- Cousins are Expanding

We’re excited to announce that we’ve acquired the prestigious 80,000 sqft Shrewsbury store of Alan Ward Furniture, Shropshire’s undoubted number one shopping destination for furniture. We’ve also taken over their reputable store in Newcastle-under-Lyme. Both will be completely refurbished and rebranded to Cousins, making us the largest family-run furniture retailer in the Midlands. Cousins’ expansion is fantastic news for Shropshire. Encouraged and grateful for such buoyant sales since lockdown, it comes at a time when there’s been so much bad news. Cousins will begin with a massive Liquidation Sale in both Shrewsbury and Newcastle to clear Alan Ward’s remaining stock, now on. 5

KEEP IT COSY

AUTUMNAL LIGHTING BY HUDSON VALLEY LIGHTING GROUP Create an Interior that Induces Calm and Warmth on Those Cooler Autumn Nights As long summer nights begin to take an Autumnal twist and turn to cooler and darker nights, we can welcome the change by creating a cosy and warm interior. One of the best ways to achieve this is with the use of clever lighting, let Hudson Valley Lighting Group (HVLG) guide you with its tips for choosing lighting that is right for you and your home this fall season.

known as ambient lighting, and find yourself a big, beautiful chandelier or pendant that makes its presence known. Then add in some task lighting that will be useful in illuminating focussed tasks like reading or working at a desk. To add the finishing touches to the room, do not forget about accent lighting. This could be anything from wall lights to track lamps and can draw attention to certain features in a room.

HVLG have a stunning range of lighting fixtures that are perfect for Autumn, evoking a sense of warmth and cosiness, without feeling dark and dreary. The brand’s pieces provide captivating focal points to any room, and while the seasons change, HVLG’s fixtures are timeless, adapting with ease to any time of year. Let HVLG inspire you with its top picks and tips for lighting fixtures this autumn.

A DIMMER IS A WINNER Installing a dimmer switch on your focal lighting a crucial if you want to have the flexibility to adjust the brightness on your lighting depending on your mood or the time of day. Some people find having bright lights on in the evening unsettling, so it is ideal to be able to dim the lights to create a more relaxed and softer ambience when you are winding down for the night.

To create a cosy atmosphere with appropriate lighting, there are a few key components you need to consider. These include:

GO EASY ON THE CEILING LIGHTS

GET A FEEL FOR FUNCTION

To create a warm, homily feeling, a series of elegant pendants over a kitchen island or an elegant chandelier placed over a dining table are perfect choices. The same applies for living rooms or bedrooms, with the addition of some side lamps to complete the mood. Downlights or spotlights are bright and glaring, so are best kept just for the kitchen or bathroom where task lighting is needed, otherwise you risk creating an ambience that is more suited to work than home.

Depending on how you plan to use the room, you may want different types of lighting. For example, in the kitchen you may want additional task lighting to brighten up areas like worktops for preparing food, to ensure you can focus better.

LESS IS NOT ALWAYS MORE A great way to create a comfortable and inviting setting is to layer your lighting with a minimum of three or four light sources per room. Start with your main lighting fixture, 8

Our Home CONCENTRATE ON CORNERS

CHLOE SCONCE

Similar to layering, to add interest and allure, you want to have focussed corners of the room with different lighting. This could be lamps on side tables, sideboards, and shelves, making the room more exciting and multidimensional. Sidelights can also be used to illuminate art pieces and create a trendy display.

The Chloe sconce from Mitzi looks stunning in any interior, the marble effect base fitted with adds a touch of glamour whilst the modern bulb achieves a contemporary feel.

ASTRID CHANDELIER Paired best with modern furnishings in neutral tones, the playful Astrid chandelier from Mitzi by Hudson Valley Lighting brand sets the mood for a balanced and soothing room with its aged brass and black finish. The aged brass perfectly complements the black by adding a pop of colour that is classy and stylish, while still helping to capture a warm, autumnal feel in a room.

LED IS THE WAY FORWARD Lasting 20 times longer than incandescent bulbs and around 8 times longer than halogen, most standard LED lights boast a 10-15 year lifespan. Not only this but they are more environmentally friendly, consuming up to 85% less energy and producing less heat, which also results in reduced electricity bills. LEDs come on instantly with no frustrating flickering and are now available in a wide range of attractive tones and hues.

PILSEN CHANDELIER With such striking features, Pilsen, from Troy Lighting, adds a stunning focal point to any room. Cradling crackling bulbs in a candelabrashaped based, Pilsen’s perforated steel plates finished in brass naturally contrast against a rich, dark bronze. Further perforations and tactile details define Pilsen’s elegant shape while smooth curves and hard edges blend seamlessly to accentuate the piece’s distinguishable style. Finished in a gorgeous carbide black with satin nickel accents.

ADD A CLASSIC TOUCH WITH A CANDLE Some may underestimate the power of candlelight to encourage a warm and inviting feel in a room, especially when it’s cold and dark outside. To really pull out all the stops you can invest in some scented candles in your favourite aromas to make your interior something truly special.

ODYSSEY COLLECTION

Now you know a bit more about lighting, indulge in our top picks for autumnal lighting by HVLG, hand-picked just for you:

This beautiful collection by Troy Lighting features chrome lantern-style glass lamps that add a subtle, calming glow to any room, perfect for unwinding on darker Autumnal nights. Featuring contemporary defined lines that is reminiscent of HVLG’s signature style, with a sophisticated carbide black and polished nickel finish. The Odyssey Collection has a style to suit any space in the house; the range includes a chandelier, pendant and wall sconce.

GINA SCONCE Gina plays with the idea of mounting a handheld lantern on the wall, its hoop fitting snugly in the top mount and its timeless sphere diffuser clicking into place on the other mount. The dark fabric-wrapped cord plugs into a wall outlet, making Gina an easy way to add instant chic to a temporary space. 11

YOUR GUIDE TO WINDOW BUYING IN WORCESTERSHIRE Choosing the perfect new windows for your home should be an enjoyable experience (well, that’s 5 Star’s aim). Your new windows need to add value to your home while keeping you and your family safe, warm and comfortable all year round. Our designers (who you can meet in our showrooms in Kidderminster or Worcester, or in your home) can help you choose the right windows for your home and show you them virtually in situ prior to ordering. If you’re popping in, please bring a few photographs of your home for the designers to work with.

is important to you. •

WHAT TO LOOK FOR IN A NEW WINDOW You don’t choose new windows every day, so be safe and get our designers to help you – their support is FREE and unlike conventional double glazing salespeople, they don’t hassle you. Our designers will just give you all the options available so you can make an informed decision as to which products best suit your home. IT’S UP TO YOU WHAT AND WHEN TO BUY.

