Hello there, Can I begin by saying a huge THANKS to all who returned our Linenhall envelopes. We deeply appreciate your kindness and support, but we know you wouldn’t thank us for writing to thank you individually as that would kind of defeat the purpose of your donation. So now, please, consider yourself well and truly thanked. And if your envelope is still lying limply in some drawer then perhaps you might consider…. But, to business - another packed programme of treats in store this Autumn and treats they are. No matter what kind of music you enjoy we have the very finest musicians in that genre to entertain you. Ok, ok, so we don’t have any punk or heavy rock or rap, I take it all back. But we do have the sublime Eddi Reader, Martin Hayes, Duke Special, Chris Wood, Catherine Hunka, Finghin Collins, Anna & Elizabeth, so there. And that’s not even all of them. We also have a superb children’s programme put together by Orla Henihan, our Arts Access Officer. Orla has a rich understanding of meaningful engagement with the arts for children and a huge knowledge of the amazing work being produced by theatre makers, writers, musicians, visual artists and film makers for this very important audience. And, as you know, we take children very seriously here at the Linenhall, even if they do, very regularly, make us laugh out loud. Our Film Club has a lovely line up of international films and I confess it’s one of my favourite parts of our programme, probably because I never feel I’m working on Film Club night and I just get to watch the movie with everyone else. But now that I’ve said that I realise I actually enjoy almost all our events and I don’t want to be unfair to any of the amazing performances that go on here. So, in no particular order: we have brilliant stand-up comedy, theatre, literature, (several in association with Wild Atlantic Words Literary Festival), visual arts, including Mayo Artists Show (submission details on p27) and lots of workshops lined up for the coming months. And now, for my bit of personal news. I will be leaving the Linenhall this Autumn. It has been a privilege to work here and a great adventure watching the space develop and grow. I’ve met the most wonderful artists and performers, people who dedicate their lives to making art, often for scant reward. I’ve loved working with my tiny team of miracle workers who perform the equivalent loaves and fishes trick on a daily basis and always with a smile. And, of course, I’ve met you, you’re the reason the Linenhall exists and as long as you keep coming, and encouraging all you know to come, the Linenhall will continue to flourish. I want to thank you for your support over my many years here, and I look forward to meeting you soon in my new role as audience member! As always, Warmest regards

Karen Community Night – 10 Years in Mayo

Photo: Alison Laredo

An evening celebrating 10 years of Karen culture in Mayo. The Karen is one of the largest ethnic minority groups in Burma. The Karen in County Mayo came from one such camp (Ban Don Yang) to Ireland at the end of 2007. “During the evening we will launch our 10 year anniversary CD which will be songs in our native language. We will also display arts and crafts created by the Karen people. We will provide drinks such as Burmese teas and also have traditional songs and dance. Our traditional harp will also be played on the night.” Adm. FREE

Or would you rather be a fish? An evening with Geraldine Mitchell & Una Mannion

Under the gentle probing of Dr Siobhán Garrigan, come and hear writers Geraldine Mitchell and Una Mannion reveal why they enjoy working with words above all else and why, like the poet Paterson in Jarmusch’s eponymous film, they would definitely not rather join the aquatic species. Geraldine Mitchell is no stranger to Mayo readers. She has published fiction and biography in the past but it is for her poetry she is best known. Her third collection, Mountains for Breakfast, was launched by Michael Longley last March. This year alone, Sligo-based Una Mannion won the Hennessy Award for Poetry, the Cuirt fiction prize and the Doolin short story competition. Una is also working on a novel. She teaches at IT Sligo where she is also Programme Chair of the new BA in Writing & Literature. Siobhán Garrigan is the author of numerous books and papers and is currently Head of the School of Religions, Peace Studies and Theology at Trinity College Dublin, having previously taught at Yale and the University of Exeter. FILM SCREENING + Q&A Saturday 30th September @ 2.00pm Sanctuary

Ireland 2016 90mins English language Cert: 15A Larry and Sophie are in love. What could be more natural for them than to want to be alone, together? They bribe the feckless Tom to book them into a hotel for an afternoon’s tryst and look forward to getting to know each other, like countless couples before them. But Larry and Sophie aren’t any couple - they both have intellectual disabilities and Tom is their care worker. Both hilarious and heartbreaking, Sanctuary is a truly subversive piece of cinema about two young people trying to be together, in a world doing everything to keep them apart. This screening will be followed by a Q&A with some of those involved in making the film. “...one of the most ambitious, innovative and deeply moving Irish films of recent times.” - Seán Crosson, Film Ireland “an utter joy of a movie.” - Charlie McBride, Galway Advertiser “Hilarious, touching and important.”- Luke Maxwell, Dublin Inquirer Adm. €5 Sanctuary is screened as part of a drama engagement programme involving Blue Teapot Theatre Company, Mayo Down Syndrome and the Linenhall. AMERICAN FOLK Wednesday 8th November @ 8.00pm Anna & Elizabeth

