Happy New Year - 2018 By Jane de Weijer : Make Space Interiors ltd: Contact www.makespaceinteriors.co.uk

Happy New Year ! 2018 is here. A New Year, new trends, new colours and new themes in the Interior Design world. All good so far!

created with colours, accessories and furniture currently out there on the High Street. Its a New year and a little Scandinavian philosophy never goes amiss.

Do you love bold colours? If so hold onto your hat because, after years of restraint, you are going to love the bright ,strong shades and contrasting colour schemes that will most definitely be coming to a store near you this year. Combining these with soft metallics and iridescent shades they really will let you introduce as much or as little colour into your home as you wish, bringing your home bang up to date without scaring the cat.

Fresh year, fresh start ! Enter ‘Lagom' Its January, Christmas and the excesses of the festive season are over and its time to kickstart 2018, follow through with those resolutions and rethink philosophies. Naturally the Scandinavians have a state of mind and being that reflects the contentment and balance that life could have should we adhere to it welcome Lagom.

This month I will be exploring three of the 2018 colour trends and looking at how they can be

Lagom is a way of living. In Sweden living within 'lagom' describes having 'not too much of oneor-the-other, but more a 'just right’. Hygge is a moment, Lagom describes a way of living. Pronounced ('la' like 'bar', 'gom' like ‘prom'), it directly translates as ‘just the right amount’, not too much, just the right amount. After the seasonal excesses a paired down, simple and balanced approach to all we do seems a good way to start 2018. So its sustainability, its simplicity and its balance. All good so far. What does the Lagom room look like? Its about well chosen accessories, ‘Less is more’ is definitely the mantra. Look to recycle and refurbish as sustainability and balance are key words. The environment and our impact on it is an essential element of Lagom. Create Neutral spaces generate a calm and resourceful approach and focus on give and take .

Trends 2018

interpreting on the sample boards. Looking at the key trends within the forecast:

We have to start the year by looking at what is coming .

Dulux Paints, www.dulux.co.uk , adapt the directions and trends identified by Pantone. Interpreting the overall trends and delivering colour predictions and trends that they believe will appeal to their customers for the year to come.

The Pantone Colour Institute is the Holy Grail for all designers across all disciplines and Executive director and colour trend forecaster, Leatrice Eiseman leads the way. "People need to stop and smile, Design doesn't always have to be so serious!"Intense colours seem to be a natural application of our intense lifestyles and thought processes these days," So its an introduction, after a few seasons of moody greys ,charcoal shades and neutrals, its time for some colour .

I am looking at three of their colour palettes and the opportunity to use the colours. Escapade means foreign travel. Miami, global adventure! Luxury travel and sun drenched tones. Well if it can be recreated in the front room, why not?

I am going to look at three of these trends and

Here pink is used with teal blues , marble and metallics to add the glamour. The way to use pink this year is to introduce those rich edgier tones , that 70’s salmon pink hue is making its come back combined with strong colours think glam!

Projects from PAINT IT by Peta Green of Paint It A Touch of Paint................. The Brief

AFTER

Peta received an enquiry to hand paint fitted 1980’s style wardrobes in both bedrooms. Peta’s customer had recently downsized to a bungalow needing a lot of TLC which meant a total interior refurbishment. The brief was to open up the bedrooms filling them with light, by painting the dark and old fashioned wardrobes.

BEFORE If you would like to speak to Peta contact her on 01952 670805 to arrange a FREE of CHARGE home consultation or visit: www. paintitfurniture.com.

The Solution! Peta discussed the requirements over the telephone and was able to provide images of work done previously with other pine bedroom furniture, dining room table and chairs which helped the customer visualise the transformation. Working together helped the customer be confident in her choice of colour to paint the wardrobes. A colour was chosen and a decision was made to replace the existing door pulls with new ones, they looked perfect. Using their 7 coat paint system Paint It set to totally refurbish the bedroom wardrobes, bringing them bang up to date. The overall look had totally transformed both bedrooms, especially the smaller bedroom, giving light and warmth, a perfect result for the customer with the Paint It’s can do approach to their work.

Wood Effect Tiles

Wood-effect tiles have seen a monumental transformation of recent years. The timber purists amongst us would never have considered choosing imitation over the real thing, but such is the quality and exactness of today’s printing techniques that wood-effect tiles have become difficult to distinguish from their natural counterparts.

in living rooms and bathrooms. They would make a perfect backdrop for mirrors, cabinets and other accessories you are considering installing. Due to the latest printing technology, it’s often difficult to distinguish wood-effect tiles from the real thing. It has enabled manufacturers to recreate the same shade variation and grain structure that you would expect to come from natural wood on a ceramic or porcelain tile. How you choose to lay your wood-effect tiles however is totally down to personal preference. Many consumers lay them with staggered joints or in a herringbone pattern which helps create a classic and realistic finish. These patterns not only have timeless charm, but it will look great in any design scheme – whether contemporary or traditional.

But what is it that makes them so appealing? The main benefit of wood-effect tiles as opposed to natural wood is that they will require little maintenance. Not only are they exceptionally easy to clean, they will also keep on looking their best for years to come as they are really hard wearing. This means you can be relaxed and happy that your investment should see little wear and tear over time. Many consumers are worried about the effect of moisture when it comes to natural wood as it can sometimes warp and rot, but with tiles being water resistant they are a great option. Ceramic and porcelain tiles can also be used with underfloor heating to create a cosy radiant heat throughout the room.

There is a huge range of wood-effect tiles now available, many of which in different shades and finishes. From contemporary designs with modern clean lines to those with a traditional rustic finish, the choice is endless. Wood-effect tiles can be used throughout the home and are ideal for conservatories, hallways, kitchens and bathrooms on both walls and floors. They are perfect for making your home stand out with a stylish, authentic yet cost effective design.

Wood-effect tiles can also be used on walls, allowing consumers to create a beautiful feature wall. A trend that’s really catching on, especially

Cancer (June 21-July 21)

Capricorn (December 21 - January 19)

Your energy levels are running high as that intrepid and fiery planet Jupiter becomes prominent in your astrological houses. This means that you could be jumping around like Father Christmas chasing his reindeer.

You seem to be very much in charge as your well-reputed skills of leadership begin to show through. Others could benefit greatly from your firm hand of direction. You might just enjoy being the leader of the pack!

Leo ( July 22- August 21) Take heed of what others might say. It looks as if you need to know where you stand in relation to others. Try not to rise to the bait placed by those with whom you may work or associate.

Aquarius (January 20 - February 18) Unexpected attention of an emotional kind could make this a really romantic period of time. Love is in the air, but will you step up to the mark and accept this new-found affection?

Pisces (February 19 - March 20) Every bored moment that you may feel whilst you’re in the ‘old routine’ will be equalled by a positive experience created by you discovering skills and talents that you probably never thought you possessed. This could be the start of something big.

