LIGHTING IN THE HOME www.jennifersuzanne.co.uk 07977330011

jennifer@jennifersuzanne.co.uk @jennifersuzanneinteriors

With Autumn season approaching I’ve been inspired by lighting in the home and you can add layers of light to our interior spaces making our homes come to life.

have mainly wall lights as their general light. A general light is the light that you switch on to give you enough light to see when you are in the room.

SO WHAT DO LAYERS OF LIGHT MEAN?

Mood lighting - this may be table lamps, wall lights or picture lights that give added interest and highlight interesting objects or features within the room.

This is simply a good general light level plus mood lights for areas of interest and task lighting for reading, homework, cleaning and cooking where a good strong light is needed. General light - sometimes described as ambient lighting. This is typically a central light but not always. Some period properties

This level of light is the most creative and allows you to put some depth, charm and personality into the room. 8

Our Home of avoiding this, draw a sketch of your room and plot your furniture, ask yourself do you want to light up a favourite area of furniture of focus your eyes to a piece of artwork or mirror hung on the wall, do you need an area to read in the lounge or bedroom. Do you want extra sockets for lamps by console or side tables? Would you like to light up the ceiling or light up the stairwell so it glows at night. So many other elements to lighting and the atmosphere in the home can change from day to night with the right plan in place you can be creative and leave out expensive mistakes with a good lighting room plan.

This is the bit that is the most fun and also the bit most people worry about. It may be worth wandering around the room with a lamp and trying it in different places. Hold it in close to the wall, at lower levels, next to your favourite object and feature in the room and if you like the effect try to replicate it with either fixed wall lights or table lamps. Finally task lights - this is a brighter light where you need it and when you need it. The most common use of task lighting is as a reading light. This could be a floor lamp next to the arm chair, a desk light or a bedside table lamp. And don’t forget the kitchen - maybe some under cupboard lighting to give lots of light on the worktops or a good strong light above the sink or cooker, so you are not working in shadows.

MY MOST ASKED INTERIOR DESIGN LIGHTING QUESTION HOW MANY DOWNLIGHTS… The truth is that there is no simple answer to this question. As different rooms have different requirements. A room may need more or less light depending on its size, use and type of decor.

BULB TYPE We have all been there and if your anything like me stuck in B&Q looking at the bulbs wishing you had taken note of the lamps requirements but also the same care and attention should be taken for the following when choosing bulb types: • •

• •

For example, a kitchen where food is prepared may need more light than say, a living room, which typically has more of a relaxed atmosphere.

How bright do you need your space (watts) What atmosphere are you trying to achieve (colour temperature, e.g. lower temp is more similar to candlelight, while higher temps are more akin to a blue sky outside) Should energy efficiency be considered (for more frequently used lights) Are you trying to make a design or focal statement (with scale, shape or colours)?

Ideally you don’t want to flood your ceiling with too many downlights and not enough, the general rule of you can go by is around 1 downlight per 1.4m2 of coverage at an average roof height for an adequate cover of light. You should ideally leave a gap of 3 feet 0.914 metre between the edge of your ceiling and your downlights. The reason is simple – if your downlights are too close to the wall, they will create unwanted shadows, which can actually make the room, appear smaller than it is. A distance of about 3 feet allows the light to reflect off the walls and makes the room feel lighter and airier. I have a qualified electrician to do my electrical work and any questions on lighting I always go to a professional qualified

LIGHTING POSITIONS…PLAN, PLAN, PLAN The key to lighting is planning and without a clear plan you can miss important areas for lighting so thinking ahead is a good way 9

Our Home OUTSIDE LIGHTING Don’t forget your exterior lighting is an important as interior, the safety aspect of lighting your outside space will give you that feeling of security.

electrician to check what is possible and safe.

MY TOP 5 TIPS DINING ROOM CHANDELIER HEIGHT As a rule of thumb in general, the bottom of a chandelier should be about 30 inches from the top of your table.

CONSIDER METAL FINISHES Less is more try and keep all your lighting material finishes consistent throughout the home, especially when it comes to lighting, choose a metallic such as a brass gold finish or a chrome finish and stick to it, you can add statement pops of colour with through lampshades and decorative lighting styles.

USE DIMMER SWITCHES Dimmers can instantly change a room’s atmosphere—and help you save on your electricity bill. Install dimmer switches in as many rooms and with as many fixtures as you’d like to gain more control over your lighting. Use dimmers to change the mood and balance artificial light with natural light.

