THEATRE Wednesday 19th September @ 8.00pm
What Good is Looking Well When You’re Rotten on the Inside? by Emma O’Grady
One month before his death, retired civil servant and man of few words Paddy O’Grady had a sudden urge to talk. Using a portable cassette tape recorder, he recorded 15 hours of stories about leprechauns, aliens and lonely pharmacists; absurdist political satire and musings on life, love and death. In a compelling solo performance Paddy’s granddaughter, Emma O’Grady, examines the fractured and fragile personae we present to the world, who we might be behind them, and who we could be instead. This production provides the audience with a feast of nostalgia, sentimentality, and a picture of relationships past and present. This is a play about family, but also about individuality. It makes for a great story. Paddy’s tapes are the focus of this piece, but it is Emma O’Grady’s skill as a performer that gives them new life. “A multi-layered theatrical mosaic... a wonderful story... compelling, bravura performance.” - Galway Advertiser “A beguiling memoir.” - The Irish Independent “A striking piece of theatrical work.” - thereviewshub.com Adm. €16 / €14 (concessions) Duration: 80 mins

Culture Night - Sally Rooney: Normal People Book Signing @ 7.30pm / Book Launch @ 8.00pm
Sally Rooney’s second novel Normal People, published by Faber and long-listed for the 2018 Man Booker Prize, is the story of Connell and Marianne who grow up in the same small town in rural Ireland. This is an exquisite love story about how a person can change another person’s life – a simple yet profound realisation that unfolds beautifully over the course of the novel. Alternating menace with overwhelming tenderness, Sally Rooney’s second novel breathes fiction with new life. Sally Rooney was born in Castlebar in 1991. THEATRE Wednesday 3rd October @ 8.00pm Co-Motion Media presents Frank Pig Says Hello by Pat McCabe
Twenty-five years after its first groundbreaking tour, Pat McCabe’s Frank Pig Says Hello returns in a new production that brilliantly captures the legendary original. Desperately funny and yet deeply tragic, Frank Pig Says Hello is one of the great classics of modern Irish theatre. It tells the story of Francie Brady growing up in a small Irish town in the 1960s and his descent towards a brutal act that shocks his community. Described as “one of the saddest and funniest tales I have seen” (The Irish Times); “a masterpiece” (The Evening Herald); and “an extraordinary piece of theatre” (The Sunday Independent), the original production coincided with McCabe’s Booker-winning novel of the same story entitled “The Butcher Boy”, and distils Francie’s infamous narrative into a riveting evening of pure, concentrated theatre. Directed by Joe O’Byrne, and featuring mesmerising performances by two actors, Darragh Byrne and John Ruddy, this is theatre at its most entertaining and gripping. Don’t miss it. Adm. €16 / €14 (concessions) Advisory: The play is not suited to under 13s.

WORLD CINEMA Tuesday 9th October @ 8.00pm Summer 1993 (Estiu 1993)
Spain 2017 97mins Catalan with English subtitles Cert: Club When six year old Frida’s mother dies, she moves from her life in Barcelona to her Uncle’s Catalonian farm. This new family and her landscape are alien to Frida; she’s afraid of the chickens, she doesn’t know the difference between a lettuce and a cabbage and she has a new, adoring, annoying little sister. While her family’s warmth and love are abundant, their attempts to protect her only increase Frida’s bewilderment and isolation. This autobiographical first feature from director Carla Simón explores Frida’s conflicting emotions as she struggles to process her losses and adjust to her new life. The performances of the two children are disarmingly vulnerable and natural in this gorgeous, yet unsentimental film about a child navigating grief. “Striking a careful balance between narrative and atmosphere, the writer-director paints a vivid portrait of a light-filled summer when a little girl has to face the loss of her mother and integration into a new nuclear family.” - Jay Weissberg, Variety “Utterly beguiling.” - Wendy Ide, Observer Adm. €7 / €5 (concessions)

THEATRE Thursday 1st November @ 8.00pm Bat the Father Rabbit the Son
written and performed by Donal O’Kelly
Donal O’Kelly performs his solo play Bat the Father Rabbit the Son, an explosive psychological analysis of the generation that gave us The Tribunals. It’s the late 1980s. Rabbit is a self-made haulage magnate. He’s up to his neck in the kind of deals destined to redefine the word ‘tribunal’. But something’s wrong. He cuts a deal with his underling Keogh to help him find what’s missing. This quest is hampered by eruptions from his deceased father Bat, former Citizen Army volunteer and pawn shop assistant, who has the power to come back and take over Rabbit’s body at will. The struggle between father and son, past and present, imagination and reality, spans Dublin. Their crazed voyage out of Howth and up the River Liffey builds to a climax described by The Guardian as “one of the strongest dramatic conclusions I’ve ever seen”. “A prose poem of magical beauties and plunging vulgarities … friends, it is purely brilliant.” - New York Post “Superbly written and performed.” - The Irish Times “A sustained burst of imagination and invention.” - Sunday Tribune Adm. €16 / €14 (concessions)

But as their journey continues, both men also start to get to know and understand each other better... Real-life father-and-son Mohammad and Saleh Bakri (The Band’s Visit) infuse their characters with warmth and humour. The result is a poignant yet entertaining drama. “An intimate, well-played disquisition on what it means to be a Palestinian abroad versus a Palestinian at home.” - Variety “Naturalistic, nicely paced & well played.” - Screen International Adm. €7 / €5 (concessions)

