Happy New Year Everyone.
Oisín here, some of you probably know me from seeing me about the building. I am Technical/Buildings Manager for the Linenhall and have been working here for nearly twelve years. To be honest the twelve years feel more like one, time just zips by. My role here now is mainly based around my duties as Technical Manager. This means I get to see what a show looks like before it is unloaded from a van, I meet all the background people involved in getting the shows to the finished product you see on stage. It still amazes me when we start lifting in the gear or moving a set into place how we always manage to pull it all together in time for the audience to take their seats, and hopefully have a wonderful night’s entertainment. I count myself extremely lucky that I get to see the whole magic, be it a theatre show from truck to stage to lights to performance and back to truck on the same day. Or working with a visual artist on an installation in the gallery and helping them make their ideas real. All of the great musicians I’ve set up for, whose talents soar through the sound of beautiful instruments. But I can be spotted doing other bits and pieces around the Centre. If something is broken, blocked, stuck, flooded, falling, freezing, overheating, or just not working, I get called. One job I love is meeting, greeting and seating our audiences and I have to apologise for sometimes not recognising you - (I am looking at the seat numbers on your tickets). I also help run our wonderful coffee shop. This is our gateway to the Linenhall and without a doubt the friendliest cup of coffee in town thanks to the great Angela, Mary, Anne and Breda. In truth, my job is really to ensure you are safe and comfortable each and every time you visit. So all I have left to say is, turn to the next page, and the next, and keep reading to see what a wonderful programme we have lined up for you this Spring. And I look forward to welcoming you all in 2016.

Katherine Hunka (violin); Dermot Dunne (accordion); Malachy Robinson (double-bass) Top musical entertainment from top musicians: Katherine Hunka and Dermot Dunne were joined by double bassist Malachy Robinson for a national tour in January 2014 and based on its success, the trio has been invited to perform in many venues and festivals since. Their concerts include Baroque, South American, Klezmer music and film classics, and their performances are noted for being both highly engaging and entertaining. Leader of the Irish Chamber Orchestra violinist Katherine Hunka and the extraordinary accordion player Dermot Dunne have been playing together since 2007. They have toured Ireland and China playing everything from Baroque to Piazzolla. Dancing Around the Subject with Liadain Herriott and Alice Maher
Contemporary dancer Liadain Herriott will perform Liminal, a piece she created and premiered at Dublin Fringe 2015 and for which she won the Best Performer at Fringe award. Following a short break with a glass of wine, visual artist Alice Maher will join Liadain in a conversation with Marie Farrell about how artists make work, where do the ideas come from and how are they made real? Alice Maher is an internationally renowned visual artist who works in a wide range of media. She represented Ireland at the 23rd Sao Paolo Biennale. A mid-career retrospective of her work, Becoming, was held in IMMA in 2012. She is a member of Aosdana. Liadain Herriott trained originally as a classical ballet dancer in Dublin, Monte Carlo and Madrid and has worked with many international companies and chorographers. Developing her contemporary technique, she was artist-in-residence at Danscentrumjette, Brussels. Her interest lies in the use of the body as a vehicle for emotional expression and in the communication of thoughts and ideas through movement. A fascinating evening in prospect. Adm: €10

One Duck Theatre - The Poor Little Boy With No Arms
A dark comedy by Mikel Murfi and One Duck, set in a small town with big secrets! Ruby arrives in Skibberceannigh, ‘The World’s Most Liveable Community’, to a warm welcome from the friendly townsfolk. However, life in this rural idyll seems too good to be true and while out walking late one night, Ruby comes across a mysterious man who has no arms. He tells her that the townsfolk discriminate against him and set him arduous tasks to do in the dark of night and Ruby soon discovers that this shocking treatment of her new friend is just one of the town’s many dark secrets… This is the first production by One Duck, a new company formed by seven graduates of The Lir Academy. The play was devised by acclaimed Irish actor Mikel Murfi (Ballyturk, The Walworth Farce, The Man in Woman’s Shoes) and One Duck, exploring the themes of secrecy, control and the Irish psyche in this fastpaced and physical comedy-drama. To engage in and to commemorate the centenary of 19162016, the Service Users and Staff of RehabCare perform a Pageant in two acts involving Drama, Music, Dance and Art. “It explores aspects of our journey as a nation through the harshness of history onto present times, where we own our stake in modern Ireland. We all want to be someone, we all want to belong, and we are all stakeholders in the Ireland that has survived, as have we. LOCAL ARTS: YOUTH THEATRE Monday 21st & Tuesday 22nd March @ 8.00pm Acting For Fun – Midnight in the Theatre of Blood / Fine
The members of Castlebar’s Acting For Fun youth theatre group takes to the Linenhall stage, under the direction of Donna Ruane, to present an evening of two comic plays by local playwright Ken Armstrong. In Midnight in the Theatre of Blood, a group of friends spend the night in their local theatre on Halloween night, summoning the ghost who lives there. But ghosts are not always what you expect and evenings do not always go as planned. The short play Fine invites you to visit one of the strangest fast food restaurants you’ve ever seen, and that strange girl behind the counter will soon find out if you really are as ‘fine’ as you say you are. Midnight had its premiere at the Linenhall in 2008 and has since gone on to a number of productions after being a National Association for Youth Theatre Playshare selection in 2014. Fine was also premiered here in Castlebar in 2012 in front of a large audience which included An Taoiseach, Enda Kenny. It’s theatre by young people, but it’s for adults too: come and enjoy! This large, explosive, fun music performance written by award winning composer Stephen Deazley features 60 rising young percussion stars from primary schools in Castlebar town with internationally renowned percussion soloist Joby Burgess, joined by a 5-piece band comprised of trumpet, saxophone, trombone, synthesizer and electric bass. This performance is the culmination of a 9-week learning and participation music project funded under the Music Generation/Arts Council Partnership and delivered on behalf of Music Generation Mayo and Linenhall Arts Centre by Music Network together with Love Music Productions Ltd (Scotland).