If you have any questions or need help to source a light fitting design or style to suit your home interiors please get in touch via email Jennifer@jennifersuzanne.co.uk and follow me on Instagram @jennifersuzanneinteriors for lighting inspirations.

TV-FOCUSED SPACES Use less overhead light and more ambient and task lighting, such as lamps. This helps to reduce glare on screens.

Garden Rooms Making more room in your life A carpenter for 30 years, I’ve been designing and creating garden rooms since 2004 for customers looking to create home offices or additional space for the family.

It’s important to me that each and every customer is 100 per cent happy and when their journey with Mez Design is complete, I can walk away feeling a great sense of pride. But don’t just take my word for it!

This year has seen more people that ever investing in their homes and recognising the added value a garden room can bring. With a number of companies to choose from, what makes Mez Design stand out is that you get a craftsman and not a salesman and my love of great design and attention to detail is reflected in the high quality of the build.

“Paul and the team did a great job and their craftsmanship and expertise was clear to see all the way through. It was so good to see people who care so much in what they do and for the customer. We are over the moon with our garden and if you are considering a garden room please speak to Paul before you decide. We made a great choice.” Brian Morgan, Stourton “Truly delighted with our garden room built for me by Paul and his team. Knowledgeable, informative and helpful from initial concept and design to building complete, Paul made the process simple, hassle free and quick. Highly recommend you getting in touch with Mez Design if you’re thinking about having one built.” Steve Cooper, Kinver

Customers always say - “it’s good to meet a person passionate about his work.” And from start to finish I’m there every step of the way, from talking through ideas, to creating the garden room and overseeing the internal finishes.

Its that time of year when we are starting to put our flip flops away & bracing ourselves to start layering up again. When you look in your winter wardrobe there are always pieces you can wear for another season, but adding some new season colour, a different shaped heel plus some lovely new knitwear is a complete joy, there is plenty of texture on the High St & pops of primary colour, but looking at the September Vogue every shade of Mocha is a definite go to for a wardrobe update.

I was seriously spoilt for choice with the Mocha trend, have a look at meandem.com for gorgeous casual luxury, tailored items in soft fabrics & flattering styles, Mango have also created a fantastic transitional range of sports luxe outfits. Look out for tweed caps & berets plus lace up boots can be feminine if you shop around. 27

Block colour is here again, be brave & clash primary colours even if its only your accessories, you can always make a statement with a pair of fabulous shoes & a gorgeous handbag, I have chosen desirable pieces from meandem.com who as I have said once have created amazing luxe pieces, wear black as a base or reverse, wear coloured separates & a black jacket. Look out for cutout tops & dresses, very sophisticated in black with metallic or coloured accessories. Choose statement shades, there are some beauties instore.

NEW TEXTURE The Autumn season always brings out new texture, 2021 is all about tweed, embroidery, quilting & ribbed second skin knitwear. Multiple mini bags are still a trend plus loafers are everywhere, classic or chunky. I have recently bought some French Connection jeans, they are a great fit, so I have added a new season pair to my fashion edit, as I like to share a good find! Fringing is on knitwear & leather, which I love, Repeat is a quality cashmere brand who create fantastic separates in soft colours with matching denim. The quilted jacket from Zara comes in 2 colourways, such a nice wardrobe refresh. I hope I have offered some new season inspiration, Happy Shopping! Sally x www.shecanstyle.co.uk 29

WHAT’S THE BIG DEAL ABOUT BEING HAIRY? Well compared to other apes and mammals, humans are practically bald! Instead of thick fur covering our bodies, many of us mainly have thick hair on top of our heads— and a few other places, such as the pubic area and the armpits. The rest of our body is covered in relatively thin terminal or vellus hair. Vellus hair is the fine, wispy hair that covers most of the body. It develops in childhood and remains on much of the body throughout adulthood. During puberty, some vellus hair changes to thicker hair called terminal hair.

Lisa Evans Reid Clinical Director at Reflect

it. The Neanderthal human practiced primitive forms of shaving and hair cutting, perhaps to avoid lice and matted hair issues! As humans evolved, facial hair became a fashion statement, so removing parts of it to achieve whatever look was in vogue became a necessity. Women in many parts of the world were soon expected to keep their legs and armpits hairless, and when the bathing suit came into play, so did the expectation of a well-groomed bikini line. These days, hair removal is generally viewed as a cosmetic issue -- getting rid of that hairy back or the embarrassing female moustache. Most cultures have acceptable and unacceptable areas and amounts of hair, making it necessary to oblige these unwritten rules to avoid being ostracised.

