CREATE AN EXTRA ROOM OUTDOORS WITH JENNIFER SUZANNE INTERIORS TOP STYLING TIPS. With the clocks going forward and the excitement of better weather on the horizon it’s a good time to start planning your outdoor living space and what better way to start with some of my expert tips…

Also outdoor rugs are becoming more popular and are great way of zoning the patio area and give a real sense of a living space. There are also lots of optional stylish outdoor rugs you can leave outside.

SPRING CLEAN UP Firstly I recommend to clean the patio area and give all your existing furniture a good spruce up, sweep up the fallen leaves, mow the lawn and weed the borders, prune the hedges, a good outdoor spring clean! My top favourite furniture go to is showerproof rattan it’s look so stylish but is hardwearing and comfortable.

Throws and sheepskin look and feel great and draped off the back of your garden chairs look inviting and cozy and will keep the chill off your guests if they forget to bring a jacket. Another idea is outdoor pouffe great for putting your feet up and relaxing, think of choosing woven or jute material pouffe which is a great material and can hold up a few bits of rain drizzle.

COMFY, COZY TEXTILES A great way to inject colour and pattern into your patio area is cushions. I visualize the area and treat it like an overall space and an extension to your home choosing a colour theme and style elements to compliment the home interiors weather its country or

I’m no garden expert but appreciate a wellplanted garden. I’ve always been a huge fan of the benefits of biophilla design and the importance it has on our well-being, health and emotional comfort. I especially appreciate the wildlife that plants encourage and the relaxing sound of bees buzzing about and birds and butterflies fluttering creating a truly magical garden experience.

Garden lighting can suit all budgets, for a less expensive option up cycle your empty glass jars as they look great when used en masse with a bag of tea light candles and have the glass arrangement at different heights to make it less formal and more relaxed. If you have a pergola or garden trees you can suspend decorative festoon lights or weave in pretty fairy lights for an enchanting look.

My top ultimate favourite is hydrangeas they look so beautiful and classic I’ve got a slight obsession with blue and white hydrangeas, they do so well in pots from my experience, just got to water well on hot days.

Lighting up your garden boarder, fences, and pathways, your outdoor lighting has to suit the garden style. If are you more traditional country or a contemporary designer garden, choose outdoor lighting that reflects your chosen style. Just remember to choose water resistant lighting that is suitable for outdoor use.

Also there is nothing prettier and mood enhancing than the smell of lavender, and I love the symmetry and balance of topiary design, plus there are so many topiary tree varieties holly, laurel, boxwood, and privet that keep your garden looking interesting all year round.

PLANTING

Our Home OUTDOOR MIRROR Last year I invested in a rustic garden mirror and it transformed my garden, especially as I have a small garden it helps to bounce light and gives the illusion of depth and space beyond the wall on which it hangs. Growing in popularity, garden mirrors are must-have garden accessories, enabling you to bring the inside out and create your very own outdoor 'living room' creating a gorgeous outdoor feature. Although some wildlife mainly birds can get a bit confused by mirrors so please be cautious and choose an area where birds are not likely to fly towards. And to avoid a potential fire hazard, ensure that your outdoor mirror isn’t placed in direct sunlight, so shady areas are ideal.

TABLESCAPE ACCESSORIES Create an inviting but relaxed outdoor table scape with natural woven under plates, linen table cloth and napkins, cutlery, plates, glasses and an alfresco drinks tray complete with ice bucket and bottle carriers. STOURBRIDGE RFC RETURNS TO RUGBY! 29th May respectively.

With some hope on the horizon and pandemic restrictions easing, Stourbridge Rugby has been able to return to training since late March.

Two important dates that normally appear on the Stourbridge calendar in May have now been moved to September. The ‘May Weekend’ consisting of the Corporate Lunch and May Ball have become the ‘May to September Weekend’. Restrictions at the time permitting, the Corporate Lunch will be held on Friday 24th September, followed by the ‘May’ Ball on Saturday 25th September. INGREDIENTS 500g of salmon fillet from the middle of the fish with the skin off - ask your fishmonger - I get my fish from Nick at Goughs in tettenhall 50g maldon sea salt 50g Demerara sugar 1 bunch of dill - take of the stalks and chop them up finely - save the fronds of dill for later 1 tsp of pink peppercorns 1 tsp of lightly crushed fennel seeds

METHOD: Thinly slice the fennel and radish. Julienne the lemon - you can cut the peel off carefully with a sharp knife and then cut into strips or use a julienne peeler. Dissolve the salt in the water and submerge the veg in the water then leave in fridge for 24 hours.

CURING Pat the fish dry with a paper towel. Mix your salt, sugar and spices together in a bowl. Place cling film in the bottom of a rectangle glass container or plastic container will do. Pour half the salt mix over the cling film in bottom of the container. Place the salmon on the salt mix and pour the rest over the top of the salmon. Make sure the fish is equally coated with the salt mix. Wrap the cling film around the salmon to seal and place in the fridge for 3 days. Turn it over everyday. After 3 days it will feel tougher and when unwrapping it watch out for the liquid, do it near the sink. Rinse the salmon under the cold tap and pat dry with kitchen roll. When ready to serve slice the salmon as thinly as you like it.

