HIGH QUALITY BATHROOM TRANSFORMATION Jackie said, “I felt really comfortable when I visited the Roman Bathrooms showroom and we worked well together as the designs developed. Roman Bathrooms took care of everything, including some complex alterations that were needed to the ceilings. “The installation team were also great, they understood what I wanted to achieve and listened to any concerns I had as the project progressed. “Both rooms are quite small but the new sleek designs make the space look much more spacious and lighter now. I would absolutely recommend Roman Bathrooms, especially to anyone as fussy as I am!”

When Jackie was looking to re-design a house bathroom and ensuite, she wanted a company that could meet her high standards in terms of quality of product and installation. “I am very fussy and knew that the company selected would have to be just as particular about every as detail as me,” said Jackie. Happily for Roman Bathrooms, we were able to meet her expectations and she is delighted with her two new bathrooms. Jackie had not changed the two bathrooms since the house was bought and wanted to bring them in line with the rest of the house, as well as make them look more spacious and modern.

WINTER COLOURS By Jane de Weijer : Make Space Interiors ltd contact: jane@makespaceinteriors.co.uk

Hello With winter on the horizon and those dark, chilly evenings to look forward to, I am looking at the latest colours, the textured throws and coloured glass that interior designers are using right now to create a cosy and warm earthy space that is perfect relax in.

8

Our Home The Colour Rust Red We’ve seen colours getting deeper and stronger over the past few years. If you are looking to refurbish, redecorate or realign your interiors to bring them up to date, do not shy away from rich shades. It’s a great time of year to create a warm, earthy mood - a cosy retreat is the antidote we need to all that is going on in the world at large. Milan Design Week included an exhibition by Google. This interactive experiment saw participants wearing wristbands that measured their responses to colour. They found that the warm, deep reds soothed and created calm responses. In response, I have created my rich red board. Changing accessories, such as using different styles of pendant light fittings, will always alter the mood and theme of the room. Here we have full-on glamour, with large metallic shade by Heals, or contrast with crisp, white pendant clusters from Cult furniture.com.

9

Our Home Gift Inspiration Throws A throw is an essential in the winter months – use to add that pop of colour to the room. Go traditional or contemporary with 100% natural fibres and you have something to pass down through the generations. It’s well worth the investment! Choose from the selection of throws here in current colours and designs. Good for texture, thick, chunky throws and cushions will add effortless style to your cosy autumn/winter room. Soft pastel shades can add depth to a neutral colour scheme, while vibrant shades will emphasise the contrasts.

10

Our Home The Impact Coloured glass A love and celebration of colour has extended to all materials and finishes in current interiors. I love coloured glass because it can make a real impact in your room. Used with tea lights or placed to reflect the low lights in the room, they are perfect for this time of year. Combine shapes and cluster vases together for maximum impact. hEither keep the colour spectrum neutral, with similar colour tones, for example a combination of blues or greens, or go bold by mixing and matching. The choice is yours.

11

Our Home Christmas gifts Now is the time of year to choose those stocking fillers or Secret Santa gifts for family, friends and colleagues. I have put together a selection from the websites etsy.com and notonthehighstreet. com. They specialise in personalised gifts and you are bound to find something appropriate for everyone. Have a very happy Christmas and a good festive season!

Furnished for quality and give honest advice. Most of our customers recommend us to friends and families, which signifies that we are doing something right."

There are few items that turn a house into a home more than a comfortable settee or an easy chair. Of course, they need to be well made. The last thing any of us wants when we settle down to watch TV or read a book is for cushions to sag or legs to buckle.

If it’s upholstered, anything can be made, from sofas and chairs, headboards to coffee tables. Need something bespoke? Most items can be adapted to suit different room shapes and sizes. Stain-resistant chemical treatments are also available.

If you’re looking for furniture that will keep you cosy for years, head to Park Lane Furnishings, in Halesowen.

Visitors to the showroom in Park Lane can choose from a wide range of styles, colours and fabrics, from chenille to velvet, plains to plaid. Designer fabrics are also available. The team’s services are also popular with people who wish to have items re-covered. This can be done in a week and is ideal for those who want a fresh look but don’t want to change their favourite chair.

Since its launch in 2011, the company, which is proud to be a British manufacturer, has gained a reputation for high-quality service and workmanship and consistent prices all year round. Director Andy Cutler explained: “We don’t have seasonal sales events because we’re a manufacturer and I’m a firm believer that you get what you pay for, so we strive to supply the best quality at reasonable prices all year round. We simply make better quality furniture built to last, with no pressurising sales staff in our showroom. We listen to our customers’ needs

RECENT CARPET TRENDS Just like the fashion catwalk, there are distinct trends in the world of carpet. Neutral carpets have been top of the heap for years now, especially in shades of grey, however more people are moving towards brighter or deeper colours. We find our customers especially like to try out some colour in hallways, stairs and landings. A colourful patterned runner up the stairs adds enormous interest and personality, whilst not interfering too much with other soft furnishings. We have a fabulous new selection of stair runners in stock from the Alternative Flooring Quirky Range. You are sure to find a colour to co-ordinate with your other furnishings or you could always pick your carpet first and co-ordinate your other furnishings with it! WORCESTER REMOVAL COMPANY DONATES DAY'S INCOME TO HELP OSCAR A REMOVAL company is donating a day's income to help Oscar, a little boy who desperately needs specialist medical care.

really touched us in a way that not much else has the ability to. "That is why, on Friday, we will be donating all of our income (every penny - £2,186 to be exact) to this incredibly worthy cause."

Warren Leggett, director of Warren's Removal's and Storage in Worcester, said: "After seeing the amazing amount of generosity from local companies it’s only right we do our bit, too."

Staff, wages and fuel will be funded by Warren himself.

Oscar Saxelby-Lee, aged five, has T-cell Acute Lymphoblastic Leukaemia. Sadly, Oscar's recent stem cell transplant hasn't cured him, meaning that he urgently needs further treatment that the NHS cannot fund. Oscar's parents had the challenge of raising £500,000 to fund either a second transplant or enrolment onto Car-T therapy in Singapore.

Hand in Hand for Oscar, the campaign to raise the money needed for Oscar's treatment has now raised over £400,000. This has been raised through the tireless fundraising efforts of local individuals and businesses. Oscar's mum Olivia Saxelby posted on facebook, page: "You are all utterly, utterly incredible and we are beyond grateful to you for every single thing you have done, and continue to do, to help us get Oscar the life saving treatment he so desperately needs."

Mr Leggett continued: "Helping one person might not change the world, but it might change the world for one person... "It’s cliche, but we so often take for granted the most important things in life: health, family, and peace of mind.

The family still need to raise the final £100,000 to fund Oscar's treatment. https://www.justgiving.com/crowdfunding/ hand-in-handforoscarsaxelby-lee

Our Travel

Ahoy there! All aboard the

Crystal Mozart!

by Rebecca Underwood, Travel Journalist For those seeking to escape the constant demands of life in the fast lane and yearning for that elusive tranquil space, a voyage on board the Crystal Mozart is just the ticket.

My mother and I embarked on the elegant and sleek Crystal Mozart for the round-trip 10-night ‘Treasures of the Danube’ voyage, sailing from Vienna. We were thrilled with the prospect of cruising the enchanting Danube Wachau Valley, and visiting Durnstein, Melk, Linz, Passau, Bratislava and Budapest.

Recipient of the Condé Nast Traveller’s Readers Choice Award for ‘World’s Best Cruise Ship’ for 24 years and winner of the ‘World’s Best Large Ship Cruise Line’ by Travel and Leisure readers for 20 years, Crystal Cruises provides the highest levels of comfort and service and a luxurious cruise experience in every sense.

Check-in procedures were swift and efficient; we were escorted to our stylish suite and delighted to discover a welcome bottle of chilled sparkling wine awaiting our arrival. All suites feature a Nespresso coffee machine and a well stocked mini-refrigerator; 24 hour room service, with options available from the excellent Waterside Restaurant; a 40inch flat-screen interactive television with complimentary movies on demand and an extensive music library with plenty of soothing tunes to encourage relaxation.

