Hi folks Yes, that salutation should be the giveaway that it isn’t Marie writing to you this brochure – no it is I, Maura, who has been given the honour this time round. Why? You might ask and honour you might wonder…reason being we are celebrating 25 years, yes 25 wonderful years of Linenhall Arts Centre. So, congratulations to one and all for being part of our reaching this milestone, yes, one and all because we could not have done it without you – you, our audience, friends, supporters and volunteers. Now I could go on to mention MY top moments or indeed performances over the years but that might just be too self indulgent and might also upset those who may have other favourites and at a time of celebration I’m not going to be the one to burst the bubble. But when I joined Marie 25 years ago, (yes I know we hardly look old enough to have been anywhere for 25 years!), it was my first real introduction to classical music and subtitled films – neither of which would have appeared on my list of ‘things I like’ BUT here I am, 25 years later, loving both. It’s amazing now when I look back to see how the space has developed on a number of levels, if you’ll pardon the pun. As in starting off in 1990 we had no ground-floor existence, all of our performances took place in the gallery space, with our audience seated on a man-made tiered seating arrangement that had to be taken in and out each time. Our office on the first floor had one ancient clickety- clack manual typewriter, 2 basic desks, 1 telephone, 1 Marie and 1 Maura! We recorded all ticket sales and reservations by hand in an A4 notebook…known to all as The Booking Book. But NOW look at us, 25 years on, quite the modern hub of culture with our newly refurbished, multi-functional and multi-disciplinary theatre space, our super-friendly ground floor coffee shop and the staff of 2 has magically transformed into a number of teams: coffee shop; community arts and office! It has to be said though, that while we do have a number of teams within the organisation including our Board of Directors, we just have one overall super-team, aka the Linenhall. So, might I suggest we raise a toast to the Linenhall, to 25 years of the finest art, film, music, theatre and things literary and as my darling Dad would say… go mbeirimid beo ag an am seo arís, which loosely translates as may we all be alive this time next year, or indeed 25 years time! As always please read on as the brochure is packed with the usual goodies and we look forward to seeing you regularly throughout this, our celebratory year. All the very best,

Georg Peterseil House Whisper, Energies of Man, Places and Spaces We all live in a place and a space we call home. But how deeply are we connected to it? According to quantum physics, more than 90 percent of reality is invisible. This apparently empty space is actually filled with energy that contains intelligence and stores all past, present, and future events. By sharing his personal journey from living a life of separation to one of connection, Georg Peterseil guides you on your own journey to nurture a deeper connection with yourself and your environment. Georg Peterseil is an architect and member of the Royal Institute of Architects of Ireland. He was born and raised in Vienna, and received his degree from the Technical University Vienna. A self-employed architect based in Mayo, he has focused on ecological and sustainable design for the last 30 years.
“Georg Peterseil has given us a beautiful manual, both grounded and deeply spiritual, about energy and how we can keep it flowing freely, not only in buildings and places and relationships, but also in ourselves.” – Jonathan Horwith, Co-Director at the Scandinavian Center for Shamanic Studies Adm: FREE
WORLD CINEMA Tuesday 13th January @ 8.00pm Mood Indigo (L’Écume des Jours)
France 2013 94mins Language: French with English subtitles Prepare to suspend disbelief and immerse yourself in the surreal and yearningly beautiful tale of Colin and Chloé, whose idyllic relationship is turned on its head when Chloé falls sick with an unusual illness - a water lily begins to grow in her lungs - and Colin discovers the only way to save her is to surround Chloe with a never-ending supply of fresh flowers. Set against the backdrop of a charmingly surreal Paris, eminently inventive director Michel Gondry finds inspiration from French novelist Boris Vian’s cult novel Froth on The Daydream to provide the foundation for this visionary and romantic love story starring Audrey Tautou and Romain Duris. “Gondry... combining refined style and raw emotion into one devastating, beautiful package.” - Todd Gilchrist, TheWrap “A match made in heaven: director Michel Gondry, master of cinematic bricolage, meets Boris Vian’s cult novel. Gondry’s brand of dark romantic whimsy and penchant for lo-tech effects nail the writer’s jazzy invention, surreal flights of fancy, streaks of satire and wall-to-wall puns.” - Anne Billson, The Telegraph Adm. €5