There are many benefits to having both terminal and vellus (soft) hair over our bodies. Hair is important for maintaining skin health, as each hair follicle has blood vessels, nerves, and fat around it. Hair follicles are rich in stem cells that promote healing of the skin and is helpful if you have a cut or wound. Hair also keeps you warm, protects the skin from the elements and to a certain degree hair can protect you from sun damage. Note: never a reason not to wear sun protection! Genetics is the most common cause of thick, plentiful body hair. Certain genes can make men more sensitive to the effects of testosterone, the hormone that encourages the growth of body hair. All women have facial and body hair, but it's normally less than men. Women tend to have terminal hair only on their arms and legs and more vellus hair on their face.

Excessive Hair Disorders - Hirsutism The condition of Hirsutism is caused by excess hormones called androgens. Anyone can develop hirsutism, males can often be overwhelmed with excessive hair growth all over their bodies and women can develop the same excessive body hair growth or just in places where men usually grow it, like on their face (beard) or chest.

The trend of being hair free isn’t new!

There can be several triggers for this disorder, especially in women. Examples can be Polycystic Ovary Syndrome (PCOS) which is a disease affecting the ovaries which is related to the endocrine system and excessive hair growth can unfortunately be a symptom.

If we look at the history of hair removal, it's clear that humans have been trying to get rid of it ever since they've had 36

Our Health Another example is menopause which can trigger excessive facial hair in some women. Both can be distressing and have a dramatic effect on mental wellbeing.

Epilation – Effective but can be painful, requires regular treatments to thin the hair out.

Threading – Great, but can cause trauma to the hair follicle resulting folliculitis or skin irritation such as spots.

Laser Hair Removal – Great and can be semi-permanent but only treats dark hair, and you may need a top up course every 3 years or so if you have had any hormonal changes.

Hair Removal Options •

Shaving – Affordable, but time consuming as it must be done once a week or even for excessive hair sufferers every day and that can cause skin issues and ingrowing hairs.

Plucking – Fiddly, time consuming and is generally only really used for the eyebrows, it can cause in grown hairs.

Electrolysis – Super at destroying grey and white hairs permanently but it can be painful.

Depilatory Creams – Messy, may cause soreness and overtime can cause pigmentation issues to the skin.

Waxing – Is great if you are not too hairy but is painful! It will need repeating every six weeks.

Dermaplaning – Very popular these days and brilliant for lifting excessive vellus hair on the face and exfoliating dead skin cells away but requires monthly treatments.

So, which one would you choose?

Birmingham St Mary’s and John Taylor Hospice confirm successful charity merger Birmingham St Mary’s and John Taylor Hospices are delighted to announce that the two charities have successfully merged together to form one Birmingham wide organisation. From today (August 2nd) the two charities are now a new single registered charity, The Hospice Charity Partnership.

“I am looking forward to continuing to working with our amazing teams across both sites.”

The two Hospice sites and Inpatient Units are being preserved, as well as each hospice’s individual identity.

The impact of the COVID-19 pandemic lead to both hospices, together with other partners, launching a joint service to co-ordinate end of life care across the area to meet the increasing needs of patients.

Both Birmingham St Mary’s and John Taylor Hospice will also continue to deliver the same services to patients and their families and there will be no changes to the quality of care offered.

This highlighted the importance of providing palliative care and the need to secure the future of both charities at such a turbulent time.

The Selly Park and Erdington-based hospices have been working together closely for many years to improve palliative and end of life care for more people across Birmingham and Sandwell.

Simon Fuller, Chief Executive of The Hospice Charity Partnership, added: “This is a positive development for the city, and in the best interests of patients and their families across the region.

Harry Turner, Chair of the Board of Trustees, said: “For both Boards the merger of Birmingham St Mary’s and John Taylor Hospices marks a landmark moment for end of life care across Birmingham.

“The COVID-19 pandemic has increased the amount of people requiring care and will continue to do so.

“Being able to make this a reality puts the two organisations in a strong position moving forward in the future.