WINDOW DESIGN •

Most customers originally plan to replace their existing windows like-for-like, not realising that when replacing they can choose almost any new configuration, colour or style. They can add or reduce the number of openings and change the position of the openers. The stipulation for most homeowners is that liveable rooms must have fire escape hinges fitted to at least one opening. There may be an option which suits your property better than your original windows. It’s 5 Star’s job to help you choose it.

Once you’ve selected your window style, you can complement the look by choosing a bespoke colour, decorative glass, Georgian bars and your own choice of window handle and door furniture.

Windows look most symmetrical when matched in pairs or rows, so do consider your sightlines when choosing, if balance

Windows in a conservatory are just as personal, so take all the above into consideration when choosing these too.

To start, forget what you already have, we can fit any style in any colour, with as many or as few openers as you need. We have a massive choice of window styles to suit your home, in almost any colour, aluminium or uPVC, double or triple glazed. There are even a variety of glass choice options…in fact there’s so much for us to help you with. Why not start your journey with a visit to one of our Worcestershire SHOWROOMS?

CAN WE OFFER YOU A FREE QUOTATION? We promise not to get too technical, but to help you make the right decisions for a window system you will love which achieves the right combination for you. It’s our job to help you understand everything you need to know about windows but not confuse or complicate your buying journey.

LET IT SHINE! Lighting designer Nicky Schellander explains why lighting can transform your home A good lighting scheme has the ability to completely transform a space, yet when creating an interior design framework, it is often considered more of an afterthought rather than a priority when homeowners begin the process of redecorating their home.

Ambient lighting, which encompasses everything from wall lamps to chandeliers, illuminates the home, creates warmth, makes a room feel less cramped and even have a positive psychosocial impact on mood and mental health.

However, its forgotten importance is something of a disappointment to glassware design and lighting expert Nicola Schellander, who believes that homeowners often fail to give lighting the attention that it deserves.

Such lighting is crucial to a home’s interior because it nullifies the risk of creating gloomy or unattractive spaces, which may cause family members or visitors to avoid these areas whilst also making a room feel claustrophobic or cramped.

“This is down to a number of reasons,” said Nicola. “Although varied in style, I feel the marketplace has not opened up to maximising the use or exploration of different materials. Price too can be an issue. Often British customers, in particular, may feel that their budgets are better spent on items of furniture leaving lighting at the bottom of the list. In time however I am hoping this will change.”

Task lighting on the other hand supports homeowners when performing specific tasks such as reading, working, or even taking a shower without being subject to eye-strain – ultimately helping getting the job done. Understanding where light in the room would be best used is crucial when planning and designing a fresh new look for the interior of a home. Task lighting can also be used in rooms that may already have ambient light.

Whilst understated, indoor lighting not only has impact, but has the potential to transform a house into a home but equally can make or break an interior scheme, without first careful consideration of their importance to the aesthetics and functionality of living spaces.

The third basic type of lighting, Accent, is for those who wish to add character to specific areas in order to draw attention towards something that the homeowner may wish to stand out.

In the absence of good lighting the influence of other well-thought out details – whether they be the grand furnishings or luxurious wall coverings – may be rendered useless and their impact lost altogether.

Compared to Ambient and Task lighting, Accent is purely aesthetic and is primarily used to highlight areas to accentuate image and style. Their use can range from heightening the ambience of specific areas within the home such as artwork, photographs or even within a trophy cabinet.

There are three types of lighting that have a particular function to fulfil specific needs and these include: Ambient, Task and Accent Lighting. 22

Our Home From furniture to flooring and finishes to fitting, lighting plays an integral role in achieving the perfect equilibrium between style, comfort and creating a stunning, yet functional interior. Nicola, who has worked with retail brands such as John Lewis, Harrods and Laura Ashley during her 20-year glittering career and now has her own studio where she manufactures her unique designs, commented: “When designing your home lighting can often be unintentionally overlooked as people fail to release that light is perhaps one of the most important element in a home’s interior. “Whilst on the surface lighting may not seem a key aspect in your home, its importance is hugely understated. Lighting plays with our perceptions, creates new and exciting sensations and can completely reinvent a design. Essentially it can change the mood of a room qualifying it as a one of the most crucial elements in the design process. “Lighting can add colour, make a bold statement within a minimalistic design or add an element of individuality. It should be considered as an integral part of a room’s design and not just for functional purposes. It should complement your lifestyle and complement the atmosphere you wish to create and the decorative elements you wish to emphasise. “In my own work I always try to look for projects that push creative boundaries using materials and design to create a unique and overall visual appeal. “The process of building an idyllic home requires numerous elements that are harmoniously brought together. Lighting should be as high on the list as flooring and wall colours yet is so often forgotten. It is the ultimate accessory which has the power to change the face of a room and create the ambience desired.” 23

‘All aboard the Crystal Serenity’ by Rebecca Underwood, Travel Journalist For those with a burning desire to escape the constant pressures of a demanding lifestyle, a luxurious ocean voyage onboard the Crystal Serenity offers the opportunity to relax and rejuvenate.

Boarding procedures are swift and efficient and we were promptly escorted to our stylish Seabreeze Penthouse. Features include a spacious living area and a private veranda with comfortable seating, which is the ideal spot for an afternoon snooze in the sunshine and a pre dining tipple and a nibble on a tasty canape or two whilst admiring the ocean view. The walk-in closets easily accommodated the contents of our bulging suitcases and the spa-like bathroom includes a first class shower with body jets, twin basins, and ample storage for all those essentials. Furnishings include a plump and comfortable sofa and a separate arm chair, luxuriously soft carpeting and ultra comfortable beds swathed in crisp, white linens ensuring a deep slumber. The overall contemporary design and décor instils the ambiance of a tranquil sanctuary and is further enhanced by 'mood' lighting.