Launched in July 2016, the Crystal Mozart offers a choice of suites ranging from 82 to 20.3 square metres and penthouses from 61.6 to 30.6 square metres. With a total passenger figure of 158 and a crew of 92, the passenger to crew ratio is an impressive 1.67, which remains the highest in river cruising. The vessel’s length of 120.44 metres and width of 22.85 metres ensures that she is the largest river cruise ship in Europe.

Every suite also has an Apple iPad, which serves as a digital directory for each passenger’s needs, including pillow menus, a 28

Our Travel 2000 enhanced the flavours perfectly. Blue, a chic cafĂŠ, serves upscale bistro fare for lunch and includes global comfort food and shareable plates, while the Bistro Mozart offers coffees, delicious pastries and charcuterie by day and wines and tapas during the evening. And, in the unlikely event that a beverage and snack is needed, particularly during the wee hours, the Pantry, which is a self service venue, offers speciality coffees, teas, wines and nonalcoholic beverages.

Crystal Mozart Deluxe Suite with a French balcony.

After dining, we headed for the Crystal Cove Piano Bar and we were enchanted by the performance of the talented soprano Ioana Mitu, accompanied by Francesco Carlo Leone expertly tinkling the ivories of a magnificent Bosendorfer piano. The party was still in full swing when we returned to our stateroom, slipped on our fluffy bathrobes and comfy slippers and retired. Our ultra comfortable beds, swathed in crisp, white Egyptian linens and plump pillows, guaranteed a deep slumber and the gentle movement of the shifting waters of the Danube created a soothing sense of well being.

first rate butler, concierge, and room service, in addition to weather forecasts and destination information. Following our afternoon tipple we made our way to the chic Crystal Cove lounge and whilst sipping on tea and indulging in a few tasty snacks, we got to know some of our fellow passengers and our conversations soon centred on dining options and excursions. Recipient of the 2017 Cruise Critic UK Editor’s Pick Award for Best Dining, Crystal Cruises is recognised throughout the industry for its culinary expertise. The Crystal Mozart offers guests open seating in a choice of dining venues, from the casual Waterside Restaurant, which presents locally sourced ingredients highlighted in continental and regionally inspired breakfast, lunch and dinner menus. The succulent slow-roasted lamb shank, served with shallots, thyme-balsamic flavoured gravy, garlic mashed potato and olive oil roasted vegetables, accompanied by a glass of Barbaresco Sori San Lorenzo, Angelo Gaja Langhe 2013 was simply divine. For an elegant and more intimate dining experience, the Vintage Room seats up to 12 diners for optional luncheons and dinners featuring vintage wines and Champagnes paired with extravagant menus and I was fortunate to sample the 36 hours slow roasted beef short ribs served with a black truffle, Macallan, celeriac, onions and potato confit. The Chateau Latour Pauillac, Bordeaux

Our Travel Up with the larks and following a brisk walk around the promenade deck, we headed for a rejuvenating yoga class, then enjoyed a dip in the gorgeous indoor pool, and for a spot of pampering I headed for the on board spa for a well earned deep tissue muscle massage and a spell in the steam room. Thoroughly relaxed, I made my way to the library to select a good book and to make plans for the coming days.

keep fit and work off those calories, after succumbing to the tempting dessert menus, there is an on board fitness centre equipped with modern machines, cardio equipment and free weights. Our Treasures of the Danube voyage was an exceptional river cruise experience and one of the many highlights was the tribute to Dame Julie Andrews, a Godmother to Crystal Cruises, which was presented in the Palm Court, the ship's main entertainment venue. The focus was on her unforgettable contribution to the Austrian - American film The Sound of Music and the passengers were easily encouraged to take part in a hearty sing-along.

Passengers are welcome to explore each port unescorted or select one of the on board eBikes, or choose from a wide variety of excursions, many of which provide the opportunity to get an up-close and personal destination experience with tours led by local experts and artisans. Other excursions include gastronomic adventures with hands-on cooking and the chance to sample signature dishes and specialities related to each port. Cultural tours include popular museums and architectural sites and there are exhilarating adventures for the very active. All excursions are limited to 15 guests, which ensures that a more personal experience is attainable. There is also the option to design a personal itinerary with the assistance of the on board concierge service.

Another highlight was the fascinating lecture on the life and work of Johannes Chrysostomus Wolfgangus Theophilus Mozart, who, in 1781 visited, and later settled in, Vienna. The prolific and highly influential composer, who was proficient on the violin and piano at the age of 5, created more than 600 works, including outstanding examples of symphonic, concertante, chamber, operatic, and choral music.

We spent our mornings exploring the sights on land, relaxing afternoons on the promenade deck, sipping on cocktails whilst constantly admiring uninterrupted views of the intoxicating scenery and tranquil snoozes on the comfy loungers on the sun deck. To

On our last evening aboard, passengers gathered in the Waterside Restaurant for another sumptuous dinner and glasses were held high as a toast was proposed to the genius of Mozart and also to the Crystal Mozart, surely the most dazzling treasure of the Danube.

OVER 100 YEARS EXPERIENCE

Welcome to the Roe Deer

Sitting on the outskirts of Wordsley, Stourbridge, the Roe Deer was once a family home called Lawnswood House. Built during the reign of King George III between 1813 and 1816 it contains many beautiful attributes of the Regency style, including wonderful high ceilings and huge casement windows that flood the rooms with natural light, a grand staircase and rooms to squirrel away in next to stunning fireplaces, some of which overlook the historic garden. This beautiful, landmark building now has a large bar at the heart of the building, packed with an ever-growing collection of gins and malts, an array of ever-changing local ales and a fine wine collection that complements our daily menu. Outside there is a stone terrace to the front, which enjoys sunsets framed by the grand old trees, and views out across the lawn and the fields beyond. Upstairs, enjoying the same views, you will find a private dining room, which will comfortably seat 14, perfect for larger family gathering or smaller business meeting. We would love for you to join us this festive time, whether you're gathering as a family or for an office get-together, dining from our Christmas menu (take a look at our website for details), or just popping in to reward yourself with a warming drink and a moment's peace by the fire. Find us on Facebook - Facebook.com/roedeerpub - to keep up to date with all of our festive plans. Jon and the team are on hand to welcome you, your family and friends and even your dog. We hope to see you soon.

MUSHROOM BOUDIN BLANC WITH SHALLOTS, SAGE AND APPLE. SERVES 6.

Traditional boudin blanc is a white version of a black pudding, made from pork but without the blood. However, this is a fabulous plant-based version, which will make an incredible centerpiece for any vegetarian’s Christmas lunch. INGREDIENTS allergens in bold

BOUDIN BLANC 1 kilo of shroomdogs sausages contains sulphites 4 large banana shallots 1 can butterbeans Fresh sage leaves Fresh thyme Bramley apple Nutmeg Maldon sea salt

GRAVY Handful dried mushrooms 3 cups veg stock 1 tbsp plant spread 1 onion, finely diced 4 garlic cloves, roasted until a paste 3 tsp cornflour Fresh rosemary and thyme Sea salt and black pepper

38

PEARL BARLEY RISOTTO 200g pearl barley 1 large leek, trimmed and washed 100g petit pois Flat leaf parsley 600ml water Vegetable stock jelly Maldon sea salt Thyme sprigs Garlic clove whole 3 tbsp of nutritional yeast

Our Food & Drink • Peel the skin from the ‘shroomdogs (*contain sulphites) or Linda McCartney Sausages work well, too, but they contain soya

• Turn the heat down and simmer for 20 minutes then add in the diced leek and simmer for a further 15 minutes before adding the petit pois and nutritional yeast.

• Drain the liquid from the butterbeans and set aside for later. Keep the liquid to one side.

• You need to retain some of the cooking liquor to make your risotto creamy. If your barley looks dry add some of the butterbean juice and then add some chopped flat leaf parsley. Check the seasoning, add Maldon salt, if needed, and sprinkle with more yeast and chopped parsley.

• Peel and quarter the red onions, toss in oil, thyme and 1 minced garlic clove and roast for about 30 minutes. • Mash the beans, onions and vegan sausages together thoroughly with grated apple and chopped thyme and sage leaves then roll in parchment paper to get a sausage shape. Go thin or fat, it’s up to you.

• Unwrap your boudin blanc and serve on a carving board at the table. • For the gravy, sweat the onion in plant spread with chopped herbs and make veg stock in a jug. In a coffee grinder blitz the dried mushroom to a powder. Add garlic paste, cornflour, mushroom powder, and then veg stock and simmer until thick.