THEATRE Thursday 15th January @ 8.00pm Peter Duffy - The Great Hunger
Peter Duffy’s powerful theatrical performance of Patrick Kavanagh’s poem The Great Hunger has been touring the country for the past year to popular and critical acclaim including performances in the Irish Cultural Centre in Paris and the Cathedral Quarter Festival in Belfast. Generally considered to be Patrick Kavanagh’s finest work, The Great Hunger sharply delineates a life of economic and imaginative privation. A large part of the hunger the poem describes is sexual; its protagonist is bachelor farmer Patrick Maguire who has spent years at his mother’s beck and call. When she finally dies aged 91, he himself is 65 and has missed the boat in terms of finding a wife and having a family of his own, a source of acute sorrow and regret to him. Peter Duffy himself grew up on a small Monaghan farm so has a ready affinity for Kavanagh’s material which informs and shines through his absorbing interpretation of the work. “A treat for the ear, the eye and the imagination.” - Down Recorder “..a finely-achieved and compelling production... an outstanding performance.” - Galway Advertiser Adm: €16 / €14 (concessions)

BOOKLAUNCH Thursday 22nd January @ 8.00pm Ger Reidy - Before Rain
The launch of Westport poet Ger Reidy’s highly anticipated third collection of poems, Before Rain, published by Arlen House. Ger Reidy has won several national poetry competitions. His previous collections are Pictures from a Reservation (now in its second printing) and Drifting Under the Moon. Ger will also be reading from his new collection on the night. “Reidy’s poems fizzle like fireworks... [he] makes much out of his Mayo locales, but not for reasons of identity or belonging... more as building blocks for direct lyrical statements which often leave the reader astounded at how much philosophic weight Reidy can give a short 15-20 line poem... Reidy’s poems echo the grounded concision of Larkin... Perhaps a happier comparison would be R. S. Thomas whose poems attain an astonishing lyrical amplitude out of the slightest of rural subject matters, as Reidy’s do here.” - Benjamin Keating, Poetry Ireland Review “Poetry... peppered with hard-hitting musings on the perennial problems that have bedevilled life on the fringe.” - Irish Times “There is a quietness, a poetic reserve... The images are fresh and the emotions uncompromisingly honest.” - Dermot Healy, Cyphers Adm. Free
WORLD CINEMA Tuesday 27th January @ 8.00pm Ida
2013 Poland 80mins Language: Polish with English subtitles Anna, an orphan raised in a convent, is preparing to take her vows when she’s sent to visit Wanda, her aunt and only living relative. A cynical, hard-drinking Communist Party judge, Wanda reveals that Anna’s real name is Ida and that her parents were Jews murdered during the Nazi occupation. So the two embark on an unusual journey through the wintry countryside to unearth their family’s dark history. An astonishing work, both graceful and haunting, the film’s beautiful black-and-white imagery is so artfully composed that every frame belongs in an exhibition. The setting - a somber, 1960s Poland - suggests an austere combination of Catholicism, Communism, and the Holocaust, but Ida is vibrant and intimate, a subtle portrait of two fascinating, contrasting women. - Sundance Film Festival 2014 “This sublime drama confirms Pawlikowski’s place among the best of modern Polish directors.” – Jeremy Aspinall, Radio Times “Delicate and unforgettable.” - Farran Smith Nehme, NY Post “A masterpiece.” – Steven Rea, Philadelphia Inquirer Adm. €5