Virgo (August 22- September 22) What a great mentor you really are, giving good advice and encouragement to others. In terms of satisfaction, the rewards are great. Perhaps now you can achieve peace of mind at last.

Libra (September 21- October 22)

Aries ( March 21- April 20)

You seem to have gained the Midas Touch as Lady Luck seems to be smiling on you more than ever. Money may come easy, but true love may take just a little bit longer.

Take no notice of nosey-parkers and prophets of doom. The position of the planet Venus in your chart indicates an optimistic, fruitful time ahead when you can truly be in touch with your inner feelings and dreams.

Scorpio (October 23- November 22)

Taurus (April 21 - May 20)

That period of disruption and chaos is all but over. All should be plain sailing now towards a period of prosperity and inner strength. Now perhaps you will learn that life is for living and not just existing.

Rely only upon that which you have tested and know to be bone fide. Getting involved in other people’s crazy schemes and ideas could lead you up the proverbial garden path.

Sagittarius (November 23-December 20) Nail your colours to the mast and do not allow others to cloud your judgement. During the next few weeks you have the opportunity to let go of all those negative factors of your life. Maybe it’s time for a knees-up.

Gemini (May 21- June 20) The way that the financial part of your chart is reacting, you should be able to tiptoe through the next few weeks without a care in the world. Money changes everything.

Your Food & Drink

Have a super food New Year By Mike Whitehurst If you don’t get what the fuss around superfoods is all about, to put it into lay mans terms - superfoods are ingredients that you add to your diet so your body can absorb all the beneficial nutrients and anti-oxidants that they have on offer - there’s no automatic magical transformation in how you feel but they will keep you healthier in the long run. Forget about starting new fads and resolutions just start adding a few super food items to your shopping list and drop a few ready meals. Your not eating healthily if you choose the lower fat version, the only way to stay healthy is to eat food prepared by a human. Factories use too much stuff that just isn’t good for you. 1 knorr vegetable stock jelly 100g feta cheese a handful of walnuts a few leaves of kale and calvolo nero a few sticks of asparagus bennett and dunns smoked rapeseed oil maldon sea salt freshly cracked black pepper

METHOD Pour the beetroot juice into a heavy bottomed sauce pan and bring to the boil then add the stock jelly and dissolve. Add the pearl barley and cook until the pearl barley is soft with a little bite to it. Add extra water during cooking if the pan dries out a little. Whilst the barley is cooking get a pan of boiling salted water on ready to blanch the greens ( the greens only takes about 45 seconds ). Slice, wedge or dice your beetroot and mix into the barley then spoon into your bowls, top with the greens, crumble the feta over evenly and crush the walnuts over and finish with a sprinkle of Maldon sea salt and a drizzle of Bennet & Dunns rapeseed oil. Serve with sour dough bread or some roasted baby new potatoes with garlic and rosemary. If you need to appeal to the meat eaters in your life then you can add confit duck leg or a 4 oz fillet steak to the dish but that would be a shame because its very tasty as it is.

Beetroot Barley Risotto with Super Greens Feta and Walnuts Serves 2 - Takes about 20 minutes using precooked beetroot

INGREDIENTS 300g of beetroot - buy fresh and roast or buy pre cooked 500ml of beetroot juice 150g of pearl barley

Set Lemon Yoghurt with Blueberries, Honey and Nuts

Food & Drink

METHOD Gently warm the milk to 40oC then pour into 2 earthen ware / clay pots - if you don’t have these then use what ever you have. Add 1/3 tsp of natural yoghurt and 1/2 tsp of lemon juice to the warm milk and stir in. Leave somewhere out of the fridge to set for about 6 hours in a warm room they will take longer to set in a cold room. Once set you can chill them in the fridge for a few hours. I’d say this is better being done the day before you want to eat them. Once chilled top with dry fried or roasted unsalted pistachio nuts a generous handful of blueberries, drizzle with honey then grate lemon zest over the top and serve with a few oat biscuits.

Serves 2 - Takes about 6 hours setting time

INGREDIENTS 300ml of full milk 2/3rds teaspoon of natural yoghurt 1 tsp of lemon juice lemon zest 2 tsp of honey - warm spoon first to help honey run a large handful of blueberries a large handful of pistachios oat biscuits

Education

The happiness of our children lies at the heart of everything we do at Winterfold. Good manners, a cheerful smile and a sense of purpose are seen in every pupil. Each child has the opportunity to excel academically and is encouraged to develop a sense of adventure and achievement in many different directions.

Winterfold is a non-selective school and there are no formal entry requirements or tests. We accept children at any age, provided we have a place available. We believe that we have a duty to educate any child who wishes to come to us, if we feel that they will benefit from their time at the School.

The excellent facilities at the School cannot fail to impress. More than this, is the family, friendly feel of the School which is central to our ethos. Here, the children are learning for life and we aim to give them the opportunities and environment that they need to help them grow in confidence and become engaging, successful and resourceful young people. The children love coming to School and are very proud of their achievements. At the heart of our success lies our dedicated and highly professional staff.

We take pride in the fact that we truly know every child and ensure that they achieve their potential in every aspect of school life. Our children develop a sense of purpose, determination and confidence due to the wide variety of activities in which they take part. They leave us as well rounded individuals who have become good citizens of the future. Don’t just take our word for it, come and see for yourself. #4 The Bellagio, Las Vegas In a city full of incredible five-star hotels, it’s difficult to single out the most luxurious, but this iconic Italy-inspired hotel deserves to take the top spot. While everyone knows about its magical dancing fountains and impressive casino, the Bellagio still has many surprises to discover, including a beautiful conservatory and botanical gardens, a fine art gallery and a magnificent lobby complete with colourful flower-strewn ceiling and huge golden horse sculpture. This hotel also has five inviting pools, and lucky ticket holders can see the mesmerising Cirque Du Soleil ‘O’ show, a stunning acrobatic display set in and around the water.

The young and young at heart will also love the 141-acre waterpark and amazing aquarium that Atlantis is famous for.

#5 Royal Palm, Mauritius This world-famous hotel – the first in the Caribbean to become a member of The Leading Hotels of the World - sets the standard for luxury on this heavenly island. With just 69 suites, it has an exclusive feel, and service is flawless thanks to staff outnumbering guests at a ratio of three to one. Keen to make the most of its prime beachside spot, the Royal Palm boasts its own boat house offering a range of watersports and excursions. And a visit to the Clarins Spa, built around a pool and cascading waterfalls, will leave you in a state of complete bliss for the remainder of your holiday.

