Over 35,000 feet of choice Comfortably nestled behind ASDA on New road in Kidderminster, Carters Furniture Store will breeze into this summer proudly celebrating its 43rd anniversary. Opened in 1975, by John and June Carter on Comberton Hill, it quickly became apparent that the appetite for quality affordable furniture in and around the area greatly surpassed their initial expectations and it wasn’t long before the decision was made to search for much larger premises.

with many smaller local manufacturers, who are able to supply bespoke and made to measure furniture, the choice available is truly staggering and definitely one of the reasons the business has continued to be a success over such a long period of time. Another reason would be the ethos instilled in the staff by John and June, whereby they are encouraged to promote a comfortable and friendly shopping experience where you won’t be hassled, pushed or forced into a sale. Instead, you will find yourself able to peruse the shop at your convenience with knowledgeable and experienced sales assistants on hand to aid your decisions and alleviate your dilemmas.

The business was relocated to its current canal side location in 1982, but due to overwhelming demand this still wasn’t enough space to cope and in 1988 the beds were separated from the furniture and displayed in a brand new showroom just around the corner on New Road.

Where to next? Never standing still, Carters have launched a brand new Ecommerce website. Showcasing as much of their furniture as possible whilst making it all available to purchase 24/7 from the discomfort of your current sofa!

The remainder of the company specialising in Sofas and Suites , Dining sets , Bedroom Furniture and giftware continued to grow in size throughout the 90’s and into the new millennium, resulting in renovations to the building and effectively doubling the warehouse capacity , extending the showroom and stock areas as well as updating the interior of the store, to maintain a grasp on the latest fashions and trends.

The new age of the internet and social media have seen the Carters brand splashed far and wide, resulting in the customer base expanding further and further from its origin in Kidderminster , spreading throughout the UK. Recently customers have come from as far afield as Wales, Devon and Liverpool to buy from the store.

It will come as no surprise to hear that after the continual extensions and expansions the combined coverage of showroom floor between the two stores is now well over 35,000 sq Feet !! With plans to make it even bigger in the future!

In the past 43 years a lot has changed, competitors have come and gone, recessions have waxed and waned, styles have been forgotten and returned, but the core belief at Carters has always remained the same. We will offer you a huge choice of great quality furniture and with our Price Promise , WE WILL NOT BE BEATEN ON ANY LIKE FOR LIKE QUOTE !! Come in and see for yourself why the counties largest independent furniture store is also one of the longest established family run businesses in the area.

Where does the success come from? Big name brands have always been associated with Carters, from GPLAN to SHERBOURNE, STRESSLESS to ALSTONS, ERCOL to SUTCLIFFE, dealing with some of the best suppliers of furniture in the world will always mean Carters is at the forefront of quality and design, but that isn’t all, as we maintain close relationships 7

On the board

Finally summer is here. Our Summer 2018 sees an exciting explosion of new fabric collections, colours and textures on the market.

1: Farrow and Ball’s, www.farrowandball.co.uk have a striking dark paint that will provide that dramatic backdrop to those deep vivid colours. If you do decide to go dark remember to contrast, not with pure white, but a soft shade that will compliment and soften the dark walls.

Dive into the summer with those deep colours From strong and vivid velvets through to florals and chintz, yes Chintz its back, via the tropicana prints that are still there on cushions and the shelves of your local high street design shop. I have been looking through some of these new trends and have put together a collection of favourites that cover all trends and tastes.

2: I have added with a gorgeous vivd pink velvet. On the sofa, www.sofasandstuff.com is the latest Harlequin fabric, Amazilia velvet, a perfect contrast to that deep and sultry room.

Jewel drops 2018 sees unusual colour combinations and textures. Combine silks with heavily textured wools, introduce delicate embroidery and tiny flashes of jewel colours. Intricacy and detail are your buzzwords, add velvet cushions in peacock blue and emerald green add tropical foliage, inspiration comes from the early to mid-twentieth century. Look for silks and shine. TIP: Don’t be afraid to go dark and broody.

Lets start with the drama Black is back! Adding depth and weight to the dramatic hues and rich tones. Paint the walls with Down pipe, Farrow and ball, and contrast with colour and texture.

On the board Here I have introduced Farrow and Ball colour, Vardo, a rich turquoise, if you dare, it will add a stunning feature wall and backdrop to the foliage and jewel shades in your room. From left to right 1: John Lewis: Palm 2: Vardo paint shade by Farrow and Ball www.farrow and ball.co.uk 3: John Lewis: Silk Dupion 4: Dashwood Studios: Birds.

