TRADITIONAL MUSIC Wednesday 31st January @ 8.00pm Music of Mayo
Join a host of musicians and singers for a stellar performance celebrating the music of Mayo, and marking the realisation of an exciting residency project at the Linenhall. The residency, undertaken by musician and composer Emer Mayock, explored the rich traditional music heritage of County Mayo, with the aim of drawing together a collection of music and song associated with and composed by musicians and singers from Mayo. The repertoire gathered during the project comes from a range of sources stretching back to the earliest music collected in Mayo, but also including more recent settings of tunes gathered from musicians living and playing in the county today, as well as new compositions. Performers on this very special evening include Grainne Hambly (harp), Julie Langan (fiddle), Joe Byrne (flute), Tom Doherty (accordion) and Emer Mayock (flute) alongside guests and younger musicians. A CD created during the residency which traces the rich traditional music heritage of County Mayo and gives prominence to a wealth of musicians of all ages from across the region will be launched on the night. Mayo Rape Crisis Centre presents an opportunity to celebrate St Brigid’s Day by meeting and greeting some of the nominees for our Inspirational Mayo Women. There is now a small community of women who have been nominated by others for the inspiration they offer others. Sometimes very quietly. ‘To Inspire’ is to ‘fill up’. There have been three awards presented so far, with 2017’s award being our fourth award. Previous recipients are Martina Jennings, Margaret Leahy and Marina Tuffy. Written by Larry O’Loughlin, adapted & performed by Stephen Jones During the three years of the American-Mexican War (1846-48), some 3000 immigrant soldiers deserted the American Army. More than 500 of these - mainly Irish - joined the Mexican side where, led by John Riley from Clifden, Co. Galway, they fought as The San Patricio (St. Patrick’s) Battalion. Although their sacrifice is often overlooked - or ignored - by history these days, huge numbers of Mexicans still hold the brave soldiers in high esteem. Performed by award winning actor/playwright Stephen Jones (Red Rock, Love/ Hate, Dublin Oldschool, Nowhere Fast, Maz and Bricks, From Eden, DruidMurphy), the play tells the story of the San Patricio Battalion from the point of view of Thomas O’Byrne, who unwittingly finds himself caught up in the war while trying to escape arrest. Through his innocent eyes we experience the full horror of these historic events and the terror that can come with trying to do the right thing. The play’s title is taken from a quote attributed to the Mexican leader, General Antonio Lopez de Santa Anna: “With a hundred more like these men of Riley’s, I could have won this war!” Adm. €16/ €14 (concessions)

Mayo born pianist Darragh Brogan began his BMus in 2009 at the DIT Conservatory, studying piano with Mary Lennon. He enjoyed considerable success there, gaining first prize in all its major piano competitions, and also claimed regular prizes at the Dublin Feis Ceoil, including the Anthony Glavin Trophy in 2014. Throughout his studies he participated in regular masterclasses with internationally acclaimed pianists including Barry Douglas, Graham Johnson, and Philippe Cassard. Darragh graduated in 2013, receiving the prestigious Student Academic Excellence Award for highest overall result in the Conservatory. He subsequently completed a Masters in Performance Science at the Royal College of Music in London (where he is now based), studying piano with Professor Nigel Clayton. Darragh has given many performances in prestigious venues around Ireland and the UK including the National Concert Hall, Christchurch Cathedral, Dublin Castle, the Boyle Arts Festival, St. Mary Abbot’s Church, Kensington and St. George’s Church, Hanover Square, London. Galway-based folk/roots five piece collective Vickers Vimy was formed by Ed Drea and Fintan Hanley, and completed by Colm Ward, Eamonn Mulderrig and Colm Ó Conghaile. Vickers Vimy has supported such greats as John Martyn, The Hothouse Flowers, Mundy and Maria Doyle Kennedy. Produced by Daragh O’Toole and mixed by Ger McDonnell, debut album That Vinyl Scratch, Vol 1 was released in 2013 and garnered rave reviews, and the first two singles Devil on your Back and Days are getting better were both playlisted by