Delightful Dublin, the captivating capital of the ‘emerald isle’ by Rebecca Underwood, Travel Journalist

Cathedral, which dates back to 1030 and was founded by Dúnán, the Norse king and first bishop of Dublin. During the Victorian era the building underwent extensive renovations and even today it is difficult to distinguish between those parts which are medieval and those that have been restored. Nevertheless, the striking building is clearly one of Dublin’s gems and offers much to be admired. The crypt, which is open to visitors, is the largest in England and Ireland, and constructed from 1172 to 1173 it contains a number of fascinating riches including a set of candlesticks and a tabernacle, which were used in 1690 when King James II fled England, sought refuge in Ireland and set about defending his throne. During this time he attended High Mass in the cathedral and the ornate interior reflects Dublin’s rich and colourful history.

Dublin, located at the mouth of the River Liffey, which flows into Dublin Bay and the Irish Sea, is the capital of the Republic of Ireland and a truly enchanting city where the locals enthral visitors with an infectious sense of humour and an exuberant zest for life. Dublin was once a Viking settlement and became Ireland’s major city following the Norman invasion, and prior to the Act of Union in 1800 Dublin was the British Empire’s second major city. In 1922, after the division of Ireland, it was recognised as the capital and today attracts millions of visitors keen to experience a little Irish charm. To appreciate Ireland’s greatest cultural treasure head for Trinity College, located on College Green in the centre of the city, and view the Book of Kells; the world’s most famous medieval manuscript. Permanently displayed in the college’s magnificent Old Library, dating back to the 18th century, the elaborately decorated 9th century Book of Kells is a beautiful illuminated copy of the four Gospels of the New Testament and it is an absolute masterpiece. To view another of Ireland’s medieval treasures take the short stroll along to Christ Church

Your Travel For ardent culture vultures, Dublin’s Castle is a short stroll away on Dame Street. In fact, the city of Dublin gets its name from the Black Pool – ‘Dubh Linn’ – which was once part of the castle’s garden. The castle stands on the ridge of a strategic site at the junction of the River Liffey and its tributary the Poddle, where, it is said, that the original fortification may have been an early Gaelic Ring Fort. Part of a Viking fortress, which once stood on the site, remains, and is on view to visitors at the ‘Undercroft’.

Another of Dublin’s most popular sites is the Guinness Store House, which attracts more than a million visitors every year. The ‘black stuff’, dates back to 1759, when Arthur Guinness signed a 9,000-year lease for an annual rent of £45 for the disused brewery at St James’s Gate. The world renowned Irish stout is made of water, barley, hops and yeast and visitors are welcome to ‘pull the perfect pint’ following precise instructions from a Guinness representative. The glass must be held at a 45 degree angle and the pourer must wait for an exact period of 119.5 seconds before topping off the froth. Be sure to visit the Gravity Bar and perhaps partake in a refill whilst admiring the panoramic view of the city in between sips. Clear your head with a brisk walk along O’ Connell Street, named after the 19th century nationalist Daniel O’ Connell, leader of the movement for Catholic emancipation. This will lead you to the O’ Connell bridge spanning the River Liffey and the promenade known as Batchelor’s Walk, which leads to the charming Ha’penny Bridge. Built in 1816, it is known as the Ha’penny due to the half-penny fee pedestrians once paid for crossing it.

Today, visitors eager to encounter Irish hospitality gather at Temple Bar; a cosmopolitan area offering an extensive choice of galleries, restaurants, cafes, bars and shops. A leisurely stroll along the pedestrianised cobble-stoned streets is a real treat and a tipple or two in any one of the many pubs will quench the most persistent thirst. There is no shortage of charismatic characters, and whilst sipping on an Irish coffee, we were serenaded with a rendition of ‘I’ll take you home again Kathleen’ and another local risked breaking a limb with his idea of ‘what real Irish dancing should be and not what that young whippersnapper Flatley has exported’!

For a real treat for all the family make your way to Dublin Zoo, which opened in 1831. The zoo is a registered charity, which is focused on raising awareness to threatened species and it generates essential funds for conservation. Located in Phoenix Park, it is home to over 400 animals including a pride of Asian lions, Asian elephants, giraffe, rhino, gorillas, chimpanzees and orang-utans. The daily feeding times attract children and ‘grown ups’ alike with many squealing in delight at the antics of the sea lions

Should all that frivolity take its toll, a tranquil spot for ‘al fresco’ dining can be found at Carluccio’s, located on Dawson Street. The service is excellent and the linguine pasta with squid, mussels and prawns with garlic, herbs and chilli is delicious. After a glass of Gavi Delfini Piemonte we were ready to continue with our exploration of the city.

Your Travel and penguins. Another treat was in store when we stopped off for a bite at the zoo’s famous Meerkat’s Restaurant. Whilst dining, we became aware of a family of inquisitive meerkats peering at us through a large glass wall and a lasting mutual fascination ensued. There is a wide choice of hotels in Dublin but for those seeking outstanding levels of comfort and service, the luxurious Merrion Hotel, birth place of the 1st Duke of Wellington, is just the ticket. The property consists of four inter connected Georgian town houses and is located in the city centre on Upper Merrion Street. We opted for the spacious and stylishly furnished Lord Monck suite, which offers a gorgeous view of the landscaped 18thcentury style gardens, and features original rococo plasterwork with a curved, boat-shaped ceiling adorned with elaborate motifs of flowers and birds. The king size ultra comfortable bed swathed in crisp Egyptian linens ensured a deep slumber and we took advantage of the comfortable seating area after arduous days spent exploring the city. The elegant and grand Merrion Hotel reflects Dublin’s Georgian heritage perfectly and offers a relaxing retreat where guests are welcome to relax in the beautiful drawing rooms adorned with Belgian tapestries, sparkling chandeliers and priceless works of Irish art. I took a dip in the indoor infinity swimming pool and visited the steam room and the spa. For an outstanding dining experience, the Merrion’s light and airy restaurant, the Garden Room, presents modern Irish cuisine. I opted for the delicious succulent Irish stew, which was served with aplomb.

The Merrion Dublin Should you wish to go a little further afield, Hugo’s restaurant is a short stroll away on Merrion Row. The service is first class and the menu is inspired. Consider sampling the slow braised South Glenn beef, served with white onion, herb mash and a Guinness purée. And for our evening tipple we headed back to Bar No. 23 at the Merrion Hotel and relaxing in our plump comfortable chairs we ordered two flutes of champagne and raised our glasses high in solidarity to one of Ireland’s favourite sons; James Augustine Aloysius Joyce, who once said ‘When I die, Dublin will be written in my heart’. ‘Top Tip’ - Flights: To experience the warmth of Irish charm in-theair fly Business Class from Heathrow to Dublin with Aer Lingus. Opt for Advantage, which offers priority boarding, advance seat selection and lounge access. For more information visit aerlingus.com ‘Top Tip’ – Airport Transfers Book a private transfer in Dublin with Blacklane for a reliable, punctual, first class service. Your Wedding

Wedding Fairs

So, he has finally popped the question and you have agreed to marry him! Congratulations, but soon it dawns on you that actually there is so much to do and very little time to do it. There are so many options these days that the chances are that you will have so much spinning around in your head that you won’t know where to start. A dress for you, a suit for him, venue, food and drink. Table plans, invitations, flowers, cakes not to forget outfits and gifts for bridesmaids and ushers. There really is so much to think about that half way through the preparations, it wouldn’t be surprising if you wished you had hired a wedding planner! Thank heavens for the wedding fair, everything you could possibly think of to do with wedding all in one place.

many different styles and designs from cakes to confetti and favours to flowers. Some fairs are better than others and it would be worthwhile asking around to see if others have found the fair you are thinking of attending worthwhile. Look on FaceBook or the fairs website to check out the number of suppliers that are showcasing. In turn see if you can find the showcasing companies’ websites as this will give you an indication of the quality of the businesses attending. It may be that you have something very specific in mind say a certain style of floral display or a unique table favour. At a good wedding fair there should be plenty of options available that will give you ideas and options and also an idea of cost.

