WORLD CINEMA Tuesday 14th January @ 8.00pm Thérèse Desqueyroux

France 2012 110mins French with English subtitles Audrey Tautou takes centre stage in the final film of highly respected director Claude Miller (The Little Thief, A Secret), a period piece adapted from François Mauriac’s 1927 novel of French provincial life. Born into a landed family, the spirited, freethinking and iconic anti-hero Thérèse undertakes a marriage of convenience to dull, wealthy landowner Bernard, brother of her best friend Anne. But the stultifying atmosphere of her new life, the events that take place around her, and the self-awareness of her moral ambiguity all build into an inevitable dam-burst of boredom and rage that will determine her ultimate fate. “Tautou shows what a great actress she’s become with a quite mesmerising take on François Mauriac’s confounding anti-heroine in this atmospheric adaptation.” - Trevor Johnson, IFI “The director’s swan song... I cannot think of a more glorious way to go out than with this exquisitely rendered, near-perfect and definitively French film.” - David Noh, Film Journal International “Tautou... is a revelation, and Miller’s final film a fine testimony to his art.” - Derek Malcolm, This is London Adm: €5

WORLD CINEMA Tuesday 28th January @ 8.00pm Wadjda

Saudi Arabia 2012 98mins Arabic with English subtitles Wadjda is a sassy, streetwise ten year-old girl whose feisty manner sets her apart from the other girls at school and in the Riyadh suburb where she lives. She enters a Qur’an-reading competition to raise the funds to buy a bike so she can race her new friend Abdullah, an action that is seen as culturally unacceptable on many levels in a society where women cannot drive or vote, and even laughing in public is discouraged. Wadjda stands steadfast in opposition to a society that resists female self-expression, a girl unwilling to surrender what she wants. A groundbreaking piece of cinema, this is the first feature film shot entirely in Saudi Arabia, and is directed by Haifaa Al-Mansour, the first woman to make a Saudi Arabian feature film. And it’s a fine film too. “Wadjda offers a moving, rarely seen picture of everyday life in Riyadh. With a central character so unique to the screen, Al-Mansour has crafted a subtle counterpoint to the images of females the world is accustomed to seeing, a character who holds hope for the future.” - Liza Domnitz, Tribeca Film Festival 2013 Adm: €5

LOCAL ARTS: COMEDY THEATRE Thursday 30th January @ 8.00pm Jean Farrell - The Six Marys

Written and presented by Jean Farrell, The Six Marys is a comical yet poignant look at life from childhood in the1950s to the present day, following a group of fun-loving girlfriends who grow into practical, everyday housewives. It draws very much on the influence of religion as taught by the nuns, preparing young Irish Catholic schoolgirls to imitate the virtues of the Virgin Mary. They were to be meek, humble and pure. How well did this help them cope with the huge social changes of the following decades? Were the fanciful dreams of youth fulfilled? This journey of self-discovery is interspersed with well-known hit songs from the various eras, sung by Catherine Gallagher. A light-hearted atmosphere offers a backdrop for all kinds of sharp and comical observations, and Jean has plenty to say about the teenage pursuit of Mr Wonderful, followed by the reality of married life, teenage children and growing waistlines. And, when the children grow up eventually and leave home, what lies ahead then - a big void or peace at last? “Very successful comedy.” - West Cork Times Adm. €14 / €12 (concessions)

CONTEMPORARY JAZZ Wednesday 5th February @ 8.00pm

The Little Radio (U.K./Norway) Iain Ballamy (saxophone) + Stian Carstensen (accordion)

