Its that time of year again, when you will be decking the halls with boughs of holly and baubles and whatever else takes our fancy.

Finally this time of year, when it is so dark out there those lights we have on inside, the lamps that have sat idly there not being switched on too often, take on a whole new level of importance as without them we would all be sitting in the pitch black. I will be looking at current trends so should you be looking to light up that dark corner, look no further!
In the house and outside ’tis the season to be over the top. There are two rules, wrap it and light it up. Its personal too. Whether you love the traditional Victorian Christmas, still high in the popularity stakes since Prince Albert first bought over and lit up that tree for Victoria, through to that Scandi chic look, with an abundance of grey felt, plywood decs and big woolly knits. Or maybe its craft all the way with handmade baubles and hand crafted cards? Whatever your preference just embrace it, it will all be going back in a box and into the loft soon.
I’m dreaming of an OTT Christmas Making a statement is what Christmas interiors are all about. I love these large murals that can be put on a feature wall and are going to make that impact. Why not? Remembering that Hygge trend back at the start of the year with all that Scandinavian balance and cosiness? If that is your Christmas theme this year combine nordic blues and creams and some of those on trend pastel shades. Or go for broke with the traditional theme the choice is huge so focus in on your theme when you are out there.
This month I am looking at bringing together some ideas for you to create the Christmas wonderland that we all want, and will leave us, when we are hoovering up the pine needles on January 6th, with great memories. I spend a lot of time as an Interior Designer sourcing accessories and researching new trends so if I can help you out this Christmas I will. Christmas Eve METHOD Whisk 3 egg yolks with 150g of caster sugar until thick and creamy then pour in 300ml of full fat milk and 600ml of double cream followed by 400ml of spiced rum, grate a tsp of nutmeg into the drink and whisk lightly to mix well. Set aside in the fridge until ready to use. When ready simply pour one out for everyone and grate a little more nutmeg on top.
SALMON PUMPERNICKEL TOASTS SERVES 6 INGREDIENTS Sliced Pumpernickel bread Smoked salmon Mascarpone Dill fronds Seaweed caviar (black pearls) Lemon

3 Organic free-range eggs - as fresh as possible - separated 600ml double cream 200ml of full fat milk 150g of caster sugar 350ml of spiced Captain Morgans rum Nutmeg
METHOD Cut the pumpernickel slices into squares or small rectangles and toast in the oven for about 8 minutes on 180oC. Allow to cool then spread thickly with mascarpone, slice the salmon into squares and roll each square up into a roll then place on the mascarpone. Top with seaweed caviar, fresh dill and a squeeze of fresh lemon juice. Serve with the egg nog.

EQUIPMENT Heavy based pan Knife Chopping board Potato ricer Fork Peeler Fine grater
METHOD Bake the potatoes until soft, allow to cool a little and take the flesh out of the skins then pass through a potato ricer into a bowl adding the 2 flours and a pinch of sea salt. Work into a dough adding a little water if needed. Now fold in the 60g of parmesan and turn out onto a floured work surface. Knead the dough until smooth and roll into a long sausage shape. Cut into small dumplings and pull towards you pressing down gently with a fork creating the ridge effect. Place the dumplings in the fridge while you make the sauce. Put half the walnuts, garlic cloves, pumpkin seeds and 30g of parmesan into a food processor and blitz to a rough consistency. Now start adding a drizzle of oil to bring everything together creating the pesto. Season and set aside.
CHESTNUT GNOCCHI WITH FIG AND WALNUT PESTO SERVES 6 INGREDIENTS 3 baking potatoes 90g of chestnut flour 30g of plain flour 1 tsp of Maldon sea salt 60g of Parmesan grated 6 figs 12 walnuts 3 garlic cloves 2 banana shallots peeled and sliced 1 tbsp of pumpkin seeds 30g of parmesan Extra virgin olive oil Bunch of flat leaf parsley Unsalted butter Maldon sea salt
Blanch the chestnut gnocchi in salted water until floating and drain. Melt a nob of butter in a pan and once foaming add the shallots to soften, then the gnocchi tossing to brown all over then add the cream to coat the gnocchi for a few minutes. Turn out into a wide coupe style serving bowl, spoon chunks of pesto.