• Wrap with foil into a large Christmas cracker shape and roast for 1 hour (or less time if you make thinner shape) on your roasting tray. • Once cooked, allow it to cool for about 20 minutes in the foil.

USEFUL INFO

• While the boudin cools, cook the pearl barley in veg stock. Bring the water to the boil, add the veg stock, garlic clove, thyme sprigs and barley, boil for 5 minutes, skimming off any scum that floats to the top.

EQUIPMENT

SPONGE

200g granulated sugar

Silicone bundt tin 9 inch

340g plain flour

300g roasted pumpkin purée

Kitchen Aid mixer with K beater attachment

2 tsp baking powder ½ tsp of sea salt ½ tsp ground ginger ½ tsp ground cloves ½ tsp ground nutmeg ½ tsp allspice 200ml cold pressed rapeseed oil 50g natural yoghurt

Icing 200g dark brown sugar 55g salted butter

Metal skewer Spatula Clean towel

70ml of double cream Handful of whole almonds, roasted for 12 minutes at 175C (when cool, crush in a food bag with a rolling pin)

½ tsp of bicarbonate soda

Roasting tray

4 large eggs

METHOD Mix the flour, baking powder, salt, bicarb and spices together in a bowl, then set aside.

Allow to cool for an hour and then invert onto a board to remove cake from the silicone mould.

Whisk together the oil, eggs, yogurt, both sugars, pumpkin purée and vanilla extract in another bowl.

Whilst the cake is cooling make the icing. Bring the brown sugar, butter and cream to the boil, stirring continuously for 1 minute and remove from the heat. Gradually whisk in 125g icing sugar and a pinch of Maldon sea salt then drizzle the mixture over your bundt. As the icing drips down the sides of your cake, sprinkle over the roasted, bashed-up almonds.

Mix the contents of the 2 bowls together and beat until you have a well-combined, thick batter. Pour the mixture into the bundt mould to about two-thirds full and bake for 1 hour at 170C fan - test with a skewer. It is cooked when it comes out clean. Make some cupcakes with any leftover batter.

Serve with a good strong cup of tea or favourite Christmas tipple. 40

BROMSGROVE TRIUMPH OVER BEDE’S TO BECOME U17 NATIONAL CRICKET CHAMPIONS

Bromsgrove Senior Cricket side are now National Champions after triumphing over Bede’s on Wednesday 4th September in the National Final at Loughborough.

the prized wicket of Worrell in particular, with an unplayable delivery. Spin twins Freddie Fallows and Dan Meredith then squeezed through the middle overs to build the pressure, bowling 14 over for 45 runs with three wickets falling. Henry Marshall and Jasper Davidson returned to bowl important overs towards the end, before Joe Miszkowski stepped up to bowl three fantastic overs under huge pressure, taking 2 wickets for 18 runs from his 3 overs, including the last over with 9 runs to defend. With two stumpings and a run out in the final over, Bromsgrove became National Champions by 5 runs in an amazingly close final. Special mention also goes to Tom Cosh - taking three stumpings and two fantastic run outs under pressure.

After winning the toss, Bede’s took early wickets to reduce Bromsgrove to 36-3. Bromsgrove recovered with a stand of 42 between Awais Mohammed and Mo Talukder, which started a slow, but assured rebuild. Awais then took control of the innings, batting through to make 78 not out, an outstanding match winning innings. Cameos from Freddie Fallows and Henry Marshall helped Bromsgrove stay in the game and post 158 from their 35 overs. This was slightly below par, but Bede’s were most impressive, with their fielding being the best the School has seen this year. Very good bowling from Jasper Davidson, Freddie Fallows and Dan Meredith stemmed the flow of runs and increased the pressure on Bede’s.

Bromsgrove beat King’s, Trent, Shrewsbury, Myrescough, Stamford and eventually Bede’s along the way to become National Champions from 90 Schools who entered.

Bromsgrove took two early wickets to reduce the visitors to 18 for two, with Jasper Davidson taking both - an outstanding spell with the new ball, taking

WHY I LOVE MY JOB BY KARL LOCKLEY, JOINT MANAGING DIRECTOR, LOCKLEY HOMES

housebuilding. We started with two homes in Great Witley, near Malvern in Worcestershire, which went really well.

Lockley Homes is headed by me, my brother Tom Lockley and our chairman Martin Fitzpatrick. We initially refurbished properties, then moved into building one house at a time, and now larger developments of up to ten homes.

We used the money from that to design and build three bungalows in Drakes Broughton, near Pershore in Worcestershire. These sold quickly off-plan via online marketing. We realised that our bungalows were definitely a bit unique.

Our latest project at Honeybourne, near Evesham, is well underway and will deliver eight properties – two two-bedroom houses, three 3-bedroom houses, two 4-bedroom houses and one 2-bedroom bungalow.

The next development was six units in Feckenham, near Redditch in Worcestershire, three of which were bungalows with the same sort of design but with a few changes to features, and this time we built three cottagestyle homes as well. Again, these all sold

We started by creating decent student digs out of old pubs, and after several of these we had accumulated a cash-pot, which we decided to use on what you might call, illustrious 48

quickly off-plan, and we gained about £400 per square foot in sales, which is pretty strong for that part of the Midlands.

He saw something he liked with our work and decided to invest in our company.

We have recently completed Colwall Gardens, nine stunning homes near Malvern, which are now fully occupied and we are approaching completion of Kingsbrooke on a site opposite, which has a range of two and four-bedroom houses, apartments and bungalows.

He’s become a mentor, bringing all his experience into our business, advising us on how to gather the right team – the right consultants, architects, lawyers, finance experts and so on. And from that platform he’s helped us to build things to another level, showing us how to be distinct and different.

My brother Tom and I are very much in this together. Tom’s on site, in his high-vis and boots, and has all the construction skills, while I’m in a suit in the office, meeting landowners, lawyers and planners. We’re opposites, chalk and cheese, and through combining our different skills we’ve got real strength.

He’s not just a shareholder, he’s our mentor and we wouldn’t be where we are today without him.

After school, Tom went straight into construction for various companies, learning the trade from the bottom up, while I went to the University of Reading to study Real Estate, Investment and Finance. A few years ago, we just thought we knew enough to put our own business together, and it’s gone from there.

We now have a fantastic team of ten full time staff, with the ladies in the office as the backbone of the business. Darryl Swallow is our operations manager, Richard Kelley is our construction manager, and between us we pull together a good group of contractors, encourage team-thinking and show everyone the respect they deserve.

When we moved into the Drakes Broughton development, we teamed up with an investor called Martin Fitzpatrick of the Sandpiper Group in Warwick. Martin has since become chairman of Lockley Homes and he is an

That starts on site where we work hard and ends on a Friday night over a beer, and that way of dealing with people not only keeps morale high but also maintains high quality in every aspect of our work. We’re all in it together.

Our Weddings

PLAN YOUR WEDDING LIKE A PROFESSIONAL 5 essential tips to get your plan off to a great start.

1. Set a Budget & Stick to It

The season for proposals is fast upon us. Christmas, New Year’s Eve, and not long after, Valentine’s Day, are the three most popular dates in the year for engagements. Every a newly engaged couple will be filled with excitement as they start to arrange their special day. A wedding is one of the most important days in any young couple’s lives, so there is plenty to do to get the day they want and the price they can afford. Everything from choosing suppliers such as photography, floral arrangements and wedding cars to making checklists and finding a venue will give the Bride and Groom ‘to be’ plenty of things to research and plan right up to the moment when they say “I Do“.

We all know that weddings can be very expensive and it is difficult when you find yourself wanting to add extras, and therefore additional expense, as you near the big day. Knowing from the start what you have to spend on the day is crucial. Sit down with your partner and decide on a budget, but most importantly, stick to it! Every professional event planner works from a budget so it is important to have the right mindset from the start. Most professional budgets do allow some funds for “extras” or unforeseen expenses that may crop up, so it is a good idea to include some money within the budget for ‘must-haves’ so you have what you desire, without stretching the budget.

Planning your own wedding can sometimes feel overwhelming (not to mention, stressful) so if you follow these expert tips and approach your wedding with the same mindset as an event or wedding planner then you will be off to a flying start and the rest should be plainsailing and hopefully stress free.