Meet the ‘Odd Couple’: Iain Ballamy’s big-hearted Ben Websterish tenor saxophone, and the restless yet lush accordion playing of Stian Carstensen. It’s an unlikely pairing, yes, but critics and audiences alike have been utterly seduced by the wonderful interplay between the two instruments and the jaw-dropping virtuosity of two players at the top of their game. Contemporary jazz lightens up in these capable hands thanks to the playful choice of melodies, the charm of the arrangements, and an injection of good humour. A former member of the pioneering British big band Loose Tubes, Ballamy has worked with many of the leading musicians on the European jazz scene. Best known for his work with the band Farmer’s Market, Stian Carstensen also plays bagpipes, guitar, mandolin, banjo, and a traditional Bulgarian flute called the Kaval. A strange match maybe, but one made in heaven. “This may be the accordion’s most distinguished moment in jazz to date.” - The Telegraph “So together... Delicious.” - The Guardian Adm. €16 / €14 (concessions)

THEATRE Thursday 13th February @ 8.00pm Big Guerilla Productions - dig Playwright, actor and and director Seamus O’Rourke (the man responsible for last year’s sellout success The Sand Park) has become well known for tackling serious contemporary issues through humour and some very quirky but recognisable rural Irish characters. dig is no exception… Two old friends, Tom and James are digging a grave for local character ‘Smokey’ McCormack. His spirit joins them on stage, but it’s too late for Smokey to explain exactly what was going on with certain members of the local GAA team in his house in the years leading up to his death… dig is about ritual, and about things that never get said between men - men who played sport together, men who would die for one another, men who would do anything for ‘The Cause’ and yet keep their real thoughts a secret to the grave. dig is widely regarded as O’Rourke’s best play, powerful and captivating yet full of wit and humour throughout. O’Rourke himself revisits one of his finest roles as Tom and audiences throughout the country are in for a real treat. WORLD CINEMA Tuesday 25th February @ 8.00pm Shun Li and The Poet (Io Sono Li)

Italy 2011 100mins Italian with English subtitles Many recent European films have chronicled the social and personal consequences of the recent wave of immigration to Europe, but few with the delicacy and insight of director Andre Segre’s evocative film. Brought to Italy by an unscrupulous gangmaster who she’s slowly paying off while saving money to bring across her son, thirtysomething mother Shun Li (Zhao Tao) is sent from her factory job to a bar in Chioggia, a small town in the Veneto lagoon. There she strikes up a friendship with Bepi (Rade Sherbedgia), a fisherman nicknamed ‘the Poet’, himself a representative of an earlier immigration to Italy from Eastern Europe. The two come to share a special understanding, and in the face of local disapproval their relationship begins to grow. A refreshingly naturalistic film with a terrific central performance by Zhao Tao as Shun Li. “Enjoyable...uplifting… heart-warming...” - Jennifer Tate, ViewLondon “This is haunting and affecting with visual poetry to spare.” - Mark Kermode, The Observer “A touching fable.” - Donald Clarke, Irish Times Adm. €5

TRADITIONAL MUSIC Thursday 27th February @ 8.00pm The Pick and Shuffle Mando Band

The Naughton brothers, Colm and Finbarr, hail from Creggs, Co. Galway and have played Traditional music on a wide variety of instruments for a small number of decades living life on the edge (of County Galway), currently on the Mayo side of the border in Clonbur and Cross. They’ve played for many years with fellow musician Tony Campbell, who cut his musical teeth on the Dublin session scene and subsequently with groups Setanta and Kinnell. Now they join forces in a new project that features the mandolin family of instruments. The purpose of this show is to give the audience an opportunity to hear this wonderful instrument on its own and in the company of less-wellknown family members, the tenor mandola and mandocello. The group’s focus is on Traditional material but the emphasis is on newly developed arrangements for the instruments. Apart from dance tunes typically associated with trad music you can expect to hear music from the harping repertoire, waltzes and the odd Scott Joplin rag and old Mississippi Blues tune for good measure. If you like strings, you’ll love this! Adm: €16 / €14 (concessions)

VISUAL ART Friday 17th January - Saturday 15th February Gary Kearney

Gary Kearney’s work reflects his interest in architecture, perspective and natural lighting and explores how these change our emotional connection to our city. “The city appeals to me because it contains vast amounts of information infinitly being altered through the effects of weather conditions and man’s constant obsession with construction and progression. The environment changes our emotions towards the way we look at certain aspects of our lives and surroundings. I try to capture these emotions and encase them within my paintings.” Born in Tipperary and based in Cork, Gary graduated from the Crawford College of Art & Design in 2005. His work has been exhibited throughout Ireland including most recently a solo show at the Sirius Arts Centre in Cork and group shows in the Wandesford Quay Gallery in Cork and the Source Arts Centre in Tipperary. Gary is a member of Backwater Artists Group in Cork. Adm. free Official opening on Friday 17th January at 7.30pm. All welcome.