Many couples planning a wedding visit at least one wedding fair as it is an event where different companies in the business of supplying goods for weddings come together to showcase their products and services. Everything that you can think of that is concerned with the wedding day will be available to see and sample and most importantly the providers themselves will be there. If you are short of inspiration or looking to make your budget stretch that little bit further then wedding fairs are great for viewing

Some fairs can be more expensive than others, for example The National Wedding show is £15 a ticket in advance with ‘on-the-door-tickets’ starting at £20 per person. This can add up especially if you are taking your bridesmaids along too. However, this is a large and impressive show and if you simply want to gather as many ideas as possible then it is well worth a trip even if you come away only know what you don’t want!

55

Your Wedding Local or regional wedding fairs tend to be less expensive but will be smaller in comparison. Don’t let this put you off though as the local wedding fair will have suppliers that are based nearer to you. For some things it is sensible to use a company that is close by so that if you have a few meetings (or tastings is the case of cake or catering suppliers) then you don’t want to have a long journey which will take up half of your precious day off. Likewise think of the delivery of the goods to your home or venue. A local supplier is more likely to deliver free if charge if it is a short trip and they are less likely to get snarled up in traffic on the big day if the journey isn’t too far. The great thing about attending the wedding fair is that you have a great deal of experienced and professional wedding specialists all under one roof. Take time to speak to as many suppliers as you can. Take samples, get brochures and have a chat about some of the ideas you have. They will be able to help you develop your ideas, suggests different ideas and options around your particular theme or plan. You will be able to see samples of work such as wedding stationary or floristry and get a rapport with the professional that will be working with you to fulfil your design. Weddings are such

emotive events that it is important to like your supplier or at least feel that you are on the same wave length. Of course you will want to speak to the professionals in more depth, so simply take the company’s contact details and make an appointment to visit them. It is also good to see their shop or outfit so you can be assured of the quality.

56

Your Wedding

Venues are also now offering showcase days where they exhibit suppliers that they use on a regular basis. This can be really useful as the companies that work there frequently, will know exactly how things works and will be able to offer you a service that they know will suit the venue. Take photography for example, the photographer who has worked at a particular place on many occasions will know the best locations and hidden places to enhance your wedding portfolio. If they know the venue and have a good relationship with them then they may even be able to offer you things that might be unavailable to companies that haven’t worked with the venue before. Added to which if the venue is recommending them then you have the added security that the supplier is reputable and will do a good job as they wouldn’t in any way want to risk that relationship.

have a sale and sample rails and you can pick up a real bargain. Don’t forget that things can be altered or shortened if you find a good seamstress so don’t think it has to be a perfect fit. It is worth asking the particular company if in fact they do alterations. All in all the wedding fair can be a great source of inspiration and for those short of time a one stop hit of everything you can think of to do with weddings and probably things that you haven’t thought of too!

And of course there is the bargain hunting side of wedding fairs. The larger supplier may have deals or discounts that can be snapped up on the day. Many companies exhibiting wedding and bridesmaid dresses and accessories will

Detox your Wardrobe by Emma Russell –Stylissimo, Image Consultancy, www.stylissimo.co.uk New Year, New You! How many times have we heard that phrase? But with the beginning of each new year we do feel that its time to freshen everything up, detoxing, cleansing and tidying everything from our homes, to our bodies and our wardrobes. If you were lucky to have some amazing new additions to your wardrobe courtesy of Christmas, maybe its time to cleanse your wardrobe and take out the old and bring in the new and create a fresh new wardrobe for 2018. With all my clients I always advise a seasonal wardrobe detox, and the New Year is always a great time to have a little sort through and work in those new shiny pieces and create fabulous new looks with current pieces in your wardrobe. To help you, here is my…

Stylissimo Guide to the Perfect Wardrobe Detox. First, spend time going through your wardrobe and having a good trying on session. It may take a few hours so squirrel yourself away, put the kids in front of a movie, and consider this an investment of time in yourself. By trying on your clothes and experimenting with your wardrobe you will save time and money in the long run, and you’ll have fun creating new exciting looks especially at this time of year when money is tight, and the sales are not providing much style inspiration. During your little personal style session try your clothes on, mix and match pieces that you may not normally wear together to see what works and what doesn’t. Document those things that do work, take a photo on your phone and create your own style portfolio. It’s a great reference point for you to go back to on those busy days rushing to get the kids out for school and you to work so that you can avoid your own wardrobe crisis. Quickly flick to the photo and bingo, you’ve got instant style inspiration. While you’re trying on your clothes be ruthless and be honest, if it doesn’t fit or you’ve not worn it in two years or more my advice is to get rid of it. Declutter the items that you know you won’t wear and pack away any summer items that will come in handy later in the year. By doing this you will create space in your wardrobe and you’ll be able to ‘see’ your clothes so much clearer, this will make getting dressed each morning that bit easier. I’m not suggesting you remove all of the old clothes, if an item works with several pieces in your wardrobe and you can create several looks using that one item, you are creating a capsule wardrobe which is a positive. If an item fits you well and most importantly it makes you feel good when you wear it I say it’s a keeper, clothes should make you feel positive about yourself and if the item does that then it should stay. The next thing to consider is your lifestyle, by only keeping what you need and will truly wear instead of what you wish to wear in a fantasy lifestyle you will naturally narrow down the items in your wardrobe. Ensure that the items that you keep reflect your lifestyle and are functional for your needs, you can still be a stylish school run mum or someone that works from home. To do this ensure that the items you keep during your wardrobe detox can mix and match into both causal and work/ dressier occasions. My top tip here is to choose one statement piece, be it a jacket or a dress or those fabulous trousers, keep everything else within the look more pared back and simple to allow the statement piece to shine. By keeping the other items within your look simple and from the same colour palette you can create several looks. The use of similar colours allows you more flexibility when mixing and matching items as you can draw out certain colours from say a patterned dress to pull a look together.