Having said that, budgets can be flexible, for example: if you choose a more expensive supplier then you cut back on something else on the list. You can prioritise the more expensive and essential items on your budget, knowing that those have to be paid for, as 50

Our Weddings opposed to “wish list” items that can get cut at any time so as to keep budget intact.

the venue will look like decorated and full of guests!

The aim is to produce a well thought-out and accurate cost plan so that you never exceed the set amount you have budgeted for from the off.

Set up meetings with the venue, assess your timeline and budget and include catch-up meetings to make sure that everything is going to plan.

2. Create a Timeline

4. The Finer Details

Besides the budget, a timeline is the most important part of planning a wedding or indeed any large event. Create a reasonable timeline that fits your planning. Highlight all important dates, such as payments or confirmation to suppliers. Insert dates and reminders for yourself so that won’t forget important items for order or delivery. You can find checklists with timelines online or simply set up an excel spreadsheet so that you can log all the details. Try to stick to these dates and your planning will continue to run smoothly without any nasty surprises.

Once your budget is in place, the guest list is set and the venue has been booked, you can start researching and booking wedding experts to add the decorations and details to the day. Find suppliers that fit with your style and make sure you are comfortable with their contracts and payment requirements. Always ask for references and create a list with contact information that you can share with the venue staff.

5. Manage Your Expectations This is probably the most important thing to come to terms with from the start. No wedding, however well planned by the best wedding planner, will ever come off perfectly. Accept that something will not quite go to plan, so that if and when it does happen you are more than able to turn a blind eye and carry on with the day regardless.

3. Choose the Important Details Once the budget is in place and you are happy with the timeline, it’s important to decide who will be attending. This is key as the size of the wedding will determine what venue you hire as the numbers and hire of the venue will need to fall in line with the budget. Create a realistic guest list and try to stay as close to the numbers as possible.

By using the tips above to start your planning just like a professional, you will have great foundations in place to build your perfect day.

When you know how many people you need to cater for, you can start designing your wedding. Start researching suitable venues that suit the theme of your wedding and can accommodate your numbers. It is advisable to visit the venue to ascertain what they do and do not provide and to meet the team you will be working with. Take time to read the contract in full before signing and once you have booked, talk them through the timeline so that both parties are comfortable with the planning, deadlines and deliveries. A good working relationship with the venue employees` is essential to the wedding day being a success. Ask if you can visit the venue when a wedding is on so you can see what 51

THE CORNBOW FOR CHRISTMAS director of Tansor, the owner of the Cornbow Shopping Centre, said: "This new store will fill an entire side of the ground floor block, some parts of which have been vacant for a while and it will benefit the whole centre with its halo effect. With all the doom and gloom in the news about the fate of the high street against online competition, these latest brands showing their commitment to our town, demonstrate that nothing can truly compete with our real shopping experience especially when it comes to value and the sense of community it brings."

Halesowen has been the only town in the West Midlands to see positive retail growth after the landlord's significant investment resulting in many new lettings including Heron Foods, B&M Bargains and Costa Coffee. The new B&M Bargains store has opened in the Cornbow Shopping Centre in Halesowen. It is the third new retailer joining the centre aspart of a ÂŁ1.2m investment. Situated on the ground floor, at the head of the Cornbow mall, B&M's new 10,000 sq ft replaces New Look and Roman Originals, as well as two units that have been vacant for some time.

A spokesman for the Cornbow Shopping Centre said: "As one of the UK's fastest growing variety and value retailers, B&M Bargains is set to bring top-brands at basement prices to the people of Halesowen which enjoys a catchment of 600,000 within a 30-minute drive time."

After three months of landlord works, B&M opened 21st August 2019. Adrian Oliver, 57

DISCOVER THE WOO WAY PATH TO MINDFULNESS AND MEDITATION A woo way mindset is the ability to just be, go with the flow or get in the zone. It can help to relieve stress and anxiety, and enhance personal magnetism. To help you achieve these enviable states, local mother and daughter team Samantha Gemma and Patsy Parr, have set up www.wooway.co.uk selling beautiful designer crystal and silver jewellery, personalised and handcrafted in the UK to help with mindfulness and meditation.

Our Fashion and saying the mantra does this really quickly. I would often lend my bracelet to passengers who were nervous of flying so they could relax and enjoy the flight.”

“We were inspired by these precious crystals on a spiritual retreat with other Reiki Masters. The colours and lustre of the crystals along with the ancient hidden healing and spiritual meanings are magical. So the woo way collection was born. Sodalite is my favourite; it helps with communication and creativity and can relieve hormone problems and give a sense of balance and calm. I love the blues and indigo hues in the stones," said Samantha.

There are six different bracelets. The sky blue and royal indigo tones found in Sodalite are said to stimulate creativity. The Tiger's Eye, with its deep chocolate and caramel tones, oozes wisdom. Rose Quartz is well known to be calming and represents unconditional love. Nick and Royston's Diary Diary This year has been a year of milestones: we've celebrated Nick`s 60th birthday, Royston Blythe has been trading for 30 years and Nick & Royston have been together for 35 years! Nick`s 60th birthday was always going to be a night to remember! Held at Manchester`s latest adults’ club Whiskey Downs, 100 of Nick`s friends were invited to join them for this special event. The dress code was Leather, Feather, Flesh and Whiplash, so not for the fainthearted! It was embraced by everyone, especially Royston, who dressed as Madam Whiplash! Hosted by the fabulous Globe girls, the evening was an indulgence of risqué performers and entertainment. The camera crew are never very far away these days, and all was captured and featured of the latest series of ‘The Real Housewives of Cheshire’ for all to enjoy!

Darby Wards Engagement Party Joyous news for Darby Ward, when boyfriend Michael Corrado Jackson proposed while they were in the French Rivera. To celebrate this happy occasion, their engagement party was held at the stunning Mottram Hall in Cheshire. 120 guests were invited to a gourmet dinner, where everywhere was decorated in beautiful red roses and their fabulous cake was suspended from the ceiling. The party really started once the live music began and everyone hit the dancefloor! An amazing night and we wish them a lifetime of happiness. Can`t wait for the wedding!

White Party at Menagerie Real Housewife and fashion entrepreneur Seema Malhtra is part owner of Menagerie, one of Manchester`s trendiest hotspots. To celebrate three very successful years, and to thank friends and family, they decided this year`s annual VIP bash would be a White Party. The stage was set for rapper Professor Green, who dazzled the audience, and guests were treated to fabulous food, cocktails and wowed by their resident fire eater. A wonderful night and here`s to next year!

Crème de la Crème 2019 Dawn and Ashley Ward’s Annual Charity Ball held in the grounds of Walford Hall is one of the biggest events in the Cheshire diary. Always a favourite with the Cheshire ‘royalty’ and celebs, this year`s theme was The Greatest Showman. Ultra-glamorous and full of friends, this fabulous party oozes an atmosphere of fun and frolics, with 80s icon Gabrielle bringing the house down! This Annual Charity Ball was originally inspired 10 years ago by Dawn and Ashley`s youngest daughter Aston, who contracted meningitis following a premature birth. Aston opened this year`s event with a heartwarming speech, thanking all the team of professionals who saved her life. It was a great reminder of the importance of raising money for such a worthy cause.

IT MIGHT JUST BE WAX! Often, ear wax is the only reason someone is suffering from hearing loss. This can be removed easily and gently using a choice of methods usually without the need for prolonged treatment with olive oil. remove the wax. This procedure is safe and the client feels relaxed, the results are instant!

What is ear wax? Ear wax is nature’s own way of cleaning the ears. It is produced by cerumen glands in the ear canal. It cleans and lubricates, stopping dirt and debris reaching deep inside the ear. Occasionally, the ear can become blocked, and the wax should then only be removed professionally with care.

Syringing or irrigation This is a more traditional method using water at body temperature that is gently ‘pulsed’ into the canal to remove the wax.

Extraction

Here we use a variety of fine, specially designed tools to safely remove the wax. We are able to see the ear canal through the loupes as we go.

Cleaning your ears There is really no need to try and clean inside the ear and the use of cotton buds should be avoided. Cotton buds will usually make the build-up worse as most of the wax is pushed further into the ear. As the saying goes – you shouldn’t put anything smaller than your elbow in your ear!

