1 Lindal Cedar ✴
THE LINDAL DIFFERENCE
The Lindal Difference begins with the lasting strength and beauty of nature’s most perfect building material: Western red cedar. With its natural radiance, warm range of colors and velvety finish, our fragrant, fine-grained cedar is a daily luxury to live with. Pound for pound, it’s as strong as steel, with natural preservative oils that make it resistant to moisture and insects and a uniform cell structure that provides exceptional insulation. Most important, Lindal reserves the best cedar for you. Our premium grade of kiln-dried, finely-crafted cedar simply can’t be matched at the local lumberyard. From the forest to the building site, we have our own high standards for the cedar we use. We reject much of the lumber that ends up in other homes. And we ensure that our remarkable quality of cedar is always readily available—to you.
Each year, Lindal’s reforestation program funds the planting of thousands of trees—more than enough to replace the material used in our homes. Our goal: to ensure sustainability for generations to come.

2 Lindal Design Open, airy living spaces. Floorplans that flow. Walls of windows. Soaring prows ✴ of glass that capture views and bathe interiors with natural light. Lindal design brings together the elements of style so highly valued in fine custom homes with our patented building system, which is inspired by the post and beam architecture of North American master builders. Lindal’s post and beam building system frees up most interior walls from bearing any structural load, creating an openness that allows for light-filled airy spaces, large expanses of glass, and the flexibility to easily customize a floorplan to your functional and aesthetic tastes. It’s this integrity of structural strength and style that makes a Lindal home so remarkable to live in— not only a wise investment but a wonderful feeling, too.
The beauty of Lindal post and beam construction: Lindal’s signature building system uses a strong framework of posts and beams to support the roof’s weight, freeing up most
THE LINDAL DIFFERENCE
interior walls from serving as structural support. The result: open, airy interiors and flexible floorplans.
A floorplan that just feels right: Lindal homes are as comfortable and functional as they are beautiful because their floorplans create a natural flow that makes it easy to enjoy the motions of daily living. 11

3 Lindal Quality ✴
Today’s tremendous variations in the quality of building materials make it more important than ever to know what you’re getting for your money. In fact, much of the lumber that passes industry grading doesn’t make the grade at Lindal. We take the time to kiln-dry our cedar—an extra step that increases its strength and reduces the chance for twisting, warping and shrinking so common with green wood and air-dried lumber. At the same time, kiln-dried lumber weighs less, so shipping costs are lower. And that’s only the beginning; from framing lumber to siding, from the floor to our roof system, a whole houseful of engineering strengths and premium, above-grade materials are the secret to Lindal’s dramatic beauty, structural integrity, low maintenance and living comfort. Together, they add up to lasting value. Homeowners say that the high quality of Lindal materials brings out the best in a construction crew, too.
“From start to finish, we were on budget, on time, and completely happy with our Lindal home and the Lindal people. We would not recommend building anything but a Lindal.”

I just wanted to drop you a note to express how pleased my staff and I are with the Lindal Cedar Homes we have had the opportunity to erect. By comparison to what is locally obtainable, the materials are unsurpassed in quality and type. It is a pleasure also to know that the quantity and count are ample to complete the project, eliminating the need for wasted travel time to and from the supply yard. The design of the buildings lends itself to old world craftsmanship with high-tech innovations. I don’t think there is a more durable structure available. Each client has been impressed with the beauty of the post and beam construction. Finally, the field support that we have received from your organization has been excellent! Each time a question arises the distributor is there to help. I would gladly recommend a Lindal Cedar Home to any prospective client. Sincerely, Douglas Stiles Stiles Construction Inc.