In Flow is a unique and immersive performance fusing electronic music, gamelan* percussion and visuals. Composed and performed by That’s Life Players in collaboration with Andrew Madec, In Flow brings the audience through a soundscape of electronically processed gamelan percussion and live ensemble performance. Andrew has previously explored gamelan in a non traditional context in his album Gamelan Reimaginings. He now continues on this path with That’s Life Players in an Arts and Disability context. This collaboration has inspired new and inclusive ways of composing for gamelan and electronics. The result, In Flow, is a beautiful atmospheric and textured work which will surprise, enchant and move the audience. *Gamelan is the traditional ensemble music of Java and Bali in Indonesia, made up predominantly of tuned bronze percussive instruments. VISUAL ART: GALLERY Friday 15th January - Saturday 13th February Cathy Carman - Diary
A sculptural installation encompassing bronze sculptures, floor drawings, found objects and sound. The show explores the timeline in the making of the sculpture. “The fundamental concern of my artistic practice is bearing witness to interior weather through the use of the figure in sculpture. My work explores the interior psyche, looking for the poetic moments in the female form, the primal image from the subconscious. My figures are carriers – some of burden, others joy – exploring the desire for love and belonging counterpointed by loss and fracture.” Cathy Carman was born in Portlaoise and studied sculpture at NCAD. She is widely acclaimed for her figurative work in wood, stone, bronze and ceramic. Her expressionist style is also evident in the many public commissions she has undertaken. She continues to exhibit regularly, both in-group and solo shows both in Ireland and abroad, and her more recent work has used digital imaging, natural materials found objects and sound to contextualize and counterpoint the figure. Artist Breda Lynch presents an exhibition of new work informed by her interest and ongoing research into the copy, identity, the double and dialogues from the peripherals of history and alternative culture. Her artistic practice is interdisciplinary and explores the mediums of drawing, photography, print media, installation and experimental video. Lynch has exhibited extensively in Ireland and Northern Ireland. Solo shows include The Pit and Other Stories (2014) at Siamsa Tire Gallery, Tralee and Thursday’s Clinic (2013) at 126 Gallery, Galway. Lynch has also exhibited internationally in Scotland, England, Italy, Turkey, Thailand, China, USA and Iceland. Lynch is the recipient of several awards including the Cill Rialaig Artist Residency Award, Arts Council Travel and Training Award, Arts Council Bursary Award and the SIM Residency in Reykjavik, Iceland. VISUAL ART: GALLERY & BEYOND Saturday 26th March - Saturday 30th April Mayo Arts Collaborative Kathleen Lynn: Insider on the Outside
Kathleen Lynn: Insider on the Outside, which runs concurrently in five visual arts venues around Mayo, is a creative investigation into the life and work of Kathleen Lynn by thirteen contemporary Irish artists and is curated by Catherine Marshall. Born into an Anglo-Irish family in Mullafaghry, County Mayo in 1874, Kathleen Lynn went on to play a significant role in 1916. A medical doctor, active suffragette, labour activist and nationalist, Lynn was a member of the Irish Citizen Army and chief medical officer during the 1916 Easter Rising. For her part in the rising she was imprisoned in Kilmainham Gaol, with her friends Constance Markievicz, Madeleine ffrench-Mullen and Helena Moloney. During the 1920s she was best known for her pioneering work with Dublin’s poor at Saint Ultan’s Hospital for Infants, which she established in Dublin in 1919, with a group of female activists including her life partner Madelaine ffrench Mullen. Lynn died on 14 September 1955, and was buried in the family plot at Deansgrange Cemetery with full military honours. Mayo Arts Collaborative sees 2016 as an opportunity to re-focus national attention on this extraordinary Mayo woman, her life and her work by championing her in the county of her birth. The project will create a cultural trail through the county, and both visitors and locals alike will be encouraged to engage with Lynn’s life and work in exhibition spaces in Belmullet, Ballycastle, Ballina, Castlebar and Westport. Kathleen Lynn: Insider on the Oustide is presented by Mayo Arts Collaborative and follows on from their first project which was a county wide exhibition of the work of Mayo artist Niamh O’Malley in 2013. Seminar for fiddle players Thursday 14th January 5.00pm-6.30pm Join Irish master fiddler Kevin Burke for a