Recipient of the Condé Nast Traveller’s Readers Choice Award for ‘World’s Best Cruise Ship’ for 25 years and winner of the ‘World’s Best’ by Travel and Leisure readers for 23 years, Crystal Cruises provides the highest levels of comfort and service and with a maximum of 980 passengers aboard the Crystal Serenity and a staff to guest ratio of 1.5, Crystal Cruises’ acclaimed six star service is guaranteed. My mother and I embarked on the sleek lined Crystal Serenity, sailing from Venice to Barcelona for the 12 night ‘Beyond the Pillars of Hercules’ voyage visiting Dubrovnik, Kotor, Corfu, Gallipoli, Taormina/Giardini, Sorrento, Rome and Monte Carlo. Formally named by Dame Julie Andrews in Southampton on 03 July 2003, the Crystal Serenity underwent extensive refurbishments in 2018 and now offers new dining options, including open seating, redesigned lounge and entertainment venues and accommodations including the fabulous Crystal Penthouses, which measure 1,368 sq ft and feature sweeping teak verandas and spectacular bathrooms with Jacuzzis, Penthouse Suites, which measure 549 sq ft, also with verandas, and Deluxe Staterooms, which cover 213 sq ft.

Our Travel In a short while there was a polite tap on the door and we were thrilled to meet our charming butler, Damian, who swiftly demonstrated the latest technology accessible through our ultra thin 43'' HD television allowing us to view onboard folios including the Crystal Life Spa and Salon services, daily restaurant menus, the Connoisseur Wine menu, a wide choice of complimentary music, movies and television programmes and information related to our cruise. Butler services include unpacking and packing, shoeshine service, dinner and shore excursion reservations, Spa appointments and arranging cocktail parties. In- room amenities include a set menu of complimentary wines and spirits, a well stocked fridge with a selection of soft drinks, which are replenished daily, and a Krupp machine with Julius Meinl espresso capsules. We were then introduced to Feli our delightful penthouse attendant who presented us with a pillow menu featuring goose down, Hypoallergenic and therapeutic options and whilst our butler popped the cork on a chilled bottle of 2015 Charles Heidsieck we relaxed on our veranda. Later we embarked on a leisurely stroll around the ship. The vessel’s length of 250 metres, width of 32.2 metres and 13 decks (9 accessible to passengers) ensures that there is much to explore.

venue, where live entertainment includes jazz trios, sopranos and more. We were just in time for afternoon tea and immediately succumbed to the temptations including dainty little sandwiches, scones oozing with fresh cream and fruity jams and pastries galore. Sipping on our piping hot tea, whilst being serenaded by the soothing strains of a talented violinist, we met some of our fellow passengers and the discussions soon centred on entertainment and how to choose which shows, seminars and lectures to attend, and how to fit in all the activities including Mah Jongg, Bridge, fitness classes, putting green, shuffleboard courts, table tennis, golf driving nets and movies shown three times daily in the Hollywood Theatre. Taking along our copy of Reflections (the ship's daily magazine with information on everything) and our shore excursions menu we made haste for the Lido deck, awash with comfortable sun loungers, parasols, couches and enormous sun chairs with huge cushions. A quick refreshing dip in the Seahorse swimming pool, followed by a long spell in one of the bubbling Jacuzzis and then a spot of pampering in the Crystal Salon and Spa was just the ticket. Treatments focus on hair, face, body and even teeth, manicures and pedicures along with massages, detox treatments and holistic well-being. After quite some deliberation I opted for the 75 minute ELEMIS Aroma Spa Seaweed full body massage, which was simply sublime.

As we wandered around we came upon the elegant Palm Court, the ship's main social

Our Travel For pre dining cocktails, we went to the Crystal Cove, which offers a variety of live musical styles including Richard Pucci who tickles the ivories to an appreciative crowd. Inevitably, we were running late and made our way to the Waterside restaurant, the main dining room, which offers open seating and an absolutely first rate service. I selected the delicious wild mushroom wellington with creamed spinach and roasted purple potatoes and accompanied by the 1989 Chateau Lafite -Rothschild, the flavours were enhanced to another level. The conversations with our fellow diners focused on who had secured reservations for the three speciality restaurants and we were in a dilemma as to whether to dine next at the excellent Chinese venue, Silk, which serves a highly praised

Kung Po Chicken or Prego, which presents Italian cuisine and, we were reliably informed, the roasted rack of baby lamb with black olive marmalade is perfect with a bottle of Ornellaia 2015 or perhaps Umi Uma where master chef Nobuyuki Matsuhisa's celebrated 'Nobu' style lobster with truffle - yazu sauce is served and just has to be accompanied by the Sauvignon Blanc 'Asatsuyu' 2017 and of course the Sushi Bar is not to be missed. We plumped for Churrascaria, the Brazilian steakhouse, with Caipirinhas, tapas and Ceviches on the menu and diners wait in anticipation for the moment when the skilled servers parade through the restaurant with grilled meats held aloft on sword-like skewers, taken directly from the grill, and stop at each table to carve slices.

The Seahorse Pool Pods And for a more intimate dining experience, the Vintage Room, a unique concept, promotes wine appreciation. The beautifully furnished venue seats a minimum of ten diners for optional dinners featuring vintage wines and champagnes paired with extravagant dishes. I was fortunate to sample a selection of outstanding pairings including the Moet et Chandon, Cuvee Dom Perignon, Brut, Epernay 2009, served with poached lobster tail, Pierre Robert, Fresh Plums and Summer Truffle. For those keen to find a quiet spot, to sink into a comfortable leather armchair and partake in port wines, cognacs and single malt whiskeys and a fine international cigar, the Connoisseur Club is the spot.

including extravagant shows and we were fortunate to see a Broadway Review Production with excerpts from musicals including Rent, the Tony winner for the Best Musical, the wonderful West Side Story and the hilarious musical Something Rotten. Another highlight was the exceptional performance given by musician and comedian Jon Courtenay who was richly rewarded with rapturous applause and standing ovations. After the show we took the opportunity to show off our nifty footwork on the dance floor at the Stardust Club, which also presents intimate performances, recitals and special lectures. And for those keen to disco dance into the early hours, the intimate lounge Pulse is buzzing, and it's also the place to be for Karaoke fans. One of the more tuneful passengers dedicated his song to the Crystal Serenity and the audience held there glasses aloft and sang along heartily to the Christopher Cross hit ............'Well, it's not far down to paradise, at least it's not for me. And if the wind is right you can sail away and find tranquility. Oh, the canvas can do miracles, just you wait and see. Believe me. Sailing takes me away to where I've always heard it could be. Just a dream and the wind to carry me. And soon I will be free.'