58

Your Fashion I've chosen my staple pieces to create a few example looks I’ve chosen a statement military jacket, good quality blue jeans (you could add in a black pair too if you wish), a wear everywhere dress (a dress that can be styled for different occasions), a reliable chunky knit and some basic pieces like boots, bags and a white trainer will create many versatile causal looks. Shopping Trip – The jacket is the statement piece of this look with complimentary gold detail on the cross-body bag and continuing the military vibe with the boots. By keeping the shirt and jeans simple allows the jacket to be the centre of attention.

Monsoon Dita Military Jacket

Barbour Skinny Jeans

House of Fraser Maison de Nimes Shirt £39

Debenhams - Faith Boots £69

Marks & Spencer Autograph Kate Saddle Bag £79

Lunch with the Girls – By using the same outfit and switching in the dress worn as a tunic top with the jeans underneath, you give the dress a casual feel and the gold detail on the boots, bag and jacket pulls out the copper tones in the pattern of the dress.

House of Fraser Maison de Nimes Dress £59

Day at the Office – The dress can be worn more formally too, on its own with black opaque tights worn with the leather slouch boot makes it a more office appropriate style.

Dune Salina Boots £170

59

Your Fashion School Run – take the jeans from earlier and add in this chunky knit with a rucksack that can carry everything you need from wipes to snacks, add a bit of glam with these glitter stripe trainers and you’ll be the envy of all the mums with your stylish school yard glamour.

Debenhams Jasper Conran Jumper £40

Barbour Skinny Jeans

House of Fraser Label Lab Rucksack £49

New Look Trainer £29.99

Coffee and Cake with the school mums – switch the jeans for the wear everywhere dress with the chunky knit over the top and bare legs and you’re starting to move into a transitional look as the months grow warmer showing the versatility of the pieces can be worn later in the year too.

Once you’ve detoxed your wardrobe and you can see which pieces you need to buy to complete your capsule wardrobe and to take those pieces from winter through to spring, you can hit the shops to buy the items that will compliment and work together with your current looks. Save time and money and benefit from expert style advice, Stylissimo offers everything you and your wardrobe needs from personal style sessions to wardrobe detox’s.

As massive fans of Agatha Christie, Nick & Royston love to step into the world of opulent style and glamour of 1920`s and 30`s, so lunch aboard this luxury train was a delight. Christmas Lunch was served in the stunning Art Deco dining carriage and the highlight of the day was the gastronomic four course dinner and served with Sommelier`s choice of wine. Winter Fun and the Danger of the Sun! Airports throughout the UK will be bustling as millions of Brits jet off this winter to tropical, sun-drenched, idyllic destinations or for the more adventurous, a ski resort that gives us the best of both worlds – snow and sunshine… after all we look and feel better with a ‘TAN’ right? Whilst we feel helpless against other forms of Cancer, Skin Cancer is in fact one of the only Cancers we can prevent ourselves, so why don’t we? Our skin is our body’s largest organ that performs a variety of vital functions so why is it that the last thing on everybody’s mind when we think about our health and wellbeing? Had I known what I know now, I would have made skin protection a high priority throughout my teenage years/early 20’s. As many do, I grew up hating my skin, being made fun of for being so pale and wishing that I was more like other girls. I also believed tanned skin looked better, being taunted because of my pale and freckled complexion as a teen I began visiting tanning salons and sunny holiday destinations to maintain a ‘base tan’ all year round. To be honest, I have long since accepted the fact that I don’t nor ever will harbor a tan! It’s simply something my skin/pigmentation is incapable of accomplishing - on holidays I believed that burning was all part of the sun tanning process– sound familiar?

“Skin cancer is the UK’s most common and fastest rising cancer and is now one of the biggest cancer killers in 15-34-year old’s” The Facts: • Over the last twenty-five years, rates of Melanoma/skin cancers in Britain have risen faster than any other common cancer • Over 80% of all skin cancers are caused by over-exposure to the sun and/or sun beds • Sunbeds are not safe • 7 people currently die each day as a result of skin cancer in the UK! • ALL skin types can be damaged by UVR Studies suggest ‘We should be simply avoiding the sun and exposure to UV light, simple’, 15 to 20 minutes per day of unprotected sun exposure, without skin reddening or burning should be sufficient for most people to produce the required Vitamin D levels. Factor 50+ sunscreen should be the norm.

66

Don’t make skin cancer a part of your holiday this season… Although I am one of the lucky ones having been treated quickly, years of over exposure and lack of knowledge has left my 27-yearold skin damaged beneath the surface, beyond my years (given age 60-70 by my dermatologist), prematurely aged and now scarred which could have all been easily prevented. Prevention is better than cure… ‘Don’t Bake, Just Bottle’ There are some fantastic, cost effective self - tanning alternatives on the shelves, I now use St Moriz Mousse and Dove Tinted Moisturiser.

Thank you to all those involved who have shown support.

20 New Year’s Resolution Ideas

The New Year is slowly nearing, and with the holiday season already upon us many people are indulging in retrospection and re-evaluating some of their life choices. New Year’s resolutions are the perfect opportunity for all those who have failed to start making the changes that they said they would make next week, next month, or perhaps when winter starts. Well, now’s your chance to sit down and prepare a list of important lifestyle changes you want to make, and being the charitable and caring bunch that we are here at Lifehack, we’ve decided to give you a bit of help – because since the majority of people fail to stick to their resolution, you’ll need all the help you can get.

1. Get in shape

Losing weight is the top resolution for the English, and combined with “exercise more” and “stay fit and healthy” it is something that over a third of the population wishes to achieve. It’s easy enough to start an exercise and diet program, but the trick is to find a decent one that will give you steady results and will be easy to stick to in the long run. Have a look at these tricks, hacks, exercises and mistakes to avoid to make the best our of your resolution.

3. Stop procrastinating: The biggest barrier that keeps most people from reaching their goals is the desire to relax and do something fun instead of working hard. Once you get used to procrastinating it’s difficult to snap yourself out of it, so you’ll need to put in a lot of work to change this bad habit. There are many useful tips out there to find your way to stop procrastinating. There are also tools which can help you achieve this task.

2. Start eating healthier food, and less food overall: This is usually an extension of the previous resolution. Switching to a healthier diet can be incredibly tricky when we are surrounded by

Your Health 4. Improve your concentration and mental skills:

instead of staying hunched over the computer. It’s even more fun if you share your activity with friends and family.

People have been trying to find ways to improve their focus and cognitive capacities for thousands of years, and most ancient civilizations had some combination of mental exercise and herbal medicine to help them reach this goal. Today we can use anything from apps to ancient meditation techniques to boost concentration and hone our mental skills. If you go through with this, you will be able to control your mood, learn faster and have an easier time solving problems.

7. Become more confident and take some chances: If you are confident other people notice it, and it is much easier to have your opinions heard, ask people out on dates and get ahead at work. A good dose of self-confidence will help you lead a much happier life overall. Don’t hesitate to get some input on ways to boost your confidence.