Embellish! We are leaving minimalism in its purest form and have done for some time, embellish fabrics, blinds, curtains, cushions with tassels, fringes and pompoms. Explore online and in local shops and add texture and opulence to your room. Drapery & Tassels Graf Paris - Declercq Passementiers www. declercqpassementiers.fr. I suggest that these go on your pin interest board for inspiration and pure opulence. The rich colours and decadence with detail and colour in these photographs showcase this look perfectly, adding this detail to any interior will add the drama and detail that the 2018 room needs. 11

Lets go soft Of course there is something for everyone. Try bringing the outdoors in for Summer 2018. Green, can be controversial in a colour scheme, people love it or hate it much like Marmite. If you love it then try a sage green colour palette. Team up with botanical prints, foliage and shades of pink on classic upholstery. Bring a hint of Lavender into your home if you want to be on-trend this year. Pantone's colour for 2018. Finally, Chintz is back. The cabbage rose chintz cushions bringing back memories of those heady days of an English country summer, high tea and scones and heady summer days and evenings compliment this elegant palette of soft spring colours beautifully. Match orals and plains, mix and match, combine colours and keep the shades pastel to mid strength, not too vivid in the traditional country scheme.

1: Lavender silk from a selection by John Lewis,www.johnlewis.com 2: A chintz from a selection at Sanderson fabrics, Clementine. 3: go for nature, birds here from a fabric at Osbourne and Little, osbourneandlittle.co.uk 4: Gorgeous sage green linen fabric to compliment this summer theme. 5: John Lewis : Fern 13

OVER 100 YEARS EXPERIENCE

Our Travel

Lauderdale by the Sea – it’s a little piece of Floridian heaven……… by Rebecca Underwood, Travel Journalist boat show, glorious beaches, and meandering canals, it is such a tranquil peace of heaven that it seems as though it is of a bygone era, untouched by commercialism and a spot that has retained that old Floridian charm.

Picture a small tranquil Floridian town, bathed in sunshine, and one which simply oozes with that laid back lifestyle found in the Caribbean. Imagine gently swaying palm trees, a town square furnished with pastel coloured wooden benches, comfortable seats and parasols; the place where locals and visitors gather to ‘chill’ and chat, or a leisurely stroll along uncongested, white sandy beaches where sea turtles emerge from the sparkling waters of the Atlantic Ocean to lay their eggs from March to October……

Lauderdale-by-the-Sea, known as LBTS, is recognised as Florida’s most popular spot for beach diving. Divers are attracted to the reefs, one of which is 100 yards off the beach and the other is only a ten-minute swim away. Another very popular attraction for divers is the wreck of the SS Copenhagen, a 19th-century British steamship, which now lies less than a mile offshore and only 25 feet from the surface. In 1994 Florida recognised the SS Copenhagen as an underwater archaeological preserve and in 2001 it was placed on the national register of historic sites.

Welcome to Lauderdale-by-the-Sea, which covers an area of only 1.56 square miles and recorded a population of 6,056 in the 2010 census. Although the town is only 12 miles away from the hustle and bustle of Fort Lauderdale, famous for its annual international

37

For those who prefer to keep their head above the water, consider a spot of snorkelling above the reef and view the abundance of colourful tropical fish, and perhaps experience a close encounter with a passing turtle. Or, visit Fort Lauderdale’s 180 acre Hugh Taylor Birch State Park on East Sunrise Boulevard, rent a canoe, kayak or ‘peddle’ boat, and paddle slowly along the mile long freshwater lagoon and spot the local wildlife. Ardent bird watchers will be entranced by the variety of species, including migratory birds, known to visit the area.

back to the tranquillity of Lauderdale by the Sea’s Ocean Boulevard and enjoyed a first class luncheon at the Sea Watch on the Ocean. I sampled the succulent char-grilled swordfish, served with Roma tomato, balsamic vinegar and basil, and accompanied by a chilled glass of the 2015 Chamisal Stainless Chardonnay with those tropical notes of mango, satsuma and kiwi, it was perfect. Today, it’s exceedingly rare to find a Floridian beach resort where there are no huge ‘corporate style’ hotels taking over the skyline. We were very fortunate to stay at the Windjammer Resort and Beach Club, located on palm tree lined El Mar Drive, adjacent to Lauderdale-by-the-Sea’s pristine, white sandy beach and only a short stroll away from the town centre. The Windjammer Resort and Beach Club is a highly regarded member of Superior Small Lodgings of Florida; an elite association of small independent hotels with a maximum of 50 rooms, and each member adheres to strict codes of practice and annual inspections. The level of comfort and service at this small, charming property is exemplary, and the selection of contemporary, selfcontained, fully furnished and air conditioned studios and apartments with one or two bedrooms are ideal for self-catering holiday rentals.

Another popular attraction is Bonnet House, Museum and Gardens, located on Fort Lauderdale’s North Birch Road. Named after the bonnet lily, the house was designed in 1920 by Frederic Clay Bartlett, an American artist from Chicago who was given the land when he married Helen, the daughter of Hugh Taylor Birch. In 1983 the property was given to the Florida Trust for Historic Preservation and the house and its contents have been well preserved and in 2002 the property was declared a historic landmark. Visitors are transported back to a time of gracious Floridian living and it is truly a spectacular property surrounded by lush, verdant gardens, and is one of the last examples of South Florida’s native barrier island habitats. We wandered around the fabulous grounds, which feature five distinct ecosystems including the mangrove wetlands, a maritime forest and the Atlantic Ocean beach.