RTÉ Radio 1, with a live appearance on the Pat Kenny show. The band’s long awaited second album Atlas Of Hearts will see light of day in 2018. Irish Classical guitarist Redmond O’Toole has been hailed as one of the most interesting players of his generation, renowned for his atmospheric performances and dazzling virtuosity. He has given recitals throughout Europe and the US at prestigious concert halls and festivals as soloist, as well as with The Chieftains and Dublin Guitar Quartet. After a number of recent collaborations with acclaimed artists including Derek Gripper (South Africa),Chloe Hanslip (UK) and The International Guitar Quartet, he returns to solo concerts this Spring. The program exploits the full range of his unusual 8-string guitar and ‘cello style’ technique, beginning with transcriptions of J.S. The Wonderful Tune is a captivating, moving, and interactive show for children aged 6 and above. Ceol Connected’s reimagining of an old fairytale weaves together traditional music, song, puppetry, and animation to bring children on an unforgettable journey. Told through the eyes of Maggie Connor and her son Maurice ‘the king of all the pipers in Ireland’, The Wonderful Tune is a musical world of singing mermaids, dancing sea creatures, and an enchanted tune which is sure to have everyone singing along! Music Network presents Thibaut Garcia (guitar) & Isang Enders (cello) A thrilling new collaboration between Franco-Spanish guitarist Thibaut Garcia and German cellist Isang Enders, both young artists with rapidly-growing international reputations. Recently dubbed “the new face of classical guitar”, 23-year-old Garcia has already cut a swath through the world’s foremost guitar competitions - taking firsts in six of them - thanks to his gossamer light touch, wonderfully sensitive interpretations and a repertoire ranging from Piazzolla and Piaf to world premieres of new compositions. At the age of 20, Isang Enders was appointed Principal Cello of the Dresden Staatskapelle, making him the youngest section leader in Germany. Noted for his clear, penetrating tone and his big-hearted, dynamic performances, Enders has quickly established a name for himself working with many eminent conductors. Don Stiffe is one of the greatest singer/songwriters to have emerged on the Irish Folk Scene in recent years, receiving critical acclaim and awards both at home and abroad. A passionate and talented performer, his version of The Dimming of the Day won Vocal Cut of the Year at the Live Ireland 2010 Awards, a song that featured on his debut solo album Start of a Dream, released in 2006. In 2011 Don was a finalist in RTÉ’s All Ireland Talent Show, and was awarded Song of the Year at the Live Ireland 2011 Awards for his song Somebody Special, sung by Matt Keane. 2016 saw the release of Don’s new recording 1916 Classic Irish Ballads, and saw him touring America and Europe with Mary Black, Lúnasa, Maura O’Connell and Cherish The Ladies. It’s here again! The Linenhall’s ever-popular biennial celebration of the visual arts in Mayo makes a welcome return. And this year it’s in two venues, the Linenhall Arts Centre and Ballina Arts Centre. The show will be selected by Catherine Marshall. Catherine is a noted art historian and curator. Open to artists from or living in Mayo over the age of 18, the show presents a cornucopia of work in all manner of media and offers a fascinating snapshot of the breadth of arts practice in the county. My painting practice is informed by architectural space, with the former medical school of UCD at Earlsfort Terrace, Dublin providing the source material for my current body of work. In exploring this space, one phenomenon that caught my attention was how percussion instruments were littered about the former dissection room: What was previously a place of rigorous scientific enquiry on cadavers had become a space of musical experimentation for percussionists of the adjacent National Concert Hall. But a silence, a ghostliness and a sense of temporality pervades the space, which I reference by applying diaphanous layers of oil paint to the absorbent grounds of my paintings. An honours graduate in Fine Art from GMIT (2011), Noelle has exhibited in numerous shows in Ireland and the UK including Tulca, Éigse, and The Claremorris Open. She has received an Emerging Irish Artist Residency Award from the Burren College of Art and 126 Gallery, and Individual