Prairie ✴
Sweeping vistas, wide open spaces and the brilliance of architect Frank Lloyd Wright’s Prairie home designs inspire some of our latest Contemporary homes. Designed to live in harmony with the landscape, these Lindal homes have long, horizontal lines with low-pitched roofs and open floorplans. The main floor centers on the great room, with its wall of glass looking out to a favorite view. In some plans, the master suite includes a sitting room with access to a screened porch. And there’s ample room for an open kitchen with a breakfast nook and a separate dining room, too. Prairie homes range in size from 2479 to 4216 square feet. Great for entertaining, the open floorplan of the main living area allows for a natural flow among the kitchen, dining room and great room. 34503 NJ

Ranch ✴
Every home in this design series celebrates the convenience of living on one level. The ingenuity of a well-zoned floorplan honors both public and private spaces by devoting different parts of the home to them, and creating an easy flow throughout. The large covered entry is as poetic as it is practical—a perfect place for flower boxes and other container plantings. In the back of the home, the large deck makes a major design statement, with entrances to both the master bedroom and family room as well as the dining room. Lindal’s Ranch homes range in size from 2049 to 2670 square feet.

SmallTreasures Small is beautiful when you build a Lindal. Because our homeowners interpret ✴ “small” in two ways, our home designs do, too. In this chapter, you’ll find homes that
SMALL TREASURES
are small in total square footage and homes with a small footprint—whose dimensions are designed especially to make the most of a small lot. Thanks to the designs made possible by Lindal’s post and beam construction, even our smallest homes have the light, airy feeling for which Lindal is famous. In fact, many find that living in a small jewel of a Lindal is the ultimate luxury—low on maintenance and energy costs, high on the gratification that comes from an intimate living environment that is big on style. Chalet ✴
A little alpine, a little contemporary, a lot of livability—that’s the influence behind our Chalet homes. Inspired by the steep-roofed cabins and covered porches of chalets at world-famous ski resorts, these Small Treasures are at home around the world. Lindal style evokes the spacious feel of a larger home while staying true to a small footprint. On the main floor, soaring ceiling heights and a wall of windows create open, light-filled living spaces. Some Chalets have a full second floor with dormers; others have a loft that looks out to a two-story living room and the view beyond. Smart floorplans make room for both a private office and a spacious master suite. Chalet homes range in size from 1641 to 2817 square feet.

design makes it easy to move a window, add a room or change a roofline. Some homeowners take elements they love from several plans and work with their Lindal dealer to create a custom design. Others design their custom Lindal from the ground up—with the help of an architect or their Lindal dealer. However you want to design your dream, you can count on Lindal’s longstanding reputation for legendary materials. Structural integrity. Low maintenance. Lasting value on a wide range of budgets. Nestled into its lakefront location in Duchess County, New York, this custom Lindal T home looks like it belongs—which is just the way its owners planned it. And it is seamlessly linked, without a hitch in style, by a foyer to the bungalow, which has been remodeled to take full advantage of its prime location just steps from the water. “In the winter, we live in the ‘main house,’” the homeowner says. “In the summer we live in the ‘lake house.’ We feel like we’re on vacation without having to travel anywhere.”

AmericanTudor
When a Virginia builder created a model home for his T residential development, he wanted a traditional design that
would reflect its location just thirty miles from Thomas Jefferson’s home in Monticello. Drawing inspiration from a Lindal plan named Jacob’s Tudor, he used local stonework in place of stucco on the exterior, and crowned the two-story turret with a copper roof. Throughout the home, Lindal’s quality building materials are complemented by the generous use of locally crafted finishes— from custom-forged light fixtures to plank flooring salvaged from a farm in the nearby Shenandoah Valley. Yet this Tudor is thoroughly modern when it comes to being green; solar heating and Lindal windows keep energy costs low.

“If I build a house and order from the local lumberyard, I reject 20 to 30 percent of all the materials. I also deal with 60 to 100 different orders, which means 60 to 100 opportunities for something to go wrong. Stoney Lake Inspired by the Lindal home of some friends, Ken and Diane Mann ✴ knew who to call when they were ready to build their dream home on Stoney Lake in Ontario. Their vision: a home that “snugs” down into their one-acre site and visually lets the outdoors in. Working with their Lindal dealer, they drew elements from several favorite Lindal plans and added many personal touches—including his-and-her bathrooms in the master suite, a semi-formal dining room, and a sunroom that makes the kitchen a popular gathering place. Throughout, quality was important to these homeowners. “We didn’t just want a ‘look’; we wanted the high quality that we know Lindal stands behind,” Diane says. “Our home feels almost like a fortress, it’s so solid.”