“A single, integrated charity will be more able to meet the needs of patients, ensure we are financially resilient and a make us a stronger partner in the local healthcare system.

“By working together, the two hospices can build on the current joint working arrangement and be better able to offer a seamless service to more patients across the north and the south of the city in a way that is both cost-effective and sustainable.

“Providing the best healthcare possible for our patients will always remain our top priority and by merging as one organisation it will allow more pennies in the pound to be spent directly on services for patients and families.” 38

Nick and Royston - Men's Hair The New Romantic Never has there been a better time to embrace length & texture. Long hair became a lockdown cult for guys and the Summer of 21 is going to be the season that we refine those over-grown locks resulting in heavy fringes and face-flattering textured crops utilizing the texture and movement that’s been gained over lockdown. Think head-turning, stylish statement hair! TOP TIP: the end result will be all based on your hair type - a bowl-like effect will be the result of thick & straight hair, so the key is to visit an experienced men’s hair stylist. You can leave it soft if you want more length – Remember, it has to be layered and texturized or it will look to bowl-like.

Statement Tones Say hello to a statement, stand out colour as we celebrate freedom in every way possible. Expect to see a myriad of seamless smokey greys, platinum and ash tones this summer. These colours are great for men who want to give their style a very fashionled look. Those who like a more stand out shade, should opt for platinum and smoky greys whilst the subtle and less dramatic option is a subtle ashy grey tone. These smokey hues are the perfect solution to compliment stylish cuts and summer complexions. TOP TIP: Visit a Colour Specialist and discuss tones that will compliment your individual skin-tone. Beautiful, seamless platinum hues require high levels of commitment! Before lightening, make sure that you understand the investment you will need to make in professional home care products and regular salon visits. We love the new Kerastase Blonde range to keep platinum tones cool and conditioned. 40

Education

SUCCEEDING IS ACHIEVING The breadth and success of our extra curricula offer is astonishing. Our sport has ranked us in the top six of all UK independent schools for the last seven years, not in one particular sport but across 26 sports. And in addition to the 280 sports teams we put out and all the musical ensembles, choirs and orchestras, our pupils have 110 other activities to choose from each week.

At Bromsgrove, we believe pupils are happiest when they are succeeding. We offer an all-round education, combining academic excellence with a richness of opportunity. Pupils engage enthusiastically with knowledge, embrace new ideas and are intellectually stimulated. We pride ourselves on the outstanding opportunities available, both inside and outside the classroom, whether at Nursery, Pre-Prep, Preparatory or Senior School.

There are easier schools to choose than Bromsgrove. We are proud of our 500 year old school. It is traditional, disciplined and very down to earth but it really is a dynamic and exciting place to be. Our mission is for Bromsgrovians to leave us as happy, creative, moral citizens who live motivated, fulfilled lives whilst enriching the lives of others and should you wish to visit to meet our young people and see what we do, you would be most welcome.

Bromsgrove pupils achieve first division academic performance not only in GCSEs, but also A levels, the International Baccalaureate and BTECs in Sport and Business. We teach and learn with passion and flair, but insist upon academic rigour. However, we recognise that there is little point in getting top grades if you are unable to engage with other people. So, each and every day at Bromsgrove there is time dedicated for developing other vital life and social skills. 44

NANCY CARSON - NOVELIST When I read R D Blackmore’s Lorna Doone as part of my English literature studies at school, I was enthralled, and it was that story which inspired me to become a romance novelist.

in Dudley in the early 1900s, and is the story of two step-sisters who were rivals in love; The Railway Girl is a romantic comedy, although it has its sorrowful parts, written around a historical and tragic railway accident that occurred in Brierley Hill in 1858. Daisy’s Betrayal set in the 1890s is a potent tale of passion and relentless vindictiveness that draws attention to the Dudley underworld. Then came A Country Girl, a story of one young man and five entirely different women who influence his life, and its sequel A Fallen Woman, abounding in scandal. Both are set in Brierley Hill in the 1890s.

Although I have been writing since 1990, my first novel was not published until 1997, followed by eight more, published by Hodder & Stoughton. In 2015, Avon Books, an imprint of HarperCollins, decided to re-publish my backlist. The first novel Avon issued, both as an ebook and a paperback was Poppy’s Dilemma, an earthy love story set largely in a railway navvies’ encampment in Dudley in the early 1850s during the construction of the Oxford, Worcester and Wolverhampton Railway. It sold well.