Our client experience “Jo explained the procedure clearly and put me at my ease. I didn’t feel rushed and Jo was able to show me the ‘before and after’ results using a camera that put the images of my ears on the big screen! The chair was lovely and comfortable, my hearing was instantly improved! – Jackie”

Olive oil will help to soften the wax and help prepare it for removal but isn’t always necessary.

COUPLE RAISE FUNDS FOR INDIA CHILDREN'S CHARITY essential supplies and medical equipment, and are looking for local businesses who can help with prizes that can be given in their charity raffle, to be drawn around the festive period.

Local couple Dean and Amy Hart, who both work for West Midlands Ambulance Service, and their two children are organising a raffle to raise money for Kailash Satyarthi Children's Foundation in New Delhi, India, which they will give in person when they visit next year.

The foundation was set up by Nobel Peace Prize Winner Kailash Satyarthi, who, along with his NGO organisation has liberated more than 88,000 children in India from child labour, slavery and trafficking. In 1998, Satyarthi conceived and led the Global March against Child Labour, an 80,000 km-long march across 103 countries to put forth a global demand against worst forms of child labour.

This charity is close to their hearts, having previously visited the centre in 2013, and seen their vital work in action. They are visiting the foundation again in April 2020, this time with their young family, and will see the real difference that your contribution can make to the lives of thousands of children who have been rescued from a life of slavery.

More recently, Satyarthi led a nationwide march, Bharat Yatra, in India covering 12,000 miles in 35 days, demanding strong legislation against child rape, child sexual abuse and trafficking.

The foundation works to rehabilitate child labourers who they have rescued from slavery in India. As well as basic needs such as food, clothes and a child friendly environment, The Ashram provides medical care, counselling, education and leadership building skills. This is in order to successfully repatriate the children back into their villages and spread awareness of child slavery, child trafficking and child sexual abuse (hitherto taboo issues in India).

If you are able to donate any prizes, big or small, for this campaign please contact DAH120711@outlook.com Your generous donation will be supporting a life-changing cause.

The Harts are hoping to give a generous donation to the centre in order to buy 68

Fitness is Easy…

It consists of all the little choices we make throughout a day and sometimes it's following these choices that take us off course. • Things such as deciding whether to take the dog for a walk or not! • Take the kids to the park or not! • Go for a pre-dinner walk with your other half or not! • Call up your friend who is on the way to the gym and said they’d call back after, but they don’t SO you end up grabbing a biscuit/crisps and sit and watch TV. By making these small choices it means you’re not moving as much as you could, which makes it feel impossible to lose that extra 2lbs, drop that dress size or run that extra mile. This more often than not will leave you feeling lethargic, weak and constantly tired. So flip it. Do the opposite instead.

Fitness isn’t some crazy lifestyle requiring hundreds of hours in the gym, extreme dieting or the next best treadmill costing thousands of pounds. It is a hundred simple choices a day we have to make anyway. Walk the dog rather than sitting on the coach. Play football with the kids rather than scrolling your screen. Eat an apple rather than a biscuit.

It’s these choices that make fitness easier. Add 2-3 sessions in the gym per week on top of that. Find a personal trainer who will meet you half way and help you become the person you want to rather than sitting watching mindless TV. Fitness is easy. Just move every day until you can’t and if you move more, it is more than likely you will have many more days in your life to enjoy. Want to try something different? Well Christmas is coming and it’s always better to get a head start by starting now! Try us out!

Top Tips for a Happy, Healthy Christmas from Dr Hilary Jones Tip: There are some easy ways to eat healthily over the holidays, for example: choose antioxidant rich dark chocolate over the super sweet liqueur filled selection; seek vitaminrich foods like sweet potato, spinach and broccoli to keep your energy levels up; limit your alcohol intake, and don’t forget to drink plenty of water.

Christmas is notoriously about indulging and ‘getting merry’ with those close to you – but it’s important to take a step back and think about your health, as well as the health of your family and friends, before the festive season commences. We asked Dr Hilary, GP & health broadcaster, to share his top tips…

1. Avoid the temptations

2. Keep an eye on loved ones

Did you know, the average British person consumes 6,000 calories on Christmas day, three times the average daily amount for women?! And let’s not forget the calories of alcohol. Despite its association with merriment, alcohol is actually a depressant – and it lowers your sleep quality. Its weekly recommendation is 14 units a week, which equates to seven 175ml glasses of wine or seven pints of lager, so don’t be afraid to say no to that extra glass of mulled wine!

Christmas is the perfect opportunity to organise a gathering and catch up with friends and family. It also gives you the chance to ensure your relatives, friends and neighbours, who you may not have seen in a while, are healthy and happy. Look out for any changes – for example, feelings of lethargy or weakness may be an indicator of type 2 diabetes; physical unsteadiness may be an indication of osteoporosis; and being asked to repeat what you have said may highlight a hearing problem. So, be alert to even small differences, as latest research shows that hearing loss can increase someone’s chance of developing dementia by 2-5 times if left undiagnosed. Tip: Be attentive to any deterioration in your loved ones’ health - you are much more likely to notice any changes than they are, especially if you haven’t seen them for a while. It might be a good time to gently suggest a health checkup. If you notice your family member or friend is having difficulty following the conversation, suggest they get their hearing checked by 72

Our Health booking in for a free hearing test at their local Hidden Hearing branch by calling 0800 037 2060 or visit www.HiddenHearing.co.uk.

3. Stay physically active A shocking survey by the British Heart Foundation revealed that British people spend an average of 178 hours sitting down over the festive period – make sure you’re not one of them by staying active this Christmas! Tip: Stop thinking about your Christmas checklist and schedule in some quiet time to de-stress, either by reading a book, relaxing in a bubble bath or just by sitting down and watching a movie. It may be a good idea to do your Christmas shopping in advance to avoid the crowds, freeing you up to spend more time relaxing with or without friends and family. If you feel as though stress might be getting on top of you, visit your GP for advice and support.

Tip: Something as simple as a daily walk has been shown to improve your health. A study by the European Society of Cardiology (ESC) Congress found that just 15 minutes of brisk walking a day can add up to seven years to your life, so why start your daily walks before the Christmas season commences? Alternatively, if you want to stay indoors and avoid the cold weather, get in some exercise by playing games with your younger family members, whether that be a kickaround with a football or an exaggerated version of classic charades!

5. Set yourself a New Year’s resolution See the New Year as an opportunity for reevaluating where you are in life, and where you’re headed. Set yourself some goals to make 2019 your happiest and healthiest year yet. New Year resolutions are a great opportunity to infuse your brain with extra motivation, but it’s important not to be too ambitious when setting your resolution – make sure it’s something you really want to achieve. Tip: Take time to really consider areas in life you wish to improve – perhaps you want to start a new fitness regime, get a promotion at work or write a book – create a realistic timeline for yourself to make your goal achievable. This could also be made fun for the whole family, a friendly competition to keep you all motivated. Each member of the family can choose one or multiple goals and together you can check-in regularly on your progress, with rewards being offered at each milestone.

4. Take it easy Try not to stress out too much over fitting in every dinner or party invitation, or the seasonal strain on your finances – you don’t have to say yes to everything. Enjoy the holidays by spending time doing what you want to do rather than constantly catering for the needs of others. A survey of 1,000 Brits revealed that 81% of people find Christmas stressful, so it’s important to switch off and take some time for yourself. 73

SANTAS NEEDED FOR CHARITY’S FESTIVE FUN RUN Laura Nash, events manager at Birmingham St Mary’s Hospice, said: “The Jingle Bell Jog is a fun and lively event that the whole family can get involved in – but we need big-hearted Santas to get involved and support us.

Calling all budding Santas – a local charity is on the lookout for willing Father Christmases to take on its festive fun run this December. The Jingle Bell Jog – which is organised by Birmingham St Mary’s Hospice – will see hundreds of big-hearted Santas run 2.5k and 5k to help raise vital funds for the charity.

“It will cost £24,658 to run our vital services this Christmas Day, so we really do rely on people generously fundraising for us. All sponsorship money raised from this event will allow us to continue to provide free care to patients, their families, carers and loved ones, supporting them to live well with life-limiting illness.”