Features include full kitchen facilities with every appliance provided, separate lounge and dining areas, ultra comfortable beds and a spacious bathroom with a shower. There are two heated swimming pools with sun

Following that fervent exploration we headed 38

the delicious ‘monster fish n’ chips’, and served with a frosted glass of Kendall Jackson Chardonnay, it was just the ticket. For a more formal affair the Piccolo Ristorante, also on Commercial Boulevard, serves first class Italian dishes. I ordered the ‘Chef’s Amatriciana’ – fusili pasta with balsamic caramelised onions, pancetta and crushed red pepper, which was served with aplomb. And accompanied by a bottle of Brunello di Montalcino, with its silky tannins and notes of cassis and cherry, it was unforgettable.

Amenities include an excellent daily housekeeping service, complimentary super fast and secure in-room Wi-Fi, an on-site laundry, a complimentary car parking space and complimentary bicycles with helmets and locks for guests keen to keep active. The resort also offers direct access onto the gorgeous beach and complimentary parasols and beach chairs are provided for guests. For those seeking a tranquil place to relax all day, somewhere to lounge around in swimwear and flip flops, where the only distractions are the pelicans flying overhead and the sound of the waves retreating gently from the shore, look no further.

And for those of us with a sweet tooth, a leisurely wander along Commercial Boulevard, which is crammed with quirky shops full of trinkets, beachwear and souvenirs, will pay dividends. Head for Kilwin’s, which specialises in ice creams, sticky toffee apples and homemade fudges, which can be viewed being paddled on site. The creamy sea-salt caramel fudge or delicious peanut butter fudge is sure to satisfy the most discerning taste buds.

The Lauderdale-by-the-Sea community provides visitors with complimentary public transportation; ideal for local trips. The Pelican Hopper service runs every day and the route includes the Village Shopping Centre, which features Publix, an enormous supermarket with an excellent delicatessen and bakery.

Or, wander along to Jan’s Homemade Candies, located on North Ocean Drive and select some of the mouth-watering chocolates on display, which include chocolate butter cream, coconut, lemon, maple, orange, raspberry and vanilla. This is of course the ideal gift box for loved ones at home but will those chocolates remain undisturbed? Ours didn’t!

For a casual dining experience take a short stroll down to Commercial Boulevard, and head for Mulligan’s Beach House Bar and Grill. Whist dining ‘al fresco’ and taking part in the popular sport of ‘people watching’, I sampled

CHICKEN AND SWEET POTATO PIZZA THIS RECIPE SERVES 4

8 mushrooms pan fried in butter 2 sprigs of fresh oregano 1 bulb of garlic 100g of grated mild cheddar 8 slices of salami Rapeseed oil

INGREDIENTS PIZZA DOUGH: 500g Bread Flour (plus extra for dusting) half tsp of Maldon sea slat flakes 1 tsp quick acting yeast 375ml of warm water 2 tbsp of rapeseed oil

EQUIPMENT: 2 baking trays Good quality parchment paper Rolling pin Mixing bowls

QUICK TOMATO SAUCE 1 tube of tomato puree 1 tsp sugar 50ml of water

METHOD: Read through first then measure out all of your ingredients before starting

TOPPING: GUIDELINE QUANTITIES - YOU CAN ADD AS MUCH AS YOU LIKE

PIZZA BASE

1 large chicken breast (220g) 1 large sweet potato 1 ball of mozzarella

Mix together the flour, yeast and water in a bowl and once a dough is forming add the salt and 43

Food & Drink

To build your pizza, place a sheet of parchment paper onto each of the baking trays and then roll out the dough into 4 individuals or 2 large bases onto your baking trays and push into corners to fit or keep as traditionally shaped round bases.

knead on a floured surface for about 10 minutes. Put the dough back into the bowl, drizzle the oil over it and wrap with cling film. Leave the dough to rise for a couple of hours then turn out onto a floured surface and punch the air out of it. Portion into 4 dough balls and roll out onto your baking trays.

Brush the tomato sauce all over leaving a 1 inch frame around the outside. Now simply just break up the chicken and place all over with chunks of the sweet potato, mushrooms, cloves of roasted garlic, leaves of oregano and chunks of ripped mozzarella. Roll up the slices of salami together and slice into strips then just sprinkle over the pizza with grated mild cheddar and season with sea salt and pepper.

TOMATO SAUCE Squeeze the puree out of the tube into a bowl and mix with warm water and sugar stirring until the sugar has dissolved. This needs to be the consistency of tomato ketchup. TOPPING Switch your oven on to 200oC

Bake in a hot oven for about 12 minutes.

While the dough is rising you can cook the chicken, potato and garlic. Rub a little oil and seasoning onto the chicken breast, bake the potato in it’s skin and put the garlic bulb in the oven in one whole piece. Once cooked you should be able to just squeeze the roasted garlic out of it’s little pods. The potato will take the longest so if you want it all to cook at the same time cut the potato into smallish chunks and toss in oil and seasoning.

SERVING SUGGESTION Garnish the pizza with a mix of rocket and fresh basil leaves dressed in rapeseed oil and grated or shaved parmesan. Serve with roasted new potatoes (toss the potatoes in oil, sea salt and fresh rosemary before roasting.)