on Binningerstrasse. Set in lush, landscaped parkland it is easy to navigate and the 600 species include Kangaroos, African elephants, lions, crocodiles, giraffes and rhinoceros. The antics of the monkeys and apes enchant visitors for hours and don’t miss the pelicans and seals devouring huge numbers of fish during their afternoon feeding sessions.
For those keen to take a break from the relentless stresses of life in the fast lane, consider a long weekend in Basel. Located on the banks of the river Rhine, where the Swiss, German and French borders convene, Basel is a captivating city of contrasts, cosmopolitan yet traditional, with a vibrant culture and an impressive number of museums, attracting over 1.5 million visitors every year.
For our own dining experience, we hopped on the no. 34 tram at Zoo Dorenbach, disembarked at Universität, and headed for the family-owned and managed Restaurant Zur Harmonie, located on Petersgraben. The property has an intriguing history and is mentioned as an inn on records dating back to 1807. The interior features antique wood panelling and a beautiful lead glass window, created by Auguste Philippe Matisse. This restaurant specialises in Swiss, Italian and French dishes and I sampled the succulent ‘Café de Paris’ sirloin steak, served with pommes allumette, which was presented with much aplomb. Accompanied by a glass or two of Monferrato Rosso Lanimo 2009, it is a first class dish.
Art lovers should head for the Kunstmuseum (Museum of Fine Arts), which features three venues containing the largest art collection in Switzerland. View extensive paintings and drawings highlighting the works of artists active in the Upper Rhine area and dating back to the early 15th century. Wander around the fabulous collection of Holbein masterpieces and admire the stunning works of Rembrandt, Rubens, Manet, Monet, Gauguin, Cezanne and Van Gogh. The contemporary collections include works by Andy Warhol, Brice Marden, Mimmo Paladino, Walter Dahn and Siegfried Anzinger. Another popular attraction is Basel Zoo, located

An extravagant buffet style display features fresh, homemade vegetarian and vegan salads, hot dishes, soups, freshly pressed juices and a choice of desserts. I sampled the scrumptious quiche with a crispy salad, followed by pistachio ice-cream and it was first rate. or two. If you love to rummage for a bargain, the Flohmarkt, held every second and fourth Wednesday of the month at Barffüsserplatz, is the place to be. Bargain hunters gather to search the stalls, crammed with goodies galore.
The Basel Minster, once a Catholic cathedral and now a reformed Protestant church, is also among the most popular tourist attractions and is listed as a heritage site of national significance. Take a stroll around the busy market square and admire this imposing building, the red sandstone architecture, the multi coloured tiled roof, the soaring twin towers and the cross shaped intersection of the main roof. Built between 1019 and 1500 it is a magnificent example of a mesmerising blend of Gothic and Romanesque styles. Energetic visitors are welcome to climb the steep staircases within the towers in groups of two or more.
When you are in need of a sugar rush, Lackerli Huus, located on Gurbergasse, is a paradise for a sweet tooth. Sample the Basler Leckerli, a rectangular piece of gingerbread and a veritable feast of honey, hazelnuts, almonds, candied lemon and orange peel and a dash of spices. Leckerli, which dates back to the 15th century, was a source of nourishment for church dignitaries and it is simply divine. Swiss chocolate fans should visit Xocolati, situated on Glubengasse, it’s a charming chocolate boutique where you will find more than 700 exclusive chocolate products as well as over 50 varieties of hot and cold drinking chocolate. For an absorbing insight as to how the affluent people of Basel lived in the 18th and 19th centuries, visit the Haus Zum Kirshgarten. This 18th century property was once a silk merchant’s private residence, and the family wealth is evident. The museum features 25 rooms, lavishly furnished with period pieces. The permanent exhibitions include ‘Basel – symbols and Images’, which gives an insight into the history of Basel from the Middle Ages to the present time through the displays of images, symbols and badges of identity used by past rulers and their subjects. ‘The Basel Dance of Death’, another popular exhibit, is a sixty metre long mural, once painted onto the wall of a cemetery within a