Venues for post dining tipples are aplenty and we enjoyed the relaxing Avenue Saloon where dark rich woods and comfortable furnishings create the intimacy of a piano bar. We also frequented the luxurious Galaxy Lounge, which presents a variety of entertainment

Using the BOA device can intensify the effects for weight reduction such as detoxifying diets and can help to prevent the development of Cellulite. It achieves this by reducing inflammation, and the build-up of fluids often referred to as water retention.

Lymphatic Drainage (Boost your Immune system) Weight Loss Sports Massage Sports Injury Fluid Retention (Oedema) Poor Circulation Reduces Inflammation Removes toxins & Cellulite

Sports massage To enjoy better health and performance, an athlete needs to recover following rigorous exercise. Without a sports massage, the body would need up to five days to fully recover due to the natural limitations of the human body.

Massage Without Human Contact The BOA 2 Max is a medical computercontrolled massage suit that takes away the need for human to human contact reducing the risk of catching COVID 19. The treatments are in a clinic setting exercising full infection control cleaning protocols.

Sports Massage can help to hasten the body's natural systems accelerating recovery. The procedure helps the body's lymphatic system to quickly remove waste while increasing blood circulation assisting in the natural repair of muscles.

The device is the only one in the world to use the Lymphatic drainage technique invented by Dutch physician Emil Vodder consisting of sequential compressions (following blood and lymph circulation physiology) of selected body parts: the limbs, abdomen, and buttocks.

Sports Injury Massage helps to increase the circulation of blood, reduce inflammation and aids in the removal of waste. Allowing the body to heal the damaged tissue faster.

Lymphatic Drainage

Fluid Retention (Oedema)

Lymphatic drainage is a therapeutic massage technique that will encourage the natural drainage of waste products via the lymph glands. The massage uses very light pressure and long, gentle, rhythmic strokes to naturally assist the lymph system in reducing the toxins in your body. The lymph system is an essential

Swelling in the ankles, feet and legs is often caused by a build-up of fluid, called oedema. The fluid build-up is usually caused by standing or sitting in the same position for too long. Being overweight, along with certain medications like blood pressure tablets and 30

the contraceptive pill can also cause fluid retention. However, it may be an indication of a more severe issue such as heart, liver or kidney problems so you should always consult your doctor.

Inflammation Inflammation is the body's natural immune system response when it is trying to fight against things that may harm it, such as infections, injuries and toxins. The immune system releases chemicals like antibodies, proteins and increases blood flow in an attempt to repair the damaged cells; this often results in inflammation. In normal circumstances, this inflammation lasts a few hours. However, if the immune response lingers, this may cause chronic inflammation which if left untreated can harm your muscles and organs.

The BOA massage therapy stimulates the body to help remove the excess fluid and waste products via the lymphatic system. Also, your muscles feel refreshed due to an increase in blood circulation aiding repair and restoration.

Poor Circulation If you are experiencing cold hands, feet arms or legs, you may be suffering from poor circulation. The body's circulation system sends blood containing oxygen and nutrients to your whole body, thus ensuring it functions correctly. You should always consult your doctor as poor circulation can be an indication of more severe issues such as diabetes and heart conditions.

The BOA treatment helps to restore the body's natural balance, releasing tension and allowing blood oxygen and nutrients to flow freely. Treatments last between 30 - 45 minutes.

Is anxiety holding you back?

Hilary Sims - Life Balance

Hilary also helps people dealing with anger, depression, bullying, family breakdown, stress, low self-esteem, bereavement and trauma, listening, offering non-judgmental support and helping clients identify ways of dealing with situations. Therapy sessions take place at her practice or in the home or workplace.

The chances are that while reading this, you are grabbing a few minutes to sit down and take a short break. The pace at which we live our lives is demanding: juggling work, family commitments and a busy diary of events can sometimes feel overwhelming. While we all feel anxious from time to time, anxiety can become excessive and persistent, with its psychological, emotional and physiological symptoms, such as ‘panic attacks’, impacting on our daily lives and those around us.

“A problem shared is indeed a problem halved. I believe we should all take time to focus on ourselves and affirm that we are living our lives in a balanced way. Being self-aware gives us the opportunity to addressing issues before they manifest into something bigger,” she adds.

Hilary Sims, a Registered Member of the British Association of Counselling and Psychotherapy and an Accredited Member of the National Counselling Society, is helping individuals of all ages, couples, families and employees of local businesses talk about anxiety and take positive action through her private practice, ‘Life Balance - Counselling Just For You’, based in Stourbridge.

Hilary is also experienced in working with senior school-aged children and young people, and says children can benefit hugely from talking therapies. “As a mum and through my work in a school environment, I have experienced first hand the pressures of growing up in an image-obsessed society, exam stress, family and relationship issues, social anxiety and fears about their future. Giving children the opportunity to talk about their feelings and helping them develop strategies to manage them doesn’t just benefit them in the short term; it raises self-esteem, instils in them the confidence to ask for help when they need it and the understanding that they can overcome any problems they encounter.”

“I give people a safe, confidential space to focus on themselves, explore the issues causing their anxiety, and regain control of their thoughts and behaviours through cognitive behavioural therapy (CBT), a collaborative intervention which involves talking and doing,” she explains. “We talk about things in the therapy room which are then practised between sessions.”

Hilary offers a free 30-minute introductory consultation. To book or for further information, call 07850 447585 or visit www.lifebalancecounselling.net

Our Jobs

Why I Love My Job Sara McMaster- Esteem them the feel good factor. I see my role as a clinic owner not only to advise on treatments but to get to know my clients personally in the hope that they feel they have been listened to. Lots of ladies and gentlemen have confidence issues. I’m an advisor with regard to treatments yes, however I listen to people’s issues and problems and sometimes it runs deeper than just the way they look. Stress has a big part to play in the way we feel and look facially. When a person looks in the mirror, and the reflection is tired eyes, drawn, dull looking skin then that is where we can help. However I like the fact that I can listen to people’s problems and hopefully lend a sympathetic ear.