Artist Bursaries from Galway County Council. www.noellegallagher.com Adm. Patrick Corcoran is an artist based in Limerick City, working in mixed media. He explains: “Phobos and Deimos were figures in Greek mythology, twin brothers personifying fear and terror. This work deals with the themes of defence, self-defence and fear. Though several pieces are personal, coming directly from my own dreams and nightmares, other pieces stem from fear-related topics, such as the prevailing atmosphere of ‘climate of fear’ covered so frequently by the national and international media. This climate includes financial worries, civil strife/conflict, global environmental/weather concerns and even interstellar /cosmic earth-related disasters. The individual works in Phobos & Deimos, though varying in style and media, all relate to how governments, the media and individuals explore these concerns and issues.” Corcoran has exhibited in Ireland, UK, Switzerland, Brazil, Hungary and China. www.patrickcorcoran.net Adm. Erin Hagan’s practice aims to embody a sense of mystery, by connecting to spontaneities and chance in her process of making. Her curiosity in the possibilities with the materials that she works with often directs its outcome: encountering, manifesting, becoming, as a constant cyclical process in her art. Erin Hagan was born in Co.Tyrone and now lives and works as a visual artist in Belfast. She graduated with a Master of Fine Art in 2014 at Belfast School of Art. Since then she has exhibited in galleries such as Platform Arts, Catalyst Arts, Golden Thread, 126 Gallery and more. Katie Moore is a visual artist based in Co. Mayo. Her latest work is an installation, Memory. She says: “My work is very conceptually driven. Each process and action within the process is very considered. The materials I use are influenced by experiences in isolation and the theme I am working with. Human conditions such as empathy, isolation, trauma, loss, memorialisation are recurrent themes within my practice.” Katie graduated from GMIT Galway in 2015. She was Artist-in-Residence at the Jackie Clarke Collection, Ballina, creating the installation Paper Bloom and a limited edition publication. She created work for On Sight 2016 sculpture trail at National Museum of Ireland and for 186th Annual RHA Exhibition. Other residencies include A – Z West in California; 2×2 Part 2 at 126 in Galway; D.I.V.A at Electric Picnic; and A4 Sounds, Dublin. She received the Upstart Bursary from Mayo County Council Arts Office, with work at Mayo University Hospital, and had a solo show at the Custom House Studios in Westport in 2016. Adm. The Cabinet of Wonders The Cabinet of Wonders is an ongoing curated visual art project presented in the foyer of the Linenhall. The project takes its inspiration from the fashion for Cabinets of Curiosities, which found their beginnings in the Renaissance and were still popular until the late 19th century. Inspired by the eclectic approach of the original collector-curators, it presents a range of works “to engage, intrigue, surprise and delight” delight”. Cabinet of Wonders #5 features works by a selection of contemporary visual artists: Erin de Burca, Belinda Deutinger, David Flynn, Terri Mitchell, Mary Morris, Susie Quinn and Benita Stoney. “The Art Department in the school is a vibrant environment with on-going projects in a variety of crafts such as Printmaking. 3D work in clay modelling, wire construction and plaster of Paris are also explored. Linoprinting involves design skills with simplification of a drawing then transfer of design to lino and then carving and cutting the lino to achieve a variety of marks. The lino is then inked and printed to achieve a series of prints. The works on exhibition are evidence of the students design, cutting and planning skills combined with creative choices. Areas covered in the gallery visits and workshops will include: a) Light in space - explore creating the feeling of sunlight in the atmosphere of a painting, with a focus on winter light; b) Mixed media - how to incorporate printed or found images into a work on paper adding paint to create an entirely new composition & story; c) Colour - delve into the challenges and opportunities of working with a monochromatic palette and a saturated colour palette; d) Subject matter - explore the beauty of urban space. Facilitator Nuala Clarke was educated at the National College of Art