Visitors seeking an exceptional place to stay in an excellent location will discover that the Gaia Hotel, located on Centralbahnstrasse, is a short stroll from Basel’s main transportation hubs and it offers the highest levels of comfort and service, a complimentary in-room mini bar and free Wi-Fi. This impressive property, which is family-owned and managed, opened in 1929, and provides spacious and contemporary accommodations with charming traditional touches. We stayed in a superior, airconditioned; double room, measuring 36 sq. metres, which featured an espresso machine, a large flat-screen TV and a spacious en suite bathroom. The beds, swathed in crisp, white linens, were ultra comfortable and ensured a deep and peaceful slumber. Our organic buffet breakfast, served in the hotel’s elaborate dining room, which has retained its rich traditional wooden panelling, was absolutely outstanding. The service was excellent and it was a pleasant surprise to find a hotel that caters for vegans and diners requiring gluten free produce. Hotel facilities include an excellent spa, which features a Kneipp trail, a Finnish sauna, a treatment room, an inviting relaxation area, and rejuvenating rain showers.
Adagio Aparthotel Accomodation with rowing machines, a self service laundry, a business centre and complimentary WiFi. We relaxed in a 1 bedroom apartment measuring up to 35 sq. metres, which provided a welcome retreat after a day of arduous explorations. The lounge area offered a comfortable, plump sofa and an LCD TV with more than 35 channels and the kitchen included a microwave with a grill, a ceramic hob, a dishwasher and all amenities required for self catering. We opted for the hotel’s excellent buffet breakfast, which included a wide selection of fresh breads and pastries, yoghurts, cold meats, cheeses and a selection of hot dishes. After such a sumptuous feast, we burned up a few calories by taking a stroll along the banks of the river and then hopped on one of the four ferries, which sail between Basel’s five bridges spanning the river Rhine. Whenever you decide to visit, you can be sure that the locals will offer a warm welcome. We were truly enchanted with the beguiling beauty of Basel. Royston and Nick’s Diary Well, Royston has done it again! Legendary not only for his hairdressing skills, but also his parties, especially his annual Christmas staff party has always been the salon`s highlight of the year. However, Royston decided this year he was going to celebrate another incredible year at Royston Blythe Salon group with a weekend in Marbella with all his team.
Nick and Royston have travelled all over the world, so when asked to describe the day, his comments were ` this was the best party I have ever been to`, that will give you some idea of how fabulous the day was.
As a reward of everyone`s hard work, loyalty and commitment, this year has brought continued success, as winners at the Lòreal colour trophy and Finalists again in the British Hair Awards. They decided to whisk them off for a team building weekend at the Red Party, Nikki Beach 2017. The salons closed early on Saturday and dressed to impress in Red Royston Blythe t- shirts, the team flew out from Birmingham airport and arrived in Puerto Banus just in time for cocktails. Sunday was the exclusive Red Party, the most anticipated event in the Marbella calendar and was a complete sell out months before. The team were VIP guests and treated to a delicious lunch accompanied with Dom Perignon Champagne. The entertainment was mesmerizing with the musicians, dancers and the singers and it wasn’t long before Royston lead the way with dancing on the tables.
Monday was a day of rest, with a combination of retail therapy and massages on the beach, so everyone was fully recovered to return back to work. The weekend was a great chance to have fun together, make new friends and a fabulous opportunity to express what is special about the Royston Blythe family. Christmas Planting It’s unbelievable how the time flies as we find ourselves at the end of another season. It’s important to remove dead foliage from around roses – only put on the compost heap if it’s not diseased. This year seems to have been particularly bad for blackspot on roses, due to humid damp weather conditions for much of the summer. The atmosphere is so much cleaner these days without factories sending out plumes of smoke which in the past would have kept roses free from disease because of the sulphur content in the smoke. Borders can then be mulched with compost, well-rotted manure or bark. While it’s mild and there’s no frost in the ground you can still plant any bare root hedging or fruit trees. For some winter colour in the garden why not plant shrubs such as the Viburnum fragrans or Bodnantense Dawn, Skimmias, Gaultherias or Leucothoe. One of the best Christmas plants is the Poinsettia. It gives instant colour in a room. They like good light during the day and a warm room, never in a draught. Only water when the soil is dry and never stand in water for longer than 10 minutes.
Freshly cut Christmas trees will be available from the end November. When you get it home, place in a stand or pot that can be kept moist, as warm temperatures and dry air inside the home make the tree absorb water very rapidly. Keep away from hot radiators, open fires and TV sets. This also applies to rooted trees, especially if you’re planning on planting it in the garden after Christmas.
Cyclamen are ideal for cool rooms. They need good light and only water just as the foliage begins to wilt, make sure that any excess water is removed from saucers after 15 minutes. Also available are Christmas cacti which produce beautiful red, pink, orange or lavender flowers. Azaleas will flourish in either a warm or cool room and are very easy to keep, requiring plenty of water.
When choosing your Christmas tree, don’t forget to have a look inside the garden centre. Most like our own centre put on spectacular Christmas displays. There’s always a multitude of baubles, garlands, lights and lit villages and if you don’t want a real tree, there’s an excellent range of artificial trees.