Since then, I have complete two more novels, but decided to self-publish rather than rely on the rollercoaster and uncertainty of traditional publishing. Many established authors have successfully taken this route.

Next came The Dressmaker’s Daughter, a saga set on Kates Hill in Dudley between 1904 and 1929. This was the first book of a trilogy based on the women of the Kite family; the other titles in the trilogy are The Factory Girl, and Rags to Riches.

When Libby is brought to Charles's attention as a possible secretary, he comes to admire her competence, while his sons Edward and Hugh admire her vivacious looks and likeable personality. Despite her lowly background, both brothers vie for her attention, but using vastly different methods. Libby grows to love one and despise the other, with disastrous consequences for everybody. A compulsive tale of romance, betrayal and heartbreaking treachery.

in 1853, Isabel Saxby is a successful young business woman with independent means, due to an anonymous benefactor. Unmarried, Isabel falls in love with Barnaby Micklejohn, a widower assigned from England to work as an official in the colonial government. While their romance flourishes, Isabel carefully avoids divulging her past. She receives a letter from her mother in England begging her to return to Worcester to visit her dying father. Her sense of duty compels her to make the long voyage, so she defers all arrangements for her future with Barnaby.

A born storyteller, Nancy Carson weaves a vividly atmospheric story around some remarkable characters and the significant events that shape their lives.

Aboard the renowned ship SS Great Britain bound for Liverpool, Isabel’s extraordinary past is revealed - but surely at a cost to her future with Barnaby.

RUGBY IS BACK Dare we say it? Rugby is back as we all remember it. Fifteen a side competitive games between evenly matched clubs with Stourbridge winning the majority of the encounters. Crowds cheering, parents nervously watching their children. We have even missed the dreaded referee whistles. We have missed the light hearted banter, the postmatch chat over a beer or two and we have missed most of all the friendship and goodwill and all those much repeated reminiscences that we have not had the opportunity to repeat for some eighteen months.

McGeechan of British and Irish Lions renown and the inimitable Test Match Special expert Jonathan Agnew, who you might have heard developing a second career as one of the equestrian commentators at the recent Tokyo 2020 Olympics. Our Master of Ceremonies on the day will be ex British and Irish Lions winger John Bentley. Please come and join us at a home game in what we trust will be a balmy September. Our two opening games are here at Stourton Park against Sheffield Tigers on September 4th and against Hull on September 11th.

As well as the on-field return to normality we have witnessed a surge of interest in booking parties in the club house and a healthy take up of tables for our Corporate Lunch on September 24th and the evening ball on Saturday 25th. With increased confidence we can look forward to our Family Bonfire and Fireworks night on Friday November 5th.

Our Mini and Junior boys and girls and our Ladies are desperate to get back to the game and training started in early August. We are indebted to all the hard work and commitment shown by so many members and sponsors as we have worked our way through the last eighteen months.

Just a reminder that the speakers at the Corporate Lunch in September will be Sir Ian

Stay safe and well. 48

PRESCRIBING FRUIT AND VEG IS A GOOD STEP TOWARDS HEALTHIER LIVING, SAY ORGANIC EXPERTS Despite this, food experts believe that these proposals, alongside recent changes in advertising laws, are positive steps towards a healthier country.

The independent report that proposed GPs should be given the option to prescribe fruit and veg to those suffering from the effects of poor diet has been met with mixed responses since its release in recent weeks.

Harrison Jones is the founder of frozen organic company Equals Health, and he believes that suggestions like this aren’t a catch-all solution, but do open up wider discussions about healthy eating in general:

The National Food Strategy report, which also suggested a tax on sugar and salt, was commissioned by the government in 2019 but was met with lukewarm reception from the prime minister in recent weeks, who claimed he wasn’t “attracted to the idea of extra taxes” as a means of tackling obesity.

He says: “While medicalising fruits and vegetables emphasises their importance, we wouldn’t want them to be seen as intimidating, or encourage the mentality that eating fruit & vegetables should be a chore.

It comes after figures from the Food Foundation revealed that over 20,000 people in the UK die prematurely from low vegetable diets, and a further 64,000 deaths are attributed to poor overall diet in England alone.

“We are producing high quality, delicious meals, packed full of fresh ingredients. Our key difference is convenience, and that’s where I think we can really help make a difference.