Creating a huge buzz of excitement on their UK & Ireland tour last year, we are delighted to welcome back Anna & Elizabeth with their captivating mix of ballads, foot-stomping dance tunes, stories and visual art. An evening of pure, simple and true music. “There’s something truly inspiring about this collaboration between 25 year olds from southwest Virginia... and a very special treat for lovers of pure traditional singing and playing, afficionados of the great ballad, and anyone that gets excited witnessing culture carried forward with mastery, love and a profound and real understanding of what makes old material great.” - Sing Out Magazine “[They] follow in the footsteps of many of our idols and mentors who’ve gone before, and they do them proud.” - Alice Gerrard “They brought many of us to tears with some of the most yearning harmonies I’ve heard. These songs are given few embellishments sometimes a fiddle is added to a single voice, sometimes a banjo or guitar chimes in - but always the power is in the sparseness. If you’ve never thought your tastes would lean to mountain music, take a deep breath and soak it all in.” - Bob Boilen, NPR Music Adm. €16 / €14 (concessions)

TRADITIONAL MUSIC Monday 13th November @ 8.00pm Martin Hayes & Dennis Cahill

Martin Hayes is regarded as one of the most extraordinary talents to emerge in the world of Irish traditional music. His unique sound, his mastery of the fiddle and his acknowledgement of music past and present combine to create an astonishing and formidable artistic intelligence. He has drawn inspiration from sources as diverse as composer Arvo Pärt, viola da gamba master Jordi Savall, and John Coltrane, but remains grounded in the music he grew up with in Co. Clare. Dennis Cahill is a master guitarist, a native of Chicago born to parents from the Dingle Peninsula. He studied at the city’s prestigious Music College before becoming an active member of the local music scene. His spare, essential accompaniment to Hayes’ fiddle is acknowledged as a major breakthrough for guitar in the Irish tradition. The two met in Chicago in the 1980s, and formed the jazz/rock/fusion band, Midnight Court. When Martin reclaimed his traditional roots, he began a new musical relationship with Cahill, beginning with the lyrical music of East Clare. And the rest, as they say, is musical history. “Sparsely accompanied fiddle music has rarely sounded so complete and so essential.” - Q Magazine Adm. €20

CLASSICAL MUSIC Thursday 23rd November @ 8.00pm

Katherine Hunka (violin) & Finghin Collins (piano) In a new exciting collaboration, violinist Katherine Hunka and pianist Finghin Collins will tour to nine venues in their Arts Council funded nationwide tour. As well as being among the top soloists in the country, they are probably also the best communicators, so entertaining and informative introductions to the music can be expected. Their programme of duos for violin and piano will feature well-known classics by Beethoven and Brahms and lesser-known works by the Czech composer Leos Janáĉek and the contemporary Irish composer Ian Wilson. Programme: Beethoven: Sonata in A minor; Wilson: ‘from the book of longing’; Janáĉek: Sonata for violin and piano; Brahms: Sonata in G major www.classicallinks.ie “Hunka...a sensitive and assured musician.” - Simon Hewitt Jones, Classical Music Web “Collins... exceptionally fluent, exceptionally intelligent, exceptionally sensitive.” - Piers Burton-Page, International Record Review Adm: €16 / €14 (concessions)

THEATRE Monday 27th November @ 8.00pm

Lyceum C&T - The First Protestant: A Play for our Time A gripping psychological drama with moments of intensity and also unexpected comedy, The First Protestant presents a tense dual between Martin Luther and the shadowy figure of The Analyst, and through it the life and struggles of Luther, the monk who defied the Catholic Church with such profound repercussions for Christendom. Finding echoes in current events, Luther’s Europe is one where there is peasant revolt caused by oppressive economic austerity, a possible banking collapse in Germany, the Europe-wide Union of the Holy Roman Empire in danger of fragmentation, the Ottoman Empire threatening the peace of Europe, and the invention of the printing press offering the possibility of free dissemination of information. No strangers to Linenhall audiences, actors Michael Roper and Gerry Farrell (who have featured in many Beezneez productions) give outstanding performances as Luther and the Analyst. The result is ‘an enlightening, thought-provoking and enjoyable theatrical experience’. Adm: €15 / €12 (concessions)