Lakeshore Lodge T
A 1920s hunting lodge was the inspiration for this lakefront vacation home in Ontario, Canada. The prime property has been in the homeowners’ family for years, and when they were ready to build their dream home on it, they used Lindal’s Muskoka plan as a point of departure. With the help of their Lindal dealer, they designed a home that makes the most of their views of the lake and manages to be both grand and intimate at the same time. Some of the home’s special features: the great room’s two-story wall of windows, the expansive, half-circle screen porch just off the kitchen and dining room, and the dining room fireplace, built with stones reclaimed from the original family home on the property.

Prairie Moon
The Prairie style of architecture made famous by Frank Lloyd Wright T inspired this custom Lindal, which sits on 640 acres of Kansas grasslands and pasture. True to Prairie School vernacular, the home reflects its wide, open surroundings through its horizontal design, exterior of hand-cut native limestone and wide overhanging eaves. Inside, 5561 square feet of living space come together in an open floorplan that flows easily from one room to the next, with windows looking out to views that extend for miles. Western red cedar and the extensive use of stone give warmth to large spaces and create a natural reference to the landscape in authentic Prairie style.

PlanItYourWay Planning your new home should be a pleasure, and at Lindal, it is. You’ll find the perfect balance of personal choice and expert support every step of the way. You can have as little or as much involvement in the planning process as you wish. And at any point, your local Lindal dealer is ready, willing and uniquely able to help you transform your personal wants and needs into floorplans and elevations.
THE CHOICE IS YOURS
Whether you’ve found the perfect home in an existing Lindal plan, want to modify your favorite Lindal plan to your needs, or prefer to design a custom home from the ground up, the choice is yours—and the pleasure of helping you is ours.
✴ Choose a Proven Plan Many of our homeowners wouldn’t change a thing about their favorite Lindal plan. If you favor the professional design, proven success, affordability and convenience of an existing plan, we offer one of the world’s largest collections of exclusive home styles and floorplans. Many of them are included in this book, and your local Lindal dealer can show you an even wider selection from our design library.
✴ Personalize Your Favorite Plan Want to increase the size of your kitchen? Add a bath? Expand a bedroom? With Lindal, it’s easy to do. Your Lindal dealer will work closely with you to modify your favorite Lindal plan. Because much of the basic design has already been completed, modifying a plan usually takes less time to design than does a completely custom home. For more information on modifying a plan, see pages 148-151.
✴ Create a One-of-a-Kind HOME PLANNING
Whether you’d like us to help design a one-of-a-kind home based on Lindal’s versatile building modules, or you prefer to work with an architect of your choice, Lindal gives you the best of both worlds: the design of your dreams along with the Lindal difference in craftsmanship, building materials and engineering you won’t find anywhere else. If you opt for a one-of-a-kind design using Lindal’s building system, a modest design fee based on your home’s square footage is all it takes to transform your ideas into working plans and final blueprints. Please note that one-of-a-kind homes take more time to plan and design.
102
With the support and expertise of your local Lindal dealer, you can be as involved in the planning of your home as much or as little as you like.

Create a Senseof Place The world’s most beautiful and functional homes are built with a sense of place that comes from a synergy of structure and site. Together, the right design and site orientation will make the most of your property’s topography, light, micro-climate, view potential and value. They will also have an impact on cost. Your local Lindal dealer is an invaluable source of information in helping you create cost-effective solutions that bring out the best in your site. The result: a home that feels like it belongs.