seminar on Irish fiddle music. The event will take the form of a question and answer session with fiddle demonstrations. Kevin is happy to take questions on fiddle technique, ornamentation, repertoire, as well as his own career, how he prepares for performances, etc. The session will culminate with a practical demonstration and exploration of fiddle techniques, rhythms and ornamentation - fiddle players are encouraged to bring their instrument along. Kevin Burke has been at the forefront of Traditional music for over 30 years. He has worked with such renowned performers as Arlo Guthrie, Christy Moore, Andy Irvine, the Bothy Band and Paul Brady. During his illustrious musical career, Kevin has earned international acclaim in both Europe and America as a solo performer, a teacher and as a member of some of folk music’s foremost groups. Burke is an immensely engaging performer and is considered one of the finest living Irish fiddlers. Workshop series for adults with Anne Marie Gibbons Eight Fridays, from11.00am-1.00pm, commencing 22nd January Back by popular demand!! From January to March the Linenhall will resound to the sound of adult voices being put through their paces by singing teacher and performer Anne Marie Gibbons. This course will take the form of an introduction to singing for adults. It is designed as a confidence-building exercise which will give those taking part the techniques and skills required to sing a song from beginning to end with self-assurance and expression. Anne Marie will coach participants in basic vocal techniques (such as breathing) while also helping them to overcome nervousness to put a song across. Plenty of fun along the way is guaranteed!! A willingness to perform in front of the group is required and as such the course is not ideal for those who are painfully shy. Anne Marie Gibbons is a mezzo soprano. International appearances include, among others, Begbick (The Rise and Fall of the City of Mahagonny) at Covent Garden, The Page (Salome) in Adelaide, and David (Saul) in Paris at the Versailles Handel Festival. She was company principal at the English National Opera for three years and has a wide-ranging oratorio and concert repertoire. WAX WORKSHOP The Wonders of Wax for 8-12 year olds with Claire Griffin Four Saturdays, from 11.30am-1.00pm, commencing 30th January An exciting workshop series exploring creative ways to use wax when making pictures. Artist Claire Griffin will introduce participants to techniques for working with wax including etching, cracking, stamping, and drawing with brushes and tools called tjantings. Working on paper and cotton, with wax, dyes and colours you’ll take home art works of your very own. Claire Griffin is an accomplished Westport based painter. She has extensive teaching experience and has facilitated visual art workshops throughout Mayo including the highly successful Still Life, Paper Cup Pets, The Bigger Picture, and Spooky Spoon among others here at the Linenhall. HERE’S YOUR CHANCE: VISUAL ART WORKSHOP Still Life Drawing Workshop for Adults with Betty Gannon Six Mondays from 11am-12.30pm, commencing 8th February, Each week Betty Gannon will install a different still life set-up that participants will use as a starting point to create a series of drawings. Using the freedom of expression and creativity that drawing allows, participants can make a series of sketches, realistic drawings, decorative drawings, or use the still life set as a starting point for experimental drawings, fictional drawings or mediative drawings. As well as traditional materials, unusual and experimental materials can also be used. Betty Gannon will encourage and advise participants in relation to the particular direction they wish to take with their drawing. This workshop is both for beginners and for people with more drawing experience. Betty Gannon works mainly in drawing, painting, photography and 3d work and is currently working on a series of large graphite drawings at her studio in Westport, Co Mayo. BOOK ART WORKSHOP Family Book Art Workshop for families with children aged 5yrs+
with artist Paula Henihan Saturday 16th April at 10.45am-11.45am / 1.30pm-2.30pm Blow the dust from an old hardback book and transform it into a visual story that is literally jumping off the page. Using paper, card, found materials and imagery participants will create a sculptural collage from a book. This is a family workshop in which a parent or guardian takes part too! - a great opportunity to spend some time being creative together. Paula Henihan is an artist and art teacher. Since completing her masters in fine art and HDip in Art and Design Education, she has taught art in formal and informal settings for ten years. “I enjoy exploring art with children.