8. Earn more money: Even billionaires are always looking for ways to earn more money, and we common folk can definitely use an additional source of income to make life a bit more comfortable. Fortunately there are plenty of options available, like having sidejobs, working as a freelancer or using the internet to your advantage.

9. Become more polite: Good manners have always been an important part of a civilized society. They make it easier to connect with others, avoid offending people and will ensure that others perceive you as a good and trustworthy person. So know the etiquette, be prepared or other manners in other countries, deal with rude people in the right way and learn how to say no.

5. Meet new people: When we get stuck in a rut, we usually end up staying at home most of the time, missing out on a lot of interesting opportunities for networking and having fun. Meeting new people can be beneficial to your mental well-being and help your career, so don’t be afraid to get out there and make some friends. Overcome your shyness, get some knowledge and go and get to know new and interesting people

10. Reduce stress: They say that stress is one of the biggest killers out there, and it can have a very destructive effect on your relationships as well as your health. It may be an unavoidable side effect of our hectic modern lifestyles, but it can be effectively managed with the help of useful, unconventional and easy to practice tricks.

6. Become more active: Some people don’t really have a big weight problem, and they even get some exercise a few times a week, but they just sit around the most of the time at home and at work, which can have a negative effect on their posture and health. In that case, all you need is to find ways of moving around more throughout the day

11. Learn to be happier with your life: Even those that are in decent shape, make a good living and have stress under control can still be unhappy. It takes time and patience to learn how to find joy in the little things and not to let problems bring you down.

69

Your Health 12. Get more quality sleep: With big TV’s, computers, smartphones, tablets and all sorts of gadgets with glowing lights and beeping alerts, it can be hard to get enough sleep at night. You should be gunning for at least 8 hours of sleep a night, and there are fairly simple ways to achieve this number if you make use of science and everday hacks.

13. Give up cigarettes: A bit of bad habit that a lot of people don’t know how to kick, smoking will not only endanger your health, but can burn a hole in your wallet as well. Just be prepared to dedicate a lot of will power to giving up cigarettes once and for all.

17. Have better sex: Any healthy relationship requires a good deal of intimacy, and sex can actually help keep us mentally and physically healthy. The idea is to make it a fun and rewarding experience, and this is something that comes with practice and exercise.

14. Watch less TV: The average person wastes a lot of time in front of the TV, time that could have been better spent developing skills, learning or keeping your body active. Once you manage to cut down on TV time, you will realize just how long and productive a day can really be.

18. Become tidier: There are a lot of slobs out there who can’t really get their stuff organized, and a cluttered desk or chaotic home will negatively affect your productivity and even your mood, so it helps to clear the clutter, clean your house and lead a tidier and more organized life.

15. Read more: Books are an excellent way to gain a lot of knowledge on a huge variety of topics, and are also a great exercise for your brain. It’s not that difficult to go through 20 or more books in a year – you only need to make it a habit, discover your type of books and find a bit of time for reading here and there.

19. Learn how to dress with style: The way you dress can say a lot about you, and wearing the right clothes can make you seem powerful and confident, which in turn can help you land a job, get promoted, and catch the eye of a lovely guy or girl. No matter if you’re male or female, know the dresscode and live with style.

16. Find a significant other: We all need someone to hold at night, talk to and share our deepest secrets with, but finding the right person is a matter of trial and error. We need to go out and get to know a bunch of potential partners before we can find the one that we can get along with really well. Get inspired on your way towards love by these tips on the best places to meet people, asking someone out, and having an amazing and original first date.

20. Spend more time with the people that matter: There is just too little time in this life for us to waste it on insincere, duplicitous and toxic people. We should focus on the people who we care about deeply and who care about us, as this is the best way to stay happy.

Getting the

balance back into your life

Hilary Sims firmly believes that if you have a problem in life, it’s always good to talk about the issue rather than bottle it up inside. That’s one of the reasons why the Stourbridge wife and mother became a counsellor. “I have always been the one in the group that people talk to, so it was a natural progression to move into counselling. I have always enjoyed working with people to solve problems and issues.” Hilary’s counselling business is called “Life Balance - Counselling Just For You.” She works with young people and adults on a variety of issues. She is a registered member of the British Association for Counselling and Psychotherapy and an Accredited Member of the National Counselling Society and adheres to their Ethical Framework for Good Practice in Counselling in order to ensure client safety. She has an Diploma in Therapeutic Counselling Skills and a Diploma in Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (CBT). “I am currently working on a Certificate in Couples and Family Counselling Skills, which will give me the opportunity to continue to offer couples counselling in my private practice,” said Hilary. Her counselling work covers problems with anger, anxiety, bullying, family breakdown, stress, low self esteem, bereavement, depression or

any other issue causing unnecessary suffering. Working from Stourbridge, Hilary can provide a safe confidential space to explore these issues but she points out: “I am not here to offer advice or to tell you what to do.” “I will listen and offer non-judgemental support and let you explore different ways of dealing with the situation. If a problem is left unsolved, it can manifest into something bigger.” Hilary uses the Humanistic, Person Centered Approach which allows the client to achieve their full potential. She uses Cognitive Behavioural Therapy which is a collaborative intervention which involves looking at our own thoughts and feelings about an issue. “We will discuss things in the therapy room, which you can practice between sessions,” said Hilary. “We can then measure the changes that this practice has bought about. I can also offer Solution Focus Based Therapy, which is a short term therapy focussing on the solution to a specific problem.” Hilary is also able to offer counselling as part of an Employee Assistance Programme. Cosmetic Surgery Patient Has Confident Outlook A patient is focusing on the future with confidence after undergoing eyelid surgery with one of West Midlands Hospital’s top cosmetic surgeons. Helen Eburne has heaped praise on consultant Guy Sterne for the blepharoplasty procedure which she says has transformed her appearance and improved her self-esteem. After Guy Sterne was recommended to her by a lady she met socially, Helen decided to book in for an initial consultation with the experienced surgeon to find out more about what the procedure involved.

Helen Eburne is over the moon with her blepharoplasty procedure.

She was so impressed with Mr Sterne that she decided to go ahead with the surgery at the Halesowen-based private hospital.

She said: “You hear negative stories about cosmetic surgery and the fact that I was having surgery on my face, not on another part of my body which can’t be seen, meant that I had to be extremely confident that the surgeon I chose was going to do a good job.

Helen was thrilled with the outcome which she says has changed her whole outlook and her relationships with her family and friends.

“I thought the lady who told me about Guy Sterne either had the best genetics in her family or that surgery had transformed her. She was very confident in Guy’s ability and thrilled with her own outcome.”

The 43-year-old, of Solihull, said: “My motivation for surgery was to improve how I felt I felt I looked. “The knock on effects of that included improving my self confidence and in turn my personal relationships.

Helen believes that she definitely made the right choice of hospital and surgeon for the surgery which she had set her sights on for so long.”

