced the information you need with an ease of use without having to delve into a 500page handbook. The infotainment system itself works extremely well, if you want to use your Apple Play or Android Auto it will allow you to connect these particular features.
The RS3 Sportback quattro 400PS Launch Edition S tronic, was priced at £57,770, add in the beautiful wonderful exterior paint at £575, a whopping £1400 first Road Fund Licence, and the on the road cost of the vehicle was an eye watering £60,460. For this amount of money, you have a vehicle that will perform like you cannot believe and yet will carry your family or 4 adults in absolute comfort. Audi suggests servicing should be at every 19,000 miles or 2 years, whichever comes first, and provide the vehicle with a 3-years or 60,000 miles warranty.
The driving dynamics of the vehicle were exceptional, the handling, and the speed, the

A boost for pension savers

annual allowance was also increased from £40,000 to £60,000. This is the amount that you can pay into your pension pot in any tax year without having to pay tax – the point where the valuable tax reliefs are no longer available.
The recent abolishment of the lifetime allowance, often described as a stealth tax is welcome news to many pension savers. The lifetime allowance was the total amount of pension benefits you could build up in your lifetime before you suffered a tax charge. The excess above the lifetime allowance was taxed at a hefty 55% where benefits were taken as a lump sum or 25% as pension income.
The knock-on effect of the increased annual allowance was that the Tapered Annual Allowance, which reduces the allowance for high earners was also increased. High earners can now have an adjusted income of £260,000 before their allowance begins to reduce – it means they can use pensions even more efficiently to offset their highest rate of tax.
It was introduced in 2006 at a level of £1.5 million and initially rose to a level of £1.8 million, which at the time meant it affected only the larger of pension pots. However, over time it has been gradually squeezed and in recent years has been frozen at just over £1 million, meaning more and more savers were being caught by the tax.
It's been good news all round and has opened up opportunities for those who had previously been forced to limit or even turn their back on pension planning.
The removal of the lifetime allowance means pension savers will no longer need to be concerned about the increasing size of their future pot and instead, they will be encouraged to save more; taking advantage of the valuable pension tax reliefs available.