GET TO KNOW YOUR SITE
T
Take time to identify and understand the unique strengths and characteristics of your property; it will pay off for years to come in the lasting pleasure and value of a home that’s in harmony with its environment.
T
Identify the views you want to capture—and the time of day you want to capture them.
T
Walk your property at different times of day—and night. With a little planning, you can situate the rooms in your home to get the natural light you want, when you want it. Consider the path the sun will make across your site from dawn to dusk, and how you want to bring that changing light into your home.
T
Imagine the outdoor lifestyle you want to have on your property and how you can site your home to enhance it.
T
Once you’re well acquainted with your site, your Lindal dealer can draw a working site plan. You’ll want it to incorporate property lines, ground slope, roads, power, water and gas mains, nearby buildings and any natural features such as trees and bodies of water. During this process, your local dealer can help you investigate: — Zoning and covenants — Building codes for snow, wind and seismic loads, and shoreline standards — Setbacks and height restrictions — Accessibility for trucks and equipment — Soil and drainage tests — Sewers or septic systems — Proximity of electricity, gas, water, phone and cable TV

Plan Now toExpand Later HOME PLANNING
Life is change. For any number of reasons—usually changes in family size or budgetary considerations— you can plan a Lindal that starts small and grows to meet your future needs. The key is to plan for expansion from the beginning. It will affect the size of your lot and how your home is situated on it, how heating and cooling systems are sized for cost-effective expansion, how plumbing and wiring are run, and much more. With a little forethought, you’ll have a home that’s ready to grow whenever you are.

THE PERFECT BEGINNING: a Lindal home that is small in scale, high in quality and livability—on your dream property. This one-bedroom, one-bath Newport home begins with the master bedroom in the loft.
A D D A WING Add a roomy wing to create a spacious master bedroom suite on the main floor; the loft becomes an ideal office or second bedroom. Or keep the master bedroom upstairs and dedicate the new wing to more living and dining space.
ADD A SECOND WING Add a second wing to accommodate a garage, workshop or expanded utility room. Depending on your lot, consider building a daylight basement from the beginning, then finish it later for additional, cost-effective space. A large deck extends living space outdoors.

EnergyWise For decades, Lindal has led the industry in energy-smart building materials, design and technology advances. Our inspiration begins with cedar itself; by nature, it lends warmth in the winter and coolness in the summer. Based on your climate, you can choose the Lindal insulation, roof style and windows designed to give you the ultimate in comfort all year round—while keeping energy costs to a minimum. Your Lindal dealer can help determine your insulation needs, based on the design of your roof and the temperatures, winds and snow loads of your location.

Plan for passive solar. Your home’s site orientation and design can significantly reduce your energy bills. To take advantage of the potential for passive solar energy, plan your living spaces on the south face and limit glass on the north. Consider a woodburning stove for back-up heating. Together with the right insulation, passive solar can reduce your energy bills dramatically.
Passive solar: In summer, the roof overhang blocks the sun’s high rays from entering and overheating the interior. In winter, when the sun is lower, it becomes a welcome source of heat and light.
Add additional layers by the use of cedar ceiling liner, which helps keep the interior warm in winter, cool in summer.
Lots of windows on the south face let in welcome winter sunlight. In the summer, leafy deciduous trees block unwanted heat.
Insulate now. For the best in T energy efficiency, build ample
insulation into your home right from the start. Because more heat escapes from the roof than from the walls of a home, the roof is the first place to add extra insulation. In a cold climate, consider adding extra insulation to walls and floors, too.
T
Make the most of windows. Windows can be a major source of energy loss—so it’s good to know that Lindal’s standard, state-of-the-art Low E Argon glass is known for its outstanding energy efficiency. It reduces the loss of heating and cooling. A variety of other glazing options are also available; ask your Lindal dealer for the latest selection. Match your Lindal roof T to your climate. Using vented

and un-vented roof systems, a top performing roof can be matched to any design going into any climate. In addition to giving you the flexibility to match your roof’s pitch and material to the style of your home, Lindal’s roof systems provide a lifetime of energy efficiency.