My name is Sara McMaster and I am the Director/owner of Esteem Cosmetic Clinic. I am a wife, a mother of three children and a nanny to two grandchildren. I started my business at the age of 46. Some people may say that’s late but it really was the best thing for me after gaining confidence through my career. I decided to open an aesthetics clinic because having worked for a large, well known Cosmetic surgery company, I found that the pace was very fast there with the added stress of sales figures monthly. I felt I couldn’t spend the time I wanted to with my clients so I took the chance and decided to go it alone. I wanted to create a warm, ambient, professional clinic where I could build relationships with my clients, take the time to listen to them.

I love creating long lasting relationships with my clients and watching their journey from start to finish. I am proud of my beautiful clinic which has recently expanded and been refurbished. It is very professional offering advanced aesthetic and beauty treatments performed by highly advanced practitioners.

Aesthetics and beauty are not just about cosmetic procedures they are about so much more. People have these treatments to improve self esteem, confidence and to give 38

Our Jobs My daughter Chloe McMaster runs the beauty side of the business. It is lovely to think that she has been able to take this journey with me and she has been able to grow and qualify in so many advanced treatments since we started the business. I have watched her grow in confidence and expertise since the age of 19. She is now 26 and I am so proud of her. I’m hoping in years to come she will take over the business. We make a brilliant team. Esteem to me was a dream. If you manifest your dreams they certainly will come true. My dream did and now I run a professional, beautiful clinic to be proud of. Come and take a look for yourself. We offer free consultations for all your anti aging, facial and body concerns. We now also work alongside cosmetic surgeons. Call us today on tel: 01384 444261. Our Showbiz News

Nick and Royston's Diary National Hair Sunday During the months of lockdown, Nick & Royston reflected on the hard work and dedication of the frontline National Health workers and how they could thank them. With over a million NHS workers, they needed to do something big and National Hair Sunday was born. They used all their contacts in the media, the Hairdressing industry and on social media asking ALL hairdressers nationally to commit to a day of free hairdressing. The response was massive from individual salons to national companies, like Toni & Guy, Rush and Francesco Group all signing up. All the team gave up their day off and worked from 8.00 am- 7.00 pm to offer as many appointments as possible. It was a great day and a great opportunity to say Thank You.

Yachting to the Isle of Wight With many great friends in the hairdressing industry, Guy Kremer is one of their dearest. With the circumstances over the past few months, they needed no excuse to have a catch up. With Guy`s salon based in Winchester, he suggested joining friends and sailing on his yacht around the Isle of Wight. They set off from Lymington, with a delicious lunch including lobster and Champagne. Then set sail to the needles and then around the island, before returning back later in the afternoon. A beautiful day, with stunning scenery, great fun and loads of laughter. Cannot wait to do it again.

Rebecca Ferguson’s Birthday Party After many months away, the guys were back in Alderley Edge filming for the next series of The Real Housewives. After a busy day filming, they enjoyed dinner at Piccolino`s and then joined friends to celebrate The X Factor Star Rebecca Ferguson`s Birthday. The party was held at the Parea in Alderley Edge, where Cheshire`s royalty was out in force. The owners of Fashion House Lavish Alice, Lee & Matthew joined Dawn Ward and many friends to celebrate Rebecca`s special day. It was a great opportunity to catch up, party with old friends and make some new ones.

London after lockdown To celebrate life after lockdown, Nick & Royston joined friends Fashion Designer Julien MacDonald, Wes & Pete to the new exclusive restaurant Amazonico Mayfair. This fabulous Brazilian restaurant was created to take guests on a sensory journey inspired by the Amazon River and Latin America. The menu combines Asian and Mediterranean influences with nighty performances of Latin inspired jazz. After an amazing dinner, the evening continued on to the World`s most famous night club Annabel`s. Where drinks flowed in the Jungle Bar and dancing in this subterranean paradise. A fabulous evening to celebrate life, after such dark days.

WEDDINGS ON A BUDGET These days weddings can be very expensive. According to Brides Magazine the average wedding comes in at £22K. That’s a sizable amount of money that, let’s be honest, can be put towards something less frivolous such as a deposit for a home or a car to get you to work and back. Yet couples up and down the country are spending their hard earned cash (and in some cases even borrowing money) to have their dream wedding.

budget required for the big bash or even those couples that feel the money is best spent elsewhere, there are ways to arrange an equally special day at a fraction of the cost.

Keep it in the Family There are two key factors to arranging as low budget wedding. The first is to ask for help from your friends and family. Explain that you are doing things differently and ask if they would consider helping you arrange the day. In most cases people will be only too happy to help and often you will find that people offer to do things for you (such as make your wedding cake) as their gift to you. The second factor is that you need to manage your expectations of the day itself. You may need to forgo certain wedding traditions and be a little creative with your planning. Canapés and a traditional three course wedding breakfasts for 100 guests with set you back in the region

But putting the roses and confetti aside, take a moment to consider just what’s most important on your wedding day. Having your family and friends around you to witness the love that you declare for your betrothed has surely got to be top of the list right? So do we really need fireworks, red carpets and hand carved ice sculptures? In this day and age anything goes and for those couples that are falling short of the 42

Our Wedding of £6K so you will need to accept that on a low budget, elements of the wedding will be different. But different can be fun!

second had shops for vintage crockery and add teapots full of flowers and teacups full of rose petals to the table design.

First you need to actually get married so you will need to factor in the cost of the church or registry office. The latter, in most cases, will be cheaper. Right from the off you can save money. Ditch the traditional wedding stationary and save on postage by sending an email invitation. Get creative and design an e-invite to capture the mood of the day. Or why not create a wedding website. There are many to choose from that are free. They also offer so much more, you can have an online budget, store photographs and collect ideas as well and send e-invites and track your RSVPS.

Cheap but Cheerful Continuing down the English country garden theme why not serve an afternoon tea to complement the style of the day. You could serve your guests sandwiches and scones with jam and cream and of course your wedding cake would suit this catering theme perfectly, especially if you had a vanilla sponge cake. You could serve your wedding cake as the dessert. Nothing suits this style of catering more that a pot of tea so this will cut down on your alcohol expense as well. If you want something more substantial you could have a pig roast or a fish and chip van. Many fish and chip shops have an outside catering van and can provide fish and chips etc at your venue depending on the outside space of course.

Something Borrowed Wedding cars are one element of the day that you can easily cut back on by being a bit creative. A traditional wedding car is going to cost you anywhere between £250 - £600. Do you have a family friend or neighbour with a nice, or an unusual car that wouldn’t mind driving you? Buy some ribbons or streamers to decorate it and offer to get the car valeted in return, which will be a fraction of the hire price.