However, even the idea of prescribing fruit and veg has been met with some hostility from people online who believe the proposals “medicalise” healthy eating and take agency away from people.

Being able to fill your freezer with preprepared organic meals allows our customers to eat meals that are quick, satisfying and packed full of delicious ingredients.” 49

A SCANDINAVIAN ADVENTURE IN BERGEN. by Rebecca Underwood, Travel Journalist

living quarters, business premises and storage areas and outside, high above the roofs, tall cranes hovered over every building ensuring that the vessels docked on the waterway could be unloaded and loaded with ease.

Prior to the outbreak of Covid19, I visited Bergen, known as the gateway to the fjords, which nestles between seven mountains and is Norway’s second largest city, located in Hordaland, on the western Norwegian coastline.

For a deeper understanding of Hanseatic life take a stroll along to the Hanseatic Museum which opened in 1872 and is housed in one of Bryggen’s oldest wooden buildings. Furnished in the style of the 18th century, it has retained its original interior and provides an intriguing insight into the life and work of the Hanseatic merchant.

This charming World Heritage City instantly captivates visitors with an abundance of natural beauty, a fascinating history and it’s the ideal spot for a Scandinavian adventure. Founded by King Olav Kyrre in 1070 and only four years after the end of the Viking era, Bergen rapidly developed around its bustling harbour and became a major centre for trading seafarers. Prior to Oslo emerging as Norway’s capital in 1814, Bergen was the Norwegian capital in the 13th century and it prospered greatly due to maintaining exclusive rights to negotiate European trade. The Hanseatic League (the German medieval guild of merchants) dominated Baltic maritime trade along the northern European coastline and in 1360 opened an administrative centre on Bryggen’s wharf. At that time there would have been around 30 timber buildings with each one housing several trading firms over two or three stories. Each property provided

For those seeking the highest level of comfort and service, the ideal place to stay is the Opus XVI, a member of Small Luxury Hotels of the World. Located on the quiet plaza of Vagsallmenningen, the property is owned by the descendants of Edvard Hagerup Grieg, the renowned Norwegian composer and pianist. This grand, historic building dates back to 1876 and once housed Bergen’s largest bank. The spacious main floor features granite walls and soaring marble columns and the many decorative details demand the utmost admiration.

Our Travel Accommodation options include classic, superior and deluxe rooms and a choice of suites. The double-storey Peer Gynt suite, named after one of Edvard Grieg’s masterpieces, measures 69 square metres and reflects a fusion of contemporary style with classic elements. The living room includes a large dining area with comfortable seating and elegant drapes and the bedroom features a king size bed swathed in luxurious linens and plump pillows. The spacious bathroom offers under-floor heating and an excellent rainfall shower, which, for those of us who take a while to recover from a deep slumber, is just the ticket. Hotel amenities include complimentary WIFI, an in-room tablet for guests to use, and an impressive mini-bar crammed with drinks and snacks. Following a hearty buffet style breakfast and with most attractions within walking distance I set out to explore the city.

of quirky boutiques, trendy cafés and busy restaurants dotted along the wharf. Consider stopping off and sampling Fårikål; Norway’s national dish, which is a delicious mutton stew layered with cabbage and served with potatoes or you may prefer the Stekte Pølser, which are fried sausages accompanied with a selection of vegetables. For those who love seafood, head for Enhjørningen, a unique fish restaurant located on Bryggen. Housed in a narrow 18th century building, which has been restored, it offers a wonderful view of the waterfront, excellent service and the menu features some truly mouth watering dishes. Norway is the world’s second biggest exporter of fish and a visit to Torget fish market, a three minute walk from Opus XVI, is not to be missed. Visitors are encouraged to admire the display and sample the products, which includes fish cakes, salmon, calamari, seafood salads and of course fish and chips. Wander around the harbour and you will spot the Bergenhus fortress, which is one of the best preserved castles in Norway. Be sure to visit the royal hall, known as Haakon’s Hall after King Håkon Håkonson. The hall dates back to 1260 and is Norway’s biggest medieval building now used for official functions and banquets.