Going Green
HOME PLANNING
For the well-being of their families, communities and the planet, many Lindal homeowners choose to incorporate environmentally-friendly systems and materials into their homes. Although “green living” means different things to different people, it typically focuses on energy efficiency, resource efficiency and the use of non-toxic building materials and finishes. The growing array of green products makes it easy to reduce your home’s impact on the environment without sacrificing comfort or style. On the deepest level, going green is not so much a destination as it is a journey—a way of living lightly on the earth.
DEALER TIP Going green is not an ‘all or nothing’ proposition. The best place to start is with planning for water and energy efficiency, which will save you money for the life of your home while reducing your impact on the environment. 110

DreamBaths From pretty powder rooms to spa-like retreats, bathrooms are at their best when they combine practical design and pampering amenities. With two or three bathrooms in most Lindal homes, the master bath has become a tranquil haven where you can leave the world behind and soak up an environment that restores and rejuvenates. MediaRooms The more entertainment technology grows in scale and sophistication, the more it needs its own home—in a room designed to accommodate all the hardware and wires in style. A media room can bring together large-screen televisions, DVRs and stereo systems with surround sound in a space designed to maximize their impact. It’s like having your own theater; turn down the lights, curl up in a cozy chair, and bring on the popcorn.

Keep light fixtures in sync with your home’s style and décor. Consider other fixtures and light sources in the room, including windows and skylights.
✴
Install dimmer switches; nothing lets you alter the mood in a room more quickly or inexpensively.
✴
Choose light bulbs that create the quality and color of light you want. Energy-wise fluorescent bulbs produce cool, diffuse light. Halogens provide strong, direct illumination that’s closer to natural daylight. Miniature halogen bulbs are popular as art and accent lighting.

The Great Outdoors
One of the biggest long-term trends in home design is happening outdoors, as homeowners extend their living spaces with decks and covered porches. Think of your outdoor space as a wonderful way to add square feet to your home—and much more. These are places where relaxing and entertaining come naturally; some homeowners even include full-blown kitchens in their outdoor plans. Lindal decks combine top-quality materials with a superior building system so there’s none of the squeaking and bouncing so common in lesser-built decks. Your deck can be designed in any size or configuration that enhances your site and outdoor activities.
OUTDOOR LIVING
T For long-lived beauty and practicality, build your
deck of Western red cedar. It resists rot and insects and retains it natural good looks year after year of use.
T Consider sliding-glass or patio doors; they make it a breeze to serve meals outdoors.
T Multi-level decks can create separate “outdoor rooms” of activity and visual interest.
T Built-in seating adds functionality and gives your deck a finished, custom look.
T Easy access to power and water make life outdoors HOME PLANNING
a pleasure; ample, accessible power and water are vital if you plan to build an outdoor kitchen.
T Lighting can turn a deck into a romantic evening retreat. It’s an important safety consideration, too.
T Plan ahead for a hot tub. Decide where it will be
located, and add reinforcement, support and plumbing according to the manufacturer’s instructions.
T In hot climates, a screened-in porch is a welcome oasis that lets in cool breezes and keeps out insects.

How toRead the Plans
Lindal plans are easy to read and packed with helpful, detailed information. Here are a few useful tips for getting the most from them, along with a sample plan that calls out the type of information included for every plan in this section. Keep in mind that, as you plan your home, it’s important to consult with the Lindal dealer nearest you. Your local dealer knows your area’s building codes, has expertise in making many types of modifications to Lindal plans, and knows the best resources for finding any additional items you want to make your house a home. Personalizing Your Plan You almost have to see it to believe how much impact a few simple modifications can have on the style of your Lindal home. Some changes are as simple as your choice of exterior materials and accents, or a change in the shape or placement of windows. Your local Lindal dealer is an expert in helping you explore the many ways that such minor modifications can have a tremendous visual impact. Of course, with the help of your local dealer, you can also add or enlarge a room, change the entry, or alter a roofline. This is one time in life when change comes easily—with great results.

LEVEL 1 These non-structural changes are a very affordable way to make a large visual impact, and they allow for the fastest delivery. Choose from a wide variety of non-structural changes including siding, millwork, windows, doors, hardware and many other architectural details.
148
LEVEL 2 Includes more extensive changes to the space plan that do not alter the overall footprint, wall height or roof pitch. Add a porch, deck, garage, Lindal SunRoom, modify closets, create a basement— even relocate the master bedroom space.