“I wanted to go ahead with eyelid surgery because I had spent time and money on creams and non-surgical treatments but I realised that no amount of creams were going to change my genetics.”

She added: “I would have no hesitation in recommending Guy Sterne. I had a great experience from the initial consultation with Guy, through to the day of the surgery when all the nurses were so friendly and helpful.

Mr Sterne delivers a range of cosmetic surgeries including breast augmentation, reduction and uplift surgery, facial cosmetic surgery, eyelid surgery and abdominoplasty (tummy tucks).

“They also looked after my husband so well when I was having the operation and kept him fully informed which was great.

Helen believes it is important to build a good rapport with a consultant and trust them whatever cosmetic surgery people are considering.

“Guy Sterne is an incredible surgeon and I really wish I had known about this procedure and had it done years ago.”

Amalgam or composite? for most other materials.

Amalgam

However over recent years there has been some concern over the safety of amalgam fillings as they contain mercury and so many patients choose to have composite (tooth coloured) fillings instead or even have old amalgam fillings removed and replaced with composites. Unlike amalgam fillings, composites actually bond to the tooth and in some cases mean that less tooth structure is removed during placement of the filling. They are tooth coloured and are set hard with a light at the time of placement, so they can be carved to look very realistic.

Composite

What is a filling? A filling is a material used to fill a space or cavity in a tooth which has usually developed due to tooth decay or simply fractured. Amalgam fillings have a good track record. They have been placed for years quite successfully with many patients having them for 20 years or more without having to be replaced. They are strong and hard wearing. They can be a very cost-effective way of filling a tooth as the material is relatively inexpensive and the time taken to place the filling is less than that taken

If you have old amalgam fillings that you don’t like the look of or you’ve noticed any cavities recently why not give us a call and book in for a check-up. We’ll be happy to go through your options.

Mind Your Posture: Computer Sense At home, at school or college, at work or on the move, more and more of us are spending large parts of our day using a computer. When sitting and concentrating on the screen for long periods, we may not be aware that the position we are in could be harmful to our spine. Many patients with neck and back problems, caused or aggravated by poor posture when using a computer, are seen at The Tettenhall Road Chiropractic Clinic.

• Forearms should be flat and your elbows level with the desk. • Take regular breaks, walk around and stretch a little. Never sit at the computer for more than 40 minutes. The portability of Laptops makes them very convenient and flexible to use, but it is tempting to use them in situations where you might be in an uncomfortable or potentially pain inducing position.

Essential Adjustments Always take time to adjust your chair, particularly if you share your computer with others.

• When on the move with a laptop, use a rucksack design laptop case, carry it on both shoulders and adjust the straps so that the bag is held close to your back. • If you must use a laptop on your lap, don’t sit for long periods doing this, as you are looking down at the screen with your head unsupported.

• Adjust your seat so that your feet are flat on the ground, your knees are bent, and with a slope from your hips to your knees. Your eyes should be level with the top of the computer screen. You may need to raise your screen on a stand. • Relax when sitting in the chair, making sure you have your bottom against the seat back and with yours shoulder blades touching the back of the chair.

If you have neck, back or shoulder pain, consult your GCC Registered Chiropractor at Tettenhall Road Chiropractic Clinic.

Your Pets & Garden

Stronger for Longer Think your pet may be too old for treatment? Not necessarily...

by Kate Slack, Group Head of Nursing, Blacks Vets

As we get older, our health needs change and we may need to carefully consider the pros and cons of different clinical routes. There may be distinct benefits to some options but will they outweigh any potential risks associated with treatment? It’s a delicate balance to strike and one which requires some thought. The same is true of our pets; to help our older four-legged friends stay in tip-top condition, we need to make sure that we continue to provide them with the very best care whilst managing the complexities that age can bring. The good news is that there is lots that can be done to make clinical procedures safe and effective. It’s understandable that many pet owners are wary of putting their older pets through procedures which can carry risk, even if the results can bring substantial improvements to a pet’s overall health. This needn’t be the case! It’s far better to help our pets enjoy the best quality of life at any age rather than resigning them to an uncomfortable old age. In this article, we’d like to share with you how the team here at Blacks use our expertise to manage older pet care that helps provide the very best outcomes.

DENTAL CASE STUDY part of our checks, we strongly recommend that the pet has an initial blood test to establish organ function levels and our decision to proceed is informed by these results. As Finn’s results showed his levels were good, we booked him in for treatment at a time and date convenient to his owner.

Meet Finn. He’s a beautiful Collie Springer cross and at 16 years old, is certainly no spring chicken! As a member of our brilliant Protect My Pet Club, Finn receives two free nose-to-tail health assessments every year and it was at one of these appointments that our vet team noticed dental damage that would require a scale and polish. Left unchecked, dental disease can leave pets in pain and cause infection, which can have serious consequences, particularly in older pets. It is often the case that pets in later life are more likely to need dental work after many years of general wear and tear, so it is scenario that we are very familiar with. As a scale and polish often requires a General Anaesthetic, we have procedures in place to make sure that mature pets are fit and well. As

On the day… On the morning of the procedure, Finn arrived at 8am and was met by one of our nursing team who ensured that he was welcomed in a calm and reassuring manner. He was settled into a kennel and made comfortable, whilst one of our nurses talked through the process with his owner. As advised, Finn had not eaten after 8pm on the preceding evening in order to further minimise risk during his time under anaesthetic. Once settled, he was given a small sedative together with fluid therapy which we start early in the procedure when treating older pets.

78

Your Pets & Garden appetite returned and eating became more comfortable for him thanks to the thorough clean we were able to give his teeth. His breath certainly smelled sweeter too!

The scale and polish was carried out by an experienced vet and Finn was also monitored continually by one of our fantastic nurses. Once completed, the vet assessed the true state of Finn’s teeth and would have advised if any extraction work was necessary for loose or badly damaged teeth. This possibility is always discussed with clients before their pet is admitted, so that they can decide on how they would like the vet team to proceed should the situation arise. Fortunately for Finn, he didn’t need any further work and he was able to move into the recovery phase. Our nursing team make sure that our mature pets are recovered using oxygen and fluid therapy together with heat pads and warm blankets for a comfortable and safe experience. Once Finn was fully awake we offered him a small quantity of chicken to help settle his stomach. His owner was able to pick him up later that day and he could return home to fully recuperate. Though a little quiet at first, after a full day, Finn had regained his old bounce and was clearly feeling fit and well again. His

Your Pets & Garden

A New Year, A New Season Trim old leaves away from Hellebores, making it easier to see the flowers and prevents the spread of disease. If its mild, mulch plants ready for spring growth in a few weeks time. Although we haven’t had much snow over the last few years it might not be the case this year. If the snow and hard frosts do arrive make sure vulnerable plants – Hebe, Phormium, Cordyline, Palms and Tree Ferns are covered with fleece.