THEATRE Thursday 29th January @ 8.00pm
Seamus O’Rourke - Padraig Potts’ Guide To Walking Seamus O’Rourke teams up with director Charlie McGuinness for the heart-wrenching tale of Padraig Potts McKeirnan, a genteel boy with enough might to shed his Catholic shackles and enough guilt and preconditioning to prevent him from efficiently succeeding. Bursting with vivacious wit, this show will tear at your heart and cripple you with laughter, bringing to life the colourful characters encountered along the way, from his beginnings in the small rural village of Drumnamee in Co. Leitrim, as he staunchly walks to pave the way for Irish life free from the ties of Catholic constraints: the perfect Protestant girl Sylvia Lang, the discovery of alcohol and the shuddering repulsion of his wife Mary Tague. This is the tale of a generation lost between the old world ruled by religion and the new world ruled by hearts. Could there be hope for Padraig yet? A new play written and performed by Seamus O’Rourke, following on from the success of Victor’s Dung, The Sand Park and dig. “O’Rourke is absolutely superb.” - Will Govan, The Moth magazine (on The Sand Park) Adm. €16 / €14 (concessions)

WORLD CINEMA Tuesday 10th March @ 8.00pm Camille Claudel 1915
2013 France 95mins Language: French with English subtitles Juliette Binoche gives a mesmerizing performance as the brilliant sculptress, protégé of Auguste Rodin (and later his mistress)... who, by 1915, was confined to a remote, church-run asylum for the mentally ill near Avignon. [Writer-director] Bruno Dumont’s rigorous, hypnotic portrait suggests that Camille’s intense creativity and bohemian mores were on an inevitable, tragic collision course with her conventional Christian family and the expectations of early 20th century French society. Camille’s paranoia (she believes Rodin is plotting against her) and occasional violent outbursts complicate her situation. Dumont peoples his film with real asylum patients, giving the film a disturbingly realistic dimension that adds to its poignancy. - Kino Lorber “A film of immense visual beauty, thematic clarity and subtle resonance.” - Geoff Andrew, Time Out “A powerhouse performance by Juliette Binoche provides the beating, tortured heart of this finely wrought and very affecting film.” - Mark Kermode, The Observer Adm. €5

FAMILY SHOW Saturday 11th April @ 4.00pm The Ark presents the world premiere of
Far Away From Me by Amy Conroy
Kevin is a little prince…at least that’s what his mum tells him. Kevin likes the idea of this, of being a prince on a horse, a beautiful brown horse with a white splotch down his nose, and galloping across the kingdom. His kingdom. From his bedroom behind the eighth door, on the eighth floor of a tall building (one of eight in a row), Kevin can go. And he wants to go. Far away from here. So his towering imagination takes him on some high-flying adventures. But there’s a storm coming and he needs to decide what’s real and what’s not real as his fast paced fantasies land with a spectacular bump right there on his bed. Far Away from Me is a new theatre show written and directed by Amy Conroy, inspired by The Princess and the Pea and infused with the wild energy of aerial performance, dance music and great storytelling. For ages 6 years and up and their families. Adm. €8, €25 (family of four)
THEATRE Thursday 16th April @ 8.00pm
Rise Productions - The Games People Play
Winner of Best New Play at the Irish Times Theatre Awards and the sell-out success of Dublin Fringe Festival, Rise Productions returns with The Games People Play, a radical re-working of the Tír na nÓg myth. Niamh and Oisín were sold the dream – the house, the life, the kids. But what do you do when everything you ever dreamed of still isn’t enough? One night, a series of games starts to escalate, and threatens to unravel their suburban paradise. Touching family drama meets epic Celtic mythology, distilled into a Dublin semi-d and presented in the trademark ‘TheatreStrongStyle’ of Rise Productions, award-winning Irish theatre company that brought us Fight Night. Written by Gavin Kostick, directed by Bryan Burroughs and performed by Lorna Quinn and Aonghus Óg McAnally performing. “Slow-burning, riveting snapshot of a middle-class marriage on the brink… cuts right to the bone.” - Donald Mahoney, Irish Theatre Magazine “A genuinely accomplished and imaginative take on postboom family destruction… intense, convincing.” - Emer O’Kelly, Sunday Independent Adm. €16 / €14 (concessions)