SCHOOLS FILM - JUNIOR CYCLE FRENCH Tuesday 4th December @ 10.30am Miss Impossible (Jamais Contente)
France 2017 Drama/Coming of Age 90mins French language with English Subtitles Director Emilie Deleuze Age Recommendation 12yrs+ This fresh coming-of-age drama centres on thirteen-year-old Aurore, trying to find her way between a beautiful older sister and a brainy younger one. Léna Magnien excels as the prickly teen, rebellious and full of smart answers. Her parents threaten boarding school, but an empathetic teacher and an offer to join a band give her new possibilities. The band’s friendship helps her open up, realise her own talent and create an opportunity for her family to see her in a different light. Please Note: Strong language and sex references NB. Schools Booking Only. Pre-Booking ESSENTIAL. This screening is presented in association with IFI Education.
WORLD CINEMA Tuesday 4th December @ 8.00pm Lucky
USA 2017 88mins English language Cert: CLUB Lucky (Harry Dean Stanton) is a 90-year-old wartime veteran living in a small remote desert town. This fiercely independent atheist’s life has happily revolved around a daily routine involving yoga, diner visits, crossword puzzles, TV game shows, cigarettes and meeting up with his long-time friends at his local. But now as he contemplates the end of life, he finds himself on a late journey of self-exploration... This award-winning first feature from actor-turned-director John Carroll Lynch (Fargo, Zodiac) allows Stanton to shine as the elderly atheist seeking the meaning of his life. Stanton’s final on-screen performance is funny, touching and beguiling, and all the more poignant in the knowledge that he passed away just days before the film’s US cinema release. “Everything Harry Dean Stanton has done in his career, and his life, has brought him to his moment of triumph in Lucky, an unassumingly wonderful little film about nothing in particular and everything that’s important.” - Variety “Packs a really sensitive, understated, emotional wallop.” - Rex Reed, Observer Adm. €7 / €5 (concessions)

WORLD CINEMA Tuesday 18th December @ 8.00pm Columbus
USA 2017 100mins Korean-American Jin travels to Columbus, Indiana after his estranged father falls into a coma. While there, he meets Casey - a 19-year-old who has found herself reluctantly stuck in her hometown. Together they begin to explore Columbus, which is full of buildings from world-renowned modern architects. As a friendship forms and the conversations grow ever more intense, both Jin and Casey begin to confront their own frustrations with life... There are hints of Lost in Translation and the Before trilogy here, but this is very much its own beautiful and unique film. Writer/director Kogonada has a deep understanding of the language of cinema, making this one of the most remarkable American debut features of recent years. “Columbus is a feast for the eyes, but its more lasting impression is on the heart.” – IndieWire “An assured and hypnotic debut with a terrific cast.” - Geoff Berkshire, Variety “A finely nuanced study of people, space and consciousness.” – Screen International Adm. €7 / €5 (concessions)

VISUAL ART: GALLERY Friday 20th July - Saturday 1st September Aideen Farrell - Showroom
Aideen Farrell is a Dublin-based installation artist whose practice explores the systems and physical structures that shape, represent, and impose order on our built environments. She uses a combination of found materials, wood, metal, wire and plaster casts to construct navigable contingent forms that break up and react to the existing spaces. Her work weighs the polished, fixed designs of architecture and urban planning against underlying conditions of precarity and collapse. Aideen is a recent graduate of the National College of Art and Design with a Degree in Fine Art Painting and Visual Culture, and is a member of Ormond Studios in Dublin. In 2017 she was awarded the Fire Station Graduate Sculpture Award, was highly commended in the Undergraduate Awards for her degree show work, and exhibited as part of the Catalyst Arts Centre Graduate Show, Symbiosis. VISUAL ART: GALLERY Friday 14th September – Saturday 13th October Emma Zukovic - Post Memory from A Lost Country
An exhibition of video, print and light installation by artist Emma Zukovic. Born in England, she is now based in Galway. The artist’s mother is of Irish nationality and her father is from Macedonia. Being of Macedonian descent, Zukovic’s work is concerned with the theory of Post Memory and its relevance to the lost country, Yugoslavia. “Post Memory describes the relationship that the ‘generation after’ bears to the personal, collective and cultural trauma of those who came before - to experience they ‘remember’ only by means of the stories, images and behaviours among which they grew up.” The artist confirms: “The stories which we are told allow us to fabricate our realms of imagination, creating utopians of a place never before visited by us personally. My work is concerned with the disappearance of a country, and those who struggled with cultural identity as a direct result. I am interested in the juxtaposition of Post Memory and contemporary printmaking.” Zukovic has exhibited widely in Ireland and also internationally, including Russia, Macedonia, Ukraine and Italy. The exhibition consists of a series of new paintings by Cléa as well as an ambitious film work Written and Directed by Cléa and created with collaborators Joseph P. Hunt, Michael Cummins and Ciaran Carty. A woman stands at the edge of a pier. She wilfully jumps. Slowly she falls through water where time catches her breath. Tips for Attending RoolaBoola:
Make sure the performance or workshop you are attending is suitable for your age - if it’s not, you will not really enjoy it and it’s not fair to the others taking part. It is a good idea to arrive early & visit the toilet before attending a show or workshop. If you are late for a performance or workshop, you will be allowed in only if there is a suitable interval - otherwise you will disturb everyone else. No food or drink is allowed into performances or workshops - it’s very distracting for those around you and can be very messy. If you’re going to a show we suggest you don’t wear shoes with lights - they can be distracting for the performers and those around you. Be sure to wear loose, comfortable old clothes for your workshops - you’ll probably be getting into a right old mess! People with disabilities are very welcome at the Linenhall. We suggest that you phone us before your visit, so that we can make it as hassle-free as possible. Linenhall Arts Centre acknowledges the financial support of the Arts Council and Mayo County Council.