“We made a few changes, such as adding a front porch because of the northern exposure, and increasing the size of our bathroom—and it was nice to have such input, giving true meaning to the expression ‘custom designed.’” Pam Johnson
LEVEL 3 The Lindal post and beam design system provides you with the opportunity to make any design your own. These revisions change the footprint of your Lindal plan. Stretch or shrink a portion of the home. Add a wing. Change a ceiling height or the size of your windows. Level 3 changes within the Lindal system take a little longer and cost a little more.
BEYOND LEVEL 3 Lindal designers have decades of experience designing award-winning homes that begin with a sketch on a napkin, a conversation with your local dealer, or an architect’s rendering.

Personalizing a Plan: Before Whether you want to make personal modifications to your Lindal home plan from the start or may want to remodel later on, we make it easy to do. Take a look at this home, which is based on our contemporary Sunburst plan; below are the plans before and after Level 3 modifications were made. As you can see, a covered porch was added to create a more dramatic, extended entry. The trim, inside and out, was changed to create a more Craftsman-like look. And inside, the location of the kitchen pantry was changed. This type of personal modification is easy to do—with the Lindal post and beam design format.

Your local dealer is a seasoned professional who knows Lindal, knows your local building requirements, and takes the time to know you–entering into a supportive, collaborative relationship so essential to making a dream home come true. How toGetYour Lindal
From pinning down every planning detail to delivering a part-coded building package that’s complete and on time, Lindal has spent more than 60 years perfecting the process of creating dream homes. Along the way, we’ve eliminated many of the stresses and uncertainties that are typical in building a custom home. Beyond the pleasures of planning your home and choosing interior finishes and furnishings, most of the activity occurs on our end— with your local dealer and with Lindal’s drafting and manufacturing teams. The exceptional quality of our engineering, building materials and design process also support quality construction, helping to ensure that you enjoy the best building experience and custom home value on the market today. And tomorrow.
1 Planning Your Dream
2 Order & Design
3 Production & Delivery
During this exciting stage, your dream becomes a design, and your local Lindal dealer is there to help. This is the time to set a budget, plan your building site, select a Lindal floorplan and make any modifications— taking as much time as you wish. Your dealer can give you a preliminary price on the materials package for your home.
Now your Lindal dealer places your order. Lindal’s drafting team produces Preliminary Plans for your review and revisions as needed. Once you’ve approved the plans, your Final Construction Drawings are completed. Honoring the craftsman’s adage to “measure twice, cut once” Lindal’s advanced CAD technology lets us virtually build your home on our computer system before a single board is cut to your specifications or delivered to your site.
With Final Construction Drawings in hand, you can finalize your choice of builder and apply for your building permit—and your Lindal dealer can help. When you tell us, we begin the final manufacturing of your home. As scheduled, your Lindal building materials arrive at your site in a single delivery, and your Lindal dealer is on hand to take a complete materials inventory.

Dream homes don’t happen by chance. Their success is directly related to the quality of the team involved. At Lindal, your Dream Team combines the best of all worlds: your ideas and wish list; the hands-on advice, attention and follow-through of your local Lindal dealer; and the experience, financial strength and quality assurance of a company that stands behind you from start to finish with a lifetime warranty. This is the kind of team it takes to turn a dream into a living reality—and the kind of company you can count on to be here for you. Whether you’re starting with a sketch on a napkin or have already found a Lindal design you love, we’re ready to help you create the most exciting home in the world. Your own.

The end of this book is really just the beginning. Now that you’ve explored Living Dreams, you can view more of the Lindal homes, or more photos of your favorites from this book. It’s easy to do. Visit us at Lindal.com, and let us show you additional home photos that we simply didn’t have room to share in these pages. You can ‘tour’ the online photos for a specific home quickly and easily; just enter the home identification number, which is located at the end of most photo captions in this book. Of course, your local Lindal dealer is ready to help you at any time. Based on your wants and needs, these Lindal home planning experts can show you even more floorplans and home photos. In closing, we want to send a special thanks to all of the Lindal homeowners who so graciously shared their dreams come true in this book. And we thank you for bringing us into your home, and for thinking of Lindal when you think of building your living dream. We’d be honored to help make it come true.