The next day drain the brining liquid from the fennel and rinse the fennel well to remove the salt Pack into a sterilised glass jar - to sterilise the jar simply wash in hot soapy water, rinse off and dry in oven at 120oC for about 15 minutes. Remove rubber seal if your jar has one. You can use Milton which is easier. Heat the vinegar, sugar and spices until the sugar has dissolved and pour into the jar making sure it covers the veg. Leave in the fridge until your salmon is cured.

Why I Love My Job Local Author - Lori Holmes Lori Holmes is a local author whose debut series The Ancestors Saga has captured the imagination of readers around the world.

publishers but, before this could happen, she stumbled upon a course for independent publishing and the rest, as they say, is history.

The Ancestors Saga is set 40,000 years ago as the world faces another glacial period. Many human species teeter on the brink of oblivion and the prize for the survivors will be the Earth itself. The Ancestors Saga combines known pre-history with the unknown; where fantastical human species, as yet undiscovered by science, exist alongside our own forefathers. Ancient Sumerian myths and legends on human creation also play a part to bring this historical romance saga together.

Finding professional editors and book cover artists, all aspects a publisher would ordinarily handle, in addition to learning how to successfully market the books, has proven very challenging, but Lori does not regret the decision to become an independent author. The arrival of her twin sons last summer added a whole new dimension to the task of writing and marketing her books. Lori’s target audience for The Ancestors Saga are New Adult readers (ages 17+), lovers of fantasy and SciFi, though Lori has had many readers state that, while fantasy isn’t their usual choice of genre, they loved immersing themselves in The Ancestors Saga regardless.

Lori has been an avid reader of fantasy and SciFi since she was a little girl and started writing her own stories as a hobby when she was around 18 years old, but it wasn’t until 12 years ago that the idea for The Ancestors Saga came in a flash of inspiration. “At first, the idea for the two main characters was all that existed. The world had yet to be created. It was only after reading articles on the latest historical findings of how different species of ancient human interbred that, like a lightning bolt, everything fell into place”. Lori clearly remembers sitting in her future husband’s car when this happened and knew then that she had something worth writing.

Lori claims the best part of being an author is getting lost in her own world and not knowing where her characters will take her next. Probably a cliche answer from an author but very true! Lori has received many wonderful reviews for her books and values them all. One of her favourites, however, came from a 91-year-old gentleman in Australia who told of how he had started reading fantasy during World War II when the American soldiers brought their fantasy novels with them while stationed in Australia and thus kick started his love for the genre. “To have feedback from such a connoisseur of fantasy novels was a real honour”.

Lori wrote the first novel, which has now become the second book in the series, Daughter of Ninmah, while working as a secretary at New Cross hospital, where she had been working for over ten years. Lori initially planned to publish traditionally by finding an agent for her work and approaching 48

Rabbits actually don’t cope well in hot weather and can overheat and get sunstroke if exposed to direct sunlight for too long. It’s important to keep a careful eye on them particularly on very hot summer days. Always ensure that there is plenty of shade for your little friend and if it gets too hot outside bring them indoors. You could also give your rabbit some fresh vegetable treats to help hydrate them, celery in particular can help keep the little soul hydrated, chop the vegetables in to chunks and only feed small amounts as treats. If you really want to spoil your furry friend, you can give them a tasty piece of strawberry to enjoy, don’t do this too often though as he or she will get a poorly tummy.

At this time of year Flystrike can be a problem for rabbits, many flies are harmless but some, such as the bluebottle will lay their eggs on poor bunnies’ fur. When the eggs hatch the maggots begin to eat the rabbit’s flesh and sadly this can cause shock and death in a very short amount of time. Flies are particularly attracted to soiled or damp fur around bunny’s bottom so it’s good practice to check your rabbit daily throughout the year anyway, but especially in the warmer weather to ensure that they are clean and healthy. Pay particular attention to their behind, keep this area well groomed, clean and dry which will help minimise the risk of Flystrike and ensure that any issues are dealt with immediately. Should you notice any problems, ensure that you contact your Veterinary Surgeon as soon as possible.

Rabbits love company so why not spend some time in your garden with your little friend. While they are safely in their run munching on some lovely grass, you could plan out a little vegetable patch and herb garden so that you and your rabbit can enjoy some lovely fresh home-grown treats. Basil, parsley and oregano for example are all lovely tasty treats for a bunny and are also great to add to your own food. Rabbits absolutely love Dandelions too, they can eat the leaves as well as the flower, these along with twigs can be mixed into the rabbit’s hay and be hidden to make his or her life more interesting. In the wild rabbits would forage for a large percentage of their time. Something for bunny to safely chew on would

Palermo's Cathedral Prior to the outbreak of Covid 19, I was fortunate to visit Sicily, which is only an hour’s flight from Rome. For ardent explorers considering future destinations, Palermo offers a plethora of adventures.

Steeped in a fascinating, rich and vibrant history, Palermo was once a Phoenician colony, an Arab emirate and a Norman kingdom. The locals exude a warm and laid back attitude and the lack of petty council regulations allows local restaurants, bars and shops to open and close at will.