How a microchip can keep pets safe during firework season Every year, lost dogs and cats are handed in to veterinary practices and animal sanctuaries across the country and the process of reuniting them with their owners begins. This is where microchipping can be an invaluable tool in ensuring that these situations are brought to a happy conclusion. It seems that every year, firework season starts a little earlier and lasts a little longer! Nowadays, fireworks aren’t just restricted to the period around November 5th and start appearing in the shops as soon as the shelves have been cleared of summer goodies. With Halloween, Christmas and New Year also popular times for some fizz, pop and crackle, firework season can now easily span three months.
The law changed on 6th April 2016 and it is now compulsory for all owners to have their dogs microchipped and contact details kept up to date. Owners of dogs found by local authorities without a microchip, can face fines of up to £500 for non-compliance. Microchipping is not currently compulsory for cats, but vets and many animal charities are in agreement that the law should change to ensure that felines are offered the same level of protection. At Blacks, we have lots of lost cats brought in to us over the course of a year and witness first-hand how much difference microchipping could make at this distressing time.
Whilst some of us enjoy the spectacle of a good firework display, it can be a time of utter misery for many pets, with the loud sounds, flashes and smells heralding a period of real fear and anxiety. It is therefore unsurprising to learn that this time of year sees a sharp spike in lost pet numbers, as frightened animals bolt for shelter. Numbers of runaways are also compounded by colder weather. Frosty fingers can easily lose grip on a lead during a chilly walk and doors and windows that may have remained opened all summer, are suddenly locked when a wandering cat returns home.
If you haven’t yet had your pet microchipped, don’t worry, the process is very simple. The tiny microchip is administered to the back of the neck via injection and sits painlessly under the skin. There is no need for anesthetic as there is generally loose skin at the scruff of the neck, meaning most pets barely notice the application, particularly when they can smell a reward treat

However, it’s never too late to microchip your pet, and dogs, cats, rabbits, tortoises and horses can be protected at any age.

For this reason, it is absolutely vital that your contact details are kept current. Married women prefer geeks!
Handyman, sportsman, hipster or bad boy fantasies are officially a thing of the past! For several years, there has been one kind of man that appears to have won ladies’ hearts once and for all: the geek. That’s right, much more cerebral than muscular, the geek effortlessly seduces the female sex. And this includes married women! According to Gleeden, the European leader in extra-marital affairs with more than 3.7 million members, many of them would gladly exchange their partner's muscles for the grey matter of a soft-hearted geek.

But could geek success with females be a mere passing fad? According to the responses of the women interviewed, the answer is no! An overwhelming majority of them (67%) said they were attracted to geeks and explained their attractiveness in a number of ways: 58% of them said that geeks were less interested in physique than other men and felt more attractive as a result. 42% think that geeks are less arrogant, 39% believe that their intellectual knowledge makes them particularly attractive and finally, more than a quarter of them find geeks simply more interesting than most other men!
Geek is the new chic! According to an American Harris Interactive study commissioned by the site crucial.com, today 84% of women prefer a geek to an athlete. Incidentally, men are not fooled and are ready to do anything to seduce these ladies! For example, 70% of the men interviewed think that they have at some time claimed to know more about technology for the sole purpose of impressing a woman.