WORLD CINEMA Tuesday 21st April @ 8.00pm
Stations of the Cross (Kreuzweg)
Germany 2014 107mins Language: German with English subtitles A 14-year-old girl’s commitment to the extreme tenets of a conservative Roman Catholic sect is traced with a mix of compassion and irony. Dedicated to self-denial, young Maria is tormented by the scrutiny of her fanatically observant mother and disconcerted by her feelings for a boy whose appetite for music has not stopped at Bach cantatas. Though his film is formally precise – enacted within a series of tableaux named for the Stations of the Cross – you may never know exactly where on the faith spectrum director Dietrich Brüggemann is coming from: a place of uncertainty, perhaps? What’s utterly sure is the heartbreaking credibility of young Lea van Acken as Maria. The script, which attains a spellbinding clarity of thought and emotion in her most direct encounters with her priest, won Best Script in Berlin this year. - New Zealand International Film Festival 2014 “Brilliant and subtle.” - David Jenkins, Little White Lies “This deliberate, meaty, provocative drama... The script is pinsharp... Lea van Acken [is] absolutely stunning in her screen debut as Maria.” – Paul Gallagher, The List Adm. €5
THEATRE Wednesday 29th April @ 8.00pm
Asylum Productions - The Chronicles of Oggle
Meet Pakie. An orphan, a storyteller, an adventurer, a survivor. He may not be the sharpest sandwich in the toolbox, but Pakie’s got secrets. Secrets the God fearing people of Oggle may not be ready to hear… The Chronicles of Oggle is a tragicomic life story of Pakie, a man in his 50s and a by-product of institutional Ireland. His childlike wisdom questions the very fabric of the society that has spawned him, a society of fanatical and institutional madness - a society that has fundamentally failed him. Although severely disadvantaged, Pakie is indomitable, and he prevails no matter what the obstacles. Written and performed by Peter Gowen, and directed by Donal Gallagher, this is a hilarious and heart-breaking story of small towns and even smaller minds. underpinned by a tour de force central performance. “…excellent performance and writing.” Irish Examiner “…a comic tale of our times - startling, enjoyable and sad – a sharply faceted performance.” - Irish Times “Gowen… has the audience reeling.” - Playstosee.com “Funny, lyrical... evocative.” - Irish Theatre Magazine Adm. €16 / €14 (concessions)