In 1979 Bryggen, was recognised by UNESCO as a World Heritage Site and today the vast majority of Bergen’s visitors flock to the brightly coloured wooden houses along the waterfront. These days painters, weavers and craftsmen toil away in their workshops enticing passersby to stop and admire and purchase their artistry. There are also a number

Our Travel Another popular attraction is the defence tower, known as the Rozenkrantz Tower, which was built in 1270 by King Magnus VI. In the 1560’s, Erik Rosenkrantz, the commander of the castle, integrated the tower into a larger structure and today it is recognised as the most important Renaissance monument in Norway. Wander around the foreboding dungeon, which, it is said, was used from the 1400’s until the1800’s and as you climb up the dark ominous stairwells, imagine those unfortunate enough to be incarcerated in such a place.

After this experience you may wish to take a breath of that fresh Scandinavian air. Take a short stroll along to Øvregaten Street, which is Bergen’s oldest street. The Fløibanen, the city’s funicular railway, which dates back to 1918, is Bergen’s top attraction and you’ll be rapidly transported to the top of the Floyen mountain; 1050 feet above sea level. Passengers are richly rewarded with spectacular sweeping views of the city below and it’s the perfect spot for hiking along the marked paths. Or take the vintage shuttle bus from the fish market and then hop onto the cable car and soar to the top of Mount Ulriken, where you can admire the panoramic views of the city, the surrounding mountains and the stunning views of the fjords.

Opus XVI Exterior

For those who prefer to view the scenery at ground level, make your way to Zachariabryggen, adjacent to the fish market. Board the White Lady for a leisurely cruise around the harbour or embark the catamaran, which offers a three hour cruise to Mostraumen, where the fjord narrows and the vessel is surrounded by steep mountains. On the return voyage the vessel sails around Osterøy and pauses at Heskjedalsfossen; a beautiful waterfall. Passengers are presented with a sample of the water, which the crew collect. This experience is by far the most leisurely and comfortable way to view and appreciate the beautiful surroundings savouring every moment of your Scandinavian adventure.

Our Pets

HAVE AN AWESOME AUTUMN AND KEEP YOUR PETS SAFE By Libby Williams MHAO AHDip Animal Healer and Holistic Therapist www.libbywilliams.co.uk info@libbywilliams.co.uk 07966 639671 As the days start to shorten and the light nights become a thing of the past, our environment changes and the fallen leaves create a carpet of golden browns for us to admire and our pets to run through and play in.

You can also turn the TV up slightly and close blinds and curtains to help take their mind off what’s going on outside. It’s a good idea to walk and feed your pet before it gets dark and if you have a dog that needs to go out in the garden make sure that you stay with them, not only to reassure them but to keep them safe. Make sure you check that the gates are closed as dogs may bolt and if you are opening doors ensure that your pet is securely inside and can’t dart out.

Fallen leaves bring new hidden dangers for our furry friends, there can often be a lot of debris under leaf litter such as broken glass. Cuts and grazes are quite common in the Autumn and although they are often painful for your pet it won’t always be apparent that they are hurting. Its good practice to check your dogs and cats once they come in from a walk, check their pads and in-between their toes as well as a good once over to make sure that they haven’t got anything stuck in their fur or skin.

Hedgehogs and other wildlife hide underneath piles of leaves and wood so if you build a bonfire, do so just before its lit to ensure that there are no animals hiding inside. It’s not just wildlife to consider as cats and other pets can sneak in too, if you leave the bonfire unsupervised then check it again before lighting.

Ticks can become active again in the cooler Autumn months and Fleas hide in fallen foliage so can easily be picked up by your cat or dog, keep a regular watch for any unwanted guests that your pet may be hosting.

There’s lots of fun to be had at this time of year, with Halloween, Bonfire night and other seasonal activities. Why not brighten up your pet’s day too by coming up with some fun indoor games to play with them, get the kids involved too. You could make them some fresh fun nutritional treats, there’s lots of ideas on the internet. Not only will they be a treat but will also provide you pets with some extra vitamins to help support their immune system as winter approaches.

Kids often like to play with Conkers and you yourself may have even put some in your house to keep spiders away. Conkers and Acorns are actually toxic to dogs so take care if you have them in your home and when you are out and about, especially if you have a puppy because they like to explore the world with their mouth. Fireworks can be very scary for some pets, loud bangs, flashing lights and other unfamiliar sounds. Fireworks actually create a vibration; humans aren’t aware of this but animals can feel them and it can be terrifying for some. Keep your pets indoors, make them a little den, a safe and comfortable place to hide.