You could offer ice creams. Buy in a selection of cones and a variety of flavours and have fun with the toppings and sprinkles. You would need to find a volunteer to help with the serving or you could even let your guests help themselves. However, if things are very tight then why not ask the guests to contribute to a ‘community wedding’. Invite everyone to bring their own picnic and select a nice quiet corner of your local park. Take rugs, cushions and deck chairs and even a few outdoor games to add to the entertainment. If you choice a spot under a tree you could add streamers, bunting and lanterns to decorate the lower branches.

Dressing Up The venue, food and drink are a very large part of the budget so you will need to think outside the box a little to bring these costs down. Church Halls can be hired very cheaply and often come with tables and chairs that you can use and most have a fairly good kitchen in place and will permit self catering. With a bit of community spirit and a little help from your friends the place can be transformed. Choose a suitable theme such as English country garden and decorate the tables with ribbon adorned jam jars full of meadow flowers or tea lights. Ask people you know to lend you their table linen for the day and scour the

With a little imagination and a little help from your friends you could have a uniquely themed wedding that’s low in cost but big on love and community spirit; what more would you want on your special day!

each time. After 5 days you should notice lots of bubbles and a pungent smell.

* Put 100g of mineral water and 100g of good quality bread flour into a large container such as an empty ice cream tub or a large 1.5ltr kilner jar and give it a good stir.

* Each time you use your starter you need to refresh it by pouring some out and refilling it with equal water and flour.

* Cover and leave for 24hrs on the side in the kitchen.

Tip* don’t pour your starter down the sink as many recipes tell you to, simply heat up a frying pan, add a large egg and 50g of flour to 50g of the starter, mix well and fry like pancakes.

* Everyday for the next 5 days add 100ml of mineral water and 100g of bread four stirring 52

INGREDIENTS:

top looks a bit dull but holes have started appearing.

300g Sour dough starter Bicarbonate soda Sea salt 600ml Double cream Honey 450g of Stilton 6 whole Walnuts in shell 1 bunch of watercress 1 green apple 1 bunch of spring onion tops only 1 bottle of homemade French dressing (email mike@takefood.co.uk for recipe)

• Remove from the heat and set aside while you finish the batch off. You can reheat and toast the tops under the grill when ready to eat. • To make the stilton butter whisk the cream with the balloon whisk attachment until it becomes thick and then swap the whisk for the K beater and continue beating the cream on low speed so when the liquid separates from the solids it doesn’t spray the kitchen walls.

EQUIPMENT: 6 x crumpet rings 1 x pastry brush 1 x nut cracker 1 x non stick frying pan 1 x baking tray 1 kitchen aid with balloon whisk and K beater 1 x cooks knife and chopping board (solid wood is good) 1 x measuring spoons set 1 x mixing bowl

• Take the solid lump out of the bowl and squeeze it between your hands over the bowl to catch the excess liquid - keep the liquid in the fridge until ready to use. • Put the butter back in the bowl with the stilton and mix on slow speed until well combined. You wont need all of the stilton butter for this recipe so roll up in parchment paper and store in the fridge for 1 week or freeze for 3 months.

METHOD: • To make the crumpet batter pour in 300g of the sour dough starter into the mixing bowl and whisk in 1/4 tsp of baking powder, .1/2 tsp of salt and 1 tsp of honey.

• When ready to eat brush the top of the crumpets with the buttermilk leftover from churning the butter and toast the crumpets under the grill.

• Heat the pan on a medium heat, crack the shells to remove the nuts and toast them for a few minutes on medium heat then set aside for later.

• Spread crumpets generously with the stilton butter, crush the walnuts over the top and drizzle with honey. • Serve with the watercress, thinly sliced onion tops and green apple slices tossed with French dressing.

• Brush the crumpet rings with oil and place in the hot pan and drizzle a little oil inside the ring.

STOURBRIDGE RUGBY CLUB MOVES FORWARD UNDER LOCKDOWN time and a new format of the Touch Rugby game has been developed to help with fitness, skills and game play called Ready4Rugby. This new stage will be monitored closely and if successful, there’s a possibility of playing competitive Ready4Rugby games against other clubs.

As with other organisations, the lockdown due to Coronavirus, has had a devastating effect on Stourbridge Rugby Club. Last season finished early for all levels of the Club, with all activity stopped and the Club completely closed down. With no matches or training, the cancellation of the May Weekend and other events, all revenue for the Club ceased as well.

Stage C could be in place for many months, so at Stourbridge Rugby, a positive approach has been taken to the new way of coaching and playing our sport. As there is no contact in any of the training or games, it opens up the opportunity for anyone who wants to try out Rugby, but may have been a bit nervous about the contact elements, to give it a go, get fitter and become part of a vibrant, proactive club at the heart of its community.

In July, as restrictions were lifted, there has been a phased re-opening of the Club, starting with training sessions for the First XV to test out the new ways of coaching rugby. Temperature checks for ’track & trace’, training in small pods of 6 and disinfecting equipment regularly were just some of the new ways that coaches and players had to get used to. After a couple of weeks, training was opened up to other sections of the Club, who jumped at the chance to get back together (at a distance of course) and get a rugby ball back in their hands.

Everyone at Stourbridge Rugby recognises that the effects that COVID-19 have had on the operating of the Club, are nothing compared to the devastating effect it has had on many people’s lives. The Club has lost a number of longstanding members to this dreadful virus, so our thoughts are with everyone who has been touched by it; and our thanks will always be with our fantastic NHS.

In mid-August, the RFU negotiated with the Government a further easing of the restrictions placed on Rugby, moving to ’Stage C’ of our Return to Rugby Road Map. With the same testing and disinfecting systems in place, this allows for up to 20 players to train at the same 55

BROMSGROVE SCHOOL BEST MAGAZINE AWARD Talented media and design pupils from Bromsgrove School are celebrating after winning an array of awards at the prestigious Shine School Media Awards, a national competition that rewards the talent of senior school pupils who work on the editorial and design of a school magazine, newspaper, podcast or website.

fantastic read, well done." “One of the enduring images of the Covid lockdown was the apartment buildings of Madrid and Milan, with neighbours leaning over tiny balconies chatting, bashing saucepans to pay tribute to healthcare workers, or singing and playing guitar to pass those strange evenings”, commented Richard Chapman, Shine Deputy Chair. “This wonderful cover image captures a series of six stories in a single illustration: every character comes to life on their balcony, bursting with a story to be told, together but alone. Two Zero One is the publication all our judges were instantly drawn to because of that almost haunting image and bold type – the hallmark of a great magazine cover.”