and Design, Dublin, and is represented by Boltax Gallery, New York, where she lived and worked for two decades. DRAWING WORKSHOP SERIES FOR CHILDREN MID-TERM DRAWING MORNINGS for 8-12 year olds With artist Maeve Clancy Thursday 15th - Saturday 17th February 10.30am -11.30am A wonderful opportunity for children to develop key drawing skills through simple drawing exercises under the guidance of drawing expert Maeve Clancy. Participants will learn all about working from reference images and they’ll create a finished illustration of their own choice. Drawing is a wonderful means of visual expression and enables children to express emotions, experience autonomy, and build confidence. Join us for this fun, child-centred drawing experience. HERE’S YOUR CHANCE: VISUAL ART WORKSHOPS CUT PAPER PORTRAITS SHORT WORKSHOP SERIES FOR ADULTS With artist Maeve Clancy Thursday 15th and Friday 16th February 12.00noon-1.30pm Create a cut paper portrait - why not? In this short but intensive pair of workshops participants will draw, sketch and compose a portrait before using a very special cut-paper technique to create a two-tone print-style version of their drawing. While designing a theatre set for Branar Téatar in 2014, artist Maeve Clancy discovered that if she scored the front of a sheet of coloured mount-board she could cut out shapes and peel them off, revealing the cream surface underneath. In this way she used the properties of the board to create a lino-print effect with just a scalpel and mount board. She has gone on to create all sorts of visual art works using this technique, and in this workshop she will guide you through the basics of what is involved, from the first lines on paper to the finished piece. CYANOTYPE PRINT WORKSHOP FOR ADULTS AN INTRODUCTION TO THE CYANOTYPE PHOTOGRAPHIC PROCESS WORKSHOP FOR ADULTS With photographer Michael Gannon
Saturday 10th March 11.00am-4.30pm Cyanotype was the first non-silver photographic printing process, invented in 1842 by John Herschel. Making a cyanotype is an enjoyable process that involves contact printing using a photographic negative or making photograms on any suitable material such as paper, glass or wood and exposing them to sunlight or any UV light source. Materials are made light sensitive by brushing on a photosensitive emulsion which makes it a real hands-on process. This introductory workshop begins with a brief history of the cyanotype process. Participants will then learn to prepare their own photosensitive material; use photographic negatives to produce prints; and use plant and other materials to create contact prints (sun prints). At the end of the day you will have a number of finished cyanotype prints, and some photosensitive paper that you have prepared yourself to make some cyanotypes at home. Michael Gannon is an award-winning photographer and Fellow of the Irish Photographic Federation. A key member of the Mayo Photographic Club, his work has been exhibited in solo and group exhibitions nationally and internationally, and is held in collections including that of Mayo County Council. Tuesday 18th to Thursday 20th July (NB: 3-day workshop) OR Tuesday 25th to Thursday 27th July (NB: 3-day workshop) 10.30am - 2.00pm daily, including a 30 min break A three day workshop where you get a chance to explore visual art and drama. For the art there are three separate projects: you’ll create your own life-size portrait; you’ll create patterns and the impression of movement using stencils and professional markers; and, you’ll work on creating an abstract still-life. Then after each art session, you’ll go to our theatre space and take part in drama games, improvisations and character development using your imagination, voice and body. Prepare for lots of fun!

Is it an art work, is it a book? It’s both! Art books are a medium that many visual artists use to express their ideas. They don’t necessarily tell a story, but engage the viewer in a visual way. In this workshop you’ll brainstorm and plan an idea, construct a book (learning about binding and finishing), and then using drawing, collage, marbling, and all sorts of other techniques, you’ll transform your idea into an amazing art work. After each art session you’ll head to the theatre for improvisation games designed to hone and strengthen your ability to imagine, move and create, while generating your own characters, building stories and acting them out.