Have an awesome autumn and keep your pets safe! If you are ever concerned about your pet always consult your veterinarian, it’s a good idea to have an annual check up to ensure that your pet is fit and healthy. 58

KIA XCEED 1.5 T-GDI ‘4’ The market place for Crossovers and SUV’s continues to remain extremely strong and Kia have now introduced a 4th member to the Ceed family, with over 4 million already been built, they have introduced a newly designed and engineered vehicle for European markets, writes Bob Hickman.

My XCeed, as tested, came equipped with a 1482cc, 4-cylinder engine, it had a maximum power of 158bhp, a 6-speed manual gearbox was the chosen transmission and this allowed for a top speed, where legal, of 129mph, the 0-60 gallop could be obtained in marginally under 9 seconds. Combined fuel figures were quoted at 44.8mpg but the computer suggested that I had achieved 38mpg in varied driving conditions and circumstances covering in excess of 300 miles

Extensive testing has taken place with the new XCeed due to the awful condition of European roads, including the UK, and this does show in the handling characteristics of the vehicle.

The XCeed was a pleasant companion to be ensconced within, the steering gave good feed back, it was always reassuring to drive. The extra height being an SUV is always a bonus feature.

It is an 8 model range with 3 engine choices and 3 trim levels. There are considerable external differences but the purists would need to look carefully to appreciate fully. 62

Our Motoring The interior has been worked considerably, nice touchy feely plastics have been incorporated. I was impressed by the level of comfort facilities within the vehicle and the first time in a good many years I experienced not just electric warming seats but an electric cooling system within the seats, it has to be experienced to be believed.

The vehicle will adequately accommodate 4 adults and with a boot space of 426 litres with the rear seats left in place and 1378 litres if they are folded down, it is a vehicle that will accommodate your luggage. I particularly liked the power tail gate, it is one of those features until you have actually been utilised one, you wonder how you managed without.

Kia has followed the majority with a full suite of driver aids and safety features, it includes a blind spot collision warning, lane keeping assist, hi-beam assist, driver attention warning, forward collision avoidance assist, hill start assist, the list is quite endless and I do wonder where it will end and when the autonomous driving car will become more and more acceptable. There were certain features I am sure many owners would actually want to disengage,

If you are looking for a vehicle that comes with literally all the bells and whistles you could ever ask for, then the XCeed has to be high on your list. When you add in the wonderful 7-years, 100,000 miles warranty, that Kia have attached to the vehicle, you have to believe in the product. The vehicle as tested had an on the road price of £28,880.

All together now: ‘Costs

really matter.’

Siobhan Record Our Lifestyle’s Financial Expert

The late, great Jack Bogle – the founder of Vanguard and the grandfather of index investing – left us all with a simple mantra that he repeated almost every time he wrote an article or gave an interview: ‘costs matter’.

both sets of managers (index and non-index) capture the same market returns before costs – a reasonable position to take, in aggregate, as winners and losers have to net out to zero – and calculated the differential wealth outcomes over time between the less costly index funds and the more costly non-index funds. The seemingly small difference of 0.85% makes a huge difference to what an investor’s retirement might look like. At the end of 40 years – not an unreasonable investing horizon – if the high-cost strategy ended up with £1 million, the lower cost strategy would have £410,000 more to spend, all else equal. A staggering difference - I know which I’d rather have!

In day-to-day life, we tend to make a connection – largely correctly – that you get what you pay for. If you need a good lawyer, it will probably cost you. If you want the paint to last on your windows, employ a decorator who costs more because they will spend more time prepping the surfaces and uses better quality products. Buy cheap, buy twice! Yet when it comes to investing, broadly speaking, the exact opposite applies. The more you pay in ongoing charges to invest in a fund, means, on average, there is less money left to put in your pocket.

As investors we should not lose sight of the fact that we put up 100% of the capital and take 100% of the risk of doing so. Surely, we deserve to pocket the bulk of the returns on offer.

It would be easy to select a good fund if all you had to do was pick the most expensive manager but this might set you back significantly more than 1% a year. If you reverse that strategy and pick the cheapest fund, it is likely (although never guaranteed) to be a better option.

Out of interest when did you last check what your charges are?... ‘costs really matter!’ If you are interested in knowing more about how I work, our low-cost investment philosophy and you have investments of over £100,000 why not give Jo a ring on 01562 745730 to arrange a no obligation 30-minute free meeting in our offices.