Bromsgrove School Charity Dodgeball Rimmer already does with the charity. They chose dodgeball as they wanted an activity which both students and staff could get involved in as they had not seen anything like that happen at the School before. They organised the event themselves from start to finish and have learned just how much goes into organising a large scale event. Dr Dawn Rimmer volunteered and worked with Sense for over 17 years, running respite care holidays for people with complex communication needs such as deafblindness and autism. She now runs three sign language classes per week for students age 8 to 18 as part of Bromsgrove School's activity programme. Business students heard about the great work the charity does from her and therefore chose to support them with their excellent event.

On Friday 9th March, five students from Bromsgrove School organised a charity dodgeball event which raised £240 for Sense UK. The students chose the charity as they wanted to support the work that their teacher, Dr

Insured Patient Hits the Bullseye with Cataract Surgery A delighted West Midlands Hospital patient has used her private health insurance to hit the bullseye for the eye surgery she needed.

Gwen Herbert used her private health insurance for cataract surgery in both eyes.

Hospital a few times before so it has always been very useful and this latest time when I’ve needed the cataracts procedures has been no different.”

Gwen Herbert visited the private hospital for cataract surgery in both eyes and used her insurance to help fund the treatment.

West Midlands Hospital, based in Halesowen, offers a wide variety of treatments including Cosmetic Surgery, Orthopaedic Surgery, Eye Surgery and Spinal Surgery.

The 87-year-old was made aware of the need for surgery following a visit to her local optician.

There are many benefits to insured patients including fast and flexible appointment times, a consultant who stays with the patient throughout the course of treatment and singe en suite rooms.

She was able to get an appointment for surgery quickly with eye specialist Mr Velota Sung after the hospital and consultant were put forward as one of the options by her insurance company Bupa.

Individual pre assessments and priority discharge are also beneficial to patients who use their insurance.

Gwen has visited West Midlands Hospital previously for treatments so had no hesitation in returning for the eye surgery she needed.

Gwen visited the hospital on separate occasions for the cataract surgery on both eyes and stayed on the hospital ward for a night after the operations to give her time to recover before returning home.

Bupa is one of the leading healthcare specialists and provides private healthcare insurance for patients up and down the UK. Gwen of Kingswinford, said: “The hospital is like a second home for me and I know a lot of the staff so as soon as Bupa gave me a choice, there was only one place I wanted to go for surgery.

She says she would have no hesitation in recommending the hospital and private health insurance to other patients. She said: “West Midlands Hospital is a firstclass hospital and service and I feel it has been a privilege to be treated there as an insured patient. The surgery and whole process all went very smoothly.

“I’ve been paying into my health insurance since I was 50 so it’s approaching 40 years now since I started. “I thought about cancelling it at one point but my husband told me to carry on paying for it because I never knew when I might need it.

“I stayed overnight after the operations and the staff couldn’t do enough for me. They are like friends to me and the consultant was excellent too. There is no other place I would rather go to.”

“I’ve used my insurance at West Midlands 51

Nick and Royston's Diary With the weather improving and the new series of` The Real House Wives of Cheshire` back on our screens, Nick & Royston are as busy as ever. Weekend in Paris Their first trip of the year was a birthday treat from close friends Wes and Pete, who whisked them off for a fabulous weekend in Paris. Checking in at the exclusive St James Hotel, they were right in the heart of this beautiful city. Shopping in the streets of Champs- Elysees and Avenue Montaigne, dedicated to its luxury brands, was pure heaven for these four shopaholics. Lunch was at L`Avenue, following on for Champagne cocktails at Cote wonderful place to start the evening and then on to Manko Paris for dinner. An amazing weekend with amazing friends.

Charlotte & Alex Harvey's Wedding. Nick and Royston were delighted to be asked to attend the wedding of Charlotte and Alex Harvey. This gorgeous couple tied the knot at the Award Winning Brockencote Hall. The hotel is in an idyllic setting and could not have any more romantic covered in snow. Nick & Charles did their magic on everyone`s locks and Charlotte looked truly stunning in her lace wedding gown. Friends and clients were among the guests, so the day was not only a very happy one but also great fun. We wish them every happiness. 59

Our Hair & Beauty Launch of Darwin's Kitchen One of Nick & Royston`s favourite bars in Shrewsbury was The Porterhouse, so they were eager to see their new transformation to Darwin`s Kitchen. As neighbouring businesses, friend Ann Ditella has revamped the interior and created a new delicious menu. Guests were invited to Champagne & canapes and Nick & Royston joined Joanne & Malcom Bridgwood to celebrate the success of this new gem in Shrewsbury.

Opening of Club Arvina The latest concept of VIP clubbing experience to hit the Cheshire elite is Club Arvina in Hale. Friends Chris & Laura Bacon want to create a unique service to their clients to include chauffeurs, to make -overs on arrival in their opulent new nightclub. Nick & Royston joined the Cheshire celebs including the stars of Coronation Street, the Housewives and seven billionaires to party the night!!!What a fabulous night, I have a feeling, they will be regulars!!!