Over 700 participants are expected to run, jog or walk the festive route, which takes place at Birmingham Moseley Rugby Club on Sunday, 1 December. To help runners get into the festive spirit, the Hospice will be giving everyone who signs up a free Mr or Mrs Claus suit, and will reward them with a medal and tasty mince pie once they cross the finish line.

The Jingle Bell Jog kicks-off the Hospice’s ‘Care at Christmas’ campaign, which is a festive appeal that aims to boost support for the charity leading up to and over the Christmas period. This year, ‘Care at Christmas’ will be extra special as it will help raise much-needed funds during the charity’s 40th anniversary year.

There will also be a festive market for both runners and spectators, which will be selling gifts, crafts and one-of-a-kind stocking fillers, and a chance to say hello to the ‘real’ Santa in his grotto.

Tickets for the Jingle Bell Jog are on sale now and cost £16 for adults, £12 for children and £2 for children under five-years-old. Family tickets cost £45.

Last year, the Jingle Bell Jog raised over £20k for the Hospice, enabling it to continue to care for local people who are living with lifelimiting illness.

Hilary Sims - Life Balance

Is anxiety holding you back? Hilary also helps people dealing with anger, depression, bullying, family breakdown, stress, low self-esteem, bereavement and trauma, listening, offering non-judgmental support and helping clients identify ways of dealing with situations. Therapy sessions take place at her practice or in the home or workplace.

The chances are that while reading this, you are grabbing a few minutes to sit down and take a short break. The pace at which we live our lives is demanding: juggling work, family commitments and a busy diary of events can sometimes feel overwhelming. While we all feel anxious from time to time, anxiety can become excessive and persistent, with its psychological, emotional and physiological symptoms, such as ‘panic attacks’, impacting on our daily lives and those around us.

“A problem shared is indeed a problem halved. I believe we should all take time to focus on ourselves and affirm that we are living our lives in a balanced way. Being self-aware gives us the opportunity to addressing issues before they manifest into something bigger,” she adds.

Hilary Sims, a Registered Member of the British Association of Counselling and Psychotherapy and an Accredited Member of the National Counselling Society, is helping individuals of all ages, couples, families and employees of local businesses talk about anxiety and take positive action through her private practice, ‘Life Balance - Counselling Just For You’, based in Stourbridge.

Hilary is also experienced in working with senior school-aged children and young people, and says children can benefit hugely from talking therapies. “As a mum and through my work in a school environment, I have experienced first hand the pressures of growing up in an image-obsessed society, exam stress, family and relationship issues, social anxiety and fears about their future. Giving children the opportunity to talk about their feelings and helping them develop strategies to manage them doesn’t just benefit them in the short term; it raises self-esteem, instils in them the confidence to ask for help when they need it and the understanding that they can overcome any problems they encounter.”

“I give people a safe, confidential space to focus on themselves, explore the issues causing their anxiety, and regain control of their thoughts and behaviours through cognitive behavioural therapy (CBT), a collaborative intervention which involves talking and doing,” she explains. “We talk about things in the therapy room which are then practised between sessions.”

Hilary offers a free 30-minute introductory consultation. To book or for further information, call 07850 447585 or visit www.lifebalancecounselling.net

The Puppy Diaries

A Christmas special edition where we catch up with Dinky, the Great Dane pup For this edition my Mum, Viki who is Blacks Vets’ Facilities Co- rdinator, has let me take over the article so that I can tell you in my own words about this amazing season called Christmas! There is soooo much to sniff, play with and eat. Did I mention I like to eat? I’m 11 months old now and weigh 68 kg. Hey, I’m a growing boy!

By Dinky AKA ‘Dainoak Dreams of Blue’

The fun all starts on Christmas Eve. I have discovered that the Christmas tree in the corner is actually completely fascinating. Not only am I as tall as it if I stand on my hind legs, it is also covered in interesting things. Twinkly things, things with bells that are great fun to roll around, things that make a lovely noise when you bite into them…. Unfortunately, my mum won’t let me have any of them! She says that tree decorations could shatter and get stuck in my tummy or throat if I try and chew one. Or if I chomp on a nice chewy fairy light, I might even get a nasty electric shock. If an emergency does occur, it’s good to know that I can be treated at the RCVS Accredited Blacks Vets hospital in Dudley. They are equipped to deal with emergency cases 24 hours a day, 365 days a year and are looking after poorly pets all over the festive period. Perhaps I’ll stick to nosing around the bottom of the tree instead. Mmmmmm... there are always delicious smelling things here and they are always hidden away in lovely rustling paper. It’s like a giant game they’ve put there especially for me! I think I can smell chocolate and oh…what’s that? Smells like something with currants and raisins in. Yum! But no, Mum moves that away quickly too as anything made with chocolate, dried fruit such as raisins and currants, or alcohol, is highly toxic to dogs and can cause kidney failure. The last thing Mum needs is a trip to the Blacks Vets emergency surgery on Christmas Eve, so I slope off to partake in my second favourite activity, snoozing by the fire.

Hello everyone! Or if you happen to be fluent in dog language …..woof.. wooof…grrrr! 76

It s Christmas Day and I’m awake early! I can feel that the atmosphere in the house is different. Everyone is very excited and there is lots of activity. I’m not sure what to make of it all as this isn’t like my usual morning routine. As the day progresses, new people start to arrive and I receive lots of attention. There is an awful lot to take in; new sights, smells and different behaviour. I’m feeling a little bit out of my comfort zone and start to pace and have a little cry.

Luckily Mum quickly spots that I’m worried and takes me off to a lovely quiet part of the house, bringing my comfy bed and best cuddle blanket o , oo I settle down to some well-earned fuss and a quick power nap to restore my energy.

After lunch, everyone suddenly seems very tired and the house feels much calmer. Whilst some of the guests relax and watch TV, Dad stretches and announces that he’ll take me for my usual walk. This is music to my ears as although it's cold and getting dark, I love to have a good run and a play with my friends in the park. Just to make sure he doesn’t change his mind, I offer lots of helpful encouragement by pawing and barking so he gets the general idea that it’s time to go out.

At lunchtime my nose starts twitching. What IS that wonderful smell coming from the kitchen? I trot through the house to investigate and am rewarded with the sight of a piping hot, juicy turkey sitting on the side waiting to be carved. As I mentioned earlier, I’m pretty tall when upright, so if I stand in the right position I can... just...lean... forward and... reach... HEYYYYY!! My delicious prize is whisked away at the last minute and I am swiftly ushered out of the kitchen. I sit outside the door, nose and ears twitching, trying to work out what’s going on. Don’t they know how much I like turkey? I can hear Mum telling Dad that they will have to be really careful that I don’t fish the turkey string out of the bin as if swallowed, it can become tangled up and trapped in my digestive system. Eugggh! Doesn’t sound like much fun. But worse than that, it doesn’t sound like I’ll be having any turkey legs to gnaw on as poultry bones easily shatter and can become lodged in my throat. Happily though, I then hear Mum telling Dad that if I’m a good boy, I can have a little turkey meat mixed with my usual kibble.

It’s great to be out, visiting all the familiar places I like to frequent during my walk. I love my routine as it helps me feel safe as well as provides me with an outlet to burn off some energy. If it’s frosty outside, then Dad always checks my paws when we get home to make sure that no grit or salt has become stuck to them. Rock salt, which is commonly used for de-icing pathways and roads, can burn the skin pads on the bottom of my paws so it’s important to wash any traces away as soon as possible with warm water. Once home, with clean paws and a full tummy, it’s time for me to adopt my usual evening position. Stretched out on the rug, snoring gently, I’m enjoying my favourite part of Christmas. Wishing all my friends, both four-legged and two-legged, a very happy and safe Christmas and a happy and healthy new year.

Finally, some good news! Blacks PSP 144mmx106mm TVL_Jun 2019.pdf

What Does Your Christmas Tree Say About You? This year, it’s estimated that about 10.6 million Christmas trees, both farmed and artificial, will be sold in the UK.

Many of the decorations will hold great sentimental value to the owner, evoking memories of family days gone by, and decorating the tree is always an annual family affair, with great value placed on input from family members, both young and old.

Artificial Christmas tree sales hot up on October 30, with sales peaking in the first week of December. Most Christmas trees are up and fully decorated by December 4.