The team was ecstatic when they learned that their pupil magazine Two Zero One had won Best Magazine, Best Front Cover, Best Overall Content and received Highly Commended for Best Illustration and Artwork, Best Print and Design and Best Cartoon. Twelve pupils worked on the magazine, so it truly was a team effort. Congratulations to Vivianne Zhang Wei, who was awarded Editor of the Year. Speaking about the Best Magazine Award, the judges felt that “this was a truly inspiring entry, given the circumstances of its production under lockdown. Interesting, wide-ranging and engaging content, voicing the concerns and topics of the moment, together with lifestyle and arts content, pulled together with attractive design and glorious illustrations. A

Headmaster Peter Clague said, “this is fantastic news - a wonderful postscript to the year and an absolutely fitting acknowledgement of a remarkable editorial team”. Judge Charles Garside, from Associated Newspapers said, “Two Zero One really tackled the pandemic well, making it relevant

to the school and the readers. An excellent, unique piece of art made a striking front page on the diversity and loneliness of lockdown, with the headline Alone Together giving an upbeat message. Really well signposted and themed, I liked the history on pandemics in Bromsgrove and particularly liked the take on the virtual classroom and distance teaching. Beyond Covid-19, there was still plenty of other interesting content”. “What Vivianne and the team managed to create in lockdown is a fitting testament to their talent, teamwork and tenacity”, said Ms Victoria Adams, Teacher of English at Bromsgrove. “Watching live together on Zoom was not quite the same as attending the ceremony at Stationers’ Hall in London but the camaraderie and friendship of these outstanding young people, led by winning editor Vivianne, was a joy to behold.”

JDRF CHARITY RUN *THE DISCO TROT* For the last 10 years, Chris Barnett and his family have been raising awareness of type 1 Diabetes by supporting the leading charity in its field, JDRF. JDRF fund type 1 diabetes research and are committed to finding the cure. They fund world class research ensuring research moves forward and treatments are delivered as well as giving support and a voice to people with type 1 and their families. Chris lost his brother David 10 years ago who had type 1 diabetes and since then, Chris and his family have undertaken several fundraising events raising money for the charity which is now totalling over ÂŁ70,000. Their achievement was recognised by the Duchess of Cornwall who they met a few years ago.

Most of the fundraising events have been sport related with Chris taking part in marathons, triathlons, Ironmans and cricket tournaments to name but a few. “The London Marathon was the first challenge I ever undertook back in 2011 and as many of you will know, running has since become a passion and something that has helped me noend in dealing with his loss. To mark the 10 year anniversary of losing his brother, Chris decided to take on the extraordinary challenge of running continuously for 24 hours around a 5km loop in Hagley. At 10am on the 20th June 58

Our Charity 2020, Chris started his run and had hundreds of supporters alongside cheering him on. Over 55 friends and family did a relay and ran one or several loops to support him, despite the heavy rain in the early hours of Sunday morning. Chris completed the challenge and ran an astonishing total of 109 miles in the 24 hours. To put it into context, this is the equivalent of running further than four marathons back to back. Keep an eye for Chris running around the local area. He thanks everyone deeply for their continued support. What might Chris choose to do next? keep your pets in tip top condition Keep your pets in tip top condition Our Pets

Well we’re almost at the turn of the season once again, the nights are starting to fade, the leaves are turning to browns and we’re noticing the cold morning breeze in the air.

and painful joint and dental problems. Although the fresh fruit and vegetables are important, take care not feed too much fruit as we don’t want them getting diabetes.

It’s been a strange year so far, one that we will never forget and normal routines have very much changed. One important routine can still be kept and should not be forgotten and that’s making sure that your pets are in tip top condition! It’s a good time to give your furry friends a once over and a good groom to remove any dead fur, this will help keep their coats nice and healthy and let their skin breath as well as removing any debris. Check their teeth and nails and have a good look at them all over to make sure they are in tip top condition as we head towards the colder months.

Like other rodents, guinea pigs’ teeth continuously grow, so it is important that they get the right diet and care. Just like rabbits, guinea pigs need an unlimited supply of high-quality grass hay to help keep their teeth from growing too long and also to help aid digestion as well as helping to prevent boredom. Dandelions, for example, have a lot of health benefits as they are high in fiber, antioxidants and a good source of minerals as well as vitamins. Rabbits absolutely love dandelions and they can eat the leaves as well as the flower, these along with rabbit friendly twigs can be mixed into their hay and be hidden to make your furry ones life that little bit more interesting. In the wild rabbits would forage for a large percentage of their time and established dandelion plants can flower again in the autumn.

For Rabbits flystrike can be a problem at any time of the year, if a bluebottle fly finds a warm place to feed and reproduce it may continue to do so and not hibernate during the winter. Many flies are harmless but some, such as the bluebottle, will lay their eggs on poor bunnies’ fur. When the eggs hatch the maggots begin to eat the rabbit’s flesh and sadly this can cause shock and death in a very short amount of time.

Take care with rabbit and guinea pig mixes as they can cause the little darlings to feed selectively, picking out their favourite bits and not eating others that contain vital nutrients. Pellets on the other hand are full of fibre and have an even spread of nutrients to prevent selective feeding. Don’t let bunny and piggy fill up on too many pellets though, they need to eat enough hay to help keep their teeth healthy.

Flies are particularly attracted to soiled or damp fur around bunny’s bottom. It is good practice to check your rabbit daily throughout the year and twice daily in the summer, to ensure that they are clean and healthy. Pay particular attention to their behind, keep this area well groomed, clean and dry which will help minimise the risk of Flystrike and ensure that any issues are dealt with immediately. Should you notice any problems, ensure that you contact your Veterinary Surgeon as soon as possible.

It’s a good idea to get an annual check-up with the Vet if possible, to ensure that your furry ones stay in ‘tip hop’ I mean, tip top condition!!! Important always check that your garden plants are non-toxic for your pet before they are planted, some may be toxic to animals and can make them seriously ill and even cause death. Always contact your veterinarian if you are ever concerned about your pet or think that they may have ingested something toxic or something that has not agreed with them.