Our Wedding

Weddings on a Shoe String These days weddings are expensive. According to Brides Magazine the average wedding comes in at £22K. That’s a sizable amount of money that, let’s be honest, can be put towards something less frivolous such as a deposit for a home or a car to get you to work and back. Yet couples up and down the country are spending their hard earned cash (and in some cases even borrowing money) to have their dream wedding.

budget required for the big bash or even those couples that feel the money is best spent elsewhere, there are ways to arrange an equally special day at a fraction of the cost.

Keep it in the Family There are two key factors to arranging as low budget wedding. The first is to ask for help from your friends and family. Explain that you are doing things differently and ask if they would consider helping you arrange the day. In most cases people will be only too happy to help and often you will find that people offer to do things for you (such as make your wedding cake) as their gift to you. The second factor is that you need to manage your expectations of the day itself. You may need to forgo certain wedding traditions and be a little creative with your planning. Canapés and a traditional three course wedding breakfasts for 100 guests with set you back in the region

But putting the roses and confetti aside, take a moment to consider just what’s most important on your wedding day. Having your family and friends around you to witness the love that you declare for your betrothed has surely got to be top of the list right? So do we really need fireworks, red carpets and hand carved ice sculptures? In this day and age anything goes and for those couples that are falling short of the 67

Our Wedding of £6K so you will need to accept that on a low budget, elements of the wedding will be different. But different can be fun!

second had shops for vintage crockery and add teapots full of flowers and teacups full of rose petals to the table design.

First you need to actually get married so you will need to factor in the cost of the church or registry office. The latter, in most cases, will be cheaper. Right from the off you can save money. Ditch the traditional wedding stationary and save on postage by sending an email invitation. Get creative and design an e-invite to capture the mood of the day. Or why not create a wedding website. There are many to choose from that are free. They also offer so much more, you can have an online budget, store photographs and collect ideas as well and send e-invites and track your RSVPS.

Cheap but Cheerful Continuing down the English country garden theme why not serve an afternoon tea to complement the style of the day. You could serve your guests sandwiches and scones with jam and cream and of course your wedding cake would suit this catering theme perfectly, especially if you had a vanilla sponge cake. You could serve your wedding cake as the dessert. Nothing suits this style of catering more that a pot of tea so this will cut down on your alcohol expense as well. If you want something more substantial you could have a pig roast or a fish and chip van. Many fish and chip shops have an outside catering van and can provide fish and chips etc at your venue depending on the outside space of course.

Something Borrowed Wedding cars are one element of the day that you can easily cut back on by being a bit creative. A traditional wedding car is going to cost you anywhere between £250 - £600. Do you have a family friend or neighbour with a nice, or an unusual car that wouldn’t mind driving you? Buy some ribbons or streamers to decorate it and offer to get the car valeted in return, which will be a fraction of the hire price.

You could offer ice creams. Buy in a selection of cones and a variety of flavours and have fun with the toppings and sprinkles. You would need to find a volunteer to help with the serving or you could even let your guests help themselves. However, if things are very tight then why not ask the guests to contribute to a ‘community wedding’. Invite everyone to bring their own picnic and select a nice quiet corner of your local park. Take rugs, cushions and deck chairs and even a few outdoor games to add to the entertainment. If you choice a spot under a tree you could add streamers, bunting and lanterns to decorate the lower branches.

Dressing Up The venue, food and drink are a very large part of the budget so you will need to think outside the box a little to bring these costs down. Church Halls can be hired very cheaply and often come with tables and chairs that you can use and most have a fairly good kitchen in place and will permit self catering. With a bit of community spirit and a little help from your friends the place can be transformed. Choose a suitable theme such as English country garden and decorate the tables with ribbon adorned jam jars full of meadow flowers or tea lights. Ask people you know to lend you their table linen for the day and scour the

With a little imagination and a little help from your friends you could have a uniquely themed wedding that’s low in cost but big on love and community spirit; what more would you want on your special day!

Our Jobs

Why I Love My Job By Libby Williams MHAO AHDip Animal Healer & Holistic Therapist and Relax HAO Canine massage therapist. I specialise in pet problems, some days I may be helping an anxious cat or an aggressive rabbit, other days I may be working with a parrot that’s pulling out her feathers or a dog that has behavioural issues. Every day is different and wonderful, not only do I ultimately help the animal feel happier but I help the pet parents feel happier too. I make fabulous new fury, and feathered, friends along the way and really enjoy my time with them, however challenging it can sometimes be.

Having just lost my beautiful horse to old age and still grieving for my little cat who had passed a few years earlier I took a long walk in the woods with my dog and contemplated life’s meaning. I so far had enjoyed a long and successful career in sales and account management but I knew that it was time for a change. All my life I had been lucky enough to have been surrounded by animals, they had become my friends, my siblings even. From a very early age living in the countryside I was often found helping any little kitten, duckling or pheasant chick that had come my way, people would often tell me how their pet found it difficult to trust people and were surprised how he or she had instantly settled with me, the truth is that I also felt more settled in the presence of an animal. That night whilst sitting on the sofa snuggled up with my dog I fell upon a website that changed my life forever.