VISUAL ART Friday 21st February - Saturday 22nd March Shiro Masuyama - The Heart Rocker

Over the past 11 years, Japanese-born artist Shiro Masuyama has engaged in a range of residencies worldwide – including Korea, Berlin, New York, Barcelona and IMMA in Dublin – and has exhibited widely in Japan, the UK, Ireland, N. Ireland and mainland Europe. The Heart Rocker is an installation based on the artist’s experience relocating from Berlin to Belfast. Living close to a Peace Line, Shiro was annoyed to repeatedly find dog excrement in his front garden. In response he created a mural banner which he hung on the wall of his house, “a simple action to prevent re-occurrence while also reflecting on my identity as a Japanese outsider.” He also made a video of himself disposing of the offending “metaphorical landmines” while wearing a forensic suit. The exhibition title is a reference to The Hurt Locker, a film about bomb disposal. “In Japan, many people misunderstand the title as ‘The Heart Rocker’, as Japanese cannot differentiate between ‘L’ and ‘R’.” Adm. free Official opening on Friday 21st February at 7.30pm. All welcome.

FIND

FIND is an exciting artistic venture presenting a series of temporary artworks/installations/events in and around the town of Castlebar, with the Linenhall Arts Centre acting as central focus for participating artists and audience alike. Artists were encouraged to consider discreet or ‘hidden’ works that will be ‘unravelled’, or be revealed, via the event tour and maps encouraging the public to seek out the works. The Mayo artists who were selected for the commissions are Nuala Clarke, Alice Dixon, Joanna Hopkins, Chris Leach, Amanda Rice and Ian Wieczorek. This project is the first collaboration of the Linenhall Arts Centre and the Mayo County Council Public Art Programme, in association with international status Irish artists Alice Maher and Aideen Barry acting as mentors for the initiative. As part of this major project, the Linenhall’s Gallery is to become a living installation of the participating artists’ studio environments for the duration of the exhibition, offering an intriguing ‘behind-the-scenes’ insight into the artistic processes at play. The project will stage a day of talks, networking and a tour of the artworks, hosted from the Linenhall on Saturday 29th March. A website documenting the work and a downloadable public art trail will be developed. See www.findartproject.com for further details Adm. free Official opening on Saturday 29th March. ART LECTURE SERIES WOMEN IN ART HISTORY

Lecture Series with John Mulloy Five Monday nights commencing 27th January, 8.00pm-9.30pm ‘Why have there been no great women artists?’ was the question posed by Linda Nochlin in 1971, launching a major debate about the role of women in art history that challenged traditional notions of what it meant to be a ‘great artist’. This series of five talks by Dr John Mulloy, Lecturer in Art History and Critical Theory, will focus primarily on painting, and will be of interest to the general public and students alike. Week 1 will be a general introduction, exploring the question of whether there could be such a thing as ‘women artists’ at all, given the problems of the traditional art historical framework. Week 2 will cover work made by women before 1700, giving an overview of the Medieval and Renaissance periods, and women’s position in the guilds and Academies. Week 3 will look at the period from c. 1700-1900, and the struggle of women in the development of Modernity. Week 4 will explore the changes from 1900 to the present, when women form the large majority of art students. Week 5 will examine the role of women in Irish art history, focusing on the move from cultural nationalism through postmodernism and on to the contemporary. WOMEN IN ART HISTORY Lecture Series takes place over five Monday nights from 27th January (continuing 3rd, 10th, 17th, 24th February). The fee for the full series is €30. Booking is ESSENTIAL.