This tree owner loves Christmas tradition and thrives on the chaos associated with the festive season. Christmas allows them to shine as brightly as the star on top of their tree. With their exceptional organisational skills, they produce superb Christmas fare, enough to feed an army, all executed with military precision, of course. Their natural warmth and flair for entertaining comes to the fore at Christmas time.

Robert Dyas has its best selection of Christmas trees this year both in-store and online, including an impressive 7-ft LED pre-lit tree, a variety of ‘real feel’ trees, plus fibre optic wonders. Jodie Harris, known as the Robert Dyas Head Elf, has looked into its best-selling Christmas trees and identified what a person’s Christmas tree says about them. The Head Elf says: “Christmas trees are the focal point of virtually every home. We’ve listened to our shoppers and have noted some frequently recurring traits.”

The Alpinist Christmas is an all-round sensory experience for the sensual ‘alpinist tree’ lover. This snowdusted Christmas creation inspires thoughts of cosy log cabins, snow-covered slopes and the heavenly aroma of pinecones burning on an open fire. Alpinists are excited by the ‘real feel’ technology of this exquisite tree.

The Natural Wholesome Tree Lover With abundant dark green foliage and often decorated in traditional red, green and gold, the ‘natural wholesome Christmas tree’ – like its owner – represents solid family values and the true generous spirit of Christmas. This tree is the heart of the home and is a timeless classic.

The ‘alpinist tree’ owner loves the great outdoors and seeks to recreate their alpine fantasy indoors. They dream of spending the festive season skiing across glistening snowcovered slopes before returning to their luxurious ski chalet with cheeks aglow. Their 80

Our idea of heaven is wearing a chunky jumper and sinking into the sofa whilst sipping on mulled wine and feasting on roasted chestnuts with their loved ones gathered all around.

Festive Season

fantastically coloured tree expresses their blithe spirit. But be warned: do not attempt to offer any décor advice! ‘Party people tree lovers’ are notoriously possessive about their trees and decorating rights are strictly exclusive to the owner. Baubles are always colour coordinated and precision in placement is key to the creation of this masterpiece. White Christmas trees are very much on trend, appealing mostly to a younger generation of Instgrammers and Snapchatters setting up home for the first time.

Minimalist The most understated, yet stunningly stylish tree belongs to the minimalists. Like their owners, their appearance is elegant, streamlined and super-sleek. There is no clutter and chaos associated with the high-gloss experience of a minimalist Christmas. The ‘minimalist tree’ will typically be found in a pristine home environment, such as an uber-cool urban apartment. Christmas is a chic monochromatic affair run with clockwork efficiency and the sheer simplicity is representative of the smooth running and fuss-free existence of the ‘minimalist tree’ lover.

For the Alpinist, Christmas is like living in a winter wonderland Christmas card. It is all about immersing themselves in the pictureperfect magical atmosphere of the season.

Christmas dinner might comprise a sophisticated tray of sushi rather than a traditional Christmas turkey with all its trimmings and paraphernalia. The ‘minimalist Christmas tree’ deliberately lacks any adornment with not a bauble in sight! This tree is all about restraint in design and is perhaps the preferred choice of individuals who work in the fields of architecture or interior design.

Christmas Party People A tall, slim, striking ice-white Christmas tree makes a bold statement. Like their owners, these splendid trees display total design confidence with their ultra-modern take on the festive season. A pure white tree makes for a stunning centrepiece at any Christmas party and these trees are ideally suited to someone who enjoys being the star of the show. Christmas party people are vibrant and fun loving, especially around the festive season and this

This tree is also favoured by people with very little time on their hands to spend decorating and those who might be going away over Christmas but want to demonstrate their Christmas spirit. 81

DUDLEY KINGSWINFORD RFC WORLD CUP EVENT On Friday 30th August 2019, Dudley Kingswinford Rugby Football Club were delighted to host their World Cup Sportsman Lunch, with speeches from former rugby union players David Flatman (Flats), Shane Williams MBE and Tim Stimpson. David Flatman, better known as ‘Flats’, played prop for England eight times between 2000 and 2002 and played for Saracens and Bath during his career. Shane Williams is most famous for his long and successful tenure as a wing for the Ospreys and the Welsh national team, being awarded World Rugby Player of the Year in 2008, as well as the IRB Player of the Year as well. Tim Stimpson is a former rugby union full back who was an integral player for Leicester Tigers between 1998 and 2003, helping them to win the league four times and becoming one of the Premiership’s top point scorers in the process. The afternoon was a fantastic experience for all those who attended, with stories from the boys about some of the highlights of their careers and their thoughts on the 2019 World Cup in Japan. 84

RUGBY’S COMING HOME… TO A SCHOOL, NEAR YOU! Stourbridge Rugby Club has introduced an exciting initiative for the 2019/20 season, organised via the management team at the Club with Chad Thorne, who plays for Stourbridge First XV and works as the Club's communuity manager.

friends at Dudley Kingswinford and Old Halesonians (Level 6); these are sure to be high octane affairs. There are also teams from further afield in National League 2 North (Level 4), which covers from the Midlands right up to Newcastle upon Tyne!

The Club will be inviting every Primary/ Secondary School and College in the area to a home game at Stourton Park via their head teacher, head of physical education and Parents/Teachers Association, ensuring as many establishments take advantage of this opportunity as possible. The invitations will be to watch either the Stourbridge 1st XV or Stourbridge Lions, who are involved in national and local league Rugby.

Stourbridge felt that with 2019 being a Rugby World Cup year, this would be an ideal opportunity to showcase Rugby as the diverse, family-centred, physical game that it is, sharing the unique atmosphere and ethos that Rugby as a game fosters. Stourbridge run a full range of teams, from the ‘Micros and Minis’ starting in their year of their 5th birthday, for both boys and girls, through the age ranges to Colts (Under 18s) and on into Adult Rugby, from semi-professional level, to the social rugby we all enjoy. Stourbridge also have a thriving Girls section. Every player is welcome at the Club, whatever their skill level, experience or ambition. We can help them develop and enjoy this great team sport.

Tickets will be FREE to all children, staff and parents from the schools, with dates allocated throughout the season on predominantly Saturday afternoons, with the occasional Friday Night Lights game as well. The Club has all the facilities you would expect: ample free parking, a BBQ to keep hunger at bay and a bar to serve all beverages both hot and cold, with or without alcohol!

If you’d like more information about match days at Stourbridge Rugby, visit the website at www.stourbridgerugby.com or give the Club office a call on 01384 395000.

Mercedes Benz A220 AMG Line A car with the 3-pointed star on the bonnet has always had a degree of style; it is one of the 3 premium brands out of Germany and Mercedes with the new A-Class has upped the game considerably, writes Bob Hickman.

is a first in a Mercedes with intelligence voice recognition really does move the boundaries. The wonderful 7” infotainment screens are standard, although you can spend a little bit more to increase these to 10” screens.

The new A-Class is wider, longer, and more efficient. It is noticeably longer in length when you park it and I was surprised to find a slight overhang in one of the parking bays that I used.

The driving perspective of looking at the Satellite Navigational system and also the binnacle containing the information that a driver requires is quite outstanding. The overlaid navigational system with real images from the vehicle’s camera takes us into the next stratosphere.

It is packed with technology and the interior is one of the selling points; there is a quality about a Mercedes interior.

I was amazed to see this information and have to question the legality of having a television screen showing you what I was actually seeing in real world time.

The A-Class has standard equipment in abundance, the touch screen interface, which

86

Our Motoring Safety and security include active brake assist, lane keeping assist, speed limit assist and cruise control.

Mercedes has not neglected room within the vehicle. As previously mentioned, it is longer and wider, and this equates to more shoulder, elbow and headroom. The boot has not been overlooked, and it has been slightly increased and more importantly has better, easier access.

The handling of the car was very good without being exceptionally praise worthy, it handled corners, braked without any issues whatsoever. The 2-litre turbo charged engine driving a 7-speed automatic gearbox, was a very pleasant companion.

The test car had a 2-litre engine, producing 190bhp, a 0-60 in just under 7 seconds and a top speed, where legal, of 146mph. The combined fuel consumption figures vary between 41mpg to 37 mpg, so not the most economical vehicle. During my time with the vehicle, I managed to achieve 35mpg. CO2 figure is given as 141kgs.