Whilst studying I was fortunate enough to be able to work with all kinds of animals but those that will hold a special place in my heart forever are two little rats, an African Pigmy Hedgehog and Giant African Snail. I know what you’re probably thinking, ‘I was expecting it to be the cute little kittens, the puppies and the bunnies’, and don’t get me wrong they were wonderful too but these little souls just made my heart melt. They had all been rescued by a wonderful lady and were now having a much happier, safer and pain free life. I won’t upset you with the details but I feel so much sadness knowing what some animals have to endure

After lots of studying, many case studies, assignments, practical experience in rescue centres, exams and so on, I’m now a graduate of the Healing Animals Organisation, a qualified registered and fully insured Animal Healer 69

Our Jobs through cruelty or ignorance. Anyway, I know I shouldn’t have favourites but I formed such a close bond with the little rats, they readily absorbed the energy healing and stretched out, rolled, yawned and with a big sigh they lay deeply relaxed basking in and absorbing the healing energy that I was channelling.

African Pigmy Hedgehog As an Animal Healer I work with Energy healing, which is a natural complementary therapy that is non-invasive and has no side effects. It benefits an animal on an emotional level as well as a physical level. All animals can benefit from energy healing, it works holistically on the whole animal rather than individual symptoms. Energy healing promotes deep relaxation and helps restore equilibrium. In this deep state of relaxation, the body is able to heal itself naturally, I believe that a lot of Doctors and Vets will tell you that the greatest healer of all can often be the body itself. I’m so lucky I really love my job, it doesn’t feel like work and to know that I am making a real difference is simply magical. It is important to note that what Libby does is complementary to Veterinary care and not a substitute. An animal with a physical condition should always be seen by a Veterinarian in the first instance.

and smells and as territorial animals, often feel unsafe away from home. They tend not to travel as well as dogs and can be extremely agitated even before they arrive. As a species, they are highly susceptible to stress and prefer quiet environments. Even if you have a very relaxed cat, most will still become exceptionally nervous when in proximity to a dog, so both of our CFC practices have dedicated cat-only waiting areas. Our CFC accreditation means that our reception teams have also been trained in best practice for cat care, so from the moment you call, our team can ascertain how you and your pet can best be accommodated. For example, if your cat is very nervous you may be offered an appointment at a quieter time such as first or last thing or when there are several other cat appointments already booked in. We provide large towels to cover carriers as cats will feel more at ease if they are hidden and cannot see other pets. We can also email you helpful advice sheets in advance of your visit, with tips for helping to get your cat accustomed to their carrier and how to support them when they arrive.

As veterinary professionals, we strive to ensure that a trip to the vets is as enjoyable and stress-free as possible for pets and owners alike. That’s why we are immensely proud to be recognised by the International Society of Feline Medicine (ISFM) as officially cat friendly at our practices in Lye and Sedgley. As Head Nurse at our Lye practice, I am also delighted to have recently passed with distinction my ISFM Certificate in Feline Nursing and I guess it also helps that I am an avid cat-lover and mum to my own precious moggies Billy, Isabella, Chloe and Ellie. So, if memories of your cat’s last trip to the vet are bringing you out in a cold sweat, what can you expect from a visit to a Cat Friendly Clinic (CFC)? Well, our approach starts with a thorough understanding of feline behaviour. Cats are highly sensitive to new sights, sounds

When it’s time for your cat to see the vet, we have strict procedures in place designed with the comfort and needs of your pet in mind. Towels are pre-sprayed with a product that mimics the pheromone cats use to mark spaces as safe. Cats will be lifted onto the 71

examination table whilst still in their carrier and the door will be opened so that they can emerge in their own time and when they feel comfortable. Where possible, cats are allowed to roam the consultation room freely throughout their appointment to further increase their familiarity with their surroundings. Should your cat require further treatment, we have specialist equipment designed to fit a cat’s body comfortably or less intrusively than some conventional equipment. Wherever possible, we prescribe easy-to-administer medication and recovery after their procedure takes place in a dedicated cat-only part of the ward. This is a quiet part of the practice where cats can recover in medium sized crates that face away from other patients, reducing the risk of contamination and further stress. Our highly trained nursing team are constantly Blacks PSP 140mmx106mm OLM PRINT.pdf 1 checking on our recovering feline patients,

When it’s time for your cat to go home, our support doesn’t end there! Our discharge procedure includes plenty of time to discuss your cat’s on-going recovery, together with fact sheets packed with tips and information for supporting your cat over the coming weeks. Above all, our highly qualified team are on hand 24/7 for advice whenever you need it. A trip to the vets needn’t be a drama! Spring Into Summer aiming to show off their diversity and beauty in a natural setting. This is the first time ever that these beautiful Spring-flowering herbaceous plants have been shown as a single exhibit at this prestigious event.

The garden is an enchanted place at this time of year: flowers and bees are in abundance, fresh green foliage is unfurling, tree blossom is out and early clematis clothe walls and fences. Viburnums are probably the most valuable group of shrubs for this time of year with many fine cultivars on offer, often deliciously fragrant and many ideal for small gardens. Rhododendrons and azaleas are also at their peak and their showy brightly coloured blooms will add drama to any garden. It’s also time to get your lawn back into shape as it will be growing quickly now.