Seed potatoes usually arrive at the start of the New Year, weather permitting. We stock over 45 different varieties, including several of the Albert Bartlett range and old favourites like Rocket and Arran Pilot. This year we have the new variety ‘Carolus’ which has a red eye and is ideal for baking, roasting and mashing but more importantly for the gardener is said to be both foliage and tuber blight resistant. Once you get them home, put them to chit (allow shoots to form), egg trays are ideal for this, place them in a light, cool and frost free environment.

January and February are the ideal time to wash and disinfect your greenhouse. Do this on a mild day to prevent the risk of cracking cold panes of glass. Having a clean greenhouse at the beginning of the season ensures that seeds and plants get off to a good start.

Use winter wash on your fruit trees on a mild day before the buds start to burst, this will clear up any pests and their eggs left overwintering on your trees. Make sure you have a grease band wrapped round the stem. This is an important step to carry out every year, but more so now as there are no fungicides available on the market to treat diseases of fruit trees such as scab, rust and mildews.

Don’t forget our feathered friends, especially if the weather is poor – we’ve always got peanuts, seed, mealworms, fat balls and feeders in stock. Clean off bird tables regularly and remember to put out fresh water daily.

Designer and Television Presenter turns the spotlight on the best garden fencing solution in the UK today.

COLOURFENCE

VIRTUALLY MAINTENANCE FREE

Nothing lasts forever. Particularly timber fencing. That’s why Colourfence (with its 25 year guarantee†) is popping up in gardens all over the UK.

Protect against Winter, prepare for Spring! I’ve wasted countless days and a small fortune, trying to repair and maintain tired wooden fences that looked dreadful and always required yet more work. Discovering Colourfence has changed things forever! It’s scientifically tested and rated to ensure when professionally installed it can withstand wind gusts of up to 130mph. This year when my neighbours are facing post-storm repair bills and maintenance, I’ll be relaxing in the warm as Colourfence is virtually maintenance free. As Colourfence offers a lasting solution to fencing woes, it’s easy to see why many regard it as the premier steel fencing solution on the market. Colourfence won’t rot and it resists weather that quickly damages wooden fences; it has none of the drawbacks of wood but plenty of added benefits and it’s better value too! High quality AND great

How to Perfect the Classic Winter Garden Winter brings many challenges for gardeners; keeping the borders looking nice once you have removed the annuals and pruned the perennials, fertilising the lawn, raking leaves and storing and treating garden furniture. Achieving that Christmas card look with the delicate dusting of snow or the sparkle of frost is a lost cause if the garden looks wind ravaged and tired. For 16 years, ColourFence has been working with customers to reduce the impact of the changing seasons on gardens across the UK. ColourFence in Wolverhampton and Dudley explain how.

How much can fencing really change the look of a garden? It depends on the garden, but in most residential gardens the fencing is one of the most prominent features, particularly in Winter when plants die back. A poorly maintained fence makes the garden look scruffy and uncared for. With traditional wooden fences, this can be a coat of paint or a panel that has blown loose in the wind.

Can ColourFence be fitted in any garden?

When is the best time to put up new fencing?

Every fence we fit is custom designed so there is a solution for most spaces. We would only fit the product where the solution is right, if there are any concerns, we make the customer aware when we do the initial site survey. We have even created fenced areas within gardens to hide bins and prevent them blowing away.

No matter how careful you are, it’s hard to install fencing without disturbing plants so when the borders are emptier is a great time. The fence is a splash of colour and a backdrop for Spring flowers without the need to treat or paint. The key is not to leave it too late; we have had calls where high winds and heavy rains have stressed fences to the point where they become a hazard to the occupants or passers-by.

What do customers like best about ColourFence? It’s hard to say, it’s very low maintenance and strong. It’s secure, which customers love - our panels lock into the posts and are hard to scale with no easy footholds, plus the gates have locks not bolts. But in all, I think we get most feedback on our service and no pressure approach, which are key for us.

Is ColourFence really ‘weather proof’? ColourFence has been tested to stand up to wind gusts of up to 130mph and the unique Colorbond steel won’t rust, peel, rot or warp. Many customers see the product as ‘weather proof’ as storms don’t leave a huge repair bill and they don’t need to paint the fence for 25 years.

83

The main thing is that whilst the fencing is important to the look of the garden, it isn’t the bit that people really want to spend time on. So let us sort the fence and you can keep the bird feeders stocked and plant the bulbs in time for spring!

Make pensions a priority in divorce By Harbinder Gosal Alarming statistics have revealed that women could be missing out on up to £5bn a year after failing to take their partners’ pension pot into account during divorce proceedings.

A pension is like any other asset a couple owns, jointly or individually, such as a house, savings, or shares. It forms part of the overall financial picture that has to be taken into account when agreeing a financial settlement.

Although property and savings are usually a priority when it comes to dividing assets, it seems more women are starting to recognise the value of a claim on their spouse’s pension with more pension sharing orders being issued.

A pension can also be one of the biggest assets so it shouldn’t be seen as not worth pursuing. Values have surged thanks to stock market increases, and changes in legislation have opened the door to greater flexibility in accessing pension pots, making them increasingly important in divorce negotiations.

Harbinder Gosal, a senior Associate in FBC Manby Bowdler’s family team, has this advice:

Many people often think, wrongly, that only private pensions can be shared and are unaware that awards can be made against a state pension.

Recent research from Scottish Widows said only nine per cent of couples wanted a fair share of pensions and 48 per cent of women didn’t knowOur what happened to pensions on divorce. specialist legal advice covers:

Award winning family legal service delivered Award winning family by leading experts

Securing a pension sharing order is particularly important for couples divorcing later in life. Women often give up work or work part time so they can raise a family, which may compromise their pension contributions so securing a pension share is significant.

This echoes our experience, as many clients Divorce & Separation don’t know what happens to a personal pension Partnerships whenCivil they split up. Winter Tyres Winter tyres are not just effective in extreme snow conditions, they provide a decreased braking distance on icy roads, improved braking in wet conditions and provide better emergency braking on wet, icy and snow-covered roads.

We offer a wide range of winter tyres and will be able to advise you on the right ones for you. Not only that, whilst using your winter tyres, we offer a ‘Tyre Hotel’ service. Your summer tyres will be labelled and safely stored on our premises until you need them again.

For these reasons, winter tyres are highly recommended for use in temperatures below 7°C, which in the UK is around 150 days of the year. Advantages of using Winter Tyres:

It’s important to ensure your car is in full working order, especially as the weather turns colder and the nights draw in. That’s why we offer a FREE winter health check and brake check.

• Shorter stopping distances • Improved performance and safety • Resistance to aquaplaning • Increased tyre life

For more information on winter tyres, including our tyre hotel and our FREE checks, please contact Simon, Mac or Emma at HiQ Wolverhampton on 01902 420234.