VISUAL ART: GALLERY Friday 21st November - Saturday 17th January Pamela de Brí - Midland 2/Lár Tíre 2
Midland 2/ Lár Tíre 2 is a multimedia installation of photographs, notebooks, maps, prints, audio clips and video focusing on the North West section of de Brí’s Midland Project. Taking inspiration from the culture and heritage of the railways and their location, and focusing on the former Midland Great Western Railway which traversed Ireland from East to West, the Midland Project interweaves history, folklore, hearsay, stories, memory, beliefs, nature and natural history, in an attempt to record the patina and texture of place. The work has been on-going from 2011 to the present. Pamela explains: “I am interested in the convergence of art and social documentary, how objects and images from the past embody cultural memory and characterize the future. My art presents a perspective on temporality and on an everevolving world, critiquing values and trends that result from social change.” Pamela has exhibited widely in Ireland with solo exhibitions in Galway, Kildare, Westmeath and Dublin, and group shows in Ireland, Wales, England and Australia. Adm. Free
VISUAL ART: GALLERY Friday 23rd January - Saturday 28th February Jack Hickey - The Nocturnes
Born in 1988 in Cobh, Jack Hickey graduated from Crawford College of Art & Design in 2011. Following his degree show he has received considerable critical acclaim and a purchase prize from the OPW. In 2013 he began a new body of paintings entitled The Nocturnes, dealing with the social nightlife experience amongst Ireland’s young adults, which “illustrates the beautiful, the ridiculous, and the menacing of the clouded contemporary cityscape. The work explores the shaded underclass of the nocturnal urban terrain and pursues the disenfranchised as they search their city for meaning once darkness falls.” “Hickey... combined skill with concept in a series of intensely atmospheric realist paintings.” Cristín Leach, Sunday Times “Hickey... is the real deal, an artist with a clear vision and the ability to realise it in paint. His canvases - of glimpsed figures in otherwise empty rooms - are some of the best in recent graduate exhibitions.” - Marc O’Sullivan, Irish Examiner “Jack Hickey’s fragmentary views... are well judged.” - Aidan Dunne, Irish Times Adm. VISUAL ART: GALLERY Friday 6th March - Saturday 11th April DavId Begley - Breathe
Breathe is a solo exhibition of new works in charcoal animation by David Begley. Each animation is made of thousands of hand-drawn images using charcoal made from driftwood. David allows the process of drawing and erasing to prompt his images and narrative. Shimmering figures move between dark and light, haunting flickering worlds of water, breath, forests and fire where nothing is permanent and birds can transform to become islands, clouds and strange beasts. Combining recorded sounds of sea, wind and birdsong as well as piano recorded at The Tyrone Guthrie Centre, David has also composed the soundtracks for these works. David Begley’s drawings and paintings have been exhibited in America, Australia, Europe, China and he exhibits regularly in Ireland. Recent exhibitions include The RHA Annual Exhibition 2014, Irish Wave 2013 (Beijing, Shanghai), Eigse Carlow 2013/14, 12; and VUE National Contemporary Art Fair 2012. His work is to be found in the collections of The Contemporary Irish Arts Society, EPA, OPW and INTO. Adm. Free Official opening on Friday 6th March at 7.30pm. All welcome.
VISUAL ART: GALLERY Friday 17th April - Saturday 23rd May Vicky Smith - A Final Soar Into Orbit
Featuring an atmospheric installation, photography, film work and figurative clay sculptures, Vicky Smith reflects on “the disappearance of an RAF pilot, the legacy that has resulted over three generations, strong independent women and an obsession with flight and missions to space.” The nature of the work is inspired by her great grandfather, the book Astronaut Wives’ Club by Lily Koppel, the Life magazine images taken from this time, her grandfather’s photographs and the re-appropriated fictional TV character Arthur Daley. Within this installation the artist examines this legacy resulting in a fictional end to the story. Vicky Smith’s practise explores the tendency of art to be effective in the real world, and miscommunication and translation between art forms and concepts. Smith is a visual artist based in Engage Arts Studios in Galway. She has an MA from NCAD’s Faculty of Visual Culture, an MA in Arts Administration and Cultural Policy from Goldsmiths College, London, and a BA from Crawford College of Art. She is currently joint Project Coordinator of Engage Art Studio Project. Adm. Free Official opening on Friday 17th April at 7.30pm. All welcome.

ART LECTURE SERIES Art in the Twentieth Century Lecture Series with Philip Shiels
Five Wednesdays commencing 25th February, 8.00-10.00pm Modern Art is often described as difficult, challenging, formidable, aloof, arrogant and inaccessible, verging on the nonsensical, frivolous and sometimes the downright ridiculous. But art in the Twentieth Century is also the story of dynamically changing practices inspired by, and reflecting, the turbulent history of that century. The aim of these five lectures is to consider the historical background and events, important artistic movements and crucial moments that have shaped and influenced contemporary art. Not so much a detailed blow by blow account of art history but more a survey of some of the most important movements and many “voices of art” from the last 150 years and how they relate to art we encounter today. 1) New Freedoms: Revolutions and the Avantgarde: The break with tradition and authority, the invention of photography and the birth of modernism. 2) The Construction of a New Century: Technology, Devastation and the Aftermath. The period from 1914 to 1945. 3) Brave New World: Developments in America and Europe. From abstract expressionism to pop art on the one hand, to reconsidering the “weight of history” on the other. 4) Mimimalism and Post-Modernism: “From “less is more” to “ornament is not a crime”. How art, architecture and popular culture won the day. The strange story of consumerism and art versus the development and spread of conceptual art. 5) Contemporay Directions and Musings: Regionalism in a globalised world. Artists and the art world today at home and abroad. This course is open to all and will appeal to anyone with an interest in the history of art, contemporary art and students studying for the Leaving Cert. Phillip Shiels is an artist and art historian. He holds an M.A in Philosophy and Modern Visual Culture, and has worked as a lecturer at colleges and third level instituitions for 25 years. Art in the Twentieth Century Lecture Series takes place over five Wednesdays commencing 25th February from 8.00pm-10.00pm (continuing 4th, 11th, 18th, & 25th March). Cost per head for the series is €30. Booking is ESSENTIAL. Booking and further information from the Linenhall.