Whilst getting ready for the show we have also been busy on the nursery preparing for summer with lots of hanging baskets and containers being planted up in our greenhouses as these still need to be protected from late frosts. These can all be planted out and hung up on display at the end of May when the risk has virtually passed. For the best results, always use a quality compost, add water retaining granules, slow release food tablets and most importantly always choose happy, healthy plants. For up to date show news and jobs to do in the garden, visit our website www.ashwoodnurseries.com

The annual RHS Chelsea Flower Show is held in May and this prestigious event in the gardening calendar is always a reminder of what can be achieved and an inspiration to gardeners everywhere. This year we are returning with an exhibit of our hellebores,

Kids in emergency care get new buddy 83

“Our aim is to deliver 20,200 Buddy Bags to 300 refuges across the UK by 2020. To help support this aim we are looking for individuals or companies who would like to get involved in a community project. They can do this by either sponsoring Buddy Bags in their local area, by donating funds to help pay for the items we put in the bags, or by donating their time to help us fill the bags. 100 % of all donations go 100% into supplying Buddy Bags and they go back into the local community.”

Children who arrive at emergency care refuge centres are now receiving Buddy Bags stocked with essential items, thanks to a foundation set up to support children at one of the most vulnerable stages of their lives. The Buddy Bag Foundation was set up by local entrepreneur Karen Williams just over 24 months ago, in response to the rising number of children in the UK who enter emergency care after fleeing violent situations at home. “Currently over 48,000 children require emergency care in the UK each year,” Karen explains. “Children who arrive in emergency care often come with nothing but the clothes or pyjamas they are standing up in.”

We have just celebrated packing 13,000 Buddy Bags making a difference to 13,000 children in emergency care” For more information visit our website www. buddybagfoundation.co.uk.”

“Restoring a sense of safety and security into a child’s life during a traumatic time is one of the first steps to recovery. Our Buddy Bags are something a child can call their own, no matter where they go.

Try not to rely on others too much. You are the leader of the pack and now seems to be the time to assume your role as the person in charge. Tread cautiously though, because all of that power could also make you the head of blame!

"Never put down to malice what you can put down to stupidity”. There seem to be those around you who are trying their luck to see how far they may be able to push you. A bit of steadfastness now is all that is needed to give you control.

Reinvention and renewal are the words that seem to summarize the weeks ahead. You may have to tread on strange ground or perhaps work in unfamiliar surroundings. Either way, you’ll probably find that a change is as good as a rest.

In most cases, and especially in that of Dudley Building Society, there are friendly, knowledgeable advisers that are on hand and happy to discuss what accounts may be best suited to someone’s specific saving requirements. The Society’s ISA range includes a 45 day notice, one and five year fixed, instant access and junior account options as well as loyalty ISAs for existing Society members.

Talbots start Charity of the Year activity with £10k boost for Birmingham Children’s Hospital Charity Executive of Talbots Law. “We always kick-start the year of fundraising by donating an initial sum and then we hope to build on this through a host of different activities that will be organised by the firm and our employees. The emphasis is on getting as many people involved as possible.”

(l-r) Eloise Davidson (Birmingham Children’s Hospital), Mary Mocklow and Ian Bond (both Talbots Law)

“Ian Bond and I visited Eloise Davidson and Paul Moore at Birmingham Children’s Hospital Charity to present the cheque and find out a little bit more about the amazing care they provide every day of the week, every week of the year.”

Staff from a leading Black Country law firm have pledged their support to help Birmingham Children’s Hospital carry out its life-saving care.

Birmingham’s Children’s Hospital, which was rated as ‘Outstanding’ by the CCQ in February 2017, looks after 90,000 children and young people from across the country every year.

Talbots Law named the UK’s leading specialist paediatric centre as its ‘Charity of the Year’ and has already presented it with a £10,000 donation to help it deliver treatments, complex surgical procedures and cuttingedge research to young people up to the age of 16.

It operates a national liver and small bowel transplant centre and is a global centre of excellence for complex heart conditions, the treatment of burns, cancer, liver and kidney disease. Talbots staff have already taken part in the ‘Big Bandage Day’ and are looking forward to embarking on a London to Paris bike ride and a daunting Snowdon Challenge.

Employees from across the company’s seven offices were invited to nominate their preferred good causes and, following much deliberation, the three most popular choices were put forward for a final vote that was made at the business’ annual party.

Talbots has seven offices in Codsall, Dudley, Halesowen, Kidderminster, Stourbridge, Stourport and Wolverhampton.

“There was a lot of personal stories of families and friends that have been helped and supported by Birmingham Children’s Hospital so the decision was a comprehensive one in the end,” explained Mary Mocklow, Chief

Wills, Trusts & Probate Solicitors Life is full of twists and turns. We can’t predict the future, but we can plan for it. That’s why writing a will makes good sense. Without a will, you leave your estate in the hands of uncertainty. Writing a will may not be something you’ve thought about. Most people don’t think about will writing until late into their senior years. Some don’t think about it at all. It’s often assumed that with or without a will, your assets will pass to your children, your spouse or whoever your nearest and dearest happens to be. If this were the case, our wills solicitors would have a lot of free time on their hands. However, if you die without putting one in place, your assets will be divided however the judge sees fit.