The car’s torque was enough to move along on a whisper of throttle and the DS DC2 gearbox with its 7-speed always seemed to recognise the correct ratio for the terrain. The A-class as tested with the Premier Plus Pack at £3,500 and the Driver Assist Package made my particular derivative £35,845.

The list of standard equipment is quite high, keyless and stop and go starting function, USB interfaces are contained within a glove box with the 2 USB fittings. The 2-zone automatic air conditioning was an absolute bonus. The navigational system that was incorporated is superb and it includes a 3-year live traffic information.

All Mercedes come with a 3-year standard roadside assistance and Pan European warranty for extra peace of mind.

HOW TO AVOID YOUR YOUTUBE GETTING HACKED? The YouTube hack in September seems to have been caused by an incredibly well coordinated phishing attack via email, but it managed to potentially affect millions of accounts due to human error. The single best way to look after your YouTube account is to read your emails with caution. Opening them won’t cause any harm to your account or system but downloading attachments or clicking on links can lead to serious problems if the sender isn’t who they say they are. You can verify the legitimacy of an email first by looking at the sender’s email address. Typically, a scammer’s domain name will be different from the company they are claiming to be, adding unnecessary letters and numbers or even relying on publicly available addresses from Gmail, Hotmail or Outlook. Next, it’s best to consider what the email is about. Usually, scammers will ask you to take action by filling out an attached form or following a link, which ultimately turns out to be a false login page built to siphon your data. There’s often some urgency baked into it and frequent spelling errors that aren’t found in formal emails. Whether it’s asking you to perform a password reset or something entirely different, I would always recommend manually opening a new tab and navigating to the website directly. It’s highly unlikely that third parties can grab your details if they’re only shared between you and YouTube itself but if you’re determined to rely on the convenience that hyperlinks provide, you can hover over the link to see where it’s truly going to take you. Fortunately, there are several tools directly built into YouTube that can lock down your

account even further. Adding a phone number and/or a secondary email address ensures that you can recover your account in the worst-case scenario. You can protect your account from falling into the wrong hands by activating two-factor authentication (2FA), providing another layer that attackers need to get through in order to gain access. It’s important to stick with a Time-Based One Time Password (TOTP) approach using applications such as Google Authenticator or push-based methods using Google Prompt on mobile phones. SMS verification has numerous problems with it and should adamantly be avoided, as attackers can exploit flaws in the SS7 telephony protocol and use reverse proxy toolkits to intercept verification messages. Accounts are only as strong as the passwords protecting them. It’s important not to settle on something identifiable to you, such as names or birthdays, and make sure not to reuse the same password that’s linked other accounts in your name. Google recommends crafting a password that is at least either characters long, with differently cased letters, numbers, and punctuation to mix things up. To truly shield your YouTube channel, I recommend adopting a password manager. These applications generate and store longer, unique passwords for every account you own and you only have to create and remember a strong master password to protect them. ProPrivacy has even prepared a list of the best free and paid password managers to get the job done. Damien Mason, technology expert at ProPrivacy 90

If it ain’t broke, don’t fix it… Anita Gatehouse Our Lifestyle’s Financial Expert

economy, in political circles and in financial markets, we know certain things work to the benefit of sensible investors.

Jeff Bezos, the well-known founder of Amazon, was recently asked a question about what’s not going to change in the next few years and how that will affect his business. This is an interesting lens through which to view things. He suggests that answering this question is potentially far more important than looking at what is going to change in the future, as it provides a foundation on which to build a robust business strategy. His response was as follows:

Irrespective of what might happen in the future – including any of the potential permutations of Brexit – as investors we can rely on a number of truths:

‘In our retail business, we know that customers want low prices, and I know that's going to be true 10 years from now. They want fast delivery; they want vast selection. It's impossible to imagine a future 10 years from now where a customer comes up and says, “Jeff, I love Amazon; I just wish the prices were a little higher,” [or] “I love Amazon; I just wish you'd deliver a little more slowly.” Impossible.' He then continues: ‘When you have something that you know is true, even over the long term, you can afford to put a lot of energy into it.’

markets work pretty well and are hard to beat, so capturing the market return on offer using lower-cost, well-structured products makes good sense;

spreading our assets broadly to ensure the risks we face are well-diversified will always sit at the core of a successful longterm strategy;

balancing out the risks of equities by owning high quality bonds provides a good insurance policy.

Bond holdings diversified across a number of different global bond markets, mitigates the risk of a rise in UK yields (and thus falling prices), as the cost of borrowing in other markets may not be impacted in the same way, at the same time.

Bezos is right. His wisdom applies not only to Amazon but also many other spheres, not least investing. Despite the lack of clarity about what might happen in the global

allocation differences compared to the world as a whole; in particular it has no major technology companies like Microsoft, Amazon and Google, despite technology stocks representing around 15% of global equity markets. UK exposure to technology stocks is less than 3%. It also has material overweights to the energy and basic material sectors.

If it ain’t broke, don’t fix it. Our portfolios are as well positioned as they can be for whatever lies ahead.

Diversifying on a global basis ensures that the impact of adverse movements in the UK equity market are reduced.

Owning high-quality, shorter-dated global bonds provides strong diversification High - quality bonds act as a strong insurance policy against falls in equity markets. Avoiding over-exposure to lower quality (e.g. high yield, sub-investment grade) bonds makes sense as they tend to act more like equities at times of economic and equity market crisis.

being patient (living through the short-term dips) and being disciplined (maintaining your strategy over time) are fundamental to achieving the returns you need to fulfil your financial goals.

At this point – given the short-term uncertainty, and possible anxiety, over Brexit – let’s focus in on diversification.

The information in this article does not constitute investment advice; you must not rely on the content when making investment decisions without taking advice. Past performance is not a reliable indicator of future results. The value investments and the income from them, may fall or rise and investors may get back less than they invested.

Remaining broadly diversified protects us from specific unfavourable outcomes There are many ways in which an investor can be diversified, from individual securities to sectors, countries, investment styles and asset classes. Owning a portfolio that includes many thousands of companies, all market sectors, spread across developed and emerging economies, reduces the risk of being caught out by material negative impacts in specific markets, such as the UK.

Landmark case rules in favour of Black Country law firm client was one of those rare cases where all the evidence points to the deceased materially misunderstanding the nature and extent of her estate, and the misconceived idea three of her children had received significant lifetime gifts.

After a three year dispute, a landmark judgement has been made in favour of a client represented by leading Black Country law firm, Talbots. Since 2016, a Norton Canes family has been at war over an estate valued at approximately £1m. The dispute? Whether a mother’s new will, made in 2011, invalidated one made a year earlier. Rather than one child as the main beneficiary, the new will shared Beryl Parsonage’s estate equally amongst each of her four children.

“This was an extremely demanding dispute with emotions running high and a complex legal argument to be explored,” states Jagdip Bains, Head of Dispute Resolution at Talbots Law, who led on the case. “I have been working with Ian and his wife from the outset and with the support of Counsel, Claire van Overdijk, and my team, we provided a compelling reason why the ‘second will’ was valid and why the estate should be split equally between the four children.”

Aside from the personal impact, what marks this exceptional case out is the judgement was made in the High Court, meaning it will guide future cases for many years to come. Talbots’ client - Ian Parsonage - had argued his mother’s ‘second will’ should be observed, something his younger brother disputed. Duncan Parsonage - the main beneficiary of the ‘first will’ - battled for that to be upheld due to his mother’s dementia meaning he would be gifted a property (valued up to £290,000 whilst his son would have an equal share of the residue estate (worth a minimum of £200,000).

She continued: “We are delighted the judge found in Ian’s favour and hope that this verdict will give him some comfort in that his mother’s dying wishes have been respected. “After a really tough three years we have got the right verdict and the one our mother would have wanted,” Ian Parsonage confirmed. “Jagdip and Talbots have been great throughout what has been a very difficult process and have played a major role in us arriving at the right outcome.”

After six days at the High Court of Justice at the Birmingham District Registry, the dispute was settled in Ian’s favour. His Honour Judge Baker QC stated that his mother’s dementia did not adversely affect her capacity when executing the ‘second will.’ The judge further ruled that the ‘first will’ was invalid - it