Just like humans guinea pigs can’t produce their own vitamin C so it’s a good idea to supplement their diet by providing them with fresh fruit and vegetables to ensure that they stay healthy. Bell peppers are a great source of vitamin C and a really tasty treat too. Sadly, without the correct diet guinea pigs will quickly become deficient in vitamin C, which can then lead to a condition called Scurvy. Unfortunately, Scurvy is quite common in guinea pigs, the condition can cause skin issues

MAZDA 3 GT SPORT TECH AWD low at 109, and it also suggested that 45.6 mpg should be achievable.

The Mazda 3 has all the attributes required to take on some of its more higher class rivals, it is now available with a new Sky Active-X petrol engine and this does improve fuel efficiency and performance and there is also the option of an all-wheel drive derivative, writes Bob Hickman.

The interior is extremely well designed and functional, however the GT Line test car had black leather seats and I found the interior to be a little on the dark side and would have benefited from a lighter headlining.

There are 28 models to choose from between saloon and a hatchback body style so there should be a derivative that ticks your box. The new engine produces 180ps from its 4-cylinder 2-litre engine. In this day and age it is strange not to have a turbo to boost the power. The stop/start device attributed to the vehicle worked quite well and the 6-speed gearbox was a delight, and most if not all of the ratios being available to use. The power delivery was smooth almost linear. Mazda suggests that the CO emissions will be quite

Externally the new Mazda 3 looks very impressive and it is pleasing to report that the looks translate to the driving dynamics, the steering is very direct. The suspension is tuned for a more sporty feel to it and in my opinion could have been a little softer because we do have awful road surfaces in the UK, that having been said, take the car down some twisty B roads and it really does produce a vehicle that was a rewarding companion.

66

Our Motoring The level of equipment on the whole range is extensive, the technological features are quite outstanding, all of the Mazda 3 have a heads up information projected display on to the windscreen, this needs to be seen to be fully appreciated. All models also include navigation, Apple Car Play or an android auto and an advance speaker audio system. Even the Sport entry level has enhanced features to make the car more comfortable and a rewarding companion.

and 60 degree cameras and guiding monitor system feature , a lot of these features you can well do without. Surprisingly in this day and age the manufacturer does not give a multi-choice of engines. The choice is limited to the 2.0 litre petrol. There are 6 trim levels to choose dependent on the depth of your pocket. SE, SEL, Lux, Sport, Sport Lux, GT Sport, and GT Sport Tech, you need to visit the dealership to find out which of these models ticks your box with the equipment that you deem necessary.

Like most vehicles when you move up the specifications the amount of equipment increases, reversing cameras, keyless entry, heated front seats, suddenly become an additional feature. On the top specification models heated steering wheels, Bose audio

Keep calm and don’t panic! My goodness, what a period we have been through! For some the knock-on effect of the virus on the financial markets may have brought about some anxiety and concern.

Siobhan Record Our Lifestyle’s Financial Expert

3. Don’t look at your portfolio too often - Once a year is more than enough. Stop listening to the news too, if it worries you. 4. Accept that you cannot time when to be in and out of markets – it is simply not possible.

At times like this, it is worth reminding ourselves that it is this very uncertainty of the shorter-term market outcomes that delivers returns above those of bank deposits over the longer term.

5. Even though markets have fallen, remember that you still own everything you did before. 6. Most crucially, a fall does not turn into a loss unless you sell your investments at the wrong time -If you don’t need the money, why would you sell?

You may be asking yourself whether this health-driven market event is different to those that have gone before. It is, but only because every market fall is driven by a different combination of events that impact on future corporate earnings. What should remain the same is your response to it, that is to avoid panic, avoid unnecessary emotionally driven investment activity and believe in the power of markets to recover in time.

7. A trusted adviser can act as your behavioural coach to urge you to stay the course - a source of fortitude, patience and discipline. If you are interested in knowing more about how I work and have investments of over £100,000 why not give Jo a ring on 01562 745730 to arrange a no obligation 30 minute free meeting in our offices.

Here are some tips to help keep things in perspective:

Past performance is not a reliable indicator of future results The value investments, and the income from them, may fall or rise and investors may get back less than they invested.

1. Embrace the uncertainty of markets – that’s what delivers you with strong, long-term returns. 2. Measure your portfolio’s performance over a longer timeframe – For instance, over the past five years, investors have received handsome growth despite recent falls.

screens, more hand sanitising stations and an appointment only system.”

Talbots Law has been named as the best legal firm to work for in the Black Country after moving up 13 places in the Sunday Times and Best Companies national list.

She continued: “The Best Companies ranking highlights what a great team we have here and we’re delighted to be the best law firm to work for in the Black Country and in the top three across the Midlands.

The independent law firm, which employs over 240 people across six offices in Codsall, Dudley, Halesowen, Kidderminster, Stourbridge and Wolverhampton, was in 52nd place on the prestigious rankings and was also awarded a 2-star rating for the way it engages with its staff.

“This is just the start. I’m determined that by improving our employee engagement we can achieve the 3-star rating in 2021.”

Its index score improved by 4% from 2019 and was driven by high marks in personal growth, wellbeing and in being able to give something back, with over £50,000 raised for Birmingham Children’s Hospital in the last twelve months.

Talbots Law made a string of senior promotions at the beginning of the year to help it oversee expansion across all areas of the business and a £2m increase in fees on the previous twelve months.

The company has also been using its legal expertise to support frontline NHS workers during Covid-19, providing a free will writing service for doctors, nurses, hospital staff and ambulance technicians.

Whilst Covid-19 has caused significant issues for the legal sector, the firm’s new business development team has a pipeline of new opportunities to work through, with the public still very keen to move home and an inevitable increase in dispute and family disagreements arising from this unfortunate situation.

“Our staff have been fantastic in continuing to support our clients throughout the pandemic, whether that is advising on commercial transactions or property enquiries to personal issues around trust and estates,” explained Mary Morgan, Chief Executive of Talbots Law.

Mary concluded: “Week by week, we are slowly seeing a lot of work that was put on hold starting to come back and also a significant number of new enquiries. It’s good to be back and supporting local Black Country and Worcestershire people and businesses.”

“A lot of this work has been done by our teams working at home, but now we have started to get more employees back into our six offices, all socially distancing and with additional safety measures, such as perspex