Ian Bond— Head of Trusts & Estates

Our wills and probate solicitors are industry specialists; and we understand the unpleasant nature of these conversations. Nobody knows what the future holds; and while we always hope for the best, planning for the worst is not a bad idea. For life’s uncertainties, put your trust in Talbots Law. Men are from Mars, women are from Venus A report from law firm Pinsent Masons and gender equality charity the Fawcett Society, concluded that women, in later life, face being in a worse financial situation than men. Their findings reported that “the risks they face are both more numerous and may overlay one another”. These risks include such issues as the gender pay gap which identifies women typically earn less than men over the course of their careers. In addition it is usually the women that take the career break when starting a family and many return to work on a part-time basis and so earn reduced salaries. Both of these points affect their ability to save for the future.

Anita Gatehouse Our Lifestyle’s Financial Expert

can either be patronising or dismissive or sometimes too impatient to really understand and inform the woman sitting in front of them. This can result in what the report described as stereotype threat, where a person who is reminded of the stereotypical assumptions made about them will unconsciously begin to behave in a stereotypical fashion. Women generally have a more balanced view of wealth and are always asking me about ways they can use money to create security and peace of mind. This is not only for themselves but also to help look after other people and things that are important in their lives. If the assumption is that women do not understand the financial world and are unwilling to take on any investment risk, it follows that they are far more likely to leave a male adviser’s office having accepted a low risk strategy chosen for them rather than with them. However, when it comes to actually investing, assuming that they are empowered to make informed choices, it’s no surprise to me that research suggests that women make better investors than men. According to David Bach, author of ‘Smart Women Finish Rich’, this is because they generally create a plan and then stick to it. If you would like a free 30 minute meeting to discuss your own position, telephone Jo on 01562 745730 to book an appointment or email joanne@cre8wm.co.uk. Have a look at what our clients say about us on our website: www.cre8wm.co.uk

A significant point raised in the report is that “women’s attitudes and priorities when considering their financial future differ from those of men”. In my experience, I would agree that there do tend to be differences in circumstances and also behavioural differences between men and women. Women generally live longer than men, so it’s highly likely that most women will have to fend for themselves at some point in time and so need to plan for the long-term. I believe a barrier to some women taking control and planning, is that the financial advisory world has been and continues to be, male dominated, putting some women off seeking advice. Too often I hear tales of women’s poor experiences with some male advisers who

Vauxhall Insignia Grand Sport The arrival of the latest Vauxhall Insignia has taken the company in to new territory, it is moving in to the upper exclusive premium segment and it could be a match for the BMW, Audi and Mercedes driver.

the lower emission engines, sadly since we are now in the 2018 tax year and excise duty rates have changed dramatically and the days of very low or exempt excise rates have disappeared.

Time will tell if this is a brave move or otherwise, writes Bob Hickman.

The new Insignia has had an update on the interior and this has given more comfort for the occupants, the infotainment system has also benefited from some extra features. The home star service for example has hotel bookings and parking can be pre-booked. What I was most impressed with was the Bose sound system that offers top quality audio for an enhanced listening pleasure.

The Insignia has been around since 2008 and the new model has very elegant lines, and aerodynamics to die for, a rather nice large coupe style. The UK is the biggest market in the whole of Europe for Insignia and that is where Vauxhall are hoping of great things.

There is more interior space due to the reduced boot space as previously mentioned and there is now a 40/20/40 layout so large awkward size items can be carried by dropping of the rear seats.

The new model is bigger, longer, wider than most other cars in the segment and also has a longer wheelbase and a larger body and a wider track then its predecessor. It is also surprisingly 175 kgs lighter than the out going version. This all translates to rear headroom which has been increased by 8mms and legroom by a quite lengthy 25mms. This was achieved by a reducing slightly the boot space, the boot is still however an excellent feature.

The driving dynamics of the Insignia were especially rewarding, the steering is responsive with excellent feedback and not over sensitive or overly assisted. The gearbox was smooth and very positive and the ratios appear to be correctly chosen by the design team.

There are choice of engines, 3 petrol and 3 diesel. A new 1.5 lire turbo charged petrol unit that produces either 140 or 165 bhp, in addition a 2.0 litre petrol that produces a claimed 260 is also an option. The diesels are a choice between 1.6 litres producing either 110 or 136 bhp or a larger 2.0 litre that produces either 170 or 210 bhp.

The Insignia will I am sure continue to win friends in the fleet sector but I suspect Vauxhall would prefer the market to be more private buyers where margins are better. With the recent introduction of an Estate model badged as a Tourer It is my belief that even more buyers may be won over to the brand. The new Insignia will no doubt continue to be a top seller for the Vauxhall range and with prices ranging from ÂŁ17,635 to ÂŁ33,375 there could well be a vehicle that fits in to your price category.

There are economics of running these new engines and the benefit in kind saving could be substantial for certain types of business user, almost ÂŁ2,000 could be saved due to 97