Other attractions include the splendid Palazzo Reale, one of the finest courts of Medieval Europe, adapted by the Normans from the original Saracen palace, by creative Arab architects and gifted craftsmen. The Palatine Chapel within was built between 1132 and 1143. The intricate interior, richly carved ceilings and ornately patterned marble floors are quite beautiful. The lush green oasis of the Orto Botanico, which houses an extensive variety of exotic plants and the excellent Archeological Museum should satisfy the most discerning nature lovers and culture vultures.

In the evening, young and old gather together around tables, sipping wine, deep in conversation, while the children play together. That continental sedate atmosphere, which is created when families dine ‘alfresco’ demands that you take a seat, relax, order a glass of wine and just enjoy the warm weather or the balmy evening breezes, whilst you admire the surrounding splendour.

For lovers of art, a visit to the Galleria Regionale della Sicilia on Palazzo Abatellis is a must. There are bustling markets in Albergheria and Vucciria and a warren of narrow alleyways with small family owned boutiques displaying the latest Italian fashions. Carrying all those bags, crammed with Italian shoes, bags and clothing can become a burden after a while but, rest assured, the most tantalising aromas drifting from the many restaurants dotted along the way are sure to entice you away from all that extravagant activity!

Sicilian cuisine includes Arab, Greek and Roman influenced recipes making use of the finest local ingredients such as swordfish, pine nuts, red chillies, sardines and capers. Local specialities include ‘pasta con le sarde’ (fresh pasta with sardines and fennel) and ‘pesce spade all ghiotta’ (swordfish cooked in onion and tomato sauce). Any one of these dishes is sure to satisfy the most discerning palate.

Palermo is certainly a fascinating spot and you can be sure of a warm welcome.

CITROEN C3 SHINE PURE-TECH There are a choice of engines within the C3, my test car came equipped with the PureTech 1200cc 3-cylinder version. This produces a meagre 83hp but bearing in mind the size of the vehicle, it was more than adequate. The 5-speed manual gearbox coped admirably in all conditions, a top speed is quoted at 105mph. The 0-60 is a very lethargic 15.2secs and Citroen suggests that a combined fuel figure of 46mpg could be achievable, I managed to achieve 49mpg in a week of varied driving. The CO2 emissions are on the low side at 124g/km.

The car market is awash with the small car varieties, think Fabia, Polo and Fiesta and now the Citroen C3, writes Bob Hickman. Each manufacturers have always done well at making cars that are comfortable and easy on the eye, and the re-worked Citroen C3 is no exception. Citroen’s have style and a knack of making their vehicles to be a little bit unusual and with the C3 they have done this with a multitude of choices of paints and a roof that can be coordinated or contrast, and air bubble panels on the side, that avoid having dinks when somebody opens a door.

I really like the front seats in the C3, they are like your favourite armchair, in fact I am a bit of a sucker for all Citroens upholstery. They are comfortable, but not necessarily that supportive if you start to throw the car around but who buys a C3 to throw it into bends and drive it like a rally car.

The inside is striking, I really loved the throw back of the leather effect door pulls as opposed to the moulded items that we have got used to, a customisation feature, yes, but nice to have something different. 58

Our Motoring There is plenty of space inside especially, for the front passengers, the rear, can accommodate 2 adults, but 2 children in the back would be wonderful. The boot at 300 litres is a reasonable capacity and it can comfortably swallow a pushchair or a couple of suitcases and in addition both rear seats drop forward to give you quite a lot of carrying capacity.

The in-car infotainment had a 7-inch touch screen to operate most of, if not all, of the controls, Apple Car Play and Android Auto were also features and the navigational system was quite easy to operate.

The C3 has very light steering and nice soft suspension to swallow up all those horrendous pot holes we seem to have. Driving in cities, the C3 was an easy companion both comfortable and relaxing. Motorway driving can be tackled without concern bearing in mind the limited amount of power available

What is good investing? My entire existence can be traced back to one chance meeting in Ireland. My mum working in a restaurant, served my Father who was there on business. Having finished his day of meetings he is enjoying a drink in the hotel restaurant ‘admiring my Mum’. She informs him that he can’t drink in the restaurant without ordering food. ‘So, I’ll order some chips’ he replies so he can stay to continue admiring. By the end of her shift, they have become acquainted and the rest as they say is history.

you see them? Two, three times a year? What do they have left, maybe 20 years? That’s 60 more times you get to see them? That’s it. 60 more times. Are you making the most of these times? I sometimes wonder about that chance meeting. What if my father had been on business somewhere else? What if my Mother had worked a different shift? What if a different waitress had served him? Change the detail of that moment in time and they may not have met and you would not be reading these words!

The best investment you can make has nothing to do with cash, stocks or bonds and everything to do with the quality of your relationships. And the most central relationships you will have throughout your life will likely be your immediate and extended family.

I also wonder what I don’t know about that chance meeting and the ‘courting’ that proceeded. There are so many things I don’t know about the set of people that I have spent my life with. What about you? How much do you know about your parents? What about the rest of your extended family?