SONG, SATIRE & HISTORY Thursday 30th November @ 8.00pm The Ten Dark Secrets of the Irish Revolution

How did the lawyer who prosecuted the 1916 leaders end up in one of the highest positions in the Free State? Why were 280,000 women denied the vital Treaty Election Vote of 1922? What made 2 million Irish People turn from hating 1916 to supporting the War of Independence? What dark secret made Michael Collins sign the Treaty, and why is his assassination even stranger and more covered-up than JFK’s? All these questions and more will be answered in The Ten Dark Secrets of the Irish Revolution, an engrossing show combining song, satire, hundreds of striking images and stark historical insight, presented by Paddy Cullivan (of Callan’s Kicks, The Late Late Show, Leviathan and Kilkenomics) in an audiovisual spectacular that speaks to ‘all who aspire towards freedom, justice and a great (hi)story’ that unfolds ‘like an addictive whodunnit’... “Romanticism makes way for careful analysis with Paddy’s unique brand of humour and story-telling genius.” - Irish Independent “Freewheeling political polemic that makes you laugh while making you think.” - The Irish Times “Cullivan is a national treasure.” - David McWilliams, economist Adm. €16/14 (concessions)

VISUAL ART: GALLERY Friday 18th August - Saturday 16th September Bryan Gerard Duffy - The Fool by the Roadside

“I will build a great wall - and nobody builds walls better than me, believe me - and I’ll build them very inexpensively.” - American President Donald Trump The exhibition title was based on Duffy’s naïve intervention, the act of surveying the innards of a decrepit Israeli army tank left isolated on the roadside in the Golan Heights region prior to the 2014 bombings on Gaza. He scaled a wall to invade the tank; he later crossed “the wall” to Bethlehem. The show explores the social consequences of these wall structures and the process of navigating them through the everyday. It presents a volatile playground composed of hideaways, shelters, and interactive materials tempting the viewer to touch. Bryan Gerard Duffy’s work investigates notions of psychological and physical displacement. The Castlebar native is a multi-disciplinary artist having graduated from NCAD, Dublin in 2009. He has exhibited work in the US, throughout Europe, Africa and The Middle East. www.bryangerardduffy.com Adm. Free

Both works center on themes of repetition and stagnation: The Perpetual Present reflects on the negative aspects of stillness, while The Long Still 2014 considers the potential in learning to accept and embrace stagnation. VISUAL ART: FOYER Tuesday 10th - Monday 23rd October Paper, Light & Shadow

Throughout late July and August a group of teenage refugees recently resettled in Mayo participated in a visual art and animation project at the Linenhall Arts Centre. The group came up with a story and told it using visual imagery in the form of animated paper cut-outs. Under the expert guidance of artist Maeve Clancy, assisted by designer Jeni Roddy, they imagined, conceived, wrote and conveyed the story using artwork they created during the project. Working in the Linenhall, they had the chance to meet, collaborate, speak English, learn visual art and animations skills and produce their own short animated film. This exhibition is the culmination of their creative endeavours. The project was initiated and funded by Mayo County Council Arts Office through a Cultural Diversity Partnership initiative, supported by the Arts Council under the Invitation to Collaborate Scheme. Mayo Social Inclusion Awareness Week takes place from 16th to 22nd October 2017. For further information contact community@mayococo.ie

DESIGN WORKSHOP ELEMENTS OF SURFACE DESIGN

Workshop for adults with Elsa O’Reilly Saturday 23rd September, 11.00am-4.30pm Explore creating a design for a 2D paper surface from start to finish based on techniques used in textile design. Participants will learn about creating and using mood boards - types of collages consisting of images, colours and other visual elements - as a way of coming up with, and visually illustrating, the style of the design being created. The boards will help in picking out motifs and structures which will then be used to sketch ideas. These sketches along with consideration of placement, repeats and borders will form the basis for each design. Then in the afternoon participants will learn about transferring a simple design to a paper surface using wood block / lino printing techniques, and will create their own prints on paper. Elsa O’Reilly is a Mayo based textile designer with a great enthusiasm for all things print, pattern, colour and design. She has many years experience working in fashion and interiors. Elements of Surface Design takes place on Saturday September 23rd from 11.00am to 4.30pm. There will be a break for lunch (not provided) from 1.00pm-2.00pm. Cost per head for the workshop is €25. After each art session you’ll head to the theatre for improvisation games designed to hone and strengthen your ability to imagine, move and create, while generating your own characters, building stories and acting them out. Adm. €30 per participant (for the full 3 days)
